Part 13 Every cult without exception denies the doctrine of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Although they may utilise concepts such as grace and faith, what is written outside the box is never what's inside. In the world of cults, grace becomes synonymous with payment because when everything has been said and done, the cult member is working to earn salvation. At the very best Jesus died on the cross to give mankind the possibility of obtaining salvation. He has merely opened the narrow gate but now it's left to those who would obtain it to labour. It is for this reason that whether Jehovah's Witness or Seventh-day Adventist; whether Mormon or Roman Catholic, when the question is put to them; “If you die tonight, do you have 100% assurance that you are saved”? The answer that one will be met with again and again is; “I can't say for sure, it's up to God”. With this one simple question and the answer returned, the futility of the cult's works-based system of salvation is revealed for what it is, vanity of vanities!! There is a world of difference between what the Bible teaches about how a man is saved, and what the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society teaches. In this final teaching part, these differences shall be discovered and the way of truth exposed. Part 11 If one has ever been greeted by a Jehovah's Witness at the door, after the short and brief courtesies of “Hello, my name is… etc.”, the conversation will inevitably begin with a question like; “What do you think of all the wars in the world today?” or, “Do you think the world is a nice place to live in with all the evil that is in it?”. These questions are leading and are designed to provoke a response of sympathy from the hearer. From this point on, the Witness at the door will proceed to tell of a coming kingdom of peace on earth where wars will cease, and death will be no more. For Jehovah's Witnesses, Paradise Earth is what the Millennial will be for Christians, except for a few major differences. Firstly, Paradise Earth in Watch Tower eschatology is not restricted to a thousand years but is forever! Secondly, and more importantly, Jesus will be nowhere present on Paradise Earth, He will be in heaven with Jehovah and the angels, governing over the affairs of the earth with the 144,000! I have a question for Jehovah's Witness: "How can paradise be paradise without Jesus being there?”. Furthermore, what about the new heaven and the new earth which the Bible speaks of, along with the new Jerusalem wherein shall dwell the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb forever, and the Saints shall come in through the city gates? These things along with more shall be the focus of this eleventh teaching part as the beliefs of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society are compared with the Bible. Part 10 Jehovah's Witnesses have long been a cult that has aggressively opposed the doctrine of hell, as can be seen in their literature and publications. Charles Taze Russell, the founder of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, was himself an ardent opponent of this doctrine, as has been every presiding president over Jehovah's organisation since. Though beginning within the ranks of conservative orthodoxy, by the time Russell had outgrown his teens, he had left both Presbyterianism and Congregationalism because he could not reconcile the idea of a loving and merciful God sending billions to an eternal hell. To this day, after nearly a century and a half, Russell's disciples continue to hold to his beliefs and teachings. In this teaching, we examine the beliefs of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society as they relate to the doctrine of hell and contrast this with what the Bible teaches. Part 8 So far, the studies in this series have largely focused on the person of Jesus Christ. Whilst Jehovah's Witnesses are monotheistic in belief, they are aggressively antitrinitarian in expression. They, like us, believe in one eternal God. The point of divergence comes however when they maintain that the singular being of God is without a plurality of persons. The doctrine of the Trinity affirms that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society denies this truth and attacks this position throughout its written literature. The purpose of this teaching is to address the heresy of the Watch Tower as it relates to the person of the Holy Spirit. Jehovah's Witnesses deny the person of the Holy Spirit and instead teach that the Holy Spirit is God's active force. Journey with us as we examine this heresy in light of Biblical truth. Download teaching notes (pdf) https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/bethesdashalom/8_The_Person_of_the_Holy_Sprit.pdf
Part 5 To deny the deity of Jesus Christ is to be left with a question of paramount importance that demands an answer. If Jesus is not God, then who is He? The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society have their answer to this question as do the Muslims and the New Agers. However, when one looks at the alternatives being offered, it becomes deplorable. Heretics think that by robbing Christ of His place in the Triune Godhead and stripping Him of His deity, they automatically disqualify themselves from needing to provide a rigorous argument for their claim. When one puts the question to Jehovah's Witnesses, “Who was Jesus Christ before coming to earth” the answer that they will give is Michael the Archangel. In the absence of any meaningful biblical support, we shall weigh this claim against a mountain of evidence to the contrary and demonstrate that Jesus is none other than God. Download teaching notes (pdf) https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/bethesdashalom/5_Is_Jesus_Michael_the_Archangel.pdf
Part 3 Jehovah's Witnesses, like all true Christians of every denomination, are monotheistic in their expression of belief. They, like us, believe in one eternal God. The point of divergence comes however when they maintain that the singular being of God is without a plurality of persons. The doctrine of the Trinity affirms that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society deny this truth and aggressively attacks this position in its written literature. In this teaching, we take to task the literature of the Watch Tower and counter its heretical claims with Biblical truth. For Jehovah's Witnesses, the name of God which it maintains is Jehovah is everything. But is His name Jehovah? Does history bear this out? How should the divine name of God (Tetragrammaton) be transliterated? What if, from the Watch Tower's own Bible, one could prove that Jesus is Jehovah? We endeavour to answer all these questions, proving conclusively that Jesus Christ is God. Download PDF notes: https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/bethesdashalom/3._Doctrine_of_the_Trinity.pdf
Part 2 As one traces the history of the beginnings of Jehovah's Witnesses, two names are indispensable to the formation and development of this cult: Charles Taze Russell and his successor, Joseph Franklin Rutherford. In the 1830s, a Baptist minister from New York by the name of William Miller began sharing his new-found belief, that Jesus Christ was going to return around the year 1843. This belief began to gain momentum across denominations, and by 1840 it had become a nationwide campaign. This was the birth of what became known as Adventism and it was from this influence that the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society would emerge. In this teaching, we examine the history of the Watch Tower cult from its beginnings until the present day. We review some of its teachings that have changed during this period and critique its peculiar version of the Bible, the New World Translation. Kingdom Hall TribunalIn 8 parts, based on the works of Bardot1990. Listen to the ► Podcast at ExplicitNovels.Eldon Kittridge gathered his family that Thursday night to attend a Ministry School meeting at his local Kingdom Hall. During that meeting, various members of the congregation prepared and delivered sermons based upon the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society’s interpretation of scripture. Male members stood at the podium unassisted to expound upon Watchtower doctrine. Younger males were groomed by reading directly from the Bible. More experienced males used intricate and often complicated logical stretches to drive their points home. Jehovah’s witnesses practice a rationalistic religion.Female members did not address the congregation standing at the podium. Rather, two or more females took the stage to demonstrate various persuasion techniques. One female would pretend to be a random homeowner in the field. The other female would demonstrate how to explain JW eschatology and or, how to handle various doctrinal objections.Men always ran the meetings. These men were called ‘elders’. Typically, they were the more experienced Christians in the group, it being their job to 'shepherd the flock’. These men strove to set a fine moral and spiritual example for the congregants. Too, they were tasked with keeping the congregation clean of sin.Eldon Kittridge was an elder. On this particular Thursday, Eldon was in charge of the Service Meeting. He gave a fifteen-minute talk. He also was in charge of introducing the other speakers. Typically, these consisted of other elders and deacons working their way up through the church hierarchy. As a young man, before his ex-communication James was a critical cog in this hierarchy. He had congregational privileges that included giving talks, passing microphones around during Bible discussions and proselytizing.James’ sudden ex-communication stained his family’s reputation in the congregation. Whereas, at one time the Kittridge family was held as a model of Christian values, now the family harbored an unrepentant sinner.Eldon Kittridge was torn about this loss of face. Eldon did not grow up in 'the Truth’. He was a convert. Eldon’s wife Abby grew up as one of Jehovah’s witnesses, but left the fellowship just months before meeting Eldon. Both of them were now fervent adherents to the faith. James’ sin was a slap in the face. Technically, he was a grown man now, even though he was still a high school student. Eldon Kittridge could set a fine congregational example by emancipating James. This would be viewed by the congregation as appropriate discipline, and necessary to bring James back into the fold. James knew that he was being considered for emancipation, a nice way of saying he might get kicked out of the house.James did not attend Kingdom Hall that night. Fanny did. She sat through the meeting in moral horror, knowing that she, too, existed in the midst of great mortal sin. Fanny bore the weight of guilt, believing that her brother were incestuously fornicating. It was a case so shocking that, even as a participant, Fanny was taken aback. The siblings had not been intimate since the prior Sunday, which left Fanny both hurt and perplexed. She’d tried everything to bring James back to his penile worship between her thighs. Nothing seemed to work. As the meeting droned on and on, Fanny shuffled in her seat. Her panties were wet. She was ashamed of her wetness in this holy place.Fanny looked over at her mother Abby. Abby Kittridge locked onto each speaker with a laser-like focus. Every word spoken from the podium came straight from Jehovah’s organization and, as such, was worthy of her strict attention. Abby Kittridge was as hardcore a disciple as there was. If the Society said it, she believed it, and that settled it. Periodic changes in their doctrinal stance didn’t bother her; New Light was God’s method of advancing truth. Old Light was God’s method of weeding out malingerers.Abby Kittridge was no malingerer. The meeting adjourned around nine thirty p.m. Various families got up to socialize. Absences were noted and asked after.(No one asked about James. He was dis-fellowshipped.)Of the fellowshipped, the time taken to renew the bonds of family and friendship is often noted as the best thing about Jehovah’s witnesses. Eldon Kittridge and the other elders made it their business to connect with as many congregants as possible. On the ride home Abby and Eldon interrogated their children about major points of the meeting. Abby made sure that her children were properly indoctrinated. Each meeting, to Abby, was a spiritual feast of information, none of which could be wasted or taken for granted. If the truth is told, just as Fanny’s panties were wet with lust for her brother during the meeting, Abby’s panties were wet with spiritual lust afterward. There were no Thursday night meetings where Abby’s middle-aged libido did not require her husband’s attention. She and Eldon exercised their marital due on each such occasion.Upon arriving home, the Kittridge parents asked after the younger children’s homework, though homework was a secondary consideration to meeting attendance. Fanny and James could and should have completed their homework on a non-meeting night. Neither of their parents could have helped much. The youngsters bathed and dressed for bed. Fanny cleaned the kitchen. Eldon Kittridge checked James’ room and found him languidly searching the Internet.“Brother Morgan gave a fine talk tonight. You should have been there,” he said.Bob Morgan was a close friend of James’, that is, until James 'left the Truth’. They hadn’t spoken since. Eldon Kittridge’s comment constituted a reproach. James nodded his head in acknowledgement.By eleven p.m. the younger Kittridge children were in bed. Abby Kittridge checked her refrigerator for breakfast supplies. Eldon checked to see that all the doors were locked. Fanny retreated to her downstairs bedroom. The family’s natural Thursday rhythms were intact.Eldon Kittridge climbed the stairs to his second floor bedroom. He closed the bedroom door behind him, turned, and found his wife standing there in her see-thru negligee. At the age of forty-seven, Abigail Kittridge was still fine. Four children had exited her womb; Abby retained a goodly number of her youthful assets. Her breasts stood nicely. Yes, she was a little thicker around her mid-section and some side bacon, but she could still look down between her tits and see her pubic mound. Her skin was a nice shade of cocoa. Her waist dimpled nicely before spreading into a dowager black woman’s ass. There was no sag in her cheeks or chin, nor was there any cottage cheese pitting in her behind. She stood in the midst of her bedroom, almost naked, posing for her husband. They fucked every Thursday, Sunday and Tuesday without fail, and had done so for the past twenty-three years.Eldon Kittridge had seen this woman fully naked on thousands of occasions. The vision of her cunt no longer aroused him. He still looked forward to fucking her. Abby crawled into bed while Eldon doffed his clothing. Her negligee remained in place; she preferred to have him take it off her.In bed together, they did not kiss or fondle. They were far past these pedestrian pursuits. Instead, they lay side-by-side, each using one hand to masturbate the other. Abby jacked Eldon erect; Eldon fingered Abby wet. Neither option took very long. With his phallus only partially turgid, Eldon mounted his wife in missionary. She directed his pliable phallus into her port. Starting slowly, Eldon’s phallus firmed up as they went. Abby always looked forward to this initial stiffening. Once they got started, Eldon was very longwinded. He regularly fucked her through any number of orgasms. Abby wasn’t shy about expressing herself sexually. When she really got going, she would often slip and verbalize vulgar expletives of joy.Missionary sex comprised the bulk of their repertoire. Eldon licked Abby’s tits and cunt from time to time. Abby never sucked his dick. Nor was anal sex an option. They followed the unspoken rules of Christian sexual behavior. What Would Jesus Do? Abby’s devolution into scatology while cumming was as far as they delved into freakiness. Once, she’d even uttered the phrase “Fuck me!” Eldon chastened her immediately. That type of talk smacked of the world.Tonight, Eldon’s uncircumcised phallus lengthened as it hardened. Abby always looked forward to this phenomenon. He started out at one thickness, improving under the impetus of her cunt until he was exponentially thicker. Abby began to groan in conjunction with his endless thrusts.