Hello Young Lovers!Welcome to a special Saint Valentine's Day TWOFER from The Splendid Bohemians:Today we're featuring two enchanting, encyclopedic British song stylists: Anne Briggs and Elvis Costello. First up: the majestic Ms. Briggs.SHE MOVED THROUGH THE FAIR by Anne Briggs (Topic, 1963)Barefoot and bedraggled, Anne Briggs became the muse of the British Traditional Folk Boom in the early nineteen sixties. Her short performance career of mystical magic was retired at age 27, leaving behind a limited, but monumental discography. I first heard She Moved Through the Fair on Irish Heartbeat, made by Van Morrison and the Chieftains, and it's ethereal message left me paralyzed with romantic longing. But, that was just the prelude to my discovery of the plangent tones from this Goddess of acapella Celtic song. OPPORTUNITY by Elvis Costello and the Attractions (Columbia, 1980)This cut from my favorite Elvis Costello album, GET HAPPY!!! Is R&B funky with a Stax inspired beat and tasty organ punctuations by Steve Nieve. The music is absolutely giddy, and although the acrid lyrics - (so typical of the former Declan Patrick MacManus during this early period) - may be pessimistic and sneering, the overall effect is energizing. In fact, the recurring refrain: “this is your big opportunity….”, with the caveat: “don't turn around” indicates the intense, forward-looking dedication with which this artistic social climber fueled his rocket-like ascent to the firmament of the musical masters. Although Elvis succeeded handily, his early anti-authoritarian stance reminds me of so many other also-rans that, in preparation for their inevitable fall to irrelevance and obscurity, padded the ground below with a protective “fuck you” attitude. But, you knew all along that underneath the bravado that they really craved the gatekeepers recognition. The jaunty music belies the message of the sour lyrics, implying an alternate, more inspiring interpretation: Be alert! Recognize your opportunities and grab them while you can.
There was a crippling blizzard in Iowa in April of 1973. Over a foot of snow fell, coupled with 50-70 mph winds. But, inside my dormitory at U of I, I was warmed by the eternal sunshine of Pentangle's evocation of the 12th century. The plangent voice of Jacqui McShee, accompanied by John Renbourn and Bert Jansch's jazz infused “baroque folk” sustained me throughout that challenging season. Not usually one to subscribe to any woo-woo, New Ageist practices, I nonetheless became convinced that I had lived before as a medieval troubadour - a sensation that recently resurfaced when I was introduced to the Witcher saga, because I strongly identified with Dandelion, that narrative's ironic balladeer. Ms. McShee was my gateway drug to the time-traveling vocal intoxications of Anne Briggs, Shirley Collins, Maddy Prior, June Tabor, Sandy Denny, Kate Rusby, and others. A.L. Lloyd and Richard Thompson became my “spirit guides” through the library of Child ballads; a path which eventually led me back home to the USA via Alan Lomax and Pete Seeger. Song research became my professional passion and mission. Willy O Winsbury (Child 100), a traditional Scottish ballad, has many variations and possible derivations, one of which originates in the recounting of James V's courtship and marriage to Madeleine de Valois of France. In Pentangle's deft retelling, Willy and Janet's love triumphs over shame and death. You cannot ask for more than that.
I recommend a search for a recording of the song Cressida sings, an English folk song called Reynardine, which I didn't even begin to do justice. There's a recording of an a cappella version by Anne Briggs that haunts me. Likewise, Maid on the Shore is quite the intriguing ballad. Ten points to the maiden, indeed.
