A Special Look at The United States Presidential Election of 2024 One major lesson from Vice President Kamala Harris' sudden ascension to be the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee is that running mates matter. Backup quarterbacks need to be ready for big games, and vice presidents need to be ready for the Oval Office, as this election year has proven on both sides of the political aisle. Former President Donald Trump was nearly killed by a would-be assassin before he officially selected Sen. JD Vance. Harris is set to be Democrats' consensus nominee only because President Joe Biden stepped aside after questions were raised about his ability to do the job for four more years. It's a point not lost on some Republicans who are second-guessing Trump's selection of Vance and Democrats who are anticipating Harris' pick any day. Of 49 US VPs, only 4 accomplished what Harris is attempting “Veepstakes,” as the informal selection process is frequently called, can feel irrelevant and overwrought as pundits pick apart the attributes and drawbacks of potential vice presidents. Trump compared the process to his old reality show, “The Apprentice,” in which he picked the best person to hire. CNN's Edward-Isaac Dovere reports the Harris campaign plans to hold up Trump's pick of Vance as evidence that the former president is not good at hiring people and that Vance is unqualified to be president. Harris' selection of a running mate – the first major decision of her unexpected campaign – is expected before planned joint appearances next week and in time for Democrats to include the potential veep's name when delegates officially select the Democratic ticket during the first week of August. An awkward introduction to voters Trump picked Vance on the first day of the Republican National Convention in July at the urging of one of his sons and to carry his MAGA movement into the future. Old-school Republicans were immediately alarmed because the pick also signaled a new direction for the GOP, at least rhetorically, on issues from organized labor to foreign policy. The public's introduction to Vance, the young senator from Ohio – he turns 40 in early August – who first became famous for writing a by-the-bootstraps memoir of his path to success, has been rocky. Vance's past comments about women could hurt Republicans' chances with a key voting bloc. His past opposition to Trump, before a conversion to a MAGA true believer, makes Vance now seem like an opportunist.   Ancestry of Kamala Harris Kamala Harris is of Jamaican descent on her paternal side and of Indian descent on her maternal side. According to the Los Angeles Times, "Gopalan (Kamala's mother) was a Tamil Brahmin, part of a "privileged elite" in Hinduism's ancient caste hierarchy."[42] Donald J. Harris wrote in an account of his family ancestry that the Harris name comes from his paternal grandfather Joseph Alexander Harris, a land owner and agricultural produce exporter, and that his paternal grandmother "Miss Chrishy" (née Christiana Brown) was a descendant of Hamilton Brown, a plantation and slave owner.[43] However, Snopes rated this claim as unproven pending further research. Snopes noted that Harris made errors in some of the vital dates he provided for births and deaths of his grandparent

Today's show opens with our favorite Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, having a really, really bad day at work yesterday. First up, the Joe Biden voicemail from Hunter Biden's abandoned laptop. I've had this story for a week, but just could not get to it until today. In the message, Joe wants to talk about a NYTimes piece discussing Hunter's business dealing with a Chinese energy company. Ordinarily, this should not seem like a big deal, except, Joe Biden has repeatedly said he never had any business discussions with his son. Well, we know he has been lying. We've seen pictures, read emails and heard from former business associates. All this voicemail does is add yet more evidence to the growing mound of Joe Biden's lies and duplicity. However, when asked about her boss's message, Karine Jean-Pierre, a gay, black, female, immigrant (making her eminently qualified for her position) refused to address the concern, choosing instead to refer White House reporters to Hunter Biden's legal team. Moving onto Joe Biden's growing list of people to blame for gasoline prices, the Press Secretary was asked why Biden is now going after the gas station owners. Her answer proves she has no knowledge of how the energy sector works nor how a futures market is based. She knows how to read talking points from her printed notes, usually with little connection, but does not seem able to answer questions. Finally, she was asked why 5 million barrels of oil from America's strategic reserve were sent to Europe and Asia? The most qualified Press Secretary in history had no knowledge of the report and could not answer the question. So, we turn to CNN, where Edward-Isaac Dovere has been speaking with Democrats in Congress and around the caucus and says they feel the Administration is “rudderless, aimless and hopeless.” Joe Biden can play the blame-game all day long, but when his own party sees his failure and is no longer remaining silent, that's a problem for the Administration. To end on a happy note, I bring you a study from Ohio State University, which found neighborhoods with more dogs see