Jim McCloskey founded Centurion Ministries, the first organization devoted to exonerating wrongfully convicted prisoners serving life sentences or sentenced to death. Jim has helped free 65 innocent people. Today, Jim shares how his path was first one of destruction, followed by redemption and only then was he able to begin his amazing, life-giving work. Tune in for Jim's awe-inspiring reflections on the emotional responses from his clients. In hearing his telling of the laborious process of re-investigating cases, you will be reminded of the value of hope and sacrifice. Don't miss my conversation with this dedicated advocate for justice. SHOW NOTES: The National Registry of Exonerations tracks over 2,800 cases of individuals who were wrongly convicted of crimes, based on new evidence. Centurion Ministries has taken on over 80 cases, freeing 66 people. Collectively, these individuals have served 1,488 years in prison. When Jim's mother contracted polio in 1947, his father modeled the importance of responding to adversity with love, loyalty and devotion. Six hours a week, Jim would visit inmates at New Jersey's Trenton State Prison as a requirement for seminary. Do you believe I'm innocent? With no legal or investigative training, Jim worked for three years to free Jorge de los Santos from prison after presenting new evidence. Learn more about Centurion Ministries here. Jim Becher, co-founder of Augusto shares how he accidentally found his way into software, systems architecture and, now, building strategic partnerships. In this episode of the Augusto Health IT Podcast, Brian Anderson connects with Jim Becher, Director of Strategic Partnerships and co-founder of Augusto. Jim has a 20-year career focused on consulting, computer science, IT management, enterprise-scale systems architecture, and team leadership. The two travel through their careers, exploring different points when they both worked with each other and reflecting on their early interest in computers. Jim initially intended to be an accountant and, in fact, studied it for over a year in college. When Jim attended a job fair for summer internships, he noticed how long the lines were for the local accounting firms' tables. Tired of waiting, he walked toward the table with a really short line, which happened to be Crowe Chizek. Their team was offering a paid IT intern, and Jim took it. He never looked back from computer science. It was at Crowe that Jim and Brian first met, and quickly became friends as they played competitive soccer together for years. Somewhere along the way, Jim transitioned out of IT and into software. After a brief stint at an automotive company, Brian recruited Jim back to Crowe to build a data center. Later, Jim worked as an enterprise architect for Meijer, where he learned a ton about software development, security, deployment, and training teams, as well as managing data at scale. The two then shift into a discussion about Augusto's growth in cloud services and how Jim led Augusto in earning its AWS Select Partner Certification. By training, certifying, and documenting, Augusto's team members now speak the same language around AWS — and will build opportunities for their clients. Jim also has played an influential role in Augusto's recruiting and onboarding growth. He looks forward to continued opportunities to blend the things he loves — technology, relationships, and partnerships — to make something great. We thank Jim for his time on the podcast, and for everything he does to help delight our clients.

Train Your Brain to Master Focus, Learn Faster, Achieve Goals and Become Limitless! One of the world's leading experts in brain performance, mental fitness and memory improvement joins me on the show today. But, these credentials would have seemed downright impossible years ago. I say this because Jim Kwik experienced a severe childhood brain injury that left him with massive learning challenges so much so that he was told that he had a broken brain. Jim refused to let that label define him and gravitated heavily towards comic books to inspire him to achieve the unthinkable, unimaginable and impossible. When Jim was a freshman in college an unsung hero came into his life to help guide him on the path of personal development, growth, and reading. He then became enamored with teaching himself “how to learn” and the rest is history. Kwik then created strategies to dramatically enhance his cognitive performance and has since dedicated his life to helping others unleash their true genius and brainpower. He is CEO of Kwik Learning, the premiere online accelerated learning academy with students in 195 countries. His clients include Google, Virgin, Nike, Zappos, SpaceX, Wordpress, Cleveland Clinic, Caltech, Harvard and Singularity University. Subscribe to our official YouTube channel: OUR YOUTUBE Tonight on the Midnight Train we are exploring the world of the men in black. That's right we're going to be talking about the best Johnny Cash cover band to ever live!!! Oh wait… Wrong notes… We're actually talking about the real men in black tonight… Not the movies… The good stuff. So first off.. Let's get into what the men (and women) in black may be, then a few fun encounter stories! So many people have theories on who or what the men in black are. These theories range from the mundane to the insane! Government agents, to paranormal, to extraterrestrial and everything in between. Government agents seem to be the most prevalent answer to who the men in black are mostly because of the circumstances behind their appearances. If you don’t know already, the Men in Black, also known as the MIB, are men from a secret government organization aimed at keeping the existence of aliens away from the public eye. They are typically bald, going as far as even not having eyelashes. All are required to wear a plain black suit and black fedora as to keep from arousing suspicion and to intimidate individuals. They speak in a very monotoned nature and never reveal their true identity. Some have reported them calling each other by identification numbers rather than name. The Men in Black idea was accepted by many in the conspiracy-prone UFO community, partly because it seemed to legitimize the truth of eyewitness reports. No matter how outlandish their story, if an eyewitness credibly claimed that he or she had been threatened, the story seemed more plausible. After all, if the story was bogus, why would the government take an interest in the eyewitnesses, much less try to silence them? They typically come in groups of three barging into homes and brandishing a badge of some sort. It seems their only purpose is to rattle and disturb the target individual. The men seem to already know about the experience and even know details that the individual may not know. After initially questioning the individual on the experience, there is generally some sort of threat made to try and encourage the individual to keep quiet. Often they say that it is for the good of the individual, the country or even the world. Occasionally some have even claimed it was for the good of the universe. Most people believed that the MIB were just what they claimed to be, a secret branch of the air force. But it seems to some that as the strangeness of the sightings increased, people who experienced the MIB and other researchers started to think that this was much more than a simple branch of the government. Some started to notice that the MIB seemed to be distinctly...unhuman. Skin has been reported to look like plastic or rubber, and as stated earlier they seem to have no hair including eyelashes and eyebrows. They walk and move around in a clumsy manner and seem to struggle with basic human interaction. They seem to misuse common english words and display strange and disturbing body language. So with all this being said, where did all of these stories begin, well let's find out. The very first recorded brush with the MIB came in 1947 from one Harold Dahl. Dahl was fishing with his son and dog one day. He saw six strange looking and unidentified craft in the sky. As they stared into the sky, Dahl claims one of the craft dumped what he described as molten lava onto the boat. The substance landed directly on the dog killing it. Dahl and his son both suffered severe burns and had to be hospitalized. After Dahl recuperated he had the presence of mind to collect some of the material that was left on his boat after the incident. After this Dahl was greeted at his door one day bya man dressed all in black. He demanded Dahl forget everything that he witnessed. After several more visits Dahl was compelled to listen to what the man said and left it alone. THis is kinda crazy! The next and one of the most infamous accounts we are going to talk about is that of Albert Bender. This one gets pretty crazy, so buckle up passengers. Bender's experience is one of the earliest and most well documented accounts of the MIB. He was an office clerk and served a brief stint in the military during world war 2. After he returned he moved into his fathers attic. Bender would eventually be the founder of the first major civilian UFO investigation group, the International Flying Saucer Bureau or the IFSB. He brought the group to the forefront of the ufo investigation community with the publishing of a periodical The Space Review in 1952. Soon like minded individuals began contacting Bender from all over the world with their own UFO stories. As the IFSB became more and more popular, its popularity would ultimately be the thing that found it completely shut down! Bender would find himself on the receiving end of some very strange phenomena. It began with a strange phone call. Bender picked up the phone and as soon as he put it to his ear he felt strange, and a chill went up and down his spine. He repeatedly asked hello but no one responded but he knew someone was there. He felt dizzy and hung up and went and laid down. He sort of forgot about the call until a little later in the week when he decided to take in a movie. It was just past midnight when the movie ended and he began to walk home. He couldn't see anything but he could feel someone, or something, following him. He sped up to make it home and quietly made his way to his room. When he opened the door to the attic he was hit with an extremely foul odor, and that's not all. He was also presented with a floating orb in the middle of the room. H switched on the light and quickly the orb was gone. Bender was not sure what had just happened, was it just in his head, was it a strange paranormal phenomena? Well, he soon realized it couldn't have all been in his head. As he looked around the room he could see that there were wrecked items all over his attic room. His files were all over the floor, laid out as if someone had been looking through them all looking for some sort of information. While this incident was shocking an unsettling Bender kept pushing forward with his work with the IFSB. A few weeks later he yet again had a strange incident at the movie theater. He was sitting in seat and had the feeling that someone was staring at him, but upon looking around the theater he couldn't see anyone particularly looking in his direction. Then as he continued to look around he was shocked to turn back around and see a man, dressed all in black, suddenly occupying the empty seat next to him. It was as if the man just popped into existence. His appearance was just as strange as his arrival. He had a long black trench coat, black fedora, and most strangely his eyes seemed to glow unnaturally in the darkness. As with the phone call and the last theater experience, Bender began to feel sick. He closed his eyes as the room began to spin. When he opened his eyes again the strange man was gone. He tried to rationalize the experience any way he could and get back to watching the movie. Soon though he got the same feeling of being watched. He began to look around and soon to his dismay he found that the same strange man was sitting directly behind them. He was staring at Bender with anger in his eyes. After this he got up and headed home from the theater as he was thoroughly unsettled. For the next few months strange things would continue to happen. Then came the day the MIB contacted him. Bender decided to develop a “Contact day” with his followers and fellow members of the IFSB and the ufo community. He felt that contact could be made telepathically with the occupants of the UFOs if the whole of the group would set aside a specific time to all stop and continually repeat a memorized mantra directed towards the UFOs. he put out a bulletin in the space review asking all to join him on a specific day and time to do this. You can find the mantra online and oddly enough it was also the basis of a pop song that was ultimately made a hit song by the Carpenters. At any rate on the designated contact day at 6pmhe laid down in his quiet attic and started repeating the mantra. The third time he repeated the words he felt the temperature in the room drop and he developed a terrible headache. The headache was followed by a terrible sulfur smell. He says shortly after this he passed out. Next thing he knew there were flashing blue lights and his headache was worse. All of a sudden the headache was gone and he found himself floating above his own body. He was having an out of body experience! He began to hear a distinct voice. The voice stated: “we have been watching you, and your activities. Please be advised to discontinue delving into the mysteries of the universe. We will make an appearance if you disobey.” Where did this voice come from? This did not seem to be the response from an e.t. he was looking for. Bender mentally asked why whoever the voice was coming from was not friendly to him as he meant them no harm. The voice responded: “We have a special assignment and we must not be disturbed by your people!” Wow The entity left Bender with the following remark: “ We are among you and know your every move. Be advised we are here on your earth.” After this he opened his eyes and was back in his body. In that moment he could have sworn he saw a figure dressed all in blck in the corner of the room. As he gathered himself he saw nothing though. Was it just a crazy dream, maybe but there was something about this incident he couldn't shake no matter what he did. Over the next few days he became physically ill and could not sleep. It was as if something was sucking his lifesource out of him. He wrote everything down and locked it in his safe until he could figure out what to do.He eventually decided to publish the incident in The Space Review. He went to get the letter he had written detailing his incident from the safe but it was gone! There was that same strange sulfur smell emanating from the safe ! He couldn't figure out what was going on, but he would soon get his answer! A week or so later he had the same sort of incident he had before. He saw the blue flashing lights and ended up floating above his body again. This time though he was more aware and could look around the room. As he did he saw three figures dressed all in black wearing fedoras emerged from the darkness. One of them spoke to him and said the following: “You have dedicated yourself to the solution of the