This week Rachel and Aaron investigate the three words that hit hardest from Donald Trump's recent interview on Meet the Press, and the one word missing from the New York Times's editorial criticizing his first 100 days. Plus the Lord of the Shadows, Stephen Miller, wants you to know MAGA has BIG plans for your children and grandchildren. Last week, the Democratic Party's top congressional leaders finally took a bold stand against President Donald Trump's assault on our democracy when he came to Congress to tout his autocratic agenda. Traditionally, when a president arrives to address Congress, a bipartisan escort committee leads the dignitary to the podium. But, by gollies, Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries showed their toughness by — get this — refusing to have Democrats join the escort committee. Wow — imagine how that uplifted the millions of people being stomped on by Trump's rampage! Is this feeble response better than nothing? Believe it...Article Link

Vice President Kamala Harris rolled out a series of economic proposals, including a 28 percent tax on investment income for wealthy individuals that is far lower than the rate proposed by President Joe Biden. The proposals, which include an expanded tax break for start-ups, mark her biggest policy move away from Mr Biden since taking over the top of the Democratic ticket. On this episode of Morning Shot, Ylan Mui, Managing Director for Strategy at the Penta Group shares her perspectives on the dynamic election duo as the destiny of the White House may hang on a deadlocked fight between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris especially in Georgia and Pennsylvania, two battlegrounds that have been decisive in crowning the last two presidents. In an Exclusive Legal AF by Meidas Touch interview, Michael Popok is joined again by conservative icon, constitutional and presidential scholar, former federal appellate and lifelong Republican, Judge J. Michael Luttig, to discuss in detail his strongly held view that the very soul of America and its Rule of Law and Constitutional Republic is on the ballot this November. Judge Luttig tells Popok this battle for the soul of our country, combined with his love and country and faith, compelled Judge Luttig to not only oppose Trump's “highjacking” of democracy and his party, but to strongly endorse VP Kamala Harris for President. As Judge Luttig so eloquently puts it during the interview, we are one party short of a 2-party system, and the choice is clear for November in that the Democratic party is the only party left to serve as the guardian of our democracy. Vice President Kamala Harris is enjoying a surge in popularity as she runs for President against Donald Trump, but that also means closer scrutiny of her record as a prosecutor here in the Bay Area. She's catching flak from the left for being too tough on crime, and heat from the right for being too lenient, as both San Francisco District Attorney and California Attorney General. For more, KCBS Political Reporter Doug Sovern, along with KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Brett Burkhart spoke with Tinisch Hollins of San Francisco, the Executive Director of Californians For Safety and Justice, the criminal justice reform organization, as well as the State Director of Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice.

A message from Michael Moore: "It's definitely a unique strategy: Defeat Trump by letting Biden have a stroke (or worse). Here is the podcast version of my written plea for someone to please step in and get President Biden the medical evaluation and help he so obviously needs. An amazing one out of five of our 45 previous presidents have NOT made it to the end of their term. The Founders anticipated this and created an easy solution. We all voted for her in 2020 just in case of and for exactly this reason. Stop wasting another minute! We need every one of the next 122 days for the millions of us to be out there doing the work we must do to block Trump from returning to the White House. President Biden, thank you for the good you have done. You will be remembered throughout the ages. But not if you let your enablers hound you into doing what your body is begging you not to do. Be the one who not only stopped Trump, but also the brave man who gave us our first woman in the Oval Office. She will complete your mission — and we will stand beside her. THIS is your moment in history. Let the doctors examine you. Then do the right thing." Vice President Kamala Harris thinks about everything as a lawyer first. That's an observation CNN Senior Reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere has made after many interviews with the Veep. Audie talks with Dovere about how Harris has deployed her prosecutorial skills against Wall Street CEOs, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and even President Biden in a debate moment that nearly derailed his campaign. And they talk about how she is using those same prosecutorial skills this election year, especially around the issue of abortion. Dovere is the author of “Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump.” Dovere: Harris is making unprecedented Black outreach efforts as Biden campaign looks to her to bolster support Learn more about your ad choices. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: Nick Corasaniti of The New York Times writes: “Former President Donald J. Trump's resounding victory in Iowa significantly raises the stakes of next week's New Hampshire primary for Nikki Haley and the increasingly desperate contingent of Republicans who want to move on from Mr. Trump. While Iowa was largely a foregone conclusion at the top, with a spirited battle only for second place, a small but ever narrowing path still exists for Ms. Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, to beat Mr. Trump in New Hampshire. It relies heavily on tens of thousands of independent voters expected to participate in the Republican primary.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/16/us/politics/haley-new-hampshire-independents-trump.html Despite finishing behind former President Donald and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in Monday's Iowa caucus, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley claimed that the Republican presidential nomination is now a “two-person race” between herself and Trump. According to Real Clear Politics polling averages, Trump leads Haley 44% to 29% in New Hampshire and 52% to 22% in her home state of South Carolina. Does she have any chance of actually winning Tuesday's NH primary? On a recent episode of The Journal podcast, New Hampshire voters revealed that they are changing their party affiliation from Democrat to Republican prior to the state's January 23rd primary. Because they can't vote for their preferred candidate—Joe Biden—as he won't appear on the ballot following a Democrat National Committee feud with the state over scheduling dates, many Democrat voters are now registering as Republicans in order to vote against Donald Trump, supporting rival candidates like Nikki Haley. Democrats have seemingly destroyed their own New Hampshire primary, are they impacting the Republican primary as well? Rich appeared on Fox News with host Dana Perino earlier today and he won't stop mentioning. We are less than an hour into the show and he has already mentioned it seven times! Also, does he need Botox? A video posted to Fox News' website documents a secret China-run lab in California—which was seemingly used to experiment on dangerous viruses and diseases including Ebola. Robby Soave of Reason writes: “The World Economic Forum's (WEF) annual meeting is underway in Davos, Switzerland. Last year, disinformation stole the spotlight and was featured as a key problem for global elites to address. This year, the WEF has upped the ante, releasing a report that lists ‘misinformation and disinformation' as the No. 1 short-term risk facing the world—beating out interstate armed conflict, climate change, and lack of economic opportunity. One of the first events at this year's meeting was a panel discussion, ‘Liberating Science,' which largely focused on disinformation as it relates to the climate change agenda.” You can read his full editorial here: https://reason.com/2024/01/18/world-economic-forum-davos-science-disinformation/

U.S. President Joe Biden's chances of re-election are being jeopardized by voters' concerns over his age, the economy and crime, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, creating an opportunity for Republican challenger Donald Trump to return to the White House. The opinion poll found Democrat Biden, 80, tied in a hypothetical November 2024 election against Trump, 77, the former president who is the front-runner for the Republican nomination, with both receiving 39% of the vote and one in five voters undecided. Democrats held a strong advantage among voters most concerned about protecting abortion rights, while Republicans had an edge among those worried about crime, the poll found. Trump remains politically viable despite a battery of federal and state criminal charges revolving around his attempts to overturn Biden's 2020 election win and his mishandling of classified documents since leaving office. He is expected to spend much of next year in courtrooms standing trial while also campaigning. The idea behind No Labels, that Americans should have a third choice between Republicans and Democrats, might be a good idea if our democracy wasn't under attack by MAGA Republicans. But right now, democracy is on the ballot and a third party centrist candidacy will take more votes from Joe Biden than Donald Trump. And it might even get enough electoral votes to deny 270 to either Biden or Trump, resulting in the election being thrown to the House of Representatives. This is not the time to trifle with democracy. And that's what no labels is doing. Dick Gephardt the former Democratic Majority Leader of the House of Representatives come has formed a new group, Citizens to Save our Republic. His focus is to stop No Labels from fielding candidates and if they do, to advise voters in swing states that a vote for the No Labels candidate is a vote