Collective Effervescence - ReDefining a Democracy that Works with Isabella Roberts of ANTIPARTY

Accidental Gods

Can we separate politics from democracy? Our political system is wholly corrupt and no longer fit for purpose - if it ever was. What if Citizens' Assemblies could bring agency to the whole of our population, helping people to find empathy with each other, to engage in conversations in good faith and work together to solve the wicked problems of the polycrisis: social inequity, climate chaos, the death cult of predatory capitalism.  These are so interlinked, we won't fix one unless we fix them all. So how do we do it?  This week, I'm talking to someone who spends her life reflecting on, teaching and researching this. Isabella Roberts started off in the Big Four, Private Equity and Investment Banking, then switched from the private markets into politics at the start of 2021 as a candidate for the London Assembly elections. Against the backdrop of the UK's first year out of the EU and in the depths of the COVID pandemic, she was inspired to take a stand and be the change she wanted to see in the governance of the UK's capital. She then took on a Masters in Digital Politics and Sustainable Development.  Her thesis in 2023 focused on How Collective Intelligence Can Enhance Democracy, which resulted in the initiation of SAAFE which stands for: Space for Silent Contemplation and Reflection, Active Listening and Feeling Heard, Ability to Change One's Mind, Feeling Connected as Part of the Whole, Epistemic Growth and Epistemic Humility - and which uses human-centred design principles for empowering participants in tech-enabled deliberation. This is an inquiry into what it means to be human in a digital age, in line with systems change towards a more deliberative democracy, and it has manifested in a multi-stakeholder project supported by the Web Science Institute at the University of Southampton, bringing together democratic practitioners and the developers of deliberative technologies.  Meanwhile, Bella is the independent evaluator of two deliberative processes: the Birmingham Museums Trust Citizens' Jury, and currently the National Gallery's Citizens' Assembly (NG Citizens).  She also completed her first Vipassana course of 10-day silent meditation and is studying for a PhD with the title: Revolutionising deliberative democracy with immersive technology - a comparison between East and West. Bella has explored the depth and breadth of what works, so that together, we can create a democracy that empowers ordinary people to help fix their communities and the wider world. Like previous podcast guests, Matt Golding of Antidote and Dylan McGarry of Empatheatre, Bella understands the sense of meaning and purpose and involvement that is so transformative - which was why this conversation was so rich and so deep.  Enjoy!LinksBella on LinkedInAntipartyDelibtechBreathe With Bella SubstackBella on YouTube Bella on Spotify@Antiparty on YouTubeANTIPARTY on SpotifyPOLISBooksAgainst ElectionsPolitics without Politicians by Helen Landemore Bella's Masters Dissertation - How Can Collective Intelligence Enhance Democracy? Have you ever wondered why hearing "your song" can instantly change your mood, your heart rate, and even your memories? In this surprise episode of Love & Life Elevated, Dr. Debra catches James off guard to dive deep into a biohack that doesn't cost a dime: The Power of Music. We move beyond background noise to explore how music acts as a master architect for your brain and your relationships. From enhancing executive function and cognition to the profound way it anchors our long-term memory, music is more than just a vibe—it's a biological necessity. In this episode, we discuss: The Science of Sound: How music stimulates the brain's executive centers and improves cognitive clarity. Collective Effervescence: Why singing, dancing, or drumming together creates a unique "synchrony" that lowers cortisol and builds tribal bond. The "Love Song" Anchor: Why every partnership needs a musical anchor to navigate the "Social Hasslers" of life. Music as Medicine: Practical ways to use rhythm to shift your nervous system from "clench" to "flow." Whether it's the beat of a drum or the lyrics of your favorite anthem, music is the ultimate tool for Relational Biology. It's time to stop just listening and start using sound to architect a longer, more connected life. If you want to hear more of their work, Han will be reading at the Virginia Festival of the Book the weekend after this episode drops. Info about festival : https://vahumanities.cventevents.com/event/bookfest/summary?session=397b14b2-a8e5-46e5-97ab-05730c0f5466   Don't be jelly, but we're having a blast with three poems from the poet Han VanderHart in this episode! You can join in on the fizzing of our collective effervescence by just tuning in. We find the conversation naturally turning towards John Berger's Ways of Seeing, taking in the pipe as a fairly recent newcomer as a punctuation mark in poetry, and the concept of absolute zero, alongside much, much more. Poetic themes of truth, love, and the power of “No” sit at the center of our conversation. Oh, and Marion deftly keeps Kathy in the conversation when technology unexpectedly steals her voice! (Be sure to check out the painting Truth Coming Out of Her Well, the inspiration for the first poem, an ekphrastic, that we discuss. It's a painting that has inspired some cool tattoo art!)   At the table: Marion Wrenn, Kathleen Volk Miller, Jason Schneiderman, Divina Boko, Lisa Zerkle, Dagne Forrest, Lillie Volpe (sound engineer)     Han VanderHart grew up on a small-scale farm in Virginia, and now lives in North Carolina, under the pines with their long term partner, two children, four cats, two dogs, and a Diva koi Beta fish named Caroline (long I). Their favorite flower is all of them, with the exception of the gerber daisy, which looks fake. Han is the author of Larks (Ohio, 2025) and What Pecan Light (BCP, 2021), and hosts Of Poetry Podcast and co-edits River River Books with Amorak Huey.   Insta: @han.vanderhart Bluesky: @hanvanderhart.bsky.social Website: hanvanderhart.com

