On July 19, 1963, at least 15 Black girls were arrested while marching to protest segregation in Americus, Georgia. After spending a night in jail, they were transferred to the one-room Leesburg Stockade and imprisoned for the next 45 days.Only twenty miles away, the girls' parents had no knowledge of their location. A month into their confinement, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) heard rumors of the girls' detention and sent photographer Danny Lyon, who took pictures of them through barred windows. Within days, these photographs appeared in publications around the country. As the girls' ordeal gained national attention, they were released without charges. This is the story of the 'Stolen Girls.' *****To see more photos by Danny Lyon, visit bleakbeauty.com and Instagram. Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

“You're reading these interviews [in the book The Bikeriders by Danny Lyon] and they're all interesting, but Kathy's are just fascinating. You could just tell she was a character, meaning she was just this interesting, dynamic person, a person that was trying to figure out how she found herself in this world because she really talks about walking into this bar and meeting this charismatic young bike rider. And so, it was a really beneficial crutch for me to kind of get into this world. And then before you know it, by the middle of the script, I'm writing words for Kathy that never existed. It didn't hurt that, in my research, I reached out to Danny and he turned over hours and hours of recordings. I would drive around town just listening to Kathy talk. I mean, I had this woman in my head and I felt pretty confident midway through the script that I could write in her voice. It just gave this perspective to a very masculine, aggressive subculture. It gave this feminine point of view, but to me it was just a really interesting point of view,” says writer/director Jeff Nichols about writing the character Kathy, played by Jodie Comer, in his film The Bikeriders.  In this episode of the podcast, we speak to Jeff Nichols about his departure from Southern Gothic storytelling and going deep into the world of a 1960s motorcycle club for The Bikeriders, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hardy. We also discuss some of his other films like Loving, Take Shelter and Mud, starring Matthew McConaughey – a film Nichols thought would never get released.  “I thought Mud was a failure. We had taken Mud to the Cannes Film Festival, and although we had a really nice reception there, you know, standing ovations and whatnot – no one bought the film. And we went an entire year with no one buying that film. In fact, no one ever did buy that film. The financier put up half the money to market and distribute that film and luckily, Roadside Attractions came in and put up the other half and then it became the film that everybody knows,” says Nichols.  To hear more about Nichols's writing process, and his advice for building stories around “emotional impact,” listen to the podcast.

Send us a Text Message. The Bikeriders Tour is an annual adventure that sees Lucero lead singer Ben Nichols and his longtime friend, tattoo artist Oliver Peck, hitting the open road to combine their passions for motorcycles, music, and tattoos. This unique tour allows them to travel around the country, with each day filled with tattooing and each night devoted to acoustic solo performances by Ben.The origins of the Bikeriders Tour date back to 2011, when Ben Nichols embarked on the first tour alone, riding his trusty ‘07 BMW R1200GS. Inspired by his love for both motorcycles and music, Ben decided to merge these interests into a distinctive tour experience. The following year, Oliver Peck, along with a few other tattoo artists, joined Ben on their Harleys, turning the tour into an annual tradition that blends artistry, camaraderie, and the open road. Each year, they carve out a week or two to embark on this journey, creating memorable experiences along the way.During the tour, Oliver Peck spends his days tattooing at local shops in each city they visit. His expertise and reputation as a top-tier tattoo artist draw in crowds eager to get inked by him. In the evenings, Ben Nichols takes the stage at nearby venues, delivering intimate acoustic solo shows that captivate audiences with his soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics. Oliver, serving as the host and MC, adds a layer of camaraderie and entertainment, making each night a unique experience for attendees. This year, the tour welcomes renowned Cleveland tattoo artist Greg Christian, adding even more talent and excitement to the lineup. With Christian's participation, the tour continues to evolve, offering fans and attendees an even richer experience. The Bikeriders Tour is not just about music and tattoos; it's also about giving back. Sponsors like Simpson Motorcycle Helmets and White Knuckler Brand knives have generously donated helmets and handmade knives for nightly raffles. The proceeds from these raffles are donated to American Core, a nonprofit organization dedicated to veterans' mental health. This philanthropic aspect adds a meaningful dimension to the tour, allowing fans to contribute to a worthy cause. The tour's name, Bikeriders, is derived from a Lucero song inspired by Danny Lyon's famous book of photographs from the 1960s. The book's vivid depiction of motorcycle culture inspired Ben to write the song, which in turn inspired the tour. Despite the years and miles, Ben still rides the same BMW R1200GS he started the tour with in 2011, symbolizing the enduring spirit and continuity of this unique journey. With its blend of music, motorcycles, tattoos, and good times, the Bikeriders Tour is a celebration of passion, friendship, and www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group.

