Listen on YouTube it's the Christmas Special! Luke and Michael share a love for the 1983 film starring Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy. T-shirts can be found here – https://www.redbubble.com/people/ufocast Follow us on twitter @ufo_cast Like us on Facebook Review us on iTunes Email the show – ufocast@yahoo.com The studio had the Galaxian (1979) and Galaga (1981) arcade machines delivered to Matthew Broderick's home. He practiced for two months to prepare for the arcade scene. According to John Badham, the jeep trying to crash through the gate at NORAD and turning over was an actual accident. The jeep was supposed to continue through the gate. They added the scene of the characters running from the jeep and down the tunnel, and used the botched jeep stunt. The NORAD command center built for the movie cost $1 million, making it the most expensive set ever constructed at the time. The producers were not allowed into the actual NORAD command center, so they had to imagine what it was like. In the DVD commentary, director John Badham notes that the actual NORAD command center isn't nearly as elaborate as the one in the movie, calling the set "NORAD's wet dream of itself." There were several nuclear launch close calls that influenced writers Lasker and Parkes to create the scenario of WarGames, including an incident at NORAD on November 9, 1979 when information on a training simulation tape concerning soviet sub launches was accidentally fed into the warning system and for six minutes the American military complex went into high alert. Only after no soviet missiles were detected by the PAVE PAWS early warning radar system did the U.S. stand down. Training simulations were accordingly moved off site of NORAD after this incident. In the movie, one of the scenarios fed to NORAD operators by Joshua is an influx of encroaching soviet missile subs. The WOPR, as seen in the movie, was made of wood and painted with a metal-finish paint. As the crew filmed the displays of the WOPR, Special Effects Supervisor Michael L. Fink sat inside and entered information into an Apple II computer that drove the countdown display.
Part II of our crossover episode with The Bang-Bang Podcast! Van and Lyle are joined by Sam Ratner, Policy Director at Win Without War, and Andy Facini, Communications Director at the Council on Strategic Risks, to discuss WarGames, John Badham's Cold-War techno-thriller that accidentally foresaw the age of algorithmic warfare. What begins as a teenage prank—Matthew Broderick's David Lightman breaking into what he thinks is a computer game—quickly becomes a meditation on automation, deterrence, and human judgment in systems built to annihilate. Together, the group unpacks how WarGames' “WOPR” supercomputer prefigures today's AI decision-making, where machines learn to “take men out of the loop.” They trace how the film's closing revelation (“The only winning move is not to play”) echoes across four decades of nuclear strategy and modern debates over escalation, autonomy, and control. The conversation ranges from NORAD and machine learning to the moral limits of deterrence, the psychology of Cold-War adolescence, and the comic absurdity of believing one can win an unwinnable game. Like Dr. Strangelove before it, WarGames shows us a military machine that runs on fear, faith, and code, and a civilization learning to live with its own programmed self-destruction.Subscribe to the Un-Diplomatic Newsletter: https://www.un-diplomatic.comSubscribe to The Bang-Bang Podcast: https://www.bangbangpod.com/Further ReadingSam's professional pageAndy's professional page“Strategy & Conscience (The Book Review We Need),” by VanTelehack, a retro internet simulator recommended by AndyThe Imagineers of War: The Untold Story of DARPA, by Sharon WeinbergerThe Closed World: Computers and the Politics of Discourse in Cold War America, by Paul N. Illinois just sent a shockwave through the digital wellness and AI ethics space with the WOPR Act—a new law that stops AI from replacing human therapists or making independent clinical decisions. At a time when therapy chatbots are becoming more advanced, more available, and more human-like than ever, this move forces a question we can't ignore: should your mental health care ever be left entirely to an algorithm? In this episode of The Healthier Tech Podcast, we dig into the heart of the WOPR Act and explore why Illinois is saying “humans only” when it comes to therapy. It's a conversation about patient safety, ethics, and the very definition of care in the age of artificial intelligence. Here's what we cover: How AI therapy tools work, and why they've grown so popular so fast. The risks AI can't see—like micro-expressions, body language, and the unspoken clues only humans can catch. Real-world stories of AI therapy helping people, and the scenarios where it could dangerously miss the mark. Why “better than nothing” isn't always better when it comes to mental health care. The difference between real empathy and simulated empathy, and how it shapes trust. The ethical stakes: when corporate motives meet vulnerable minds. Why Illinois decided to act now—and what it signals for the future of AI in healthcare. Whether you're fascinated by technology, concerned about its limits, or passionate about mental health, this episode offers a thought-provoking look at the intersection of AI, ethics, and human connection. Pre-too-cool-for-school, future Ferris starred as a gifted underachiever gamer who hacks (before it was a word!) his way into an Air Force supercomputer name WOPR. This "HAL" knockoff only plays high stakes and tries to trigger WWIII - in real life, unless Broderick and Ally Sheedy can save the world from the rogue AI and humans who keep upping the ante. Shall we play a game? This week Curtis, Erin, and Gabe (AKA the DEFCON 3) dust off our modems, reboot our AOL accounts and discuss the perfect way to butter an ear of corn! We also share our first encounters with computers before we dial into 1983's WarGames. Pre-“Bueller" Matthew Broderick stars as a high school computer hacker who finds himself at the center of an International incident all because he wanted to order a WOPR online in a pre-DoorDash world. WarGames remains remarkably relevant in light of our current focus on AI, addressing enduring issues that continue to challenge us today. We're dusting off the ol' projector this