Our next guest is an Oscar-nominated composer and experimental musician known as Hauschka who is behind the score of Showtime's acclaimed crime drama Your Honor (starring Bryan Cranston) and most recently, the Joe Penna directed sci-fi thriller Stowaway. The film follows a three-person crew on a mission to Mars that faces an impossible choice when an unplanned passenger jeopardizes the lives of everyone on board. *Starring: Daniel Dae Kim, Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette, and Shamier Anderson. Stowaway differs from most sci-fi films, which are generally action-packed, high-energy, and loud. Stowaway takes place entirely on the spaceship, and the four crew members are the only people featured. The focus of the film is the crew's communication with one another—detailing their raw and humanistic conversations, as they decipher their options for survival. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/composertalk/support
“The Cold Equations,” the 1954 science fiction story by Tom Godwin, was a genre-defining work that looked hard at the impersonal efficiency of modern technologies, the types of sacrifice we find acceptable in the name of “progress,” and the inevitability of death.
James Cameron-Wilson reflects on this year's Oscar ceremony and how well British talent did. He reviews the Netflix sci-fi film Stowaway from Joe Penna with Anna Kendrick and Toni Collette. And he also looks at the post-apocalyptic comedy drama Love And Monsters, also available on Netflix. Simon Rose chips in with a recommendation for the horror period TV drama The Terror, starring Jared Harris and Ciaran Hinds.

Science fiction is often used as a way to explore aspects of social mores, painting pictures of what's working and what's not in our societies. On the inaugural episode of the Queen Venerator podcast, we talk to debonair bon vivant/area man Joe Penna about three things from pop culture. First up, we discuss the board game Risk, and how despite its influence, many see it as a relic of the past. Next, we discuss Resident Evil 4, one of the greatest video games of all-time, and one that marked a stark departure from the tried and true Resident Evil formula of the past. Finally, we discuss Psycho Goreman. Dear God.
Sid and Chanyi take their first crack at podcasting. In this episode, we are discussing Joe Penna's Arctic (2018).

I have had the pleasure of chatting with Philippe quite a few times and I always walk away learning something new. Not just through the lessons he was passed down from his grandfather but through his own insatiable curiosity. Philippe has a lot on the horizon like consulting on a new project involving the Red Sea (where his grandfather did a lot of work on his Aqua Lung system - which spawned the first SCUBA system), and a new network project which he teases in this conversation, and his new baby girl with wife Ashlan Gorse. Michael Stahl-David (Narcos, Cloverfield, Chambers) drops by to chat about backpacking trips, living in Colombia while filming ‘Narcos’, finding love there, and more. The last time I saw Michael was on the volleyball court, where I rebroke my ring finger, but pretty sure we won so it was all worth it. I don’t think I could think of anyone better to kick off ‘Great Adventures’. I met Michael during the press cycle for his film ‘The Light of the Moon’, which he co-starred in with Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn 99). I had the pleasure of hosting a few screenings of the movie with the cast and we got to talking after a few of the events. For a debut feature film, Joe Penna's "Arctic" will keep you riveted start to finish. A frozen version of "Castaway," and just as grueling. Mads Mikkelsen's performance as Overgård is worthy of applause. This film proves that you don't need fancy dialogue to tell a compelling story. Never miss a movie review. Hit subscribe!
