Born in New York, some of his earliest musical influences included his mother's love for soca music and the distinct Caribbean rhythms of his culture. An appreciation of Jazz would be further guided by his father's expanding audiophile home system. Moving to Detroit in 1980, the start of the decade where Techno would take formation, put him at the center of music history while simultaneously working at the now famed nightclub “The Music Institute”Relocating to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College, he took it upon himself to bring more of the authentic House and Techno flavor to his new home, playing at numerous clubs and bars in the metro area. Eventually this led to DEEP, his aptly-named, game changing decade long Saturday night residency at local club MJQ, where he would bring guests such as King Britt, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Peven Everett, Kerri Chandler, Phil Asher and Joe Claussell. It is during the 2000s that Kai really sets his stride. 2002 saw the release of his first production, ‘The Kaizer EP', on Brett Dancer's seminal deep house label Track Mode. After a few releases on other labels such as Moodymann's Mahogani Music, Deep Explorer & Real Soon. A few years later he would co-found the Labor Day weekend outdoor event House In The Park with DJ Ramon Rawsoul which now has over 15,000 attendees.2008 saw the creation of his label NDATL and the first edition of his annual Deep Detroit. NDATL stands for the cities that have played a role in his musical development: New York, Detroit, ATLanta. Which is home to many of his own productions and A List producers such as Larry Heard, Mr. G, Theo Parrish & Mike Huckaby to name a few.e has recently curated the boutique Kai Alcé Eyewear line. “The Kaizer” never stops moving. A love of life, mixed with his flair for originality, willingness to experiment and devotion to the dancefloor has cemented his place as a pillar in American dance music history. Whatever comes next from Mr. Alcé, you can be assured that it will be classy, soulful, fulfilling and funky. www.ndatl.comRecorded on April 7, 2025 in Brooklyn, NY.

Synopsis On today's date in 1961, the New York City Ballet presented a new work scored by a 35-year old composer named Gunther Schuller, who was conducting the pit orchestra. On stage, in the middle of the green- and purple-garbed dancers, were four additional musicians: namely, the Modern Jazz Quartet, decked out in their usual white ties and tails. Schuller's score, entitled Variants, was an attempt to fuse modern music and jazz into a style he labeled Third Stream. ”I had this idea of the First and Second streams [classical and jazz] getting married and giving birth to a child, which is the Third stream," recalled Schuller years later, ruefully noting that today one would have to call it the 10,000th stream as composers have since introduced a multitude of ethnic, folk and vernacular music into the mix as well. But back in 1961, the idea attracted a lot of press – not all favorable. The New Yorker, for example, thought it odd that the MJQ “sat like a quartet of hunters in a duck blind, anxiously shooting out carefully calculated notes.” Time magazine wrote: “Schuller's score was the essence of the cool – spare, fragmentary, but resembling jazz only in its rhythmic drive.” If this was the Third Stream, the reviewer concluded, “it never seemed to be flowing anywhere.” Music Played in Today's Program Gunther Schuller (b. 1925) Conversation Modern Jazz Quartet and ensemble; Gunther Schuller, conductor. Synopsis On today's date in 1907, the "Pomp and Circumstance" March No. 4 by Sir Edward Elgar had its premiere performance in London. Say "Pomp and Circumstance" to most people and they will start humming the tune of Number One, later set to words as "Land of Hope and Glory." That march accompanied many of us down the aisle at our high school or college graduations. In all, Elgar composed five "Pomp and Circumstance" marches, and meant to write a sixth, but just never got around to it. No. 1 is the most familiar, but No. 4 runs a close second, with another very noble, very British main tune. During World War II, Sir Alan Herbert fitted his "Song of Freedom" to this music and with its opening line of "All men must be free," it became an unofficial alternate British national anthem. Meanwhile on these shores, we note that one of America's classic chamber jazz ensembles was founded on today's date in 1951 in New York City , when the Modern Jazz Quartet was formed by pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Kenny Clarke. Under the direction of Lewis, the Quartet fused jazz improvisation with classical forms and Baroque counterpoint. Instead of playing in smoky bars, MJQ made a point of playing in concert halls and even wore tuxes, asking audiences to afford their chamber jazz the same attention and respect usually reserved for classical music. Science and the Sea podcast

