As the growth of the EV market and Energy Storage continues unabated, we wanted to know what the current State of Play in the Battery industry is.In 2023, China dominates the Li_Ion battery market and its main companies, BYD and CATL are – alongside Tesla – blazing the trail of new technologies and performances. Are there options beyond Lithium? How much progress have the battery technologies recently made? Where is the path forward for all the announced chemistries? Is vertical integration a real trend? Can the US and EU catch up?We discuss with Cormac O'Laoire, Managing Director at Electrios Energy, a Hong-Kong based expert; it becomes obvious that China and the rest of the world are on the cusp on diverging, adopting different technological pathways in term of Battery Chemistry. We talk about LFP/LMFP – Lithium Ferro Phosphate / Lithium Manganese Ferro Phosphate vs NMC – Nickel Manganese Cobalt. We talk about Sodium-Ion, Solid State… We talk prices. We try to foresee what will stay and what will go.A fascinating deep dive with one of the world's most recognised expert on battery supply chain. Who will win, who will catch-up, who will lose. We see clearer after this thorough conversation with Cormac. ----We thank our long tem partner Aquila Capital whithout whom this show wouldn't probably exist.

We find lithium-ion batteries everywhere. In our smartphones, remotes, and even our cars. And we might think they are the best because they are ubiquitous. But the main issue with Li-ion batteries is their durability. Scientists at the Technische Universität Wien (TU Wien) in Austria have developed a new battery that is made of incombustible and common materials, is able to regenerate, and has an unrivalled long life service. Welcome to the world of oxygen-ion batteries. https://todaysfocusofattention.com/the-next-battery-breakthrough-introducing-oxygen-ion-technology-as-an-alternative-to-li-ion/
We discovered Simon Moores, CEO of Benchmark Minerals Intelligence, on YouTube, during a legendary testimony during the US Senate in 2019. Simon just blew our mind, so it had been an ambition for this show to bring him on. And we did. With Simon, we analyse the whole supply chain of batteries, from mining (lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite) to refining, down to the Gigafactories. The battery industry has managed to scale x10 in the past six years and is expected to x8-x10 (depending on who you listen to) in the current decade. That would allow the electrification of the whole transportation sector! Is there enough raw materials in the ground, are we going to go from one dependency to another? Can lithium be replaced? How is the state of the Nickel market after the 2022 meltdown? Can we create supply chains outside China? What is the impact of the IRA in the US? Will automakers get more involved in mining (we just witnessed the spectacular investment of GM in Thacker Pass)? Is there a new battery technology that would dent the domination of the Li-Ion batteries? All those questions are so much more in a very lively discussion with Simon.(We refer to Joe Lowry, that we respect and salute) ---------------Benchmark Mineral Intelligence is an independent price reporting agency (PRA), data and supply chain intelligence provider for the lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle industry. In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Sophia Chen interviews Bin Ouyang of Florida State University about making a better cathode for lithium ion batteries. The current use of cobalt and nickel in their cathodes causes Li-ion batteries to contract in volume and degrade. Ouyang and his colleagues simulated and then fabricated new cathode materials that do not use cobalt or nickel and also degrade less after being charged and discharged. To achieve this, they found that they needed to design a material with disorder in its crystal structure. They found that replacing cobalt and nickel with vanadium and niobium leads to a battery with a small change of volume. The results provide a model for the further search of viable cathode materials to design lithium-ion batteries that are entirely made of solids. This study is published in Joules (doi:10.1016/j.joule.2022.05.018).

We don't have a future without it. So say these talented entrepreneurs who are doing something about it.
We don't have a future without it. So say these talented entrepreneurs who are doing something about it. My guests this week are Filip Westerlund who developed Our Choice, Antoine Welter and Xavier Kohll who founded Circu Li-ion. Our Choice Whilst studying for his masters in psychology at the University of Luxembourg, Filip Westerlund started his company, Our Choice. The idea was borne on the shores of western Sweden, cleaning up plastics on the beach. Filip naturally has high energy but preserves his entrepreneurial panache with the basic rules of eating well, sleep and doing something completely different to avoid burn-out. He also practices acceptance and tries to focus on the goal, the action. 25 billion sneakers are produced every year, and 90% of these end up in landfills. On average, trainers are used for 3 - 12 months and then disposed. Filip believes in longer use period, then repair and recycle. Filip is also integral in growing the fashion community here in Luxembourg, growing together and not competitively. Filip has won numerous awards including those by the Ministry of Economy in Luxembourg, and he was dubbed 'the most influential circular economy Entrepreneur and Pioneer on the continent of Europe'! Our Choice launched "The world's first circular sneakers” on Kickstarter in 2021 raising over $10,000 within a week. The product range now also sells circular cardholders made from upcycled fish skin and soon to come are circular sunglasses. The company is now planning for a pivot as Filip and his team are building a marketplace for verified circular products to unite the full supply chain and establish new market standards in fashion. Circuli - ion Antoine Welter and Xavier Kohll are the founders of Circu li-ion - upcycling Li-ion batteries from the automotive sector and power tools, and building CO2 neutral energy storage systems. Antoine first came across Xavier on LinkedIn. Immediately there was a spark of mutual respect and values. Their first shared brainstorming google doc, formed after a stroll in the woods, was 'Bring Entrepreneurship back to Luxembourg', at a time when neither was living in Luxembourg. However, Xavier wanted to return and Antoine wanted to work with Xavier. They wanted to build a business with purpose and mission. Their idea focusses on high density lithium batteries, a key technology which we will increasingly need we need to become a green economy in the future. It's green but could be a lot greener. Currently when batteries are 'recycled' they are burned. Their aim is to maximise the lifetime of Li-ion batteries, and the growth rate is huge. Antoine is the CEO of Circu Li-ion and carries the American 'can do' attitude having spent part of his youth there. His masters in Finance and Marketing has been put to good use in the 15+ ventures he has been involved with. Xavier is the CTO, whose PhD in Chemical engineering is from ETH Zürich. He's leading the development of the automated battery disassembly system, and looking for highly skilled engineers in various fields. "It's challenging and therefore super interesting", says Xavier, Antoine takes on the mantle of business brain. He is well connected across Europe and complimentary of the help available from the Luxembourg government. Even so, he believes the government could help rather easily with more traction. Some entrepreneurial advice from the pair: Fail fast and iterate Be extremely complementary as a founding duo And as a consumer, be a thoughtful user. [comments]
