If your magnet or a magnet you have registered gets selected, you win some great prizes to local places around the city! Chris Sorenson hosts the “ On Mission” segment, with Guest Sarah Gabriel Every day, foster families in Wisconsin make a difference in children's lives by providing safe and caring temporary homes. Sarah Gabriel is a foster care champion here in Madison, and she joins Chris Sorenson to talk about the rewarding, challenging life of a foster care parent. Sarah and her husband Keith had always talked about the possibility of hosting foster care kids. They started out as respite or short-term foster parents. At one point, they had three boys stay with them for six months before they were placed with family. Sarah says her own children are close to the foster kids that have stayed in their home. The decision to become a foster care parent is not one to be taken lightly - it takes a champion like Sarah to love and support kids like they are her own. He is also the president of the Princeton Club, Madison’s premier health club. Combining state of the art equipment with a highly trained fitness staff and desire to constantly offer the members the best the fitness industry has to offer has resulted in the Princeton Clubs becoming the largest, most well-respected health clubs in Madison. Besides a focus on Fitness and Personal Health, the club is championing two outstanding causes in May, and they need your help! The first event is the American Family Children’s Hospital Radiothon: For three 13-hour days, DJs from Midwest Family Broadcasting's Today's Q106 and 93.1 JAMZ will broadcast live from the lobby of the American Family Children's Hospital to tell the inspiring stories of patients, families, and staff at the 14th annual Radiothon. The second Andy highlighted was an event called “8 Miles For Water,” a community event that raises money to provide clean water to communities outside the United States. When you participate, you help prevent child disease and death, help lessen the burden on women and children by reducing the distance to water sources and help provide hygiene education and sanitation facilities. Chris Reese hosts the “My Move” segment Madison has a certain allure that draws people in from all over the world. Harry (as his American friends call him) grew up in Kenya, then moved to LA where he traveled with a band. After marrying a woman from the Midwest, he and his family eventually settled in Madison. Like any good Madison foodie, Harry has a short list of favorite places he frequents to find the best flavors the city has to offer. If it’s a steak you’re after, Tornado’s is one place you need to experience. If Mexican food is more your thing, Harry says to check out La Rosita, near Lake Monona. One event Harry highly recommends is Africa Fest, happening August 19th. The “Wonder Women” Carrie Anton and Jessica Nordskog from Wonder Idea Studio are here to help you find your next super-powered idea! Wonder: An Idea Studio is the brainchild born of Carrie Anton and Jessica Nordskog while looking to escape the 9-to-5 grind and make a go at solo gigs. They knew their path was destined toward something creative, a passion they’ve been honing since even before working as editors at Mattel’s American Girl. Instead of landing on just one idea, the “Wonder Women” had more business ideas than they knew what to do with. And that’s when their “aha moment” happened. Ideas are what they do; they’re what they know. And they’re what they provide to others when they get stuck. They want others to benefit from their scheming brains and creative mastery, and that all boils down to helping businesses and workers help themselves. The idea superpower lives within you, too. Now it’s time tap into it and bring your big ideas to life. Outline of This Episode [3:15] Donald Driver joins the I Love Madison Show for a special interview! Neil Mathweg Hosts Aubree Javaherian to talk about trailing spouses and ways introverts can connect People typically don’t plan to be a trailing spouse. More likely, the journey begins as a job opportunity for their spouse, resulting in multiple moves and corporate career climbing. As one spouse’s life and career blooms, the trailing spouse can be left feeling aimless and a bit lost. Aubree Javaherian is one of those trailing spouses and a self-declared introvert. When she first moved to Madison, she says she was nervous to join meetups or community groups. Her advice to other introverts is to look for groups who have similar interests. She says the idea that everyone is already connected is a misnomer, there are always other people who are looking for community. She recommends checking out the Revel, a creative space here in town, as well as Madison Magnets, a young entrepreneurs group! The Vlog is designed to highlight the culture in Madison, including the music scene, amazing places to visit, and a new segment called the I Love Madison Chef show! This segment will highlight local chefs and their stories, plus the history of many of Madison’s most popular food spots. Chris Sorenson hosts the “Mission of the Week” segment, with Dan Spansy and the Before16 Foundation There are an estimated 153 million orphans in the world today. Many of these orphans live in orphanages or with foster families, though some of the most unfortunate already live on the streets. In many countries, the orphans who live within the social infrastructure will "age out" at only 16 years old. While still being in adolescence, they are then treated as adults and exposed to numerous sources of manipulation and exploitation. The numbers tell a tragic story of what happens when these kids hit the street. 10-15% commit suicide within the first 2 years of aging out of the system. With a lack of resources, care, and support, these children are overwhelmed by their tragic circumstances. 60% of the girls become prostitutes. Falling prey to the world of prostitution is a prevalent consequence due to the lack of basic needs and the manipulation of older men looking to take advantage of the innocence of these young girls. 