CeADAR, Ireland's Centre for AI, is playing a leading role in the development of a new diagnostics system for the detection and monitoring of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The €6m 2D-BioPAD project brings together 11 public and private institutions from across Europe with the aim of developing a point-of-care (PoC) diagnostics system capable of detecting the early signs of AD in a way that's faster, cheaper, more reliable, and less invasive than existing tools and procedures. Researchers aim to leverage previous studies by project partners into the unique properties of graphene, a material consisting of a single layer of atoms which is stronger than most steels and has more thermal and electrical conductivity than copper. Researchers hope that a graphene-based PoC diagnostics system will combine nano and DNA technologies to analyse patients' blood samples and identify and quantify up to five biomarkers for AD. CeADAR is leading the training and optimisation of the AI models to be used in the identification of biomarkers and the implementation of the system overall. An ageing population, rising life expectancy, and a lack of available treatments increased incidence and mortality due to AD by almost 150% between 2000 and 2019. It is expected that almost 19 million people across Europe will suffer from the disease by 2050. The increase in AD cases is already having serious implications for public healthcare systems around the world. It is estimated that the treatment of AD patients cost the US healthcare system more than $355bn in 2021 alone, while the labour from unpaid caregiving was estimated to be worth around $257bn. Researchers believe that early and accurate detection of AD will lead to better outcomes for patients who will benefit from more effective and less costly treatments, leading to a lower emotional burden and better quality of life for themselves and their families. It is also hoped that the system will make cutting-edge drug treatments available to the wider public. Currently, drug trials require participants be assessed according to their risk for AD, a costly process which is often inaccessible for the average person. 2D-BioPAD began in October 2023 and is expected to run until September 2027. The system and its impact will be assessed during two clinical trials in three centres in Finland, Greece and Germany. The first trial will focus on benchmarking and technical validation through several use cases. The larger second trial will involve up to 300 AD patients in real-life clinical settings. Head of Innovation & Development at CeADAR Ricardo Simon Carbajo says: "CeADAR is delighted to play such an important role in the development of a ground-breaking digital diagnostics system for the early detection and monitoring of AD. This tragic disease is afflicting more and more people globally each year. The 2D-BioPAD project represents an opportunity to utilise AI in a way that will make a significant difference to the lives of people with AD and their loved-ones. We're excited to be part of that." The project is being led by the Palacky University in Czech Republic. Greek contributors include Q-Plan International Advisers PC (Q-Plan), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), and Greek Association of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders (GAADRD). Other project partners include Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Spain (ICN2), Grapheal SAS in France, University of Eastern Finland and ENVIA APS in Denmark, and CeADAR, Ireland's Centre for AI.

In many languages across the world, all nouns are classed as either male or female, or sometimes neuter. The English language, however, only signals gender in its pronouns - he, she, it or they. For inanimate objects, gender just crops up in occasional examples like ships or countries, which, for some reason, are deemed female. This lack of gender in English intrigued CrowdScience listener Stuart, since the other languages he knows all highlight whether something is male or female. Did English ever have gender, and if so, where did it go? Presenter Anand Jagatia dives into some Old English texts to uncover the idiosyncrasies of its masculine and feminine nouns, and learns why these gradually fell out of use. But why do other languages assign gender to nouns – male, female, and sometimes many more categories too? And does this affect the way we think?Contributors: Andrew Dunning, Curator of Medieval Manuscripts, Bodleian Library, Oxford University Rachel Burns, Departmental Lecturer in Old English, Oxford University Suzanne Romaine, Professor of Linguistics, Hawaii Ida Hadjivayanis, Senior Lecturer in Swahili, SOAS University Angeliki Alvanoudi, Sociolinguist, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Amy Bahulekar, Writer, MumbaiPresenter: Anand Jagatia Producer: Eloise Stevens Editor: Cathy Edwards Production: Ishmael Soriano
In this episode of the IJGC podcast, Editor-in-Chief Dr. Pedro Ramirez is joined by Dr. Dimitrios Nasioudis to discuss lymphadenectomy at the time of interval cytoreduction for ovarian cancer. Dimitrios Nasioudis is a gynecologic oncologist at the University of Pennsylvania. Following medical training at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and a research fellowship at the Weill Cornell Medical College he completed his residency and fellowship training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. His current area of research is translational therapeutics with a focus on low-grade serous ovarian carcinoma. His research interests also include population science and surgical outcomes research. Highlights: The study aimed to evaluate the role of systematic lymphadenectomy during interval cytoreductive surgery in advanced-stage epithelial ovarian carcinoma patients who achieved complete gross resection. An analysis of data from 1060 patients found that those who underwent systematic lymphadenectomy had higher rates of unplanned readmissions and longer hospital stays, with no significant difference in overall survival. Systematic lymphadenectomy was rarely performed and did not provide a survival benefit for these patients.