“Oh! Oh! Oh! Ah! Uh! Oh! Shit!”Her groans amplified in intensity and loudness as Eldon worked himself into a lather. He knew the clasp and the slide of his wife’s Cunt well. He knew that it worked best after a spiritual reckoning at the Kingdom Hall. This was “old” cunt. Eldon was never in danger of capitulating before her wiles. Rather, he counted her orgasms, actively seeking amplification, and ready to inseminate her at any moment on his own terms. For years after the birth of their last child, Abby Kittridge relied upon birth control. But she’d abandoned those artificial methods of late, even though she was still capable of pregnancy.Tonight, Eldon's strident thrusting tippled her sensual triggers early on. She climaxed loudly twice. Abby Kittridge was climbing Jacob’s Ladder to a third orgasm when she sensed an anomaly in the Force. There was a low, thumping noise, almost imperceptible, driving in the background. At first she thought it was the sound of her headboard bouncing against the wall. She slowed her pelvic gyrations. The sound persisted abnormally before quieting.Abby and Eldon went back to work. Gradually, the low, thumping hum returned, continuing until just after Abby and Eldon quieted again. She looked at her husband. He’d heard the sound, too. Parents have antennae for unnatural, late night sounds in their home. Inasmuch as the sound died out, Eldon continued the task at hand, that is, stroking a hot piece of cunt.On five separate occasions the low, thumping sound came, out of rhythm with the couple’s efforts. Each time they sought to identify it, the sound disappeared. Finally, Eldon withdrew his phallus from its place of honor. He threw on his bathrobe and stepped to his bedroom door, intending to seek the source of the sound. Slowly, he turned the doorknob and stepped into the hallway. Pausing, he heard nothing. He waited. The house was silent.Eldon retreated to his bedroom. He stepped of his bathrobe. Abby would see that his tumescence remained. He mounted her again, but before they could pick up where they left off, the low, thumping sound returned.Aggravated, Eldon clambered from the bed and eased back out into the hall. Nothing. This time he waited, suspecting he knew the source. James was masturbating in bed.Normally, a father with an eighteen-year old son concedes that his boy masturbates. All boys do it. Eldon himself had been a ruthless masturbator as a teen.As an elder, however, Eldon Kittridge had to consider the spiritual cleanliness of his home. James, already disfellowshipped for sexual immorality, was on thin ice anyway. Eldon put his ear to James’ bedroom door. Initially, he heard nothing. Slowly the thumping noise returned.Eldon turned the knob slowly so as not to be detected. James’ door was locked. The room had one of those Spam key locks. Eldon reached up to get the key from the doorframe. Even more slowly than before, Eldon unlocked the door. He hoped to catch his son in the act, embarrass him and add this incident as another straw for the camel’s back.Bursting suddenly into James’ room, Eldon was astounded to find his daughter Fanny, ass naked, mounted atop his son James. They were fornicating.Eldon’s sudden entrance caused the naked siblings to explode in an effort to dive under the covers. This effort was largely wasted. Grown people know sexual activity when they see it. Eldon was shocked speechless. He didn’t need a second look This was not masturbation. This was sin, the likes of which he’d never considered possible.Fanny burst into tears.Abby Kittridge now joined Eldon Kittridge standing shocked in James Kittridge’s doorway. Fanny’s tears became an outright wail. She and James were cold busted.James and Fanny Got Busted.Eldon Kittridge took his wife into his arms. She was distraught. Slowly, the two of them stepped away from James’ doorway, closing the door behind them. Eldon suppressed the urge to kill both his eldest children. Instead, he deterred Abby’s urge to do the same. They waited.Fanny burst from James’ bedroom, fully clothed now. She raced past her parents down the stairs, intending to hide in her room.“Hold it, young lady,” came Eldon’s stentorian voice.Fanny expected this. She paused at the foot of the stairs without turning to face her parents. The family was in a moment of crisis. Hiding in her room was not going to erase her sin.James didn’t wait to be called. He trudged to his doorway in his underwear, knowing that recriminations and consequences (all bad) were imminent.Eldon led his wife and the incestuous James downstairs to the dining room table with a heavy heart. Abby Kittridge’s measured breathing bespoke her rage. Fanny continued to cry. James just looked downward, unable to brook his parent’s gaze.“How long has this been going on?” Eldon Kittridge demanded. It was not a question. It was an accusation.Fanny began to gag. James didn’t reply.“How long has this been going on!” Eldon Kittridge reiterated brusquely.“A week or two,” James mumbled.Several issues were in play here. Firstly, the Kittridges now harbored two sinners, not just one, in their home. Of these, one was newly initiated into the genre. Fanny was still a golden member of the congregation, entitled to a hearing in lieu of her statement of repentance and, it must be said, the presumption of innocence. The other sinner had proven that he was not on the path to restoration. Worse, he’d inveigled a formerly pristine member of their family into his nefarious web of sexual filth. It was this last sin that put James most at risk. By Jehovah’s witness doctrine, Fanny could still be redeemed. James, already dis-fellowshipped, stood in need of further, harsher discipline.“Fanny, you’re aware of the scriptural prohibition against pre-marital sex. And yet you committed this act anyway. Can you tell us how this happened?” Eldon sternly inquired.Eldon Kittridge was not in dad mode now. In dad mode he might want to physically attack the man who’d imperiled his daughter’s hopes for eternal life in God’s New System of things. (Jehovah’s witnesses believe in a future paradise on Earth under a heavenly government). Eldon might want to curse and fight. Eldon was operating in elder mode now. By that standard he had to view the situation dispassionately. Fanny would have to be brought up before a council of elders. James was entirely Eldon’s problem.Fanny could not answer her father. She existed in terror and shame. Her Cunt’s trenchant needs had led her astray.Eldon Kittridge quickly realized that he would get nothing from his daughter that night. She was incapable of dealing with her mortal sin in the moment. He’d known immediately what needed to be done with James.“Fanny, go get in the bed. We’ll deal with you tomorrow,” he announced.Fanny bolted the table, disappearing down the hall, into her room.Eldon and Abby Kittridge stayed behind with James. Eldon allowed an uncomfortable silence to settle over the proceedings. He had something to say, something that all of them knew was coming.“James. You’re a grown man now. We have stood by you even though other members of the congregation have advised us otherwise. We have fed and clothed you. We’ve put a roof over your head. And this is how you’ve repaid us? By bringing your; your Filth into your own family? It’s one thing to fornicate with worldly girls. You’ve brought this disease into My home! You’ve inveigled your own sister into mortal sin! She may get dis-fellowshipped because of you! Who’s next? Little Jill; or Jayce?Eldon Kittridge allowed his rage to build and double."James, I cannot allow this to continue. You will have to leave my home. You will have to find your own way in the world that you have chosen. Do you understand me?”James understood. He’d expected this. He didn’t expect what came next.“Gather your things. It’s time for you to leave.”James was taken aback.“Now?” he asked incredulously.“Yes. Now.”It was one o'clock in the morning.“Where am I supposed to go at this hour?”“That’s your problem, James. Don’t let the sunrise find you here. I’ll throw your things into the street.”“Dad! GO!”James’ Dilemma.Tony Gilbert hadn’t had a decent piece of cunt in several days. His last sexual encounter (with long-time girlfriend Margaret Cameron) consisted of more-of-the-same. Of late their sex had become marital, that is, on schedule and without variety. Tony was well acquainted with Margaret’s primary sexual orifices by now. Both of those holes soaked in gallons of his seed.Like his friends, Tony had some cunt on the side, indeed, at one point Margaret had been a member of Tony’s other-snatch harem. Now, as his regular girlfriend, Tony took every opportunity to step out on her. In this wise he was little different than his contemporaries. Tony’s seraglio consisted of Margaret, Chiya Sakai, Rosanne Peraino, Donna Dennison and GeorgeAnn Vachetto. Occasionally, Tony hooked up with Dana Chandler and Jonna Kindler, though these latter trysts tended to be few and far between. Both those girls had seraglios of their own.Margaret knew Tony was cheating. She did her best to drain him, leaving him without the time and/or energy for othersnatch. At the same time, Margaret tended to her duties as a part of Delphia’s crew. She fucked other boys at Delphia’s behest. Margaret didn’t consider this behavior to be “cheating”. To her, this behavior was merely paying dues for membership in the club.On the Thursday in question, Margaret, Chiya and Delphia triple-teamed Kurt Kuhlmann in the school auditorium. Delphia bet both her friends that they couldn’t make Kurt cum. She offered a twenty to the girl that managed it. None of them did.Delphia assured her two friends that she would successfully take Kurt away from his girlfriend Denise. She bet a twenty on that, too. Margaret didn’t say anything, but she doubted it. She’d seen Kurt and D
If you've lived in the US for long, you've probably had members of the Jehovah's Witnesses come to your door at some point. How much do you know about them and what they believe? And what does their continued existence tell us about the world and the church today? Similar to the Mormons in that they are a cult formed in the wake of the Second Great Awakening, the Jehovah's Witnesses started in 1870. Today, they are mostly known for their door-to-door witnessing and their booklets and other publications distributed by the “Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania”, the parent organization of most Jehovah's Witness denominational ministries. In this episode, we want to talk about Jehovah's Witnesses, what they believe, and why they have continued to have some measure of success in the world. Joining us for this episode is Je'quan Underwood, a member of our church who has spent a fair bit of time talking to and witnessing to Jehovah's Witnesses. Similar to Mormons, it's easy to dismiss their claims as crazy, but the simple truth is that false religions exist because people are seeking to live in the world and to deal with their own sin and the sin of others without accepting the truth about Jesus Christ, Godhood, and the way of salvation. And while there are specific things that are useful to point out if you talk to a Jehovah's Witness, there is no magic phrase or piece of information that you can give them to cause them to turn away from their false religion. The issue is spiritual, not intellectual. But at the same time, it's useful to understand what they say they believe as false religions in each age of the church push against specific doctrines that offend the mind and heart of man. At 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 Jehovah's Witnesses are told that reading the Bible makes them "fully competent, completely equipped for every good work." It raises a question: If Jehovah provided a perfect book, claiming it was all they ever needed for a relationship with him, why did he create the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society? Why have book carts? Was Jehovah kidding when he had that put in the Bible? Is there a reason Watchtower & Awake magazine are piling up in laundromats? 