Wayfair uses AI and machine learning (ML) technology to interpret what its customers want, connect them with products nearby, and ensure that the products they see online look and feel the same as the ones that ultimately arrive in their homes. With a background in engineering and a passion for all things STEM, Wayfair's Director of Machine Learning, Tulia Plumettaz, is an innate problem-solver. In this episode, she offers some insight into Wayfair's ML-driven decision-making processes, how they implement AI and ML for preventative problem-solving and predictive maintenance, and how they use data enrichment and customization to help customers navigate the inspirational (and sometimes overwhelming) world of home decor. We also discuss the culture of experimentation at Wayfair and Tulia's advice for those looking to build a career in machine learning.Key Points From This Episode:A look at Tulia's engineering background and how she ended up in this role at Wayfair.Defining operations research and examples of its real-life applications. What it means for something to be strategy-proof.Different ways that AI and ML are being integrated at Wayfair. The challenge of unstructured data and how Wayfair takes the onus off suppliers.Wayfair's North Star: detecting anomalies before they're exposed to customers.Preventative problem-solving and how Wayfair trains ML models to “see around corners.”Examples of nuanced outlier detection and whether or not ML applications would be suitable.Insight into Wayfair's bespoke search tool and how it interprets customers' needs. The exploit-and-explore model Wayfair uses to measure success and improve accordingly.Tulia's advice for those forging a career in machine learning: go back to first principles!Tweetables:“[Operations research is] a very broad field at the intersection between mathematics, computer science, and economics that [applies these toolkits] to solve real-life applications.” — Tulia Plumettaz [0:03:42]“All the decision making, from which channel should I bring you in [with] to how do I bring you back if you're taking your sweet time to make a decision to what we show you when you [visit our site], it's all [machine learning]-driven.” — Tulia Plumettaz [0:09:58]“We want to be in a place [where], as early as possible, before problems are even exposed to our customers, we're able to detect them.” — Tulia Plumettaz [0:18:26]“We have the challenge of making you buy something that you would traditionally feel, sit [on], and touch virtually, from the comfort of your sofa. How do we do that? [Through the] enrichment of information.” — Tulia Plumettaz [0:29:05]“We knew that making it easier to navigate this very inspirational space was going to require customization.” — Tulia Plumettaz [0:29:39]“At its core, it's an exploit-and-explore process with a lot of hypothesis testing. Testing is at the core of [Wayfair] being able to say: this new version is better than [the previous] version.” — Tulia Plumettaz [0:31:53]Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Tulia Plumettaz on LinkedInWayfairHow AI HappensSama

This weeks episode kicks off the "Architecture and The Community" theme. The whole idea of this theme is to really explore how architecture and the community are so intertwined and how architects can be more present in communities. So my guest today is Tulia Scott, a Trinidadian born architect who studied and worked in both the US and the Caribbean is an Associate, Project Manager with Moody Nolan. She is a FAMU alumni who graduated with an M.Arch. and has 20 years combined experience in Architecture and Interior Design with a broad range of experience in Award winning Libraries, Mixed Use Development, Religious, and Academic Buildings as well as in Feasibility Studies and Concept Design Projects. After more than a decade in the field she became an Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellow, working with a non-profit housing developer and operator of senior housing, Presbyterian Senior Living (PSL) in the North Eastern market. Tulia worked helping build their in-house design capacity and her own knowledge of housing using the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) process and Continuing Care Retirement Communities. Tulia is a pragmatic thinker and a problem solver and focuses on equitable community development encompassing the design of both civic and educational buildings, housing and other support buildings which provide the vessels for our human experience. Her main goal is to help bring the benefits of architecture and design to the people and communities who need it most and help foster strategic partnerships with other entities and providers of services, which help sustain and enhance community life. Tulia is also active with community and professional groups like NOMA Atlanta currently serving as the Vice President of NOMA Atlanta. She is a graduate of the Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program, Leadership Greenville Class 42 and 2017 Greenville Dreams Grassroots Development Program with training in community leadership and leveraging community assets. In her spare time, she enjoys participating in community events, photography, hiking and travelling. Of course Tulia makes the perfect guest to kick off such an important theme, I feel, which is architect and the community. As you go along and we uncover bits and pieces of Tulia's experience, you'll all come to find out that Tulia truly is a community oriented designer. I really admire her work and the way she carries herself in her leadership role at NOMA Atlanta. Without further ado, keep listening and get to know Tulia! Enjoy!! In January and February of 2022, Kim Kilpatrick was in Ottawa, the place she'd lived most of her life, when the trucks rolled into town. Canada's capitol city and the “Freedom Convoy” were all over the news, but what was it like to be there during those tense weeks, to be right in the thick of it? This week on Outlook we speak with Kim about what the impacts were on her, being a person with a disability, just trying to go about her life and the specific impediments to simply getting around in her own hometown. We also hear about Kilpatrick's lifelong love of a good story well told and how she became a traveling storyteller herself, currently in Alberta performing “Raising Stanley/Life with Tulia”, a show about guide dog/human handler stories so people can understand the role of the dog and