The gang is back! For the sequel to Eddie Murphy's nutty and crazy professor movie, The Nutty Professor 2! In this movie we see Sherman getting ready to get married to none other than Michael Jackson's sister! Janet Jackson stars in this hilarious comedy sequel. Professor Sherman Klump has created a new de-aging formula. He is also in love with DNA researcher, Denise Gaines, developer of a method to isolate genetic material. Despite his good fortune, Sherman's id alter ego, Buddy Love, has taken to sporadically controlling Sherman's body. Sherman becomes determined to permanently rid himself of Buddy when his antics corrupt Sherman's attempted proposal to Denise into a mortifying display of perversion. Despite his assistant, Jason, warning him of potential consequences, Sherman uses Denise's methodology to isolate and remove the DNA where Buddy has manifested. However, the Buddy genetic material grows into a sentient being when a hair from Jason's Basset Hound, Buster, accidentally lands in it. Sherman apologizes to Denise and they become engaged. Later, Dean Richmond informs them that Phleer Pharmaceuticals has offered Wellman College $150 million for the youth formula. Sherman and Denise then encounter the newly reformed Buddy at a movie theater. Buddy pickpockets Sherman and learns of the $150 million offer. He subsequently visits the pharmaceutical company, making a rival bid of $149 million with Leanne Guilford, President of Acquisitions, for the youth formula. Sherman learns that the extraction has altered his body chemistry and that he is losing his intelligence. Realizing he needs to keep the youth formula out of Buddy's hands, Sherman stashes it at his parents' home. Sherman's sexually frustrated father Cletus accidentally drinks some of the youth formula. He goes out for a night on the town and attempts to seduce his wife and Sherman's mother, Anna, but she is horrified. Buddy witnesses Cletus changing and realizes that the youth formula is being stored in the Klump household. Meanwhile, Sherman's condition causes him to act like a fool in front of Denise's parents, concerning her. Buddy steals some of the youth formula from the Klump household, filling the vial the rest of the way with fertilizer. This sabotage causes chaos at a demonstration the next day as Petey, the male hamster Sherman uses to demonstrate the formula, mutates into a giant monster who rapes Richmond as he is trying to escape under a fur coat, as Petey confuses him for Molly, the female hamster that escaped during the event. The humiliated and enraged Richmond fires Sherman, who soon learns from Jason that his brain's deterioration has worsened, so he decides to break up with Denise. Cletus consoles a depressed Sherman, and inadvertently gives him the solution to regaining his intelligence: getting Buddy Love back into his DNA. Meanwhile, a worried Denise discovers what has happened and that Sherman's brain damage is progressing. With Cletus' help, Denise goes after him. Sherman takes advantage of the canine DNA crossed with Buddy's and throws the tennis ball to distract him. Buddy catches the ball in his mouth, and the youth formula transforms him back into a glowing mass of sentient genetic material. Sherman chases the genetic material, intent on drinking it to correct his condition. However, it evaporates on the edge of a fountain before he can. Cletus and Denise arrive too late to save him, and Denise breaks into tears, which hit the genetic material and fall into the fountain. As they go to leave, Sherman looks into the fountain, remarking that it is "pretty". Seeing the water is glowing, Denise realizes the genetic material has reconstituted thanks to her tears and that if Sherman drinks the fountain water, he will be restored to normal. When he drinks it, he is able to restore his intelligence. Sherman and Denise later get married, while Cletus and Anna reconcile with each other.