182 JW Escape! [Part 2] Former Jehovah's Witness Elaine Bales shares her story with James WalkerJehovah's Witnesses are presently experiencing a tremendous institutional and public relations crisis as never before in the history of their organization. Many members have grown tired of the fear, intimidation, and unceasing, impossible demands of trying to earn favor with the wrathful and implacable god in whom they profess to believe. Here on Part Two of James Walker's conversation with former Jehovah's Witness Elaine Bales, you will hear of the crisis facing the organization and what you can do to be a compassionate ambassador for Christ if ever you had the opportunity to engage them about what they believe. Most of all, Elaine reminds us that members of Jehovah's Witnesses are not the enemy. They know little or nothing about the love of Christ and the person to whom God brings to your doorstep might be just in a similar position as Elaine was decades ago. Your seed of kindness to them could go a long way.Elaine Bales was born a JW kid, Elaine came to believe she could never do enough. She finally escaped Jehovah's Witnesses after 23 years and struggled for nearly 20 years to find her way. This week and next, President of Watchman Fellowship James K. Walker sits down with Elaine Bales, a former Jehovah's Witness, to discuss her experiences as being a member since childhood, and her difficult escape from it to embrace the real Jesus and His gospel of grace. Our very own Daniel Ray had a recent encounter with two Jehovah's Witnesses at the Dallas/Love Field Airport. On his phone, he pulled up Watchman Fellowship's digital four-page profile on the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society just before approaching their information table. And as Daniel attests, it was an incredibly helpful reminder. And it's something you can do too, should you ever encounter Jehovah's Witnesses in public or at your front door. Instead of walking past a table or slamming the door on them, be ready to give a defense for the hope that is in you. 2 John 1:7-13Rev. Erik Veerman5/7/2023The Truth about DeceptionOur sermon text this morning is 2 John verses 7-13. You can find that on page 1214 In the church Bibles.Last week we considered the first half of this short letter. Even though it's written to the elect Lady, we discussed how John was likely writing to a specific church. Given the letter's emphasis and language, that understanding makes sense.John opens the letter with a warm salutation. It's very focused on truth and love. And it turns out that truth and love are the main themes of the first half. He calls on them to walk in truth and love. Not just truth, alone, and not just love, alone, but both truth and love. God's truth and agape love, which comes from God's unconditional covenant love for his people. And that brings us to verse 7… where John makes a shift to now address a specific situation. False teachers, whom he calls deceivers, had been traveling around spreading false beliefs about Jesus. In these verses, he gives this church guidance about their teaching and what they should do about it.Let's now come to God's Word.StandReading of 2 John 7-13.PrayerA few years ago, a famous Vermeer painting was on display at the High Museum of Art. So, we went to see it. It's named The Girl with a Pearl Earing. It's probably Johannes Vermeer's most famous painting. He painted it in 1665. It's worth something like $100 million dollars. One of the reasons is that there are only 36 known Vermeer paintings in the world. In fact, back in 1937, a new painting was found. They named it Supper at Emmaus. Art critics were amazed. One well known famous expert called it “the masterpiece of Johannes Vermeer.” A famous art society purchased it for a very large sum of money – millions in today's dollars. The interesting thing is that over the next few years, 5 more Vermeer paintings were found. And all of them found by the same person. Han van Meegeren. But it all came crashing down. Van Meegeren had sold one of the paintings to a high-ranking Nazi official. Because of that, the Dutch government arrested him. At which point he confessed that that they were all forgeries. Van Meegeren had duped all the art experts. The paint was authentic to the period. He had perfected the style. He slightly baked the paintings in an oven and rolled them on a roller to make the paintings appear old with cracks. It's known as one the greatest art forgeries in history. In a word, Van Meegeren was a deceiver. The thing is, the paintings looked so real. People swore that they were authentic. When you compared the brush strokes, the colors, the style, the lighting and shadows on the painted faces, the background, and the paper, it all looked authentic, but it was a great deception. And that is the warning that the apostle John is giving this church. There were teachers who claimed to be Christians. They sounded good, looked good, and had an aura of authenticity. In fact, many of the words they spoke were probably true. But in the end, they were merely deceivers peddling false teaching…. Or to use John's words, their “wicked works.” verse 11.And I would say, this is still very relevant to us today. Every generation, false teachers arise who claim to be teaching truths about Jesus or the Bible or Christianity, yet the heart of their teaching is a false Gospel. These verses answer two questions for us:1. How do we determine when someone's teaching is true or false? And just to be sure, John is not talking about secondary matters. No, John is referring to essential matters. How do we evaluate when someone's teaching undermines the heart of Christianity? That's the first question.2. The second question is, how should we relate to these false teachers? You see, John doesn't just give them a warning about false teaching, but he also gives them clear guidance. So, what should they do? That's the second question these verses answer. To give us some organization this morning, we'll take those questions in that order. First, how do we identify false teaching? And second, how should we deal with false teachers?Identifying False TeachingThe reason John had just emphasized walking in truth and love is because these teachers were not walking in truth and love. They claimed to be a part of the church, but their teaching contradicted their claim. So, how should we determine whether someone's teaching strikes at the heart of Christianity? That's what we are talking about: a perversion of the central truths of Christianity. Beliefs that invalidate the teaching and the teacher. Notice the words that John uses to describe them at the end of verse 7. They are deceivers and antichrists. In fact, those words are not plural. He writes, “such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.” He's basically calling them the devil. He's not saying there's just one deceiver, he's already said there are many. Rather, their deception originates from the great enemy of the faith. They are each the anti-Christ. He could not use a stronger word to describe them. That word, in fact summarizes their false teaching: anti-Christ. Opposed to Christ. Their teaching undermines the Christian faith – Christ himself. This is the main problem with their teaching.Look down at verse 7. It says, “many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh.” Right there, he hones in on exactly the problem. These teachers do not confess that Jesus is the Christ. In other words, they do not believe that the man Jesus is the promised Messiah. Oh, they believed in Jesus, the man. They believed he was a good teacher. After all, they identified themselves as part of the church. But they did not believe in Jesus' deity. We talked a little bit about this in 1 John. At the time, Gnosticism was on the rise. That was a human philosophy that focused on higher spirituality. To a gnostic, all matter was evil, which included our bodies. For that reason, they did not believe that Jesus was the Christ in the flesh. How could God become something evil – flesh and blood. That was their line of thinking. Therefore, they rejected Jesus as the promised Messiah. They rejected the incarnation, God becoming flesh. They did not believe that Jesus was the son of God in the flesh.Let's go back up to verse 3. In the salutation, John gave a preview of this central issue. Notice in that verse 3 blessing, he emphasizes that Jesus is the Christ and that he is God the Father's Son. That's very intentional because the truth and love of God centers around Jesus as the Son of God - God in the flesh. If you take that part away, you strip the Gospel of its power. In other words, redemption from sin requires Jesus' fullness as God. In order for the death of Jesus on the cross to be effective as a payment for sin, Jesus needed to be fully and truly God. He also needed to be fully and truly man. Being the mediator between God and man for our sin requires a God man. Able to atone for us as a perfectly righteous man, and able pay the depth of the penalty for sin, as God himself. That is the heart of the Gospel.Notice in verse 9… that is the teaching of Christ himself. It says, “Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God.” Jesus himself testified over and over that he was God's son, in the flesh. He demonstrated that. It's why the religious leaders hated him. Jesus claimed to be God, claimed to be the Christ. Therefore, to them, he was a blasphemer and deserved death.Let me put it this way, when someone claims to be teaching the truth of God, but denies or twists an essential element of the Gospel, that teaching is not just false in that one area, rather the whole Gospel is undermined.Let's set aside forged paintings. Let me give you a real example. You've probably never heard of Charles Taze Russell. He grew up in the 1850s and 60s in a Presbyterian church in Pennsylvania. As a teenager, he was described as loving the Bible. When he was 18, he started a Bible study with his father. But soon thereafter, Charles Russell began questioning central tenants of the Christian faith, including questioning the validity of the Trinity – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He still considered himself to be a Christian, but he denied that the Holy Spirit was God and he denied that Jesus was God in human flesh. To be sure, he believed in Jesus the man – a special created man, at that, just not Jesus' divine nature. Russel began teaching these things. He also started a magazine and an association called The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Maybe you've heard of that. These false teachings began to spread rapidly. By the 1880s, 16 million copies of his literature had been published. He became very well known all throughout the eastern and northeastern United States. The movement grew. Even after Russell's death, his disciples and other false teachers continued on. In 1931, The Watchtower Society was renamed the Jehovah's Witnesses. It continues today with about 8 million adherents. They have a presence in Tucker. The teachings of the Jehovah's Witnesses are the modern-day parallel to the deceivers in John's day. They claim to have the truth, but they do not believe that Jesus is the incarnate eternal Son of God. Rather, they believe Jesus is a created being with special powers given but not the eternal God. For that reason, as John puts it, “they do not have God.” They are deceivers. Their works are wicked. That is strong language! That's because it is anti-Christ, as John says. The apostle Paul said it this way in Galatians 1, “if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.” He repeated that twice in Galatians 1.The Jehovah's Witnesses are just one example today. How can these deceivers be identified? The answer is if any part of their teaching undermines the person or work of Christ. • That would include denying either Jesus as truly God or truly man. • A false teacher would also include anyone who denies the need for the atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross• …or who denies the bodily resurrection of Jesus • …or who denies that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation.• it would also include any kind of denial of the Trinity.Any one of those denials, just one, would go against the teaching of Jesus himself and the apostles as recorded in the Scriptures. And what does the apostle John warn? He writes, “watch yourselves,” verse 8, “so that you may not lose what we have worked for.” They were in a fragile time. The church was in the first few decades of growth. John was the last living disciple of Jesus. And the New Testament was not yet available. In other words, this antichrist teaching threatened to unravel the work which had begun. That is what John is referring to. These false teachers, often unknowingly, were being used by the devil to attack the church. Besides the content of their teaching being heresy, it threatened the unity and spread of the church, which they had worked for.So, this was a matter of utmost importance. In summary: These teachers were denying core beliefs about Jesus and true faith in him, and they therefore threatened the church.Dealing with False TeachersAnd the natural next question is this: what should they do about it?That is the second question this morning. How should they, how should we, deal with these false teachers?Well, John answers that. But before considering what he says, a little context would be helpful. In that time, it was very common for pastors to travel around to different congregations in their region. Small churches didn't have the means to have full-time pastors. These churches were scattered around in villages and towns. Remember, this was before the New Testament was complete. They had some New Testament letters and Gospel accounts but it was limited. At that time, the teaching of Jesus and the apostles was passed down orally. Apostles like John, Peter, and Paul taught their disciples, who would then teach the people. In other words, there were more congregations than there were trained pastors and elders. So, they shared. It was a common thing for a teacher to come into town. The church was expected to greet them and provide for their needs. And by the way, that happens today all over the world. Especially in rural settings. In fact, the seminary that I went to, RTS, has a campus in Jackson, Mississippi. Jackson is a decent size town, but when you get outside the city, it becomes very rural very fast. It's not like Atlanta. And one of the ways that the seminary supports the smaller churches in the area is to send their divinity students to preach. It both helps the small churches and gives the students experience. So, there's nothing wrong with the idea of preachers or teachers travelling around. The issue was the content of their teaching. That background helps us understand verse 10. It says, “If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting.” They should not be supporting these travelling false teachers. The word “house” could either be hosting them (not giving them a place to stay), or it could be referring to the houses where they worshipped. Whatever the case, the church was not to accommodate them. Don't help them. Don't even greet them with the customary greeting as a brother. Doing either would be supporting their deception. Instead, they were to make a very clear statement that these teachers were not teaching the truth about Jesus nor his Gospel. Now, maybe you're thinking, “ok, but how is that loving? After all, John just said to walk in truth and love. But now he's telling them to not do loving things!” That's a legitimate question. I think the answer is, it would be unloving to receive them. By doing so would cause confusion among the believers. Remember, these were false teachers travelling around. He's not talking about your regular person on the street who is not a Christian, or who may have beliefs contrary to true faith. For them, the call would be to sit down and teach the truth of the Gospel… to reveal Jesus in the fulness of who he is and in the Gospel of grace. But for the teachers, they were propagating false beliefs. In the book of James, chapter 3, it says, “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.” That is a humbling and dauting reality for any teacher of God's Word and truth.Perhaps the Holy Spirit would use the rejection to shake them. To reveal to them their wicked words that they may come to know the true truth of Christ. But the main purpose in rejecting these deceivers is to protect and love the church and clearly call out their deception. What would that look like today?Well, here's one example. Maybe you've seen the two Jehovah's Witnesses women who are often on Main Street. They are there a couple of times per month. Sometimes right outside our office. If I were to invite them in and let them use our office as a base of operations, that would be a problem. In other words, if we support them in any way, we are participating in their false teaching. Now, that's different than wanting to talk to them and open up God's Word and share the truth in a loving way.Another example would be platforming false teachers. That could be inviting a false teacher to teach or preach. It could be endorsing them, or encouraging people to read their books or listen to their podcasts and sermons. We should not do those things. Instead, we should give clear guidance on what is faithful and true versus unfaithful and false. In fact, over the last few months, our youth group has been studying just that. They've been guided through false teaching in the broader American church. That has included a comparison and a contrast of faithful Biblical teaching verses teaching that has gravely strayed from the truth. The thing is, to go back where we started, false teaching can look and sound authentic. It can be packaged in the latest cultural words and ideas that may come across as winsome and relevant and good, but which merely lead people astray.Do not receive them or greet them or platform them. Call out their wicked works.ConclusionBeloved, instead, “abide in the teaching of Christ,” end of verse 9. Believe in Jesus as the “Son of the Father,” verse 3. Confess that “Jesus Christ has come in the flesh,” verse 7.Why?