Hot Mess Millionaire
Black Men Criminalized to Labor For White Wealth from 1831-2022

Hot Mess Millionaire

Sis, the 13th Amendment abolished slavery — with one caveat: except if a former slave committed a crime. Laws were then put in place to have Black Men locked up for the tiniest infraction, mistakes, or missteps. Now, Black Men are still the workhorse for White wealth. This week, Dr. Venus breaks it down very slowly so we can get an understanding of what the Black Man's existence has been like since 1831, and how they have been forced to do labor: from peonage to convict leasing to simply stealing. The practice of enslaving Black Male bodies as free labor is as alive as real in 2021 as it was in 1831. Black Men are not afforded the freedom or opportunity to work for THEIR families or THEIR wealth, only for White Men through everything from the jail system to entertainment. Let's talk about it.    Key Takeaways: [2:33] In the 13th Amendment, after slavery was abolished, there was a clause that stated people cannot be enslaved unless they commit a crime. That crime could be anything from having papers on you to being on someone else's property, to even sneezing the wrong way. That became the basis of criminalizing Black Men, so much that it wasn't as much about the crime as it was replacing the labor force that was lost with the abolition of slavery.  [5:37] Black Men have been blocked from every possible avenue of making their own money legally since 1831. [8:32] Dr. Venus explains why she is sick and tired of Black Men being the scapegoat, and for people saying she is just making excuses for them. Not many account for what he has to go through just to stay alive and sane. It's also not common for people to think about what he needs in terms of actual medical care, mental health help, or more resources to just succeed. [9:38] They created what we now call the penal system and a structure that puts Black Men in prison. His body can now be used for labor by the state and by private companies (owned by White Men), so much so that the prison industrial complex is actually traded on the stock market.  [10:18] In 1946, California State camp programs used inmates as firefighters, but once they got released, the felony on their record prevented them from going out and getting work in that skill or trade. [16:38] We tend to blame the artist or rapper for putting out harmful lyrics and music, but how come no one points the blame at the record company or the larger powers that distribute this “dangerous” music? [17:54] There's no conversation about Black Men as people, only as providers and protectors. And if he messes up, then we take away everything he has. [19:22] While Black Women are now the most educated group in North America and the fastest-growing in the entrepreneurial space, Black Men aren't afforded the same opportunities and education. [20:37] One of the benefits Dr. Venus loves about being Black is how our ancestors knew they were not their bodies. They knew they were spiritual beings having a human experience. We come from a people who are spiritually grounded. [24:42] Black Men are positioned by the media in a way that makes them violent or sexualized. What they don't tell you is that that positioning is designed to flood the market to have Black boys continue to see themselves a certain way, which then will have them acting out. Then, they are pulled out of class, unable to continue their education, and need to go make money in a way that ends up with them getting picked up by the police and working for the government. [27:00] As Black Women, we have not looked at the social structures that have created a level of depression, anxiety, trauma, and mental unwellness with Black Men. [28:16] If a Black Man cannot make money for himself legally, he's going to make it another way to take care of his family or himself. When he does that, it gives White Supremacy a reason to enslave him and monetize him in a way that does NOT account for him as a human being. [30:28] Black Men were sexually exploited. They were forced to have sex with females White people put in front of them in order to produce more free labor. [34:41] Black Men are wounded, just like you. Just like all of us. To heal, we are going to have to come together and give Black Men grace and compassion.                                                                   Quotes: “We don't relate to Black Men as people. We relate to them the way White Supremacy has taught us to.” “When we penalize Black Men, we become the extension of White Supremacy in our relationships. We police them, we correct them. We speak down to them as if they are stupid. They are not stupid. They are wounded and hurt.” “Our ancestors knew they were not their bodies. They knew they were spiritual beings having a human experience. We come from a people who are spiritually grounded.” “Black Women, we have not looked at the social structures that have created a level of depression, anxiety, trauma, and mental unwellness with Black Men.” “We have been so pimped by White Supremacy that we have very little compassion for what Black Men go through.” “Look at the lessons and all the pain. There are plenty and their blessings from the pain. Personally, I think the pain is God's training ground for your calling.”   