While most of the country makes New Year's resolutions that kick in right after January 1st, in Louisiana, there tends to be a slight postponement. That's because Carnival Season, a time of indulgence, kicks off on January 6th with the astounding king cake eating and cocktail drinking that comes with it. So, our resolutions about healthy living and sobriety tend to wait until Ash Wednesday – the day after Mardi Gras. This week, we hear from experts about the merits of clean living. Since she first opened her practice, Dr. Erika Siegel has extolled the virtues of eating the right foods as the foundation of good health. Across a decade and a half, the naturopathic physician collected all of her sage advice and put it into a book, "The Nourish Me Kitchen." The first half of the two-volume set offers easily digestible recommendations from stocking a healthy pantry to getting a good night's sleep. The second half features more than 300 recipes for creating healthy and delicious meals. Dr. Siegel joins us in the studio to discuss her book and share some practical advice on achieving and maintaining optimal health. Then, two of the Big Easy's native sons, Chris Copeland and Dan Forman tell us about how their NOLA Detox and Recovery Center incorporates New Orleans-style hospitality and food to help clients overcome addiction. It's officially carnival season in New Orleans and around the world, so we wanted to take this time to look at variations on Mardi Gras celebrated across different cities. Two years ago, we brought you the International Carnival roundtable, where we learned about Masopust in the Czech Republic, Shrove Tuesday in Cape Verde, and Carnaval in Uruguay. Today, we're focusing on Carnival in three North American cities. We are joined by Marie-Eve Jacob, the general director of the Quebec Winter Carnival; Mack Bradley, the president of the Mardi Gras Foundation in St. Louis; and RoShelle Salinas, spokesperson for Mardi Gras Galveston. They take us from the beaches to the snow to help us explore Carnival history and traditions in their regions. ___Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Bob Pavlovich Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber. Substance Abuse Advisory Council Secretariat Statement for Carnival Season 2024

The carnival season is now in high gear and it is truly an exciting time for lovers of this festival. A time for fun, for frolic and for freeing up. With all the energy and excitement that comes with this time of year, we at the Substance Abuse Advisory Council Secretariat encourage to all to spare a moment. Let's also plan on making safety a priority; your safety and that of others. Alcohol has traditionally featured greatly in our carnival celebrations and though we by no means promote its use, to reduce harmful effects, there are simple things that can be done. Do not drink if you have not eaten. Ensure what you choose to eat is not salty as both salt and alcohol cause dehydration. After every drink with alcohol, be sure to have water. Do not accept drinks from strangers and if someone is serving you a beverage, it is best to watch as it is being prepared, poured and served to you. Importantly, for you and for fellow road users, anyone who is driving a vehicle should not be drinking any alcohol. Drinking alcohol negatively affects coordination, alertness and good judgement. Do not drink and then get behind the wheel of a vehicle to drive. Vendors sales and profit are both important but not at the expense of our children. Do not sell or serve any drink with alcohol to children. To people who have a habit of smoking, our public spaces including the carnival parties and shows, are shared spaces of enjoyment. Let us be considerate. Smoking of any kind in any public space makes it uncomfortable for non-smokers and can affect the health of people who have certain health challenges. Let's just clear the air by keeping it smoke free. Let's make choices to create a memorable, inclusive and safe carnival for all who chose to be part of this year's events.

Health Tips during the Carnival Season     The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs provides guidance to the public to reduce the possible negative health implications during and after the carnival season.   During this season there is a tendency for participants to let their guard down on many different levels. It is important that precaution is taken to ensure safety for all at this time.   -       We advise that persons look out for each other during the events especially those during the night. Avoid dark isolated areas when going to and from events. Reduce opportunities for personal injury and violation.   -       Avoid dehydration by reducing exposure time in the direct sunlight, wearing of sunblock and sunscreen and increased water intake - Stay Hydrated! This is important during high level activities. Special consideration must be given to the elderly, young children and those with chronic health conditions who are particularly prone to dehydration.   -       Avoid excessive alcohol intake as this also leads to dehydration, injuries, violence and road fatalities when persons drive under the influence. Timely eating is also advised. There are limited Intensive care beds available at the hospitals and usually during this period we note increase patient flow in the Accident and Emergency Department at the Hospital. The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs informs the general public of the low blood supply at the blood bank at this time. We urge you, if possible to make an urgent blood donation at the blood bank or the various collection sites.   -       Sleep deprivation and exhaustion also leads to increased motor vehicle accidents as persons may fall asleep while driving. Ensure you get sufficient rest between events or appoint a designated driver if you feel tired or sleepy.   -       The majority of the planned activities are in open spaces and on evenings, we are in the rainy season and we normally note increases in mosquito indices at this time. The public is advised to take the necessary precaution and use insect repellants to reduce mosquito bites.   -       Annually we note increases in sexually transmitted infections after the carnival season. We advise against unsafe sexual practices. The Ministry of Health will be donating condoms to carnival bands and planning associations to ensure they are available to revelers. Condoms are available at the Infectious Disease Unit on the first floor of the Sir Stanislaus James Building on the Waterfront to the carnival bands and at the various Wellness Centers free of charge to the public.   The Ministry of Health would like the public to enjoy the carnival season responsibly and keep healthy during and after the season.   For more information, please contact the Bureau of Health Education, at the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs at telephone numbers 468-5349/468-5342.

