The name Steven Weston is gaining more prominence, which is well overdue given his impressive career in music. His CV includes an engineering background working with artists ranging from drum and bass act Rudimental to reggae artist Chronixx, while he's toured the world playing keyboards for the likes of Ladyhawke, Charli XCX, and Mikky Ekko. Weston also counts James Lavelle as a fan, having regularly collaborated with the veteran for 10 years now. But his passion lies in deep, progressive music, and since entering the arena he's signed to labels such as Anjunadeep, Bedrock, and Last Night On Earth. With tracks from GMJ, Durante, UNKLE, and Duo State, this Balance Selections mix highlights a music purveyor who lives and breathes the intricacies of the sound he has dedicated himself to. @stevenweston

In his youth, he was greatly inspired by the likes of Quincy Jones and Curtis Mayfield, before discovering hip hop. He originally formed Nightmares on Wax in 1988 as a group project alongside John Halnon, with Kevin Harper joining later, but after one album it became solely his project. He debuted on Warp Records with A Word of Science in 1991, and has since released eight studio albums, various mixes and DJed countless gigs across the globe.Jazz trumpeter, composer and producer Theo Croker is known for his adventurous playing and determination to expand the horizons of jazz. He took up the trumpet around age 11 after being inspired by his grandfather, the legendary Doc Cheatham, and has released seven studio albums. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae shot to fame in 2006 with her self-titled UK number one debut album. She's known for her soul-rooted indie sound and has collaborated with everyone from Mary J Blige and Al Green to Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.Electronic musician, DJ and label owner James Lavelle is best known for his work under the Unkle moniker. Questions: Unusual blood sugar fluctuations Jack writes: Hi Robb, Long-time fan of your work, first time trying to reach out to you. Thanks very much for any insight you are able to provide. I have been tracking my blood sugar levels over the past 6 months after getting some results from my primary care provider that showed my fasting blood glucose at 93, and my HgA1C at 5.6. Both of these have steadily crept up over the past 5 years. My primary care provider was not concerned because I technically didn't fall outside of any "normal" range, but I have tried making my way through a good chunk of "Your Blood Never Lies" by James LaVelle, and I decided to try to dig into my tendencies a bit more after seeing a number of things "trending" in the wrong direction, though still "normal." I am a 38-year-old father of two kids ages 1 and 3, and I want to do the best I can to optimize my health for them. I am about 162 lbs and roughly 12% bodyfat. Resting heart rate hovering in the high 40s and low 50s, blood pressure typically about 115/65. After getting a home glucose monitoring kit and tinkering with my diet, I found a decent rhythm and meal plan that allows me to largely avoid blood sugar spikes throughout the course of the day. I almost never see my blood sugar rise higher than about 125, and only once or twice saw it higher than 140 in the past 6 months. I respond decently well to my meals and snacks per the recommendations Chris Kresser gave for 1, 2, and 3 hour post eating readings. For a period of time, my fasting blood glucose was pretty consistently between 78 and 90, which I was very excited about. However, over the past 5-6 weeks I have been getting lots of high 90s, low 100s, and even some 110-115. Interestingly, my blood sugar will fall lower though throughout the day (typically to between 90-110, even down to as low as 80 in the late afternoon when I get home from work). I am a strength and conditioning coach and currently get to workout 3-4 times per week for 30 minutes or so doing kettlebell circuits and the occasional run. My sleep has not been particularly great the past several months due to my son and daughter's nightime routines and sleep habits. I have lately tried to go to bed earlier when my daughter does in an attempt to get about 8 hours, but it was routine for me to get more like 6.5-7.5 hours "in bed," while oftentimes waking up several times per night and/or having a tough time falling asleep. I eat pretty well, though not 100% clean, during the week, and kick my heels back a bit on the weekend with some pizza and booze, but I wouldn't say I completely blow the doors off. These diet practices have been pretty consistent during the period of time before my morning blood sugar began to consistently be lower, and also now that it has gradually crept higher over the past 5-6 weeks. A) What do you think could be causing morning blood sugar to be on the "higher" side even if I eat fairly low/clean carb and haven't changed much diet wise over the past 6 weeks? B) If morning glucose is "high" but returns quickly to these 100-110 levels after my eating most of the time and I rarely spike higher than 125 or so, is that still bad for my health, or is an elevated "baseline" ok as long as I don't consistently get higher than 140 or so as I read in Kresser's article? Thanks so much for any insight you can share! Staying Paleo in the Mountains Lucia writes: Hi, I'm 39 years old and I practice mountaineering. World wide the food recommended while being in the mountains specially over the 4000 meters (where the body battles to adapt to less oxygen and lower temperatures) is a diet rich in carbs and sugars to access glucose faster, since the physical demand is huge and these are easier to access. Since it´s particularly important to