the role of its human better. So not actually in Ottawa when we speak with her. Check out Kim Kilpatrick, her polished storytelling talents, and even go see her if you're in Calgary, Alberta, one year after the events in the capitol and there in Alberta too, as she is telling stories at The Lunchbox Theatre from February 1 to the 19th. In the late 90s, the little town of Tulia, Texas, was up to its ass in drugs. At least, that's what the local sheriff thought. So he hired a guy named Tom Coleman to work as an undercover narcotics agent. What Tom discovered was truly unbelievable. As it turned out, the little town of approximately 5,000 people was home to *at least* 46 drug dealers. On top of that, the drug dealers in this economically depressed community dealt oodles of powder cocaine! Oh, and guess what?? Even though Tulia had a pretty small Black community, almost every single drug dealer that Tom encountered was Black! What are the odds??? Thanks to Tom's undercover work, authorities arrested 46 people on drug charges. But Tom hadn't worn a wire during these drug buys. Nothing was videoed or photographed. He hadn't even worked alongside another undercover agent. Hell, he hadn't even written his notes on a notepad. He'd written every pertinent detail about those drug deals on his leg. Then Brandi tells us about the murder of Ingrid Lyne. Indrid was a newly divorced, busy mom. She shared three daughters with her ex-husband, Phillip, and she worked as a nurse at Seattle's Swedish Medical Center. She'd just recently begun online dating. Through an app, she met John Charlton. John seemed like a nice enough guy, so Ingrid went out with him a few times. But on the morning after Ingrid went to a Seattle Mariners game with John, her friends and family couldn't get a hold of her. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. Can people incarcerated afford to wait for small, gradual change? What happens to the people incarcerated if the system breaks? What is the right balance between the needs of the current case vs the needs of the future case? How do Public Defenders counter the decades long strategy of the Conservative legal movement with their own strategy? All these questions, and more, are pondered by Hunter and his guest today, Jeff Blackburn. During his career, Jeff worked as a criminal defense attorney, impact litigation lawyer and helped to found and operate the Texas Innocence Project. Through it all, Jeff's aimed to foster and execute a strategic vision for indigent defense and civil liberties that counter's the work of prosecutors and police. In his eyes, public defenders and other justice minded individuals are in the conflict business and the must learn to value the future battles as much as the current ones. To fail to do so will leave them fighting a battle against an enemy that already made the fight unwinnable, but what is the right balance? Hopefully, this discussion and the myriad of questions that arise from it will spark your own thinking about how to move towards more strategic levels of thinking. So kwake yeye nini hasa kimebadilika? Love, Salama. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/yahstonetown/support
A conversation with Rickie Johnson, a motivational speaker in Amarillo who specializes in financial literacy seminars. His family moved frequently when Johnson was a kid—he grew up in Pampa, Tulia, and various stints in Amarillo. He tells host Jason Boyett how his upbringing in a low-income household convinced him most families didn't struggle with a lack of income, but a lack of knowledge about how to handle money when it was available. Johnson's work in sales and exposure to colleagues making better financial decisions inspired him to help others learn good money habits. This episode is sponsored by Wieck Realty and US Cleaners.
How can women achieve more? What is the most crucial weapon in bringing diversity into the professional arena? Join your host Elizabeth Bachman as she talks with Tulia Lopes about breaking the bias barrier between men and women. Tulia's goal is to support women, eradicate the gender gap in leading positions, and bring women's voices to global stages. In this episode, she shares valuable insights on women's communication skills and boosting their confidence. She discusses the importance of being aware, so we can express ourselves with more clarity so we can advance in our careers and business.

February 1899 marked the arrival of perhaps the coldest airmass in move into the United States in recorded history. For more than a week the bitter arctic cold ravaged North America with Blizzards and ice. Records were established that hold even today more than century later. By February 12, 1899 the cold was already firmly established. In previous days the mercury had already dipped to minus 20 in Columbus and Pittsburgh. The day before on the 11th parts of Montana had seen temperatures below minus 60. In Tallahassee 2 below was recorded, a state of Florida record that still stands today. A foot and a half of snow had not only fallen in Philadelphia and Baltimore, but Richmond and Raleigh. By February 12 the storm was in full swing, in Boston winds gusted to 65 mph and maintained an average of 50 mph throughout the entire day. 24-36" of snow just north of Boston in Beverly. The Boston Herald declared: "Rarely, if ever, has Boston been so completely snowbound as it has been by this blizzard." At the end of the storm, the snow depth measured 23" in Boston. But the snow extended far southward bringing unheard of snow totals including 4 in Charleston SC and 2.8” in Tallahassee. The cold persisted well behind the storm, Tulia, Texas recorded a morning temperature of minus 23, a state record. The arctic grip was not lessening, far from it, some places would suffer even more from the cold in coming days. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Gatekeeper, a person who works to allow, refuse, limit, redirect, support, or hinder initiatives in a community. Tulia and I discuss how harmful gatekeeping is to both the victim and perpetrator. We talk about what role it's played in both our personal and professional lives. We hope this conversation will encourage people to have these discussions openly and more often. We also hope it'll bridge gaps, and allow us to give more opportunities to others and to further the growth of our community. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/spitwisdomtv/support
