The parody stickers Gen-X kids loved.Episode 147 starts June off with some fun and unusual nostalgia. Some advertising mascots become iconic. They seep into the very fabric of our consciousness. Then there's Mr. Delicious. An attempt at an 'adult' mascot for an 'adult' fast food chain, Mr. Delicious was one part ingenious and one part mind-numbingly ridiculous. The fate of Rax Roast Beef depended on its success so we'll dive into just who Mr. Delicious was thanks to a short documentary created by Rax in 1992.Weird is in the eye of the beholder. When it comes to weird jobs most people's opinions will differ. In this week's Top 5, however, most will agree that these jobs are different from the average 9 to 5. Some are lost to history while others you could actually apply for today.Gen-X kids likely have fond memories of collecting and sharing Wacky Packages stickers. For those unfamiliar they were, and still are, well-crafted parodies of popular products. We're going to go way Back In the Day to reminisce about Wacky Packages and just what made them so popular with '70s and '80s kids. There will be a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule centered around the retirement of the Great Bambino, the Sultan of Swat, 20th-century icon Babe Ruth. For more great content become a subscriber on Patreon!Helpful Links from this EpisodeThe Lady of the Dunes.comPurchase My New Book Cape Cod Beyond the Beach! In My Footsteps: A Cape Cod Travel Guide(2nd Edition)Hooked By Kiwi - Etsy.comWear Your Wish.com - Clothing, Accessories, and moreDJ Williams MusicKeeKee's Cape Cod KitchenChristopher Setterlund.comCape Cod Living - Zazzle StoreSubscribe on YouTube!Initial Impressions 2.0 BlogMr. Delicious DocumentaryWacky Packs.comListen to Episode 146 here Support the Show.
What a time to be alive
Compound Yellow's featured artist Gary Cannone dominates every part of the compound with his LA from Chicago brand of conceptual art. Fun name drops include Bernini and Maritizo Catalan. Tune in for the rest. bio: Gary Cannone (Guerino Giovanni Cannone) was born in 1964 to Italian immigrants working factory jobs in Chicago. He learned english from American 70s television and was obsessed with Norm Crosby, Carol Burnett, the Three Stooges, Mad Magazine, Wacky Packages, and the Marx Brothers. His grandfather (and namesake) was crushed to death by a pool table the day before Cannone's eighth birthday in a warehouse accident. He played in the early 80s leftist punk rock band The Leeches but, as his interest in performing music waned, he saw Vito Aconcci lecture and decided to become an artist. Cannone exhibited conceptual and often dadaistic art while headquartered from Chicago, Rome, and Los Angeles until he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2013. As the disease took a toll on his body, he took a hiatus but began to work again digitally using social media to distribute art and jokes. Interest in his communal project of parody album covers “Albums by Conceptual Artists” led to invitations to exhibit again. He began exploring the effects of his disease on his body and brain which led him back to the comedic tropes he loved so much as a youngster; adressing his disability through the lens of slapstick rather than advocacy. Cannone's recent work can be described as a decidedly reductive art executed with the deft skill of a prop comic. The resulting ensemble explores fragility, instability, urges, communication, humiliation, tension, torture, gravity, parody, dexterity, and death. https://compoundyellow.com/ https://garycannone.studio/

Welcome back to KnockBack! This week, instead of focusing-in on a specific game, movie, TV show, or whatever, we thought we'd do another one of our reminiscing episodes instead. Thus, today, our focus is card collecting. At different stages of his childhood, Dagan collected Star Wars cards, Garbage Pail Kids, Wacky Packages, and even caught the Smurfs bug. Colin, meanwhile, went through three distinct card-collecting phases: Sports (baseball and hockey), IP (Marvel Universe and GI Joe), and outright gaming cards (Magic and Star Wars CCG). So join us as we recollect on the time-consuming, money-demanding, and strangely-addictive world of card collecting that we were both sucked into at one time, and which many of you out there are still very much involved with today. Tonight we have another artist spotlight. Robert Jimé on the show. He is a fantastic artist who has another set of pulp cover cards coming out in Star Wars Card Trader, and that is among the many other projects he is working on is . If you are on the socials you can find him and his work under the Zerostreet handle or if you go to zerostreet.shop online you can see a lot of his distinctive work. Considering that we are not too far from the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, his work on the pulp covers and his style fits in perfectly to the aesthetic. From His Bio: “Robert's imagination and desire to draw were first fueled by his frequent visits to the corner newsstand in his Brooklyn neighborhood to purchase comic books, especially those that featured the art of Neal Adams, George Perez, and Jim Aparo. Later, the films seen on local TV, everything from the comedies of Abbott & Costello and The Marx Brothers, B Monster movies, and especially the Planet of the Apes series, left a definite imprint in his work. Incorporating an ever-growing cast of Apes, Tikis, and appearances from the likes of Doc Savage, Tarzan, The Shadow, and more, he is creating a unique narrative through his paintings and sculptures. Robert's work has appeared on album covers for Gold Dust Lounge and Stolen Idols and in magazines such as Exotica Moderne, Tiki Magazine, PKD Otaku, Gnarly and Pinstriping & Kustom Graphics. His work is also featured in the books, THE THING:ARTBOOK, VISIONS FROM THE UPSIDE DOWN: STRANGER THINGS ARTBOOK, GHOSTBUSTERS: ARTBOOK and has shown in galleries including Disneyland's Wonderground, Harold Golen, M Modern, Creature Features, and Bear & Bird among others. You can also see Robert's work in trading card sets for licenses such as Garbage Pail Kids, Wacky Packages, Mars Attacks, Star Wars, DC Comics, Firefly, Ghostbusters, Adventure Time and more. Most notably Robert has recently illustrated cards for the Star Wars Trading Card App.” Speaking of Indy, I had a blast talking with Dan Zehr on Coffee with Kenobi about the Last Crusade as part of his series on the films leading up to the premiere. It was fun talking with him and Dennis Keithly from Podcast Stardust on that show. Art Spiegelman has almost single-handedly brought comic books out of the toy closet and onto the literature shelves. In 1992, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his masterful Holocaust narrative Maus— which portrayed Jews as mice and Nazis as cats. Maus II continued the remarkable story of his parents’ survival of the Nazi regime and their lives later in America. As creative consultant for Topps Bubble Gum Co. from 1965-1987, Spiegelman created Wacky Packages and Garbage Pail Kids. In 1980, Spiegelman founded RAW, the acclaimed avant-garde comics magazine, with his wife, Françoise Mouly—Maus was originally serialized in the pages of RAW. Join us for a discussion of Art’s latest work, “Foolish Questions” a New York Review of Books article on screwball comic strips, and his storied career in this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI.

Trading cards, from Wacky Packages to Star Wars and beyond!
It's a November 13th episode and on the television show “The Odd Couple” that's the date it all started. Tonight on loan from Gilbert Gottfried's podcast is Frank Santopadre. A jack of all trades Frank has written on everything including Bazooka Joe bubble gum comics to the Saturday Morning show “Garbage Pail Kids” to “The View”. When I give him a moment to talk he's quite fascinating, but who has time to stop talking. There's so much on the docket this week. A ridiculous Jets win (how did Vegas know), Justin Bieber in a prayer group with the Steelers and comparing a 40 year old classic comedy television show to what else but, Mulaney. We really cover it all this week from Wacky Packages to Juskow stalking the girl who voiced Lucy in the Peanuts. I only wish I was kidding. It's a great episode. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Lots o' comics, lots o' discussion, and lots o' fun. What more could you ask for in a comics podcast?