Date of lecture: Tuesday 19 March 2024 About the lecture: Beauty and aesthetics have always played a multi-faceted role in human society. During the last decades, smile attractiveness has become a very important factor influencing both personal and professional aspects of everyday life. This has been compounded by the effect of social media and marketing. Dentistry has also evolved significantly over the last decades and has the capacity to predictably restore missing teeth with various modalities, including dental implants, or completely transform the shape and colour of teeth with smile make-overs. The demand for such services has steadily increased and patients are faced with a multitude of offers from dental colleagues. Such dental treatment is usually elective and expensive which also leads to the phenomenon of dental tourism. This presentation will showcase the state-of-the-art dental treatment modalities available today for tooth replacement with dental implants and smile design/make-overs but will also highlight the pitfalls of misinformation, overtreatment and marketing of some dental services. About the speaker: Professor Lambis Petridis qualified from the Dental School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
What fasting recommendations are you making for your elective anesthetic procedures? Are you recommending that all your patients be fasted overnight? This has been recommended by veterinarians to countless dog and cat owners for years. However, our human counterparts have changed these recommendations in recent years to shorter episodes of fasting before general anesthesia. The most recent anesthesia guidelines provided by American Animal Hospital Association have suggested a different fasting protocol for small animal patients prior to general anesthesia that look awfully similar to the updated human recommendations. What is the evidence that veterinarians should follow suit, especially given the intricate differences between the human and animal gastrointestinal systems? To help us digest this huge topic is Dr. Ioannis Savvas, Professor of Veterinary Anaesthesia, Analgesia, and Intensive Care at School of Veterinary Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and dedicated researcher specializing in the complex details of how general anesthesia impacts the gastrointestinal tract of dogs and cats. With host Dr. Bonnie Gatson, they will discuss the impact of general anesthesia on gastrointestinal motility, how often reflux and regurgitation occur in anesthetized companion animals, and strategies to mitigate these gastrointestinal complications. And of course, they will discuss what we know and don't know when it comes to preanesthetic fasting protocols for dogs and cats.We invite our listeners to check out articles mentioned in today's episode: 2020 AAHA Anesthesia and Monitoring Guidelines for Dogs and CatsIf you like what you hear, we have a couple of favors to ask of you:Become a member at North American Veterinary Anesthesia Society (NAVAS) for access to more anesthesia and analgesia educational and RACE-approved CE content.Spread the word. Following a summer dominated by extreme weather events worldwide and an inexpressible national environmental disaster in Greece, there's one question on everyone's minds: is there time to reverse the destruction humans have brought on the planet, or are we heading towards an inevitable and irreversible global climate crisis? On Wednesday, September 29 at 18:30 (EET), the next SNF DIALOGUES webcast invites the public and representatives of the scientific community to a livestreamed open discussion at snfdialogues.org about the future of humanity on a quickly warming planet. Following the first SNF DIALOGUES discussion on climate change that took place in January 2020, this event will continue the conversation on the effects of climate change and ways we can take action. Scientific data in a new report from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, prepared by 234 scientists from 66 countries, confirm beyond any doubt that our planet is getting hotter and that human beings are the cause. The consequences of this reality are already apparent. This past summer saw the first-ever rainfall in Greenland and a temperature of 49.6 degrees Celsius (121 degrees Fahrenheit) in Canada. An unprecedented heatwave hit Siberia and mega-fires broke out in Greece, Italy, Turkey, and the United States while deadly floods plagued Europe and China. Scientists tell us we may still have a small window of opportunity to halt global warming—not for the years ahead, where warming is all but guaranteed—but for the decades after 2050. Will humanity immediately make the courageous decisions required, knowing that its sacrifices will benefit not the planet's current inhabitants, but the generations to come? Taking part in the discussion will be: • Niki Evelpidou, Professor in the Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens • Prodromos