Today's guest is Tina Jacobson, a lifelong artist and spiritual explorer from Australia whose creative journey weaves art, intuition, and healing. Raised on an animal-filled farm by creative parents, Tina has spent her life immersed in design, murals, and illustration. Her coloring books, including The Colorful Life Colouring Book, invite readers to reconnect with creativity as a gentle, spiritual practice rather than a task to complete.Through years of self-discovery, Tina learned that healing begins by watching the mind. Once trapped in cycles of self-criticism and dark thoughts, she discovered that thoughts aren't truth—they're passing waves. Influenced by teachers like Michael Singer and Byron Katie, Tina began observing her thoughts instead of believing them, noticing how they affected her body. She reminds us, if you can bring that fear back to your body and feel at ease, you can't change anything—but when you're in your body, you're closer to your intuition, and it will give you ideas on what to do. Fix yourself, heal the world. Use your body to bring dark thoughts to light. Our conversation explores how coloring, movement, and awareness of the body can return us to presence and Creative Intelligence. Tina reminds us that love doesn't mind when things fall apart—it simply observes. When we witness our thoughts without judgment, they lose their grip, and creativity becomes a path to freedom. For more information, visit www.spiritualartisttoday.com. Episode #101 tells the story of “Australian Artists in Japan”. From the Milesago website, I've discovered that the idea of Australian Artists recording in Japan emerged from a cultural exchange that began in conjunction with the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. As far as I can ascertain, three Australian artists recorded in Japan; Col Joye and The Joy Boys, Noeleen Batley and Little Pattie. I have a picture of Judy Stone in Japan but no record of any recording. Episode #101 is also my penultimate episode. The voice is obviously deteriorating which is almost certainly related to Parkinsons (meaning that it's not going to get any better). Episode #102 will be something entirely different; coming soon! Enjoy episode #101!

Megan Cope is a Quandamooka artist from Moreton Bay/North Stradbroke Island in South East Queensland. Her site-specific sculptural installations, public art practice and paintings investigate issues relating to colonial histories, the environment and mapping practices. In this conversation with Newcastle Art Gallery’s Head of Curatorial and Exhibitions, Miriam Kelly, Megan Cope discusses her living sculptures that draw on ancestral technologies and seek to heal saltwater environments. She also delves into the historical and ecological importance of oysters. This conversation was captured live at the Ngumpi Kinyingarra Oyster House during the New Annual Festival in Newcastle in September 2024. Presented as a temporary pavilion on the Honeysuckle Marina, Ngumpi Kinyingarra Oyster House hosted workshops, performances, talks, and even an oyster shucking competition! Thanks to an enthusiastic group of oyster shuckers from the community, this 'Scrub Club' saw over 4,875 oysters cleaned for use in a future work of art by Megan Cope. In this episode of Biographers in Conversation, the historian Dr Kiera Lindsey chats with Dr Gabriella Kelly-Davies about her choices while crafting Wild Love: The Ambitions of Adelaide Ironside, the First Australian Artist to Astonish the World. Here's what you'll discover in this episode: Adelaide Eliza Scott Ironside was a trailblazing Australian artist known for her passion, ambition and extraordinary talent. Born in Sydney in 1831, she challenged artistic boundaries by exploring themes such as identity, sexuality and spirituality Why Kiera Lindsey challenged the traditional narrative of Australian art history Why Adelaide Ironside's story is still so relevant today How Kiera painstakingly pieced together tiny scraps of evidence from 19th-century historical records in which women were mostly invisible How following in Adelaide's footsteps in colonial Sydney, London, Rome, Florence and Scotland from 200 years ago contributed to the narrative The limits Kiera placed on her imagination when speculating to fill gaps in the fragmentary historical record How Kiera portrayed the cultural norms, societal values and prevailing ideologies in which Adelaide successfully pursued her artistic ambitions How Kiera interpreted Adelaide's romantic mysticism, which appeared in her poetry and paintings The art and craft of speculative biography, as well as its relevance and impacts.

Recently on the show we met Filipino artist Pio Abad to hear about his Turner Prize nominated exhibition 'To Those Sitting in Darkness' which re-presented museum objects to reveal hidden histories and the deep legacies of colonialism. Thai-Australian multidisciplinary artist Nathan Beard takes a different, less didactic, approach but, like Pio Abad, is working with cultural objects that are largely unseen. In Beard's case, Buddha heads made for ritual use, squirrelled away in the British Museum. The exoticisation and familiarity of Thai culture has proved to be fertile ground for Beard's artwork — where he gives free rein to his critical approach and his broad, irreverent sense of humour.

