Social Justice, catholic school uniforms, horror films, and a scrappy midwestern je ne sais quoi all inform the style and approach of Elijah Justice. He's a rhythm skater and designer residing in Brooklyn, but his home state of Ohio has his heart. His foray into skating like many of us began in family-fun style rinks, but when he found himself at United Skates in Wyckliffe, Ohio he caught sight of the real deal and there was no turning back, he was hooked. In this conversation he opens up about what drives him as a skater, creator, and most importantly a member of the wider rink skating community. Elijah's skating is without a doubt a love letter to the swagger-fueled Cleveland style, and in gratitude for all that the OGs and new school skaters of the region have given him, he finds himself driven to give back especially to the youth. He's also found his place in the NYC/NJ skate scene, making friends galore all while unapologetically challenging the status quo with his emphatic skate style. In this conversation he reveals himself as someone who makes moves of purpose, and while he may be known for shaking things up, he doesn't shy away from having difficult conversations that are led by love and commonality. In our exchange he brings into focus how his design work and skate life intersect. A unifying theme is his punk sensibility, which shows up in the messaging of his eponymous apparel line, and similarly  in the way he challenges inequity and discrimination in community. Whether signifying through clothing and graphics or his words he gets the message across! We also get into all the fun opportunities roller skating has brought into his life,  the importance of keeping ALL regional skate styles alive, and the specific ways he's giving back to young people in the realms of design and skating. This conversation is equal parts vulnerability and unwavering confidence, and you really shouldn't miss it!Check out Elijah's apparel line : https://www.elijahjustice.com/Follow Elijah on IG: https://www.instagram.com/elijahjusticeDive deep with Elijah's playlist featuring Cleveland rink essentials: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2xlJMpSd0t6G49sVpdfJgRKeep up with the Cleveland skate crews Elijah shouts out in the interview: @sk8life_crew@topflightclass@elitesquad09@team.homicide_ @dipgirlzcrew@stormch8sers@freaksquadcrew@f5skatecrew@style.bendersSupport Skaterade! Just like a timeless melody, our conversation with composer Jongnic Bontemps, whose latest project is Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, was an unforgettable one. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Jongnic's musical journey began at an early age with a simple request. His mother really wanted to hear an organ in the house. The piano soon became Jongnic's best friend while his exploration grew to include performing in bands. Because the journey of a creative is often sinuous, we talk about how he ended up heading to Yale University to become a lawyer and after another pivot, landed what ended up to be a 15 year career in tech. He became one of a few Black chief technology officers in Silicon Valley until he heard a calling from a much higher source. We talk in-depth about the journey from law to music to software development and ultimately the world of post-production as he's composed for over 50 projects. We discuss the beauty of making and maintaining connections with other creators and the purposeful sustainability it can bring, which led Jongnic to composing for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. His impressive credentials include projects like, The Land, United Skates, Boomerang (TV series), The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel, Sharia, My Name Is Pauli Murray, Godfather of Harlem, Creed II, The Secret Life of Pets, Unbroken, The Imitation Game, Godzilla, Carrie and the video games, Call of Duty: WWII and Redfall. We're picking up right where we left off from the last episode, talking about AI and how it relates to sound design with Nathan Ruyle. Nathan Ruyle - IMDb Nathans Company “This Is Sound Design” website: This is Sound Design 00:12 - Right out the gate Christian, Jason and Nathan discuss AI vs. good live sound recordings. We discuss that “the tools are only as good as the material you're feeding it.” There is no way around in achieving greatness unless you are investing in quality material. 03:30 - The AI discussion leads to asking about location sound and its challenges. Location sound is very different from sound design and final mix. Hear how Nathan unpacks these differences in reference to his movie “Citizen Sleuth”. 04:29 - Nathan shares how he used spectral tools to identify sounds in his documentary; yet due to use of camera audio and limited crew, there were still challenges in parsing them out. Even big budget films face audio challenges, which further highlights the nature of the industry. 07:42 - Nathan discusses how narrative and documentary filmmaking informs each other. In both narrative and documentary films, the use of Foley is essential to capturing the complete soundscape. Even with high-quality sound recording, certain details like footsteps or subtle moments may be missed. Therefore, techniques like Foley are crucial in both types of films to enhance the overall experience. 09:36 - Christian points out there is a difference between Foley and sound effects. 12:28 - History of Jack Foley & Foley experiences 16:32 - The legalities and clearance for the music 18:16 - Foley and music for the HBO Documentary called “United Skates”. 22:52 - Christian explains some terms, such as what are “stems”? 