"This is your chance to make a real difference."Accounting Influencerswith Rob BrownMillions of accountants and bookkeepers are stuck in a cycle of overwork, undercharging, and undervaluation. In this episode of the Accounting Influencers podcast, Adam Lean, CEO and co-founder of TheCFOProject.com, delivers a wake-up call: The compliance model is broken—and the profession must change course to remain relevant.More Rob BrownLean explains that for most clients, every accountant “looks the same.” They expect the books to be done and the taxes to be filed, and they rarely see the difference between high-quality and mediocre service. This makes it nearly impossible for accountants to raise prices or grow sustainably.“Your clients don't understand how to evaluate your work,” Lean says. “So they see you as interchangeable. That's the trap.”To earn more, accountants often take on more clients or work longer hours—neither of which leads to long-term career satisfaction or better client outcomes. And because software tools and tech companies now offer “automated accounting,” competition is intensifying.

In today's rerun episode of Let's Talk Business, we're excited to revisit a foundational conversation with Adam Lean, a seasoned accountant, business owner, and founder of the CFO Project. Hosted by Meny Hoffman, this episode focuses on the crucial importance of understanding and managing business finances, especially for entrepreneurs driven by passion rather than numbers. Adam Lean delves into the common challenges faced by business owners who often prioritize their craft over financial management. This candid discussion illuminates how neglecting crucial metrics can undermine business success, and emphasizes the vital role of cash flow in sustaining and growing a business. Listeners will gain valuable insights into essential financial strategies. Adam breaks down the importance of tracking cash flow over mere revenue or profit, explaining that actual cash on hand is what keeps a business afloat. He introduces key performance metrics—like the number of leads, conversion rates, retention rates, purchase frequency, and average purchase amounts—that drive cash flow and highlights the need for regular monitoring using tools like scorecards. This episode also clarifies the distinction between accountants and CFOs, drawing attention to the proactive, strategic planning that CFOs provide, which goes beyond mere number tracking. The conversation underscores the benefits of virtual CFO services for small and medium-sized businesses, offering a cost-effective way to gain strategic financial insight. Through practical examples, including a roofing company that transformed its business by focusing on targeted financial metrics, Adam underscores the power of weekly tracking and adjustment over waiting for annual financial reports. Tune in to uncover actionable advice and essential wisdom for mastering your business's financial health. Whether you are an emerging entrepreneur or an established business owner, this episode is filled with indispensable strategies to enhance your financial literacy and business performance. 00:00 - Business reports often confuse owners, making it difficult to take actionable steps. 06:12 - Upgrade to PandaDoc for efficient document creation. 07:37 - Miscalculated margins due to overlooked financial insights. 13:31 - Leads, conversion, retention, purchase frequency rates. 15:16 - CFO vs. Accountant: Broader business performance tracking. 19:03 - Strategies to improve gross profit percentage highlighted. 21:49 - Involvement ensures spending yields profitable returns. 27:17 - Successful entrepreneurs are determined and persistent. 28:33 - Helping clients succeed financially as trusted advisors. Implement scorecards to track weekly performance, helping you make informed decisions in real-time rather than waiting for quarterly or annual reports. Understand that accountants focus on historical data and compliance, while CFOs offer strategic planning for future growth and profitability. If hiring a full-time CFO is too costly, consider virtual CFO services to get strategic financial advice at a fraction of the cost. Evaluate all expenses to ensure they're contributing to making money. Avoid cutting costs randomly, as this could harm business operations. Instead of relying solely on industry standards, benchmark your performance against your past results to gauge progress and improvement accurately. https://ptex.co/pandadoc https://thecfoproject.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamlean/

