Talking with British historian and folklorist Dr. Simon Young on the enduring presence of supernatural experiences in human life, with a focus on his folk lore project, the Fairy Census—a vast collection of contemporary fairy encounter accounts. We explore the shifting nature of fairy lore across time, the interplay between cultural perception and the supernatural, and the deeper psychological and sociological dimensions of these experiences.Young shares insights from his research, addressing theories of altered states, memory, and the collective unconscious while tackling criticisms of his work and methods. He discusses the history and revival of the Fairy Investigation Society, its eccentric origins in the early 20th century, and its modern role in documenting encounters that defy conventional understanding. The conversation extends to the broader role of folklore in human consciousness, the evolution of belief systems, and its relevance to human society. From fairies to the mechanisms of belief, from historical patterns to personal narratives, Dr Young provides a fascinating lens to understand myth and reality, exploring why stories of the otherworld persist—and what they reveal about us.Dr. Young is a Cambridge-educated historian based at the International Studies Institute in Florence.Excerpts:“In terms of human evolution, there seems to be a certain number of people who have very frequent supernatural experiences. Suppose that somewhere deep inside me, I have a conviction that the supernatural matters, that it's not an embarrassing part of Paleolithic society that sometimes somehow made it through to the present. It is something that to some extent to have healthy lives…What I mean by that is that supernatural experiences, I think, are just part of human programming and increasingly in a rational age, we've started to edit this out leave it to one side. It's become an embarrassment on many levels. I think the experience that people have has a real importance in their lives, and I think it also has real importance in our species…Individuals and society more generally have to be able to absorb and particularly in an age when religion is being rejected and ridiculed these more personal versions of spirituality I think become incredibly important…And I think it's useful to look and ask ourselves, well, what is this really for? What does it do?Timestamps* 02:23 - Exploring Fairy Lore and the Fairy CensusDr. Young describes his background in medieval history and his transition into folklore studies, particularly his fascination with fairy lore and the creation of the Fairy Census.* 04:32 - Transition from Medieval History to FolkloreHe explains how a serious illness in his 30s led him to reevaluate his academic focus, eventually leading him to folklore and supernatural studies.* 05:48 - Understanding Fairies Through TimeDr. Young discusses how the concept of fairies has evolved over centuries, influenced by cultural shifts, religious ideas, and artistic depictions.* 13:37 - Contemporary Views on FairiesDr. Young highlights modern perceptions of fairies, including the influence of Theosophy, Disney, and neo-pagan traditions in shaping current beliefs.* 20:57 - The Influence of Walter Evans WentzHe introduces Evans Wentz, an American folklorist who documented fairy encounters across Celtic regions but controversially attempted to prove their existence.* 30:23 - The Role of Supernatural Experiences in Human EvolutionDr. Young theorizes that supernatural experiences may have been an essential part of early human societies, with a small percentage of the population naturally predisposed to such encounters.* 35:36 - The Fairy Census: Goals and MethodologyHe explains the structure and purpose of the Fairy Census, aiming to collect 2,000 detailed accounts to analyze patterns in supernatural experiences.* 40:08 - Challenges and Criticisms of the Fairy CensusDr. Young acknowledges the self-selecting nature of his survey participants and discusses how this affects the objectivity and scientific validity of his data.* 48:01 - Memorable Accounts from the Fairy CensusHe shares standout stories from the Census, including a man who repeatedly submits his childhood fairy encounter, demonstrating how deeply these experiences remain ingrained in memory.* 55:42 - The Role of Supernatural Experiences in Modern LifeDr. Young reflects on the growing rejection of institutional religion and how personal supernatural encounters might fulfill a psychological or spiritual need in contemporary society.* 01:02:48 - Boggarts and Other Folkloric ResearchHe delves into his research on Boggarts, a distinct type of supernatural entity in northern English folklore, separate from traditional fairies.* 01:04:25 - Final Thoughts and Future DirectionDr. Young expresses his belief that supernatural experiences are a meaningful part of human culture and invites listeners to contribute their own encounters to the Fairy Census.LinksDr Simon Academia Site / Fairy Census SubmissionBoggart and Banshee PodcastBooksNote: Illustration above from Oberon, Titania and Puck with Fairies Dancing circa 1786 William Blake 1757-1827 Presented by Alfred A. de Pass in memory of his wife Ethel 1910 Source Get full access to Leafbox at leafbox.substack.com/subscribe

