If you haven't already, please take a moment to hit the subscribe button on your preferred podcast platform. You can also find video versions of this podcast on YouTube and all my links on Instagram and TikTok at @embellishpod. For more details, visit my website at www.embellishpod.com. Jordan is a co-founder and blender at Rolling Fork Spirits, a company known for its diverse range of high-quality spirits. The company started with Rolling Fork Rum and has since expanded to include Wayward Cask, which features Calvados and Armagnacs from France, and Bourbon Deluxe, a Prohibition-era label they recently revived. The Origins of Rolling Fork Spirits Rolling Fork Spirits: Jordan explained that Rolling Fork Spirits is the parent company, with Rolling Fork Rum being their most well-known product. Expansion: The company has expanded to include Wayward Cask and Bourbon Deluxe, each offering unique and high-quality spirits. Historical Ties: Jordan's business partner, Turner, comes from the Wathen family, a name deeply rooted in the history of Kentucky bourbon. Bourbon Deluxe Revival Historical Significance: Bourbon Deluxe was a Prohibition-era label that Jordan and Turner revived after Jim Beam abandoned the trademark. Marketing and Branding: They aimed to maintain the vintage feel of the original label, including quirky taglines like "Glorious Sunshine of a Thousand Ages" and "The Zenith of Possibility in Whiskey Quality." The Journey into Rum and Other Spirits Initial Focus on Rum: Jordan discussed why they chose to start with rum, a spirit often underappreciated in the U.S. market but highly valued in Europe. Armagnac and Calvados: They later ventured into these spirits, which are beloved by industry insiders but not widely known among the general public. Blending and Bottling Blending Process: Jordan shared insights into their meticulous blending process, which involves selecting barrels based on specific criteria and balancing flavors to achieve the desired profile. Challenges and Strategies: He also talked about the challenges of blending, such as dealing with "bad barrels" and how to incorporate them into a blend without compromising quality. Market Dynamics and Pricing Value Proposition: Rolling Fork Spirits aims to offer high-quality spirits at reasonable prices. For example, their 25-year-old Calvados is priced at $149, a rarity in the market. Market Trends: Jordan touched on market trends, including the impact of COVID-19 on the spirits industry and the rising popularity of agave spirits. Personal Anecdotes and Stories Historical Anecdotes: Jordan shared a captivating story about an 1898 vintage Armagnac that was hidden in the walls of a house during the Nazi invasion, illustrating the rich history and craftsmanship behind these spirits. Industry Insights: He also provided insights into the independent bottling scene, comparing it to the more familiar concept of non-distilling producers in the U.S. This episode offers a deep dive into the world of spirits, from the historical roots of Rolling Fork Spirits to the complexities of blending and bottling. Whether you're a spirits enthusiast or just curious about the industry, this conversation with Jordan provides valuable insights and fascinating stories. This week Beau discusses the very beginning of Henry V's reign, with particular focus on foreign affairs, the slow-burn civil war in France between the Armagnacs and the Burgundians, as well as the turmoil within the Catholics Church and the Council of Constance.
“Once more unto the breach, dear friends. Once more, we'll close the wall up with our English dead […] And upon this charge, cry God for Harry, England and St. George!” Such was Henry V's call to arms at the siege of Harfleur, as written by Shakespeare. The son of the Usurper King, Henry V has decided to take up the English claim to the French throne, thereby putting an end to the truce that had marked a pause in the Hundred Years' War. And so, in the late summer of 1415, Henry has decided to lay siege to the massive port of Harfleur, in Normandy, a renowned nest of state-sponsored pirates. The English king has waited a long time for this moment, and the odds may never again be so favourable to him: a civil war looms in France, as the formidable Burgundians, led by John the Fearless, jostle for power with their sworn enemies, the Armagnacs. The powerless French king, Charles VI, and his son, the Dauphin, can do nothing but watch the infighting unfold… Join Tom and Dominic in the first part of their return to the story of the Hundred Year's War, as Henry V takes up a decades-old claim to the French throne… _______ *The Rest Is History LIVE in the U.S.A.* If you live in the States, we've got some great news: Tom and Dominic will be performing throughout America in November, with shows in New York, San Francisco, L.A., Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Boston. *The Rest Is History LIVE at the Royal Albert Hall* Tom and Dominic, accompanied by a live orchestra, take a deep dive into the lives and times of two of history's greatest composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. Herlinda Heras, Bryan Rengel and Jeffery House. Jeffery House, founder of Ace Cider is here, so is Bryan Rengel from Old Caz Beer, on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras. Bryan's last time on Brew Ha Ha was this episode back in January 2024. Jeffery's last BHH appearance was this episode in August of 2022. Jeffery House, founder of Ace Cider, has a new