• Because as the author of Hebrews put it, “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.”• As we learn in Colossians 1, “For…all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.” And then it says this: “For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.”• As John writes in his Gospel. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” And “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us”• As Jesus himself declared, “I and the Father are one.”• As the Angel declared in Luke 1 at Jesus birth, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord”• As the Lord himself revealed in Revelation 1 “I am the Alpha and the Omega… who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”• Really, all of the book of Revelation declares that Jesus is reigning as Lord. Seated on the throne. The heavenly hosts declared day and night, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” He is the great victor. The multitude rejoiced over the lamb who was slain but who is now reigning. They sang, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.” On his heavenly robe and thigh, written “King of kings and Lord of Lords”This is who we worship! Christ Jesus, the eternal God who has come to us in the flesh. As the apostle Paul writes in 1 Tim 2, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” He is our hope, our mediator, he has accomplished in his death as God and man, redemption.Beloved, May we lay hold of the precious truth of our Savior. May we reject anything that maligns him or twists the truth about him or his Gospel. Instead, may we believe and confess him in truth and love. Amen

On this episode of Rightly Dividing, we are concluding our current series comparing well-known and popular religious movements with the doctrines and teachings of biblical Christianity, rightly divided and dispensationally correct. Journey with us to the founding of the Jehovah's Witnesses group, formed in the shadow of the ‘Great Disappointment' of 1844. It is here that a young Charles Taze Russell, spellbound under the false teachings of William Miller, waits in vain for the end of the world to occur on October 22, 1844. But young Charles remains upbeat and optimistic, trudging ever onward to create his own religion movement today known as the Jehovah's Witnesses. On this episode of Rightly Dividing, we show you more than you ever wanted to know about the JW's, their teachings, their literature, and their accuracy on the volume of prophecies they've made over the years. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society was founded in 1886 and quickly became the vehicle through which the “Millennial Dawn” movement began distributing their views to others. The group was known as the “Russellites” until 1931 when, due to a split in the organization, it was renamed the Jehovah's Witnesses. The group from which it split became known as the “Bible students.” So the question comes up, are the doctrines and teachings of Jehovah's Witness compatible with biblical Christianity?

What would you say to a skeptic who asks you to describe the differences between your faith and the faith of a Muslim or a Hindu? Would you be able to explain the basic differences between your faith and that of a Mormon or Jehovah's Witness who knocks at your door? In our ever-increasingly religiously diverse and pluralistic society, we cannot afford to ignore the ideas, beliefs, and practices surrounding us. But we also do not need to become scholars in comparative religions to be able to give a defense for the hope that is in us as Christians to those who believe differently than we do. On part two of our conversation about religious pluralism, Mama Bear Apologetics world religions specialist Lindsey Medenwaldt gives us more practical advice about how to engage with those of other faiths. Increasingly our neighborhoods, schools, workplace, and culture at large have become much more religiously and ethnically diverse. We also have instantaneous access to a plethora of information about other religions through the internet and social media. We meet all kinds of people who accept a wide variety of different beliefs and practices related to God. These present significant challenges to the exclusivity of Jesus being the only way to the Father. What is the difference between religious diversity and religious plurality? Do all paths lead to God or is there finally only one way, as Jesus proclaimed? What are we to make of the multiplicity of other religions by which we are surrounded? How do we best equip ourselves as Christians to understand the times and ideas in which we live? How do we reach out to our religious non-Christian neighbors? On the next two episodes of Apologetics Profile we offer some down-to-earth advice from a "Mama Bear" about how we can effectively engage our non-Christian religious friends and neighbors without having to become an expert in comparative religious studies! World religion specialist Lindsey Medenwaldt shares with us her wisdom and experience and offers some great insights you can begin applying immediately to your conversations with people of other faiths.Lindsey Medenwaldt is Director of Ministry Operations at Mama Bear Apologetics, and she is their resident worldview and world religion specialist. On part two president of Watchman Fellowship, James Walker, concludes his keynote on the nature of God and the Trinity presented at the Witness Now for Jesus Ex-Jehovah's Witness conference. We examine the history behind some of the classic heretical teachings that confronted the early Christianity, how they reappear in our time and how you can recognize them. We hope these insights will give you practical and edifying truths as you give a defense for the hope that is in you to friends, family, and loved ones who don't know Jesus. As we learned last week, the doctrine of God as Three-in-One, the Trinity, is absolutely central to our faith. Any deviation from understanding this teaching inevitably results in false doctrines and heresy. Historical councils of the Church throughout history have rigorously addressed the aberrant views of the Trinity, such as the Council of Nicea (325 A.D.) and the Council of Chalcedon (451 A.D.). Yet despite these efforts, heretical doctrines regarding the nature of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit resurface in non-Christian religions and cults. How might you address objections to God as Three-in-One? Are you prepared to give a defense of the Trinity? What would you say to a Mormon who might object that the word "Trinity" is not found in the Bible, or a Muslim who says it is blasphemy to refer to God as three distinct Persons? What might you say to someone who argues Jesus is not God? Or that only the Father is God? How might you answer someone who would claim God is not really three Persons, but just appears to us in three different modes?James Walker is a former fourth-generation Mormon who is currently president of Watchman Fellowship, an evangelical apologetics ministry focused on interfaith evangelism. Was Jesus the creator of all things or was He actually a created being? Creator or creature? God with us or the angel Michael with us? These are foundational questions for Jehovah's Witnesses and other controversial religions. This two-part episode of Apologetics Profile features Watchman Fellowship president, James Walker, sharing a keynote message given at the Witness Now for Jesus Conference of former Jehovah's Witnesses. This message provides helpful reminders and insights about the uniqueness and wonder of seeing God as One God and as three distinct Persons. The doctrine of the Trinity can be difficult to wrap our minds around, but it is absolutely foundational for our faith. No matter where you are in your walk with Christ, we hope this presentation will be helpful and edifying to you this Christmas season as you reach out to those who don't know Christ. So come and see! Come and celebrate the incarnate Immanuel, God with us, the Babe lying in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes who is also Creator and Lord of the heavens and earth. On the afternoon of Monday December 31, 2018, the Truth and Transparency Foundation was issued four separate takedown requests with a total of 63 documents. The request came from the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania. It is the third time the Truth and Transparency Foundation has received such a request, this being the first regarding withdrawal of documents not related to Mormonism. All the documents included in the requests are currently hosted on the website of TTF project FaithLeaks, which serves as a site to host confidential documents from religious institutions. The entirety of the documents was published in late April or early May 2018, eight months before the requests. How did FaithLeaks.org respond? #FaithLeaks #WatchTower #Takedown

The Russian Supreme Court recently declared the Jehovah’s Witnesses to be an “extremist” organization. The April 2017 decision has placed the Jehovah’s Witnesses on the same legal footing as terrorist groups such as ISIS and Al Qaeda. Witness publications can no longer be imported or printed domestically, and the organization’s administrative center outside of St. Petersburg has been shut down and its assets liquidated. The court ruling has also had immediate implications for the more than 170,000 members of this Christian minority community in Russia. With their faith now officially classified as extremist, individual Witnesses have faced increasing harassment as they continue to conduct evangelism among their neighbors. The international organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, has appealed the decision to the European Court of Human Rights. In the meantime, the fate of Witnesses in Russia remains uncertain. This talk reconstructs the history of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Russian soil and what led to this court decision. In doing so, Baran considers the implications of the Witnesses’ ban for the state of religious freedom in Russia today. From the lecture titled "How Jehovah's Witnesses Became "Extremists": The Strange State of Religious Freedom in Russia."

On today's edition of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, Hank discusses a USA Today article, "Schoolgirl kidnapped by Boko Haram refuses to convert to Islam, family says." Leah Sharibu was the only Christian among the 110 girls kidnapped on February 19, 2018, and was not released as she refused to deny Christ and convert to Islam. During this discussion, Hank notes the failure of main-stream media to identify as Islamic terrorism, those Muslims who attack "infidels" around the world. Hank also discusses the reliability of the resurrection of Jesus Christ using the acronym F.E.A.T. Also, Hank discusses the Jehovah's Witnesses who teach that the historic Christian Church apostatized, and taught heretical doctrines that were countered by the Charles Taze Russell, the founder of the Jehovah's Witnesses, and their publishing organization, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Hank also answers the following questions: There are many that claim to be Christians, but the Lord said the road is narrow that leads to eternal life. What assurance of salvation do we really have?Who wrote the 119th Psalm? Moses? Also, could you describe the new covenant with Jesus. Are we required to live according to the 119th Psalm? When I hear theologians of high caliber say that God hates sinners, it drives me crazy. I believe God loves everybody. What are your thoughts?Do you think Christians should be celebrating Passover? When Pontius Pilate asked the crowd what to do with Jesus, and they said, "Crucify him," and "His blood be upon us and our children," was that actually a blessing upon them, instead of being a curse?
In the April Broadcast on tv.jw.org, there is a video given by Governing Body member Mark Sanderson at about the 34-minute mark, wherein he relates some encouraging experiences of brothers under persecution in Russia back in the 1950s, showing how Jehovah provided the support they needed to endure. When we become disillusioned with the organization, it is very easy for us to see everything that comes forth from it in a negative light. This can be caused by our own disillusionment, by the sense of betrayal we feel by men in whom we invested the utmost trust. Anger may cause us to lose sight of the many good things that we gained from our association with Jehovah’s Witnesses. On the other hand, when we hear about such positive experiences, we may become confused. We may question our own decision, thinking that there is in fact evidence that Jehovah has blessed the organization. What we have here are two extremes. On the one hand we dismiss all that is good, utterly rejecting the Organization; while on the other hand, we might see these things as proof of God’s blessing and be drawn back into the Organization. When a brother like Mark Sanderson uses examples of Christian faith under persecution (the organization often uses the faithful example of the Earnest Bible students in Nazi Germany who did not call themselves Jehovah’s Witnesses, but were affiliated with the Watchtower Bible and Tract society in New York) he does not do so to build our faith in Jehovah God as the rewarder of individuals who love him (Heb 11:6), but rather to build our faith in the Organization as the one place where such rewards from God are dispensed. We are not expected to watch this video and conclude that this is yet another example of Jehovah helping Christians in any and every denomination who are undergoing persecution for the name of the Christ. Witnesses will be inclined to believe that this type of thing happens only to them. Yet, there are many cases of Christians undergoing persecution around the world, many far worse off than what JWs are experiencing. A simple google search will reveal this. Here is a link to one such video. We can be seduced by such stories and read into them far more than is intended. I think Peter expressed it best when he said about the Gentile Cornelius: “Now I truly understand that God is not partial, 35 but in every nation the man who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. (Acts 10:34, 35) It is not our religious affiliation that counts in the end, but whether or not we fear God and do what is acceptable to him. Sooner or later, that fear (reverent submission) will lead to obedience when those in our church, synagogue, temple, or Kingdom hall ask us to do something that conflicts with what our Father tells us to do.