So we all know batteries burn... but do we know what exactly does burn? What is inside this tiny metal cylinder that scares so many of us? We try to understand it a bit more with Dr Francesco Restuccia of Kings College London, who is an expert in battery fire safety and self-heating. And this combination of skills gave him a unique view of the challenges of fire safety of batteries - especially the ones that are stored in warehouses and not fueling anything. Francesco takes me on a journey into the world of cathodes, anodes and electrol... I mean battery juice. Knowing what is inside and why it burns is fundamental to understanding how can we protect the world from the risks arising from Li-ION batter technology. And I hope this podcast episode is a concise introduction to this! And here is a paper choice curated by Francesco, containing the important papers discussed within the episode (because we discuss real science here! :))X. The deployment of Li-Ion batteries has exploded in recent years and is expected to enjoy a 30% annual growth until 2030. But those very critical pieces of hardware need a brain to fully function, and that is where software kicks in. In fact, they are two layers of software: the operating system, monitoring the functioning of the battery and the cloud system that interacts with the global electricity system and the power markets. Managing batteries revenues widely differs from geography to geography. Revenues can be categorised in three captions: a) short term ancillary service: daily auctions for primary, secondary, and tertiary reserve b) wholesale electricity market: day-ahead, intraday and imbalance markets; c) long-term auctions such as capacity schemes, voltage control, and last reserve. The battery management software must adapt to those different revenue stacks. So, how are the software developed, managed? How do they evolve? We have the pleasure of welcoming Seyed Madaeni, Chief Digital Officer at Fluence, to discuss those fascinating subjects. Finally, we do a deep dive into the economics of Fluence and have a go at the newly listed (and supposedly competitor) Energy Vault. We thank Aquila Capital for supporting the show.If you want more from Gerard and Laurent, check our sister podcast: Redefining Energy MINUTES, available on all main podcasts platforms.

Why the aviation industry remains one of the hardest to electrify? Is Lithium-ion the best battery technology for the job? What are the most viable alternatives? We will try to answer these questions with one of the leading experts in the field of battery science.Venkat Viswanathan is an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University, where he leads a research lab focusing on aviation and transportation applications of battery technology.Venkat, who is also an advisor to several green energy firms, has recently co-authored two papers outlining the learnings of his research in this field and explaining why incremental improvement of Li-Ion batteries may not be enough for a more wide-ranging electrification of the aviation industry. A new paradigm is needed in battery chemistry, one based on new materials and underpinned by novel research and production techniques, involving robotics and machine learning. Lithium-metal batteries and even more advanced combinations that use non-metallic elements may hold the key to the sort of energy density increases that will make the electrification of broader segments of the aviation industry feasible. In addition to his work at the very edge of this technological frontier, Venkat is also an excellent communicator, able to explain complex scientific concepts in a straightforward and understandable way to broad non-scientific audiences. It is because of all this that I invite you to check today's episode out to get a grasp of the current state of battery science and its potential applications in the aviation industry!

What are the technological options to compensate for – as the German say - the “Dunkelflaute” (dark doldrums), those winter weeks of low winds and low solar? That's the code that will have to be cracked by Long Duration Energy Storage (above 8 hours and up to several days). Because, if no realistic solution is implemented in the coming years, we will still have gas peakers in the XXIIth century.Gerard and Laurent have invited Michael Barnard, an internationally recognised technology cleantech consultant, with world-class expertise on grid storage technology, electrification, and hydrogen. Together we review and analyse the various options: how far can Li-Ion batteries get us to? How to maximise the value of pumped hydro storage? How to scale flow batteries? Can we even rely of more breakthrough technologies? It will take time, will need government intervention, energy market reforms, but the solutions are there. Long Duration Energy Storage is definitely the “Final Frontier”.ReferencesDisclaimer: Michael works as adviser for Agora Energy Technologies - https://agoraenergy.ca/ Prices of batteries: https://about.bnef.com/blog/battery-pack-prices-cited-below-100-kwh-for-the-first-time-in-2020-while-market-average-sits-at-137-kwh/MIT research:https://news.mit.edu/2021/powering-energy-transition-better-storage-0329https://www.nature.com/articles/s41560-021-00796-8

Californian battery startup Cuberg made headlines in March 2021 when it was announced that it has been acquired by Northvolt, the large battery manufacturer from Sweden. What did Northvolt see in Cuberg? Mainly the Li-Metal battery technology that Cuberg is developing, that is expected to deliver a 70% performance improvement over the current generation of Li-Ion batteries. This makes of the batteries that Cuberg is currently developing particularly interesting for the nascent electric aviation industry.Today on the podcast we are going to talk about all this, as well as about the current state of battery technologies for air mobility, with Richard Wang, the founder and CEO of Cuberg.Together with Richard, we are going to review the current state and prospects of the battery industry for air mobility purposes. He is also going to share some details about the Lithium-Metal technology they are developing at Cuberg and their plans to move into industrial-scale production in order to power the new generation of eVTOLs that is expected to (silently) buzz the skies of our cities in the near future.Tune in for a chat at the very edge of the science of batteries!