for Donald Trump. (This conversation was originally aired on July 6, 2021) Today, on this archive edition of Midday on Politics, a look back at last year's chaotic and unpredictable Presidential election cycle. In a new, comprehensive study of the 2020 race for the Democratic nomination, journalist Edward-Isaac Dovere reports that after losses in early primaries in the beginning of 2020, a despondent Joe Biden thought that his dream of becoming President was once again slipping away. His campaign was broke and in disarray, and he appeared unable to navigate the chaotic nature of a crowded field. But then, with a boost from Congressman James Clyburn, Biden won the South Carolina primary, the first primary he had won in three tries for the Presidency, a victory that propelled him to the nomination. In the general election, even though Biden was facing off against a candidate with a lengthy list of well-known negatives, Isaac Dovere reports one Democratic operative described Biden as “a rowboat with 7 holes in it. We've got to hold on tight and hope he gets across the ocean.” So, why did Biden prevail and why did so many others falter? And even more importantly, is this the best way to choose a President? Edward-Isaac Dovere is a staff writer and lead political correspondent for The Atlantic. He has written a sharp and terrific book about the 2020 campaign. It's replete with great reporting and vivid descriptions of the machinations that took place behind the scenes and insights into how each campaign handled the unprecedented vagaries of this unusual race. It's called Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump. Isaac Dovere spoke with Tom about the book in July on our digital line from Washington, DC. Scenes jump off the page.” —The Washington Post “Essential reading. . . . Michael's conversation with The Atlantic's Edward Isaac Dovere, author of "Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump." This interview is a bit...different than others, not for clean ears! Original air date 11 June 2021. The book was published on 25 May, 2021.
Scott speaks with award-winning journalist and author Edward-Isaac Dovere about his new book, “Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump." Isaac spent the 2020 campaign on the road for The Atlantic after leaving his post as Chief Washington correspondent for Politico. The advance copy of his book made global news the moment it came out because he reported President Obama's private thoughts about his successor. If you follow the news or Democratic politics, you'll want to read his deeply detailed book about the start of the Biden-Harris ticket, the dramatic ups & downs of Senator Bernie Sanders' campaign, and how Democrats reacted to Hillary Clinton's 2016 loss by building activist networks. Dovere also spoke with President Biden early in the first hundred days of his presidency and included that material in the book. “Battle for the Soul,” tells two stories. One, about President Biden, defined himself within the campaign and produced a winning ticket. Secondly, it is the story of why Joe Biden is operating the most progressive administration since LBJ. Today, it's Midday on Politics, and a look back at last year's chaotic and unpredictable Presidential election cycle. In a new, comprehensive analysis of the 2020 race for the Democratic nomination, journalist Edward-Isaac Dovere reports that after losses in early primaries in the beginning of 2020, a despondent Joe Biden thought that his dream of becoming president was once again slipping away. His campaign was broke and in disarray, and he appeared unable to navigate the chaos of the crowded candidate field. But then, with a boost from Congressman James Clyburn, he won the South Carolina primary, the first primary he had won in three tries for the Presidency, a victory that propelled him to the nomination. In the general election, even though Biden was facing off against a candidate with a lengthy list of well-known negatives, one Democratic operative described Biden as “a rowboat with 7 holes in it. We've got to hold on tight and hope he gets across the ocean.”Why did Biden prevail and why did so many others falter? And even more importantly, is this the best way to choose a President? Edward-Isaac Dovere is a staff writer and lead political correspondent for The Atlantic. He has written a sharp and terrific book about the 2020 campaign. It's replete with great reporting and vivid descriptions of the machinations that took place behind the scenes and insights into how each campaign handled the unprecedented vagaries of this unusual race. The book is called Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump. Edward-Isaac Dovere joins us on our digital line from Washington, DC. Author Edward-Isaac Dovere, lead political correspondent for the Atlantic magazine, talks about his book Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump including the “twists of fate” that led to Biden's nomination, Obama's inadvertent role in creating what followed, the continuing battle between progressive and moderate elements of the party, and much more.
Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump by Edward-Isaac Dovere An award-winning political journalist for The Atlantic tells the inside story of how the embattled Democratic party, seeking a direction for its future during the Trump years, successfully regained the White House. The 2020 presidential campaign was a defining moment for America. As Donald Trump and his nativist populism cowed the Republican Party into submission, many Democrats—haunted by Hillary Clinton's shocking loss in 2016, which led to a four-year-long identity crisis—were convinced he would be unbeatable. Their party and the country, it seemed, might never recover. How, then, did Democrats manage to win the presidency, especially after the longest primary race and the biggest field ever? How did they keep themselves united through an internal struggle between newly empowered progressives and establishment forces—playing out against a pandemic, an economic crisis, and a new racial reckoning? Edward-Isaac Dovere's Battle for the Soul is the searing, fly-on-the-wall account of the Democrats' journey through recalibration and rebirth. Dovere traces this process from the early days in the wilderness of the post-Obama era, though the jockeying of potential candidates, to the backroom battles and exhausting campaigns, to the unlikely triumph of the man few expected to win, and through the inauguration and insurrection at the Capitol. Dovere draws on years of on-the-ground reporting and contemporaneous conversations with the key players—whether in Pete Buttigieg's hotel suite in Des Moines an hour before he won the Iowa caucuses or Joe Biden's first-ever interview in the Oval Office—as well as aides, advisors, and voters. With unparalleled access and an insider's command of the campaign, Battle for the Soul offers a compelling look at the policies, politics, people and the often absurd process of running for president. This fresh and timely story brings you on the trail, into the private rooms and along to eavesdrop on critical conversations. You will never see campaigns or this turning point in our history the same way again.

Ever since 1960, the campaign memoir has become almost a genre unto itself. Over the years many of these books have shaped our view of politics. In each of these stories men and even some women have competed for the presidency with the strongest of passion, with the proverbial fire in the belly. In many cases that ambition and their foibles have driven the country's narrative. As divided as we are as a nation, one thing that seems to be unique and universally embedded within our democracy, is the carnival that is American presidential campaign. 2020 was no exception. Chronicling this campaign, or at least the Democratic side of it, is the Atlantic's Edward-Isaac Dovere. His campaign memoir is Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump My conversation with Edward-Isaac Dovere:

EDITED: I mistakenly state that election day is "November 4, 2020." It is November, 3, 2020. My apologies for the error. Trump and his nefarious associates believe they have perfected exploiting the delay in the court system to run out the clock and never be held to account. The fix is not as difficult as you might think. There's an abundance of specialized courts created to deal with specific types of cases. For example, there are drug courts, mental health courts, juvenile courts and domestic violence courts. In federal district court in Washington, DC, for example, there is reentry court. Creating these courts do not require an act of Congress. It simply takes the judicial branch--a co-equal branch of the government--to recognize a particularized need in the criminal justice system and instituting common-sense rule changes to address the need. If there was ever a need to address a deficiency, it is in the way nefarious actors exploit the delay inherent in the system. DC federal district court can easily remedy this weakness by creating an Inter-Branch Dispute Court (IBDC). When legal disputes erupt between the executive and legislative branches, like the need to enforce the House of Representatives' subpoena for Don McGahn's testimony in the impeachment inquiry, the IBDC can give the parties 72 hours to file their briefs, another 72 hours to present their oral arguments and the court decision would be entered within 72 hours of the conclusion of those arguments. The appeals court can follow the same 72/72/72 time table. Justice can be done in a matter of weeks, as opposed to the Trumps and McGahns of the world delay justice for months or years. This common sense approach to fixing a procedurally broken judiciary is a must for the health of our democracy. Defeat Trump! Not because he is a big alpha figure who would bust up the establishment. Not because he's vulgar. Not because lacks a coherent policy vision. Those things can actually be evolutionarily potent in their proper measure. No, the real problem with Donald Trump is that in important lines of development he is arrested at the level of a five-year-old. Keep nukes out of the hands of children. Make sure to vote!
