This week, we go full throttle as we sit down with none other than CCP Burger, Creative Director at CCP Games. Before the interview we also undock together and ran a Gallente Militia fleet alongside the man himself. Giving him a view of how we PvP in Galmil. We talk origins: how CCP Burger first got hooked on EVE, and what drives his creative vision, and how he sees the future of the game we love (and sometimes love to rage at). From personal insights to frontline explosions, this is a rare chance to hear from the devs while they're in the trenches with us.Expect war stories, fun questions, and a healthy dose of Federation propaganda.
Jon Jordan and BlockchainGamer.biz editor Jenny Jordan talk through the week's news including:[1:04] Much anticipated mobile game FIFA Rivals is now live via app stores.[2:00] The game includes NFTs on the Mythos chain but doesn't mention blockchain or NFTs at all.[2:45] The gameplay is deeper than Jon thought - you're tapping on players and drawing lines to pass.[5:32 ]The metagame is about getting the best 11 players you can, levelling and training them up.[6:32] Players can only be used a certain number of times, before you have to pay to reup them.[7:10] This could be a way of mitigating the pay-to-win aspect of having powerful NFTs.[8:05] As well as real player NFTs, there are also real club kits - teams in the FIFA Club World Cup.[11:22] There is already a Messi NFT in the game. Very expensive.[12:21] Craft World's play-to-airdrop event for Dyno Coin - called Project Voyager - has gone live.[15:10] The top 25,000 players will get an airdrop. It looks like over 100,000 are now playing.[16:16] A key mechanic is increasing your multipler by spending in-game crystals and other tokens.[19:02] EVE Frontier has launched its new cycle and dropped its previous NDA.[23:51] EVE Frontier is building a valuable blockchain economy from the bottom-up.[26:01] CCP Games has spent a lot of time educating PC game journalists about blockchain.[29:43] Nexon's MapleStory N is another MMOG highlighting the value of blockchain.[30:30] Like CCP Games, Nexon wants to create an ecosystem in which thirdparties can build.[31:12] Its Henesys blockchain peaked at over 80,000 DAUWs this week. [31:52] The MSU marketplace has hit 1 million wallets and $13 million NFT trading volume.[35:28] Why are some KOLs critical of MapleStory N?[38:34] Does this change when we see the first $100,000 NFT in MapleStory N?
Jon Jordan and BlockchainGamer.biz editor Jenny Jordan talk through the week's news including:[0:34] Much anticipated game Wildcard dropped its whitepaper.[1:09] CEO Paul Bettner worked on Age of Empires, created Words With Friends. Very smart.[3:00] This was the first time we got insight about how its blockchain works and it's not the game. [4:08] The blockchain bit is Thousands, an integrated Twitch-like spectator platform.[4:34] Wildcard is a F2P PC/console game with cosmetic IAPs. No NFTs. No crypto. [5:40] The WC token is 100% for the community. 20% has already been airdropped. [6:32] You can stake the token and also use it for prediction markets about the game's esport events.[7:55] There will also be Wildorgs, which will act as team franchises.[8:51] It looks like Wildcard will use blockchain for the things it's good for.[10:36] It's interesting that the developer and the investors aren't getting any tokens.[12:33] While Wildcard isn't using Apptokens, we see more games using Apptoken-style controls.[14:31] Pre-registrations for Axie Infinity: Atia's Legacy have passed 2.5 million.[24:44] For a successful web3 game, you need people spending fiat currency as well.[26:06] Even in this market, some games are growing - Alien Worlds, Nine Chronicles, Axie etc.[27:42] What's interesting are games that couldn't exist without using [35:47] "If EVE Online is Rome, EVE Frontier is the building of New York," says CCP Games' CEO.[38:46] EVE Frontier: it's like CCP Games building a specific sandbox platform for EVE games.[40:25] What's really interesting is what new sort of games can we build with blockchain.
