Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Dr.justinfarnsworth - IGDr. Justin Farnsworth turns conventional wisdom about Achilles tendon injuries upside down in this eye-opening conversation about prevention, rehabilitation, and performance training. With recent high-profile NBA Achilles injuries making headlines, his practical, evidence-based approach offers a refreshing perspective for trainers and athletes alike."Anyone selling you an injury prevention program is a snake oil salesman," states Dr. Farnsworth, explaining that while we can't prevent injuries entirely, we can implement smart strategies to build resilience. Drawing on his 20 years of coaching experience and 13 years as a board-certified sports physical therapist, he breaks down the biomechanics of Achilles injuries and shares specific techniques for training the tendon properly. The conversation explores why heavy eccentric training (true overload, not just controlled lowering) is crucial for tendon health, and why training the calf in fully lengthened positions might be your best protection against injury. Dr. Farnsworth challenges the outdated RICE protocol, explaining why compression and targeted isometrics often work better than ice, and why complete rest is usually counterproductive for healing. For trainers working with injured clients, there's practical advice on rehabilitation timelines (typically 9-12 months for Achilles ruptures), the powerful benefits of contralateral training for the uninjured side, and how to safely program around pain. Perhaps most valuable is his three-part framework for Achilles health: mobility, strength in lengthened positions, and rate of force development through progressive plyometric training.Whether you're a fitness professional or someone recovering from a tendon injury, this episode delivers actionable strategies to build stronger, more resilient bodies. Loading the tissue is crucial for effective tendon rehabilitation. Education and communication are vital in managing patient expectations and outcomes. Isometrics can be beneficial but may not work for everyone. Pain management in rehab is nuanced and should be individualized. Understanding the athlete's background helps tailor rehab strategies. Patellar tendinopathy presents differently in various athletes and requires specific approaches. The importance of restoring quad function in knee injuries cannot be overstated. Reactive tendinopathy cases can often resolve quickly with proper management. The debate on acceptable pain levels in rehab continues, emphasizing the need for individualized approaches. Consider alternative exercises like reverse Nordic for knee rehab. Gradually increase load and time to fatigue the quads. Warm-up routines can significantly impact tendon health. Compression forces are unavoidable in running; manage them wisely. Psychosocial factors play a crucial role in tendinopathy recovery. NMES can be a last resort for irritable tendons. Maintaining activity is essential for athletes during rehab. Walking warm-ups can enhance performance and recovery. Tendon stiffness is critical for injury prevention. Understanding mechanical transduction is vital for effective rehab. In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast, Tim McGrath discusses the complexities of ACL injuries, emphasizing the importance of blending art and science in rehabilitation. He shares insights on assessing athletes' risk factors, the significance of biomechanical evaluations, and the necessity of effective communication in sports settings. Tim also highlights the role of biases in training and assessment, advocating for a structured approach to skill acquisition and injury prevention. In this conversation, Tim discusses the common mistakes made in ACL rehabilitation, emphasizing the importance of understanding both biological and functional components. He highlights the significance of objective assessments in the later stages of rehabilitation and challenges the traditional six-month return timeline, advocating for a more individualized approach based on the athlete's readiness rather than a strict timeline. Main talking points: ACL injuries require a blend of art and science in rehab Biomechanical assessments are crucial for identifying risk factors Rehabilitation must address both physical and cognitive aspects Common mistakes in ACL rehab include ignoring structural issues The ‘six-month return' timeline for ACL injuries

The fear of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury, or ACL, hangs over all athletes. It is a season-ending injury, agonising, and with a long painful recovery. But why is it happening to so many female footballers? Research shows that ACL injuries are up to six times more likely to happen to female athletes than male. Former England International Footballer Lianne Sanderson, who suffered an ACL injury in 2016, explores the science behind this statistic and finds out about the solutions that are being put in place. From the UK charity initiative Power Up To Play, established by medical professionals to offer preventative support at grassroots level, to experts at Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center in Norway and the team at IDA Boots who are making female-specific soccer cleats, Lianne introduces a number of solutions and learns about the science of ACL injuries in female athletes.