When you feel stuck and not getting the results you are wanting, yet feel like you are doing 'all the right things' maybe the very thing you need to do, you don't want to do because you are afraid people will leave. Maybe the very thing you need to do is show up as yourself. Carrie-Anne and Sarah go in-depth and, as always, keep it real, about today's topic: showing up as yourself and people leaving. Let us know what you feel while listening to this conversation. What thoughts come up for you? Reach out to Carrie-Anne or Sarah with questions and your aha moments. Lisa Knapp is an English folk singer, musician and songwriter. Her singing voice has been described as crystal clear and reminiscent of Anne Briggs. She can be heard singing on the closing credits of the film Living starring bill Nighy. she's touring in March 2023 with Marry Waterson and Nathanial Mann going under the name Hack Poets Guild. She has released three solo albums and one of my very favourite things in lockdown was her singing the weather on you tube, where she would improv a song of the day's weather forecast accompanied on harmonium. In this episode Lisa talks about identity, illness, circadian rhythms and even sings us a lullaby. ELUSIVE GODDESSMary Hopkin possesses one of the most achingly beautiful voices in creation. You wouldn't be blamed, though, for only remembering her for the Paul McCartney produced debut single, “Those Were the Days” from 1968. That song was ubiquitous and sold a million and a half copies in the US alone. She and the cute Beatle followed it up with “Goodbye”, which also hit big. Then, this, her second album, produced by future husband Tony Visconti, was recorded. After, that… relative silence, until 18 years later with the release of 1989's “Spirit”. She is quoted as saying that Earth Song Ocean Song was the album that she wanted to make, and so she refrained from scratching the Show Business itch, dedicating herself instead to raising her children. She made some appearances, and even starred in a BBC 1 TV series, but, mostly she took charge of her own choices, as opposed to being formed and manipulated by others. This is indeed a definitive folk music showcase, lovingly produced by Visconti, with covers by Cat Stevens, Ralph McTell (Streets of London), and string arrangements by the majestic Richard Hewson (of Beatles' and Nick Drake fame). It is an obscure gem by one of England's finest folk muses. Mary Hopkin was victimized by her massive early success. “Those were the Days” was an anomalous monster pop hit for the 18 year old, unrepeatable and out of sync with its own times. Mary's hope of establishing a respected recording career after that was akin to Henry Winkler's struggles to escape the popular effect of being The Fonz. He did it eventually, with Bill Hader's BARRY, but it took over 40 years of trying. Put the Welsh goddess Mary Hopkin on the roster of the greatest British female folk vocalists like Sandy Denny, Jacqui McShee, Shirley Collins, Anne Briggs, June Tabor, and Maddy Prior. Discover and enjoy.

Polly Jean Harvey (born 9 October 1969) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. Primarily known as a vocalist and guitarist, she is also proficient with a wide range of instruments. Over the course of her career, Harvey established herself as one of the most individual and influential songwriters of her era, exploring themes of sex, religion, and political issues with unnerving honesty, dark humor, and a twisted theatricality. OVERVIEWGrowing up on the move, Anne Briggs has always bounced from one thing to another, both literally and figuratively. From traveling internationally to homeschooling, she has had the opportunity to learn from non-traditional educational experiences and choose her interests from an early age. Now as an adult, “Anne Of All Trades” continues to build her skills with the same curiosity and self-directed learning style. In this special re-airing of one of our favorite Bucket Talk episodes, Jeremy sits down with Anne to learn about her incredibly diverse background, from homeschooling, to blacksmithing, to woodworking, to farming, and much more. ABOUT ANNEFrom an early age, Anne Briggs has learned in a non-traditional educational setting that is different from most Americans. Anne's parents were part of a missions organization for a majority of her life, and as a result she was exposed to a wide array of cultures and ways of living. “...I had a really cool upbringing, getting to live all over the world with a group of people… That's kind of, you know, I got exposed to a lot of different cultures and a lot of different things as a kid. And I've had a vast array of interests over the years as a result. And that kind of basically led me to what I'm currently doing with the ‘Anne Of All Trades' thing is basically giving a name to my utter and complete lack of direction and short attention span” While her unique upbringing made schooling difficult in some regards, it also brought many crucial formative experiences which helped to shape the person Anne is today. For instance, instead of sitting in a public school classroom, there were points where she spent her days in a 19th century museum as a homeschooled student, or in her grandfather's workshop. This helped her to develop an early interest