Time to get nutty! The Nutty Professor remake reaction is here! Yes you read that correctly, this Eddie Murphy classic is a remake of the 1963 film The Nutty Professor. The Nutty Professor is a 1996 American science fiction comedy film starring Eddie Murphy. It is a remake of the 1963 film of the same name, which starred Jerry Lewis, which itself was a parody of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The film co-stars Jada Pinkett, James Coburn, Larry Miller, Dave Chappelle, and John Ales. Filming began on May 8, 1995 and concluded on September 8, 1995. The original music score was composed by David Newman. The film won Best Makeup at the 69th Academy Awards. Murphy portrays a university professor, Sherman Klump, a brainy and kind-hearted man who is morbidly obese. A research scientist, academic, and lecturer, Klump develops a miraculous, but experimental, weight-loss pharmaceutical, and hoping to win the affection of the girl of his dreams, tests it upon himself. Just like Julius Kelp from the original film, Klump's vigorous, charismatic, but evil alter ego takes the name "Buddy Love". Murphy plays a total of seven characters in the film, including Sherman and most of Sherman's family, consisting of Sherman's older brother, Sherman's maternal grandmother, and both of Sherman's parents. Sherman's nephew is the only member of the family not to be portrayed by Eddie Murphy. The film received positive reviews, with critics particularly praising the makeup and Murphy's performance. The film's success spawned a sequel, Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, released in 2000.

The impact that Blake Snyder's Save the Cat® book series has had on Hollywood screenwriting is incalculable. Rarely does a book change the way screenwriters approach story and structure. In his best-selling book, Save the Cat! Goes to the Movies: The Screenwriter's Guide to Every Story Ever Told, Blake Snyder provided 50 “beat sheets” to 50 films, mostly studio-made.Now his student, screenwriter and novelist Salva Rubio applies Blake's principles to 50 independent, auteur, European, and cult films (again with 5 beat sheets for each of Blake's 10 genres in the book Save the Cat!® Goes to the Indies: The Screenwriters Guide to 50 Films from the Masters. If you're a moviegoer, you'll discover a language to analyze film and understand how filmmakers can effectively reach audiences. If you're a writer, this book reveals how those who came before you tackled the same challenges you are facing with the films you want to write. Writing a “rom-com”? Check out the “Buddy Love” chapter for a “beat for beat” dissection of Before Sunrise, The Reader, Blue Is the Warmest Color, and more to see how Linklater and Krizan, David Hare, and Kechiche and Lacroix structured their films.Scripting a horror film? Read the “Monster in the House” section and discover how 28 Days Later and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre are the same movie – and what you need to do to write a scary story that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.Want to execute a great mystery? Go to the “Whydunit” chapter and learn about the “dark turn” that's essential to the heroes of The Big Lebowski, The French Connection, and Michael Clayton.Want your protagonist to go up against an evil “institution”? Consider how Mamet handled Glengarry Glen Ross and Tarantino's famed Pulp Fiction.Writing a “Superhero” story? See how Susannah Grant structured Erin Brockovich, Anderson & Baumbach worked out Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Gilliam & Stoppard & McKeown laid the foundation for Brazil. With these 50 beat sheets, you'll see how “hitting the beats” creates stories that resonate the world over for these outstanding writers—and how you can follow in their footsteps.Salva Rubio is a novelist, screenwriter, and author. He has been nominated at the Spanish Goya Awards for Best Animation Feature. As a graphic novel writer, some of his works have been published in America, including Monet, Itinerant of Light (nominated for an Eisner Award), and The Photographer of Mauthausen. Marcella is the only girl on this all power guys podcast with the Founder's Flock of Gallery Defi and our super cool co host Cruz. Get to meet all the incredible business and artists brains behind this insanely amazing new business model that you do not want to miss. Not only is the story how it all came about super intriguing and