When the clouds begin to thicken up, many of us head for cover. And small marine organisms may do the same thing. Some recent research found that they move up or down as cloud cover changes -- a way to keep safe as the amount of light changes. Many fish and other organisms move up and down in the water as light levels vary. When it gets dark, they move up to feed. And as day begins to break, they move down to avoid being eaten themselves. They also change their depth in response to moonlight -- trying to find just the right amount of light to survive another day. That process is called “vertical migration.”In 2018, researchers studied this up-and-down cycle in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. They watched the light levels, and compared them to the migrations of groups of tiny fish and other organisms. In particular, they used sonar to look at a layer of organisms that stayed about a thousand feet deep during the day.It was cloudy during the entire research cruise. But the thickness of the clouds varied, so the amount of sunlight varied as well. Scientists found that when the clouds got thicker, the tiny organisms moved up. And when the clouds thinned out, they moved down. It took a few minutes for the critters to respond to the change. And there had to be a pretty good shift in the light level to trigger a move. But the organisms often moved up and down many times during the day, and by a good distance each time -- keeping the light just right below the ocean surface.

This famous Christmas Eve session has for years been our Christmas Jazz feature and 2015 is no different. This all-star record date by a band nominally led by trumpeter and Jazz icon Miles Davis contains Jazz that will live forever and has influenced countless players over the years. A true musical landmark. Mr. Davis is paired with three members of the Modern Jazz Quartet which included Milt Jackson on vibes, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums, who was the MJQ's first drummer. Davis was pleased with the lineup but Prestige Record's head honcho, Bob Weinstock insisted that Thelonious Monk be on piano. Miles at first objected but finally agreed and the addition of Monk to this mix was a touch of magic. Monk was the spice on this musical concoction. The musical chemistry was wonderful here and tonight we hear the four master takes from this session beginning with Milt Jackson's blues, "Bags' Groove" which contains one of Monk's most fascinating solos. Next is a Monk tune called "Bemsha Swing". Following that is the brightest tune of the set in Miles Davis' tune "Swing Spring" and the set ends with the band's interpretation of the George and Ira Gershwin standard "The Man I Love". Great Jazz for the ages and the spirit of Christmas is heard throughout the set. Merry Christmas to all!

It is evident when he steps behind the turntables or CDJs, where he is at once clearly comfortable and believe it or not, just a tad bit nervous. After more than 20 years in the business, yes, “The Kaizer” still gets butterflies. That’s probably what makes Kai Alcé such a force: He doesn’t settle down, blend in or go along. That integrity comes through in every gig he’s worked – from his early days at Detroit’s Music Institute when he was just teenager, to the 10-year-long DEEP legacy at MJQ that he co-founded, to the production company, NDATL, that he created in 2008.