strange problem of unidentified objects in your atmosphere. Your interest is deep and sincere, and you have devoted many hours to it. We also know that such interest and determination may lead to something that could bring you harm. We also know that you are a very good contact for us on your planet earth. You are an average person and we know that anything we tell you will not be believed by anyone you might tell. You are not a person of great renown on your planet , therefore we have nothing to fear at present. We have a purposefor being here and we will be here for some time yet. We must not be disturbed in our ultimate goal. As you see us here we are not in our natural form. We have found it necessary to take on the form of your people while we are here. This is mainly used as a means of returning here without being detected by anyone. We have made numerous contacts on earth with craft and at present we have craft hidden on your planet. We have gone to great extremes at times to frighten off your earths people and it has resulted in their deaths. We Have also found it necessary to carry off earth people to use their bodies to disguise our own! We wish to keep in touch with you and tell you many things as one day you will write about this and we are certain no one will believe you, but you will be much wiser than anyone else on your panet. You will know what is out there in space and you will know what the future holds for your mankind. You will see all three of us again, but we will not tell you our names as they mean nothing to you. Refer to us as numbers 1,2,and 3. We will answer according to number. We will leave you with a small piece of metal similar to your coins. It is to be kept in a secure place of your own. We wish to have you come with us at a time to be announced soon. “ Bender then woke up and found himself clutching a strange piece of cold metal. This made it hard for Bender to believe that this was just a sort of dream. After this incident Bender seemingly went from a man hellbent of proving the existence of UFOs to a man who wanted nothing to do with them! His colleagues noticed this change and everyone thought it was strange to say the least. All Bender would tell everyone was that he was visited by three men of authority who convinced him it would be best to shut down the IFSB. Without giving any other explanation or reason, Bender tendered his resignation as head of the IFSB. Author Grey Barker wrote a book about Benders experiences and the last days of the IFSB titled “They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers”. It was Barker who was the first to put forth the theory that there was a secret organization actively trying to silence those who had experienced anything having to do with UFOs. As Barker continued to dig into what had happened to Bender, he became convinced that the government knew much more than was ever let on. He even became convinced that the government may have cut some kind of deal with ETs. He placed the blame so to speak for these theories on the shoulders of Dwight D Eisenhower! This timeline is interesting to conspiracy theorists because at this time, eisenhower was in the middle of his first term as president and if you keep up with your alien conspiracy theories like we do, you'd know that it is claimed that Eisenhower signed an official treaty with an extraterrestrial civilization at this exact time! Barker was one of the first to bring this theory out to the mainstream. While this may all seem crazy just maybe it's not as crazy as you might think! After Barker started talking about his theories and Eisenhower, he would soon get his own visit from the MIB!! According to Barker a man dressed all in black showed up at his door with one of Barkers brand new business cards demanding to know what the card was all about. The card identified Barker as chief investigator for the now defunct IFSB. After Barker gave the man his explanation, the man told him that this card was found on a man that was admitted to a local hospital. The man had no identification on him, only the business card. The man claimed he was following the business card as a lead to find out who the man was. Barker told the man he did not know the john doe. The man in black seemed to accept this answer and left his office. It dawned on Barked that it would be virtually impossible for an unknown man to have his business card as they had only been printed a couple days earlier and he had not given but a few out. This made it hard for Barker to swallow the excuse the man gave to be there. At this time even though the US branch of the IFSB was shut down, the Australian and British branches had chosen to forge ahead. The director of the Australian branch, Edgar Gerald, would be the next to experience the MIB. Soon after Bender resigned, Gerald began to see a black Cadillac routinely parked outside of his office. Soon he would see the car more often with a strange pair of men dressed all in black sitting inside. It seemed everytime he looked out of his window, these men were staring back at him. He began to receive strange phone calls shortly after the car started showing up. He knew that the two were connected. He then started experiencing harassment in the form of..well...poltergeist activity! He would hear strange unexplained knocking sounds in and around his home. Household items began to disappear and reappear in strange places. This strangeness continued for the next few weeks until it entered into the realm of physical violence. Gerald was pushed down the stairs by an unseen force. This occurred in public at a popular department store. After this incident Gerald became a believer in the fact there was a campaign to silence those that sought to expose information about UFOs and resigned his post at he Australian branch of theIFSB. Bender and Gerald had frequent conversation and it is thought that Bender let Gerald in on more of his secrets than anyone else. This led many to speculate that the MIB went after the next man up in the chain of knowledge. While Barker had changed his mind on the validity of Benders claims of the more paranormal aspects of his story, he still believed the MIB to be just a strange branch of the US government. But many would speculate that Geralds experience thousands of miles away would lend credit to the theory that the agency was more than just something from this planet. So are the MIB simply humans working for the government? Aliens masquerading as humans? Humans masquerading as aliens? To those who have experienced these men and women, that is one of the most frustrating questions. Cynthia Appleton was a british housewife with no previous interest in the paranormal. Her tale began on November 16 1957. She walked into her living room and felt an immense feeling of oppression. Cynthia watched as an intense illumination filled her home. She then experienced the phenomena of missing time. She looked at her clock and noticed it was an hour later than she remembered yet she had no memory of what had transpired in that hour. Had she been daydreaming for an hour? She didn't know how else to explain it but two days later she experienced another incident. As she went upstairs to check on her sleeping child, she stopped to admire the strange color the sky had become. At that time she felt the same feeling she felt two days earlier. She then heard a strange high pitched humming sound that seemed to come from everywhere all at once. The sound intensified and it felt like it was vibrating through her body. She said the vibration became so intense she felt as if her body would be torn apart. Then, just as quickly as it started, then phenomena ended. She then noticed a haze swirling around the room until it started to pixelate. All of a sudden a holographic projection snapped in to focus of a strange man. The man was described as nordic looking and wearing a spacesuit which would resemble those of the Apollo missions even though the Apollo missions were years away. Cynthia was terrified but the being repeatedly told her to not be afraid in her own head. And after a minute she found she was calm and not afraid. The being informed Cynthia that it came from a planet called Gharnasvarn. The man then drew a holographic screen out of thin air to show her pictures of his planet and people. Shortly after this incident the man would return with two others, notas a holographic projection, but in a black Cadillac. The three showed up and when Cynthia answered the door she saw them dressed in all black attire. The nordic looking visitor was now there in person and dressed in full MIB garb right down to the fedora! From February to August of 1958 there were frequent visits that took on a more decidedly MIB feel to them. During the course of one visit, one of the men told her he'd been hurt and showed Cynthia his finger which appeared to be badly burned. He asked Cynthia for only a glass of warm water. She brought him the water and he proceeded to dip his finger into the bowl then squeeze some sort of gel on his skin and it was instantly healed. The trio then left the house. Cynthia then noticed that the man had left a piece of skin in the bowl of water. She gathered the piece of skin and the artifact was sent for testing. The skin was deemed not to be human but it closely resembled that of a pig. Later , when it was found that human and pig DNA were very similar, some would speculate that the skin was actually grown in a lab. The skin tissue contained proteins similar to those used to grow skin in petri dishes. This led to speculation that the MIB are not natural born human beings but clones grown in a lab!! That's a crazy ass tale to say the least! If you are into aliens and spacemen you undoubtedly know the story of the Solway Firth spaceman. But what a lot of people don't know ist that the Solway Firth incident also spawned a MIB meeting! On May 24, 1964 Jim Templeton, a firefighter from Carlisle, Cumberland, took three pictures of his daughter on a trip to Burgh Marsh. There was nobody else in the area except two old women sitting in a parked car at the far end of the marsh. When he went to get the pictures the clerk who gave him his photos back made a remark about how the pictures were great but that it was a shame that one of the best ones was ruined by the man in the background wearing a spacesuit . He pulled out the pictures and was shocked to see that what the clerk had said was indeed true. He saw the picture of his daughter with what truly looked like a man in a space suit right behind her looking right at the camera. Jim was confused and alarmed so he went to the police station to see if they could clear this up. The police were baffled as well. The photo was sent to a lab where it was determined that the photo did not contain any double exposure or any kind of a superimposed photo. The man in the image was indeed there in real life when the picture was taken. Theories began to pour in. Many claimed that the individual was not detectable by the human eye because it was popping in out of dimensional space so fast that it was only detectable by the split second timing of Jims camera shutter. After the story gained traction and speculation ran wild, the MIB made a visit. Later that summer they received a phone call from a man saying he had some questions about the photo and was interested in investigating the incident. Jim was interested in getting to the bottom of the incident and agreed to talk to the man. A couple days later a black car pulled up to Jim's house and two men dressed all in black came to the door. They were polite at first but as the conversation went on the men seemed to become irritated and were demanding that jim get into their car and take them to the spot where the incident happened. He agreed and got into the car with the men. When they got to the spot the MIB started grilling Jim about every detail of the day. They even asked about seemingly menial details such as exact weather conditions and even what wildlife was present at the time of the photo. They seemed to be specifically interested in the behavior of any cows and sheep at the scene. The men then essentially accused Jim of lying when they started to continuously ask him who the man in the photo really was. The men repeatedly demanded to know where the man he collaborated with on the photo was. When Jim answered that he had no idea who or what the man was, the men eventually looked at one another and just shrugged and the men turned and walked back to the car. Jim watched as the men got into the, dumbfounded at what had just transpired, and realized the men were about to leave him. He shouted after the men and jogged towards the car but the two men just took off at a high rate of speed leaving Jim there by himself. Jim then had to walk several miles back home by himself. On august 3rd 1965 Rex Hefflin was running the road as a California highway inspector. He was concerned that a tree had fallen in front of a railway crossing sign. Hefflin was afraid people would not slow down and use caution so he radioed to dispatch to have them send a tree removal crew. When he tried to send his message he realized the airwaves were dead. He had thought this was a temporary issue so he tried again. Just then he noticed something out of the corner of his eye. When he turned to look he saw an unidentified object moving across the sky in his direction. It was very close to him yet it made no sound. He estimated that this floating skyscraper, as he called it, was about 150 ft. in length. He quickly snapped three photos of the craft before it left his field of vision. Many say these photos were the best detailed close up photos of a UFO ever taken. The pictures showed detailed closeups of complex machinery on the bottom of the craft as well as a searchlight shining down onto the road. All of these things would have been pretty hard to hoax back in 65. Hefflin himself was actually not that impressed with the photos as he thought that what he had seen was just some as yet unknown military or government craft. His friends however did not share this view and convinced Hefflin to take the photos to the papers. Once the photos were out for all to see Hefflins life began to change. Soon he was being bombarded by UFO researchers asking what he'd seen. Then he had to deal with officials from local military bases asking to examine the pictures. After seeing the pictures the military officials handed them back to Hefflin, but this would not be the last “government official” Hefflin would encounter. Soon after the military brass examined the photos, Hefflin was approached by a man claiming to be from the North American Air Defense Command or NORAD. The man was dressed typically of the MIB and flashed some sort of official lookin badge. The man claimed he needed to borrow the pictures for study. Since the other military officials had returned them, he didn't hesitate to loan them to the man. After several weeks of no contact or word on when he would get his pictures back, he contacted NORAD. When he called though, he was guaranteed no representative of theirs had visited Hefflin. They told him that in fact they were not responsible for the evaluation of UFOs and therefore would have no need to collect pictures