The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in the historic case which will determine whether Donald John can be removed from the ballot in Colorado after Colorado's Supreme Court ruled that the former president would be banned from the presidential primary ballot in the state, citing Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution: “No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments on whether Colorado's Supreme Court erred in ruling that former President Donald Trump could be disqualified as a candidate for the presidential primaries in the state under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, also known as the ‘Insurrection Clause.' The case is one of the most consequential election cases in U.S. history. The Senate is making a last-ditch effort Thursday to approve funding for Ukraine and Israel. That follows the collapse of a bipartisan agreement to tie border policies to the package earlier this week. If the funding package passes in the Senate, it will still be on a collision course with the House, where many Republicans oppose sending further aid to Ukraine. For this episode of Trump's Trials, NPR's Steve Inskeep speaks with historians Jill Lepore and David Blight. Lepore and Blight have submitted a friend of the court brief to the Supreme Court ahead of oral arguments on whether former President Donald Trump should remain on the Colorado ballot. Colorado's Supreme Court said Trump is not qualified for the presidency under the Constitution's 14th Amendment. Section 3 of that amendment says you can't serve in federal office if you once took an oath to support the United States and then engaged in an insurrection or rebellion. Both Lepore and Blight argue that Section three of the 14th amendment disqualifies Trump from serving again as president.Topics include:- Historical context of the 14th amendment - Historical intention of section three - What does it mean to have 'engaged in insurrection'- Interpreting the Constitution Follow the show on Apple Podcasts or Spotify for new episodes each Saturday.Sign up for sponsor-free episodes and support NPR's political journalism at plus.npr.org/trumpstrials.Email the show at trumpstrials@npr.org.

It's Wednesday, January 10th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Biden failed to include India and Nigeria on naughty list The U.S. State Department released its annual report on religious freedom violators last Thursday.  The report listed Countries of Particular Concern which included Myanmar, China, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.  However, religious freedom groups are criticizing the Biden administration for not including India and Nigeria on the list. McKenna Wendt with International Christian Concern said, “During the Christmas season, hundreds of Christians were slaughtered in Nigeria. And in India, anti-conversion laws, mob violence, and extremist ideology continues to suppress the Christian community. ICC stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Nigeria and India, and we call on the U.S. State Department to hold these governments accountable.” Hebrews 13:3 says, “Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.” World economy slowing again The World Bank announced it expects global economic growth to slow in 2024 for a third year in a row. The institution projects the economy worldwide will grow by 2.4 percent this year. That's down from 2.6 percent last year, 3 percent in 2022, and 6.2 percent in 2021. The economic stagnation will hit developing countries the hardest in the wake of the pandemic era.  The World Bank also projected slower economic growth for the United States at 1.6 percent this year, down from 2.5 percent last year. America's $34 trillion of debt Speaking of the U.S. economy, the federal government's total debt crossed $34 trillion for the first time at the end of 2023. The new record comes just three months after the government crossed the $33 trillion threshold. Federal deficit spending has surged under recent administrations, both Democrat and Republican. Over the last year, credit rating agencies have downgraded their outlook on the government's credit standing. Proverbs 22:7 says, “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.” Apple vs. the Bible The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ruled that Apple Inc. cannot exclude a free speech resolution from its 2024 annual meeting. The American Family Association put forward the resolution over concerns that the tech company is “limiting content access within its online services based on viewpoint and that it does so based on vague and subjective terms of use.” Apple has used its vague guidelines to ban content that promotes Biblical views on marriage and sexuality.  Jeremy Tedesco with Alliance Defending Freedom said, “Major corporations like Apple shouldn't be hiding from shareholders who are concerned about the company's impact on free speech.” U.S. Supreme Court hears Trump Colorado ballot case Last Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a case over Colorado's removal of Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot. Last month, Colorado's Supreme Court ruled that the former president was disqualified from the office based on the insurrection clause in the Constitution's 14th Amendment in Section 3. Trump appealed the decision. The U.S. Supreme Court said it would fast-track the case with oral arguments scheduled for February 8th. Trump is also appealing a similar decision in Maine to keep him off the ballot there. Will Missouri remove Biden from ballot? Meanwhile, in Missouri, a state official has indicated he may try to remove President Joe Biden from the ballot. Last Friday, Missouri's Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft  spoke out on X.  He tweeted, “What has happened in Colorado & Maine is disgraceful & undermines our republic. While I expect the Supreme Court to overturn this, if not, Secretaries of State will step in & ensure the new legal standard for @realDonaldTrump applies equally to @JoeBiden!” Ashcroft also told NBC News, “If Democrat states are saying we're not going to let these Republicans run, you bet you're going to see the same thing happening from Republican states.” Pro-abortion Arkansas constitutional amendment doesn't make cut And finally, a pro-abortion constitutional amendment has failed again to make it onto the ballot in Arkansas.  