Jon Jordan talks to CCP Games' CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson about why its forthcoming game EVE Frontier is being built open source and fully decentralized. [0:57] How and why Hilmar got interested in blockchain, starting with storing spaceships on Bitcoin.[6:04] Back in 2017, the crypto community was like the early MMOG communities.[7:00] I got more interested after the 2018 crash and I went to my first blockchain game conference.[9:07] Many MMOGs focus on a player's inventory being persistence, not world persistence. [10:12] For a persistent game, we should use technology known for being good at persistence.[14:30] A lot of software has been created to help players run companies in EVE Online. [16:16] Ethereum is a very adversial PVP environment, just like EVE Online. [17:15] EVE Frontier was designed so CCP Games and thirdparty devs have the same level of authority.[19:02] To make a proveable sound system, you end up with a lot of blockchain-like [21:30] "I think about EVE Online as being a city. If EVE is Rome, Frontier is a new city, say New York".[24:35] EVE Frontier is more of a survival experience, a multiplayer single sharded survival experience.[25:43] "What sort of Daniel Day-Lewis film is EVE Frontier?"[27:21] What do the current EVE Online players think about EVE Frontier?[32:20] "We are going to provide the city-building tools but we are not going to build the city."[36:32] Why is CCP Online also open-sourcing its own Carbon game development tools?[38:50] "In a decade's time, the city will be inherent better because everything is open-sourced."

CTO Series: Engineering Leadership, Automation, and Trust with Dan Hollinger In this CTO Series episode, we sit down with Dan Hollinger, an accomplished engineering leader passionate about fostering empathy, transparency, and trust in tech teams. Dan shares pivotal lessons from his career, from building scalable automation systems to navigating complex leadership challenges. We cover key strategies for aligning tech initiatives with business goals, fostering collaboration, and ensuring long-term technical health. Defining Leadership Through Automation and Empowerment “Enable your humans to focus on the interesting work—automation should take care of the rest.” Dan recounts his transformative experience at CCP Games, makers of EVE Online, where a robust test automation system changed his perspective on scaling technical processes. This role introduced him to the power of automation in freeing up engineers to focus on more exploratory and impactful tasks. He emphasizes how empowering self-directed teams with high-level vision statements enables creativity and innovation. Building Self-Correcting Processes “Always retro your processes—don't let them run on autopilot.” Dan explains the importance of self-correcting processes, using the SEV (Side Event) system as an example. He highlights how retrospectives can improve response times and prevent future crises. For Dan, consistent reviews are the key to maintaining agile, resilient systems that adapt to evolving needs. Bridging the Gap Between Business and Tech “There are no enemies—treat your colleagues like allies working toward a common goal.” In cross-functional environments, Dan's mantra is to focus on the project and maintain open communication. Drawing from his experience in gaming, where multiple departments collaborate on creative projects, he underscores the importance of empathy and curiosity. Asking questions and breaking down solutions into smaller, reviewable pieces can diffuse conflict and build trust. Future-Proofing Through Strategic Roadmapping “The lifespan of the solution dictates the scope of the work.” Dan shares his approach to strategic roadmapping by considering the expected longevity of technical solutions. He gives an example of building a feature flag system for a game studio that needed to support a long-term vision while adapting to a new game engine. His advice: break large goals into smaller, adaptable increments that align with future changes. Navigating Leadership Challenges During Organizational Change “Trust is your greatest currency during periods of uncertainty.” Dan reflects on a particularly challenging period when a leadership change caused a significant exodus of engineers at his company, leaving him with only one engineer. Despite the setback, Dan leaned into transparency and empathy, earning the trust of departing team members, which helped him transfer knowledge and rebuild the team. Expanding the Scope of Leadership “My role expanded from leading an engineering team to caring about the morale of the entire company.” A surprising revelation for Dan was realizing the broader impact of his leadership on non-engineering teams. He discusses how this shift required him to listen to and support colleagues across all departments, emphasizing the value of empathy-driven leadership. The Book That Shaped Dan's Leadership Approach “The DORA metrics help us measure what really matters for technical health.” Dan highlights the book Accelerate by Nicole Forsgren et al., which introduced him to the DORA (DevOps Research and Assessment) metrics. These metrics help organizations measure software delivery performance and technical health, offering a data-driven approach to evaluate progress and identify improvement areas. About Dan Hollinger Dan Hollinger is a proven engineering leader who champions empowerment through support, empathy, and transparency. He fosters a culture of trust, prioritizing alignment over dictation. Technically adept, Dan advocates for automatable solutions and a blameless environment, ensuring his team thrives both personally and professionally in a collaborative space. Feature management isn't a new idea but lately it's a trend that's picked up speed. Analysts