of UFOS. Hefflin then realized the man who took his photos was an imposter. But who was he and where was he from? Since this incident , through the freedom of information act, there have been several memos uncovered that showed that the US government was just as confused and interested in the MIB tale and were actively seeking to unmask the imposter. So much so that an official memo from the Air Force was titled Impersonation Of Air Force Officers. This memo showed that the Air Force did not know who this person was and that they were concerned that he passed himself off as a NORAD official. The memo mentions Heflins encounter and another subsequent incident involving a man dressed in fatigues intimidating civilians and even police officers that had witnessed a UFO. The imposter informed them that they did not see what they thought they saw and that they should not speak of the incident. They did not know the identity of these imposters. The memo implored any Air Force personnel that witness this type of activity or hear others talk about it, to send all reports to the Office of Special Investigation, or the OSI. That same year the University of Colorado began the conden report led by Edward Conden. It sought to investigate the best information from the Air Force's own investigations of UFOs, project Bluebook. Hefflin’s UFO sighting and subsequent meeting with the MIB would be one of many subjects in the conden report. In fact one investigator who was charged with interviewing Hefflin, says that his incident was one of the top in the report. Oddly enough the MIB seemed to take notice of the new attention as well. In the middle of the Conden investigation the MIB paid Hefflin a second visit. This time they pulled up in a pitch black vehicle, then two men in Air Force uniforms got out. The two men immediately began hounding him about recent UFO sightings in the are and also oddly brought up people missing in UFO incidents at the Bermuda Triangle. The two men entered his home and Hefflin could feel a strange charge in the air and his radio started crackling and popping. Hefflin says that while the two men did not directly threaten him, he recalls that their whole demeanor was threatening. And while they continually discussed UFO incidents that were not directly related to him, he says they became increasingly agitated and angry. As they went on, Hefflin could not get a word in. He insisted on knowing the full name and ranks of the men in his house. He was actually surprised when the two men divulged to him that info. When he contacted the Air Force they could find nobody matching the names and ranks the two men had given. Next up we are gonna discuss John Keel. Keel was the first person to use the term Men In Black. Keels association with the men in black began on december 15th 1966. A group of West Virginia teens were hanging out in an area called the TNT area. Parked in the spot they were hanging out being typical teenagers when they spotted something in the rearview mirror. They saw an entity standing 7 ft tall. It had moth-like wings wrapped around its body and eyes that glowed red through the darkness. The driver slammed on the gas and took off, driving to the police station to report what they had seen. The deputy who took the report, while weary of entering such details into an official police report, knew these kids well and knew they were not the sort to make up stories for no reason. He could also tell that these kids were frightened out of their minds. The deputy offered to go back to the sight with the kids but their search turned up nothing. The next morning similar reports were popping up all over the area. The locals had also already come up with a name for the beast, you guessed it..they dubbed it..The Mothman! Keel became famous for reporting these incidents with the mothman. It was also while investigating and reporting on the Mothman that Keel came face to face with the MIB. Oddly enough before he would hear of the Men in black, Keel would get reports of a Woman n Black. The woman would show up at witnesses houses holding a clipboard and would introduce herself as an associate of keels and badger the witnesses about ufos and other paranormal happenings. Just like the MIB she seemed to have an uncanny knowledge of the witnesses' lives and would make them uneasy by revealing details of their health and lifestyle. Several people wrote to Keel asking him to please stop sending his secretary around to question them. Keel informed them that he certainly had no secretary or anyone else working for him and that he was extremely confused by the situation. The experiences with this WIB were accompanied by the typical sightings of the black Cadillacs of the MIB which were seen roaming the streets at all hours of the day. Men dressed all in black would park the cars and get out and canvas the area. They claimed to be census takers, various types of federal employees, and social workers. One popular tactic of these MIB was to pound on someone's door only to ask for a glass of water, not to discuss the Mothman at all. As the sightings of the mothman became more frequent so did the MIB sightings and incidents. The MIB seemed to become increasingly hostile in their approach. One highschool student was even the target of a kidnapping by these MIB. She got away but later that evening a note slipped under her door that read “be careful girl, i can get you yet”. As the principal investigator of the mothman incidents, Keel became a target for the MIB as well. After leaving West Virginia, the MIB followed him back to New York. Keel often mentioned MIB types following him around Manhattan. He once received a phone call asking him to meet and discuss his work. When he went to Long island the MIB told him to end his inquest into the mothman or something bad would happen to him. Keel would eventually come into contact with an MIB who claimed his name was Apole. He tld Keel that he was trapped in time and forced to jump about from the past to the future. This another layer of the MIB enigma. Keel would later claim that he believed the MIB were a whole other level of entity from somewhere just beyond our perception. These beings he termed Ultra terrestrials. While searching to uncover the mystery of what was happening in West Virginia, keels seems to have deepened it more. So we wanted to give you sort of the history...the beginnings of the MIB phenomena before we got too far gone. The previous timeline is essentially the beginnings of the MIB lore until they officially got their name. Since Keel coined the term and had his own crazy story with the MIB sightings and visits have continued to modern day. Next we have a couple more crazy tales of more recent MIB encounters! Paul Miller was returning home after a hunting trip when they saw a “luminous” disc in the sky. The disc landed in an empty field, and two humanoids emerged from the craft. Miller fired his gun at them, and believed to have injured one, when he fled down a rural road in his car. However, in that moment, he realized he had lost time. It was almost three hours later than when he first encountered the craft. He shrugged it off, and went back to his Air Force job the next day. However, upon entering work, he was immediately confronted by three men in black suits. They told him that they “had his file.” Despite having told nobody about the event, the men said that they “knew all about it” and mentioned that the encounter would be best forgotten. Paul says: They seemed to know everything about me; where I worked, my name, everything else,” Miller said. They also asked questions about his experiences as if they already knew the answers. Miller, terrified, did not come forward about his experience until years later. Danny Gordon was a radio personality who became interested in a flurry of Wythe County UFO sightings. Multiple people across the county claimed to have seen bizarre objects in the sky, and Gordon decided to investigate. Gordon became obsessed with getting photos of the objects, including one time where an entire school bus of students saw the UFOs flying over a shopping mall as Gordon took photos. Eventually, Gordon snapped a few photos at extremely close range that allegedly verified they were not of this world. However, strange things began happening to Gordon. He received a phone call from a man who claimed to be “ex-military” and warned him that his research could “cost him everything” and urged him to stop for “his family’s sake.” Gordon was also “interviewed” by two men in black suits who claimed to work for a magazine publication. Not long after the interview, Gordon realized all his photos were missing. He contacted the magazine for information, and they claimed to have never heard of him, much less commissioned an article about him. Not long after, Gordon suffered a heart attack, and his doctor warned him that all the research and stress was jeopardizing his health. Gordon gave up the story, and was never bothered again. Dr. Herbert Hopkins was working as a consultant on a UFO case in Maine. One evening he received a phone call from someone purporting to be an activist in the UFO community, asking him if he could visit Hopkins to discuss the case. Only minutes later, the man arrived. The man was wearing a black suit and black tie, and had very unusual facial appearances, with no hair or eyebrows, and an extremely pale figure. Hopkins’ dog began barking erratically the minute the man entered the home. After the bizarre visitor was finished questioning him about the UFO case, the visit got even stranger. Here’s how it went according to the website The Night Sky: "The Man in Black] informed Hopkins that there were two coins in Hopkins’ pocket (which was correct) and asked him to remove one. Hopkins complied and held the coin, a shiny new penny, in the palm of his hand. The MIB told Hopkins to watch the coin closely. After a few moments the coin took on a “silvery” appearance and then appeared to be going out of focus. It then began to fade and, eventually, disappeared altogether. The MIB informed Hopkins that the coin would never be seen ‘on this plane’ again. He then inquired as to whether Hopkins was familiar with alleged UFO abductee Barney Hill. Hopkins replied that he had heard of Hill, but was under the impression that he had died in the not too distant past. The MIB informed Hopkins that was correct. “Barney didn’t have a heart,” said the MIB, “just like you no longer have a coin.” (It should be noted that Barney Hill actually died of a cerebral hemorrhage.) The MIB then gently suggested that Hopkins destroy any material he had related to the UFO case." Hopkins, extremely shaken by the encounter, followed the advice of the man and burned all the files he had related to the case. While he had repeated phone troubles after (the phone company said his line had been tampered with, maybe to tap it?) he never saw the man again. And here's a final fun one from none other than Dan Akroyd!!! In 2002, Aykroyd was working on a documentary for the SciFi channel with a number of recognized names in the world of ufology, including Linda Moulton Howe, Steven Greer, and John Mack. They had filmed eight episodes of a series that was close to airing. One day after filming, Aykroyd stepped outside for a cigarette and answered a phone call from Britney Spears who wanted to talk about an upcoming SNL episode. While he was on the phone he said he turned and looked out onto 42nd street in New York and noticed a black SUV with a tall man dressed in black giving him a dirty look. Aykroyd turned away, but then did a double-take within a matter of a second and the car had vanished. Two hours later, Aykroyd and the cast were told the show had been cancelled completely and would never air. To this day they were never given a reason why. So what the fuck are the men in black? Humans, aliens, interdimensional beings, clones made in a lab,... Who knows. Are they even real? Who knows, but there are thought people out there who are sure they do exist because they've come face to ugly face with them. Even freaking Dan Aykroyd for crying out loud. Some folklorists, however, claim that the whole idea of “Men in Black” is itself a form of mass panic or of “psychological drama” due to suggestibility and a willingness to believe. Others, however, insist the Men in Black are part of a real government agency designed to prevent the public from learning “the truth about UFOs.” They also insist that their experiences are real and that anyone who thinks they’re crazy is merely a tool of government propaganda and manipulation. So what do you all think? Are they real? In this episode I was delighted to speak to a legal tech superstar Jim Wagner, who has been innovating in the sector for 20 years. Having trained in law, Jim practiced as a lawyer for ten years before transitioning to the business side of things. Jim tells us about his journey into Seal (now part of DocuSign Agreement Cloud), and how AI and machine learning are really beginning to transform aspects of the inhouse lawyer's ability to do their roles particularly in relation to analysing corporate contracts. When Jim became aware of Seal, it was focused exclusively on the corporate market - so Jim and his team created accelerators - collections of AI models that solve for things like procurement and compliance, or ISDA or NDAs. Even though companies like Seal have been doing this now for 10 years, the reality is, Artificial Intelligence is still on a maturity curve and there's a lot of room left on that maturity curve. Jim describes certain aspects of AI, take mergers and acquisitions, where there are mature AI models out there for identifying change and control or identifying assignment rights and those sorts of things. But once you getting into larger, more complex agreements, master service agreements, master hosting agreements, licensing agreements, data processing adenda, et cetera, delivering AI value across those complex agreements is going to be a journey.Jim encourages his clients to think of AI as 'a tremendous assist'. He argues why on earth would you undertake the analysis or review of an agreement without having that assist? "Because we're going to read so many critical parts of the document, and candidly, we're going to unearth a lot more with AI than, than might meet the human eye. And so, so there's a huge, huge assist that's available." Jim teaches a class where he went to law school. He still stays involved in that community. And a big part of what he talks about with his students is ethics. Ten years ago they'd probably have considered what are the ethical implications if you use AI? And now they turn the debate on its head and say, "what are the ethical implications from not using AI?". He goes on to say: "We know you use spellcheck . We know you use red line. We know you want to have searchable text , right? You're going to want to use AI?".Jim feels it no longer makes any sense to undertake the process without the AI, but you do need to recognize that it's an assist. It's not full automation, certainly not full replacement for human review, at least for reviewing an entire agreement end-to-end, word for word on, on every single comma and period that's there.Tune in to hear more.