interesting - but it is even cooler to get to know every one of these powerhouses better and learn what they are all aboutand how they got to this point. Buddy DiFonzo, owns an incredibly successful women's contemporary apparel boutique and label in Fredricksburg, Texas called Buddy Love. https://buddylove.com/pages/fredericksburg-storeTheir label is now in over 1000 boutiques all over the country. You can find them on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/shopbuddylove/Buddy always wanted to collaborate with an artist to create a mural to honor the 7 police officers that were assaulted in downtown Dallas by machine guns in 2018 by a deranged man. What an incredible piece of art that was created first by James Goldcrown from Los Angeles, originally from London and then finished by the incredible Travis, NOT Travis McCann. Once Buddy and Travis met they were brainstorming and they knew they would create some sort of magic together and Buddy told Travis about The Museum Of Ice Cream that was made famous by the Kardashians. Buddy had the vision that they could do something like that only way cooler with an artist driven vision. They put on their very first show in 2018 with 20 world class artists and bigger than life sculptures and paintings and the show was super successful right out of the gates. With the team they have now they have been able to bring this concept back with the amazing 17.000 sq ft building in an incredible location in West Dallas, that is being developed and made beautiful. The City Of Dallas itself is putting 60 to 70 million Dollars into developing the infostructure. Travis McCann the artist who has a very iconic "2 hearts" signature is behind the incredible art in a lot of famous landmark restaurants and nightclubs in DFW and Austin, TX, for example the most Instagramable building in Dallas the XOXO restaurant. He tells us how he went from Travis to becoming NOT Travis. Fascinating story. Kyle Sauter is the operations guy and manager of the team and keeps everything together and running. Buddy says that without operations you can be the most creative and you can have a million concepts but to successfully deliver the mission and the product you have to have a director of operations and that is what Kyle does best. He is the glue that holds it all together. Kyle tells us how he started and ended up in this position at this time. So interesting and it even involves a zoom call with the Pope. He also talks about how challenging it can be to work with artists. Trey Swofford is the real estate genius and financial backer of this project and he says that as a long time friend of Travis he would always go to his shows and was so impressedby his friends work. He always knew they would work together in some form - they had talked about a clothing line before. As a group they now own another piece of property which will become the House of Defi.We found out a little secret that the real reason Trey wanted to get involved with all this, is because very beautiful women love art. :) Kyle says that Trey is also a General Contractor in this whole project and that is helping him a lot. They have such good vibes and they believe in each other and will do special things for sure. They are still awaiting one permit from the City of Dallas and then they can finish and open to the public. We are incredibly excited about it and cannot wait. https://www.instagram.com/buddylovexoxo/https://www.instagram.com/not.travis/https://www.instagram.com/ksaut/https://www.instagram.com/trey_gallerydefi/https://www.instagram.com/gallerydefi/Question Of The Day Segment:If you could be a fly on the wall who would you listen in on?WOW - some VERY interesting answers from the panel. Thank you for being here with me, Bruce Hilliard and today's guest Flood Dud, yes me, to talk about blind dates. You can say what you want about them, or even worse….go on one. This can be a marathon event to locate someone you like but with the right amount of perseverance I'll be finding a mate. There's no better defining moment between artificial intelligence, in this case the dating app on my iPhone, compared humanoids, in particular your friends that know what you like, than the blind dating process.  The blind dating process that involves a matchmaking algorithm that's set up to keep us using their app, flipping and flipping through screens in search of love only to meet this awe inspiring person and embarrassing yourself into permanent submission.  