24:07 - Christian asks on behalf of new filmmakers who are still working in lower budget independent films. Do they have any ability to hire Nathan and his team at all? She asks him to give some sort of budget spectrum that they work on for all kinds of different films? And what does the look like in terms of rates. Nathan gives an overview of what his team can provide. They have an ultra low budget rate sheet, where it kind of breaks down three budget options in great detail where you can see all the different parts of the process. 27:08 - Nathan's company “This Is Sound Design” recently released “Joyland”. IMDB: Joyland (2022) - IMDb If you're in LA or want to come to LA and need help for a movie, they would be more than happy to have you visit for a tour. 31:04 - DocuView Déjà Vu Jason: “Citizen Sleuth” (2023), 23 mins, IMDB: Citizen Sleuth (2023) - IMDb Currently in the film festival run, check out the Instagram for film festival details. Ep159: Overcoming Limiting Beliefs (and Lack of Experience) to Break Into Scripted Television | with Marcella Garcia

Optimize Yourself

When editor Marcella Garcia originally reached out to me in January because she was stuck in the wrong place in her career and wanted to make a seemingly impossible transition into scripted entertainment, she did not expect to be sending me this message just six months later (in the Optimizer Slack community): Like Marcella, when people come to me for help, they commonly describe themselves as feeling stuck, overwhelmed, burned out, and ready to change. They are burdened with limiting beliefs that convince them they “can't change,” and they have no idea what the path looks like to get where they want to go next. Whether that sounds like personal growth jargon to you or not is irrelevant - what really matters are the results. Marcella is a shining example of the results that are possible when you put in the work. Growing up in San Antonio, Texas, Marcella didn't see a lot of other Mexican-American women becoming Hollywood film and television editors. Unconsciously this lack of representation held her back and even limited her dreams of what might be possible for her own career. She worked as a short form editor on digital lifestyle content for Fortune 500 magazine brands, but it wasn't until she mentored young women in high school that she realized she wanted more from her career. This led her to join the Optimizer coaching and mentorship program, and six months later the rest is history. In our conversation you'll hear how Marcella overcame her anxious thoughts, faced her fears, and discovered how much more she's capable of achieving. You'll also learn how she created a very clear (and very doable) path that has not only led Marcella to her first job as an assistant editor in scripted television, she's now mentoring other young women to pursue their passions in film and television becoming the representation she never had. → Click here to learn more about working with me in the Optimizer program Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: Marcella's history in editing and what brought her to the Optimizer community in January. The fears that held her back and made her doubt what she was capable of becoming. The challenges of being a Mexican American woman in editing. What led to Marcella ‘finding her why' that has kept her motivated to keep pursuing her dreams. The story behind Marcella's limiting beliefs and how she discovered her true passion in scripted film and television. How she dealt with the obstacle and fear of saying no to opportunities that weren't right. The importance of always providing value to others even when it means not getting what you think you want right away. KEY TAKEAWAY:  We're playing a game of chess not checkers. The factors that changed for Marcella to get her unlocked from her limiting beliefs. Marcella's ‘Tendency' and how she learned to deal with analysis paralysis. Learning your secondary tendency and how to manage it. Discovering how to pay attention to what you want and building awareness to patterns and habits that have been programmed since childhood. How being vulnerable in the Optimizer Community helped her get a job as a scripted AE. The incredible story of how Marcella nailed her interview to get the job she wanted. Marcella's advice for anyone wanting to start out on this journey who feels stuck and unsure of where to start. Guest Bio: Marcella is currently an assistant editor within the world of scripted television. Her desire to create, connect and collaborate with others to tell unique, impactful stories is what drives her to continuously grow within the film and television industry. Prior to becoming a scripted television assistant editor Marcella has worked as an editor for digital lifestyle content for Fortune 500 magazine brands and assisted on United Skates, an Emmy nominated documentary film. If you ask her what her greatest achievements have been over the past few years, she will say overcoming her own fears and limiting beliefs. This has allowed her to continuously reach her goals which has only fueled her to begin mentoring young, creative Mexican-American women from her hometown of San Antonio, Texas. By sharing her experience she hopes to inspire others. When she's not doing what she loves, she is drinking far too many Matcha lattes and biking around town. Welcome to another Words 4 Life discussion. Today I linked up with Jongnic Bontemps (JB), a film composer that has had the opportunity to land some nice opportunities in his first 9 years in the business. As a maestro of Silicon Valley, he wrote everything from the hip-hop infused score for the Tribeca-favorite documentary United Skates, to rousing additional