On November 29, 1957, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holliday, Zoot Sims, Chet Baker, Sonny Rollins, and a multi-talented young R&B player who played jazz that night, Ray Charles, and others played a benefit concert for the Morningside Recreation Center at Carnegie Hall. Almost a half a century later, these recordings, intended to be played on radio Voice of America, were found in the Library of Congress. The aforementioned artists’ performances were never made available and yet, one set from that night was released, featuring a quartet with pianist Thelonious Monk, saxophonist John Coltrane with Shadow Wilson on drums and Abdul-Ahmed Malik on bass. That recording, on Blue Note records, released in 2005, was a critical and commercial sensation. Monk and Coltrane had played more than 100 shows together the previous five months at the Five Spot Club in New York City and, as Gabriel Solis writes in his thought-provoking multi-disciplinary analysis of their program, that Carnegie Hall concert was “a compendium of what was possible in the jazz conventions of the day and a glimpse of how these jazz conventions could be pushed forward.” The Monk/Coltrane concert set featured two great icons in the history of jazz at different points in their career. Monk had already established himself as a unique, eccentric and groundbreaking composer and performer and bandleader, too (as Solis points out in our interview). John Coltrane was still evolving into one of the most multi-perspectived yet focused and revered players in American jazz. It was, as Solis documents, in many ways a golden age of jazz: besides new recording technologies that afforded the possibility of longer recordings with greater listening fidelity, it was an age of “legendary intensity” when players such as Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Max Roach, Benny Golson, Dizzy Gillispie, MJQ, Hank Mobly, Hank Jones, Milt Jackson, Lennie Tristano, and Gerry Mulligan “wrote and played and recorded songs and albums that would challenge their contemporaries and become standards in time.” And, jazz had not “separated” from pop music. People went to clubs to hear live jazz; they went in great numbers to jazz concerts/benefits – and, at the same jazz recordings were being brought into the country’s living rooms to larger and larger audiences. Gabriel Solis, an Associate Professor in Music, African-American studies and Anthropology at the University of Illinois, has written a fascinating volume about the cultural significance of the concert, contextual insights about the serendipitous yet important collaborative bond between Monk and Coltrane, “close reading” musical analyses as to how each piece on their set “played out” with respect to the members of the quartet, and a retrospective look at the significance of the public’s and critical responses to the CD’s release by Blue Note Records in 2005. In Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall (Oxford UP, 2013) Solis discusses whether the popularity of the CD after its release in 2005 is evidence of nostalgic reverence for an era gone by, or a validation that jazz is alive-and-well and more appreciated than ever. Of course, Solis knows it’s far more complicated than that, but he improvises riffs and ruminations that stimulate the reader into pleasing new ponderings about the meaning of “nostalgia,” the “is jazz dead?” question (which Solis notes going back as least as far as 1964), the decline of the jazz clubs, the ascendency of jazz studies in the Academy, and interesting perspectives on Monk’s and Coltrane’s musical development ... Billed at "The Last Concert" and performed by the longest permanent group in Jazz music the Modern Jazz Quartet was going to disband. John Lewis, piano and musical director, vibist Milt Jackson, the group's major solo voice, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Connie Kay were going to go their separate ways. This great "last concert" took place at Avery Fisher Hall in New York on November 25,1974 and even the MJQ did some very special things with their music that night. It was recorded and occupies a special place in the MJQ's vast legacy of recordings. There is a special feel to this concert as on can imagine. As a postscript the MJQ reformed in 1981 and they continued to record and play engagements until the death in 1999 of vibist Milt Jackson. Jackson could never be replaced and that was the true end of the Quartet. Listen to these recordings to hear the MJQ at their best.

This truly classic date was recorded on Christmas Eve 1954 and somehow, although not intended has a distinctive "Christmasy" feel to it. The date was really put together by the owner of Prestige Records, Robert (Bob) Weinstock. He had two best sellers under contract, Miles Davis and The Modern Jazz Quartet. He approached Miles Davis about the date and Miles was excited and pleased and expected to record with Milt Jackson, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke and perhaps his close friend, John Lewis on piano, all members of the MJQ. If not Lewis, perhaps Horace Silver, another favorite of Miles. Weinstock threw a curve at Miles and said, Jackson, Heath and Clarke are on but the pianist will be Thelonious Monk. Weinstock asserted that he needed Monk to perform and record with some of the "best sellers". Miles was not pleased but Weinstock said either Monk or no date. After a long uncomfortable silence between Weinstock and Davis....Miles agreed to the date, He needed the money and liked all the other players. He liked and respected Monk as well but didn't enjoy playing with him but figured he could get around this in a musical way. The date came off beautifully despite the tension between the two men and Monk compromised by not accompanying Davis during his solos except for one tune which was Monk's. The tunes are "Bags' Groove", a blues by Jackson, "Bemsha Swing" by Monk,"Swing Spring" by Davis and the Gershwin's "The Man I Love". plus two alternates of Bags' Groove and The Man I Love. This session was how these gentlemen felt at the time and they had no idea that this date would become one of the bellwethers of Modern Jazz but it has and will remain a classic forever.