As an accountant, do you feel stuck trying to grow your firm? Making more money requires taking on more clients or working more hours – which you likely don't have capacity to do. The solution to getting your firm unstuck? Start offering CFO services. They need a business advisor they can trust. Be that for them. Because people are willing to pay more if you can help them have a better future. Adam Lean (Founder of the CFO Project) shares with host Christian Jones (TaxProMarketer CEO) how offering CFO services will make your accounting firm stand out from the pack. Former accountant, now entrepreneur, Adam is the founder of his own CFO Advisory Firm. His experiences there mean he knows that business owners make decisions based on gut feeling. That's why he shows them how to read between the lines of their financial reports — so they can make informed decisions that keep them in the black and move the profit needle higher. He now runs a mentorship program called the CFO Project, to show accountants how to grow their practices with business advisory services. Ever wondered how top accountants stay ahead in a fast-evolving industry? Rob Brown hosts a panel of influential voices in the accounting world to discuss the current state and future of the profession. The conversation delves into the threats and challenges faced by accountants, the need for rebranding and attracting new talent, the role of technology, and the opportunities that lie ahead. The panelists, including Paul Surtees, Leslie Shiner, Denise Froemming, and Adam Lean, share their candid perspectives on the commoditization of accounting services, the importance of shifting from compliance-focused to advisory-focused roles, and the need for accountants to speak the language of business rather than accounting jargon. They emphasize the necessity of embracing technological advancements like AI and automation to free up time for more meaningful work and the imperative of fostering financial literacy in society.Key Takeaways:Accountants must move beyond compliance and embrace advisory roles to stay relevant. The profession faces a talent shortage and needs to rebrand itself to attract and retain the next generation. Firms should focus on helping clients be profitable and speak a language they understand.Financial literacy should be prioritized from a young age to foster a deeper understanding of numbers. Embracing AI and technology can free up accountants to provide more purposeful and impactful work. Quotes:"They should be listening to their clients. They should be asking for and being proactive in helping their clients instead of retroactive." - Leslie Shiner "You cannot talk like an accountant. You got to talk like to a human, because your customer is a human, not an accountant." - Adam Lean "I would love to see financial literacy, like, in every high school, community college, so we could start from a, and it's in about 25 different states, but we're working on it." - Denise Froemming "You can't go and speak to accountants to tell them how to do their day job because we're not accountants." - Paul Surtees "Accounting is the language of business. And I think this is a great time for accountants to remember that and realize that their job is to be an interpreter of accounting in a way that makes sense." - Adam Lean View this episode in video on YouTube here:https://youtu.be/aS_eaA5zVtg◣━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━◢The Accounting Influencers Podcast, hosted by Rob Brown, is one of the world's leading shows for accounting leaders, professionals, finance specialists, software vendors, tech providers and influencers. Service Business Mastery - Business Tips and Strategies for the Service Industry
This episode is a re-release from a past episode with Adam Lean. Adam is my bookkeeper and people are constantly asking me about bookkeeping and accounting, so I thought it best that I release this episode! Keep in mind, I sound like a baby podcaster and gave out the wrong email address (it redirects) but the content is still golden! Adam Lean knows what he was meant to do. After graduating from college, he became an accountant, but quickly realized it was not his calling. He started an eCommerce store, and things started out great. But before long, something felt off. Sales were up, his business seemed to be growing, but his profits just weren’t telling the same story. Even as an accountant, he couldn’t figure out why. Like many business owners, Adam was wearing ALL the hats in his business and struggled to devote the necessary time/energy to take a closer look at what was working, what wasn’t working, and what he should be doing to boost the financial health of his company. So Adam set out to find out exactly what he should be focusing on. And from this quest, Adam started the CFO Project. Today, Adam and his team of “Chief Financial Officers” work with business owners who are struggling to make the right decisions to yield profit. Together, they plot out a roadmap to guide each client (and each client’s business) to become more profitable and have more cash flow, allowing those business owners to finally take control of their business and finances. They’re not like most business coaches, consultants, or gurus. They’re more like financial business coaches that focus on RESULTS. To Adam, results mean more profit & more cash flow for a business. https://thecfoproject.com/sbm/ https://serviceemperor.com @tershblissett on social media.