book. The Cider King is a story of how he came from England and ended up on the west coast. He got handcuffed for not having a green card but the judge gave him voluntary departure instead of deportation. A friend of his was importing cognacs and Armagnacs and various spirits, so he started working with him. He noticed an opportunity to import British and Belgian beer. Then, on his friend's suggestion became the first to import Sonoma wine to the UK, beginning in 1981. Bryan Rengel tells the story of how he built Old Caz with his partners, using materials that were entirely DIY, found and acquired for free. Now they are building the new location bringing in the same materials. He and his partner love cycling in the mountains and named the brewery after a very challenging road that they love to ride, which is Old Cazadero Road. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Old Caz new location Opens June 1 They are definitely opening on June 1, having passed the health department inspection last Tuesday and the City of Rhonert Park gave their official approval today. There is some work to do still. Noon on June 1, they will have a grand opening ribbon cutting. The Old Caz Cavalcade will be a 3.5 mile march from the old location to the new one. Join the cool kids for that. The Cider King is the name of Jeffery House's new book. It's on Amazon and Kindle as of a couple of weeks ago. The Kindle version for 90 days is free. He will do an audio book version of it in his own voice. He started Ace Cider with seed money from a settlement from the end of a distribution agreement he had in England. Visit Homerun Pizza, home of the Knuckleball! Fresh pizza dough made from scratch daily, la pizza è deliziosa! Somebody told me they were growing apples in west (Sonoma) county. I drove up here one day to Sebastopol. It was like England with sunshine. The cows were happy, the fields were green…” In 1993 they made their first cider. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Bryan modestly announces that Old Caz Beer won Gold for Chismoso Mexican Lager at the World Cup of Beer. They had forgotten even sending in the beer. He also just found out about another gold from Rolling Stone Magazine.
L'Empire n'a jamais pris fin."

Dawn delights in delivering not only the amazing story of this 15th C. heroine, but some of the top-shelf drama that precipitated her appearance in our history books.---00:03:52 - After some initial jib-jab and mutual adoration, Lauren tells the story of how she got the job on MADtv. An incredible rats-to-(comparative) riches story. 00:10:28 - Dawn discusses her lack of prior knowledge about Joan and - as usual - sharing her primary source of research: Joan of Arc, A History by Helen Castor. Among the reasons Dawn chose this book is because it gives a great foundation for the lay of the land before Joan's incredible appearance. 00:13:37 - The HILF of Joan of Arc officially begins in the 92nd year of the 100-Year War, and everyone is fucking exhausted. The fight between the French and the English is further complicated by a Civil War within France between the Burgundies and the Armagnacs. Fractured and on their heels, it appears to many that the English may finally prove victorious and sieze the French throne. 00:23:28 - It is from this depth of despair that the would-be king of France gets news that a girl is there to see him. A girl dressed as a boy who says she is there to do three things at God's command: 1) She is to personally lead his Army, 2) She will get him coronated as the rightful King, 3) She will expel the English from all French lands. Individually, these are preposterous ideas - taken together they are virtually impossible without a miracle... Which Joan assures will materialize. 00:34:50 - After incredibly accomplishing the first two items on her list, Joan begins to suffer defeats and set-backs and loses the confidence of the King. She is soon captured by the Burgundies who instead of turning her over to the Armagnacs as a military prisoner, they hand her over to the English to be tried for heresy. After two escape attempts, her trial begins in 1431 when she is 19. --BREAK--00:38:52 - We pick up with Joan at the beginning of her trial for heresy. The English can not abide the idea that the God they share with France would have told anyone they would lose... Her conviction was a foregone conclusion, but more than that the court wanted Joan to break. Apologize and capitulate and admit she was mad, wrong or full of sin. 00:42:55 - Joan is alone, a teenager, and the only woman present from the guards, to judges to witnesses. She's illiterate and facing some of the most 'learned men' of the age. The trial is led by Bishop Cauchon (not pronounced 'cock-on', unfortunately) a Frenchmen, but a Burgundy Frenchman who has it in for Joan and assembles a stupendous amount of bureaucracy and committees and tedium in order to burn her. She holds her own. Big time.00:50:00 - Joan withstands the trial, refuses to be intimidated by the promise of torture, and ultimately is tied to a stake at the center of town and given ONE MORE CHANCE to sign a confession and save her life... WHICH SHE DOES. In turn, they cut her down and take her back to jail to live another day. Dawn stops on this point because it came as such a surprise. It doesn't last long, however. Joan misunderstood what was expected of her in exchange for whatever it was she signed (she couldn't read it) and so she returns to the stake 7 days later.00:54:25 - Joan asks for someone to hold a cross in front of her as the pyre is lit. They do and she watches it as she burns to death. Her ashes are unceremoniously thrown into the Seine. 