This article started out as a short piece intended to provide all of you in our online community with some details into our use of donated funds. We have always intended to be transparent about such things, but to be honest, I hate accounting and so I kept pushing this off for other more interesting topics. Nevertheless, the time has come. Then, as I started to write this, it occurred to me that another topic I’d been wanting to write about might dovetail nicely into the discussion of donations. They may seem unrelated, but as I've asked before, please bear with me. Over the past 90 days, this site—Beroean Pickets – JW.org Reviewer—has had over 11,000 users opening 33,000 sessions. There were almost 1,000 page views of the most recent article on the Memorial. Over the same period of time, the Beroean Pickets Archive has been visited by over 5,000 users opening over 10,000 sessions. Of course, numbers are not a measure of God's blessing, but it can be encouraging, as it was to Elijah, to learn that you are not alone. (Romans 11:1-5) As we look back on where we have been, the next logical question is, where are we going? Jehovah’s Witnesses—and members of most other religions, whether Christian or otherwise—cannot conceive of any form of worship being acceptable to God unless made within the framework of some religious group. Such thinking stems from the idea that worship of God is achieved through works, formal practices, or ritualistic procedures. This overlooks the fact that for about half of human existence, the only form of organized religious worship involved the worship of demons. Abel, Enoch, Noah, Job, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob did very nicely on their own, thank you very much. The Greek word most translated as "worship" in English is proskuneó, which means “to kiss the ground when prostrating before a superior”. What this refers to is complete and unconditional obedience. Such a level of obedience should never be granted to sinful men, as they are unworthy of it. Only our Father, Jehovah, merits such worship/obedience. That is why the angel rebuked John when, overcome with awe at what he saw, he performed an inappropriate act of proskuneó: At that I fell down before his feet to worship him. But he tells me: “Be careful! Do not do that! All I am is a fellow slave of you and of your brothers who have the work of witnessing to Jesus. Worship God; for the bearing witness to Jesus is what inspires prophesying.” (Revelation 19:10) There is little from J.F. Rutherford's body of work with which I can agree, but the title of this article is one notable exception. In 1938, "The Judge" launched a new preaching campaign with the theme: “Religion is a snare and a racket. Serve God and Christ the King.” The moment we subscribe to some particular brand of Christianity, we are no longer worshipping God. We must now accept the commands of our religious leaders who claim to speak for God. Who we hate and who we love, who we tolerate and who we eradicate, who we support and who we trample on, is all now determined by men with their own sinful agenda. What we have is the very thing that Satan sold to Eve: Human rule, this time clothed in the robes of piety. In the name of God, man has dominated man to his injury. (Ecclesiastes 8:9) If you want to get away with doing something that is wrong, one successful tactic has proven to be: to condemn the very thing you practice, while extolling the very thing you fail to do. Rutherford condemns religion as "a snare and a racket" while urging people to "serve God and Christ the King". Yet this campaign was launched after he had carefully worked to craft a religion of his very own. In 1931, he created it under the brand name “Jehovah’s Witnesses” by consolidating the Bible Student Associations still affiliated with the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society into a single entity with himself as their leader.[i] Then in 1934,

What is the hierarchical structure of Jehovah's Witnesses? What happens at those meetings in the Kingdom Hall? How do Jehovah's Witnesses view the world around them and how history has unfolded? What does the future hold according to Jehovah's Witnesses? Are you ready to learn "THE TRUTH"? I'll break all of this down for you in this episode. Direct Download Here [expand title="Click Here To Show Transcript"] [00:00:01] There are over eight million Jehovah's Witnesses Jay Dubbs or J-ws worldwide. I wasn't born one was introduced to it around the age of 8 or 9 and would spend the next three decades trying to process what I had unwittingly become involved in ultimately leaving and costing me dearly. This J.W. life is my response to the encouragement I've received to write a book about my life. In my story you're going to learn about this called and why refer to it as such rather than as a religion. You're going to see how I went from suicidal and incredibly anxious to free and happy. Why I put on 50 pounds and how I took it off while my wife and I owe the IRS fifty five thousand dollars and how we paid that off in 18 months. And while that wasn't even the biggest win to come from that time there are lessons to be learned here whether you're in a Colts or you're just your average person living life for the SJ doves out there. I hope you find comfort in knowing that you're not alone and maybe this helps you process your own pain for those who have family that are Jehovah's Witnesses. I hope this gives you a glimpse into what they're both involved in and up against. For those that have no ties I hope this broaden your horizons maybe sheds light on the human experience a little. And if there are any current Jehovah's Witnesses that listen I hope this gives you something you need for wherever you are now in your journey. But in the end I hope you find happiness and peace. [00:01:24] You've been through a lot and you deserve it. I'm not a professional producer. I'm a professional housecleaner. You'll find out why that is. And as well as how it is possible even to save my life later I'm recording this as a podcast as a fitting way of telling my story as it was podcasts and audio books that helped me awaken to the realities of the life I was given as a child and that I tried to live up to for decades including as an adult. [00:01:51] I want to take a minute at the beginning of this to thank everybody that has listened so far. I've had over twelve hundred downloads and that's amazing. I really didn't expect that. I've also had a couple of iTunes reviews and I can't tell you how much that is appreciated. If you enjoy this podcast please leave a positive review on iTunes. It helps with the ranking and the higher the show ranks the more people will find it. My wife and I are doing all we can to promote this but it is hard. I'm not doing this for monetary gain. In fact this cost me each month to keep us posted and online for everyone to access but I know Jehovah's Witnesses though and I want to make it clear that my motives here are pure and not for any personal gain. So if you can leave positive reviews on iTunes please do. If you can share this podcast with others please do. I'm doing this to help people and by doing so you get to help me help others. Again I am not doing this for any monetary gain. I also want you to know that I've appreciated all the messages I've received on my site through sites like Reddit or there's a forum I'm a member of it's called Jehovah's Witness dot com. That's my jam. That's where I started all this in the first place. The first quote apostate web site I ever went on was Jehovah's Witness dot com and that message board helped me a lot. [00:03:19] So I received good messages there I've received messages on Instagram Twitter just all the places. It means a lot to me that people want to share this with me and you know whether it's telling me that they appreciate my story or whether they share some of their own story. [00:03:37] You know I think it's kind of awesome that people want to share. So here's what I'm going to do. I'd like to invite anyone that has questions or wants to tell their story to email me at this. J w life at gmail dot com. Again that's this. J. W life at gmail dot com. You can also go to my Web site at the bottom right of the home page or probably either page. There's a button that shows the email address. If you can't remember this J.W. life at gmail dot com for some reason. If I get enough questions and stories maybe I'll save them up and do an episode entirely devoted to answering your questions. Or [00:04:22] I'd love to tell other people's stories as well if I could do that at the end. [00:04:28] And finally I know I had originally said that I'd put some pictures and such up on my web site and I didn't do that at first because I didn't have time. But upon further review I think I'm going to have to decline that offer with good intention but I have noticed that I have limited photos. Well first of all I do have limited photos that I received before my shining. It's not like I can go ask for more pictures and some of the photographs I have had family members in them and it's not something I'm comfortable doing in relationship to this show to put pictures up like that. I just don't really feel right about it. There is also some issues that I played around with and there were some issues with formatting them for my site. So for now I'm just going to focus on the podcast itself. Getting the message out there and give people like you opportunity to participate by asking questions or sharing your story if you like. But for now I'm just going to back off the possibility of images. All right. Now this next part of the story really overwhelmed me when I was making notes for it last week so overwhelmed me emotionally because I was reliving some ugly parts of my life growing up at home. But this week I want to take you into the beliefs that Jehovah's Witnesses have and how my life as a witness grew out of it and the path that it took. [00:05:56] There was just so much to discuss that this is going to have to be broken up into at least two episodes maybe three depending on how it breaks out. I spent hours just organizing my notes alone on this and trying to make it understandable to those who haven't been there. So what do you know about Jehovah's Witnesses and what they believe. The first thing that usually comes to mind is there those weird people that don't celebrate anything. And obviously you're correct. You've already discussed that or maybe you know that they believe only 144 thousand of them are going to go to heaven. So you know what's that mean for everybody else. I've always heard that question if only 144 thousand go to heaven. Where is everybody else going to go. Kind of limits the playing field if you have the dichotomy of an afterlife that consists of either heaven or hell and you are right. They only believe that one hundred forty four thousand go to heaven. But you know maybe the only thing that you know of Jehovah's Witnesses are those nice people that come to your door and wake you up on a Saturday morning and again you'd be right. However you'd know so little about what Jehovah's Witnesses really teach. Most people really have no clue. There's a lot of information online and on different podcasts and programs about Scientology or Mormons. But there's really not a lot about what Jehovah's Witnesses are really teaching what really goes on in their culture. I have a feeling that you're going to learn some things in this episode that you never knew unless you were at one time one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Again though I'm going to try to approach all of this through the lens of my life experience personally. [00:07:48] Now let's go and talk about that Jehovah's Witness life a little bit. What we believed and then eventually I'm going to take it to the life as me as a child. And then how I grew up through adulthood and into married life to do this. Let me first give you some idea of what the Jehovah's Witness schedule was. I think I've touched on this a little bit before. But remember this is a very performance based cult. So there were things to do and my family did them all. [00:08:21] I want you to understand the basic setup of the congregation the meetings and what we did when we were knocking on doors. This is effectively what my new life as one of Jehovah's Witnesses at the age of eight or nine began to revolve around on Tuesday night. There was the corrugation book study that was typically at an individual's private home. People would volunteer their homes for these books studies. These studies were one hour long in duration and they would alternate what books we would go through we would go through a book about Revelation let's say and then once we went entirely through that book we would go through the Greatest Man book about Jesus and his life. So it was a question and answer session as a lot of these meetings are. And these were small groups usually 10 to 20 people in some congregations maybe they didn't have enough private homes that were volunteered. So they would do these books studies at the corrugations Keenum all Thursday night was the Theocratic Ministry School and the service meeting. This was a two hour meeting. The Theocratic Ministry School was a program designed to help Jehovah's Witnesses be more effective preachers when they were going out door to door it never really made sense to me how some of this was supposed to translate for brothers. [00:09:56] Brothers had talks such as the bible reading where they would get up for five minutes and read a portion of the Bible there's not a lot I don't know about you but going up to somebody's door and reading for five minutes would be kind of awkward. But this is what they did and I understand they just wanted us to be effective readers. There were also other talks especially of course brothers. I think we're really just being groomed to be effective public speakers. And if you ask a lot of extra ho as witnesses that's about the one thing that we got from this this call when we left that we could take with us was the ability to do some measure of public speaking if we if we wanted to for sisters and the congregation they were to get up and give demonstrations their talks. They were given a subject and the setting and some sort of a setting like going door to door or on a Bible study with a single mom or something like that and they would sit up on the stage with another sister who would be their householder. So one sister would be basically preaching to the other sister. And of course in these scenarios and it was always funny to me anyway that the other sister if there was a magazine or any literature being presented or whatever it always ended up in the best case scenario of course and you know nobody ever said in these parts get off my porch before I call the cops. [00:11:34] But you know this is how they were to be give and it was to be encouraging to the congregation so sisters would get up and give these parts with one another. At least I have to say at least that in some way mimicked what went on in the actual ministry when you were knocking on doors what the brothers had to do had nothing at all to do with such. Then there was the service meeting the service meeting on Thursday night was again about an hour long this was a two hour meeting Theocratic Ministry School was an hour and the service meeting was an hour and the service meeting was taken from the king the ministry the king the ministry is a pamphlet that baptized members of Jehovah's Witnesses receive and it has announcements from the branch office it has specific articles on subject matters. [00:12:38] If