The state's Republican Attorney General Tim Griffin already rejected another version of the amendment last year. The measure would have allowed the killing of unborn babies in certain cases. Griffin wrote that the amendment included language that was unclear and could mislead voters. Arkansas currently bans abortion in almost all cases.  Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, January 10th in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. It's Thursday, December 28th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Muslim Nigerian terrorists continue to target Christians As we reported yesterday, armed Muslim groups killed dozens of people in Nigeria's central Plateau State over the weekend. The death toll has risen to nearly 200 now in the predominantly Christian area. The attacks started on Christmas Eve and continued through yesterday. Terrorists killed church pastors and destroyed hundreds of homes. A local resident told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News, “These terrorists who attacked these Christian communities were in the hundreds, and they carried out the attacks as the hapless Christians were preparing for Christmas programs lined up by their pastors.” Church leaders in Nigeria believe Muslim herdsmen are targeting Christians for their land and to impose Islam. Psalm 37:1-3 reminds us, “Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.” European Union limits migration The European Union reached an historic deal last Wednesday to limit migration into the 27-country bloc. The deal still needs to be ratified and comes ahead of EU elections next year. Polls indicate a rise in support for conservative, anti-immigration parties. Under the agreement, European countries at the E.U. border will have a stricter asylum process and more power to deport migrants. Immigration to the E.U. is down from its high in 2015 of over one million people, but has been steadily increasing since the pandemic era. British teacher in trouble for opposing perversion The United Kingdom's Teaching Regulation Agency recently ruled a Christian teacher was guilty of “unacceptable professional conduct” for opposing sexually perverted lifestyles.  The ruling comes after a Church of England school fired Glawdys Leger for refusing to teach the schools homosexual and transgender lessons. Leger said she was relieved that the Teaching Regulation Agency did not ban her from the profession, but she warned, “The message from the TRA is that Christian teachers must not only be silent about their beliefs, but they must actively promote LGBT ideology or risk being severely punished and even losing their careers.” Trump remains on Michigan ballot In the U.S., Michigan's Supreme Court ruled yesterday that former President Donald Trump can remain on the state's 2024 ballot. This contrasts with a ruling from Colorado's Supreme Court last week that said Trump is disqualified from holding the office of president. It was the first time a court has disqualified a presidential candidate based on the insurrection clause in the Constitution's 14th Amendment. Michigan and Colorado have come down on opposite sides of an issue that is likely to head to the U.S. Supreme Court. Trump is facing ballot challenges in over a dozen states. Only 34 abortions in Texas in almost 9 months New data from Texas Health and Human Services shows 34 abortions were reported in the state between January 1 and September 15 of this year. That's down from over 20,000 abortions last year and over 50,000 abortions in 2021. Texas has increased its abortion restrictions since last year when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The abortion rate has dropped across states with abortion bans since the ruling. However, medication abortion, specifically the Abortion Kill Pill, is expanding. Fifty-three percent of mothers who choose to abort, abort chemically.  Before the ruling, it was already the most frequent form of abortion. 51,000 people trusted Christ through Fellowship of Christian Athletes And finally, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes reports their ministry this year saw over 51,000 people turn to Christ. FCA President and CEO Shane Williamson told The Christian Post, “The best gift we can give and receive at Christmas is the gift of Christ, who came to Earth to save us and offer us all the free gift of salvation.” This year marks 69 years for the ministry as it continues its mission to lead coaches and athletes into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church.  FCA now works in 115 countries. They also distributed over 230,000 Bibles this year, bring Bible distributions to three million over the last 15 years. Throughout the year, FCA staff have encouraged coaches and athletes to experience the reality that ‘the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world' (1 John 4:4).  Indeed, Jesus is greater! This week on Rational Security, Quinta and Scott were joined by Lawfare Executive Editor Natalie Orpett and Cyber Fellow Eugenia Lostri to talk through the big national security news waking us up from our long winter's nap this week, including:“Rocky Mountain, Bye.” Colorado's Supreme Court has bid goodbye to former President Donald Trump's 2024 candidacy (for now, at least), holding in a 4-3 ruling that he is disqualified as a candidate by virtue of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Will this ruling hold? And where will it go from here?“Houthis to Sea, so Rudely, a Wop Bop a Loo Bop a Wop Bam Boom.” Attacks by Yemen-based (and Iran-backed) Houthi rebels have led major shippers to avoid the Red Sea, dealing a serious blow to global commerce. But the United States and a coalition of allies has announced a new maritime effort—the (perhaps too) aptly named Operation Prosperity Guardian—to keep trade flowing. What will this military operation look like? And what will it mean for the global economy?