How does a Li-ion battery differ from the ones you use in a torch? What makes it so special that its development even was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2019? And what’s the deal with the whiskers? In this episode of Science on surfaces we talk to Prof. Erik Berg about the fascinating area of Li-ion batteries. Prof. Berg is Associate senior lecturer and Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory, and Structural Chemistry at Uppsala University in Sweden. Prof. Berg takes us on an interesting and educational journey through area of batteries in general, and Li-ion batteries in particular. He teaches us about the five key aspects of battery performance - aspects that are more or less important depending on the intended battery application, but where no single battery type gets top score in all five areas. We also get to learn about the history of battery development - why and how they were invented, how the area has evolved over the years and how scientists have been scouting the periodic table to find suitable battery materials. Prof. Berg explains why the Li-ion battery is so special, and why dendrite formation, or whiskers as they are also called, are so problematic and certainly should be avoided in a battery. And – he shares the story of when he met one of the laureates who was awarded the Nobel prize for the development of this exceptional type of battery. Thanks for listening! Q & A Presents: Maui Online! – Hawaii's Only Computer Talk Show!
A tech reporter from Ananadtech did research finding that one smartphone company’s fast-recharge tech ages your battery prematurely. Wowzers! How do you keep your laptop, phone, and tablet batteries going for a long time? The Battery Episode Taking care of your laptop batteries! https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/how-to-care-for-your-laptops-battery/ Laptop batteries have a lifespan of X-many power cycles (0%-100%). Going from 100% to 0% is one power cycle. Going from 100% to 50% is half a power cycle. Cycles are like mileage. As the battery gets older and has more cycles, it starts holding less charge per cycle. Using your laptop’s more power efficient settings will help you get more mileage out of each charge. Windows Battery Saver – https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/component-guidelines/battery-saver Windows Power Slider – https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/windows-10-give-power-slider-optimize-speed-battery Mac Energy Saver – https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202824 Shutting down programs or suspending services (like cloud services), wifi, etc., when not in use will help extend battery life. Reducing screen brightness will help as well. Nickel-Metal hydride (NiMH) versus Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) Old NiMH batteries used to develop “memories,” where they would not fully charge. This was a problem with the tech at the time. Li-Ion doesn’t have this problem. You do NOT have to completely discharge the battery before recharging a Li-Ion. Best practice is currently getting down to maybe 20% or so before recharging. You CAN keep Li-Ion batteries plugged in as power management is better now, and the device should stop charging once it hits 100%. Keeping it comfortable. Batteries do not like to get hot! If you’re doing resource heavy work, be sure to give your ... Read More

Show #678 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 26th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new PATREON PRODUCER PRAT KODE AIWAYS U5 FOR EUROPE Aiways will make history when order books for its U5 all-electric SUV open at this year’s Geneva Motor Show by becoming the first Chinese car brand to sell an electric car in the European market. The big question that Aiways hopes to answer: can China compete with Europe, in Europe, and succeed?" is the question asked by CleanTechnica: "About the size of an Audi Q5, the Aiways U5 seats 5 and offers a 190 HP electric motor. Aiways plans to deliver 2000 units to customers in its first year, ostensibly to focus on delivering both build quality and customer service that are on par with what its European customer expect. Assuming things go well, Aiways can “flip a switch” and deliver 50,000 (fifty-thousand) units to European customers in calendar year 2021. Assuming they can sell 50,000 of the things, that is, but with a price tag expected to be somewhat less than 30,000 Euro, maybe that’s not such a huge ask?" https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/25/aiways-u5-set-to-become-first-chinese-ev-in-europe/ TESLA MODEL S, MODEL X IN FOR VARIETY OF UPDATES, LEAK SUGGESTS "Tesla might be ready to pull the trigger on updates for its two flagship models, the Model S sedan and Model X SUV. According to a well-known Tesla "hacker," who's often dug into Tesla software in the vehicle to find clues about the future, everything from battery updates to a new suspension version is in the cards." says CNET: "The hacker, who goes by "Green" on Twitter posted last Friday to share the things he found buried in Tesla's software, which funny enough, revolves around hardware. Among the mentions, there may be an inductive phone charger, updated lumbar for the seats, a new charging port and some sort of new suspension. The biggest piece of information is the mention of two new Model S and Model X battery types in a handful of configurations. However, mention of the phone charger may be a clue about a long-rumored interior refresh for the Model S and Model X." https://www.cnet.com/news/tesla-model-3-nhtsa-investigation-unintended-acceleration/ EVOKE’S MODERATELY PRICED ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES EXPAND TO EU AND AUSTRALIA "Evoke Motorcycles, a Beijing-based electric motorcycle manufacturer, has found success in its domestic market with highway-capable electric motorcycles. Now the company is ready to test the international market with operations in Europe and Australia." reports MIcah TOll for Electrek: "According to a statement sent to Electrek by Evoke, the company already has dealers operating in Austria and Hungary. Now the company has brought on Chreter Australia as its Evoke distributor in the land down under. Chreter will offer