The Tarot Diagnosis
Collective Effervescence & the Three of Cups: The Emotional Power of Shared Experiences

The Tarot Diagnosis

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 11, 2026 22:18

In this episode of The Tarot Diagnosis, I discuss an epiphany I had after pulling the Three of Cups. It led me to reflect on the feeling I have when I'm in the middle of a crowd at a concert. Or, back in the day, when I'd wait in line for hours to be front and center of the stage at the barricade. It was such a euphoric feeling, everyone sharing in excitement and joy at the same moment in time for the same reason. And then it hit me…the three of cups is collective effervescence. I explore the psychology behind collective effervescence and why shared experiences feel so much more intense than solitary ones. Research shows that in group settings, our nervous systems synchronize (so our heart rates align, attention focuses intensely, and emotions amplify). The Three of Cups just so happens to capture this perfectly because it marks the point in the Cups suit where emotion becomes a shared social experience, where our feelings spill out into the collective container and move through a group. I also talk about why this experience isn't necessarily universal because some people feel energized by crowds, while others feel depleted.I then turn toward the shadow side of collective effervescence: like when shared joy can actually become weaponized, when belonging becomes conditional, and when emotional highs replace healthy discernment. For example, social, religious, or spiritual groups that rely solely on emotional intensity can confuse euphoria with safety, truth, or moral superiority making it hard to question what's being expressed or leave the group entirely. In tarot terms, this is the Three of Cups reserved. Finally, I offer a reframe: tarot itself can act as a catalyst for collective effervescence, even when we're alone. Which, I know, may sound contradictory because I talk about how this experience is specific to shared socialization (hence the term “collective”) But when we shuffle the cards, despite engaging in a solitary act, it's not entirely isolated because we are often tapping into the collective unconscious. Tarot embodies shared symbolism, collective meaning, and centuries of human emotional investment. So, in that way, every reading becomes a sort of communal experience, even in the privacy of our own space. Which feels like a lovely reminder that even in solitude, we're participating in something deeply shared by the collective.Research Mentioned:https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17439760.2019.1689412https://sociologicalscience.com/download/vol-6/january/SocSci_v6_27to42.pdfhttps://d1wqtxts1xzle7.cloudfront.net/30621134/Buehler-libre.pdf?1391824300=&response-content-disposition=inline%3B+filename%3DThe_Twenty_first_century_Study_of_Collec.pdf&Expires=1767414020&Signature=QVl3sp8hBIw4IAWZMvUjReIHHUdhLD9atRDQxOESXJNMrhjjFh6K3vspnJD4Y31hwZdP8AvHeeOaGAzR7lyZz0-sl3lj13YUo9Rkjg24~24Khhy9HzGnrYgyt71ByUzRBO2SUYF37JAA6lji9dJ2QYJABEw~IJYDm6r8VX5R4SSEhcF82s1p3OBMFNizKjY6E50qJuqQL3S3vo8Q24YGnrFCcitUn~amfqPtI-CXV7jUi698jCFU71hX-iuJApC1hysJuHZZwdwskW2KE9Mc3r0p7eX0WZdBvCWxBEClQGNsU4KaTjxfdLc6MLqC2sKvl2rK-Fng0UddvqPbdWznvw__&Key-Pair-Id=APKAJLOHF5GGSLRBV4ZAhttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9473704/https://journalofsocialontology.org/index.php/jso/article/view/8732/9552

Episode 137: Collective Effervescence   Don't be jelly, but we're having a blast with three poems from the poet Han VanderHart in this episode!

Have you ever felt that electric energy in a room full of people who are lit up with purpose, passion, or pure joy? That's collective effervescence—when we rise together, fueled by shared meaning and movement. Whether it's a gathering for change, a spiritual circle, or even a spontaneous moment of joy with strangers, it's a sacred reminder: We are wired for connection. We are strengthened by belonging. And when our hearts beat together—we heal, we thrive, and we ignite. Let this be your reminder today: You don't have to go it alone. Find your people. Share your light. And rise in the radiance of togetherness. #TheArtOfEveryDay #Purpose #LiveConnected #RiseUp #BeTheLight #Effervescense

What happens when we take ACTION to find joy, connection and inspiration? From taking a vacation to going to see live theatre to getting emotionally invested in the livelihood of a bald eagle family (May is obsessed!), these are just some of the ways we are finding light in the darkness. But that's not to say May, Kelly and Tamlyn are ignoring the reality of what's happening around us. The key is to find the humanity in our stories, in art, in history, in nature, in life. And when we come together to share these experiences it's called "Collective Effervescence", a concept coined by Sociologist Émile Durkheim, to describe the feeling of intense shared emotional activation and a sense of unison that emerges when people come together and engage in a shared activity or experience. So join MKT in this episode as we share Collective Effervescence together. Show Notes:"Here there are blueberries" tickets (runs until 3/30/25thewallis.org"Cambodian Rock Band" tickets (runs until 3/23/25)eastwestplayers.org Please subscribe, rate and review us!And follow us on IG @shoesoffinsidemkt