Smart Picks. Up sells. You have to budget your dating app investment to allow a few bucks for the date. I'm doing a reverse Houdini here. How hard can it be to get locked into a trick? I've become great at escaping but getting handcuffed and submerged in ice water in a coffin hanging from the Space Needle is getting harder and harder to find these days. I went on a college blind date when I was 19. It was possibly the funnest date ever for me. It was a WSU barn dance in a small grange building in the middle of a wheat field in the Palouse of Eastern Washington. She was a short freckled faced chubby girl in bib overalls and a “let's go have fun” face. We got drunk on the way there, parked on a small road and with only the light of far off grange we cut across the pitch dark field to save time. Without being able to see where hell we were, we fell ass-over-tea-kettle into a 15 foot deep irrigation ditch full of mud. It was so dark we couldn't see and when we realized we couldn't climb the slippery muddy embankment to escape the bowels of death, we started laughing. And man, it's hard to climb out of a muddy irrigation ditch when drunk and laughing hysterically.  Climbing out involved inadvertently pulling one another back to the bottom of the ditch which got us laughing to paralyzation. The picture we posed for later is one of the best mud photos ever taken at a dance. That was then, this is now. The dating scene for us old guys is brutal. If you're married, stay there. Don't be thinking you can put on your “hey I'm hittin' it now” look on and strut out there with the confidence of Buddy Love. I read in the one Christmas gift I received this year, Dating for Dummies, you should never talk about other women on these trial dates. So stay tuned because just as I felt the Titanic start to wobble and sink I played the “talk about other women” card. I was at the meet up bar before my mystery date and spotted her oddly shaped butt as she waddled though the doors. I waved to her and pulled out her chair. Something told me I was in for an awkward test of my character. We chatted for a minute and ordered. She said she was dying for a rum and coke so she ordered a Margarita and meatballs. I wanted a glass shard Tabasco smoothy but stuck with the near beer I'd been nursing before the princess arrived. Then the screening began. It began with the description of her favorite husband…the one that could do everything I do only far better. He played every instrument and was an awesome DJ. He was ambidextrous and had perfect pitch. I wanted to say “same here” but walking on water wouldn't have impressed this jaded lady. So it was my turn to impress. I wanted to use the airline joke and tell her in the unlikely event of a water landing, we could use her ego as a floatation device, but no. Here's what I did. I changed the topic to my YMCA friend Freya. My way too young Freya is happily married and is in no way romantically involved, at least that she knows of, with me. Freya was my helper smurf when I needed advice as to a place to meet this ice cold blind date super sized Slurpee.  My dear Freya, without hesitation texted me the name of this happy hour haven. It

On this week's episode of Fabulous Film & Friends, the regular crew is all back to dissect and probe the often-misunderstood genius of Jerry Lewis with his seminal 1963 masterwork, The Nutty Professor, which he co-wrote, directed and starred in alongside a very easy on the eyes,  Stella Stevens. Back once again for their invaluable insights on the matter are instructors and intellects in their own right:  Roseanne Caputi, David Johnson DMD, and of course, funnyman GORDON ALEX ROBERTSON!Before we explore the finer points: a synopsis! The Nutty Professor slays us with the antics of the good-natured, introverted and superficially unattractive Professor Julius F. Kelp, who, in order to win the affections of his star pupil, Ms. Stella Purdy, concocts a potion that transforms him from a hunched over and bucked-tooth nerd, verging on the grotesque, into a handsome, unrelentingly self-confident, chain-smokin' 60's swingin' ladies' man named Buddy Love.  Kelp and Buddy contend with their Jekyll and Hyde like tumultuous co-existence until they can no longer control it and finally at the big dance, Kelp, the university faculty and student body are face-to-face with the undeniable truth.  What is the meaning of it all? Find out!