He listed over 150 properties his second year and devoured every resource he could get his hands on. Since then, his mentality and focus on relationships have not changed. Speak English Now Podcast: Learn English | Speak English without grammar.
Hello, everybody! I am Georgiana founder of SpeakEnglishPodcast.com. My mission is to help you to speak English fluently. In this episode: •I'll be discussing some more about some of the most common phrasal verbs. •After that, you'll be able to practice your grammar skills with an interesting Point of View lesson. Ok, let's continue with the phrasal verbs. A phrasal verb is just a verb and a particle. For example, "get in." If you haven't checked out the first episode about phrasal verbs, please do it. Remember, you only need to learn the most frequently used phrasal verbs. Also, instead of learning all the different meanings of each phrasal verb, simply learn one or two common meanings. Ok, let's get started! Today, we'll play a bit with "get." Get along / get on Do you have friends? Then, you'll probably use this phrasal verb. It means to like each other. For example: I'm surprised how well I get along with my mother-in-law. The older and younger members get along well. I get along very well with foreign people. You can also use "get on" instead of "get along." It's exactly the same meaning. For example: I'm surprised how well I get on with my mother-in-law. The older and younger members get on well. I get on very well with foreign people. Go back / Come back / Get back Sometimes these phrasal verbs are confusing for the English students. First, let's see the difference between 'go' and 'come.' An example: Please, Jim, come here. I need to talk to you. Please, Jim, go to the supermarket to buy some food. As you can see, when Jim approaches you, he "comes." When Jim doesn't approach you and goes somewhere else, he "goes." Now let's add the word 'back': Jim, come back from the supermarket. I've just ordered a pizza. In this first example, Jim is at the supermarket and returns to where he was before. Another example: Tomorrow, Jim will have to go back to the supermarket to buy more food. In the second example, Jim goes to the supermarket again. He went the day before. As you can see, adding the word 'back' emphasizes the idea that you go again to a place or you come again from a place. So, how about "get back"? It has virtually the same meaning. Here’s not so important if you go or if you come. It sounds a bit more informal. We didn't get back from the movies until midnight. Call me when you get back. I visited my uncle in France two years ago, and I can't wait to get back! (end of the extract) read the transcript here: speakenglishpodcast.com

Welcome back! On this episode of the Cameron-Brooks podcast, I interview Jim Marek. Jim spent over 7 years as a USMC Infantry officer before transitioning to Corporate America. When Jim came to his Career Conference in January 2016, he received multiple employment offers in roles focused in Consulting and Professional Sales. He ultimately chose to start his business career at H-P Enterprises. Since making his transition, Jim has worked at three different companies so the thrust of this conversation is focused on career management. Our conversation begins discussing Professional Sales and why JMOs have a misconception about this career field. Jim likens it to being to an Infantry Platoon Commander or the owner of a battle space. As a Sales Professional he made sure to understand how his customers go to market, so whatever he sold would help them cut costs or drive revenue. Jim worked to understand the financial, contracting, legal, marketing, delivery, product development and operations - basically every aspect of his customers business. We also hit on the topics of choosing a geographic location, getting an MBA while working and going through a merger with another company before focusing on navigating your business career. From there, we get to the heart of the discussion which is managing your own career. After delivering results in his initial role, Jim saw an opportunity at a different company to get to the next professional level and took the leap. I think that sometimes when people go multiple companies is a short amount of time they are viewed as indecisive. Jim is not indecisive - he is focused on growing his business career and experience. Be sure to tune in as Jim shares some interesting advice in regards to career management. This episode was a little bit different to sport but you can still relate everything from Jim's story back to something you're trying to achieve. When Jim was out of money taking a risk moving to Australia he had to persevere and work hard to make a career out of his dream. If its something you really want to do opportunities will arise its funny how the universe works as for Jim there was a mushroom farm just down the road from where he was living and when there was only a few in Australia at the time. So if you are working hard and following your dream job or passion, focus on that, stay patient as the money and rewards will be a result of the hard work and love your putting into that. This episode is from the vault and was first released March 26, 2018. Have you thought about creating your own Adventure in Retirement? This podcast episode falls under the 2nd pillar, Significant Other (Be adventurous with your spouse), in the Six Pillars of Retirement. Jim Palmer is a marketing and business building expert and in-demand coach. He is the founder of the Dream Biz Academy and Dream Business Coaching and Mastermind Program. Jim is the host of Newsletter Guru TV, the hit weekly Web TV show watched by thousands of entrepreneurs and small business owners and he is also the host Stick Like Glue Radio, a weekly podcast based on Jim’s unique brand of smart marketing and business building strategies. Jim started thinking about and living his retirement lifestyle before retirement age. Instead of waiting for his retirement, he is living out a dream now while he continues to work. He and his wife sold their house and put the contents in storage. They are currently living on their boat, which they named Floating Home and traveling up and down the east coast. They are enjoying a more simple life. He has created a dream business where he works with clients only 3 days a week and travels the rest of the time. He hopes to continue working for many years, beyond typical retirement age and says it will be possible because he hasn’t worn himself out with a work that is unfulfilling. It's time for a big adventure in retirement! It was Jim's wife's idea to live on a boat, but it's Jim who is the “boat guy” as he grew up on boats. When Jim married his wife, they wanted to have their own boat. However, between work, raising four children, and maintaining a home, they never had the chance to buy one. Once their children got married and moved on, and Jim's wife Stephanie said she is done with her job, suddenly they were no longer “landlocked.” They spent a few years trying to decide what they would do and where they would live, They did get a small boat which was big enough to sleep on but not that big. Eventually, his wife suggested they live on a boat. Jim's initial thought was, “We will need a bigger boat.” Then their adventure in retirement began. They sold their house, found a bigger boat, and moved on April 15th, 2017. They initially agreed to an an18-month plan. First, they went to New England to see their daughter and grandkids. Then they went to Chesapeake Bay, which is their home port, and they will go to Florida for their first winter. So, at the time of this interview, they were almost a year into their adventure in retirement. How is it? They love it so much! Jim feels living on a boat is like an everyday vacation. It's very relaxing, and it is just a simple life. They are now talking about a 5-year plan to continue their retirement adventure on their boat. What is it like living on a boat? I know very little about boats and tend to think of it as somewhat similar to living in an RV. Jim and Stephanie's boat is 50 feet long and 14.5ft wide. It has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. It's a motor yacht with almost 1000 horsepower. Jim said they don't want to go on a camping in the waters, they want to feel comfortable. They wanted to have a separate space if they needed it so it isn't too cramped. We talked about all the amenities in Jim's boat and the maintenance and repair that goes along with it. It is quite fascinating! An interesting fact is that you don't have to have your captain's license. The fact that you own a boat and can drive it means you are a captain. Both he and his wife have taken courses through the Co...
Lafayette native Jim Gossen has been immersed in the seafood industry since the early 1970s when he began picking up and selling Gulf seafood out of the back of his pickup truck to source fresh seafood for Landry's Restaurants. His hands-on experience and relationship building over the past few decades have given Jim an up-close understanding of the challenges facing the fisherman who captain the seafood industry and what it will take to pass on the tools for business survival to the next generation of fisherman. His message is clear: the Gulf Seafood industry must have a unified voice and be innovative as it adapts to changing circumstances if it is to remain viable for future generations. In this episode of Discover Lafayette with Jan Swift, Jim Gossen shares his love of the seafood industry, provides an historical overview of how consumers' tastes and demand for seafood has evolved, and explains why he believes Louisiana's fisherman can successfully compete globally by focusing on the quality of their superior product as compared with other country's cheaper and inferior seafood offerings. Jim Gossen's dedication to the seafood industry led him to great success as a restauranteur, seafood processor, manufacturer and distributor of fresh Louisiana seafood. In the early days of his initial business, Creole Foods, Jim drove his own 18-wheeler to source and deliver shrimp and red snapper. Creole Foods quickly evolved into a successful business renamed Louisiana Foods, a global seafood endeavor that Jim sold to Sysco in 2012. He served as Chair of the board of Sysco until his recent retirement. Jim currently serves as Chair of the Gulf Seafood Foundation, which promotes Gulf seafood, tourism, and culture. He also owns Jimmy G's by the Houston airport and Louisiana Catering, an oil-related catering business. A recipient of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Gulf Guardian Award for his work in promoting the use and sale of by-catch (seafood such as Cobia or Triggerfish caught unintentionally while hauling in fishing nets that can be sold to restaurants), he has also been recognized by "My Table’s Legends of the Industry, Southern Living’s Heroes of the New South Awards, and is one of Cooking Light’s 20 Food Heroes in America. While today's restaurant menu typically offers salmon, crabcakes, and a variety of fish dishes, it wasn't always so. When Jim entered the distribution business in the early 1970's and moved to Houston, seafood was not a staple on menus. No one knew what Creole meant, no one knew what crawfish was. In fact, when Jim drove his fresh seafood offerings to Houston, he also carted along Community Coffee, Barq's Rootbeer, Camellia Red Beans, tasso, Veron's Andouille Sausage, and New Orleans' Leidenheimer French Bread, all of which were unknown commodities outside of Louisiana. They quickly became hits in the cowboy market of Houston and beyond.....as did Jim Gossen. At the age of 30, Jim Gossen on one of his trips to pick up food products along with fish, shrimp and oysters in Louisiana. Photo Gossen Archives Over the years, tastes have changed and the manner in which seafood is sourced has also changed dramatically. In the 1980s, restaurant patrons feasted on Speckled Trout and Redfish. Both of these fishes were made popular by Chef Paul Prudhomme and his "blackened" seafood dishes. No one could have imagined how fast the popularity of these dishes would take off worldwide and the fish became scarce due to high consumer demand. Limits were placed upon the catch of speckled trout and redfish and now they are only accessible by the recreational fishermen in the region. China and other countries, however, have been willing to step in and meet the demand for affordable and accessible seafood. "Our Gulf seafood industry has been forced to compete on price, It is time to stop competing on price and instead compete on quality." Jim Gossen Photo by Ed Lallo

A successful businessman was growing old and knew it was time to choose a successor to take over the business. Instead of choosing one of his Directors or his children, he decided to do something different. He brought all the young executives in his company together and said, "It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO and I have decided that it will be one of you." The young executives were shocked, but the boss continued. "I am going to give each of you a seed today - a very special one. I want you to plant the seed, water it and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the person whose plant I choose will be the next CEO" A man named Jim was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. When he got home, he excitedly told his wife the story. She helped him get a pot, soil, and compost for the seed and he planted it. Every day he would water it and check to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow from them. Jim kept checking his seed but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing. By now others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn't have a plant and he felt like a failure. Six months went by -- still nothing in Jim's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Jim didn't say anything to his colleagues, however, he just kept watering and fertilizing the soil - he so badly wanted to see the seed grow. A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought their plants to the CEO for inspection. Jim told his wife that he wasn't going to take an empty pot. But she asked him to be honest about what happened. Jim felt sick to his stomach, it was going to be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his wife was right. He took his empty pot to the boardroom. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful -- in all shapes and sizes. Jim put his empty pot on the floor and many of his colleagues laughed and felt sorry for him. When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives. Jim tried his best to hide in the back. "My, what great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown," he said. "Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!" All of a sudden, he spotted Jim at the back of the room with an empty pot. He ordered the Financial Director to bring him to the front. Jim was terrified. He thought, "The CEO knows I'm a failure. He will have me fired!" When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed - Jim told him the story. The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at him, and then announced to the young executives, "Behold your next Chief Executive Officer! His name is Jim." Jim couldn't believe it. He couldn't even grow his seed! "How could he be the new CEO?" the others asked. The CEO replied, "One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead - it was not possible for them to grow.”