The UK has had a long history of strange encounters with black, hulking shapes that leave the witnesses or experiencers shaken to the core. To some, these encounters are being manipulated to fit an agenda of promoting their stance that Bigfoot has crossed the Atlantic to take up residency here in the British Isles, yet for many others, these interactions are simply a continuation of the centuries old sightings of ghostly monks. Yet even this doesn't quite cover all the experiences. Could these encounters be down to the Fae, Boggarts, the Universal Trickster or something else entirely? Dr Simon Young is a British folklore historian based in Italy. He has written extensively on the nineteenth-century supernatural. His book The Boggart (from Exeter University Press) and The Nail in the Skull and Other Victorian Urban Legends (from Mississippi University Press) are both out in 2022. He is the editor of Exeter New Approaches to Legends, Folklore and Popular Legends . Dr. Young has undertaken the biggest folklore survey of its kind, on behalf of the Fairy Investigation Society. A Cambridge-educated historian Dr. Young, revived the society for a new fairy census - 60 years on from the last one. It gathered details of as many fairy sightings from the past century as possible and to measure contemporary attitudes to fairies, the details of which he shares with us in the show. Simon briefly discusses his new title ‘The Boggart, Folklore, History, Place-names and Dialect. Detailing the little-studied and once much-feared boggart is a supernatural being from the north of England. . We discuss the Wollaton Gnomes - a famous sighting that happened in 1979 in Nottingham, England. A small group of children were wandering the park early one evening when much to their surprise they were chased by gnomes in motor cars! In the Plus section of the show we discuss how children's cultural trends and images can become folkloric figures in their own right and create moral panics. We discuss the nightmare and the interest fairies have in human sexuality. Simon goes into detail how fairy interactions have changed over the last 200 years from more intense, sometimes physical encounters to more sedate sightings. The subject of UFOs and the arguments for and against the fairy analogues come up and we explore some interesting ideas around the men in black and the wider thematic interrelations between the phenomenons. Simon goes on to describe the fairies as ‘social beings' and how they represent a distorted mirror of our own society which provides a way we can think of ourselves outside the box. When most of us think of the term boggart, we probably first come up with the idea of a shapeshifting creature represented in the Harry Potter universe. But this is nothing like the actual folkloric creature which the word actually refers to. Boggarts have not been studied in particularly great detail until recently – they are a supernatural being specific to the north of England but having much in common with other creatures from our folklore.Joining Folklore Podcast creator and host Mark Norman to discuss the subject is historian and author Simon Young. Simon disputes the traditional description put forward by Katharine Briggs that the Boggart was a goblin-like creature, but argues that instead it was a much more general term which encompassed aspects of most solitary supernatural creatures from mermaids to ghosts and all points in between. This approach goes a long way to demonstrate how the continual misrepresentation of the boggart by earlier folklorists led to the fantasy version of the creature that we know today. The Folklore Podcast is an independent podcast, part of The Folklore Network which is striving to collect and preserve folklore material in all forms for future generations. Between Animagi, Werewolves, Metamorphmagi, Veelas, and Boggarts there is a lot to cover— and we need the Greeks, scholar Llewelyn Negrin, a history of Calvinism, and, of course, Judith Butler, to do it!Join us for a discussion on shapeshifting, as we apply what we've learned from our episodes on lycanthropy, female monstrosity and animal studies, to take a closer look at Nymphadora Tonks, in particular. Let's get to know one of the most beloved queer icons from the Wizarding World a bit better, shall we?Note: The sound on this episode is a little funky because we recorded it in-person! Just know that any hiccups you hear (other than the ones caused by Baby Blast-Ended Screwt) are the price we paid to enjoy one another's company during an in-person recording for the first time in two years!***We are running a Holiday Patreon Drive! We share with the husband about the response to the Iris episode, specifically reading a listener email who cautioned against it. We process our response to her response with the husband, and look at what it triggered in us and why. The husband shares about his depression and how he handles those dark thoughts. Trigger warning for reference to suicidal thoughts, but no discussion of detailed plans or safety concerns.