Evoke’s two current models, the Evoke Urban and Evoke Urban S. It will also provide after-service in Australia for the two electric motorcycles. Both models received updates for the 2020 model year to improve their performance. Evoke’s 2020 Urban electric motorcycles are rated with a maximum speed of 130 km/h (81 mph). The bikes are powered by a 19 kW (25 hp) rear hub motor. The 2020 Urban series has a 8.4kWh battery pack offering a useable capacity of 7.6kWh.They’re designed to be affordable commuter electric motorcycles with prices in the neighborhood of US$7,900." https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/23/evoke-electric-motorcycles-expand-to-eu-australia/#aprd ID.3 TO BECOME AVAILABLE FOR ORDER IN APRIL "German electric car rental company Nextmove has revealed further details of the market launch of the VW ID.3 with reference to a document from France. Orders for the First Edition should apparently be possible from April. The series version will also be available from May, initially with 58 kWh and 45 kWh batteries." according to Chris Randall in electrive: "While it is no secret that the First Edition will be available to 40,000 pre-orderers throughout Europe from summer (if they make a binding order from their reservation), now it seems that deliveries of the series versions with 58 kWh and 45 kWh batteries will start in September and October respectively. The launch was announced for 2020 and Volkswagen is taking this seriously, although we might assume that since no mention has been made of the most powerful version with a 77 kWh battery, its market launch is expected to take place after 2020. The installation of a heat pump helps to save energy in winter conditions and thus indirectly gains range. The Volkswagen specification of 60 kilometres range gain refers to an outside temperature of +5 to -10 degrees Celsius. It is not clear how much customers have to pay for the heat pump in the freely configurable series models. Of the three equipment lines the heat pump is only on board with the maximum equipment for the First Edition presented by VW. In the meantime, the First Edition is no longer available to reserve in Germany." https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/23/id-3-to-become-available-for-order-in-april/ LONDON BOOSTS SCRAPPAGE SCHEME TO £9,500 TOWARDS ELECTRIC VANS "London has doubled the scrappage scheme grant available to those switching their old van or minibus to a newer Ultra Low Emission Zone compliant model. The changes mean there is now £7,000 available for eligible models - jumping to £9,500 for those switching to an electric model." says Next Green Car: "Criteria have been changed to make it easier to access the funding too. The old system saw £3,500 available to either buy a Euro 6 vehicle or access third party offers such as vehicle hire or sharing services. Those switching to EVs got up to £6,000, and any access to scrappage scheme funding required drivers to have made at least 52 trips into the Congestion Charge Zone in the six months prior to the scheme’s introduction. The requirement is now only 26 trips completed. Equally, firms with fewer than 10 employees could access funding, whereas the limit is now up to 50 employees. Grants are on top of the existing Plug-in Van Grants, which apply to all eligible electric vans and takes up to 20% off the value of the vehicle - up to a maximum of £8,000." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8838/london-boosts-scrappage-scheme-to-9500-towards-electric-vans/ TESLA CYBERTRUCK SPIED FILMING SEGMENT FOR JAY LENO’S GARAGE WITH ELON MUSK "Tesla CEO Elon Musk and the futuristic Cybertruck were caught filming near SpaceX headquarters late Friday afternoon for an upcoming segment of Jay Leno’s Garage. Once again taking the spotlight at the Tesla Design Center in Hawthorne, CA, the site where the all-electric utility truck made its shocking world debut, camera and production crew were setting up to film a scene near the famed Tesla Supercharger monolith." says Teslarati: "Elon Musk can be seen inspecting the rear of the Cybertruck and its motorized rear tonneau, as film crew busily prepared equipment for the camera truck that would follow the stainless steel pickup past SpaceX. Cameras rolled as the Tesla Cybertruck made its way onto Crenshaw Blvd. in Hawthorne, CA, with the iconic Falcon 9 booster and SpaceX headquarters framed perfectly in the background. A black truck with a camera rig flanked the electric pickup truck.m While Teslarati did not spot the Model Y in Friday’s filming of the Cybertruck, rumors surfaced last week that Tesla’s much-awaited electric crossover Model Y will also be featured on Jay Leno’s long-running car show. This information was reportedly shared to a certain Tesla Model 3 owner Michael Hughes by a Tesla employee who gave him an early tour of the Model Y interior." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-cybertruck-spy-shot-jay-lenos-garage-design-center/ MINI ELECTRIC IN ALPS: FROM MUNICH TO SÖLDEN WITHOUT RECHARGE "The new all-electric MINI Cooper SE is the ideal companion for short city getaways. On a single battery recharge, you can leave Munich to visit the beautiful Alpine winter resort of Sölden, which is precisely 200 kilometers away, in Austria." according to BMW Blog: "Depending on road and weather conditions, the new MINI Cooper SE will boast a pure electric somewhere between 235 kilometers and 270 kilometers, so the 200-kilometer trip from the Bavarian capital city up to Austrian ski resort of Sölden shouldn’t be a problem to cover without recharging the battery. When the MINI Cooper SE finally reached its destination, it still had an adequate level of energy content in the high-voltage Li-Ion battery. Furthermore, the climate control system of the MINI Electric is designed to use the residual heat dissipated by the electric motor, the drive control systems and the battery as to heat up the interior during winter. The combined electricity consumption is calculated between 14.8 and 16.8 kWh per 100 kilometers." https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/01/23/with-the-mini-electric-in-alps-from-munich-to-solden-without-recharge/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK DRK The vandalism, bullying