week for a discussion about the 1983 nuclear-warfare classic WarGames (which Brad had never seen!). Did you know the original movie had nothing to do with hacking or nukes? What exactly was inside WOPR, anyway? Is the movie somehow more relevant now than it was then? How much did all that gear in Matthew Broderick's bedroom cost? This month, Ian and Cole look back on 40 years of John Badham's brainy, ballistic blockbuster, Wargames! The 1983 techno-thriller finds high school computer genius David Lightman (Matthew Broderick) on the run from the Feds after he mistakenly hacks into the Defense Department's new "War Operations Planned Response" system--which runs constant simulations of World War III. Can David, his friend, Jennifer (Ally Sheedy), and the WOPR's co-creator, Professor Falken (John Wood) shut down the "game" before the world's missile silos are emptied out? This spirited and surprising discussion is not only the Kicking the Seat Podcast's 900th episode, it is also an essential look into what makes "Late Screening" one of our favorite series. On Episode 134 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis resumes RetroZest's celebration of the 40th anniversary of WARGAMES; the first mass-consumed, visual media with the central theme of remote computing as well as hacking! The film stars Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, John Wood, Ally Sheedy and Barry Corbin. Assisting Curtis in this part 3 episode is the supporting actor who portrayed Arthur Cabot, the member of the Reagan Administration who recommends John McKittrick's WOPR idea to the President; KENT WILLIAMS! His scenes with Dennis Lipscomb, Dabney Coleman, Juanin Clay, Barry Corbin and Michael Ensign are among the most memorable ones in the film! Kent and Curtis had a wonderful behind the scenes discussion about WarGames, and also about other key points of his career (including The New Mike Hammer with Stacy Keach). In this episode, we discuss the use of accelerators in the Tanzu Application Platform to help developers start programming quickly and efficiently. We also touch on some of the developer-focused announcements made at the recent AWS re:Invent conference. Finally, we have a discussion about ChatGPT experiments and their potential to reduce the amount of tedious work for office workers. Ben expresses some concerns about the technology, but Coté offers a compelling argument for its usefulness.† Be sure to check out Ben's new talk about Backstage in the Tanzu Application Platform GUI including: Accelerators (code templates), secure software supply chain visualization, API documentation, and more! If you prefer video, here is the original recording, it has some bonus monster truck material: Links discussed in the show: We talk about Ben's recent video on templates (“accelerators”) in the Tanzu Application Platform. Also, we discuss the supply chain demo he does in that same video. AWS Re:Invent news. Another 2 hr keynote with plenty of new services, many on the data side of things, plus the usual new EC2 instances. We talk about CodeCatalyst and AppComposer. Check out last week's Software Defined Talk overview for more. ChatGPT - an AI powered bot that's been in my timeline a few times this week. From the same people that provide Dall-E, AI assisted drawing from natural language. SpectroCloud gave it a Kubernetes focused interview and it did pretty well. This feels like Boston Dynamics showcasing their robot inventions, in that it simultaneously amazes the public at large and scares them in equal measure. Unfortunately it doesn't respond to ‘Shall we play a game?' (for those that remember War Games and WOPR) - that would have been a cool Easter egg! See Coté's experiments and take on it too. † This week's description written by ChatGPT with the prompt: “Can you write a podcast episode summary for me? We talked about some developer tools that help start programming (called accelerators) in our own product (the Tanzu Application Platform), then about a few developer things at AWS re:Invent. And then Coté talked a long time about ChatGPT experiments and his theory about how it can help reduce office worker toil. Ben was a bit scared.”

In this episode, we watched a whopper, err WOPR of a movie in the 2008 direct to video-on-demand sequel to the classic nuke movie called WarGames: The Dead Code. What could go wrong when you put artificial intelligence back in charge of the nukes and the predator drones? How to do you convince a machine that nuclear war is not winnable? What happens when you don't know what “The Dead Code” is and at this point you're too afraid to ask? Tim Westmyer (@NuclearPodcast) and returning special guest Lucy Steigerwald (@lucystag) answer these questions and more. Before we booked our flight to Montreal, we recommend: -WarGames (1983) -Miracle Mile (1988) -The Iron Giant (1999) -Natasha Bajemna, Rescind Order, 2020 -David Hoffman, The Dead Hand: The Untold Story of the Cold War Arms Race and its Dangerous Legacy, 2009 -Future Man (2017-2020, Hulu TV Show) -Zachary Kallenborn, “Giving an AI Control of Nuclear Weapons: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?,” The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, February 1, 2022 -Hackers React to WarGames: The Dead Code, Alex Chaveriat, YouTube, July 28, 2021, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PghUBYY4fpE Check out our website, SuperCriticalPodcast.com, for more resources and related items. "Nie pijemy (alkoholu - red.) przed wejściem do wody. Tak samo, jak nie jemy, przynajmniej godzinę przed wejściem do wody. Druga kwestia - kąpiemy się w miejscu strzeżonym. W miejscach, w których nie ma ratowników, nikt nie pomoże. Trzecia - nigdy samotnie" - radzi w Porannej rozmowie w RMF FM Paweł Różański, ratownik WOPR wszystkim, którzy w lecie zamierzają spędzać czas nad wodą.

In Part 1 we started building the world's greatest 80s movie memorabilia collection. In Part 2 with the help of celebrity chef Graham Elliot, we added some rad items like the glaive from Krull, the WOPR computer from WarGames and the Auryn from The Neverending Story. Today in Part 3 we're building out the museum to include our favorite keepsakes from 80s horror films. I'm Mo Shapiro and joining me as always, the white painted Shatner mask to my Halloween nightmare, Max Sanders. And with that, let's build our collection!
In this episode Man explores cyberspace.