70% of the boys turn to a life of crime, often involving drug abuse. Without the love and protection of a family, or continuing education and hopes for a brighter future, many boys have their morality conformed to the hardened reality of substance abuse and criminal activity. Before16 was started to help provide care for these orphaned children and to hopefully find them a "forever family" by building awareness, connecting potential families with children in need, and advocating adoption. The foundation specializes in connecting host families with orphaned children in Eastern Europe. Currently, they are helping to host 9 children over holiday season in the Madison area. In the summer, they hope to grow that number. If you want to support this mission and make a difference in as many families as you can, check out before16.org Chris Reese hosts the “My Move” segment with guest Nick Lenzendorf After living in the Chicago area for a number of years, Nick Lensendorph decided it was time to head back to Madison! He loves that fact that the city feels big, but does not have the traffic congestion like Chicago. After moving back, Nick said it was easy to connect to people, even just walking down the street. The community is a friendly one, and people are more than willing to stop and chat, recommend a place to eat, etc. Nick says if you are looking for a way to spend an afternoon, be sure to check out the farmer’s market or any of the numerous outdoor concerts that take place during the summer! Cathy Yerges joins Neil Mathweg to talk about the Madison LinkedIn success group Cathy Yerges is a LinkedIn Trainer & Consultant for B2B Professionals, the Director of Client Services at RevGrow, and an awesome homeschool mom! Welcome back to another great episode of the I Love Madison Show! On this episode, Chris Sorenson highlights how Madison is “on-mission,” and Chris Reese interviews Dan Tinder, a local Madison resident who has a lot to say about why this city is an amazing place to live. Neil Mathweg interviews Nicole Moll, the founder of A Box of Balloons, a non-profit she started to make sure each child feels special and celebrated on their birthday! Check out this I Love Madison episode for all the details! The games continue in Madison! Neil Mathweg is about to announce the winner of the Game of Magnets for the month of January! Keep an eye on the I Love Madison Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, you may have won some sweet prizes! If you have not gotten your ILM magnet yet, reach out on social media to request one, and the hosts will mail one to you! Remember, if you see magnets around town, you can take a picture, then post them to “register” that magnet in your name! During the month of February, the ILM hosts are looking for the best cheese curds in the city, and they need your help! If you have a favorite place that serves cheese curds, be sure to let Neil Mathweg and the team know. At the end of the month, a panel of judges will determine the winner! “On-mission in Madison” with Chris Sorenson When the I Love Madison show started, the hosts decided to highlight local meetups around the city. If you want to drink a beer, then run a few miles to the next bar, there is certainly a group that does that...you can find them on meetup.com. Moving forward, however, the team decided to shift the focus a little and highlight organizations around the city that are on-mission! This means that they want to talk to organizations that are helping the community in some way, whether a church, non-profit or noble cause. If you know of an organization that you feel should be featured, contact the I Love Madison show hosts, and they will work to set up a meeting! Chris Reese hosts the “My Move” segment with guest Dan Tinder Dan Tinder moved to Madison fourteen years ago, to take a job as a late night radio host. Soon after, he made the nighttime top 40 list. Dan says he initially connected to his community through his work. He is currently a sales manager for JX Peterbilt and has fallen in love with the city of Madison and all it has to offer. Some of the places he recommends are L’Etoile Restaurant, a fine dining French restaurant in the downtown area, as well Dotty Dumpling's Dowry, a great place to get a fantastic hamburger. Dan says there are so many great festivals and events to check out, including the taste of Madison and bike night. For young families, Dan says the suburbs just outside the city offer many great options for raising children in friendly, safe neighborhoods. Check out the rest of what he had to say about this city on an isthmus! Nicole Moll Is bringing birthday joy to kids across the nation Nicole Moll loves parties and loves to celebrate! She wants to make each child feels special and celebrated on their birthday and empower parents around the country to do the same. To do this, she started an organization called A Box of Balloons. Every child deserves to feel special, be celebrated and have a memorable party, but unfortunately, that is not possible for many families. In America, 22% of children live below the poverty level. She believes that a birthday celebration can give families the joy and hope they may be missing. For more information and ways you can volunteer with this amazing organization, listen to this episode, then check out her website in the resources section below! Chris Reese hosts the “My Move” segment with guest Mike Louban Chris talks with Mike Louban, a Madison resident who recently moved into the city from Oregon. Mike moved in the middle of January, so he was a little nervous about the famous Madison winter, but says that he and his family love the city. Mike’s children were able to connect to the community through sports and exploring places in the community, like the lakes and the farmer’s market. He said the adjustment was not a hard one, although there have been a few comical things he has learned since moving to Madison. In Oregon, Mike never had to pump his own gas, as it’s illegal to do so there, so he said it took a few weeks to adjust to a new system. He would pull up to a gas pump and wait for someone to fill up his car, then realized he was waiting for something that was never going to happen. His family loves biking around the lakes, then stopping at Babcock Hall for ice cream, as well as the farmer’s market. The best thing about Madison according to Mike? The