and outright hostility towards objects from strangers is not so much about the cars ( it only appears so on the surface) but is in reality a disturbing look at the mental health or lack thereof of our population at large. Otherwise "normal" people suddenly keying cars ( which still happens to cars no matter which brand with or without alarms etc) and other signs of frustration and anger is a look at the tenuous hold average people have in our society for the stresses of life, health, economic and mental pressures of modern day living. You can see this in any online forum or comment section and our "leaders" are increasingly looking less balanced as well. (I live in the USA so lots to look at) and it is not party based. People are unfortunately not doing as well as the thin veneer of "modern civilization" would lead one to believe. FROM ROOSTER #EV #Tesla envy same reason as for all other forms of envy, lack of brain cells ! DONALD RS The reason I think that people have a problem with EVs or that I think only the rich can afford the EVs this is a way they can put a thumb or finger up at a e v a rich person and are things I think there are again EVsis because of the fact that they feel threatened are there fossil burning car is being lost FUTURE SYSTEM Sadly, I think ALL nice cars are potentially subject to vandalism, and break in’s etc. That’s nothing new. A friend of mine had a very nice European sports car in the ‘70’s, and it was vandalised twice, (keys down the side!), and broken in to once. He got to the stage where he wouldn’t even park it in most public places. It’s nothing to do with being an EV or a Tesla, but only Tesla’s are smart enough to record the perpetrators on video. STEPHEN TROYER People have a problem with EVs because change is scary, making a change of lifestyle is inconvenient, and many times they feel personally attacked when someone says an EV is better in every way (performance, comfort, safety, cost of ownership). Beyond that, I think there is a type of person who will target any nice-looking car, and it's just that more of them get caught when they vandalize a brand new EV because of all the cameras and tech. Romain Hedouin • 4 days ago I don't know if people vandalize Teslas because they're EV I think people vandalize any car, it's just that Teslas are pretty much the only ones able to record in ~360 degree view Also they're seen as luxurious so jealous haters obviously vandalize them more... sad world I believe people still think their tax money is paying the tax credit for rich people's EVs. They don't know the tax credit is the owner's own tax money coming back to them. If they only owe $5000 on their taxes that year they only get $5000, not the full $7500. So they lash out and vandalize EVs and charging stations to feel better about paying for other people's cars. Which we know is incorrect so they have no reason. Josh Pritt Space Coast EV Drivers Florida AJ TARQUINO I believe that the people that vandalize (Key) EV’s and park their trucks in charging spots is strictly out of their jealousy of the fact we pay less in operating cost and maintenance, which, if they could afford one, they would buy one. Why else you do what they do ?? I, for one am glad that someday the air we breathe will be cleaner and we will be less dependent on foreign gasoline. Gasoline fluctuates every week where I live up and down @ $.60, which I feel is crazy. I play their game and buy when it’s down and wait as long as possible till it comes back down. I also shop around for the best price. I also own a Nissan Leaf that helps, too !! BRIAN C While there are possibly many reasons, I believe most of them are absolute die-hard ICE vehicle drivers. They would rather DIE than to buy, own or drive an EV. Most are surely climate deniers. They feel threatened. Some can see the growing market for EVs and they feel a threat that their freedom to choose to drive an ICE vehicle is going to be taken away from them. BILL POLLOCK CHARGECAR.CA Do people hate EVs? I'm not fully convinced of that. Are they afraid of change...of new things...of things they don't completely understand...of things that will change the way they move through life? I'll bet there is a big Venn diagram overlap between the people who ICE chargers, or resent Electrics, and Brexit supporters and MAGA heads. I know it is a big assumption on my part, but I am willing to stand by it. I think we all agree that they are mostly small c conservatives (small p conservatives?). I can't imaging a liberal going out of their way to be overtly resentful of any choice of car. While Nanoscale Structure Silicon Powders improve Li-ion battery performance, high performance Silicon anodes are not presently commercially feasible due to high manufacturing costs. Specifically, two major issues have been identified as major impediments to commercial feasibility; 1. The cost of the high purity Silicon feed material needed 2. The cost of transforming Silicon into Nanoscale Structure Silicon Powders for Li-ion batteries HPQ Silicon and Pyrogenesis might have the solution... Combining the HPQ PUREVAP™ Quartz Reduction Reactor technology with PyroGenesis Plasma Atomization knowhow to manufacture Nanoscale Structure Silicon powders, could potentially resolve these 2 issues and lead the way to full commercialization of Nanoscale Structure Silicon Powders. If successful, that should subsequently lead to their wide scale adoption in the battery space. If this occurs it would go without saying, HPQ and PyroGenesis would be well positioned to assume a market leading role. Grab your favourite beverage and watch this interview with HPQ CEO Bernard Tourillon.
Recurring guest and friend of the show Ansie joins Matt and Sybe for a discussion about this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry. They also talk about different instant messaging apps and their attitude towards security on the internet.
Company announced that HPQ and its partner Apollon Solar SAS, acting as one party, have signed a non-disclosure agreement (“NDA”) with a manufacturer of Li-ion batteries for the purposes of exchanging technical information and sending testing materials. For industry competitive reasons, the name of the battery manufacturer will remain confidential.

