In this eye-opening documentary, BRAINWASHED: SEX-CAMERA-POWER, celebrated independent filmmaker Nina Menkes explores the sexual politics of cinematic shot design. Using clips from hundreds of movies we all know and love – from METROPOLIS to VERTIGO to PHANTOM THREAD – Menkes convincingly makes the argument that shot design is gendered. BRAINWASHED: SEX-CAMERA-POWER illuminates the patriarchal narrative codes that hide within supposedly “classic” set-ups and camera angles, and demonstrates how women are frequently displayed as objects for the use, support, and pleasure of male subjects. Building on the essential work of Laura Mulvey and other feminist writers, Menkes shows how these not-so-subtle embedded messages affect and intersect with the twin epidemics of sexual abuse and assault, as well as employment discrimination against women, especially in the film industry. The film features interviews with an all-star cast of women and non-binary industry professionals including Julie Dash, Penelope Spheeris, Charlyne Yi, Joey Soloway, Catherine Hardwicke, Eliza Hittman, and Rosanna Arquette. Director Nina Menkes joins us for a conversation on how and why she crafted BRAINWASHED to be seen as a call-to-action that can fundamentally change the way you see, and watch, movies. sent $$$ this week to Save the Omni Commons.omnicommons.org / gf.me/u/ykrbkt“Four years ago, the collectives that make up the Omni Commons obtained a loan to purchase the building at 4799 Shattuck Avenue in North Oakland. Since then, we have offered event space to the wider community and workspace to collectives on a sliding-scale basis. The Shelter-in-Place order issued in mid-March in response to the pandemic, as well as subsequent restrictions, have prohibited the gatherings that rent our event space and provide half of the income to make our monthly loan payments and keep the Omni Commons open.We have been able to keep the building open for the essential services that some of our collectives provide to the community. Additionally, we collaborated in forming the North Oakland Mutual Aid Drive together with other community organizations. The Omni has become a local distribution site for the curbside and low-income communities, disproportionately people of color, in North Oakland. We’re using our ballroom and entrance hall to gather canned food, water, masks, hand sanitizer and other items, and then distribute these items to those who need them. While the Omni Commons continues to keep the building open for our collectives to offer essential services, we now face a big challenge. In the midst of pandemic restrictions limiting our income, we must refinance the original five-year loan on the building by May 1, 2021. We’re working hard to save enough money to show lenders that we are able to make loan payments until restrictions are lifted and it’s safe to open up event rentals again. So, we’re asking you, our friends and supporters, to make a generous contribution to our GoFundMe campaign to Save the Omni Commons. If you want to watch Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich please consider renting or purchasing the movie through this amazon link to help us support the podcast. Synopsis of Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich is a reboot of one of the most popular cult classic horror franchises in the past 30 years, and it’s fun for all the right reasons. It is irreverent, funny, fun, completely gratuitous and extremely violent. If you are new to the series, it doesn’t do a fabulous job of introducing you to the puppets, but it does a great job of explaining the premise of the puppet master, Andre Toulon, played by Udo Kier. Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich has enough familiar faces to make you feel at home, and the cast you (probably) don’t recognize do a wonderful job of giving admirable performances. Thomas Lennon (Lt. Dangle from Reno 911) plays Edgar, the main antagonist who is a recent divorcee and comic book creator who has fallen on tough times and is living with his parents until he can sort his life out. Nelson Franklin plays Markowitz, Edgar's buddy and employer at a local comic shop, provides most of the comedic relief throughout the movie. Jenny Pellicer plays Ashley, Edgar’s new girlfriend. Edgar finds a puppet in his parent’s house and quickly realizes that it was created by the infamous Andre Toulon, a Nazi who also happened to be a skilled puppet maker. He finds out that there is going to be an auction of Andre’s puppets and decides he could use the money, so he takes a trip to the hotel where the auction is taking place. Coincidentally this hotel is near to the puppet master’s residence, and the gathering of puppet collectors in this hotel is the perfect place for the second Holocaust. Horror movie veteran Barbara Crampton, who also starred in Dead Night, is a retired cop who introduces us to the history behind the puppet master, you will also probably recognize Charlyne Yi, who plays Nerissa, a hotel restaurant employee who has a decent role. My Rating 7/10 Spoilers I saw seven boobs in Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich. That sentence tells you more than you need to know to evaluate whether or not this movie is for you. It is completely inappropriate, and that’s what makes it fun. Nazi puppets who are bent on killing Jews, blacks and homosexuals are the antagonists who provide extremely creative and gory deaths to anyone who gets in their way. Here is a list of completely insane deaths that took place in Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich: A Jewish couple was burned to death while mocking their puppet, calling it a Nazi souvenir that was meant to remind them of Hitler’s failed Reich.A pregnant woman suffered, what I will call, an abortion with extreme prejudice.A dude was decapitated while taking a leak and ended up urinating on his head in the toilet bowl. One young man was completely disemboweled while chatting with his mom on the phone. One guy had his back torn open, a tiny “Junior Fuhrer” climbed into him and controlled him as one would control a puppet. This puppet looks like a baby Adolf Hitler. This movie reminded me of something Mel Brooks said during an interview. "I said: Listen, get on a soapbox with Hitler, you're gonna lose — he was a great orator. However, if you can make fun of him, if you can have people laugh at him, you win." Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich takes everything sacred and rips it to shreds. If you are offended by anything, this will do a damn good job of finding what it is and trying to bother you, if not make you quite upset. If you can sit back and stop taking everything so seriously, suddenly all those things have no power over you anymore. I don’t want to get too far into a life lesson while writing a review about the 13th Puppet Master installment, but it’s as good a time as any to say, chill out and have fun. To be fair, this movie knew me way too well and might have scored a few extra points by havin...