music for the acclaimed film Creed II directed by Steven Caple Jr. He became the go-to composer for Caple Jr. while scoring his coming-of-age drama The Land, for which he also orchestrated the song “This Bitter Land” performed by Nas and Erykah Badu. Most recently, JB crafted an impactful and deeply personal score for the documentary film My Name is Pauli Murray, directed by Betsy West & Julie Cohen, the Oscar-nominated filmmaking team behind RBG. The film recently had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. JB has scored dozens of features, documentaries, shorts, and video games in all genres, fusing a contemporary sound with timeless emotion. His other credits include original scores for the Toni Braxton-led drama, Faith Under Fire, the Sundance selection Leimert Park produced by Charles King (Mudbound), and additional music for the new Epix series Godfather of Harlem starring Forest Whitaker. JB's scores have echoed at the Tribeca Film Festival, Cannes, the Warsaw Film Festival, Pan African Film Festival, and the American Black Film Festival, as well as at home on HBO, BET, Lifetime, Showtime, Netflix, Amazon Prime, PBS and Disney XD. JB's other recent projects include: the Netflix documentary Murder to Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story, Netflix's We Are: The Brooklyn Saints, the Lifetime biopic The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel, and Shondaland's Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker on Netflix. Upcoming releases include: March on Washington (National Geographic) set to premiere in February 2021 and The People VS The Klan (CNN) coming in April 2021.. In our discussion we talk about how he experienced what many would call success in the tech industry and gave it up to follow GOD's vision for his life. Our next guest is a uniquely modern film composer, harmonizing a classical education with his rich tech background as a maestro of Silicon Valley to write everything from the hip-hop infused score for the Tribeca-favorite documentary United Skates, to rousing additional music for Creed II. He's been the go-to composer for the latter film's director, Steven Caple Jr., including the score for the coming-of-age drama, The Land, where he also produced the song “This Bitter Land” for Nas and Erykah Badu. His music can be heard on dozens of features, documentaries, shorts, and videogames in all genres including the Toni Braxton-starring drama, Faith Under Fire, and the Sundance selection Leimert Park, produced by Charles King (Mudbound). He grew up in Brooklyn, learning the piano and soaked up his gospel and jazz surroundings. He studied music at Yale, then found himself at the heart of the tech industry as a software developer and entrepreneur. He has since decided to pursue his deeper passion and jumped head-first into the film scoring program at USC and the Sundance Film Music Lab. He apprenticed as a programmer for numerous A-list Hollywood composers, before breaking out as a singular solo composer. The composer is... For years, roller-skating rinks have been a constant for African-American communities across the U.S., serving as a meeting ground, a place to have fun and an incubator of iconic hip-hop talents like Queen Latifah and N.W.A. As America’s last standing roller rinks are threatened with closure, a community joins forces in a racially charged environment to save the underground African-American subculture of roller skating, which has been overlooked by the mainstream for generations – yet has given rise to some of the world's greatest musical talents. From executive producer John Legend and first-time directors Dyana Winkler and Tina Brown, the documentary UNITED SKATES highlights the dynamic world of roller skating, showcasing African-American rinks and skaters across the country as they fight to keep the culture alive and skate their hearts out. The film features interviews with hip-hop legends like Salt-N-Pepa, Coolio, Vin Rock of Naughty by Nature and World Class Wreckin’ Cru. UNITED SKATES spotlights three skaters fighting for their community: L.A. native Phelicia, a single mom who grew up in skates and hopes to keep skating alive for her children; North Carolinian Reggie, who lives hours from any rink that offers a night for black skaters and vows to launch his own; and Buddy Love, the owner of Chicago-based Rich City Skate, who struggles to keep his rink open, despite financial pressure. Co-directors Tina Brown and Dyana Winkler stop by to talk about their infectious and insightful look at a facet of African-American life in danger of fading away. Hey guys. Sorry I missed you last week! Before this Friday’s episode, I wanted to hit you with another unlocked episode. This year during the DC Black Film Festival we screened the documentary United Skates ahead of our Making Black Lives Matter Through Film Panel. You’ve already heard from co-director Dyana Winkler a couple of episodes ago, but I wanted you all to be able to hear the conversation as it was on stage, unedited. The panel was hosted by WHUR's EZ Street and panelists included: Dr. Erica L. James (professor Francis Marion), Damara Catlett (Principal at Raben Group), Reggie Brown (subject in the film), and Tim Gordon (film critic). Tomorrow, you’ll have the opportunity to see the film during the Congressional Black Caucus if you live in the DC area. The link to the film screening, which is free, is in the show notes. So if I haven’t promoted this film enough, here’s one more opportunity to check it out. I hope you enjoy the 2018 Making Black Lives Matter Through Film Panel just after the screening of United Skates and let me know your thoughts on the conversation!
