This was such a fun interview and I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. From an early age Nath was a story teller. Throughout his early life he followed creative pursuits from music, roles in high school musicals to creative writing. He dreamed of being an actor in his teenage years but as life does, life went a different way. He wrote as a hobby through his early and mid-twenties, but it was not until his late thirties when he started stand-up comedy, that his writing became a focus. In 2020 he was preparing to start writing his first hour comedy show to tour New Zealand's Fringe Festival circuit, however he had no drive for comedy at the time and found himself writing stories once more. Within a month he had written the first draft of Slaveboy, which was published on 6th December 2020. He quickly followed up with the second book in the series, Bloodchild. After a life of looking, he had finally found his direction and his drive. As a published author, he now has the medium to share his stories, share his vision and share his imagination. Octavia Butler's “Bloodchild” is a coming-of-age story, featuring Gan, a young man living on a faraway planet--which at some point in the distant past was colonized by humans. The planet is home to a sentient giant worm-like people. When the humans first arrived, they tried to kill the worms. The worms, in turn, tried to enslave the humans, as they could be used to incubate their own young. But now, it seems, the planet has reached a kind of precarious balance. The humans and the worms are able to live side-by-side. The worms protect the humans by giving them lands to live on, away from worm society. In exchange, the humans--specifically the boys and men--are used as breeding stock for the worm eggs. Octavia E. Butler published science fiction from the 1970s until her death in 2006. She studied at the Screenwriter's Guild Open Door Program and the Clarion Science Fiction Writers' Workshop, where she met other science fiction writers, like Harlan Ellison, and began publishing her stories, the first of which was 1971's “Crossover.” She influenced numerous women of color currently writing science fiction and fantasy such as Jewelle Gomez, N. K. Jemisin, Nnedi Okorafor, Nisi Shawl, and Nalo Hopkinson, to name a few. She was the first science fiction writer to win a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, one among many awards and honors she received, including multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards and a Locus Award. She is probably best known for her 1979 novel Kindred and her 1985 novella “Bloodchild,” both of which are often taught in literature classrooms. Her novels Parable of the Sower (1993) and Parable of the Talents (1998) are eerily prescient explorations of post-apocalyptic dystopia. Her final novel Fledgling (2005) was her take on vampires and the topic of today's discussion.

Octavia Butler’s Bloochild and Other Stories was originally published in 1995.  The book collects seven stories from throughout Butler’s career, and in this episode we focus on the title story, which depicts a social and sexual relationship between humans and a race of alien beings.  Later, we discuss the penultimate story in the collection, Amnesty, which explores the complexities of confrontation with the alien other.    Over the course of the episode, we examine the degree to which the stories may be said to engage with slavery and American history, and consider Butler’s implementation of the ‘pregnant man’ motif.  Bibliography: ‘Mama's Baby, Papa's Slavery? I traveled to Los Angeles for a guest spot on @lestalkradio with @chelleychellesig and to connect with soooooo many inspiring and dope asf queer womxn of color. These folks are curating spaces for a demographic that often finds it hard to just BE in the spaces available, and to be more wholly understood. In addition to recounting my charmed visit, I delve deeply into a shorty story in the "Bloodchild" collection, called The Evening and the Morning And the Night. It's a reading of an hour and some, so skip to the last segment if you're not up for that just yet. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jh2bhere/support

A new month, a new book! Or in this case, series of books. The Binti Trilogy is a set of short novellas by Nnedi Okorafor. Together they are about the same size as a novel (and about the cost). They tell the story of a young woman in Western Africa who gets an invitation to the best university in the galaxy, and leaves everything she knows to attend. However, these aren't your typical chosen one or fish out of water school stories, and they take a lot of unexpected twists and turns along the way. We loved the first two novellas when we read them, and so we're excited to get to re-read and finish the whole trilogy, especially after the diappointment of our last book! In this spoiler-free episode, Adrian and Matt discuss the musical and literary roots of Afrofuturism, Adrian's experience going from a rural town to a major university, and why we love these books so much. Instead of doing one post-read episode this month, we're going to be doing a shorter post-read episode week for a successive novella. The novellas and our schedule are: - Binti (June 12)- Binti: Home (June 19)- Binti: The Night Masquerade (June 26) And some of the other works we mention include: - Afrofuturism by Ytasha L. Womack (highly recommended intro)- Sun Ra & His Archestra- A Love Supreme by John Coltrane- Harnessed the Storm by Drexciya- ATLiens by OutKast- Blazing Arrow by Blackalicious- Dirty Computer by Janelle Monáe (album / movie)- Bloodchild and Lillith's Brood by Octavia Butler- Dhalgren and Nova by Sam Delany- The Broken Earth Trilogy by NK Jemisin- Black Panther by Ryan Coogler (soundtrack by Kendrick Lamar) As always, we'd love to hear from you! Tweet us at @spectologypod, submit the episode at r/printSF, or email us at spectologypod@gmail.com with your thoughts about the book. In particular, check out our twitter this month, where we'll be posting a lot of great Afrofuturist art, music, and other resources.  Many thanks to Dubby J and Noah Bradley for doing our music and art.