in woodworking, hand tools, and farming. “So it was kind of at the back of my mind, always from, you know, from that living history museum and my experience with my grandfather that someday, if I ever lived in America, I wanted to have my own farm. And I wanted to have my own workshop where I could do and fix anything that I wanted.” Fast forward many years, Anne moved back to the U.S. from Taiwan to pursue a tech job in Seattle, WA. On the side, she continued developing her hand skills and engineering mindset by buying cheap tools, reverse engineering them, selling them, then buying new tools until she eventually had a full workshop to use. “...I had no intention of ever, you know, doing all this stuff for a living. But the more tools that I acquired and the more hand skills that I learned, the more passionate about it I got, and the more dissatisfied with my job that I got. And I basically realized then that I wanted to figure out a way out of that lifestyle.” Eventually, Anne leveraged her workshop to start woodworking. After a while, she quit her job to build furniture full-time, ended up failing, and learned from her mistakes to bring her to the next opportunity. She recalls: “I quit my job working in tech because I wanted to spend less time working at the computer. But then all of a sudden, I had to figure out how to make a website and I had to become my own accountant and I had to market my stuff. And I had to send invoices and all those things that like, took all this computer time. And suddenly I was actually in the shop even less.” After this chain of events, Anne eventually was lead in the right direction through connections she made on Instagram. One thing lead to another, and she landed a job at a Fine Arts Center, where she entirely revamped their woodworking program. “...I ended up getting a job running a woodworking program at a Fine Arts Center. And so that was basically my ticket into doing this full time for a living again. And through that they basically needed someone to revamp their entire education program. So I got to hire new teachers and right new course curriculum. And basically, I created the...

Thurston Joseph Moore (born July 25, 1958) is an American musician best known as a member of Sonic Youth. He has also participated in many solo and group collaborations outside Sonic Youth, as well as running the Ecstatic Peace! record label. Thurston Moore's work with Sonic Youth rearranged the parameters of indie rock to an almost incalculable degree, merging experimental art rock tendencies with unconventional guitar tunings for a sound that would influence generations to come. Moore's abstract poetic lyrics and perpetually mysterious aura were core ingredients of Sonic Youth's 30-plus-year run, but also bled into countless side projects and less-frequent solo albums like 1994's sprawling and loose Psychic Hearts. After the group's breakup in 2011, Moore continued with his ambitions, ranging from projects like his band Chelsea Light Moving to noisy collaborations with Merzbow and John Zorn to solo albums like 2020's By the Fire that continued exploring the kind of moody, twisting art rock he'd become an icon of with Sonic Youth. Moore was ranked 34th in Rolling Stone's 2004 edition of the '100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.' In May 2012, Spin published a staff-selected list of the top 100 rock guitarists, and ranked Moore and his Sonic Youth bandmate Lee Ranaldo together at number 1. Lineup: Tapper Zukie, Patti Smith, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, MARS, Public Image Ltd., The Slits, The Raincoats, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, Alice Cooper, T. Rex, Archie Shepp, Billie Holiday, Teddy Wilson, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Dinosaur Jr., Jackson C. One of the most fascinating things we love about musicians, is when they decide to completely change their direction. Whether thats musical direction or they simply fall out of love with the business. We have all experienced moments when our favourite music icons leave their fans confused and scratching their heads, wondering what happened. Or in some cases when it's an ex band member, who completely rips the band apart with them to go do something else. In this podcast episode we look at a few female artists that interest both Ian and Mick and explore the music they started creating and then suddenly decided to change direction in music or actually quit altogether. This episode looks at their reasons for doing so, was it the right choice or should they have stayed? Our hosts discuss stars such as Alanis Morisette, Anne Briggs and Bobby Gentry and the fascinating stories on both their music and lives.

VIPop #35 Without looking for it in the least, James Yorkston has become a kind of master-standard of folk-music ... For the last twenty years, this Scottish singer-songwriter has made this territory his playground and exploration, by bringing in a pop and libertarian spirit, in particular ... And he's as moving as he's just on totally stripped down songs that he's warmly communicative on songs with more lyrical flights, often shared with other excellent musicians ... And you know why ? ... Simply because James Yorkston has a talent and a heart so huge ! ❤ … ❤ … Support us!