Szponzorációs oldalunk elérhetősége: Patreon.com/KanadaBanda A podcast-ot a heti színessel folytattuk. Kérjük, írd alá a petíciót te is! Köszi! A Deepwater Horizon katasztrófája a Wikipedia oldalán. – Ádi, 3,5 éves A Hidrogénhajtásról. USA-ban: 39 db töltő állomás van (ebből 21 db LA-ben) kb. 150.000 db hagyományos benzinkút kb. 25.000 db villanytöltő állomás Kanada: 3 db töltő állomás EURÓPA: “Európában közel 100 nyilvános hidrogén töltőállomás van, a szakértők 2020-ra azonban már 520-al számolnak, Magyarországon is ekkorra van előirányozva az első hidrogén kút megnyitása, 2030-ra pedig már 14-et irányoz elő idehaza a szakpolitika. Addigra Európában már többezer kút várható: egyedül Nagy-Britanniában mintegy 1.150 hidrogén kút megnyitását tervezik 2030-ra.” 1838. esztendő: Sir William Robert Grove, az első üzemanyagcella megalkotója. Hidrogént tankolni (még) drága. Elektrolízis, “steam methane reforming”- metán gáz átalakítás tárolás: 70-80 atm nyomáson Mennyire hatékonyak az egyes enerigia-hordozók? Szmogos sztori a Fort Mac-i olajtelepek pickup-jairól. “Toyota is going big on fuel cells.” “By 2030, Hyundai Motor Group aims to make 700,000 fuel-cell systems annually, of which 500,000 would be units for personal-use and commercial fuel-cell electric vehicles. That leaves 200,000 units for drones, vessels, and forklifts and other uses outside transportation such as power generation and energy storage systems.” Valamint: “Hyundai Motor Group and its suppliers plan to invest $6.8 billion to expand R&D operations and facilities, with an estimated 51,000 new jobs created.” Ez kb. 1.906 milliárd Forint (kiírva: 1.906.000.000.000 Ft) Hyundai’s comment: “Fuel-cell cars today provide 300 miles of range or more, with refueling in as little as 3 minutes. That range number too is expected to rise over time–with no concern over degradation of the fuel-cell stack itself. We can all speculate about future potential product innovations, like advanced battery technologies, but at this point they are just that: speculation.” Hyundai Nexo Fuel Cell – 1448 km hosszúságú teszt vezetés Kaliforniában, San Diego-ból Sacramento-ba. A 2019-ben kereskedelmi forgalomban elérhető tüzelőanyag-cellás autók: Hyundai Nexo Honda Clarity Toyota Mirai Hydrogen Council – “8 multinational corporations, including BMW, Daimler, Audi, Toyota, Honda and Hyundai”. Kapcsolódó hír 1 és hír 2. Az Alstom üzemanyagcellás vonata Alsó-Szászországban (Németország): És most vissza a tisztán elektromos hajtású autókra. Kanada Kormányzata támogatást kíván nyújtani új, teljesen elektromos autó vásárlásához. Magyarország: “Zöld alapszínű rendszámra a zéró emissziós, a tisztán elektromos hajtású, illetve a belsőégésű motorral is rendelkező, de tisztán elektromos üzemben 25, vagy 50 km megtételére képes autók jogosultak. (5Z, 5P és 5N környezetvédelmi osztályok)” Magyarországi új elektromos autók száma:2015.: 332 db – forrás: “Az alternatív üzemanyagok infrastruktúrájának kiépítéséről szóló irányelv által meghatározott nemzeti szakpolitikai keret című program”2019. Január: átlépte a 10.000 db-t a zöld rendszámot viselő autók száma Magyarországon. A hónap végén a rendszerben lévő 10.036 autóból 4.449 db volt tisztán elektromos, 5.586 db pedig hatótáv növelt (range extender) elektromos, vagy plugin hibrid (PHEV). Elektromos gépjármű vásárlás támogatási pályázat. Aki Hallgatóink közül élt ezzel a lehetőséggel akár most, akár korábban, kérjük, mesélje el, milyen a tapasztalatokkal gazdagodott! Köszönjük a figyelmet! – Lator és Lázadó
Gerard and Laurent explore the Future of Energy Storage, and in particular the relentless growth of Li-Ion batteries. Will alternative technologies such a Molten Salt, Flow Batteries or Pumped Hydro stand a chance? Or will the Li-Ion technology become totally dominant?

Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 11th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. An update on a story I mentioned briefly yesterday...with many news outlets confirming the news such as Bloomberg saying "Nissan Motor Co. said it will investigate instances of misconduct involving falsified data about exhaust emissions and fuel economy, the second controversy in less than a year for the automaker whose vehicle-inspection scandal had led to the recall of about 1.2 million vehicles. The data falsification...occurred on 19 models across five plants in Japan. During the checks, Nissan found out that employees misrepresented temperature and humidity data in the testing chamber and manipulated emission data on carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The automaker has hired a law firm to investigate the matter further." TESLA TO BUILD GIGAFACTORY IN SHANGHAI We knew it was coming, just a matter of when not if, and it has just been confirmed Tesla will build a factory in Shanghai, the city government announced. WSJ said: "The electric-car maker will set up a plant with an annual capacity of 500,000 vehicles, the Shanghai authorities said in a statement. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk was in Shanghai to sign a memorandum of cooperation with Mayor Ying Yong". But why build a factory there? Once Tesla Shanghai has the new Gigafactory at capacity, they'll be building half a million cars for the Chinese market without paying the new import duties. Plus they could move the cheaper cars, like base Model 3 and base Model Y to be built there with lower costs, to increase margins. We know that Freemont is full and Elon has said in the past the Model Y won't be built there. Tesla said in a statement to Bloomberg: "We expect construction to begin in the near future after we get all the necessary approvals and permits. From there, it will take roughly two years until we start producing vehicles and then another two to three years before the factory is fully ramped up to produce around 500,000 vehicles per year for Chinese customers. Tesla is deeply committed to the Chinese market, and we look forward to building even more cars for our customers here. Today’s announcement will not impact our U.S. manufacturing operations, which continue to grow.” "Tesla’s lone car-assembly plant is in Fremont, California, where it’s built about 88,000 cars through the first half of this year, and it has a giant battery factory in neighbouring Nevada. After moving ahead in China, the world’s largest market for electric vehicles, Tesla has said it will reveal plans toward the end of 2018 to build a plant in Europe." Although this isn't a financial podcast and I never pretend to understand the finer subtleties of a balance sheet, TEsla has $2.7bn in cash at the end of Q2 2018, with a plan for the Model 3 to make them profitable between now and the end of the calendar year. China has been an investor in Tesla before, with Tencent Holdings Ltd. spending $1.8 billion to buy a 5 percent stake in March 2017. MERCEDES ECITARO IS AN FULLY ELECTRIC CITY BUS At a major launch event yesterday, Mercedes revealed their all electric eCitaro bus. They said the powertrain has electric motors at the wheel hubs. Lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of up to about 243 kWh provide the power. The range is 150km. They are modular in design: the batteries are split between up to ten modules, each supplying around 25 kWh. As well as two battery modules on the vehicle roof, the standard equipment includes four modules in the rear of the bus. In the eCitaro, these are taking the place of today's powertrain combination of combustion engine and transmission. Depending upon customer requirements, another two or four battery modules are mounted on the roof of the eCitaro. They're using prismatic cells. Mercedes-Benz cools the batteries to ensure that they remain at the ideal temperature, thereby ensuring maximum charging capacity, performance capability, and service life. This cooling is undertaken by a separate battery cooler mounted on the roof. At extreme outside temperatures, the standard passenger-compartment climate control system is used to boost the cooling of the batteries. They see an upgrade path too as battery technology increase: "transport operators will even be able to increase the range of the existing eCitaro buses by swapping out the batteries at a later time and thereby further increase the operational flexibility." They are also talking about solid state batteries, which they predict will offer a 30% increase from 243kWh to 400kWh from 2020. However due to design these won't be swappable with the Li-Ion batteries but sold as a different range. VOLKSWAGEN EXPANDS "ROADMAP E" — AN E-MOBILITY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE IN CHINA On Monday 9th July Volkswagen Group China signed a "Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)" with JAC and SEAT in Berlin, to establish a new "Research & Development" center with a focus on developing electric vehicles, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies, as well as a competitive platform for battery electric vehicles (BEV). SEAT brand will be introduced to China by 2020/2021. This new Memorandum of Understanding will play a key role in Volkswagen Group’s e-mobility plans for China, in order to meet the demands of Chinese customers. Together with JAC and SEAT, Volkswagen Group China will establish an R&D center to develop electric vehicles, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies specifically tailored to the Chinese market, including relevant parts and components and core technologies, with completion planned for 2021. CHINA'S CATL TO BUILD ITS FIRST EUROPEAN EV BATTERY FACTORY IN GERMANY "Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) will build its first production site in Europe in Germany, agreeing a major contract with BMW to supply lithium-ion batteries." according to a report from Reuters, which adds to more of what we've previously reported on this story:" A contract to build the new plant was signed on Monday during a visit to Germany by China's Premier Li Keqiang. Around 240 million euros (S$379 million) will be invested in the first phase of the project, Wolfgang Tiefensee, Thuringia's minister of economic affairs, told journalists. BMW plans to source 4 billion euros of battery cells from CATL over the next few years, with 1.5 billion euros coming from the new site in Erfurt in eastern Germany, the carmaker's purchasing head, Markus Duesmann, said. CATL, the world's largest maker of battery cells for electric vehicles, said the new factory was just its first step in Europe." says BusinessTimes.com.sg: "The CATL factory will create about 600 jobs and reach production of 14 gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2022. CATL reached shipments of 12 GWh in 2017." Deussmann also added: "BMW had invested in some of the costs for the CATL factory in Erfurt, but declined to say how much. Duesmann said BMW was investing in cell research but a decision on whether to produce battery cells itself had not been made. "I don't rule it out," he said. BMW is "very comfortable" with two suppliers of battery cells at the moment, but could add a third and is in talks with eight manufacturers, he added". NOW ANYONE CAN CONFIGURE A MODEL 3 LA Times reports: "Anyone can access the Tesla’s Model 3 “online