How to Outline Any Story

Patrick E. McLean

Play Episode Listen Later May 12, 2021 10:08

There is a lot of advice about how to outline a story on the internet, and almost all of it was it was useless, so I stopped trying to wade through it. Like it's just bad content marketing run amok. So I'm going to give you the most useful ways I know to understand stories. The keys to the kingdom as I understand them. And trust me, not a single one of them is "Use mind mapping software."Let's say you want to understand a story. A book, a movie, graphic novel, TV show, play, series of tweets, radio drama... could be anything? How do you do it? You read it, of course, but that's not enough. Because stories have a kind of magic. They transport us to another place. And, if they are well constructed, we get swept along by them in a way that makes it difficult to analyze how they work while they are working on us. In fact, if you're watching a movie and you notice something like the beginning of the third act, chances are it's not a very good movie. Because when it's good, you're so engaged, you don't even think about that kind of stuff. So, I think, to really understand a story, you have to outline it. And that means, reading or watching it again, and writing down the bare bones of what happens. There is simply no wrong way to do this. Should you use a spreadsheet, or a notepad or index cards or mindmapping software? The answer is yes. Whatever makes it easy for you, because, whatever tool you use, you will learn something. And that's the point. So everything I have to say from this point forward is just to make it more profitable for you to do. See there are two reasons to do this. You want to write something of your own.You want to enjoy every story you encounter more. And, for me, #2 is by far the better reason. You're increasing the value of every story you're going to encounter for the rest of your life. That's what I call leverage.Stories can be tricky and the process can be confusing -- especially if you've had one too many English classes recently -- So I'm going to arm you with some of the conceptual tools I use to make things clear.Principle #1 -- Any story is a system of systems. So think of the elements of a novel. Dialog, character, symbolism, description, narration, plot, chaptering, paragraphing, setting -- it could go on and on and on. There are many, many ways to combine those elements to create a good novel. And no two authors do it the same way and no two authors should. So, in your outline, only pay attention to the systems that are interesting to you. If you don't see any great symbols, don't go looking for them. It's not a box you have to check off. What you want to understand is one level up from that. How all these systems work together.PlotOutlining a plot is as simple as writing down what happens in the beats of the story.Luke wants to join the rebellionThe droids run offLuke chases the droidsLuke is attacked by Sandmen and rescued by Obi-Wan KenobiAnd from that list, you can begin to understand the story. If you get stuck on what's important in a scene or why it matters, you can always ask, what happens if you don't have that scene in the story? There's a lot of other ways you can [[analyze a scene]], that's going to have to be a video of its own, but most of the time if you just get the basic beats of the story down, many new things about the story will become clear and that's what you want. Here are the questions to start asking of the plot? What started the story rolling? How did the character get into this mess? What does the character want? What happens if the character doesn't get it?From this list of beats, you want to get THREE things. External Story, Internal Story, and Theme.First, what's the external story. For Star Wars, the external story is blowing up the Death Star/defeating the Empire. The second thing you want to understand is the internal story. What does the character need psychologically, inside themselves, to be whole? Luke has to learn to trust himself and his abilities to reach his full potential. To use the Force Luke. And the third thing is the theme? What's the value that every scene or almost every scene turns on? That ties the whole thing together. The theme of Star Wars, loosely, is believing in something bigger than yourself. And while Luke's story resolves powerfully on this theme when uses the Force to blow up the Death Star, so too does Han Solo's story. He doesn't believe in the Force, or the Rebellion or anything. He bails out of the fight with the Death Star because he has a price on his head. He's looking out for himself. But he changes and we see this in action when he comes back in the end to save Luke so he can blow up the Death Star. So you might say, the theme is "Only when we believe in something bigger than ourselves can evil be defeated."GenreI think the most important thing you can know about any story is what genre it is in. People interested in literary fiction have looked down on genre fiction, but that prejudice certainly doesn't stop literary fiction from being its own genre. And what a genre does is set the reader's expectation of how things should be in the story. It's a set of conventions that the writer must deal with.Genre conventions are conventions about the way the systems of story interlock. Some