Power Tools. Just about everyone uses them today to one extent or another. There are exceptions of course, but they have been a large part of the maker world for over a century. This time we wanted to talk about them. Which one's do you need, which are a waste of money and which ones are just nice to have for that one off piece you may make once or twice a year. Homesteading. It’s a term that’s associated with the expansion of the United States in the 1800’s but a new generation of self-reliant entrepreneurs has adopted the term and lifestyle and turned it into an attractive option for a broad number of people who are willing to work hard towards providing for themselves and their families. With the current pandemic, it’s become increasingly apparent how reliant our society has become on outside food, resources, and essential items that we need and want everyday. It’s exposed weaknesses in our food and other supply chains that are ultimately felt on an individual level. Today’s instructor, Anne Briggs of Anne of All Trades, has been working for years towards building a lifestyle of self-sufficiency and has a big head start on the rest of us. She started her own homestead in Seattle years ago and has recently moved to the Nashville area where she’s starting from scratch with a new homesteading project. From gardening to raising livestock, woodworking to blacksmithing, Anne has learned on the fly with a fearless do-it-yourself attitude that has made her not only a successful homesteader, but also a social media sensation who shares her can-do attitude with her large following. By the end of this class you’ll have an idea of what it takes to create your own homestead, how you can identify things around your yard that you could add to your diet, and how you can start with some small changes to create a more self-sufficient lifestyle. Class is in session. Gardening isn’t as hard as you think! Anne mentioned: Raised beds, hugelkultur and planting simple beds with wood chips as examples of easy gardening. Check out the tutorials on her site. Check out this app to identify plants: Picture This Can you afford to homestead? Anne makes sure every investment pays for itself. Some things she does to offset costs is participating in a heard-share, selling eggs and using social media for extra income. Have a tiny space? You can do so much with a balcony or window sill. Grow plants on your kitchen counter! Get involved in your local CSA’s, visit farmers markets and join your local homesteading and gardening groups on Facebook. HOMEWORK: Go outside and plant something edible! FIND ANNE: WEBSITE INSTAGRAM FACEBOOK
This week we tune in with a few of our friends from past episodes, we got dressed up, and had a beverage together. We even had to kick someone out for not looking good enough! This is probably a fully dysfunctional conversation to try to listen to, but it's worth noting- Anne Briggs showed up in a wedding dress.
Tonight we chat with Anne about some trades, carrying around a goldfish, peeing in buckets, the Twighlight Saga, impersonating a police officer, and much more.

He is an interesting personality equally happy talking about, folk music, films or philosophy In January 2019 David released a 6 track EP entitled 'Figures and Faces' now available on Amazon, iTunes etc. Invisible Folk Club's Jon Bickley was asked to write the sleeve notes, this is what he had to say: 'It’s hard to say where David comes from. His family is from Sri Lanka and he comes from London but when you listen to his songs there is an other-worldly quality to them. It might be because of his mellifluous voice. It might be his light touch on his Martin guitar. Or it might be his beguiling tales of far-off forest glades, caves and towers, happy tribes challenged or dancing spirits. With the whispers of Gillian Welch and Anne Briggs hovering around him, he casts a spell with every performance. There is a disarming brightness about his presence and his devotion to his craft is clear for all to hear.' https://www.davidgunawardana.com/ https://www.facebook.com/davidgunawardanamusic/

Our guest this week is Anne Briggs. Anne grew up on Montana and spent a lot of her young life abroad because her parents are missionaries. She majored in Chinese and Business hoping to become an international business mogul, but quickly realized that working in the tech industry wasn't a life she wanted to live. So she started a garden and built a workshop in her spare time. One thing led to another and now she's a farmer, woodworker, blacksmith, musician, and full-time content creator. This week on the podcast we have special guest Anne Briggs (a.k.a. Anne of All Trades) to talk with us about raising laying hens at home. We had so much to talk about on the subject that we ended up breaking this topic into two episodes. This week, in Part 1, we discuss Anne's favorite breeds of chickens, how to source your own laying hens, and the egg laying cycle.
