Like most people who were alive in 1986, filmmaker Steven Leckart remembers the Challenger disaster. He was a kid in elementary school at the time. But as an adult, Leckart set out to explore the aftermath of what happened through interviews with astronauts' family members, engineers and NASA officials. Today, Leckart joins Lindsay to talk about the 2020 Netflix series, Challenger: The Final Flight, which he co-directed and produced.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! We're back! In the Season 6 premiere episode Alex looks at the extraordinary life of Akron, Ohio native NASA astronaut, Judy Resnik. We analyze the causes behind her tragic death in the Challenger Disaster on Jan. 28, 1986. On this 35th anniversary we take a fresh look at Judy's career and NASA's role in the loss of Challenger. Our guests include Helene Norin, Judy's cousin to discuss the Resnik family, Judy's youth in Akron and her journey to becoming the 2nd American female astronaut in space. Steven Leckart joins the show to talk about his excellent Netflix documentary, Challenger: The Final Flight. The 2020 documentary brings the Challenger crew and the controversy surrounding its final flight to millions of viewers. Lastly, we sat down with author and Columbia University professor Dr. Diane Vaughan to debunk some of the myths surrounding Challenger and her 1996 book Challenger Launch Decision. Click here to buy her award-winning book. https://www.amazon.com/Challenger-Launch-Decision-Technology-Deviance/dp/0226851761 This episode is in honor of Judy Resnik and Allan McDonald who passed away before we could complete our interview earlier this year. Allan was the "whistleblower" when it comes to the Challenger Disaster. We play some of Allan's testimony to the Rogers Commission following the accident and discuss his role in exposing the cover-up by some NASA administrators. In this episode, we welcome author and podcaster, Tom Taylor. Tom helped to create the Indiana Jones Minute and the Caddyshack Minute and has since been part of several additional shows. An editor of school textbooks by day, Tom puts his creative energies to work discussing the movies and music he loves. His first successful youth novel, "In Memory of Todd Woods," has been out for a few years. He is in the midst of shopping his newest book, "The Nearly Useless Power League," to see if he can find a publisher. While on a bit of a hiatus from their fourth season, discussing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull he has joined with three others for a new show. It's called ABCD:TOS, where they are going through all of the original star trek episodes in alphabetical order. MOVIES/STREAMING: Walt really enjoyed the documentary, Challenger: The Final Flight, on Netflix. He has also been re-watching some of the Bond movies recently available to stream, including Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. He also caught American Assassin on Netflix and thought it was okay, but not great. Finally, he has been binging The Simpsons on Disney+. Tom has been introducing his 13 year old son to The Simpsons, 30 Rock and Parks and Rec. When the children are safely tucked in bed, he and his wife are enjoying Lovecraft Country, Perry Mason and Insecure, all on HBO Max. Alan was back in the movie theater, this time to see a new film, Tenet. He could not praise the latest Christopher Nolan movie highly enough. In his words, even the soundtrack was a character in the film that was built around the concept of the palindrome. READING: Walt is awaiting the new Jerry Seinfeld book, "Is That Something?" Tom is doing his homework for an upcoming episode of ABCD:TOS. He is reading the original concept work and script for, "City on the Edge of Forever," by Harlan Ellison. LISTENING: Walt started a new podcast called, In Research Of, which looks at the old television show, "In Search Of," hosted by Leonard Nimoy. Reality-TV vet Andy Dehnart has seen a LOT of unscripted crap in his decades in the field, so we're glad he brought his expertise to our discussion of this unprecedented time in the genre's history: the home-shot, socially-distanced versions/spin-offs of some of our old "favorites," plus some new DIY unscripted stuff tailored to pandemic "set" safety. We talked about the challenges facing reality competitions in the Zoom-show era, then drilled down on a few specific shows like Dr. Pimple Popper: Before The Pop, Ghosted: Love Gone Missing, Design At Your Door, and Amy Schumer Learns To Cook. What works for these shows and what doesn't? What innovations -- or filler-busters -- should they keep when quarantine's over? Later, we went Around The Dial with Challenger: The Final Flight, Get Organized With The Home Edit, 16 And Recovering, and The Great Pottery Throw Down, and Tara shared a Tiny Tessitoriumph. We petitioned a reality-competition court to overthrow legendary injustices in the day's Extra Credit, and Andy argued to OUR jury that the first-season Survivor finale acquitted itself well enough to join the Canon. Sam Elliott won, the English language lost, and every night is Saturday night at Game Time. Set up that ring light: it's an all-new Extra Hot Great. GUESTS