Paul Kelly is one of the leading artists making music in Australia and given his remarkable legacy — consisting of some 29 albums and a career that extends back nearly four decades — he rightfully deserves his place on that pantheon. His new album, Fever Longing Still, marks his first new collection in six years, not counting the various compilations and collections that have helped to reinforce his status as a remarkable singer/songwriter worthy of international repute. Recorded in tandem with longtime collaborators — Peter Luscombe (drums), Bill McDonald (bass), Dan Kelly (guitar), Cameron Bruce (keys), and Ash Naylor (guitar) — it may come across as more of a band effort overall, but it continues to provide the sardonic wit that Kelly is so well known for. His songs are always profoundly engaging, and whether opting for a jaunty reprieve, arched enthusiasm, a mix of tenderness and tenacity to an equal degree. The fact that the album title is lifted from a work by William Shakespeare, one of Kelly's literary idols, testifies to the fact that his reputation for literacy, emotional expression and an everyman sensibility is what makes his music relatable and affecting. Consequently, when Mr. Kelly offers his insights to Lee and Billy courtesy of My Backstage Pass, it's both revelatory and refreshing in every way. Festival Season on Roadcase is finally upon us and we're kicking it off from Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago!! For this Part 1 from Pitchfork, I talked to singer, rapper and multi-genre artist, Tkay Maizda and also had a fun convo with the amazing Riot Girrrrls themselves, Molly Neuman and Allison Wolfe of Bratmobile. Tkay has achieved global recognition already in her brief career, having won NME's Best Australian Solo Artist in 2022. She was also nominated for an ARIA award for Best Rap Song for her 2023 single "Silent Assassin." But accolades alone do not do her justice; Tkay is a joyous human and a tireless artist, and she talked to me about striving to create and perform at the highest levels. We discussed what it was like growing up in Australia, moving frequently from city to city, how she stayed true to herself and her art.Molly and Allison of Bratmobile are back playing live after a 20-year hiatus and are both super excited to be performing again. Having been at the hub of the Riot Girl movement in the early 90s, Bratmobile waved the flag for the DIY spirit and Girl Power. They both talked to me about their fierce advocacy for Women's Rights and for the inclusion of Women in the music industry both in performance and production roles, and talked to me about all the life they've lived since starting up the band over 30 years ago! This is a great episode with these super compelling artists featuring tons of great stories and tales from the road. Had Mick Doellinger on today. Wow. He has got an interesting life. At 18 months old his family experiences an extremely traumatic event when the ship that his parents are taking to emigrate from Germany to Australia sinks in the Indian Ocean. So that's where it starts, folks. It's clear to me when I listen to this man talk that he was always meant to be a sculptor. He had to find his calling by wading through the different trials and components of a life where staying afloat is the main priority. He was a taxidermist. He worked the rodeo. He was a butcher. All of these jobs and experiences contributed to forming an oddly specific skill set and ultimately he found his calling as a wildlife sculptor.Mick is one of the foremost wildlife sculptors out there. He's in many of the top museums and galleries in the country. So he's a very interesting indivudual. I had a great time with Mick Doellinger on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 232.You can see Mick's work in the Masters of the American West show at the Autry Museum of the American West. https://masters.theautry.org/search?q=mick+doellinger

Solidifying her obsession with research into the stained glass window's development through the 20th century, with the manifestations of the Arts and Crafts anti-industrialisation ideals embedded in it's design and construction. Through her work, she celebrates both the legacy of the craft laid out before her and the potentiality of the materials when manipulated with a contemporary perspective and up-to-date technology. Her experience includes custom stained glass fabrication, heritage restoration, architectural glass work and exhibition works. To see more of Nadine's work, her instagram is @nadinekeegan. Priya Gore. Wow, what a joyful person. I had so much fun with this podcast and I hope people that listen to it can hear the joy not only in her voice but in mine as well.If you are an artist and wondering: "how do I go about doing this? should I take that leap? Is it worth it? Can I do it?" Well, let me tell you. Priya did it. From growing up in India with 20+ cousins (essentially brothers and sisters) that are all doctors except for the one telecommunications engineer, progressing through that industry and ending up in Australia, to eventually becoming an extremely talented full-time artist. She just has wonderful abilities with a paintbrush. This is one of those insightful and uplifting podcasts that you rarely come across but when you do, it's such a joy. Priya is definitely a unique and interesting human being and I think everyone who listens to this will have a great time. Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 204 with Priya Gore.