Mentioned: Dr. Venus Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram  “Hot Mess Millionaire” Amazon Pilot  “Hot Mess Millionaire” Complete Series (https://www.youtube.com/c/DrVenusOpalReese) Pre-order the GurrlApp here: www.TheGurrlApp.com/presale  Free Gift When You Join The Truth Tribe The Black Woman Millionaire Hot Mess Edition   ATTENTION BLACK WOMEN:   If you want to be THE FIRST to know about ALL things Dr. Venus' tech start-up, fill out the form below so you get access FIRST to updates, launches, and the behind the scene scoop! http://bit.ly/DrVenusAppInfo   RESOURCES Convict Leasing Fact check: Southern states used convict leasing to force Black people into unpaid labor Was Convict Leasing Just Legalized Enslavement? - ThoughtCo TIMELINE 1881 to 1900  |  African American Timeline: 1850-1925  |  Articles and Essays  |  African American Perspectives: Materials Selected from the Rare Book Collection  |  Digital Collections  |  Library of Congress 1901 to 1925  |  African American Timeline: 1850-1925  |  Articles and Essays  |  African American Perspectives: Materials Selected from the Rare Book Collection  |  Digital Collections  |  Library of Congress Race Relations in the 1930s and 1940s Change in the Labor Market For Black Americans, 1948-1972 Black-white wage gaps expand with rising wage inequality | Economic Policy Institute Mental Health and The School to Prison Pipeline How the Black Man Became Schizophrenic | Psychology Today Metzl, Jonathan. Thursday, November 7, 2019 Regardless of our institutions’ physical locations, our online collections are accessible worldwide. As museums embrace open access, the call to make digital surrogates of public domain assets freely available, and the associated requirement to evaluate and declare their rights status, increases. Yet, duration of copyright varies across countries; works that are in the public domain in one may remain under copyright in another. A work may be created in one jurisdiction, published (or the equivalent) in a second jurisdiction, housed and digitized in third, and aggregated and accessed worldwide. Exceptions, legal decisions and practices may also vary, while international copyright treaties aim to provide a baseline across countries. In a potentially groundbreaking development, Article 14 of the new European Union Copyright Directive codifies the equivalent of the US Bridgeman decision (i.e., no separate copyright in reproductions of public domain works) across EU member countries, which have two years to enact local legislation in compliance. What are the practical implications for online collections and collaborative digital projects with stakeholders from both EU and non-EU collections? And what are the corresponding ethical and moral rights implications related to digital cultural heritage? Does online access make every copyright question an international copyright question? Wednesday, November 6, 2019 Cultural heritage collections can reflect societal biases and sometimes leave out important stories. As studies show visitors invest significant trust in the information cultural organizations provide, it is critical we examine what we share online especially as researchers bring more sophisticated tools to bare. This panel will examine two projects as they work to create a diverse American history online; The Smithsonian American Women’s Initiative and The LGBTQ Digital History Project. In 2017, the ONE Archives Foundation and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (NMAH) launched a partnership to develop an open source digital platform connecting LGBTQ archives and community collections from across the nation, with the ultimate goal of developing a collaborative digital framework for documenting and sharing LGBTQ history. The Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative (AWHI), launched in 2017, has a key goal of telling a more complete American women’s history to include more stories of women from multiple cultural and gender-identification backgrounds. With the call from U.S. Congress to survey its 155 million collections for women’s history stories, what are the steps it will take to improve representation when only 150,000 of the over 40 million digital records are explicitly tagged with women-related topics? Airships are lighter than air craft whose history goes back to mid-nineteenth century France and comes to a screeching halt after World War Two. Learn more about what makes air ships such a unique part of aviation history in our latest Flight Deck Podcast episode! Joshua Carver, a student in our Museum Apprentice Program who’s about to begin his freshman year at Embry-Riddle University, created a fascinating presentation about airships as part of his apprenticeship at the Museum. During this time, he learned all about dirigibles, explosions, and how an aircraft carrier could fly back