Jim Clifton is the Chairman and CEO of Gallup, an American analytics and advisory company founded in 1935. Jim has been the CEO since 1988 and under his leadership Gallup has expanded from a predominantly US based company to a worldwide organization with 30 offices in 20 countries. Gallup is made up of 2,000 professionals plus 35,000 contract workers across 160 countries. Jim is also the co-author of a new book called It’s The Manager, which is based on data Gallup has collected from their largest study on the future of work. The book examines 52 discoveries found from that study that point to why managers are the biggest factor in your organization’s long-term success. From the Gallup study Jim and co-author Jim Harter found six things that have been done in the past that most organizations still seem to hold on to. These six things need to be changed inside of organizations immediately in order for organizations to stay relevant and successful in the future of work. One of these six changes Jim talks about is the shift from working solely for a paycheck to now the need for purpose and meaning at work. The things that employees want has changed over the last few decades. When Jim was starting out in the workplace in the 70s and 80s he says he wanted 40 hours a week and a fair paycheck out of work, that was it. His main dream and focus was on getting married, having kids, having a nice house, etc… But now with the new generations coming into the workplace they don’t have the same dreams and aspirations as Jim and his generation did. “My generation got married like 15 years earlier on average than this generation. We had a bunch of kids and we also owned our homes. But all of that means that when I went to work, I really wasn't concerned with what the mission or purpose was of the organization. I mean this is a striking difference, but now I'm staying with millennials because they're 40% of the workplace when they come to work. They're saying, my life now merges with the workplace, not with my family, and I need to know that if I'm going to spend all this time here, how does that fulfill that need? Because my job is much more a part of my life than any generation ever.” Another change that is pointed out in the book is the need for managers to focus on employee development instead of employee satisfaction. Jim says, while there is nothing wrong in providing perks for employees, it should not be the reason employees come to work. There’s been a rising trend in organizations believing that they need to provide ping pong tables, latte machines, nap pods, free lunch, etc...but employees want to have a real purpose behind the work that they are doing. Employees want to know that the managers are going to work on their strengths and help define a development plan and help them grow inside of the organization. As stated in the book, “When you have great managers who can maximize the potential of every team member, you have delivered on the new global will: a great job and a great life. That is the future of work”. What you will learn in this episode: What Jim’s first job was and how it changed his life The biggest changes Jim has seen in the workplace over the past few decades The difference between a coach and a manager Jim’s view on perks in the workplace Why organizations use workplace practices when there’s no data to support that they work A look at the research and findings for the book, It’s the Manager Contact Information: It’s The Manager on Amazon Jim Clifton on LinkedIn
Jim spent much of his life building a real estate empire on the West Coast. In the process he became a millionaire, profiled in newspapers and on television. But in 2007, when the recession hit, Jim lost his vast fortune. At 76, Jim is running a small resort in Lake Tahoe, working to slowly rebuild his finances, when he receives a mysterious call. The woman on the other end of the line asks for Jim by name. She introduces herself as Desiree and asks if Jim remembers her. He doesn't, but Desiree is unfazed, claiming to have met Jim at the resort while she was a guest. She wants to get to know him better and before the call ends, Desiree has arranged another trip to the resort to visit a flattered Jim. Desiree arrives with a business opportunity for Jim, who quickly realizes she thinks he's still wealthy. She's visibly disappointed to find that Jim's house is no longer a mansion but a renovated Airstream trailer. At every turn of the visit, Desiree finds a reason to ask Jim for money — she needs investors for a new business and money to pay a family member's mortgage — but Jim isn't in a position to lend or invest money. Desiree decides it's time to go home. When Jim returns from taking her to the airport, he has an uneasy feeling. He looks to make sure the checkbook the resort keeps to pay vendors is still there. It is, but the stash of cash he keeps in the same drawer, the little savings he has left, is gone. Jim immediately contacts the authorities, but Desiree, who will eventually come to be known as the “Sweetheart Swindler,” is just getting started.

Jim employed nearly 20 people inside and had dozens of sales reps all over the US, Canada, and Europe. Ultimately, Jim helped expand the company from virtually no significant revenue to a leading brand in the industry that has sold more than 50 million dollars of product since the mid 1990′s. When Jim was ready for a new adventure, he left the company as President and Chief Operating Officer. Jim decided he was ready for yet a bigger challenge and joined a leading premium incentive company as their National Key Accounts Manager. Jim represented major national brands for this $100 million a year premium incentive firm such as Toshiba, Sony, Nikon, Nautilus, Movado and others. The products were used to create various incentive programs for fortune 1,000 companies around the world. Jim’s experience has reached far and wide working with various products, retailers, manufactures, and factories. He knew it was time to help those that had a product in mind or ready for production. His goal was to teach others the process without unnecessary expense, time and red tape. That is how DeCavi Corp was born. As the founder of DeCavi Corp, Jim has helped thousands of inventors and start-ups learn how to get their products developed and sold to major retailers. Jim then merged his firm with the renowned Slingshot Product Development Group which employs a team of 35 engineers, designers, and marketing experts who help individual inventors and Fortune 500 firms alike. Both are recognized as leaders in the inventor product development and commercialization arena. Today, Jim continues to broaden his reach into the world of consumer products and has formed DeBetta Enterprises which is a private consultancy that coaches and advises inventors and entrepreneurs on everything from manufacturing to sales and marketing of consumer products. Jim also heads up the Retail Distribution arm of Kevin Harrington’s TV Goods corporation which today is fueled by the hit ABC reality show Shark Tank. Jim teaches inventors how to create sales and marketing strategies, understand the world of licensing, develop a product using CAD design, raising money to fund a business, and locating factories overseas to produce products. Jim is now reaching out to individuals who want to learn how to do it for themselves. Jim is a Professional Member of the United Inventors Association, a member of the Georgia Inventor’s Association, Rocky Mountain Inventors Association, and was the former co-host of the Launch Hour – a popular radio program for inventors and entrepreneurs. He is also the author of The Business of Inventing and has written hundreds of articles for industry publications, newspapers, and websites such as Inventor’s Digest, Georgia Magazine, and Entrepreneur Magazine. Jim also appears as a guest speaker for leading trade and consumer organizations, speaks at international conferences, and hosts forum and blog discussions on prominent invention and entrepreneurial websites.
Many of you are probably familiar with O. Henry’s love story called The Gift of the Magi. The story is about a young couple named Della and Jim who are very much in love with each other, but they are very poor. Each of them has one precious possession. Della has beautiful long hair. Jim has a gold watch that he received from his father. On the day before Christmas Della had exactly one dollar and eighty-seven cents with which to buy Jim a present. She wanted to express her love for him, so she sold her beautiful hair for twenty dollars. She used the money to buy a platinum fob for Jim’s watch. When Jim came home that night and saw Della’s shaved head, he was speechless. He handed her a gift-a set of expensive tortoise-shell combs with jeweled edges for her hair. He sold his watch to buy them for her. Each had given the other the most precious gift he or she had to give. This is a story of love so deep and so extravagant that it does not hold back or count the cost. The passage we heard from John’s Gospel is a story of a similar outpouring of extravagant love. Mary’s act reminds us that we are to give God our very best. It may be something simple and ordinary, but our efforts are our gift to Jesus. Do we have Mary’s sense of gratitude and love for Jesus? Do we really appreciate what He has done for us, what He has given us, and the promise of a glorious future because of Him?