configurator” and lay down a non-refundable $3,500 cash payment; the delivery date is determined after the money’s been transferred to Tesla." I tried it here from the UK, but with my US VPN connected, and the TEsla.com site hadn't updated. "The stated wait time a Model 3 runs from immediate delivery to as many as nine months for the company’s long-promised $35,000 base price version. But each customer is informed individually about his or her specific delivery date." Tesla replied to a request for comment with this: "“Tesla has always required this deposit for all of its vehicle orders, including Model S and Model X, given that we build cars to our customers’ specifications. That deposit goes towards the purchase price of the vehicle.” We heard at the start of July, when Tesla confirmed they had made 5,000 MOdel 3's per week, that the official number of outstanding orders was 420,000. Tim Pollard, writing for the always-excellent CAR Magazine here in the UK reports that: "Skoda is working on a range of performance electric vehicles loosely dubbed e-RS to indicate the EV equivalent of the Czech company’s vRS go-faster brand. Global sales and marketing chief Alain Favey told CAR magazine that Skoda is planning performance spin-offs of its future EVs, which are in development and ready to launch from next year. First up is the e-Citigo, basically a Czech-branded Volkswagen e-Up testbed, due for launch in late 2019; but this is just the warm-up act for the main event - the new bespoke EV crossover due a year later in autumn 2020, which will be the first to get Skoda’s proposed new e-RS derivative." Favey said to CAR: "There will be an e-RS,the logic is the same as for vRS. It’s not about performance as such… it’s more about the look, the sporty seats, the experience. That’s the spirit of vRS.’ "Expect a 300-mile range, design consistent with regular Skodas, a fast-charging network at main dealers, new, floating instrumentation and the very latest in connectivity, according to Favey." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/industry-news/skoda/skoda-e-rs-electric-vrs-performance-cars-from-2020/ VW EYES GOODWOOD RECORD WITH ITS I.D. R PIKES PEAK ELECTRIC RACER "Hardly content with shattering the all-time record at Pikes Peak, Volkswagen wants its I.D. R Pikes Peak electric race car to be the one to beat on other tracks. It's taking the racer to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the south of England this week, with designs on setting not only the electric car record at the Goodwood Hillclimb, but perhaps the overall benchmark too." according to Engadget: "The Goodwood festival marks the competitive debut of VW's car in Europe, while it will also host the European debut of Tesla's Model 3." https://www.engadget.com/2018/07/09/vw-pikes-peak-electric-race-car-goodwood-hillclimb/ MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV REMAINS UK’S NUMBER ONE PLUG-IN VEHICLE "The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV continues to be the UK’s best-selling plug-in electrified vehicle. Sales of Mitsubishi Motors’ petrol/electric plug-in hybrid SUV totalled 537 units in June and 3,732 units so far this calendar year, ahead of every other pure EV and plug-in hybrid on the market" as reported yesterday by Automotive world. BYD Example (Reverse Engineering Toyota) The Chinese firm, whose name stands for “Build Your Dreams,” was founded as a battery and electronics manufacturer in 1995 and in 2002 they decided to expand into the automotive sector. They are regarded as one of the biggest manufacturers in China. It has even attracted investments from Warren Buffett (who in 2008 bought a 10% stake in the firm and upped it in August 2009). So, what does BYD do and how they have been able to grow this fast? Reverse engineering...BYD's cars are mostly virtually-identical copies of Toyota models, but sold at half the price. BYD has become quite a success story, becoming the world’s largest supplier of Ni-Cd batteries and the second-largest supplier of Li-Ion batteries, and they is applying its reverse engineering experience to an ever-widening array of products. Here they reduced their cost on R&D and also testing and trying. Rather they focused on what is already innovated and proven then reverse engineered it produce at mass scale beating all the competitors who are building the original version. Show notes
We're back for Episode 1 of Season 4 of the Rocketry Show! This is a show packed with lots of information for you! Daniel, The Rocket n00b starts with a discussion on a technique he mastered for making curled balsa and Basswood rocket fins straight again! CG chimes in during the second half to give a basic beginner's primer on Lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries for powering your electronic systems on board your next rocket project! References for you to follow up on what CG was talking about: Since the show was running a bit long, and there were details CG didn't get to cover, he has provided some quick, but important notes here: What does the Battery “C Rating” mean? The C rating of a Lithium Polymer (LiPo) battery (or cell) is used as a guide to show what kind of continuous current draw, in amps, the cell in question will support. By multiplying the C rating times the cell capacity in milliamperehours (mAh), the continuous current in milliamperes (mA) of a cell can be calculated. In my case, the batteries I use for Nesaru are rated as 180 mAh, 25-40C. I'll use the lower “C” number, as I'm pretty sure the 40C is “peak” capacity – more on that in a moment. The Turnigy LiPo battery CG uses for his rocket, Nesaru. For this battery, the safe continuous current draw value is found by multiplying 180 (mAh) x 25 (C), which gives you 4500 mA, or 4.5 Amps. Now, for the "Peak value". This is the amount of current the battery can safely deliver for very short periods of time. In this case, the battery says its peak value is 40C. Using the same math above, we get a peak current rating of 7200 Ma, or 7.2 Amps. Note on Charger setting: The battery in my example is rated for 8C max charge rate. Doing the math (180 x 8), the safe charge rate for my battery is about 1.44 Amps. As for the charger settings for this battery, I should stay below the 1.44 Amp charge value to stay safe. Not pushing the battery to its limits in the charger means the cells will stand a much lesser chance of becoming unbalanced (in multi-cell batteries). So, I typically charge this battery at a 0.5 Amps on the charger. Why? Because unbalanced battery cells = a really bad day in the field – if you're lucky! Links I found for further reading on the topic, and packed with many of the tips I gave, plus much more: The Lithium Polymer Safety Guide The Drone Girl blog That swollen cell phone LiPo battery CG talked about during the show! liPo cell phone battery gone bad! The swelling is apparent, and even though the battery has a big "Li-Ion" stamp on the lower right corner, the fine print on top says what CG figured out when the swelling pushed his old cell phone apart...
*** NOTE from CG: Do not use the LiPo salt water disposal method mentioned in the episode! While it has been "common knowledge" within hobby circles to use this method of disposal, I have found very good reasons not to do this, and I'll talk about it in Episode 54!!!  Just take bad LiPo batteries to a recycling center*** We're back for Episode 1 of Season 4 of the Rocketry Show!