in 1931. Joshua traces airship history back to France in the mid-nineteenth century: “Balloons really were the posterchildren of France . . . they were the first country use balloons in combat.” Soon enough, balloons appeared on Civil War battlefields in the United States and were reborn in Germany as Zeppelins, created by none other than Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin. By the time World War One erupted, the Germans developed their Zeppelins to bomb and surveil the UK. And while the Zeppelins weren’t the most accurate war machines, they did fulfill the goal of psychological warfare: the British never knew where the zeppelins would be or where the bombs would drop. But airships in the US never quite succeeded militarily, as seen in the example of the USS Akron and the USS Macon. Learn more about the Museum Apprentice Program to get involved in fun Museum projects! And don’t forget to explore more amazing World War One artifacts via our Digital Collections. Did you have trouble figuring out your major when you were in college? If so, you already have one thing in common with the world’s first Korean astronaut, Soyeon Yi. After toying with the idea of becoming an industrial engineer—she always loved designing buildings and drawing—Soyeon Yi realized it wasn’t the right fit for her; then, through a process of elimination, she decided to pursue mechanical engineering all the way through graduate school. Soyeon Yi, who also happens to be a volunteer at the Museum, explains that throughout most of her life she didn’t like encountering difficulties, but realized she couldn’t continue the same pattern: “I stopped avoiding hurdles.” Eventually she became the only woman in her cohort accepted into the graduate program for mechanical engineering—an experience she didn’t yet realize would prepare her for a history-making stint as an astronaut. Presented by Sarah Peters Kernan, PhD The early centuries of cookbook production in England were filled with a dazzling variety of manuscript and printed texts. “Cookeries” from 1300 to 1700 ranged from basic, undecorated texts to lavishly illustrated cookbooks. In her extensive research, Sarah Peters Kernan, PhD, has examined numerous manuscripts and printed cookeries in libraries across the United States and Europe. Her research has led to new ways of thinking about how some of these books were used in kitchens, who was using early cookbooks, and how English cookbooks underwent dramatic changes. Join us as Sarah gives us a sweet and savory introduction to cookbooks of medieval and early modern England. She will show vivid food illustrations, and describe the types of recipes the books contained; their form (some are rolls, while most are in codex form), their decorations (some are plain and others have goldleaf illumination), and the manuscripts which contain these books (some were made for physicians and include illustrated surgical treatises, others were for wealthy merchant households, others seem to be for use in more “ordinary” homes). The earliest printed cookbooks in England reveal shifting audiences, moving from male gentry readers to middle class women by the late 1500s. The seventeenth century reveals a division in printed cookbooks between lavish tomes by prominent male chefs and books for frugal housewives. At the same time, hundreds of manuscript recipe books were produced by and for women of many socioeconomic levels to be passed down through generations and gifted between friends. These early centuries of cookbook production in England yielded a great range of fascinating cookbooks to explore and consider today. Sarah Peters Kernan, PhD Sarah is an Independent Culinary Historian in the Chicago area. Her research focuses on the production and use of cookbooks in medieval and early modern England. She has published in the journal Food & History and regularly writes blog posts for The Recipes Project. Sarah was a 2014 Food Studies Fellow at the New York Public Library. She currently works with Chicago’s Newberry Library, assembling modules on food history topics for their Digital Collections for the Classroom project, teaching adult seminars on food history topics, and appears on the Shelf Life podcast talking about chocolate. http://culinaryhistorians.org/whoever-said-english-cant-cook-cookbooks-1300-1700-prove-otherwise/

Preservation of Digital Collections and Dark Archives Long-term preservation of digital collections is a clear charter for libraries, but the path forward is often murky and daunting. Solutions vary due to collection composition, collection file structure, the technical expertise of the teams involved, and budget. Further, there are issues of stewardship, ownership and release of data in a usable form from dark archives. CLOCKSS, Portico and the Digital Preservation Network came together at Charleston in a panel presentation to share insights into what it takes for libraries to tackle the issue of long-term preservation. They discussed case studies and solutions that you can put to work. Come join us as we explore the dark side. Greg Suprock