Zanis, Professor in the Department of Meteorology and Climatology, School of Geology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki • Christos Zerefos, Secretary General of the Academy of Athens and Climate Envoy for Greece Birgit Njaastad, Antarctic Programme Leader at the Norwegian Polar Institute, will share insights on retreating polar ice through a pre-recorded interview that will be broadcast during the live event. Faced with a climate crisis that seems, to a large extent, unavoidable and irreversible, the challenge now is to explore how to adapt to a new reality where natural disasters occur with increasing frequency and how to take action for future generations. The DIALOGUES are curated and moderated by Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou and are held through journalism nonprofit iMEdD (incubator for Media Education and Development). *The opinions expressed by DIALOGUES participants, whether representing officially institutions and organizations or themselves, are solely their own and do not necessarily represent the views of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) or iMEdD. Speakers' remarks are made freely, without prior guidance or intervention from the team.

The topics of inclusion and diversity have found its way into the school system through the implementation of individualized learning plans. These plans are in place in so that we are reaching and meeting the needs of each and every student. However, individualized education and training in the dance class is still a new and in some cases a foreign concept. How does an inclusive environment look in our dance classes, and how to we implement, navigate and foster it? We will discuss some strategies and gain some insight into this important topic today, with the help of Ms. Tsirogianni. GUEST: Tsirogianni received a degree in Physical Education and Sports Science and a Master’s degree in Special Physical Education from Aristotle University in Greece. She is conducting her Ph.D. research on the multiple ways dance therapy can be used for kids with special needs in preschool education. Her academic studies are complemented by numerous certifications from a variety of renowned organizations including a Master certification in dance and disability from the “DanceAbility International Method”. In 2015 she I founded a "wheelchair dance group" for children with mental and physical disabilities in Greece and currently works with many organizations and schools teaching dance to people of all abilities.

The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
https://youtu.be/_wWxOB69r2A Host: Fraser Cain ( @fcain )Special Guest: This week we are excited to welcome Dr. Aaron Rosengren and Di Wu (with Dr. Nataša Todorović in the chat), to the Weekly Space Hangout. Their research team recently identified gravitational interactions which have produced a superhighway network of sorts within the Solar System. This network can reduce transport times for objects traveling between Jupiter and Neptune to decades rather than hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of years. Long-term, this network may potentially be used for human exploration, but in the short-term, it could assist in the study of comets and asteroids. Dr. Aaron J. This week Cynthia is airing one of her favorite interviews with Matushka Constantina Palmer, the author of The Scent of Holiness and The Sweetness of Grace. They talk about how to stay focused on Christ amidst the constant noise that surrounds us. It’s an interview that gets better and better, and even includes some support for the wives of priests. Don’t miss Mat. Constantina’s 3 main tips to draw you back to God during your day. Constantina R. Palmer is from New Brunswick, a quaint province on Canada’s Atlantic coast. She lived in Thessaloniki, Greece, for almost six years, during which time she received a Master’s degree in theology from Aristotle University and studied Cretan-style iconography as well as Byzantine chant. She also spent significant time at a number of women’s monasteries throughout northern Greece. Currently, she lives with her husband, an Orthodox priest, in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada, serving the only Orthodox parish on the island of Newfoundland. She is also a social worker. The SNF DIALOGUES held the second in a series of online discussions on Wednesday, April 29, focusing on the “Infodemic” that is shadowing the pandemic. The live webcast at dialogues.snf.org featured Ioanna Soufleri, a molecular biologist and Chief Editor of To Vima Science; Tasos Teloglou, a journalist and reporter at Ant1; and Thanasis Troboukis, a journalist and Project Manager of iMEdD Lab. They shared their thoughts about the sources of information we rely on, the quality of data available, and our ability to interpret that data to produce sound analysis. “Many of the contradictions in the instructions we all receive on a daily basis have to do with what you can