for instance it was the end of the year we might have articles encouraging us to preach to people around the holidays whatever seemed relevant at the time or if there was a need for Kingdom Hall is to be built in certain areas there would be a call in there to help with this. There were just different things like that that would kind of stress what the organization wanted you to either help with or to know as well as doing that the Kuna ministry would have parts called the local needs. And this was an opportunity for the local brothers your congregation to decide what it was everyone needed to work on or an issue that was presenting itself in your territory and so the elders would get up for 15 minutes or whatever and and give a talk about that. There was also the announcements where you would learn about who was whose turn it was to clean the Keenum hall that week or to mow the grass or who the speaker was going to be Sunday coming from another congregation or who messed up and had to get disfellowshipped they would announce that during the announcements as well at times or sometimes they would say that to the end of the meeting it just depended on how it works at that particular congregation that particular night. On Sunday there was the two hour meeting. It was the public talk which was typically a 45 minute talk given by one of the elders. It's just a general bible subject. [00:14:18] Maybe like I had mentioned before my dad got to give plenty on how to have a happy family life so whatever the subject matter that's what a talk would be given on and then the Watchtower study followed that which was the question and answer part going over the Watchtower lesson that had been assigned for that week. So each Watchtower had two or three lessons in it to be studied at the congregation. They were question and answer parts. The conduct would stay in the congregation someone would read the paragraph up on the stage and then the conductor would ask questions we would answer them and he was to lead us down the path that the Watchtower lesson wanted us to understand. [00:15:08] There were some unique features to the meetings. There was absolutely nothing for children. [00:15:13] There is no Sunday school no daycare no nothing. There was a mother's room at the congregation that I went to I don't know that they all had them. The mother's room and the creation I would see was almost a soundproof room with black scented glass where mothers could take their children back there and breastfeed or beat them if the children were behaving during the meetings and other congregations that I was a part of. We didn't have the mother's room but there was always rooms in the back where people could take their kids if their kids were acting out or have a little privacy if they needed it. There was no collection plate. There were just these boxes in the back. For private donations you could walk by and donate. This was a this is a big selling point of the meetings Jehovah's Witnesses like to brag about how you know there's no collection plate. You'll see it on their signs sometimes as opposed to those awful religions that pass the collection plate. Of course in years since they resorted to passing out paper slips and usually around something they want the creation of participate in and making people pledge to donate X amount per month for whatever it is that they want. So yeah they don't pass around a collection plate but come on they're passing around slips of paper for people to pledge monthly donations to. And although no one is technically going to know if they don't make follow through with that donation the individual knows and they're going to feel complete shame if they can't keep up. [00:16:51] There's a lot of guilt and shame in this organization and out of me talking heavily on that at some point. [00:16:58] The question and answer parts that were at these meetings were so dumbed down that virtually anyone could participate. It was always encouraged to answer the questions in your own words not just to read the sentence that was the answer from the paragraph word for word but there were so many people who did it was like this mind numbing call and response Keenum halls themselves if that wasn't boring enough Keenum halls themselves are drab and boring. There are often few windows of jokes before us probably so you wouldn't see outside at the colors and beauty while we sat inside and this completely sterile environment. The chairs are boring. [00:17:44] The decor is boring and you know I will say now that the parts on the meeting are abhorring though when I was a fully indoctrinated Jehovah's Witness I wouldn't say that I actually enjoyed it. Some of the parts because the meetings were laid out ahead of time with myriad materials to go over at each one. We were supposed to study before every meeting so that we knew the material and could go participate in this call in response call in response to really kind of dominated a lot of the meetings. There were no like rituals or anything that you could connect to emotionally. There was nothing that most people would I guess kind of refer to as the term spiritual. There really wasn't anything of spirit. It was a lot of intellectual exercise. And this call in response we were also supposed to do Bible reading every day. That's the encouragement at least from the organization I'm not going to say that everyone did. [00:18:58] In addition to that there was a daily text that we could study so that we could it was a little booklet that each witness had so that we could start every day with a verse and an explanation of that verse with whatever point that narrative they wanted to tie this into from some Watchtower publication of the past. And so if you haven't noticed already through the call and response through the study before the meetings through the daily Bible reading through the daily text through the personal study or family studies that were encouraged the indoctrination is so strong here. With meetings spread out like that spiritual food as they called it you really never got away from the messages that were being pounded into your mind and heart they were ever present. And then of course you had assemblies and conventions. I think I mentioned them on an earlier episode briefly but these were either one two or three day events. There was one of each throughout the year and during these there would be much greater crowds. So instead of at a book study you'd have 10 to 20 at a Kingdom Hall you might have 80 to 100 120 for like Sunday meetings at assemblies you might have anywhere from oh I don't know a couple of thousand to eight to 10000 depending on how it was broken up in that particular area. And during these I have to say you know they were kind of enjoyable. [00:20:40] OK the conventions themselves weren't that enjoyable but it was cool. It was one time where you could get dressed up go to another place you could see people you hadn't seen in a long time. As a young person you would see your friends that maybe went to another congregation and kind of hang out. That was cool. But the actual indoctrination sessions were basically it was a full time job you would start at 9:30 in the morning the program would start and it would be over at 5:00 p.m. and there might be an hour lunch. So these were heavy indoctrination sessions in and of themselves. And it just furthered their narrative. There is a hierarchy in the corrugation. Jehovah's Witnesses will claim that they're not elders like to claim that they're just there to serve the congregation. So they're the lowest among the brothers but that's completely not true. The elders have the ability to decide whether or not you get shunned. So there's some power dynamics that are going on here. And I just thought I'd lay out briefly who these people are what the labels are for the different types of people that make up your average congregation. [00:22:02] First you have the rare person that is just the study. Maybe it's just a kid in the creation of one of the families or maybe it's a Bible study someone is studying with someone that they met knocking on doors or at work or whatever that person is interested in comes to the meeting. Then you have what are called unbaptized publishers. So a person that start studying with the witnesses is expected at some point to start participating in the field ministry work. [00:22:32] That person is not baptized they're not a full fledged witness but they can still be an unbaptized publisher the publisher name is a throwback to the fact that this is or was the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York. They were essentially a publishing house for all these magazines and books and back in the day those magazines and books were actually sold door to door and there were people who took commissions on them. That's not necessarily how it happens anymore but there were people who supported themselves doing that back in the day. And so the term publishers still used you also have the baptized publishers. Now these are full fledged Jehovah's Witnesses who are regular in going out and knocking on doors. Beyond that you have the auxilary pioneers. These are people who have devoted I believe now it's 50 hours a month that they can sign up on a month to month basis whenever they want to go out for 50 hours that month they're announced from the platform. So Brother so-and-so or sister so-and-so is an auxiliary pioneer and they get some accolades for that and get to feel good about themselves. Regular pioneers are people who basically sign a contract to devote. They used to be a thousand hours when I was doing it I think it's like 840 now and it breaks down to like 70 hours a month or something. But anyway that's what a regular pioneer does now. And then there are a ministerial servants who can only be brothers and the congregation. [00:24:20] They are brothers who handle various responsibilities around the creation whether it be handing out literature or handling microphones for the call and response sessions or running a yard crew for the Keenum all maintenance or just any number of things giving territories out to brothers and sisters to work out in the field ministry. Beyond that you have the elders. That's what ministerial servants are essentially aspiring to be they're working their way up. Elders are of course all brothers and they give the public talks. They handle all the important corrugation manners matters like the accounts they handle the direction of all of the meetings. They are the ones who would like conduct the Watchtower study call and response sessions or the book study in someone's home and they make all of the judicial decisions. [00:25:29] You know most of the judicial That's because Jehovah's Witnesses have their own judicial judicial system. [00:25:39] Beyond that you have the circuit overseers the circuit overseers visit congregations on a six month rotation essentially and just make sure everything's in order and basically check in on everybody and give specially encouraging talks during which the congregation members fall all over themselves and laugh at every dumb joke they make and think that they are the most awesome person in the world and all the brothers wear full suits instead of slacks and sport coats so that they can they can you know look the part of you know present themselves best when a circuit overseer comes it is a big deal for a week and all of a sudden the attendance spike at the congregation and there are so many more people there than there ever are on any normal week and everybody loves everybody and everything is great. And then he leaves and the next week there is nobody at the meetings. And the brothers can't find their suit and suddenly they're aware that that those ugly dress pants with ugly sport coat that don't match. That's how it happens. [00:26:49] Beyond that there are district overseers. They essentially manage the circuits in the circuit overseers. Occasionally they make accommodations. [00:26:58] I don't know exactly how long they get around it is before they get around all of them. But of course when they do it's the same festivities as when the circuit overseer is. And now now we're going to talk about the magnificent seven magnificent seven are the governing body of Jehovah's Witnesses that reside in New York state one time at the end of the Brooklyn Bridge. There was the Watchtower headquarters there was a big Watchtower sign. Since then they have moved to I think it's Wallkill New York maybe wrong on that regardless. Who cares. I'm not going. The governing body the Magnificent Seven these seven men are responsible for the organization. They have recently even come out and labeled themselves the guardians of doctrine. [00:27:52] What's that spell. Guardians of doctrine. G O D. I kid you not. This is from their own mouths. They are the guardians of doctrine. [00:28:06] And so these men are responsible for essentially everything that goes on in the organization today. Now originally the organization started with one man Charles Taze Russell and it was then eventually he died and then Rutherford took over. [00:28:28] Kind of in a hostile takeover. He wasn't supposed to. And as you go down through the history eventually they decided that rather than just one person. Just like in the congregation there's a body of elders. They decided to have this governing body. This group of men who would lead the organization. Now right now it's the Magnificent Seven. And other times I believe there have been other numbers of people on the governing body. And people can be appointed to it. There is a whole political thing there and it's all done up in New York and it's not like members of the congregations vote on it. It just happens. There's a new person and they participate. When I was growing up no one well people could find out who the governing body was. But you really didn't ever see them in the last few years they become extremely public. They go to conventions and people flock to them as though they were talking to the ODIs themselves and get their pictures taken with them. And they're special and they give these talks and they've really put themselves at the forefront of the organization. It's just kind of an interesting development over when I was young and they were in the background and nobody really knew who wrote what or who said what. Now they have really come to the forefront and gotten attention. All right now let's talk about field service now Field Service. Again that's when we went out knocked on people's doors. [00:30:09] There were meetings at the Keenum hall every day during the week Monday through Friday usually at around 9:00 on Saturdays we would meet for field service at 9:30. That way you could sleep in you know get that extra half hour. And then on Sundays after the meeting the meeting usually ended around noon and then around 1:00 we would go out for like an hour or something like that the field service meeting was a 15 minute meeting conducted by a brother who would give some sort of bible topic that was relevant to maybe one of the magazines they were placing that that week or one of the books for the month or whatever the case and they would organize people in the car groups find out who had plans with who they would divvy up territory and send everybody on their way. There was always a break and that was like the best thing about field service was that there was a break usually around 11:00 11:30 people would go to a spot maybe particularly agreed upon a restaurant for us. For years it was McDonald's. Everybody would meet there. Drink coffee generally be extremely cheap and pay very little