less crime. As if I needed any new reasons to love my four-legged friends even more, dogs help make your home and your neighborhood a safer place by reducing all crime, including murder and assaults. I guess as long as I have my dogs, I've always got love in my home, in my heart and in my life, and that's a very encouraging thought. On a recent installment of its "West Wing Playbook" newsletter, Politico reporters Alex Thompson and Tina Sfondeles began by highlighting that Biden has participated in "just 10" interviews in the first nine months of his presidency – and not one since Labor Day. His tally pales in comparison to the 57 interviews Donald Trump had done and the 131 Barack Obama had done at the same point in their presidencies, according to Mark Knoller, a former CBS reporter and "presidential watcher." Politico also noted that Biden had done "at least double" the interviews at this point when he was vice president under Obama. "Biden's team is quick to note that he often takes questions from reporters after he does events. Allies of the president are even quicker to note that no one outside of the Washington press corps really cares about press access," Politico wrote. "But the lack of interviews reflects the bunker mentality this White House has taken with the media — particularly the extensive back-and-forths where reporters can follow-up, push, and prod.""Biden has been especially wary of talking to print publications; he has yet to do an interview with reporters from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Associated Press, or Reuters," the newsletter added. Politico pointed out that the only three print interviews Biden had done so far were with New York Times columnist David Brooks, The Atlantic columnist Edward-Isaac Dovere and People magazine as part of a joint interview with first lady Jill Biden. (This conversation was originally aired on July 6, 2021) Today, on this archive edition of Midday on Politics, a look back at last year's chaotic and unpredictable Presidential election cycle. In a new, comprehensive study of the 2020 race for the Democratic nomination, journalist Edward-Isaac Dovere reports that after losses in early primaries in the beginning of 2020, a despondent Joe Biden thought that his dream of becoming President was once again slipping away. His campaign was broke and in disarray, and he appeared unable to navigate the chaotic nature of a crowded field. But then, with a boost from Congressman James Clyburn, Biden won the South Carolina primary, the first primary he had won in three tries for the Presidency, a victory that propelled him to the nomination. In the general election, even though Biden was facing off against a candidate with a lengthy list of well-known negatives, Isaac Dovere reports one Democratic operative described Biden as “a rowboat with 7 holes in it.  We've got to hold on tight and hope he gets across the ocean.”   So, why did Biden prevail and why did so many others falter? And even more importantly, is this the best way to choose a President? Edward-Isaac Dovere is a staff writer and lead political correspondent for The Atlantic.  He has written a sharp and terrific book about the 2020 campaign. It's replete with great reporting and vivid descriptions of the machinations that took place behind the scenes and insights into how each campaign handled the unprecedented vagaries of this unusual race. It's called Battle for the Soul:  Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump.  Isaac Dovere spoke with Tom about the book in July on our digital line from Washington, DC.  Because their conversation was recorded, we can't take any new calls or on-line comments.    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dovere's first book is informed and granular, filled with up-close quotes and lacerating observations, a must-read for newsrooms and political junkies. . . . Battle for the Soul provides ample warning and plenty of food for thought.” —Lloyd Green, The Guardian “A wide-ranging history of a tangled campaign.” —Kirkus Reviews “An incisive and deeply reported portrait of the Democratic party in exile during the Trump presidency . . . . Littered with rich characterizations, wry humor, and impressive insider access.” —Publishers Weekly “There's so much in it. It's so dishy. It's so fantastic. Strongly recommend. I think it is probably the best read of the 2020 campaign. The success of the book is that it doesn't get bogged down in the horse race, electoral math type thing, but it talks about the personalities, how the personalities drove what happened in an extraordinarily unpredictable campaign.” —Charlie Sykes, The Bulwark “Highly recommend – it is a dynamite book.” —John Fugelsang, SiriusXM “An extraordinary new book.” —Thom Hartmann “The inside campaign details I was craving. . . . Scott speaks with award-winning journalist and author Edward-Isaac Dovere about his new book, “Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump." Isaac spent the 2020 campaign on the road for The Atlantic after leaving his post as Chief Washington correspondent for Politico. The advance copy of his book made global news the moment it came out because he reported President Obama's private thoughts about his successor. If you follow the news or Democratic politics, you'll want to read his deeply detailed book about the start of the Biden-Harris ticket, the dramatic ups & downs of Senator Bernie Sanders' campaign, and how Democrats reacted to Hillary Clinton's 2016 loss by building activist networks. Dovere also spoke with President Biden early in the first hundred days of his presidency and included that material in the book. “Battle for the Soul,” tells two stories. One, about President Biden, defined himself within the campaign and produced a winning ticket. Secondly, it is the story of why Joe Biden is operating the most progressive administration since LBJ. Today, it's Midday on Politics, and a look back at last year's chaotic and unpredictable Presidential election cycle. In a new, comprehensive analysis of the 2020 race for the Democratic nomination, journalist Edward-Isaac Dovere reports that after losses in early primaries in the beginning of 2020, a despondent Joe Biden thought that his dream of becoming president was once again slipping away. His campaign was broke and in disarray, and he appeared unable to navigate the chaos of the crowded candidate field. But then, with a boost from Congressman James Clyburn, he won the South Carolina primary, the first primary he had won in three tries for the Presidency, a victory that propelled him to the nomination. In the general election, even though Biden was facing off against a candidate with a lengthy list of well-known negatives, one Democratic operative described Biden as “a rowboat with 7 holes in it. We've got to hold on tight and hope he gets across the ocean.”Why did Biden prevail and why did so many others falter? And even more importantly, is this the best way to choose a President? Edward-Isaac Dovere is a staff writer and lead political correspondent for The Atlantic. He has written a sharp and terrific book about the 2020 campaign. It's replete with great reporting and vivid descriptions of the machinations that took place behind the scenes and insights into how each campaign handled the unprecedented vagaries of this unusual race. The book is called Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump. Edward-Isaac Dovere joins us on our digital line from Washington, DC. They talk about how Pete Buttigieg got robbed of his post Iowa momentum, the tensions between Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, how close Mike Bloomberg came to being the nominee before Warren decimated him in his first debate, and - of course - about how Democrats wound up choosing Joe Biden and the country wound up electing him. They discuss the anti-democracy turn of the Republican Party post-election and how big D Democrats should respond to it. Excavating previously unknown details about a major media event is no easy task — but Edward-Isaac Dovere pulls it off admirably in his new book, “Battle For The Soul: Inside The Democrats' Campaigns To Defeat Trump.” The book is packed with juicy background about weird personal proclivities (Bernie Sanders likes his hotel rooms ***cold***) and awkward dynamics between candidates. And it pulls the curtain back on bigger, more important topics — like the internecine feud between Democratic progressives and moderates, and the party's abiding uncertainty about how to respond to Trump and Trumpism. Listen to Dovere talk it through with Peter Kadzis and Adam Reilly, and then go grab a copy of the book.

Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump by Edward-Isaac Dovere An award-winning political journalist for The Atlantic tells the inside story of how the embattled Democratic party, seeking a direction for its future during the Trump years, successfully regained the White House. The 2020 presidential campaign was a defining moment for America. As Donald Trump and his nativist populism cowed the Republican Party into submission, many Democrats—haunted by Hillary Clinton's shocking loss in 2016, which led to a four-year-long identity crisis—were convinced he would be unbeatable. Their party and the country, it seemed, might never recover. How, then, did Democrats manage to win the presidency, especially after the longest primary race and the biggest field ever? How did they keep themselves united through an internal struggle between newly empowered progressives and establishment forces—playing out against a pandemic, an economic crisis, and a new racial reckoning? Edward-Isaac Dovere's Battle for the Soul is the searing, fly-on-the-wall account of the Democrats' journey through recalibration and rebirth. Dovere traces this process from the early days in the wilderness of the post-Obama era, though the jockeying of potential candidates, to the backroom battles and exhausting campaigns, to the unlikely triumph of the man few expected to win, and through the inauguration and insurrection at the Capitol. Dovere draws on years of on-the-ground reporting and contemporaneous conversations with the key players—whether in Pete Buttigieg's hotel suite in Des Moines an hour before he won the Iowa caucuses or Joe Biden's first-ever interview in the Oval Office—as well as aides, advisors, and voters. With unparalleled access and an insider's command of the campaign, Battle for the Soul offers a compelling look at the policies, politics, people and the often absurd process of running for president. This fresh and timely story brings you on the trail, into the private rooms and along to eavesdrop on critical conversations. You will never see campaigns or this turning point in our history the same way again.