actually do once a particular measure is announced. So we try to articulate instead what you cannot do,” said Teloglou about the varied sets of instructions people in Greece have recently received. This is essentially what the infodemic is: the “excessive dissemination of information, more confusing than it is informative,” Troboukis explained. Soufleri mentioned reasons for optimism in the present situation, stressing that “it all depends on the source of the information, so I'm glad that information on COVID-19 is open and freely accessible to all,” while Teloglou stressed that “information has no national boundaries. If we want to know more about the pandemic, we must also see it from a non-European perspective.” Asked if there is a shortage of journalists capable of understanding and reporting scientific news, Soufleri replied that “this is a question for journalism schools. I believe, however, that we have made great strides in the field of medical journalism.” The Peace Journalism Lab at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki's School of Journalism & Mass Communications presented, via video (available below), the results of a survey launched a few days before the lockdown went into effect in Greece. The survey, which relates to media coverage of the pandemic, delivered data on which specific media are sought out by the public, on public trust in the media generally, and on the problem of misinformation. Journalism professionals also gave voice to unresolved questions and to concerns about how to practice their vocation in the midst of the pandemic in a video (available below) created expressly for the discussion by iMEdD. Troboukis also presented data from the interactive web application created by iMEdD Lab to track the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Greece and around the globe, underlining “people's need for data,” and mentioning that “in less than a month, the application has been visited more than 2.5 million times.” The DIALOGUES discussion was capped off with the screening of a video and photographic material from iMEdD's new journalistic project, “Present,” which is on view in public places in cities across Greece and online at parontes.imedd.org. The DIALOGUES are curated and moderated by Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou. *The opinions expressed by DIALOGUES participants are solely their own and do not necessarily represent the views of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) or the SNF DIALOGUES team. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) DIALOGUES traveled to Thessaloniki for an event dedicated to the city's history, its people, and its multicultural identity. On their first trip to Thessaloniki, the SNF DIALOGUES made Warehouse C at the Thessaloniki Port Authority the place to be. In an event open and free for all, more than 500 Thessalonians and friends came together to discuss the city's identity as a tourist destination, the stereotypes it faces, its multiculturalism, and more. Orestis Andreadakis, director of the Thessaloniki Film Festival, responding the moniker of “the new Berlin” some seek to apply to the city, said, “We should be talking about a new Thessaloniki, not a new Berlin—about a city looking back at its past and its ghosts in order to create a radical future.” Maria Kavala, Adjunct Professor of Modern History at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki's School of Political Science, said, “Thessaloniki was a city the moment it was created. For those who are older, it is the Jerusalem of Southeast Europe, a refugee capital, an intellectual center, while for the young it is… a cool city!” Actor Ieroklis Michaelidis attributed the uniqueness and charm of Thessaloniki to “the clash of the cosmopolitan with the provincial,” stressing that “we transcend our roles when we unite culture, art, and the prospects of dialogue in this region.” Yiannis Boutaris, president of the Holocaust Museum of Greece, spoke about “Thessaloniki's assets, which are culture, universities, and agricultural products,” pointing out that “its multiculturalism and its diverse population” are what make Thessaloniki unique. Georgia Tsiamanta, Project Manager of OK!Thess, said Thessaloniki is “a gigantic window to the world” and made reference to “opportunities for cooperation with our northern neighbors.” Mark Mazower, Professor of History at Columbia University, journalist, and writer, contributed to the conversation via Skype, making the point that "Thessaloniki has always been a vibrant, true city with a historical conscience.” Brief contributions were also made by Dimitrios Zafeiriou, Professor of Child Neurology and Developmental Pediatrics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki; Giorgos Nikolaou, cofounder of the startup SoulScan; and Sofia Sarri, cofounder of the startup Shifting Our City. The SNF DIALOGUES are curated and moderated by Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou.