SUMMARY: Jim Kaloutas, owner of Kaloutas Painting in New England. Jim immigrated to the USA from Greece with his family at a very young age. His father got a job with Jim’s entrepreneurial uncle as a painter, which exposed Jim to the painting industry early in his life. Jim went to college after high school only to drop out after one month of class. He felt that he wasn’t ready for college and didn’t have the discipline necessary, so he returned to what he knew: painting. He started the business with his father over thirty years ago, and while they did have sporadic arguments, it was a great partnership. Jim learned a lot from his father, but the most crucial thing passed down was his father’s work ethic. Jim says that people sometimes compliment him on his own work ethic, but he argues that his does not compare to that of his father’s. From startup in 1987, in took ten years to go from $0 to $1,000,000 in revenue, and then ten more years to increase revenue to $10,000,000. This year, Jim expects the business to generate over $20,000,000 in revenue. Jim shares what each of these stages of growth looked like in his company, as well as what he has learned along the way. One of the most important factors that Jim credits his success to is his employees and creating a great company culture that reflects his own values. --------------------- WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: The importance of a strong work ethic as an entrepreneur. Jim’s process for investing in himself and his employees. The hiring process Jim uses to hire people with values that align with his. How to keep your business efficient. The method Jim uses to help his employees realize their goals. --------------------- QUOTES: “The wake-up call was when we would do a job and we would actually make less than our employees. We didn’t know any better. We didn’t price it right.” “I always believe in investing in myself. It’s where I should spend most of my money… in the past seven to ten years I’ve realized ‘it’s not just me running this company; I should invest in my employees, too.’" “Being able to understand my values and start to define them in the early years was very helpful for me to realize [how to grow the business]. Then, it became easier and easier because I attracted people who were similar to me.” “’Could I ever become a level five leader?’ Have it not be about 'me'; have it be about the people and the organization. That’s what drives me now. I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by the people that I have on my team and watching them grow gives me more fulfillment than the money.” “Sometimes when I’m talking to the people that I work in the company, I can almost see their potential a little bit better than they can. I think sometimes they’re drawn to me. I say ‘listen, you have it. You need to start believing in yourself as much as I do.” --------------------- HIGHLIGHTS: [01:42] How did Jim get involved in painting? [02:32] When Jim first started, how did he generate leads? [04:11] How did Jim and his father continue to grow their business? [07:16] What are Jim’s process and habits for investing in himself? On this edition of Brandstorm, Dan Trzinski and Nancy Christopher talk about how to set up the charitable arm of a corporation with Neil Willenson, VP of Community Relations and co-founder of Hometown Heroes and Camp Reunite for Kapco Metal Stamping. About Neil WillensonWhile Neil studied Film and did some acting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, it was his work as a camp counselor at Camp Minikani and in the Poconos, where he would find his calling. Tucking kids into bed that summer after graduating, he would read the biography of Ryan White, a teenage hemophiliac infected with AIDS through blood transfusions. White would become the poster child for AIDS education and advocacy. Neil wanted the young campers to know that you can't catch AIDS from touching, hugging or kissing others with the disease. When he returned home, however, he read an article about an AIDS scare in his community. He called the mother featured in the article and found out that Dawn Wolfe had been infected by her husband. One of her kids was HIV positive; the other HIV negative. Neil knew he needed to do something about the AIDS scare, so he created Camp Heartland, a safe haven for kids with AIDS and HIV. That one week of camp turned into a 20-year career as executive director . When Neil met Jim Kacmarcik, the CEO of Kapco Metal Stamping, Jim was a generous contributor to Camp Heartland. Jim asked Neil to be the keynote speaker at the Kapco Charitable Challenge, an event that tested college students to pay it forward. Each group of students were given $1,000 to leverage and help people they did not know. Two of the groups picked the same family to help build an accessible home. Eleven years prior, the single mom had given birth to quadruplets. One child died at birth; two of the kids had cerebral palsy (CP). By age 11, the kids with CP had developed spiral muscular atrophy and just weeks later, the mother was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Neil called the casting director from ABC’s "Extreme Home Makeover" to get the cast and crew to build a wheelchair-accessible home for the family. Having done a similar story already, the reality show turned down Neil's request, so he went Jim Kacmarcik for help. Kacmarcik not only agreed, but rallied 1,000 volunteers to help build the home, which was documented in a one-hour special on NBC's "Dateline." Willenson and Kacmarcik became collaborators and friends. When Jim called Neil next, he wanted Neil to hook him up with a celebrity because he wanted to start a record label. During the meeting, Jim said he also want to buy a baseball team, do more philanthropy, and needed someone to help him. After 20 years of asking for money and seeing more than 100 children who came through Camp Heartland die, Neil was ready for a change. Four months later, Neil started at Kapco as the vice president of community relations. About Kapco Metal StampingFounded in 1972, Kapco is based in Grafton, Wis., and manufactures metal components for customers needing stamping, fabrication and welding. The company also owns the Lakeshore Chinooks, part of a collegiate summer baseball league, K-Nation Entertainment, Given Music Publishing in Nashville, and SpeedKore, an automotive company that outfits muscle cars with carbon fiber (as seen in the "Fast and Furious" series and "Jay Leno's Garage"). Most recently, the company has launched its Inspire America Speakers Bureau. Kapco's Philanthropic InitiativesThe focus of Kapco's philanthropic efforts is kids and families in need. Philanthropy is not a business strategy at Kapco, so the company does not require corporate logos to be included in any organization’s collateral. However, Kapco also has hybrid initiatives with its marketing department that do require corporate identity. Some examples include its annual Toy Drive and the Milwaukee Bucks Home Court Heroes program, which honors an individual or individuals who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to our community. Kapco has vetted more than 200 charities, meeting with board members and going through each organizations’ financials. While the company does write checks to charities, Neil and Jim prefer to partner with organizations, like Operation Dream, a group of African American males who mentor kids who don’t have fathers. Jim and Neil alternate making decisions about charitable giving, but employees can also have a say, and Neil has never turned down an employee who is dedicated to a cause. Also, every year, Kapco holds an employee raffle and the winner can choose from 30 to 40 vetted charities to give a donation. Jim and Neil are also co-founders of two charitable organizations: Camp Hometown Heroes for kids who have lost a parent serving our country; and Camp Reunite, which reunites imprisoned mothers at Taycheedah with their children for five hours at a time to learn about coping skills and violence prevention. Neil says a side benefit of Kapco's philanthropy is that, in some cases, attracts employees, who view Kapco as having a great culture. This is especially true for senior-level executives. Some of Kapco’s customers are also deeply involved in Kapco's charitable giving programs. Advice for Other CompaniesWith so many great charities at the local and national levels, Neil says companies need to hone in on what they want to support. Corporate leadership should set priorities and include volunteerism wherever possible. Companies should also consider anything that can mean a win for the business and involve employees. Neil cites two organizations that have excellent charitable giving programs. "Kohl's for Kids" not only allows groups of five or more of its employees to provide community service, but also pays the charitable organization $100 for each Kohl’s employee who serves. Direct Supply gives its employees 8 hours each year with pay to help a charity in need. Jim Rolston Jim Rolston’s abstract paintings are ferociously gorgeous explorations of color and form, while his deceptively simple statues are gentle and profound. Jim was a passionate artist and an energetic leader in St. Petersburg’s arts community. He created art throughout his life, while working a demanding job and raising a family. When Jim approached retirement, he went back to school and earned a degree in Visual Art from Eckerd College, to prepare himself to be a full-time artist. He was a prolific artist working at his peak and constantly exploring. In this conversation, recorded a few months before Jim Rolston unexpectedly passed away, he shares his thoughts on the energy of abstract art and the opposing tensions balanced in his work. He explains how deeply his artwork is influenced by the concept of yin and yang, and the Tao de Ching. Jim served on the board of the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance and was co-President of the Professional Association of Visual Artists, a group that Creative Pinellas recently welcomed to our Arts Business Incubator. He talks about the work PAVA is doing, the vital arts community in St. Petersburg and the studios he created in the burgeoning 600 Block and the Warehouse Arts District. His loss is deeply felt throughout the arts community. They are currently living on their boat, which is named Floating Home and traveling up and down the east coast. They are enjoying a more simple life. He has created a dream business where he works with clients only 3 days a week and travels the rest of the time. He hopes to continue working for many years, beyond typical retirement age and says it will be possible because he hasn’t worn himself out with work that is unfulfilling. It's time for a big adventure in retirement! It was Jim's wife's idea to live on a boat but it's Jim who is the “boat guy” as he grew up on boats. When Jim married his wife, they wanted to have their own boat. However, between work, raising four children, and maintaining a home they never had the chance to buy one. Jim's initial thought was “we're gonna need a bigger boat” Then their adventure in retirement began. They sold their house, found a bigger boat, and moved on April 15th, 2017. They initially agreed to an an18-month plan. First, they went to New England to see their daughter and grandkids. Then they went to Chesapeake Bay which is their home port, and they are going to go to Florida for their first winter. So, at the time of this interview, they were almost a year into their adventure in retirement. How is it? They love it so much! Jim feels living on a boat is like an everyday vacation. It's very relaxing and it is just a simple life. They are now talking about a 5-year plan to continue their retirement adventure on their boat. What is it like living on a boat? I personally, know very little about boats and tend to think of it as somewhat similar to living in an RV. Jim and Stephanie's boat is 50 feet long and 14.5ft wide. It has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. It's a motor yacht with almost 1000 horsepowers. Jim said they don't want to go on a camping in the waters, they want to feel comfortable. They wanted to have separate space if they need it so it isn't too cramped. We talked about all of the amenities in Jim's boat and the maintenance and repair that goes along with it. It is quite fascinating! An interesting fact is you don't have to have your captain's license. The fact that you own a boat and can drive it means you are a captain. Both he and his wife have taken courses through the Coast Guard. Jim's job is to drive the boat and do maintenance on the boat. His wife's job primarily is the navigator.
When Jim and Carolyn took on Dayspring's 2017 Front Porch challenge (to invite their neighbors over for a meal), they didn't have great success. However, 2018's challenge is different: SERVE your neighbor! Jim and Carolyn are determined to make that happen.