of these conventions are obligatory scenes. Every thriller needs a daring escape scene. And a hero at the mercy of the villain scene. But these conventions extend to everything. Certain symbols or lines. A Bond movie isn't a Bond movie without spy gadgets, and a cool car, a scene with tuxedoes and evening gowns and the lines, "Shaken not Stirred" and "Bond, James Bond."Genre even extends to permissible themes. A romance novel cannot have a theme that denies that love is possible and still be a romance novel.FormClosely related to Genre is the form a story takes.Stories only have a limited number of forms. You could say there are five or seven or ten basic plots, and still be right. It's all in how you slice them. But if you think there are 50 basic plots, you are wrong. It may be an indefinable number, but it's finite and it's small. So it's also very useful to try to fit the story you outline to one of these structures.Dostoyevsky said there are only two plotsPerson goes on a journeyStranger comes to townChristopher Booker worked on his book Seven Basic Plots for 34 years and came up with these.Overcoming the MonsterRags to RichesThe Quest Voyage and ReturnComedyTragedyRebirthBlake Snyder, in his book, Save the Cat identified these 10 plots for film.Monster in the HouseGolden FleeceOut of the BottleDude with a ProblemRites of PassageBuddy LoveWhydunitThe Fool TriumphantInstitutionalizedSuperheroSo Cowboy Movie is a genre that includes many forms of story Unforgiven is a Voyage and Return story. And you could say it was a kind of Buddy Love. The Searchers is a Quest or Golden Fleece. Sci-Fi Movie is a genre that also includes a wide range of story forms. Alien is Overcoming the Monster or Monster in the House. You don't have to use either of these schemas for story form. Just have a good sense of what other stories the story you want to understand is like. If you say it's unlike any other story -- you haven't understood the form. CharacterThe last very easy thing to do when outlining is to make a list of major characters and look at how they stack up against each other. What's their function in the story and what would happen if they weren't there? What stance do they take on the theme? In Star Wars, Han Solo rejects the theme, then comes around in the end, enabling Luke to blow up the Death Star. He's the skeptic. And that kind of character is very powerful in fantasy novels. Because that character grants us permission to enter the reality. If it's all zealots and true believers in a fantasy world, it's harder for us to suspend disbelief. So Han Solo isn't just there to be cool, and he isn't just transportation for Luke, you lose a lot of meaning if you take his character out. And that's it. Well, I mean it's not everything. Outlining a story certainly can be more complicated than that, but it doesn't have to be. Just write down the beats and ask a few questions and a whole new world will open up to you. Even if you never write anything of your own, outlining a story will help you to enjoy and appreciate every other story more. And that's worth something. Caroll Montgomery also known as Buddy Love is one of GUGO's team members. Buddy served 28 years for murder in various federal prisons throughout the US. While his journey initially encompassed a share of volatile behavior in order to thrive in prison, his personal faith in God led to his constructive transformation within the confines of a prison cell. His personal experience at Red Onion, a federal prison in Virginia led to formation of a program for youth named the Young Men Incorporated. Buddy became a light in the midst of darkness and an agent of change to help redirect the lives of youth. His transformation eventually led to his release on good behavior. Buddy continues to be God and passion driven in his work with youth. As a Credible Messenger for GUGO, he continues to mentor youth within the confines New Beginnings Youth Center in Maryland and the Youth Service Center in DC. He hopes to help youth redirect their lives to become assets to their families and communities instead of liabilities to an already failing criminal justice system.

This crew returns this week with another great episode. This one is geared more toward our male audience, as we discuss different topics in sports. First things first, the crew recaps the finale of "The Last Dance". We discuss Micheal Jordan and the 98 Championship Bull's last season. We also discuss the possibility of that team getting its 7th Championship if they were able to play together for one more year. After some basketball talk, the crew then discusses the new changes made in the NFL's diversity policy. Are these changes progressive ? Or do they confirm what we already knew about the NFL and its lack of inclusion for POC. Tune in for another great episode and let us know what you think!

Does this count as an Eddie Murphy classic? Sure, it's no Coming to America, it's no Beverly Hills Cop and it's no Golden Child - BUT - it's also no Norbit, The Haunted Mansion, or Holy Man - so, you know, it could be a lot bloody worse. Join us as we put on our freudian hats and over-analyse the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde that is Dr Sherman and Buddy Love, and decide once and for all, if this movie holds up today, or is best left in the past.