Most of the country makes New Year's resolutions that kick in right after January 1st. But in Louisiana, there tends to be a slight postponement. Across a decade and a half, the naturopathic physician collected all of her sage advice and put it into a book, The Nourish Me Kitchen. The first half of the two-volume set offers easily digestible recommendations from stocking a healthy pantry to getting a good night's sleep. It's an annual celebration of ruckus and revelry: carnival season has kicked off in France, bringing an explosion of colour to the grey months of winter. From the Latin "carne vale" meaning "farewell to meat", the ancient festival has evolved into a collective moment of excess ahead of the Christian period of Lent. From overseas in Guadeloupe, to down south in Nice, and even up north, France is letting loose. The France in Focus team reports. For this edition, we visit Dunkirk, a northern French city that for many brings to mind World War II, but it's also the host of one of the country's biggest and liveliest carnivals, with events lasting for three months. Our team joined revellers in Brouckerque, just southwest of the city. We also met with local historian Olivier Vermersch. Finally, no talk of carnival season in France would be complete without mentioning Nice and its famous float parade. The celebration on the French Riviera is the biggest in the country and just marked its 150th anniversary last year. Our team joined the preparations for this year's parade.

The highlight is the great parade, with floats and dancers from all over the world who wind their way through the city center....and lots of gnocchi! But why are gnocchi intricately tied into Verona's Carnival Celebration? There's an important historical reason that dates back to 1531; have a listen to find out why!

Y'all I am just beside myself! We are embarking on our 4th season of this experiment- this love letter to New Orleans, that keeps being written. I set out looking for people, artists and creators that inspire not only me, be so many others every single day. Anyone that knows anything about New Orleans knows that right now is a unique and special time of the year where the locals and tourists alike revel in the streets for Mardi Gras! Starting January 6 each year on King's Day and party all the way up to Fat Tuesday on Mardi Gras day! One of my personal favorite parades to go to is a "Super Krewe" and rolls on Lundi Gras, the Monday night before Fat Tuesday! Founded 31 years ago by giant celebrity Harry Connick Jr, he wanted to create a Mardi Gras krewe that was made up of artists of all types. He wanted to make sure that his krewe would accept people of all creeds. Over the 3 decades that Orpheus has rolled, each year it has gotten a little bigger and prettier with all of the beautiful floats that make it one of the most sought after experiences of the whole Carnival Season! Renee Maxwell, Orpheus' entertainment director sat down with me recently to dish out some of the new details for the krewe this year! For example , Neil Patrick Harris and his HUSBAND David Burtka are the celebrity monarchs this year.  Yall, did you hear what I just said? A GAY COUPLE will grace the celebrity monarch float just like ANY OTHER over the years! This is the most inclusive work I have ever seen during recent years for Mardi Gras!Find out more details like Taylor Dayne performing at their Ball after the parade! Join us Lundi Gras- Feb 12 for the thirty first year of the Krewe of Orpheus! Find out everything at www.kreweoforpheus.comAnd then we welcome one of the Iconic beings in the Universe that is about to take to the streets TOMORROW NIGHT in the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacca! The Pink Wookie is synonymous with this walking krewe of space and fantasy revelry. Gary Griggs, the human being inside of the pink wookie sat down with me to talk about just HOW he was able to create such a memorable and vibrant character! The Krewe of Chewbacca may not be a "super krewe" but they are definitely a GIANT walking krewe with thousands of the most creative people in New Orleans! Join us tomorrow night!