01:00:16 - Eventually the Burgundies and the Armagnacs make peace and again stand unified against the English. King Charles, now realizing that Joan would forever be tied to his name, appeals to the Pope to reverse her heresy conviction. A second trial begins. This one too has a foregone conclusion, but tells us more about Joan as human being - with family, friends and an identity that predates the shining armor. 01:04:00 - In 1920, she becomes - not just a person who has been acquitted of heresy - but she is canonized as a Saint. It is highly unusual for someone to be canonized by the same Church who martyred them. History, am I right?Dawn concludes with a movie suggestion: The Messenger, starring Milla Jovovich as Joan of Arc. ---THANK YOU so much for listening. This is one for the record books – I taste through four high-end brandies from Bhakta Spirits with none other than Raj Bhakta himself. This is a different type of episode right from the start. Bhakta Spirits' story comes out through the conversation, but it's really about the spirits themselves. From a decades-old Armagnac and Calvados blend to a pair of century-and-a-half-old brandies, a single word emerges: quality. To put it bluntly, this shit is the real deal. Bhakta Brandy Bhakta Spirits Bhakta Farms Here's the fun part: that decades-old Armagnac and Calvados blend? 80 bucks. 80 BUCKS. Can you imagine a 40-ish year old whiskey being less than 80 bucks per ounce, let alone for the full bottle? Come on now. The brandies? Really, Armagnacs, but for ease of labeling they're listed as brandies. Each batch is a single barrel with various vintages in it ranging from 1970 – already fifty-plus years old – to 1868. The first vintages in these bottles were distilled when Andrew Johnson was president and Ulysses S. Grant was elected. A few other things from that year: The Meiji Restoration begins in Japan, opening the country after centuries of insular policy. The first parade with floats occurs at Mardi Gras in New Orleans The first cro-magnon skeletons are identified The first Memorial Day is observed in the US The 14th Amendment is ratified Wyoming becomes a US territory Edison files his first patent Ok you get the point. ITS OLD. And it's fucking fantastic. Raj? He was a blast to taste through these with. You can tell how he relaxes through the episode and by the end we're swapping tasting notes and ideas for finished American whiskies. I look forward to having him back on the pod in the future. In 1413, Henry V succeeded to the throne of England. An able statesman and experienced warrior, he was determined to restore the English lands in France and press the Plantagenet claim to the French throne. Meanwhile, France had plunged into a devastating civil war between two noble factions, the Armagnacs and the Burgundians. Taking advantage of this crisis, Henry landed in Normandy with a powerful army in August 1415.
Raj Peter Bhakta, the founder of WhistlePig and now Bhakta Farms, has left the world of rye whiskey and entered into the world of rare Armagnac brandy. Raj just introduced BHAKTA 50, a marriage of Argmanac’s he discovered with Vintages from 1868 - 1970. And he’s gone a step further and finished it in Islay casks. A complex spirit that is ideal for the curious whiskey lover. Sweet and smoky but not overly so, this finishing process for 50+ year old Armagnac is unlike anything else. Raj had us all on our toes for this episode and we were excited to explore something so rare and unique. And don’t miss the teaser for Raj’s next big project; his whiskey project, called Empire, a “global whiskey” coming out next year (2021). His success in rye established the category during a time when the industry overlooked it. Now, with BHAKTA, he is reviving another spirit: ancient Armagnac brandy, bottled stateside in Vermont. Bhakta is a first generation American. Both of his parents are immigrants. Born in 1975 to a Gujarati father and an Irish mother, he grew up in the Philadelphia area and attended the Hill School in Pottstown, PA before graduating Boston College in 1998. After beginning his career with investment banking firm Violy & Co, Bhakta departed to found Automovia, a valuation tech startup for pre-owned vehicles. He also worked for a time in the family business, leading a condominium development project in Vail, CO. While in Colorado in 2004, Bhakta scored a role on Trump’s nascent reality show The Apprentice, Season 2. His business prowess and theatrical antics helped him navigate, barter, and flirt to the ninth week before being fired by Trump. His charisma with women became fodder for gossip columns like New York Post’s Page Six, and his frequent wearing of bow ties was credited with a surge in the accessory’s popularity. In 2006, Bhakta ran for U.S. Congress from Pennsylvania’s 13th district. His campaign gained national notoriety due to his television background and playboy reputation. In October, Bhakta protested US-Mexican border weakness by riding an elephant along the Rio Grande with a 6-man mariachi band. This garnered even more publicity, and by the end of his unsuccessful campaign, Bhakta appeared on MSNBC, CNN’s Crossfire, and Fox News. After his defeat in 2007, Bhakta moved from Manhattan to seek green fields. He purchased a decrepit Vermont dairy farm and began searching for