Show NotesWe hear a lot about electrification as quickly as possible, but most of that takes the electric grid for granted that it can handle the demand. But our guest today, Apoorv Bhargava, points out that the demand posed by electric cars is akin to putting industrial levels of demand in every residential neighborhood. With ⅓ of new cars in the US being electric by next year, the capacity just isn't there.WeaveGrid, which Apoorv co-founded, partners with utilities and automakers to make EV charging more reliable and flexible to deal with this rapidly increasing demand - and to take advantage of new opportunities, like the fact that many families will have giant batteries on wheels sitting unused at night. In This Episode:⚡ Why a single EV can have the same power demand as 2-3 homes⚡ The surprising bottleneck to decarbonization (Hint: It's not generation)⚡ Why charging at 10PM may not be the best solution for the grid⚡ The role of AI and automation in optimizing EV charging⚡ The lack of standardized protocols for EV-grid communication⚡ How WeaveGrid is building the most sophisticated EV Virtual Power Plant (VPP)⚡ The real challenge: Consumers don't want decarbonization, they want reliability!Apoorv also shares hot takes on EV adoption, public charging infrastructure, and the future of AI in energy, plus why software engineers should consider working in climate tech.About Our Guest:Apoorv Bhargavahttps://www.linkedin.com/in/apoorv-bhargava/Apoorv has spent over 12 years at the intersection of climate, energy, and technology, driving innovation in utility software, grid management, and electrification. EVs are a huge piece of the decarbonization puzzle. But as Apoorv Bhargava realized over his career working in the power business, utilities across the country aren't prepared for the cost of onboarding the millions of EVs needed on the road. A 2019 report from Boston Consulting Group found that it could cost a utility that serves two to three million customers, anywhere between $1,700 to $5,800 in grid upgrades per EV.Apoorv wants to avoid that. As CEO and co-founder of WeaveGrid, his team provides utilities with the software to connect and manage EVs, while getting more EVs on the grid by using data to anticipate demand in different areas. After more than a decade working on the energy transition in different capacities, Apoorv combined his experience in tech, consulting, and business by launching WeaveGrid with co-founder John Taggart in 2018.This week, Brad talked with Apoorv about how WeaveGrid's technology is built to serve the interest of customers and utilities alike, and the levers needed to spur change in the private sector. This podcast is produced by GridX. GridX is the Enterprise Rate Platform that modern utilities rely on to usher in our clean energy future.

Business and governments have the unique responsibility to foster innovation that breeds new technologies, especially ones that enable humanity to achieve net zero. While the more recognizable way is via a maverick engineer who inspires venture capital firms to invest in her idea, there is a second method. That method is "grand challenges," or competitions with a stated goal, like removing millions of tons of carbon a year), and offering up a prize money for the winners, also in the millions of dollars. Carbon Upcycling is a leading carbon to value (also known as carbon utilization) company that has participated in multiple climate-focused grand challenges and has a number of lessons to share with future participants. Joining The Net Zero Life to share those lessons, along with frameworks for leading a net zero start-up in a oil and gas heavy state, is Madison Savilow, Chief of Staff, and Apoorv Sinha, co-founder and CEO. Carbon Upcycling is a Carbon X-Prize X-Factor award winner, an Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) Grand Challenge Semi-finalist, and has received support from various provincial and federal entities in Canada. In 2017, CUT became the youngest CO2 utilization company to commercialize a product from CO2 emissions. Apoorv Sinha is the co-founder and CEO of Carbon Upcycling Technologies, he is a Forbes 30 Under 30 Energy awardee (2020), a Clean 50 Honoree (2021), he's an alumnus of the Energy Futures Lab, a 2016 Leading Change delegate, a Clean50 Emerging Leader 2016, and has served on the ACTia (Alberta Cleantech Industrial Alliance) Board of Directors (2017-19). M4Edge is about startups with technologies that can change how the economy functions. There’s very little that is as central to a functioning economy as energy, and that’s one reason why climate change is such a deep societal problem. There are also very few industries that are as important to a growing economy as the construction industry. And so today’s episode is one of a two-part miniseries on technologies that are aimed at the greening of the construction industry. Interestingly, both of our guests were recently named to the prestigious Forbes 30 under 30 list, for energy. Today’s guest is Apoorv Sinha of Carbon Upcycling Technologies, or CUT. CUT takes captured CO2 and then basically stores it, but not underground, as is one popular solution, but in commercial products. In fact, the presence of the carbon in the products, like cement, for example, actually makes the products more cost effective to produce because you use less original material, and it gives the products some enhanced qualities. It’s the trifecta. Better cost efficiency, better product, better environment. This is the kind of solution where, if it manages to scale, could be deeply impactful. Please review our show on Apple Podcasts and please share with anyone you think might be interested! As always, enjoy the episode and thanks for being curious!

