We're back! Yes, after a whole week off for the Christmas holidays, the Empire Podcast has returned to darken your aural doors once more, and the first pod of 2025 is an absolute belter, as Chris Hewitt sits down with four incredible guests. First, he talks carousel horses and chocolate with We Live In Time stars, Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. [24:27 - 36:32 approx] Second, he welcomes Nosferatu star Nicholas Hoult back to the pod, and they talk about embracing fear, giving golf lessons in costume, and Hoult taking over the pod one day. [55:19 - 1:11:23 approx] Third, he has a lovely natter with Giovanni Ribisi about his 15-year overnight success as DP of last year's excellent Strange Darling, which is available now in various formats for your home viewing pleasure. [1:41:51 - 1:57:00 approx] Then, in the podbooth, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara and debutante Becky Darke for a fun episode in which they make bold and no doubt wildly off-kilter box office predictions for the year ahead, discuss Chris Nolan's The Odyssey (and not Draclier, bah!), and then review Nosferatu, Nickel Boys, and We Live In Time. The perfect listening accompaniment to that Celebrations sandwich you're currently making, we reckon. Enjoy.
What's up, Rotters! For the second episode of Vicious Varsity, I'm joined by Becky Darke and Mike Muncer aka the Dream Warriors to discuss the truly unhinged and joyous KILLER PARTY (1986) This Canadian sorority slasher has hidden low on the radar for decades but we decided it's time for it to show itself! With its indecipherable timeline and hilariously ambiguous killer identity, it deserves a place on the Brain Rot shelf. ————

One of the only female-directed films in the entire Empire/Full Moon canon, Anita Rosenberg's ASSAULT OF THE KILLER BIMBOS is a funny, sunny sexploitation romp that's just a little bit smarter than it has to be. Joshua Tonks (actor and screenwriter, The Latent Image (2022)) and Becky Darke (The Evolution of Horror, Don't Point That Horror At Me and Return to Eerie, Indiana podcasts) return to Flixwatcher to review Josh's choice Stand by Me. Stand by Me (1986) is a coming-of-age drama directer by Rob (When Harry Met Sally) Reiner and based on the Stephen King novella, The Body. Set in a fictional town of Castle Rock, Oregon in 1959 it tells the story of four friends who go on a hike to find the body of a missing boy. Starring Wil Wheaton as Gordon "Gordie”, River Phoenix as Chris, Corey Feldman as Teddy and Jerry O'Connell as Vern. Even though they are only aged 12 they all have their own struggles, Gordie is grieving the loss of his older and influential brother Dennis "Denny”, Teddy's father is mentally ill, Chris is affected by his families bad reputation and Vern is bullied for his weight. The story is told in a flashback from the point of view of the “writer” who is now an adult Gordon, played by Richard Dreyfuss. Unsurprisingly Stand by Me is rated ‘most liked' on Netflix, it's period piece charm and engaging child actor performances make it the much loved classic and the Flixwatcher scores reflect this. With a runtime under 90 minutes it also scored high on repeat viewing to score 4.42 overall. Becky Darke (The Evolution of Horror, Don't Point That Horror At Me and Return to Eerie, Indiana podcasts) and Joshua Tonks (actor and screenwriter, The Latent Image (2022)) join Flixwatcher to review Becky's choice Cam. Cam (2018) is a psychological horror thriller directed by Daniel (How to Blow Up a Pipeline) Goldhaber. It stars Madeline Brewer as Alice, AKA Lola, a cam girl with ambitions of being the number one ranked girl on the website FreeGirlsLive. One day Alice finds herself locked out of her account and discovers a doppelgänger Lola active and performing on livestreams. Unable to access her account, Alice determined to get it back blurs the lines between Alice and Lola to find out who or what is has taken her identity. Cam might start as a standard slasher film but it doesn't go down the usual route. While the set up doesn't quite match the ending it is still an interesting and chilling film that looks at identity, isolation and the role technology has on our lives. Recommendability scores for Cam were high and with a runtime of 93 minutes, engagement and repeat viewing scores were also strong to give an overall rating of 3.74. Happy Friday, CHUDs! What a doozy we have in store this week for EPISODE 147! Our guest this week is a multi-hyphenate best known for THE LATENT IMAGE and Michael Varrati's SO FAR, SO CLOSE... He is also a frequent contributor to The Evolution of Horror AND co-hosts the podcast RETURN TO EERIE, INDIANA (with past guest Becky Darke)... it's JOSHUA TONKS! Now, we have done a lot of Wes Craven films on the show but this one... Oh, this one... MIGHT just be the most divisive one yet. Josh is obviously a fan. Mitch is, obviously, seeing it for the first time and Andy does not rate it. How will this go? The synopsis is as follows... In the small town of Riverton, a local legend tells of a serial killer's oath to come back and kill the seven children who were born on the night he supposedly died. Now 16 years later, Riverton residents are disappearing again, making some wonder if the legend is true. Bug (Max Thieriot), plagued by nightmares all his life, is one of the so-called Riverton Seven, and it's up to him to save his friends from an evil that will not rest. In our first episode of 2020, we dive in our first TV show AND a Very Important One at that: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The beloved cult TV series, created by Joss Whedon, ran for seven seasons from 1997 til its finale in 2003. The series' protagonist is the titular Buffy, a teenage girl trying to make sense of high school whilst also grappling with being the Slayer, the latest in a long line of young women chosen by fate to battle against vampires, demons, and other forces of darkness. We're going to be specifically focusing on how witchcraft is presented throughout the whole series, paying special attention to the evolution of the show's main witch, Willow Rosenberg (played by Alyson Hannigan), who over the course of seven seasons transforms from a shy, studious girl into the most powerful witch in the Buffyverse. Anna is joined by podcaster and Buffy connoisseur Becky Darke to discuss magic crack dens, magic as a metaphor for female sexuality, the balance of power, and the very few warlocks presented throughout the show. *** To coincide with our season of films and events, Here Be Witches, we will be focusing this first series on exploring all things witchcraft on film. Each episode, we will dive deep into films and TV shows that we can't necessarily screen. Each episode, we'll be joined with special guests to dissect and discuss a film or show, its legacy and the way witches are represented.