reduce the amount of weight we carry in our backpacks and we are not able to keep this food refrigerated, I´m wondering if you are familiar with this activity, and what would you suggest to eat, and how during an ascent and the days before and after, to stay paleo and cover the demands of my body. Ps: I usually loose a lot of weight every time i go, that includes tons of muscle lost. BJJ in your 40s Chris writes: Dear Robb and Nicki, Thanks so much for the great podcast. Lovin it!:) I have a question regarding BJJ: I'm turning 39 next month and a bit in a midlife crisis: I'm pretty fit, doing my zone 2 and strength training regularly but I miss a bit the elements of play and community in my life. Zone 2 workouts are a bit lonely:) I know you two are doing Jiu Jitsu and I want to give it a try. Do you have any tips for starting with 39 and training into your 40s? How do you avoid injuries? Any chance to keep nice ears?:) How did your training approach evolve? My goal is character development and community. Do you think BJJ is ideal for that? Hope you have some insight! After splitting from Depeche Mode in 1995, Alan Wilder focused his full attention on Recoil, his side-project going back to the mid-1980s. In 1997, the same year DM released "Ultra," Wilder released the fourth Recoil studio album, "Unsound Methods." Free to explore the electronic soundscape, Wilder enlisted several vocalists to tackle the electronic/trip-hop material, including Douglas McCarthy from Nitzer Ebb and NYC spoken word artist Maggie Estep. The result is both of the time and ahead of its time, fitting in nicely with the mid-90s trip-hop sounds of Massive Attack, Sneaker Pimps, and Portishead, while also foreshadowing the more experimental and cinematic sounds of James Lavelle's Unkle. "Mini Mansions" are a three piece indie rock band from California, formed in 2010.You could kind of consider them to be a mini supergroup, as the line-up features full-time members from "Queens of The Stone Age" as well as members from "The Last Shadow Puppets" and "Arctic Monkeys".Over the course of three full length albums and a slew of EP's, "Mini Mansions" have explored a lo-fi rock sound that often times aligns itself more with a 60's pop orientated sound, with inspirations such as Pink Floyd and The Beatles.Join us as we dive deeper into the sonic world of this underground band."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

This week, we take a trip to 123 Studios in Peckham, south London, to interview the studio's owner, Brett Shaw. We speak to him about how his production skills are built on a foundation of engineering expertise, working on sprawling album projects, building your own preamps, and what it's like recording the vocal for a multi-platinum Grammy-winning single. Brett started his music career as multi-instrumentalist in the band South, who signed to Mo' Wax in the late 90s, a cult record label founded by UNKLE's James Lavelle, who co-produced the band's debut album. After the band, Brett set up his own recording space, engineering the vocals on many hit records, including multi-platinum mega-hit 'Rather Be' by Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynn, which went 4x platinum, wining a Grammy and Ivor Novello awards. In recent years, Brett's collaborated with the band Foals to produce their double album ‘Everything not saved will be lost', and worked from the ground up with Florence and the Machine to produce their album ‘High Is Hope' - both records earned a Mercury nomination. Other credits with Mura Masa, Gorillaz, daughter, Swim Deep and Kindness round out an impressive resumé. The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. "UNKLE" is a British musical outfit founded in 1992 by James Lavelle.James was the founder of iconic UK record label "MoWax". A label known for championing underground hip-hop in the 90's and bringing artists like DJ Shadow to prominence in the UK. The "UNKLE" was project was something James had been trying to work on for over a decade before he decided to ask Shadow for help in producing the material. What resulted was the cult classic "Psyence Fiction" which dropped in 1998.Since those early days, "MoWax" as a functioning label is no longer, and DJ Shadow has moved on to his own illustrious career. But James has stuck it out with "UNKLE", producing multiple albums with new producers and collaborating with artists such as Josh Homme from Queens of The Stoneage and singer/songwriter Mark Lanegan. In this episode Jay and Jesse explore the origins of UNKLE and James Lavelle. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Industry leader and top earner, James Lavelle, was a (self-proclaimed) product of his environment, raised believing that drinking and drugs were just a normal part of life. As a teen, he was kicked out of school and told that he'd never amount to anything. But after losing his father, he realized that there "had to be more."Determined to find it, he joined the British Army, and, for the first time in life, learned discipline.2013 joined the Network Marketing industry and quickly rose to the top rank, crediting his success to the mindset and discipline that he learned during this time in the Army. Then, it all fell apart. He gives credit to to this loss and struggle because it is what set him up for his current success! How'd he find the courage to start over? He'll tell you!Be sure to check out the opportunity to Run With Rob, and receive one-on-one daily coaching from Rob Sperry: https://www.runwithrob.robsperry.com/