What's common between iPhone and Slack? Along with them being amazing products, both iPhone and Slack delivered great customer experience and altered the market in a big way! It's not like smart phones didn't exist before the iPhone - remember Blackberry? Surely there were several other office communicators before Slack was launched. Both these products massively enhanced the customer experience. Interestingly, both iPhone and Slack gave birth to a new product segment and we've all seen how the market got crowded with competing products within a year or so. The role of customer experience is undeniable when you study the history of any pathbreaking product. In this episode with Apoorv Gawde, CIO and Head of Products at Finzy, I am discussing how design thinking and customer experience focus can be used to create products that carve a new market segment. We dive into the product design process and customer experience strategy that helped Finzy build a market defining product. Among other things, we talked about: - The design principles to stick to when building any new product. - The novelty of Finzy and how it was designed into the product for creating a new market segment. - How customer feedback is used in product development to deliver better customer experience? This episode is a must listen for any product owner or product manager who believes that a product's primary purpose is to deliver a great customer experience. “Carbon policy writ large … has not gone far enough to drive industrial players to change how they do business. In the interim, until policy catches up, or if the global sentiment gets to a point where there is a carbon tax around the world, the onus is on the entrepreneur to make a business case for today.” Apoorv Sinha is the Founder and CEO of Carbon Upcycling Technologies (CUT), a Canadian cleantech startup that is turning CO2 waste into a profitable commodity. CUT’s proprietary technology manufactures CO2-enriched nanomaterials, improving the performance and value of concrete, polymers and adhesives, and energy storage products. CUT is a finalist for the Carbon XPRIZE, and Apoorv has been honored as a Clean 50 Emerging Leader. Today, Apoorv joins Christophe and Alexsandra to introduce the concept of upcycling and explain the company’s intention to use today’s pollution to create the materials of tomorrow. He describes CUT’s manhole solution as well as its innovation in the realm of cement and plastics. Apoorv also shares his take on how policymakers can best facilitate innovation and scale in the climate solutions space. This one was pretty fun. It was a very loose episode with a lot of stupid jokes. Kanye, you better believe I'm gonna rant about you on the next episode. Apoorv put some effort in and made some timestamps that won't really make sense unless you've already listened to the episode: 00:00:26 - correlation of brownies and mangos or rillos? 00:03:21 - your ferm is spertile 00:04:50 - the whitest flavor 00:05:10 - hurricane Florence is a lying whore 00:07:43 - the most confusing analogy 00:09:14 - so much HIP HOP 00:19:55 - noise complaint 00:21:14 - The secret behind nickelodeon slime 00:24:44 - Some hardcore football talk 00:30:45 - Big Ben and the president 00:33:00 - pornstar appreciation 00:35:29 - walking dead needs to chill 00:39:10 - greatest penis debate of all time 00:43:25 - Bill Burr…you can hear one of us cum at the sound of Bill Burr 00:52:15 - Bojack the Horse who is a Man 00:55:25 - Marky Mark being Marky Mark 00:59:56 - funniest old woman story
On a delayed episode 3, we discuss the unfortunate passing of xxxtentacion and the reactions seen on social media. Apoorv's very white hip hop taste is dissected, my inability to get a tattoo is laid out there, and we discuss the comedy superstar John Mulaney. There's some other shit in there, too.

We re-released the Omi interview from the OG podcast, "Indian, American" to revisit the themes and topics brought up then and see how they hold up. Our discussion started off with a conversation about how Omi used comedy as a defense in his childhood and quickly moved to a conversation about compassion. Compassion in the way we deal with other peoples boundaries, and compassion as it relates to comedy. We then move to the topic of what Omi meant by, "India is relationships" where Akaash and I give our different interpretations. I am right of course. During our community section we revisit the caste system in response to an email that Apoorv sent and its my turn to say my piece. enjoy!