money to the actual McDonald's but sit around and swap war stories from that morning in entirely too loud of a tone for the people who were sitting around and kind of dominate that restaurant while paying for very little food or anything. So now you can get. I understand. I don't know if that's I don't know if that's boring to the average person or not but I wanted you to understand kind of you know how these things function and what the structure is now that you understand that. Let me tell you briefly what they believe. [00:32:07] First let me say that Jehovah's Witnesses have a term for their system of beliefs. [00:32:13] The truth in all caps envision it with a little trademark sign behind it. The truth. [00:32:20] Kind of like the Ohio State University if you're a sports fan out there this is the one the only truth from God's one and only true book the Bible. If you believe anything other than this you are wrong. There is true religion. Jehovah's Witnesses have it there is false religion. That's what everybody else has not. Not only are you wrong but you are blinded by Satan the Devil himself. If you don't take to the truth when we come to your door and present it to you I don't know how to emphasize this anymore. People ask one another when did you learn the truth. How did you come into the truth and so on people struggle after leaving Jehovah's Witnesses sometimes years or decades after. They don't even believe it anymore. Not to refer to it as the truth. I believe this is one of the most simple and ingenious methods ever thought of for indoctrinating someone. Once you have that truth do you really need to even consider anything else. Why would you. You are locked down by this one little name. [00:33:38] The truth. [00:33:41] So are you ready. Are you the listener ready to learn the truth. I'm about to break it down for you. All the years of human existence that have ever been or ever will be. [00:33:55] Here we go. Jehovah is God's name and Jehovah alone is the all mighty Jesus is his son sent to Earth by him to die for our sins. The Holy Spirit is God's active force that he uses to accomplish things. Now we are all pawns in a bet between Jehovah and Satan who was once an angel but wanted all the glory for himself so he rebelled against Jehovah Satan wagered that man was best off by managing himself and didn't need Jehovah's input Jehovah set out to prove that man apart from him was incapable of ruling himself and needed Jehovah's guidance. Satan has been trying to pull man away from Jehovah to serve him or anyone but Jehovah ever since this wager between the two of them impacts all of us. We live in sin and imperfection and since perfect lives were lost in sin. Adam and Eve only perfect life given without sin. Jesus Christ could balance the scales of justice yeah perfection is only batting 3:33 but that's good in the majors right. And yeah only one perfec life was given to balance the scales of what was lost by two perfec laws and it took a special person and God's only begotten son to come down from heaven to do this not just a regular perfect human but was a half price sale on perfect justice that they so we'll call it even. So ever since the world has struggled under Satan's control as God has backed away. [00:35:45] Thus proving that Jehovah has a right to rule and that we need him God's plan to write this starts with Jesus death and then the year 1914 through some very creative prophetic prophetic math involving the book of Daniel and several completely incorrect predictions that nobody wants to talk about. They arrive at 1914 as the beginning of the last days of this wicked system of things since World War 2 happened to start that year. They really think they've landed on the correct year this time of course. Originally they thought that the world was actually going to end in 1914 but when that didn't happen the organization does decided that well it must be the beginning of the end. It's as just as good right. So in 1914 Jesus supposedly began reigning in heaven over the earth. It is an invisible rain for now. A pair of C-A or presence of course because you know no one likes a bragger. In 1919 Jesus chose the International Bible Students as Jehovah's witnesses were called back then as his people his only people to dispense truth and to this world. Of course back then they smoked and celebrated holidays and did all kinds of things they would never do today. But I digress. The changes thereafter have been seen as a refining work. At some point imminently and by eminently Apparently they mean any day now for over the past century something called the Great Tribulation will break out. [00:37:27] It will start with the destruction of Babylon the Great taken from Revelation the world empire of false religion. Jehovah will put it in the heads of world leaders to eradicate all religion from the earth. Because that will eliminate things like holidays. The merchants will beat their chests in horror and frustration as they can no longer sell things like they once did. Money will become worthless. [00:37:53] People will be throwing it in the streets at that point. The world will descend into chaos. All religion will cease except one. Can you guess which one that you can't help. Jehovah's Witnesses will stand alone continuing to do their thang despite any persecution because of this. The nations are going to turn on them and when they do it will be like touching God's eyeball and he will immediately react with a day of his fury. Armageddon in which billions of people will be slaughtered mercilessly because they didn't listen to the warnings given by Jehovah's Witnesses once everyone is dead. The world will start to grow back to perfection as will the members of Jehovah's Witnesses. They will spend the next 1000 years growing back to perfection and cleaning up this earth. Don't worry the birds are going to pick apart all the billions of the dead so they won't have to handle the bodies of all their dead loved ones. [00:38:50] Be kind of rough you know stepping over grandpa to get to you know one of your kids who died. I mean you know you weren't supposed to care about those people anyway. They were worldly as I explained on a previous episode so you know what I ever how. [00:39:08] They will all live in a beautiful paradise as the earth goes back to the state of the Garden of Eden. Everyone gets a panda and a lion you see and all their artists depictions of this of this paradise people are playing with lions and pandas. Animals will no longer be dangerous and there is no fear because of that. The animals I guess are going to be perfect. No fear no pain no tears just pure bliss and lots of Jehovah's Witnesses the dead will be raised from the memorial tombs and a great resurrection that will take place during these 1000 years. It will be a resurrection of the righteous and the unrighteous. They will look the same as they did before so that we can recognize them. Otherwise we're just talking creepy zombies. We can have that a scripture says that the wages of sin pays is death so death is therefore the equalization of their sins. They get a do over so to speak if they listen to Jehovah's Witnesses and study with them at that time they can possibly live forever if they don't. Well you know Joe was going to have to kill him again but yeah. Oh well that happens a lot with Jova. He likes to kill people. After that 1000 years humans on earth will be perfect. Now at that point you think that everyone could breathe a sigh of relief and maybe you know I don't know. Be happy. Nope during that one thousand years Satan and his demons were bound up in an abyss. [00:40:45] But at the end they are going to be let loose to try to tempt humankind one more time. Humans still will not have proven themselves worthy gods pretty insecure like that. So he will unleash them. They will tempt mankind and the carnage and fallout from that will be as the sands of the sea. Innumerable deaths as mankind falters once again now in the end. [00:41:10] Whoever is left over gets to live forever this time. For reals I guess. Unless of course they turn on God like Satan did because like he was perfect and he turned on God so that Jehovah did give his creatures free will after all. He just doesn't really like them using it. [00:41:29] So if they were at that point to exercise free will and do something that Jehovah doesn't like. Then again he can smite them. So that's the story in a nutshell. That's what they believe and what I believed for so many years. [00:41:44] In the next episode I'm going to get into the things that they don't advertise in their books not just doctrine but the actual culture of the organization. You see that is the most damaging part of the organization. I'm going to introduce two methods of control that are used by cults to keep people in line. It is observed in what has been termed religious abuse but it's also seen in other forms of abuse and it's a very important subject that you know whether you've ever been in a cult or not. You've likely seen at some point in your life essentially how people control other people and get them to do things that they otherwise probably would not do if left to their own base humanity. In my opening episode I explain what life was like up until the age of 8 or 9 when my parents became Jehovah's Witnesses. In order to understand how much life changed, it can help to understand where I came from. Direct Download Here [expand title="Click Here To Show Transcript"] [00:00:01] There are over eight million Jehovah's Witnesses Jay Dub's or J-ws worldwide. I wasn't born one was introduced to it around the age of eight or 9 and would spend the next three decades trying to process what I had unwittingly become involved in ultimately leaving and costing me dearly. This J.W. life is my response to the encouragement I've received to write a book about my life. In my story you're going to learn about this called and why refer to it as such rather than as a religion. You're going to see how I went from suicidal an incredibly anxious to free and happy. Why I put on 50 pounds and how I took it off while my wife and I owed the IRS fifty five thousand dollars and how we paid that off in 18 months. And while that wasn't even the biggest win to come from that time there are lessons to be learned here whether you're in a cult or you're just your average person living life for the SJ doves out there. [00:01:54] So today we're going to talk about my childhood before my family became Jehovah's Witnesses up until I was around the age of eight. I'll give you a warning up front this part of my life is a collection of somewhat disconnected memories and this feels a little bit choppy in places. That's why it's kind of hard to remember that far back. And at this point in my life it's not like I have family to to help build a story around. So it will hopefully become more conversational as we get into more solid memories. But this first part is important. It shows what life was like for me in the beginning of my life. Maybe some of you will find a throwback in here for something you remember as a kid. In the end you can't appreciate the change in my life without first knowing what it started out to be. So you know as a kid started out normally. I was a little boy. I like Spiderman. I like the Incredible Hulk. I remember watching Dukes of Hazzard and playing with my GI Joes. I had a few friends that I remember going to their house and playing with some kids probably from school. I can remember going over their houses and playing although I love toys all I actually ever needed in my life was a ball to give me a ball so it against something. I'll roll it though to myself I could play all day. That's all I ever needed. And sports were a huge thing to me. [00:03:17] We lived in the same neighborhood as my grandparents probably maybe two three blocks away. So there were. We were a pretty close family. We could just walk over there at any time if we wanted. I remember holidays I remember going trick or treating in my neighborhood. I have no idea. Cannot tell you what I dressed like. But whatever it was it was fun. I remember getting buckets full of candy and who doesn't like that Thanksgiving was another holiday that I remember being a lot of fun. We would go to my uncle and aunts house on my dad's side. And you know obviously the family would come. I even had a grandma who lived in Georgia. We called her granny and we'd eat and watch football play outside with my cousins. It was a good time. For Christmas we go to my grandparents house on my mom's side. I remember they give us catalogs when we were little and we were supposed to go through them and you know look at toys and circle whatever it was. I guess I don't know if I believed in Santa. I guess I did. So whatever we want to Santa to bring I guess he shopped at Service Merchandise. So we'd circle those and you know see what he would get. [00:04:33] I remember that when we went over to their house there was lots of good food and cookies and sweets always had a sweet tea. Those who know me know that. [00:04:44] So we would go over there. My aunt and uncle on that side of the family would be there and their kids and they would come all the way down from Michigan and it was just it was just fun to have family. I think there were some other people who would show up maybe some first cousins or something at different times of my life. I can't remember but that's I never really had I guess much of a connection before. We were kind of kind of left our families behind a little bit. Anyway I remember Saturday morning cartoons I remember getting up watching cartoons without a care in the world. Saturday morning cartoons were awesome. I remember coming home from school and there were cartoons I remember. I think there were those after school specials. I probably watched those as well. At the house that we lived in we had a creek behind it. Go back there and play a lot of times like any kids you know. I always wonder what was in the holes around the creek and I'm sure I stuck sticks in there and who knows what I bothered doing. I remember that I had a sandbox the sandbox was awesome. What kid doesn't love that. I remember one time obviously I was playing with the ball in the backyard it rolled next to a tree and there was a garter snake wrapped around the tree and of course I reached down for the ball saw the snake and thought I was going to die. [00:06:11] Who does it. It's a snake. [00:06:14] We had a dog named is a collie. For some reason we gave him away. All I remember is that he he liked to eat the backyard. And so our grass soon became a bit. Life was awesome. The only thing that that really created a change in our life was my dad and his job prospects. He never was the kind of person who could really go out and get a job. He always struggled with that. Someone found him a job he would do it. He loved he would go work. He was a hard worker and an honest guy but he wasn't exactly what one would define as a go getter. So he worked at Brown and Williamson here in Louisville Kentucky had apparently that was a really good place to work when the company moved to Georgia. His mom worked there. So I don't know. I'm assuming that had some influence in how he got the job in the first place given his track record in the future. But anyway so the company moved. He chose not to move with it. I think he married my mom at that time and stayed here and so what started as a good job to kind of change because when that company left. All I know is that he bounced around a little bit. He worked at U.P.S. for a while worked at General Electric which was a pretty good job but they