“Not So Bueno(s) Aires?” Argentina has a new president in the form of eccentric populist economist and literal dogfather Javier Milei. What does his election mean for the future of the country? Festivus, the holiday created by the folks on the Seinfeld TV show, is this Saturday: the TV-official day for the airing of grievances. For Donald Trump, every day is a day for the airing of grievances — and this week he had plenty of opportunity: Colorado's Supreme Court threw him off that state's ballot … for now Nearly a quarter of Trump voters say he shouldn't be the nominee if he's convicted of a felony, but another one-third want a president willing to break rules and the law if that gets the job done Trump's erstwhile attorney Rudy Giuliani files for bankruptcy after a defamation judgment that could next challenge Trump His racist statements about immigrants poisoning America ignite fires (a puzzling statement who's married not one, but two immigrants!). Also this week: Attorney General Dana Nessel has filed felony charges against state House Speaker Lee Chatfield. We'll talk with one of the reporters covering the story, Clara Hendrickson of the Detroit Free Press The Colorado decision on Trump gives more support to the case now in front of Michigan's Supreme Court to do the same in our state And a new tally of spending on roads says Governor Whitmer has put $2-billion into her promise to “fix the damn roads” during 2023. And even as we were recording the podcast, more breaking news: a federal Court of Appeals has thrown out parts of Michigan citizen-drawn legislative districts. What You Need to Know is Colorado's Supreme Court has taken Trump off of the state ballot, arguing that because he supposedly incited an insurrection, he is disqualified from assuming the Presidency. The degradation of our legal system has reached not just a new low, but a totally different point in which there are not enough people in the legal profession who are going to stop bad legal decisions like this one when they come about. Robert Bortins is the CEO of Classical Conversations, the classical Christian homeschool learning curriculum. Robert joins Ed to discuss some of the great things about homeschooling. Robert highlights the flexibility of homeschooling and how it can allow students to get ahead in life, as well as the many opportunities for thinking outside the box. Ed and Robert also talk about the Marxists at the universities and the ways that their ideas spread. Stephen Willeford, author of A Town Called Sutherland Springs and gun rights spokesman at Gunowners.org, joins Ed to discuss recent gun legislation in the state of Illinois and the ongoing legal battle against their new gun restrictions. Stephen details how their case is being impacted by judges who received campaign contributions from the anti-gun lobby. Colorado's Supreme Court has become a partisan embarrassment to the state. It has been notorious for years for harassing Christian bakers who, for example, refused to bake cakes celebrating gay weddings. Now, it thinks it should usurp voters' right to choose their president. It was sternly rebuked by the United States Supreme Court for its persecution of the cake-makers, and it deserves to be rebuked again for the flagrantly partisan decision it just handed down about the forthcoming presidential election. Recent initiatives from Democrats to strengthen their policies and weaken the GOP could yield unintended consequences and further divide the two major parties. Jack Smith's appointment as special counsel is unconstitutional and so the Supreme Court must reject his petition against Donald Trump, lawyers representing former Attorney General Ed Meese and two top constitutional scholars in the country argued in a brief filed on Wednesday.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, Quinta and Scott were joined by Lawfare Executive Editor Natalie Orpett and Cyber Fellow Eugenia Lostri to talk through the big national security news waking us up from our long winter's nap this week, including:“Rocky Mountain, Bye.” Colorado's Supreme Court has bid goodbye to former President Donald Trump's 2024 candidacy (for now, at least), holding in a 4-3 ruling that he is disqualified as a candidate by virtue of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. We have a live dispatch from Buenos Aires to talk it over. For object lessons, Quinta recommended Jennifer Egan's 2022 classic “A Visit From the Goon Squad” and her latest “The Candy House.” Scott shared his preferred recipe for mulled wine and the secret ingredient: star anise. Natalie shared a wealth of new materials celebrating civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, including a new film Rustin, as well as a recent profile in The New Yorker. And Eugenia gave the people what they want with her endorsement of the Dragon Age series of games. We've pushed back the recording of our annual end-of-year listener-submitted episode, so you have until December 23 to send in whatever topics and object lessons you want us to discuss! Former President Donald Trump has responded to the recent ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court on the potential disqualification of his run in the 2024 election due to the 14th Amendment 'insurrectionist ban'. Trump expressed his thoughts on his social media platform, Truth Social, dubbing the ruling an unfortunate mark on the history of our nation. The contentious ruling from Colorado's Supreme Court featured a closely split panel, with a final vote at 4-3. Currently, the ruling is on pause until January 4th, which falls a day before the closure of the period for finalizing the candidate list for the GOP primary, as reported by CNN. Trump has taken this opportunity to not only voice his disappointment but also turn it into a fundraising moment. He has described the so-called ban to be a clear misstep and an indicator of a downward spiral for the American state in his public messages on Truth Social. Trump's posts encapsulate his strong sentiments over the situation. With his characteristic directness, he posted 'WHAT A SHAME FOR OUR COUNTRY!!!', clearly indicating his views on the ruling. This was followed by another post that read 'A SAD DAY IN AMERICA!!!', echoing his previous sentiment.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Donald John's legal team says he never swore to "support the Constitution" in response to an attempt to have him thrown off the presidential ballot in Colorado in 2024.  Colorado's Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal on a lawsuit filed by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a watchdog group arguing that Donald John's actions on January 6, 2021 violated Section Three of the 14th Amendment and he should be prohibited from running for president again.