Ever since 1960, the campaign memoir has become almost a genre unto itself. Over the years many of these books have shaped our view of politics.    In each of these stories men and even some women have competed for the presidency with the strongest of passion, with the proverbial fire in the belly. In many cases that ambition and their foibles have driven the country's narrative.    As divided as we are as a nation, one thing that seems to be unique and universally embedded within our democracy, is the carnival that is American presidential campaign. 2020 was no exception. Chronicling this campaign, or at least the Democratic side of it, is the Atlantic's Edward-Isaac Dovere. The book on the 2020 election is out and it's a page-turner. Today, I chat with Edward-Isaac Dovere, author of "Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns To Defeat Trump". I'm able to read this book because I know how it ended. That didn't stop my blood pressure from rising when I started reading it. It was election night 2016 and, for the first time, we learn how both Joe Biden and Barack Obama received the news that Donald Trump would be the 45th president. We'll also speak with someone who will hopefully become part of the soul of the Democratic Party, as Shervin Aazami, candidate for Congress from CA's 30th district drops in to introduce himself.

Edward-Isaac Dovere, the Lead Political Correspondent at The Atlantic. He has covered Democratic politics for 15 years, beginning in his native New York City and carrying him through the Obama White House and then across 29 states during the 2020 election cycle. His reporting has won the White House Correspondents Association's Merriman Smith Award for Excellence and the Society of Professional Journalists' Daniel Pearl Award for Investigative Reporting, among other awards. ————————————————————————— For podcast transcripts and show notes, visit *salt.org/talks* ( http://salt.org/talks ) Watch this video on YouTube: *https://youtu.be/s2vxtBPI1Dc* ( https://youtu.be/s2vxtBPI1Dc ) Developed, created and produced by SALT Venture Group, LLC. With the election only weeks away, President Trump is down in the polls, sowing doubt about the integrity of the vote, and refusing to commit to a peaceful transfer of power. When he accepted his party’s nomination at the Republican National Convention on August 24th, Trump summarized his position: “The only way they can take this election away from us is if this is a rigged election.” What happens if a president loses reelection, but won’t accept the outcome? The founder of Moms Demand Action talks about how she created one of the most successful gun control groups in the country—and where they go from here. Shannon Watts has a bodyguard who travels with her. He doesn’t carry a gun—his job is to scope out the local hospitals and know which one to rush her to if she gets shot. That’s been life for the mother of five since late 2012, when she founded Moms Demand Action, an organization that advocates for stricter regulation of guns. Watts says the threats of violence and rape started coming in within 24 hours of the group’s formation. Threatening strangers have shown up at her house. The National Rifle Association regularly features her in its magazine. Right-wing provocateur Dana Loesch, before she went on the NRA payroll, showed up with a camera crew to confront Watts off-guard at a protest she was leading near the NRA’s annual meeting.  It all started that day in December 2012 when 20 first-graders were mowed down at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, and a frustrated Watts wrote a Facebook post about the need for new gun laws. She figured she’d just join a group that existed—something like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, except for gun violence—sign up for a few events, write a check. Instead, sitting at her kitchen table and almost without realizing what she was doing while talking with the fellow mothers who reached out to her, Watts started what has quickly become one of the largest and most far-reaching organizations in American politics and an aspirational model for how a group of like-minded political amateurs can quickly move from liking each others’ social media posts to having a real impact on policy.