The Bikeriders is another triumph for Little Rock-born filmmaker Jeff Nichols. Inspired by and named after a 1968 photographic study of Chicago bikers by Danny Lyon, the film charts the rise and fall of not just a motorcycle gang but also an era in American history. It stars Austin Butler as young rebel Benny, Jodie Comer as his long-suffering partner Kathy, Mike Faist as Lyon and Tom Hardy as gang founder Johnny – and that's just scratching the surface of a brilliant ensemble cast. At first glance, the drama seems like a departure for Jeff, known for movies like sci-fi adventure Midnight Special and apocalyptic drama Take Shelter. Peer a little closer at his screenplay, however and you soon start to see familiar Nichols-isms. For starters, there's a “rurality” to Jeff's work too, with so many of his stories unfolding down down dusty dirt trails, in parts of America that Hollywood doesn't often turn its cameras towards. Then there's the themes of masculinity, finality and devotion that simmer beneath the surface of all his movies, and rear their heads again here.In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, we get into those recurring threads across his work, the post-Vietnam context for the film's final act, the influence of Scorsese's Goodfellas on the first act's structure and the modern male malaise that this film comments on. Be sure to watch the film before tuning in.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. While still a student at the University of Chicago, he was imprisoned in the South and became the first photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). His photographs formed the core of the book "The Movement."   Gloria Richardson, Stokely Carmichael, and Cleve Sellers in custody in Cambridge, Maryland, 1964. The two years he spent with the club resulted in the publication of a groundbreaking book, "The Bikeriders" which inspired a new film. Are you familiar with the book “THE BIKERIDERS” by Danny Lyon? Well recently it was adapted to a screen play by director Jeff Nichols not to be confused with today's guest Jeff Milburn. The photos in the book were taken in the late 60's so obviously the bikes in the book were from the late 60's. You might ask yourself, “what's the process like getting a bunch panheads and knuckleheads on the big screen?” I guarantee it wasn't easy, but lets hear it from the man that was there every step of the way, from curating the bikes to teaching actors how to operate a foot clutch, hand shift, points timed, linkert aspirated breathing fire machine, the man the myth the legend Jeff Milburn.Previous Jeff Milburn PodcastDanger Dan's Talk ShopMCshopTsLowbrow CustomsMotrcyleSherpa Permalink

Due to the ongoing strike by SAG-AFTRA, the release of Jeff Nichols' film The Bikeriders, featuring Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, and Killing Eve star Jodie Comer, has been delayed. Originally scheduled for a December release this year, New Regency Productions has decided to postpone it. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, there is still hope that the movie's release will be pushed for the awards season next year. The Bikeriders is based on the 1968 book of black-and-white photographs by Danny Lyon, which captures authentic biker portraits. The film immerses viewers in the lives of the Vandals, a fictional biker gang in 1965 Chicago, and the extended cast includes Michael Shannon, Boyd Holbrook, and Norman Reedus. The movie is a collaboration between Regency Enterprises, Tri-State Pictures, and 20th Century Studios, with Sarah Green, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Arnon Milchan as the producers

On July 19, 1963, 30 Black girls were arrested while marching to protest segregation in Americus, Georgia. After spending a night in jail, they were transferred to the one-room Lee County Stockade and imprisoned for the next 45 days. Only twenty miles away, the girls' parents had no knowledge of their location. A month into their confinement, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) heard rumors of the girls' detention and sent photographer Danny Lyon, who took pictures of them through barred windows. Within days, those photographs appeared in publications around the country. As the girls' ordeal gained national attention, they were released without charges. In the first half of the episode, Mack Scott, a visiting professor at Brown's Center for Slavery and Justice, talks with Dan Richards about the complex relationship between Rhode Island's Narragansett Nation and the state's Black communities in the 18th and 19th centuries. It's a vivid example of how America's history of anti-Black racism is deeply intertwined with the history of America's indigenous communities. In the second half, Watson Senior Fellow Geri Augusto talks about a project she's working on to uncover, preserve, and transmit the history of one of the Civil Rights movement's most important and unique organizations – the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Let’s Talk About Networking and Why It’s Not Working Out For You Success with networking starts with the right mindset, have you got the right attitude and skills to establish yourself in your community? Danny Lyon, a successful entrepreneur and networking expert, talks with Enlightened Entrepreneur Podcast host Yeukai Kajidori about the secrets to networking and some common mistakes every business owner needs to be aware of. Key Questions Asked What is involved in networking? What roadblocks did Dan face when getting started? How did Dan get his initial client and what are some of the lessons he’s learned from the people he was able to help over the last 18 years? How does Danny market his business or himself? What is the number one mistake people do when networking? Why is this mistake detrimental to anyone’s success when it comes to networking? What other major mistake does Dan see that business owners are doing which they can avoid? What is the right mindset for people who are going to business events?   Highlights of Lessons Learned: Key to Networking There is a high failure rate of small businesses and the reason for this is because they think that they know what they’re doing and they think that they have to do it by themselves. One of the great aspects of networking is the fact that you don’t know everything and that there are people out there everywhere that want to help you. Overcoming Roadblocks Biggest roadblocks most start-up’s use is either disbelief, non-awareness, or non-admittance that your business is exactly how you create it.  The moment you learn to take credit for both the good and the bad, you will position yourself as a leader, which other people will look up to.  Secret to Getting Clients Any business that is focused on money is set up for trouble. When a business is focused on extraordinary customer experience, it’s set up for success. Because it is the customer that has all the money. So just get off of money and get on to customers, the money comes by itself. Biggest Mistake in Networking The number one mistake people often commit when networking is, they think “It’s about me,” so when they come to a networking event or join a networking group, they’re focused on themselves what they are going to get. This is much like closing all the doors at once.  The best way to focus on the customer experience is to learn to be a giver first.  We like to think that we’re interesting people and the way that we think that were interesting is by telling other people how interesting we are, when in fact the more that we get interested in another person, the more interesting we can become as we get into their world. Another mistake people usually commit is that they are not open to trying new things.