obscure spirits to market under his new brand WhistlePig. Acquiring stocks from Canadian distiller Alberta Premium, Bhakta partnered with master distiller Dave Pickerel and began bottling his 10-year rye in 2010. Praised nationwide, WhistlePig put rye back on the map and grew to America’s premier luxury whiskey in just a few years. After selling in 2019, Bhakta began a crusade for the world’s finest spirits. On this journey, Bhakta stumbled on a stock of rare and exquisite Armagnacs in a Gers chateau. Distilled 1868-1970, the portfolio contains enough to bottle blends well over 50 years old. The vintages also predate Armagnac history’s largest crisis, the Great French Wine Blight, which devastated vineyards and changed grape varietals forever. The oldest brandies use only original cultivars, making them perhaps the only genuine Armagnacs left in existence. Bhakta, immediately enamored, negotiated a hefty purchase and brought them back home to Vermont. With these assets, Bhakta is set to outdo his former ventures. BHAKTA 50 Year Brandy is older than any whiskey available and steeped in generations of small-scale craft. It also gets a unique Islay cask finish: the perfect marriage of brandy and Scotch. Bhakta has even put his own name on the bottle, showing just how proud he is of this magnum opus. BHAKTA offers a singular experience: brandy for the whiskey-lover. Just like he returned rye to the national spotlight, he’s now found a niche new spirit with its own distinct category. Bhakta Brandy has just launched this 4th of July. Barrel 1 contains vintages 50-152 years old, with more released one-by-one this year. With only 38 total barrels, the $250 price tag seems impossible. As more barrels launch, demand will swiftly outpace his vanishing supply to create a fast-appreciating asset. Recall Bhakta’s BossHog Line and WhistlePig 111, which began at $111 and now sells for upwards of $2,300. For followers of these previous ventures, the upward potential in Bhakta’s liquid investment is easily tenable. The rest will have to taste and find out themselves if his unique brandy is worth the acclaim. photo credit: Bhakta Farms / Bhakta Spirits

Welcome to Bevcast, beverage trade network's podcast channel where you can get tips from alcohol beverage industry experts and learn more about beer, wine, and spirits. In this episode, we talk about Armagnac, part of Spirits Styles series by Bevcast. Armagnac is generally considered to be one of France’s great brandies, with its fame and popularity only eclipsed by Cognac. This specific type of brandy is produced in the Armagnac region in southwestern France, approximately 100 miles southeast of Bordeaux. There are three different appellations for Armagnac: Bas-Armagnac (the top Armagnac producing region), Ténareze, and Haut-Armagnac (which produces the lightest Armagnacs). ***Subscribe to our Channels for more: *** ► YouTube: www.youtube.com/user/BEVERAGETRADENETWORK ► iTunes: itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/bevcast/ ► Stitcher: www.stitcher.com/s?fid=233919&refid=stpr

Every once in a while, you might want to step outside of your comfort zone and try something besides whisky. A WhiskyCast listener asked for suggestions along those lines after hearing our October episode about Armagnacs, and we turned to Jeff Cioletti for answers. He's the author of the new book "The Year of Drinking Adventurously: 52 Ways To Get Out of Your Comfort Zone" and editor-at-large for Beverage World magazine, and he'll join us for this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Diageo has bought a stake in Denmark's Stauning Distillery, while The Macallan and Glenfiddich are both planning new expansions. Glenfiddich's plans have a local politician concerned about "whisky nutters" crowding the roadside to take pictures. We'll also have details on some of the week's new whiskies, say farewell to one of Speyside's leaders, and taste three whiskies from around the world.
It's rare that we talk about spirits other than whiskies on WhiskyCast, but with many people complaining that rising prices for single malts are forcing them to seek alternatives, it's a good time to take another look at Armagnacs. We first looked at the French spirit back in 2007, and while whisky prices have been rising sharply, prices for vintage Armagnacs have been rising much more slowly. Florence Castarède is the sixth generation of her family to manage Armagnac Castarède, and we'll discuss Armagnacs with her on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Sazerac plans to revive the Michael Collins Irish Whiskey brand - just in time for the centennial of the Irish revolutionary's rise to prominence during the Irish Civil War. Shakespeare asked "what's in a name" -- and two whisky makers are asking that after winding up with the same name on their whiskies...and Neiman Marcus has the $125,000 answer to the question "what to give a whisky lover who has everything."
For the first time, we'll talk about something other than whiskies on WhiskyCast! There's a new trend toward single-estate Cognacs and Armagnacs from France that compare very favorably with many single malts...and can often be a fraction of the price! Veteran spirits writer F. Paul Pacult led a tasting of rare Cognacs and Armagnacs this past week in New York, and he'll help guide us on a journey through the French countryside. In the news, a $30,000 Balvenie hits the market, new whiskies from Compass Box, and Mallya does motorsports as well as whisky...
