Tonight`s Jazz Feature is a kind of meeting between east and west. The leader is the great tenor saxophonist Harold Land and he is paired with trumpeter Joe Gordon who had moved to Los Angeles from Boston and guitarist Wes Montgomery who was living for a time in San Francisco. Those three made up the western contingent. The eastern group consists of Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums who all were Cannonball Adderley`s rhythm section and one of the best. This adds up to a solid straight-ahead Jazz record date. It was recorded at The Jazz Workshop, San Francisco`s leading Jazz club on a night when it was closed, The venue was chosen for it`s good acoustics. The album consists of 3 new Harold Land tunes, Wes Montgomery`s famous `West Coast Blues` (the title track) a ballad by Billie Holiday called `Don`t Explain` and a Charlie Parker tune. All in all a good record date with lots of inspired moments. All recorded in May of 1960 and tonight`s Jazz Feature.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Nikki Yanofsky over Zoom video!Montreal based jazz singer Nikki Yanofsky returns today with the release of her new album ‘Nikki By Starlight' via MNRK Music Group – a 15-track voyage through vintage jazz standards from storied musicians Frank Sinatra, Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, and more. ‘Nikki By Starlight' was co-produced with the JUNO-winning producer/composer Paul Shrofel and features contributions from Stevie Wonder's bandmate Greg Phillinganes, Nathan East (Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock, Michael Jackson) and the iconic Cuban-American jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.Yanofsky recorded these songs on a vintage RCA 77C, the microphone that was used by Ella Fitzgerald. Yanofsky's transportive musical touch brings the Great American Songbook into the 21st century, providing a chance for new audiences and existing fans alike to fall in love with a refreshed style.Ultimately, ‘Nikki By Starlight' is a mix of ballads, uptempo tracks and sambas that make you believe in teleportation. “Comes Love” has a real slinky vibe reminiscent of an old-fashioned speakeasy, “C'est Si Bon'' is a nod to 1960s Paris with a very classic French arrangement, “West Coast Blues'' features a pocketed ensemble with Greg Phillinganes on organ and a Lalo Schifrin inspired horn solo, and “Estate” is an Italian classic featuring Arturo Sandovel's signature trumpet. With ‘Nikki By Starlight,' Yanofsky continues to prove her artistry – stemming all the way back to when she sang the National Anthem on live television at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in front of 3.2 billion people. Yanofsky's self-titled album ‘Nikki,' released in 2010, gained the attention of the late prolific songwriter Rod Temperton (“Thriller,” “Rock With You,” “Boogie Nights”), who took her under his wing becoming her mentor, creative coach and musical champion. Her sophomore effort Little Secret, found Yanofsky exploring the velvet-clad sweet spot between jazz and pop with bold sentiments that signaled a self-assured coming of age. In 2020 she released ‘Turn Down The Sound,' a 10-track LP (eOne Music) that showcases her independence and marks a newfound departure for her career as a young musician, earning praise upon release from Billboard, Uproxx, and more.We want to hear from you! Ray Charles, T-Bone Walker e Cab Calloway vão animar o #BluesBox de hoje com o West Coast Blues!
The 40s and 50s post-war migration brought tough working conditions in Chicago which offered stability over the miserable sharecropper existence of the Delta. Both were fodder for the some of the very best in classic blues. The production lines of Detroit and other cities on the Eastern seaboard were models of a different kind of work that the Industrial Age had to offer. But the West Coast wasn't the place you'd expect to find the blues: shipyards, agriculture, and urban sprawl would aggregate so many different styles that rhythm and blues was a fusion of the many different sensibilities that were brought with both performer and listener alike westward from east of the Mississippi. Having the hub of the world of entertainment in the Southland didn't hurt either. We'll be browsing the sounds of some of the greats: McCracklin, Fulson, Otis, Mayfield, and (of course) T-Bone Walker in the Deeper Roots morning show today. West Coast Blues led to blues-based rock in large part because of the exposure to the many different styles of the mid-century blues bands and solo rockers. West Coast Blues Roots is the name of our show this morning on KOWS-LP Occidental.
On this episode of Blues In The Basement, Cooki B and Malvin highlight West Coast Blues as we hear from artists like T-Bone Walker and Floyd Dixon. Make sure to tune into this brand new episode on the KUDZUKIAN app and kudzukian.com.

Craig has written about his experience to make sense of what he did and why he did it. Helen Kirkham is a Saturday Live listener who had a road accident as a teen and later trained to be a nurse. She attended a lecture by the doctor who saved her life. Sports reporter Emma John who is a cricket fan, a bluegrass fiddler and singledom advocate. A world war, a small city, and the largest movement of people in US history. Mix these together, and you’ll get a unique, patchwork style of music. Join us as we pick apart the ingredients of the West Coast Blues. We'll have a look at the epicenter of Oakland's Blues scene during the 1940s, '50s, and '60s, explore the destruction of that scene, and reflect on how history seems to repeat itself.
Skidompha Library friend and Blues historian Mark Addison put together yet another fine lineup of Blues artistry. Blues music influenced even the most innovative California musicians of the 1960s. San Francisco and Los Angeles drew blues aficionados who used some of the most expressive forms of the traditional music to create their own unique sound. One of the finest guitarists of the century, Blind Blake's finger-picked playing evokes the jazzy, melodious rags and stomps of the period. With breathtaking skill, Blake sings and plays from blues to breakdowns to shuffles to novelty tunes. Blind" Blake (born Arthur Blake, circa 1893, Jacksonville, Florida; died: circa 1933) was an influential blues singer and guitarist. He is often called "The King Of Ragtime Guitar". There is only one photograph of him in existence. Blind Blake recorded about 80 tracks for Paramount Records in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He was one of the most accomplished guitarists of his genre with a surprisingly diverse range of material. His complex and intricate fingerpicking has inspired Reverend Gary Davis, Jorma Kaukonen, Ry Cooder, Ralph Mctell and many others. He is most known for his distinct guitar sound that was comparable in sound and style to a ragtime piano. Very little is known about his life. His birthplace was listed as Jacksonville, Florida by Paramount Records but even that is in dispute. Nothing is known of his death. Even his name is not certain. During recordings he was asked about his real name and he answered that his name was Blind Arthur Blake which is also listed on some of the song credits, strengthening his case on his real name, although there is a suggestion that his real name was Arthur Phelps. His first recordings were made in 1926 and his records sold well. His first solo record was "Early Morning Blues" with "West Coast Blues" on the B-side. Both are considered excellent examples of his style. Blake made his last recordings in 1932, the end of his career aided by Paramount's bankruptcy. It is often said that the later recordings have much less sparkle and, allegedly, Blind Blake was drinking heavily in his later years. It is likely that this led to his early death.