Episode 135 - The One with Adam Lean How do you know how well you are doing if you don’t measure it? Ok, how about this... How would you know who was winning if they dint keep score? Now try this: How do you know how you are doing if you aren't keeping score? And the better question is: how do you get better if you don’t know to get better? I am talking about metrics. Metrics is how we can keep score on everything we do. If it has and input and an output, you can measure it. But the thing is, most of us don’t measure anything. How long does it take you to service and account, run a test, write a report, or sale a new customer? Peter Drucker said “What get’s measured get’s improved.” So, if we aren't measuring, we don’t have the structure to improve. One of the things we need to measure in business is our business. The is a limitless supply of items we can measure in business. But measuring them is only step one. Know what to do with that data and then how to know you are improvement is what is needed. I'm guessing you are like me and you use a handful of metrics. But what about the ones you don’t know to use because you’ve never heard of them. Those could be the ones that solve that problem you are dealing with. IF you don’t know what they are, you cannot benefit from them. That’s why I partner with people that know more than I do. Napoleon Hill in Think and Grow Rich mentioned how Henry Ford admitted under oath that he didn’t know everything he needed to know about business. But he had access to those people he needed to help him fill in the gaps. What are your gaps? How will you fill them in? Having a partner like Mr. Ford alluded to is key. Today I talk with one of those partners, Adam Lean of The CFO Project. Adam lets us know what we should be thinking about when it comes to tracking how we are doing in business. Many have asked me about how they can find someone to help them in particular areas like: Financial (CFO) Technical Virtual assistance Insurance And the list goes on... I and the Scaling UP! H2O team have partnered with individuals and companies we trust and can help you with your questions. Remember, Henry Ford didn’t know everything, he just knew who had the information he needed when he needed it. Isn't it time you started thinking like Mr. Ford? Go to scalinguph2o.com/ta to find a trusted advisor to help you today. Key Quotes: “More often than not accounting is just looking at what happened, not how to be proactive to make something happen.” -Adam Lean “Fifty percent of all small businesses will fail within the first five years. It’s because they did not focus on the right things that matter to have a profitable business.” -Adam Lean “Most business owners are very busy and are focused on the day to day operations because that is what they enjoy doing. In order to stay in business you’ve got to focus on the most important things needed to have a profitable business which turns into cash flow.” -Adam Lean “Imagine going to a baseball game and you don’t know what the score is. So many people run their businesses that way and they simply don’t realize how much that information can lead to better decisions” -Adam Lean Key Points: 8:48 – Hear more about Adam’s background 12:50 – At what point does a business need a CFO? 16:41 – What aspects of financials are important to consider for a successful business? 22:17 – Understanding sustainable growth rate 29:30 – What does the relationship with the CFO look like? 41:10 – Important metrics for businesses to track 45:11 – Where to start learning more about your financials 47:40 – Lightning round questions Links Mentioned in Episode: Scranton Associates Rising Tide Mastermind 12 Week Year by Brian Moran The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. To an entrepreneur, running a business is all about turning their passion into profit. However, it’s easy to forget how running a business is composed of several nuts and bolts including handling the finances. Most people would refer to accounting and finance as the serious, nitty-gritty part of business. Some may even describe it as "messy" with all of the moving parts. My guest knows how to work out that delicate balance. He is Adam Lean, President of the CFO Project. Tune in as Adam and I talk about how you can drastically improve the profitability of your business, increase your revenue, and retain your existing customers. In other words, you can be making a ton of money – and not have anything to show for it. We’re talking about numbers… and it’s probably not the ones you’re thinking of.

Today we're talking to Adam Lean about three ways to get cash for your practice and why they may not all be ideal. Cashflow is the lifeblood of your business. You can have profits and not have cash flow and go out of business. Half of all businesses fail because they run out of cash flow. Adam Lean is the founder of the CFO Project. Adam became an accountant immediately after college, but quickly realized accounting was NOT his calling. He left the 9-5 world to launch and eCommerce company, but after a few years, something felt off. Sales were up, the business was growing, but the numbers in his bank account just didn’t tell the same story. Even as an accountant, Adam was frustrated by the financials, leaving him completely overwhelmed as a business owner. He set out to learn exactly what business owners should be focusing on, and eventually founded the CFO Project. Today he helps small business owners determine what is and isn’t working in their businesses, by guiding them through a proven system to ensure their business is financially solid and more profitable- without the emotional overwhelm. Adam Lean helps small businesses, especially eCommerce companies, sort out their financials, i.e. “their books,” to figure out what changes they can make to maximize their profits. Turns out a lot of entrepreneurs are leaving plenty of money on the table without realizing it. Or, they’re wondering where all the money goes at the end of each month, even though their sales are great.