Alexander the Great (pictured as largest statue in Greece) was the most powerful man in the world 2350 years ago; his victories included conquering Judea. Resettled Judean Eve shares her thoughts about a recent trip to Saloniki in Macedonia, where 2500 years of Jewish life ended in 1943. They were so much a part of the city. Until they weren’t. Sunday, January 28, 2018 In the last 15 years, people’s understanding of how the Solar System evolved into what we observe today has greatly expanded. This became possible as advances in scientific computing enabled us to fully explore a wealth of observational data and -- more importantly -- the powerful theory of Celestial Mechanics, going far beyond its traditional boundaries. As a result, a new theory of Cosmogony has emerged, contradicting the traditional view of a 'perfect clock'-like system; this theory is also applicable to other worlds (i.e. extra-solar systems). In this talk, the speaker begins with a short presentation of the populations of celestial bodies in the Solar System. Then, he explains the basic scientific ideas on which traditional cosmogonic models were based, and discuss how these models fail and why. Finally, the speaker discusses recent theoretical models that explain how the Solar System came to be. On Thursday, January 18th, 2018 the SNF hosted the third event of its new monthly DIALOGUES series, entitled: Journalism in a time of Crisis and Crisis in Journalism. The discussion revolved around questions such as whether the disregard for modern journalism and the media worldwide is a sign of modern times or whether the roots of the problem go back. Why is the credibility of the news constantly being challenged? Why do most of us prefer social media platforms as a news source, and what are the potential threats or possibilities associated with this choice. Journalists Sofia Papaioannou, Aris Chatzistefanou and Kostas Zafeiropoulos, drawing from their own experience, spoke about the dynamic nature and diversity of journalism, the challenges that it faces in view of the broader sociopolitical, economic and technological changes, as well as the opportunities that may ultimately arise. Associate Professor of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Nikos Panagiotou, elaborated on how contemporary trends in news consumption, given the omnipresence of the Internet, determine the future of the media. Valentinos Tzekas, student at the Department of Applied Informatics of the University of Macedonia presented an algorithm which he developed, in order to assist with the detection of fake news, as well as with preventing them from spreading online. The discussion was moderated by journalist Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou.

Dr. Angeliki Ziaka is a Lecturer in the History of Religions at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece, and a Doctor of the Marc Bloch University of Strasbourg. Dr. Ziaka's research interests focus on Muslim theology and history as well as the social, religious and political dimensions of Islam in the Middle East, interreligious dialogue, and contemporary religions. She has published books on the social and political dimensions of Shi'ism (2004), interreligious dia- logue (2010), byzantine and post-byzantine literature and Islam (2010) and the eschatological savior and Messianic movements in Islam (2010). The so-called "old" Islam includes Muslims of Greek citizenship who are fully inte- grated into Greek society, having lived permanently in Western Thrace since the 15th century - when the nation came under Ottoman domination - and make up 2% of the Greek population. The so-called "new" or "migrant" Islam are immigrants who have recently come to Greece from various Muslim countries (financial refugees, political refugees, asylum seekers, students etc.). In order to better understand the status of these two groups, Dr. Ziaka presents a historical, social and juridical overview that will outline the phenomena related to migration and lead to proposals and solutions relevant to the problems involved.