Riddikulus! In episode 11 of the Half-Blood Princesses, Demi and Jess talk all about boggarts. Topics include a quote about boggarts, boggarts fun facts, and a discussion about many characters and their boggarts. Demi and Jess start off by exploring Harry's boggart. Then, they talk about two incredible female stars, Molly and Hermione. Many characters' fears are revealed in Lupin's Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson and boggarts, so the hosts dive into those as well. Have you ever wondered what Dumbledore and Voldemort's boggarts are? J.K. Rowling confirmed them in the past, and Demi and Jess discuss them, too. Finally, the episode wraps up by exploring possible boggarts for four characters the boggarts aren't revealed for in the books, Draco, Luna, Snape, and Ginny. The fastest way to destroy a boggart is with laughter, so get ready when a deep conversation about Harry's dementor boggart meets “Fearless” by Taylor Swift, Lupin's full moon boggart becomes a disco ball, and much more! Happy Halloween week, witches, wizards, and magical people! In this week’s episode, Tylor, Jordan and Emma get into the spooky festive spirits with a discussion about dark magical creatures, and how fear influences perceptions of beings in both the wizarding world and muggle world! Also in this episode: What makes a magical creature a ‘dark’ magical creature? Liberating language and the power of projecting fear and intolerance onto other beings Exploring instances of magical creatures suffering from their label as a ‘dark’ or ‘dangerous’ magical creature A thrilling tangent about Dementors being non-beings and how to empathize with Boggarts How can we protect ‘dark’ creatures? What’s the best way to learn how to cohabitate with animals considered ‘dangerous’ in the muggle world? Can you think of other dark magical creatures in the Harry Potter series? How do you think we can better encourage the protection and care of creatures in the muggle world many would consider dangerous and fearsome? It's our annual Halloween episode and we discuss the scariest moments in the Harry Potter series! Some our favorite past Halloween episodes have included Episode 61: Ghosts (https://www.mugglecast.com/episode-61/) in Harry Potter and Episode 343: Halloween Happening (https://www.mugglecast.com/episode-343-fantastic-beasts-not-2/) ! In Sorcerer's Stone: Fluffy and Professor Quirrell's death are just two of the most terrifying moments for 11-year-old Harry. Aragog, the Baslisk, Tom Riddle's possession of Ginny and Gilderoy Lockhart - could Chamber of Secrets be the scariest book in the series? With werewolves, mass murderers, death omens and dementors, Prisoner of Azkaban certainly holds its own! Goblet of Fire gave us Death Eaters at the Quidditch World Cup, the madness of Mr. Crouch, an impostor professor and the return of Voldemort! Terrifying gets taken to new level with Dolores Umbridge in Order of the Phoenix! Did Inferi, Horcruxes, Dumbledore reliving his worst memory or Katie Bell's attack give us the biggest scare in Half-Blood Prince? We can't conclude the discussion without mentioning Bathilda "Nagini" Bagshot and Bellatrix's torture of Hermione in Deathly Hallows! Acromantulas, Lethifolds, Kelpies and more! The hosts muster up their best Halloween voices to describe some of the creepiest beasts in the Harry Potter series! Quizzitch: How many Muggles did the Opal Necklace reportedly kill? This week Bri & Ber discuss a creature that is well know in British folklore, the Boggart! They go over it's origins, some of the well known stories, how to know you're being haunted by one, and how you may have heard of it in pop culture today. As well as making the discovery that Ber's youngest child just might be one, due to many eerie similarities.