laid him off. And so ultimately being laid off from these jobs. There was a time at which we had to. We had to make a change. [00:07:54] The finances just won't allow us to continue living there. So we moved in the middle of the school year. I was about seven years old. So that would have been the second grade. I remember when we moved to the new school I remember a teacher leading me down the what seemed like cavernous court or two to my new class. [00:08:19] I had to be taken in front of the class and introduced everybody and I just wanted to disappear and die. I've always I've not I'm not a person who likes to be in front of a lot of people. I am not an extrovert by any means. So actually me just doing this is kind of out of the ordinary for me. I'm trying to push myself to do something new here despite you know you know the second great change you know that was nothing compared to what was about to happen in my life. For one thing I remember our new house had some issues I think unbeknownst to my parents our new house was infested with roaches. We had a neighbor who on one side of us who don't know his backyard was kind of horny. There were a lot of TV parts and appliances and things back there and it wasn't the greatest. I don't know if that helped lead to the infestations that probably went through our whole neighborhood or if it was just the fact that we had old houses. But regardless I remember the roaches I remember laying there at night watching roaches crawl on the wall and hoping that they wouldn't come visit me on my bed. I remember my mom would go and get this. I don't know some sort of Wiccan chemical stuff to try to deal with. I remember the term German roaches being thrown around. So maybe that's what we had. [00:09:48] But I know that once the chemical is put down we had mutated disgusting terrifying roaches that kind of kind of upped the ante and raised it to the next level. Ultimately that problem was that pest was eradicated and we moved on. Apparently I've been told by my parents that there was a story where I kept telling them there was something in my bed and I'm sure they thought it was a monster like you know all kids have little little dreams about those kinds of things or nightmares. But once they found the mouse droppings they realized there was actually a problem. So that that was another problem how sad. And then her problem also had cave crickets. And if you don't know what they are they also think they're called camelback crickets. They're disgusting huge crickets with giant back legs that look like spiders. And I don't like spiders either but we didn't have a problem with those. We just had the cave crickets. So those kind of things were kind of scarring to me as a kid. There was a lot changing you know we've gone from house in a nicer neighborhood to now a house and not so great a neighborhood. And you know a new school there was all that going on. But as I was reflecting on this. I kind of came to realize that. So in the third grade I almost failed. I had all my work done. I found it at the end of the here in my school desk clearly wasn't an organized kid. I don't know you know I had always made decent grades before then so maybe it was just to change it moving and everything. But I also realized that it was around that time. [00:11:38] That's my mom I think of course again I can't go back and ask I'm trying to develop a time line now here in retrospect but I believe this was around the time that my mom started studying the Bible. [00:11:55] Well they say studying the Bible but it's really studying one of Jehovah's Witnesses publications a book that they've produced. They are the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York. So they they were a publishing company and one of the books they published at the time was used to study the Bible as they had picked verses to study to fit their narrative of course. So anyway my mom started studying with the lady next door because yes as if the rest of the stuff wasn't bad enough. We moved in next to Jehovah's Witnesses and so there was a family next door. The mom next door and my mom became fast friends. They would talk about life or whatever my mom always had lots of Bible questions. She had a brother has a brother that is a Baptist minister I believe went through the seminary and I don't think he could ever quite answer her questions. And Jehovah's Witnesses or at least not to her satisfaction Jehovah's Witnesses though have an answer for everything. [00:13:08] Now the answer just having an answer doesn't necessarily mean it's a correct answer. But they have an answer for just about anything you can ask. They have some way to make it fit into their narrative so it would have been likely around that time. Things are really changing. It would just been me and I have one younger brother at the time he was three and a half four years younger than I. So I was around you know between eight and nine. [00:13:40] And when my mom probably started studying and you know I don't I think in retrospect I don't believe it was just a coincidence that my grades suffered so bad that year because you know it's not like not only were we in this new situation and my mom was studying but that means she was also taking us to meetings as a Jehovah's Witness at least at that time you would go to meetings Tuesday night for an hour Thursday night for two hours and then Sunday for two hours in the morning. So you know there was a time commitment right off the bat and that that time commitment would grow. I'll get into that later in later years. But you know that's that's a lot for a kid. [00:14:25] And and along with that there would have been other changes so I don't know exactly when but at some point my mom was no longer wanting to do the holidays. So you know because if you know Jehovah's Witnesses one thing most people know about them is you're not going to see them celebrating Christmas or birthdays or anything. They just they don't celebrate anything day. They see it all as pagan and therefore they believe it's not what God would want for them. At first my dad was not interested in that life. My mom would go to the meetings. I'm pretty sure she would take us. I don't know if she took us to some or all but it took my dad about a year to kind of come around and start wondering what it is that my mom was involved in. [00:15:22] Again I believe I can't confirm but I think that the first thing my dad ever went to was a district convention of Jehovah's Witnesses where my mom was baptized. So just to explain that a little bit when you study with one of Jehovah's Witnesses and they have a book that you're going to study through at the end of that book you should have enough knowledge to essentially become one of Jehovah's Witnesses. They want to make sure that you have brought your life into correspondence with their values you need to. You can't be living whatever they would deem an immoral life. So if you're living an upright life as they see it and if you have the head knowledge from these books you can go through another book with a series of three elders. The elders are the group of men who lead each individual congregation and three of those will sit sit down with you at different times and kind of ask you questions you'll answer them. They're kind of evaluating where you are in life if they feel that you're ready they will allow you to become baptizes one of Jehovah's Witnesses those baptisms are held at the assemblies or conventions of Jehovah's Witnesses. And as far as that goes there are two assemblies a year one in the spring one in the fall typically there's a special day a one day in the spring and a two day circuit assembly in the fall. Then during the summer is when they typically have their district conventions. So these are the district is a is a huge group of an area a region as they call it today. Regional conventions. [00:17:10] And so you know back back in the day the reasons were much bigger and you go to. Well we would go to a Freedom Hall in Louisville Kentucky and there'd be how. [00:17:22] I'm thinking 12000 but I may be mistaken. Maybe I'm more like eight. I'm thinking it was about 12000 people. And so the first thing that my dad went to was a big deal from my mom to get baptized. This is a big step that she was taking to become one of Jehovah's Witnesses officially. And I think my dad saw that as a time where you know this is this is getting real and I want to jump in there and find out what this is. [00:17:49] So he did that. It wasn't too long after that there was a very nice charismatic brother in the congregation who kind of took my dad under his wing. He studied with my dad. [00:18:01] And I think the next year my dad got baptized so so it didn't take too long. You know we're talking maybe a year or two if memory serves. For my parents to become a full fledged Jehovah's Witnesses and at that point there were definitely be no more holidays. [00:18:24] I can still remember my last Christmas I remember my mom sitting me down and telling me you know we weren't going to do this anymore. [00:18:32] I can't remember exactly but I'm sure I wasn't too pleased with that. That prospect that it was I was told what all Jehovah's Witness kids are told. [00:18:43] There's a theme that is that is often used and that is that as a child of Jehovah's witnesses you know we don't need those those holidays to celebrate or to give gifts. [00:18:58] You know essentially those holidays people just have to give gifts. It's not real. Nobody [00:19:03] really likes it. We can give you gifts all the time and from the heart. Oh give you. I'll let you place a wager on how much celebration and gift giving there is in the average Jehovah's Witness family compared to you know the celebrations that are set out that everyone participates in in the world in general. I don't know I can't speak for all families but I didn't have a lot of friends as a kid. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses who were receiving a whole lot of gifts or celebrating much of anything. So anyway life changed a lot. [00:19:48] That's kind of the I guess the nexus of the beginning of my life. How it started it started out like I would assume any other kids. And then you know all it took was a chance move by parents you know had a financial reversal as far as I could tell. And the next thing you know we're moving and we just happen to out of all the human beings on this earth move in next door to one of Jehovah's Witnesses and things started to change. [00:20:21] So in the next episode I'm going to talk about how my life changed. Aside from you know a few little things I've mentioned already what it's like for a young child growing up in this cult. What it's like for them when they go to school. What it's like at home. [00:20:40] This is this is not just a religion that you put on when you go to church. This is a life and it encompasses everything you do. It encompasses the way you think the way you feel the way you act. It is everything. [00:20:58] So I really do appreciate you listening. If you like this or think that it might help somebody else please subscribe so that you can get each episode as they come out and tell others about this. I'm putting this out into the world to be of help and it's not going to help anybody obviously. People don't spread the word. I don't have a big podcast network behind me. I don't have the cache of Leah Remini. That allowed her to do a series on Scientology. I'm just a guy that lived a certain life that wants to expose what literally millions of other people around the world have gone through. There are over eight million Jehovah's Witnesses and scores of ex Jehovah's Witnesses out there. There are millions more that have family or friends that are Jehovah's Witnesses that they might be concerned about. Take this to them so that they can see what it's like. And if nothing else maybe it just helps somebody to feel less alone. Visit my site at w w dot this J-ws life dot com if you want to discuss this further. I'll even post some pics and other information there that will add to the story if you like. If you look now you'll find some of my childhood before things changed. Some pictures from that there will be a place to comment below each episode that I put out so there can be a discussion. Ask questions give suggestions or if you want just say hi I might answer them on another podcast or maybe have fun you know. [00:22:20] Of course I'll engage in the discussion there but maybe there's something that can help me to even change this podcast to make it better. Remember that others are fighting things that you might not realize and give them the benefit of the doubt. Love others do no harm and go be happy. [/expand]
Our quote for today is from Theodore Roosevelt. He said, “Wide differences of opinion in matters of religious, political, and social belief must exist if conscience and intellect alike are not to be stunted, if there is to be room for healthy growth.” In this podcast, we are making our way through Garry R. Morgan's book, "Understanding World Religions in 15 Minutes a Day." Our Understanding World Religions topic for today is, "Jehovah’s Witnesses" Jehovah’s Witnesses are well known for the door-to-door pairs who encourage people to join Bible studies and purchase Watchtower literature. They have produced more than thirty billion pieces of literature and spend over a billion hours annually distributing it. The Watchtower magazine is published in nearly two hundred languages and has a worldwide circulation that more than doubles that of Reader’s Digest. Jehovah’s Witness theology is based on the writings of Charles Taze Russell, who, influenced by certain Adventist preachers as to the second coming of Christ, founded the Zion’s Watch Tower and Herald of Christ’s Presence magazine in 1879. He wrote articles teaching that Christ had returned invisibly in 1874 and would establish God’s visible kingdom in 1914. Soon after, he established Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society, the forerunner of the current Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. As they do today, Russell’s followers sold books, magazines, and other literature door to door. ...
In this episode I have a friend and brother in Christ, Voytek, join in as a guest to discuss some of the false prophecies of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Voytec is
In June, the High Court ruled that the Jehovah's Witnesses organisation was liable for sexual abuse committed by one of its members. The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Britain - to give the group its official name - had failed to take adequate safeguarding steps when senior members of the organisation were aware that a fellow Witness was a known paedophile. It was the first civil case in the UK of historical sexual abuse brought against the Christian-based religious movement. The BBC's Religious Affairs Correspondent, Caroline Wyatt, explores the implications of the Court's decision and investigates the Jehovah's Witnesses explicit policy of attempting to deal with all allegations of sexual abuse in-house. The Report has gained access to confidential internal documents, sent out only to those who are senior in the Jehovah's Witnesses. These reveal the organisation's reluctance to involve the secular authorities in cases where a crime has been committed by one Witness against another. Caroline Wyatt hears from former Witnesses who have suffered abuse and who claim that the organisation's doctrine and procedures have allowed offenders within the congregation to avoid prosecution. Presenter: Caroline Wyatt Producer: Hannah Barnes.