Today's Guest: Charlyne Yi, actress, "House, M.D." Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of deaf senior citizens who thought I said “Knock-knock” instead of Knocked Up and are not so quietly telling each other jokes to which they can no longer remember the punchlines… in the NEW new media capital of the world, St. Petersburg, Florida! Order 'Paper Heart' starring Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi by clicking the DVD above! Charlyne Yi is a young woman whose name you may have heard in the past year or two, maybe as an actress in Knocked Up or Paper Heart, which she wrote, executive produced, composed music for and starred in with her then boyfriend, Michael Cera. If you watch a lot of YouTube videos, you may know her for her viral Saturday Night Live audition tape or her ongoing video exchanges with SNL star Fred Armisen—and I’ll play a sample of both later. CHARLENE YI podcast excerpt: “Everyone’s aware that there are things that need to be fixed but we’re immune to it. When I went to the Hunger Banquet, it’s hard to ignore how you’re affected when someone tells you 1 billion people are chronically hungry.” Order 'House, M.D.: Season Eight' starring Charlyne Yi and some smartass British guy, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the DVD cover above! But the real reason Charlyne is joining me today is talk about her commitment to Oxfam America Hunger Banquet. She did a video for the nonprofit organization that is also viral. It’s a largely wordless demonstration of how she went from not knowing about hunger in America to taking an active stand against it. And, of course, we’ll also talk about movies. And maybe we can get her to sing a little bit, because among her many videos are those in which she sings and plays guitar, including a cover of Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which, of course, was written by Prince. Oh the Moon (Harper Perennial)From actress, comedian, musician, and writer Charlyne Yi comes this collection of illustrated, interconnected short stories and anecdotes that blends comedy, fantastic adventures, and a storm of feelings that will make you want to laugh and cry at the same time reminiscent of the works of Demetri Martin, Shel Silverstein and John Cassavetes.Charlyne Yi takes readers from the beginning of time to the depths of a frog's stomach, and to Hell and back literally in this collection of short stories that showcases her unique style.Equal parts whimsical, hilarious, heartbreaking, and terrifying, these short stories both written and illustrated by Charlyne can be read separately, but are connected thematically following the difficulties of love at every age: Forgive Me: What happens when the tiniest boy of all time is the only thing standing between the world s largest baby and an angry mob? Who could ever love something so small? Or so big? The Particles: A love story that takes all the time in the universe to tell. She's All Legs: In this spicy, action-packed romance, Agatha, a woman who is literally just legs and a head, decides to hunt down and kill the Devil himself. Math, Heaven, Time (Eyewear Publishing)  Join us for a very special evening as Mandy Kahn reads from her debut collection of poetry, featuring soloist Becky Stark and The ∞ Angeles Ladies' Choir performing new collaborative works that feature poetry, solo voice and a chorus. Math, Heaven, Time is the lush, lyric and unabashedly beautiful debut from poet Mandy Kahn. A teeming corridor where characters from a Noel Coward play tire of eating oysters, where Alfred Stieglitz ruminates on Georgia O'Keeffe's hands, where a rooster crows for dawn all day, and where the consideration of simple things - common wheat, a renovated loft, couples that argue on reality TV - rises to the level of exhalation, of prayer.  Mandy Kahn is coauthor (with Aaron Rose) of the nonfiction book Collage Culture: Examining the 21st Century's Identity Crisis (JRP/Ringier), which was also released as a record with a score by No Age. She has collaborated with many composers to create works that feature poetry in tandem with classical music, and has had readings and signings at Colette (Paris), Motto (Berlin), Shoreditch House (London), Davies Symphony Hall (San Francisco), Printed Matter (New York), and Art Center College of Design (Los Angeles).  Becky Stark was described by the NY Times as “Lucille Ball and Tinkerbell engaged in a duet.” She is the voice of the band Lavender Diamond and is a member of the harmony group The Living Sisters. She is the founder of the community healing project the LA Ladies Choir and is also the director of the LA River Choir, a public ecological healing force. She joined the Decemberists on their album “Hazards of Love” to sing the role of Margaret. Alongside comedian & musician Charlyne Yi she is a one half of the musical comedy group called Courage. She sings with John C. Reilly in the musical variety band John Reilly & Friends. She studied comparative literature at Brown University.