like Forrester and Gartner have cited adoption of the practice as being, respectively, “hot” and “the dominant approach to experimentation in software engineering.” A study released in November found that 60% of 1,000 software and IT professionals surveyed started using feature flags only in the past year, according to the report sponsored by LaunchDarkly, the feature management platform and conducted by Wakefield Research. At the heart of feature management are feature flags, which give organizations the ability to turn features on and off, without having to re-deploy an entire app. Feature flags allow organizations test new features, and control things like access to premium versions of a customer-facing service. An overall feature management practice that includes feature flags allows organizations “to release progressively any new feature to any segment of users, any environment, any cohort of customers in a controlled manner that really reduces the risk of each release,” said Ravi Tharisayi, senior director of product marketing at LaunchDarkly, in this episode of The New Stack Makers podcast. Tharisayi talked to The New Stack's features editor, Heather Joslyn, about the future of feature management, on the eve of the company's latest Trajectory user conference. This episode of Makers was sponsored by LaunchDarkly.Streamlining Management, Saving MoneyThe participants in the new survey worked at companies of at least 200 employees, and nearly all of them that use feature flags — 98%— said they believe they save their organizations money and demonstrate a return on investment. Furthermore, 70% said that their company views feature management as either a mission-critical or a high-priority investment. Fielding the annual survey, Tharisayi said, has offered a window into how organizations are using feature flags. Fifty-five percent of customers in the 2022 survey said they use feature flags as long-term operational controls — for API rate limiting, for instance, to prioritize certain API calls in high-traffic situations. The second most common use, the survey found — cited by 47% of users — was for entitlements, “managing access to different types of plans, premium plans versus other plans, for example,” Tharisayi said. “This is really a powerful capability because of this ability to allow product managers or other personas to manage who has access to certain features to certain plans, without having to have developers be involved,” he said. “Previously, that required a lot of developer involvement.”Experimentation, Metrics, Cultural ShiftsLaunchDarkly, Tharisayi said, has been investing in and improving its platform's experimentation and measurement capabilities: “At the core of that is this notion that experimentation can be a lot more successful when it's tightly integrated to the developer workflow.” As an example, he pointed to CCP Games, makers of the gaming platform EVE Online, which serves millions of players. “They were recently thinking through how to evolve their recommendation engine, because they wanted this engine to recommend actions for their gamers that will hopefully increase their ultimate North Star metric,” its tracking of how much time gamers spend with their games. By using LaunchDarkly's platform, CCP was able to run A/B tests and increase gamers' session lengths and engagement. ”So that's the kind of capability that we think is going to be an increasing priority,” Tharisayi said. As feature management matures and standardizes, he said, he pointed to the adoption of DevOps as a model and cautionary tale. ”When it comes to cultural shifts, like DevOps or feature management that require teams to work in a different way, oftentimes there can be early success with a small team,” Tharisayi said “But then there can be some cultural and process barriers as you're trying to standardize to the team level and multi-team level, before figuring out the kinks in deploying it at an organization-wide level.” He added, “that's one of the trends that we observed a little bit in this survey, is that there are some cultural elements to getting success at scale, with something like feature management and the opportunity as an industry to support organizations as they're making that quest to standardize a practice like this, like any other cultural practice.” Check out the full episode for more on the survey and on what's next for feature management.
Why are teams and understanding the people within those teams so important? How do you build successful teams and how do you keep individuals within global teams engaged? In this episode, SHL's Andrew Geake discusses the importance of organizational teams and people data with Gunnar Haugen, Talent Management Director at CCP Games, who rely on their international teams to work effectively and in harmony to develop innovative games.
Eve Online (stylised EVE Online) is a space-based, persistent world massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by CCP Games. Players of Eve Online can participate in a number of in-game professions and activities, including mining, piracy, manufacturing, trading, exploration, and combat (both player versus environment and player versus player). The game contains a total of 7,800 star systems that can be visited by players. In 2009, a player alliance known as Goonswarm was contacted by a disgruntled director of rival alliance Band of Brothers, one of the largest alliances in the game at that time. The defecting director then stripped Band of Brothers of a large quantity of assets including ships, money and territory, and disbanded the alliance. Our theme song was written and performed by Anna Bosnick. If you'd like to support the show on a per episode basis, you can find our Patreon page here. Be sure to check our website for more details.