Small business owners have a lot on their plate: marketing, product development, sales, hiring, expenses… that's a recipe for overwhelm, says Adam Lean. And, all too often, what takes a backseat are the financials– the numbers that gauge the true health of your business. Are you living with the attitude of “if I make more money, my finances will take care of themselves,” or “besides, that's why I have an accountant/bookkeeper, anyways…”? That's the entirely wrong attitude to have. Adam says if you don't monitor the right numbers, you'll make bad decisions and potentially endanger your business. And, that's something that someone who does your taxes can't help you with. Adam shares the three metrics you should focus on first, as well as… When – and why – more sales doesn't equal more profits How to tell if you're just “buying yourself a job” or truly running a business Creating the customized financial “scoreboard” you need to make decisions Overcoming the #1 thing all business owners struggle with And more

Half of all small businesses go out of business, they never even see their fifth birthday. And it's pretty much because of one reason; they just simply ran out of cash. Today we are talking with Adam Lean on the #1 reason that 50% of businesses fail, and how business owners can prevent it from happening to them. Today he helps small business owners determine what is and isn’t working in their businesses, by guiding them through a proven system to ensure their business is financially solid and more profitable- without the emotional overwhelm. thecfoproject.com/treadmill
As founder of The CFO Project, Adam Lean consults with small businesses who’ve stalled and helps them to grow while maintaining a healthy profit – something the owners haven’t been able to do themselves. Every business has its own set of obstacles to achieving that goal, of course. But, says Adam, there are several specific things that he sees most businesses doing wrong… or not doing at all when they should be.
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the financials of your business… confused about cashflow… upset that the venture that was supposed to give you more time has you working more than ever? Adam Lean’s mission is to help small business owners maximize profit and personal freedom. And to get the word out beyond his clients, he’s started the P is for Profit podcast.
Adam Lean knows exactly how it feels to be under financial pressure; following a short career as an Accountant he started a sporting goods enterprise. A few years in he realised he was in significant financial trouble, despite having the background to have seen the warning signs. Adam has combined his accounting and entrepreneurial experience to create the 4 Step Process; Path To Profitability, where he works with other independent business owners to ensure their business financially healthy. How do you work "on" and not just "in" the business? We sit down with Adam Lean, Founder of The CFO Project, as he discusses not liking accounting even though he was an accounting major, the difference on revenue and profit, and how to keep as much profit as possible. Later Adam explains in detail what his team does at The CFO Project and he shares some motivation with StartupNation. In this week's Reflection Point, we dive into the difference between working on the business as opposed to just in it which includes a great piece by The New York Times on the subject. **More On Adam** Adam Lean knows what he was meant to do. After graduating from college, he became an accountant, but quickly realized it was not his calling. He started an eCommerce store, and things started out great. But before long, something felt off. Sales were up, his business seemed to be growing, but his profits just weren't telling the same story. Even as an accountant, he couldn't figure out why. Like many business owners, Adam was wearing ALL the hats in his business and struggled to devote the necessary time/energy to take a closer look at what was working, what wasn't working, and what he should be doing to boost the financial health of his company. So, Adam set out to find out exactly what he should be focusing on to have a more financially stable business. And from this quest, Adam started The CFO Project. Today, Adam and his team of “Chief Financial Officers” work with business owners who are struggling to make the right decisions to yield a profit. Together, they plot out a roadmap to guide each clients' business to become more profitable and have more cash flow, allowing those business owners to not only have a business that's financially solid but to have a business that they can enjoy again. They're not like most business coaches, consultants, or gurus. They're more like financial business coaches that focus on RESULTS. To Adam, results mean more profit & more cash flow for a business.