Key Links from this episode Essentials of Emergency Medicine The White Coat Investor website White Coat Investor book When Jim was an intern, he didn't know much about finance. His education started with this book Mutual Funds for Dummies Books Jim recommends as foundational reading to understand personal finance The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need The Millionaire Next Door The Coffeehouse Investor The Four Pillars of Investing White Coat Investor advice for a medical student Try to spend as little as possible. Every dollar you spend in medical school is going to be 3 dollars you pay back later This is they time you're expected to be poor. Be frugal Your specialty choice has a huge effect on your future financial life. Pick the one you will be able to work at the longest that makes you the happiest. Advice to a young doctor The year that matters most in your financial life is your first year as an attending physician. That year sets habits. In med school and residency, have a plan in place for your first 12 attending paychecks. In the first few years after residency, live the lifestyle of a resident while earning like an attending. This can lead to rapid savings and loan repayment Embrace the habit of saving Calculate your annual savings rate/what you're putting toward retirement. Amount of annual savings divided by gross income. That number should be around 20% Look at your purchases from the point of view, "Will this make me happy?" The is the essence of budgeting: attaching your values to how you spend your money Each month, review where your money is going. Is that where you want it to be going? If it's not, make some changes. Don't buy on credit. Spending your money on payments is not what you want to be doing Financial Advisors Most doctors want or need a good financial advisor The problem is that what we want is just to have a 'money guy' that takes care of all the money and we don't have to pay attention to it To make sure you're getting good advice at a fair price, you'll need at least a basic level of financial education (or at least get a second opinion) Be aware of the fees your advisor is charging. Expect at least 4 figure amounts Starting residency. Buy or rent? Buy a home when you are in a stable professional and social situation there are high transit costs. It costs about 15% of the value of the home to make the 'round trip in and out of the home.About 5% to get in and 10 % to get out. If you're not there long enough for the home's appreciation to make up for that 15% loss, you're probably going to come out behind Homes appreciate about 3% per year If you're in a 3 year recency, changes are you won't break even White Coat Investor recommends most residents NOT buy a home and rent New Attending. Buy or rent? There is a good chance you will change jobs in the first few years This is not the most stable professional time Make sure the job work for you before you buy a house Rent for the first 6-12 months You should still be living like a resident during this first year Buy a home when you are in a stable professional and social situation The "Point of Enough" If you don't define it, it will always seem like a number that's twice what you have Take how much you spend in a year and multiply it by 25. When you have that in assets, you have reached finically independence. Real estate investing Owning actual property is to the only way to do it. Other options include..... The easiest way is the REIT. Real Estate Investment Trust index fund. Syndicated real estate Pay Down Debt vs Invest in the Market Doing either one will increase your net worth (unless the market tanks) Focus on what percentage of your income is going toward building wealth rather than what compartment that wealth building is going into Student loans have a few negative aspects: You can't deduct the interest when you're an attending; student loans tend to have high interest rates. Try to get rid of student loan debt within 2-5 years after residency Jim's Ideas on Giving/Philanthropy Good for the soul Develops a stewardship mentality Giving money away sends a message to the subconscious that you have enough - you can give some away and still be OK It keeps you connected to the rest of the world It can make your portfolio more tax efficient
Today our expert guest is Jim Palmer, a serial entrepreneur, a marketing expert, and the host of both Dream Business Coach TV and the Dream Business Radio Podcast. Jim is also the acclaimed author of Just Say Yes: Create Your Dream Business and Live Your Dream Lifestyle, as well as a number of other books. Today, Jim is living happily with his wife on a boat just off of the coast of New England… but he wasn't always loving life. He ran up against some big obstacles along his journey. When Jim was 40-years-old, he fulfilled a goal when he became VP of Marketing at a training company – when he was 41, the position was eliminated, which turned into 15 months of unemployment (the first since he was 15-years-old). 12 months into his 15-month period of unemployment, Jim was diagnosed with Melanoma (a form of skin cancer). For three weeks, Jim didn't know what stage of Melanoma he had. There was a good chance that he would not be alive for more than five years – “That really gives you a lot of perspective.” When we have an experience where we may die, or we think we may die, it really puts one in a position to evaluate what matters. Jim was ultimately diagnosed with Stage 2 cancer and, at the moment, is cancer-free. However, ever since that experience, he has had an hourglass on his desk. “I look at it every day and it reminds me that the sand is running out. You can't stop it and you can't slow it down, and eventually the sand does run out for everybody.” Since then, Jim has just said yes. Just Say Yes: Create Your Dream Business and Live Your Dream Lifestyle If you want to do something big in your life, you have to overcome the What Ifs – you have to just say yes, and figure it out as you go along. Just Say Yes is a business book, but it's also very personal – and his stories can serve as an inspiration that helps you overcome the fear of an unknown future. When Jim's former foster brother turns up in L.A., it's not just to promote his business empire; he has a problem and he needs help. It turns out that Jim may trust Aaron just a little too much as he's brought into a swindle, and has to figure out the angle before it's too late! The chemistry on screen elevates this episode over a slightly illogical script, and the psychology of the action sequences give us a lot to talk about in our second half! Jim has a unique entrepreneurial experience moving from one family business to another. After growing up in one family business, he left and started on a new venture that would eventually turn into a first generation family business. In this episode, Jim talks about his work with Advance Sign Group, working with his immediate family, and how EO helped to shape some of his business decisions as he was getting his new company on track. Key Takeaways: [1:15] Jim shares his lifeline: Growing up, Jim had a good understanding of work ethic, and seeing how transformative the food service industry business was. After college, he went into the manufacturing side of the family business and was involved in several departments. [5:07] He had worked in the business for about 20 years when he realized that he really had an entrepreneurial spirit that he needed to explore (outside of the food service industry). While dabbling in other ventures, he secured Advanced Sign Group in April of 2001, which was a little more in his wheelhouse as a full manufacturing business. [9:29] Advanced Sign Group became a family business when Jim’s wife joined to help with the business operations while Jim focused on sales and building new relationships. When their son graduated from college, he came on in sales and wrote a business plan and they’ve set him up to eventually take over the business. Since their son got involved, they have quadrupled their size. [13:17] It was a process to make Advanced Signs a family business. When Jim’s wife joined the business, her talent was in project management. While Jim was more focused on gathering customers, pitching sales, and company maintenance, his wife served as the relationship manager for the account once the sale was made. It was very good teaming at the beginning. [16:33] When their son first came to him with the business plan, he wasn’t sure if it was out of desperation or genuine desire for being in the family business. As they grew their family business, it developed a little differently than when he was joining his family business. It’s truly a first-generation family business. [22:10] When Jim joined EO, his forum gave him an outlet that served as an advisory board as he worked on the business. EO was a tremendous help, especially when he first gotted started. [25:57] What do the next stages look like for Jim and his wife? They are in the middle of a ten-year plan, and they’ve been looking internally as individuals to see what drives and inspires them. Jim and his wife plan to travel, and they’ve also been deciding what kind of parents they want to be for their married children, and their future grandchildren. Jim has been talking with his own mom about how they want to shape this. [32:05] In regards to the business, they will be able to be present for the future due to successor and management team they have. They have also been implementing the EOS system. Over the last three years, they’ve been building up their personnel and management team to get the right people in place. [36:00] Sharing stories can serve as a release valve. When people are on the other side, it’s nice to see that they made it work. And if you’re in the middle of something, it can be helpful to share your story so you can garner some discussions around it. By sharing some of his story, Jim was able to solidify his stance on investing in risk for a reward. [47:34] This podcast is a great opportunity for people to share their stories, especially being able to put a story to the people you may meet at social events. Nine year old Jane Beaumont was tasked with looking after her siblings, seven year old Arnna and four year old Grant on a day trip to the beach. The children were in the middle of their summer break, and on January 26th, 1966, while much of the country was celebrating Australia Day, Jim Beaumont had a business meeting so his wife Nancy allowed the children to take the five minute bus ride down to Glenegl beach. They had gone many times before, and had even visited the previous day. On this day, though, while the rest of the country was enjoying the holiday, it would become a nightmare for the Beaumont family. The children failed to return home on the 12pm bus as their mother had told them, and when they weren’t on the 2pm or 3pm buses, Nancy Beaumont was frantic. When Jim arrived home from work, the two began searching, but when they failed to find any trace of their children, they contacted the police who would launch the largest search effort in Australian history to that time. Witnesses would come forward to report sighting of the children in the company of an unidentified man in the hours and minutes before they vanished. Over the past fifty-one years, multiple theories have developed and a list of suspects has slowly grown. A psychic visited the country to lend his abilities to the search, but his efforts reaped no additional leads and as the case grew cold police found themselves frustrated and confused as to how three children could simply disappear without a single trace of them ever being located. Among the most popular police theories was that the children had been abducted. What happened to the Beaumont children? Were they abducted by a stranger, or perhaps someone they knew? Were they swept out to sea, never to be found? Is it possible they chose to run away, or did something yet unpredicted happen? Join host Steven Pacheco as he examines the most infamous child disappearance in the history of Australia and tries to sort through the myths, misinformation and fifty-one years worth of speculation and grief. Speaking of Partnership: Personal Stories of the Power and Payoffs of Partnership
Do you follow your "Yes?"Following your "Yes" is about you taking a step forward in your partnerships by taking action and applying at least one thing you heard from our guests during their interviews this week. On today’s episode, all of this week’s guests have generously provided BONUS MATERIAL, not included in the interviews you listened to earlier this week. Each one has provided incredible examples of the power of following your “Yes”. Enjoy! Devi WardNot Following - For Devi her “Yes” was about honoring a No, and saying Yes to walking away. Part of Devi’s work is training people to be Authentic Tantra Practitioners. With one particular student there were a lot of “nos.” They were not receiving and understanding the teachings, they were having difficulty with interference on Skype and a lot of other obstacles. Looking back, she realized that this was her higher self saying to let this one go. It was really hard because Devi was attached to this student getting the results she had hoped for her. This was such an obvious No, but she was so attached and committed to seeing it through that she made it a lot more difficult for herself than she needed to. And in the end it ended up being a painful situation. Following - Devi was really wanting to call in her soul mate and was living in a small town where there were not many opportunities, and she was considering moving to Seattle to be around more people and more options. And she was telling all her friends, that this was a go. While all this was happening, she got a very clear message to stay put and not move. And she followed this “Yes” and just a little while later she met her future husband. They just got married in November. His wife would say “you oughta put some lotion on.” And he never would. Turns out Jim got skin cancer and chances are being a sun worshiper for 40 years probably played a role. And even with the stories in the media about too much sun being a key contributor to skin cancer he still did not do anything to protect himself. As a result of not paying attention to his “Yes” Jim had to deal with a major health issue. Following - Highly successful people in all areas of life all are good at making a good decision of yes or no because they trust their instinct or their gut. The first decision you make is almost always the right one. When Jim started leading his own live events, he did it because he felt in his gut it was the right thing to do. It was still scary, but he knew in his gut it was the right thing to do and he followed it. Most people don’t say “Yes” more often because they don’t have all the steps figured out. Don’t be afraid to say “Yes” and get in action even if you don’t know what’s around the next corner. Wondering how you can live your ideal life? In this podcast episode, you’ll learn exactly how! Our guest for this episode is Jim Palmer, the bestselling author of several books including Decide: The Ultimate Success Trigger and he’s the founder of the Dream Business Academy. Jim sent me a copy of his book and I was quickly blown away by it’s value and Jim’s story. When Jim started his business, it took an entire year before he got his first client. During this phase, he nearly burnt the candle from both ends by taking a job at Target where he showed up at 4 am to stack shelves. Even when he felt like his business was successful, he got a wake-up call from his wife when she asked when they’d go on vacation. When she asked, it had been five years since the last vacation, and even though Jim was crushing it, he felt like his business wouldn’t function without him. Decide is the wake-up call that you need for your business. It’s more than a mindset book. It’s the book that finally gets you up and taking action on your dreams. Jim’s goal is to allow people to live the life of their dreams rather than to just work for the sake of making a living. (S03E12) - How often does love turn into hate? When Jim killed Lee’s husband he sealed his fate. Once someone dies do they leave completely? They might still visit at night quite discreetly. Is Jerome the messiah? He’d laugh if you asked him. Will Gotham fall to the cultists who’ve backed him? Will Maria bring trouble to her stately hosts? Co-hosts Jan Rutherford and Jim Vaselopulos interview Jim Palmer, a marketing and business-building expert, and in-demand coach. The author of five books, Jim is best known internationally as The Newsletter Guru, and creator of No Hassle Newsletters, the ultimate done-for-you newsletter marketing program used by hundreds of clients in nine countries. Jan and Jim talk with Jim Palmer about how he became a business leadership thought leader, and what that means to him; how he grew up with a worker servant mentality, and how he applies it today; some of the principles Jim teaches in Decide and his other books; and what his four pillars are for business success. To end of the interview, Jim and Jan ask for and receive some coaching of their own! Listen in to learn more about getting past your fears, serving without monetary reward, and achieving growth by building on the four pillars. Key Takeaways [3:27] If you put enough good information out there, with a servant attitude, giving value and helping people without expecting return, you get a reputation as a servant thought leader. [6:17] When Jim became an entrepreneur he remembered Sam Walton’s words about the customer’s power to fire everybody by deciding to spend somewhere else. In online marketing in 2006, everything was ‘free.’ If you are really giving, people gravitate toward you. Jim has a free download, “Serve First, How to Unlock a Life of Abundance and Purpose.” No email is needed. [10:32] Jim talks about his book, Decide. High achievers, when presented with a challenge or an opportunity, quickly assess the pros and cons, and then make a decision, yes or no, and act. They never go to ‘Squishyville,’ because business and life happen too quickly. [20:38] Jim’s four pillars of success are Knowledge, Environment, Mindset, and Habits, similar to the growth mindset sought for in special operators. In any field, there are the ordinary, and the high achievers. Very few qualify for the elite. You have to do things that others will not do. [22:45] Environment is space you create. To write, Jim picks the time, sits at his desk, and puts away all distractions. The only thing he wants to do is type what’s in his head. He can write for two or three hours. You have to be able to control the environment, in order to produce the result. [24:03] Mindset is much more important than perfecting your skill or talent. Some very top copywriters get 10 times what a normal copywriter gets. They don’t write 10 times better. Habits are self-evident. Rich people have big libraries, and poor people have big TVs. Have habits in place to make your priorities happen, and create and protect the environment to do it. [26:55] Knowledge for highly successful people means to own who they are; their strengths and limitations. They hire and delegate. To help his business, Jim joined a Mastermind. The leader asked, “What makes you think you’re entitled to the same level of success as these peers ... but you’re not willing to do the same things that they’re doing to grow their business?” [30:23] The idea of a multi-day live event petrified Jim for a few reasons: picking the right date; renting space with food and beverage and a number of guest rooms guaranteed; and fear of disappointing attendees by forgetting how to present. He kicked his fears to the curb, and found out he’s pretty good at it, with five sold out. That’s when he began to accelerate significantly. [31:38] Dan Kennedy is the person most influential on Jim’s development. Dan is a blue-collar guy who built a multi-million dollar business, because he understands people, he understands marketing, and he’s not afraid of hard work. He does something everyday that will bear fruit down the road. Jim learned much about writing from reading Dan Kennedy’s books. [33:40] Jim gave coaching for The Leadership Podcast, which stands in its own unique space. He likes the back-and-forth. His greatest advice to Jim and Jan is to avoid adhering to a strict format and schedule of questions, but to have a lot of conversation starters, and to follow up on answers of interest. Get people to tell stories. Always focus on the listener, not the downloads. Quotable Quotes “I shot my first video in 2009, I had three watchers. I was one of them. My wife and my Mom, I think, were the other two.” “‘It’s no wonder he’s successful. Look at how much stuff he does.’ There’s a real nugget in there, if you think about it.” “We volunteer for three or four different local charities, which are near and dear to our heart.” “If you’re going to expect a big reward, you have to be willing to step up and risk.” “I really think this year is going to be a banner year.” “Rich people have big libraries, and poor people have big TVs.” Books Mentioned on the Show Sam Walton: Made In America, by Sam Walton and John Huey Decide: The Ultimate Success Trigger, by Jim Palmer Stop Waiting For It to Get Easier: Create Your Dream Business Now, by Jim Palmer No B.S. Today, I had the pleasure of chatting with Jim and Christina from Mr. and Mrs. Romance, a travel blog from his and her perspective. These two are an absolute blast, and it is obvious that they love what they do. They are funny, honest, and yet very protective of the community of followers that have gathered. A community they see more as friends. The kind of friends you candidly recount stories to about your recent trip to Bali. Giving them the inside scoops on what is "Must See" and "Must Avoid". They highlight their reviews with the good and not so good which has been fundamental in the trust that they have earned. Here's the scoop on how Mr. & Mrs. Romance keep their readers coming back for more. Uniting and Bringing the Community Together Sharing a story through images and video is how Jim and Christina unite their community and it's through these images they take people on the journey with them. The stories are a way to connect everyone. Jim is the writer, and they've found men are attracted to a blog written in a male voice. The evolution of their community is thanks to telling stories through images and using an authentic voice. It has also grown their community into what feels like a group of trusted friends. Trust, Authenticity, and Passion Creates a Community Connection Jim and Christina now have a larger platform to share their travel adventures, and they take the trust of their readership very seriously. Trust is built through honest advice that in helpful and thorough. For them, seeing people come back to the site and share their own experiences of a place show them that they are connecting in a meaningful way. Their community extends to the places they visit, and the small businesses they support through sharing their experiences within them. They love nothing more than knowing people are visiting these small and sometimes remote places because of a review they've uploaded. Telling good stories by playing to their personal strengths of Christina focusing on photography and Jim focusing on the writing is what motivates readers to take action and follow their travel suggestions. They tell really good stories by expressing how they feel when they are in these places. The passion of their shared experiences is what people want to tap into and as such inspires Jim & Christina to continue to share their experiences. Kinship and Handling Negativity Having a positive mindset and sharing the results of the new adventure creates kinship in the community. When Jim blogs he imagines that he is blogging to a friend. Putting out positivity, they remain open minded and objective. In a way that creates a safe, but positive space. Successful Platform of Communication Everything revolves around the blog, but social media is where the engagement happens. The community likes to hang out on Instagram and Facebook. The social engagement on these platforms drives traffic back to the blog. Be The Drop - Top Communication Tip Being authentic works. Tell a genuine story and people will read it and come back for more and even take action. Honest information is fun. About Jim and Christina Jim and Christina met at random back in 2000. They soon realised that they shared many insights about the world around them and decided to explore it together. They are still together today, and blog about their adventures. They have a mutual love of eating, drinking, and exploring new places and sharing their adventures. Tweetables "We take people on our journey with us through our stories on our camera and connect everyone in our community" Christina "Trust is all you have, and we take it really seriously" Christina "Because we play to our strengths, we have the best of both worlds on the site" Jim To access the weekly podcast episodes as they are released: SUBSCRIBE to us in iTunes here. How do you deal with difficulties? When life throws you an unexpected curve-ball, how do you react/respond? Do you become self-absorbed trying to find a solution OR do you listen to God to find out what is the message in it for you? All things work together for good. It doesn't always seem that way when you lose a loved one, or experience loss, divorce, sickness, pain and problems. Listen in to this one-hour inspiring talk about the life of Jim Labrie, who passed unexpectedly on Saturday April 30, 2016. Many people falsely believe that success, abundance and happiness only come to the lucky ones - that somehow a person is "born" into a life of greatness, joy and peace. Here is the story of a man who was NOT born into a life of wealth, but grew into it with his curiosity, openness, generosity, passion, enthusiasm and dedication to a life of service to others. When Jim's son Jimmy died unexpectedly in 1986, Jim in his grief asked God "What Now?" He was startled to hear a voice, though alone, which said "help people." Jimmie's death was for James Labrie, the beginning of a quest for spiritual understanding and a commitment to serve others. If you are ready for A GREAT LIFE, tune into this show that can change your whole outlook on success and why you are here in the world. Jim Labrie believed that life was all about relationship building and helping people. He believes that success, in its many forms, follows when you devote your life to the service of others. He knows that a few words of encouragement can change a person's life. He would say "You never know how you may influence someone's life when you talk to them." He gave every conversation his full attention and weighed his words carefully as he knew that what may seem insignificant to one, may have great significance to the other. He is the light of the world, a man of great generosity, compassion, kindness and love. Jim Sweeney Creator of Mike Raffone Jim Sweeney is a 57 year old guy who is living his dream. His dream is bringing a cartoon character to life, that has been living rent free in his head since he was born, to fruition. Jim Sweeney creator of Mike Raffone, aka Michael Anthony Raffone, aka Mike Raffone (pronounced microphone), or simply Mike. He's really just a figment of Jim's imagination that he's brought to life. Share Episode 62 on Twitter Jim lives in Clearwater, Florida and has been at the "Mike Gig" full time for the past five years. He has figured out how to monetize it and loves everything he does. He loves what he does. He looks forward to getting up everyday, sitting down at his computer and creating content that is "Mike" related. Mike Raffone is the ultimate talking head on sports. Mike Raffone is his name and he is actually a microphone. He's trademarked as well. Jim went through the trademark process when Mike was introduced because he thought that he would get pushback from ESPN, Fox Sports or CBS Sports, but noone challenged him. The Story Behind Mike Raffone Mike was born in Jim's "DNA" 57 years ago. Jim has always thought like Mike. He's always thought about sports through the lens of the Mike character. Mike is witty, clever, he loves sports, he loves words and he loves humor. When Jim was watching sports, he would always find himself saying "why didn't that ref call that" or "why doesn't that announcer say that" or "why doesn't that sports writer write about that"? If you are a sports fan you can most likely relate, right? One day Jim's wife told him to quit muttering about that stuff and do something about it. It didn't happen five years ago when he formally and officially launched into his new career as the content creator for Mike, it was a gradual process. Jim started his journey like so many of us by getting the confidence to begin, but would stall only because of second guessing himself. He would wonder how he was going to do this and when should he pull the trigger to really launch Mike character. It took Jim going through this process that lasted a couple years before he finally got "the moxy" to say he was going to go cold turkey and that he was just going to do this. Jim decided to not only get started, but to do it right, with passion and he was just going to make it happen. During the interview, Jim took on the persona of Mike Raffone as I asked questions about his website. I went from interviewing Jim Sweeney Creator of Mike Raffone, to interviewing Mike Raffone himself. It was a lot of fun as we discussed some of the things on his bucket list. Mike Raffone's big dream is to be the first animated character to win an ESPY award. It doesn't stop there though as Mike would also like to appear on ESPN Sports Center. Jim broke character for a bit as we talked about appearing on Mike and Mike in the morning because he, Jim, would probably appear as Jim Sweeney Creator of Mike Raffone so he could help explain what Mike Raffone is all about. Jim's goal with Mike is to get a licensing deal with the network. The network could help find a sponsor and help pay the exorbitant cost of animating Mike. Mike could be an online celebrity, as an animated character, bantering back and forth, joking or reporting on sports with real celebrities. Jim believes that Mike will be on Sports Center one day talking back and forth with show hosts. Insight into Mike Raffone While Mike is always fair-minded, he has no problem talking about what he feels even if it might be upsetting to some sports fans. Mike petitions Kobe Bryant to follow the lead of another Laker great, Elgin Baylor, and just retire. Episode # 80 of THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID finds both Matt and Kevin contemplating pulling the old switcheroo. I'm a motherlover, you're a motherlover... When Jim and Pam return from their honeymoon, Michael confides to Jim that he's taken Pam's mom for a lover, and her seats go all the way down. All. The. Way. Down. Jim is skeptical, but surely Pam, more than anything, wants Michael to be happy, RIGHT? Meanwhile, Dwight crafts a fiendish plan to bug Jim's office, but will he be 'hoisted by his own mallard'? hey, he's NOT insane! One thing's for sure, though-- I DO look damn fine in this fedora.