For years, roller-skating rinks have been a constant for African-American communities across the U.S., serving as a meeting ground, a place to have fun and an incubator of iconic hip-hop talents like Queen Latifah and N.W.A. As America’s last standing roller rinks are threatened with closure, a community joins forces in a racially charged environment to save the underground African-American subculture of roller skating, which has been overlooked by the mainstream for generations – yet has given rise to some of the world's greatest musical talents. From executive producer John Legend and first-time directors Dyana Winkler and Tina Brown, the documentary UNITED SKATES highlights the dynamic world of roller skating, showcasing African-American rinks and skaters across the country as they fight to keep the culture alive and skate their hearts out. The film features interviews with hip-hop legends like Salt-N-Pepa, Coolio, Vin Rock of Naughty by Nature and World Class Wreckin’ Cru. UNITED SKATES spotlights three skaters fighting for their community: L.A. native Phelicia, a single mom who grew up in skates and hopes to keep skating alive for her children; North Carolinian Reggie, who lives hours from any rink that offers a night for black skaters and vows to launch his own; and Buddy Love, the owner of Chicago-based Rich City Skate, who struggles to keep his rink open, despite financial pressure. Co-directors Tina Brown and Dyana Winkler stop by to talk about their infectious and insightful look at a facet of African-American life in danger of fading away. This week we’re getting a little silly, nutty if you will, with the 1996 remake of The Nutty Professor.  This is a heartwarming story we can all relate to.  A man falls in love with a woman, that seems to have feelings for him, and then completely reconstructs his DNA to try to win her heart.  Sherman Klump is a brilliant scientist and a college professor with a little bit of a weight problem.  Once Sherman meets the lovely young Carla Purty he is instantly smitten with her and will do anything to win her heart, including taking an experimental potion that may help him lose weight.  The potion transforms Sherman into Buddy Love, a wild man with too much testosterone flowing through his veins, who is also vying for Carla’s affection.  Eventually Sherman realizes that Buddy is not the man he wants to be and he fights to stay the man that he is.  Spoiler, it is a happy ending and he and Carla are together at last, until the next movie when Janet Jackson shows up.

Welcome back to another episode of the DrumGAB podcast.  It's only days away from Valentines' Day and ironically I interviewed Buddy Love from Love Custom Drums.  Buddy and Steve make some beautiful kits and I don't think you can argue that.  However, after speaking with Buddy, I am beginning to understand that this company is so much more than gorgeous drums.  There is an overwhelming sense of...well....LOVE in this company.   In the beginning, Buddy modified his DW drum kits.  He had multiple kits and did everything from reworking bearing edges and even wrapping a shell in skateboard grip tape.  After a while, he wanted a kit with tube lugs and DW was not able to hook that up.  So what did Buddy do?  He took matters into his own hands and began building drums.  There was a problem that was beginning to occur, though.  Every time he built a kit, it would sell.  He saw this as his opportunity to begin Love Custom Drums. I ask Buddy a variety of questions regarding different wood shell construction.  Ply vs Steam Bent vs Stave shells.  It is interesting and educational what Buddy has to say about the different build techniques, which leads us into, my question as to why he feels the need to learn everything there is to learn about building drums.  His response to this question is inspiring. We discuss another prospect with Love Custom Drums..."Old Steel".  What is "Old Steel"?  Well, it is kind of a crazy story about the original idea and how it was turned into something so much greater than Buddy could have imagined.  Buddy goes into explaining how he prefers metal drums over wood and how the gnarly patina is where it is at for Buddy. Getting to the near end of the interview I thought it would be nice to talk about the late Johnny Craviotto and his fondness for him.  This was Buddy's hero.  He goes on to explain his encounters with Johnny and a special dinner invitation by Ronn Dunnett.  A truly touching segment of the interview and it is just great to hear the level of respect that Buddy has for this true legend....plus we geek out about his 2002 DW Craviotto snare and my 2001 DW Craviotto snare...kinda cool that we both own this rare drum. I then ask Buddy to reflect on the past two years and try to imagine where Love Custom Drums might be in two years.  You cannot deny the huge amount of growth and level of interest in the brand and that they had a successful year.  I wish the Love team all of the best and it was an absolute treat to speak with Buddy on this incredible little company.