Episode 7 of Fantastic Transmissions is about Bloodchild by Octavia E Butler. Bloodchild is a multiple-award-winning story by a multiple-award-winning author about the symbiotic (or parasitic?) relationship between a human colony and their insectoid overlords. We discuss the idea of male pregnancy, and attempt to answer the big question about Bloodchild: is it about slavery? The intro music is sampled from Clyde Borly and His Percussions, off the album "Music in Five Dimensions." The rest of the music in the podcast was created by Blue Dot Sessions. Their work can be found on the Free Music Archive under a Non-Commercial Attribution License. Hi- going on a road trip with my 22 year old daughter from North Carolina back home to Texas in late November. Looking for an audiobook recommendation to listen to on the drive- something possibly set in the south with a mystery or supernatural bent. We like smart characters and a plot that is twisty. --Jen   2. Hi ladies! I am a librarian at a small library outside Philadelphia with a HUGE book-club-in-a-bag collection (it comes with books, audiobooks, discussion materials--the whole works). I've just recently taken over the collection and I realized that it is tragically white. I'm doing what I can to remedy that, but I was hoping for some suggestions for diverse, newer, fairly accessible book-club lit (or non-fiction!) for the collection. We've got The Underground Railroad, The Mothers, Little Fires Everywhere, Behold the Dreamers, and Between the World and Me, to name a few. Thanks so much! --Katherine   3. Hi Amanda and Jenn!! I listen to Get Booked religiously, and you guys have steered me into so many things I've absolutely loved. I just finished the Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, and it's left me craving more books with meaningful, adult-child relationships where at least one party is choosing to be in the others' life (adoption, mentor-ship, and similar.) What I specifically loved about A.J. and Maya was how genuinely they liked each other as people. I'd love to read more in that vein, if you have any recommendations? Thanks! --Lauren   4. Hello! First I want you to know that I love the show. My TBR list is huge now and My husband keeps side eyeing me as I bring new books home. I'm currently reading Doomsday Book by Connie Willis and it has made me realize how much I love books about the Middle Ages or Medieval times. I've also read the Inquisitor's Tale and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. What other recommendations do you have that take place in that time or are similar to those books? Thanks so much!! --Olivia   5. I suffer from a chronic pain condition and would like to find books that have conditions similar to mine (or other disabilities). Memoir or fiction would be great. I've read both of Jenny Lawson's books and cried when I found out that she had arthritis because I do not get to read about people with similar experiences much. (No Me Before You please!) --Emily   6. Hi Get Booked Ladies! I have always loved Science Fiction and in the last few months have really gotten into short story collections. I have recently read "Stories of Your Life" by Ted Chiang (this is probably going to be my favorite book of the year), "Bloodchild" by Octavia Butler, and "Three Moments of an Explosion" by China Mieville. I have also loved in the past "The Illustrated Man" by Ray Bradbury. I currently have "Beyond the Rift" by Peter Watts and "Miracle" by Connie Willis on my upcoming TBR. I am looking for some more interesting and well written sci-fi short story collections! I enjoy hard sci-fi and first contact stories. Dark, weird, speculative, and bizarre are also great descriptors for me. Just FYI...I don't really like fantasy (I never understood why sci-fi and fantasy are clumped together). Thank you so much and love your show! --Andrea :)   7. Hi! I teach high school English, and often listen to the podcast on my way to work, which makes for a lovely commute (but also makes it impossible to write down all of the books I want to read). I work with several young people who are hunters, and want to read about hunting/survival/outdoorsy stuff. We have Paulsen's Hatchet and sequels and Si-cology 101 (Duck Dynasty), which have been popular among this group, and one student is reading Where the Red Fern Grows. Another of these readers started American Sniper but never finished it, and they've all read The Hunger Games. I'm ordering some Jon Krakauer, but I'm looking for more recommendations that might strike a chord with this group of readers - fiction or nonfiction, especially things that are a little more grownup (YA is awesome - more of that, please, but I worry they're not challenged by some of the middle grades texts we have available). Thanks, and I promise to stop the car to listen to your reply (or, even better, listen with students) :) --Jennifer   Books Discussed A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet Jade City by Fonda Lee Crooked Letter Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin The Cutting Season by Attica Locke   Shelter by Jung Yun The Wangs vs The World by Jade Chang My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry by Frederik Backman, translated by Henning Koch (recommended by Elizabeth) Ginny Moon by Benjamin Ludwig A Bed of Spices by Barbara Samuel Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin The Escape by Mary Balogh The Right Way to Be Crippled and Naked, edited by Annabelle Hayse, Sheila Black, and Michael Northen Pain Woman Takes Your Keys by Sonya Huber Overclocked by Cory Doctorow Galactic Empires, edited by Neil Clarke The Land by Mildred Taylor (recommended by Danika) The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

She began writing at the age of sixteen, but her love of literature began as a child. Reading has always been a means of escape for her. Curling up with a good book helped her to explore the world and meet fascinating people. As she grew older, her appetite for reading grew immensely and the books became more diverse. She began to read books such as, J. California Cooper’s, Life Is Short But Wide, Treasure E Blue’s, Harlem Girl Lost, Octavia Butler’s Bloodchild, as well as the classic, Manchild In The Promised Land by Claude Brown. The excitement and joy of reading these various authors inspired her to begin writing. Her stories feature real people with real lives, real problems, and extraordinary passion. She wants her work to offer comfort in times when things don’t appear as if they are working out. Her passion for people, music, art, and life, fuel her writing. In the future, she would like to share her personal experiences with young women, by mentoring them or working with community-based programs.

Octavia Butler's short story Speech Sounds was first published by the December 1983 issue of Asimov's Science Fiction magazine. I read the story in her collection Bloodchild and Other Stories, published in 1995. Speech Sounds tells the story of a woman living in a postapocalyptic world where many people have lost the ability to speak or read. Have you read this story? Let me know what you think on Twitter @ShortSFreview. I'm posting these episodes as well as some of my own short stories onto my website http://www.joncronshaw.co.uk - my latest story Reaching for a Larlun is a surreal piece of fantasy fiction about the meeting of two minds. #scifi #SFF #NebulaAward s #HugoAwards