fact that you can do big-city things without the hassle of living in a big city! Welcome back to the I Love Madison show! If you are new to Madison, this show will help you connect to all the cool places and people around the city. If you are a long-time resident of Madison, you know it’s an amazing place to live! This episode is loaded with information on local meetups, restaurant suggestions, and community events! Neil Mathweg also interviews Leah Roe to talk about how she is impacting military spouses and professionals with her new startup! Connecting the “trailing spouses” in Madison The I Love Madison show is all about connecting people in the community, especially the “trailing spouses.” If you moved to Madison because your spouse took a new job, it can be very hard to make new friends or find people who share similar interests. Neil Mathweg hopes the show will help people build community, and highlight all of the amazing places around the city that Madison residents enjoy. Every week, the hosts will highlight a new meetup for you to explore, interview a Madison resident about their recent move, and feature a local influencer from the city. Chris Sorenson hosts the “Meetup of the Week” segment Chris Sorensen is the master at finding cool meetups in Madison. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to play vintage baseball like the old-school hall of fame legends, look no further than the Capital City Vintage Baseball Club. In 1865, the Capitol City Baseball Club became Madison’s official team. Today, you can don the vintage uniform, ditch the leather gloves and hit the dirt field for some old-school fun. The vintage league started this year and currently has around 50 active members. For more information, find the Capital City Vintage Baseball Club on meetup.com Chris Reese hosts the “My Move” segment with guest Sarah Reese Each week, Chris Reese talks to a local resident about their experience moving to Madison. This week, Sarah Reese, Chris’s wife joins the show. Chris and his wife moved to Madison from Tomah, Wisconsin, after Chris received a job promotion. Sarah said she was a little uneasy about moving to such a large city but quickly fell in love with the sense of community and endless places to explore with her family. Although she says she misses her parents back in Tomah, she cannot see herself living anywhere else. Sarah and her family connected to the community through their local church, as well as the local school. Sarah’s favorite places include the farmer’s market, Buck & Honey’s restaurant, and the Takumi Master Japanese Restaurant. Leah Roe is impacting military spouses and professionals through MAVAN Neil Mathweg invited Leah Roe to the I Love Madison Show to talk about her new startup, MAVAN or Military Affiliate Virtual Assistant Network. Leah said she had no intention of starting a business when she asked her sister to be her virtual assistant. Leah wanted to have a greater impact in her community through her work but realized she would need someone to help her handle all of the little details that seemed to take up all of her time each day. Leah’s sister, Anna is a Marine-Corps wife who was looking for an opportunity to advance her career and generate an additional income. The challenge of being a military spouse means moving your family every few years, often with no control over the destination. Corporations are hesitant to hire military spouses, due to the long onboarding processes and a high turnover rate. MAVAN hires military spouses with professional degrees and training to be virtual assistants for impact-driven professionals who are too busy to manage the details of daily operations. To hear more about how MAVAN is impacting families and businesses, listen to this episode of the I Love Madison Show! It’s time to get this party started...It’s time to launch the I Love Madison Show! Additionally, Neil talks about how hard it is for “trailing spouses,” the spouse who may not be working or is a stay at home mom, to connect to the local community. The purpose of “I love Madison” is to provide information on events, ways to connect, places to eat and needs in the community! Meet me in Madison I love Madison is more than just a podcast! Each month leaders from the community will host an event called Connect Madison. This 90-minute event is designed to connect people to each other and to the needs of the community. Attendees will have 30 minutes to network, followed by 30 minutes of talks based on the idea of “lifestyle.” After the lifestyle talks, there will be topic tables where community members can go to get more information on a particular subject or interest. The goal is to launch Connect Madison in January of 2018! Chris Sorensen from Realty Executives will host the “Meet-up of the Week,” a segment dedicated to highlighting interest groups that meet around the city. Neil Mathweg from Realty Executives will interview a community influencer, someone who is well-connected in Madison and can help other people to help people get connected. Three years and one glorious August day later, David found himself loving everything Madison has to offer. He said he loves how electric the place feels, the fact that people are always out and about doing things around the city. From participating in local sports leagues to trying new restaurants with friends, there is always a sense of energy and endless things to do. David initially connected in Madison through a local church connection and now says he would love to see the rest of his family move to Madison. When Chris asked what his favorite thing in Madison is, David said: “Just being here.” Cure adultitis with Neil Mathweg and Jason Kotecki Neil’s featured guest this week is Jason Kotecki, an artist, author, and speaker who started a company called Escape Adulthood. Neil and Jason talk about why finding “your tribe” is so important and how establishing these fun connections can improve the quality of your life. Jason also talks about a concept he calls a tinker project. The idea started after Jason realized he had not created any artwork for more than a year, so he set out to create 100 pieces of art. He didn’t focus on monetizing the project, he just created because he loves art.