Guess who’s coming… IT’S… Guess who’s coming… IT’S j-j-j-just your favourite DJ saviour / using and confusing beats that you never heard / since / 1990… Ladies and gentlemen, he’ll put a smile on your face like Ultra Brite - it’s DJ SHADOW!“…Not every musical moment affects people the same way…”A great rare treat for Shadow heads and crate digging nerds, and those who appreciate a good old fashioned music chat right here, but not only that - of course Pip and Shadow get to some really interesting ground when not dealing with the musical matters at hand, including his growing up in a remote town with limited access to hip hop which leads nicely onto how he eventually did find his way in, which then leads us into the whole Mo Wax side of things where he met and worked with James Lavelle extensively for a contained period (the foundation for which being laid by discovering NME, Melody Maker and also by the very intro of Nation Of Millions by Public Enemy - “LONDON, ENGLAND…!!!”), the Entroducing / Soldesides / Unkle / Brainfreeze eras, dealing with fan expectations and of course being taken out of context in hilarious style, nutritional value of rap from then and now, the current album ‘Our Pathetic Age’ and a breakdown of lead track ‘Rosie’, conjuring live sets and so much more which is all there for you to discover! Such a good one. The Lot49 record label is owned by Dylan Rhymes and Meat Katie was setup in June 2004. Lot49 quickly became one of the most talked about dance music labels with the sole purpose of releasing dancefloor 12"'s from the finest artists around. Lot49 pushes the tech-funk sound, a hybrid of electro, house, techno and breaks in varying forms. Lot49 has picked up support from Deep Dish, The Plump DJs, Adam Freeland, Sander Kleinenberg, Pete Tong, James Lavelle and John Digweed to name just a few. Today Lot49 has the following artists signed to its label Lee Combs, Ben Coda, Vandal, Dopamine, Beat Tempest, Metha and JamBasha's own Chevy One! Underbeat Trust ran an awesome boat party on the Thames for the Lot49 label and my podcast Episode 58 was recorded live at the afterparty in Islington where I kicked off proceedings with an hour set. This was the same night Man United lost to Barcelona in the champions league final sorry Mr Mouse.... This set is my take on Tech Funk with a mix of Techno, Electro and some big bad Breakbeats. Turn it up, Big Love. Rubber
Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground MovementKing Unique is Matt Thomas, an all round studio junkie and dj with a taste for tripped-out cosmic techno and rough-edged underground house; in a career spanning nearly a decade KU’s distinctive sound has won an enviable global following. A ceaseless schedule of dj sets and festival gigs backed up by relentless studio sessions resulting in scores of records, remixes and radio broadcasts has made the KU sound an instantly recognizable part of the music-life of millions of the world’s clubbers - and a fixture in the vinyl crates, cd wallets and laptops of the world’s most influential djs. Consistently appealing across genres the tracks have been played by everyone from Sasha to Soulwax, Richie Hawtin to Tiesto, and have turned up everywhere from Hollywood soundtracks to mobile ringtones - not to mention countless compilations and mix albums.Formed in 2001 by Matt Thomas & Matthew Roberts, King Unique hit the floor running, claiming the title of Undisputed Remix Champs by scoring five Essential New Tunes in five months on Pete Tong's "Essential Selection" Radio 1 show. A US Billboard Dance Chart number 1 for the remix of Dirty Vegas’ “Walk Into The Sun”, plus two more solo Essential New Tunes for Matt under his Watkins and Mainframe alter-egos saw KU firmly cement their place amongst the ranks of first-call remixers. The King Unique production touch has been in constant demand since, appearing on more than fifty remixes and yielding some of the biggest dance floor bombs known to man - Underworld's "Two Months Off", The Killers "Somebody Told Me", Planet Funk’s “The Switch”, The Teamsters "Feels Like Love", and Chable and Bonicci’s "Ride".2006 saw the end of the original duo’s studio partnership, as Matt Thomas took on the King Unique role as a solo artist. The two years since have seen the KU sound taken to new heights with a mixture of euphoric acidic melodies, dark brooding techno vibes and old skool beats. Remixes of Tracey Thorn’s “Grand Canyon”, Gabriel & Dresden’s “Tracking Treasure Down” and an ’08 remix of KU’s own “Sugarhigh” have reaffirmed his status as one of the most versatile and consistent producers of the last ten years. Most recently Matt has produced a stunning reworking of “Heaven” for James Lavelle’s UNKLE project, as well as remixes for Junkie XL, Paolo Mojo and Miami art-punk fashionistas Organicarma. The renowned King Unique dj set has made KU a regular addition to the line up of some of the world's most respected clubs and biggest festivals, playing everywhere from ultra-hip blacked-out sweat boxes in Tokyo to euphoric crowds of thousands on the tropical beaches of Madeira. Regular gigs for super-brands such as Renaissance and Ministry Of Sound coupled with an increasingly hectic international schedule has seen Matt racking up enough air-miles for a free trip to the moon, with gigs in Sydney, Osaka, Barcelona, Shanghai, Lima, Bucharest, Auckland, Bogota, Singapore, Chelyabinsk, Malta, Vilnius - just to name a handful from recent months. Since the very first shows Matt has pushed at the cutting edge of the technology revolution that's swept through club culture, taking laptops, new gadgets and studio gear into the booth. 2009 sees the addition of the near mythic Monome controller to the sonic armoury - part track-mangling Ableton controller and part psychedelic light show, lovingly hand built by techno-hippies in the Catskill Mountains.Playlist:01.