Lancashire is the County I was born in. It's a place I hold close to my heart. I grew up hearing stories of Jenny Greenteeth, Boggarts and Nut nans. Strange creatures that inhabit the woodlands and scare off any folk who may be passing by. Their stories are our stories, they are in our history, our folklore and within our families, but would it surprise you to know, these are not the only Creatures hiding in Lancashire's Woodlands and Wild Places. These days we use the word 'Bigfoot' to describe any creature, up on two legs, usually hairy and Ape like in description. The reports of these strange Creatures are made by ordinary people, doing ordinary things when they encounter something impossible. As Halloween approaches and Autumn rolls in, I thought I would take the opportunity to share some of the Stranger reports I have received whilst collecting personal stories from ordinary folks who live in Lancashire. Stories of Upright Wolves, commonly known as Werewolves, Wulvers or Dogmen. These Creatures are often described as being as “large as a Pony and thickly muscled. With snouted faces and Canine teeth” these Creatures are the critters from our nightmares, they are certainly fierce enough to keep you up at night. Some Lancashire residents came face to face with these inexplicable horrors in some of our most beautiful Places. The Forest of Bowland hosts a very strange Creature and ‘It’ was witnessed by two Lancashire Residents in the 1990’s and in 2014. One witness is a resident of Lancashire enjoying a family break. The other is a wild camper who has camped in some of our remotest areas alone until an event at Wolfs Hole Crag ended that hobby for him. The witnesses both contacted me by email and are happy to share their encounters in the hopes of finding some answers.Do you enjoy our uploads and articles? Do you love a good mystery? Hobgoblins are like little elves but you have the good (cleaning your House), the bad (will attempt to eat your pets) and the ugly…..just plain ugly! If you see one you may even describe it to have alien features. Some are believed to inhabit the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky, making abandoned mine shafts their home! Jas and Sher, your audio curators discuss the legend and folklore that the Hobgoblin myths (?) are based on. You decide if this is all poppycock or perhaps the descriptions of actual encounters. Boggarts dwell close to Humans, in their house, barn or nearby hill or cave and it is well known that their appearance and temperament vary depending on the region in which they live. They love to perplex, frighten and annoy us, but rarely cause long-term harm.Encounters and sightings suggest they appear to favour the North of England. We know they are sometimes super helpful, sometimes bothersome, sometimes so infuriating you sell your house, pack your belongings and move overseas just to get away from your local Boggart.Oh, did I mention Boggarts love to travel? They do, and will follow you wherever you go. Across vast oceans, through raging rivers and over treacherous mountains, once a Boggart has attached itself to you or your family, you best get used to their company. But there is one fella from the clan of Boggarts who stands out from all others. The Scottish Bogle. Also known as: The Death Bogle. One look at this fella and you’ll wish you were walking over a treacherous mountain barefoot, or swimming a vast ocean backstroke…He is silent, he is deadly. He is fast, he is determined. He always collects what he came for.*Kitty offers some tips on how to avoid the Scottish Bogle, takes a look at the difference between Faeries and Ghosts, and reminds you it okay to believe in the Good People.Have you encountered or sighted the Good People yourself?Perhaps you know someone who has, or have an old tale of the Good People told in your family?Don’t be shy, Kitty would love to hear your tale. Are faeries real? Where do faeries live? What's the difference between pixies and faeries? Those are some readers' questions answered by Fiona Broome in this 15-minute podcast about faeries and boggarts. The questions include: Are faeries real? Do faeries exist? What do faeries look like? How do you see faeries? Is there proof that faeries are real? Is there proof that faeries aren't real? How do faeries procreate? Where do faeries live? What is the difference between pixies and faeries? Can Christians believe in faeries? After that, Fiona talks about one kind of faerie, a boggart. Boggarts are shape-shifters, and a good example of the darker side of the faerie realm. Though boggarts can seem like demons or poltergeists, they aren't actually demons. Some boggarts might be dangerous, but faeries -- in general -- are neither all good nor all bad. Don't let the boggarts scare you too much. In addition, Fiona recorded an outtake from this podcast. You'll find it at FaerieMagick.com in the Podcasts section. In tonight’s episode of PotterFicWeekly, our hosts discuss Chapters 39 through the Outtakes of Backward with Purpose, by Deadwoodpecker, proving once again that our hosts can and will, when given the opportunity, turn something totally benign into a confusing mess, monologue incessantly and gossip like old women. In the eighth episode of Potter And Daughter, Joel and Lily tackle the first seven chapters of Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban and ask the questions, “Who is Sirius Black, and why does everyone think he's after Harry?” They also discuss magical pets, new Hogwarts professors (Remus Lupin and… Hagrid?!), and malicious magical creatures like Dementors and Boggarts. Our theme song is “This Book Is So Awesome” by Harry and The Potters.