Lyon reveals the secrets of the success "high-flyers", the "turnaround artists", the "comfort zone dwellers", and the "give-ups". No matter where you are in your life right now, Lyon sheds light on how you may be holding yourself back and what it takes to get out of your own way.  Next, we meet with Steve Barnett, author of Gumption - Taking Bubba Gump from Movie to Restaurant.  Written in a cinematic style, this book is about the creation, growth, and sale of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. The concept began when Paramount Pictures reached out to see if there was interest in creating a restaurant based on the movie Forrest Gump. It is also the personal story of the author’s growth as a CEO and creator of restaurant concepts. A host of situations are described such as restaurant concept creation, high stakes boardroom confrontations, and escaping corrupt officials in foreign lands. The narrative is partly an unvarnished peak behind the everyday scenes of restaurants, movie studios, and Wall Street. There is also an almost step-by-step recounting of how the Bubba Gump concept and others were created and operated. Lessons can be learned on unorthodox methods used in moving from traditional approaches to untried ways of doing business.

On this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we welcome two artists whose work blurs the lines between street photography, documentary, installation and digital art, while cultivating a contemporary interpretation of the art and craft of collage. Both artists utilize photography-based processes and take urban architecture and street scenes as their subject, but from there, the work goes in very different directions. Jennifer Williams creates large, often site-specific collages that inspect but distort the architectural scenes she documents. As she has stated, “The rectilinear shape that is the traditional photograph never fulfilled my desire to show everything in a space,” and that will be immediately clear upon seeing her work. Layering images of buildings upon one another, she creates angular and abstract collages while still providing a path for the viewer to connect the image she creates with the neighborhood or street that she photographed. Williams speaks about her process, including the original imaging, her adjustments in post-process, and her large-scale installations, often made on Photo Tex media. We also touch on previous explorations of the city as diverse as Edward Ruscha, Danny Lyon and and Jane Jacobs. Tommy Mintz wrote a software program that creates “automated digital collages” and he has experimented over the years with how he (and the program) composes the street scenes he photographs. The tools he uses for image capture and computation have evolved and become more powerful, but unlike the painstaking control Williams exercises over her collages, the key element in Mintz’s process is the random arrangement and layering of images that the software creates. This is not to say that his images are out of his control—after all, he wrote the program. He selects the scenes to photograph and he does adjust the final product in Photoshop, but the software-generated placement of images creates layers, unexpected shadows, multiple exposures and even seeming glitches that add up to an intriguing and whimsical take on street photography. Join us as we learn about the conceptualizations and processes of these two visual artists and hear how they integrate the Nodal Ninja, Epson 24" printers, and the Sigma dp2 Quattro Digital Camera into their workflow. Danny Lyon is a living legend in photography. Born in 1942 to a Russian-Jewish mother and German-Jewish father, he grew up in Kew Gardens, Queens and went on to study history and philosophy at the University of Chicago. Beginning in the early 1960’s while in his early twenties, he was drawn to the civil rights movement in the south which he immersed himself in and documented. He became lifelong friends with Julian Bond and congressman John Lewis, whom he lived with in an apartment in Atlanta. He was in jail with Martin Luther King, jr. During that decade, he also became a member of the Chicago Outlaw biker gang which he photographed over a period of a few years and he made work in a Texas prison that would eventually become the books, The Bikeriders (1968) and Conversations with the Dead (1971), respectively.Lyon is a Guggenheim fellow twice over (1969 & 1978) and his work is held in countless museum collections around the world including in The Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney. While he devoted himself to photography throughout the 60’s, he turned to film in the early 70’s. His first film, Social Sciences 127 is about a wild tattoo artist named Bill Sanders, which he shot and then edited at Robert Frank’s apartment. It was at his apartment that Frank introduced Lyon to Danny Seymour, who would give him a cheque for $7,000 to finish his next film, Llanito. As a result of Seymour financing his film, Lyon was able to use his own savings to buy a piece of irrigated land in Bernalillo, New Mexico. He built a house on the land with an undocumented Mexican worker named Eddie, which he and his wife Nancy still live in today. We conducted this interview in the living room of their house.
