Your reptilian brain, explained | Robert Sapolsky | Big Think

What's the best way to think about the brain? While most of us think of it as a dense gray matter that's separate from the physical body, that actually couldn't be further from the truth. Our brain is made up of 3 layers, and each layer not only directly impacts the other, but has control over the physical body and how you feel. The 3 functional layers of the brain are the reptilian brain, the limbic system, and the cerebral cortex. The reptilian brain controls the regulatory systems in your body like hormones, body temperature, blood pressure, and even hunger. The limbic system is the emotional function of your brain, making you feel fear, anger, joy, or gratitude. Finally, the cerebral cortex is the most evolved part of the brain that oversees impulse control, decision making, and long-term planning. With a better understanding of how each part of the brain functions, we can have more mindful thoughts that will influence more favorable decision-making and outcomes in life. For example, when you think of your favorite memory or something that makes you happy, your reptilian brain will quickly cool down your body and even lower your blood pressure. This can then lead to feeling less stressed, and finding more joy throughout the day. -------------------------------------------------------------------- About Robert M. Sapolsky: Robert M. As a Christian, it can be confusing to hear all of the evolutionary explanations of why our bodies are dysregulted or how to reverse chronic pain through using the vagus nerve, meditation, breathing, etc.I have had quite a few emails asking me to unpack my beliefs on this. So here it is. In this video, I keep it simple. I believe God created us with a Vagus nerve, Emotions, AND the ability to think Logically. They are all a gift from God and IT is good to use them as tools to heal. Understanding WHY the vagus nerve is helpful to be a great tool in healing. I used cold water, deep breathing, humming, singing and more in my own healing process. It is important that you honor your own conscience with these tools. I also talk about the ACE's study and how Adverse Childhood Experiences can be what causes dysregulation, hypervigilance and chronic pain in the first place. I discuss the term “Trauma” and how it can often be mistaken as a diagnosis that is unhealable. This is not true, nor biblical! Content Warning: Detailed sexual assault memories and related trauma discussionOur bodies absorb every experience we have. These experiences can manifest in our bodies mentally, emotionally, and physically. So when we suffer a traumatic event, how does that resonate in our bodies? And how can we heal from those resonating responses? I'm joined today by Yoga Therapist and Founder of the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program, Anissa Hudak. Anissa and I talk about PTSD from trauma and how those memories live in us and return unbidden. Most importantly, Anissa shares how to process that trauma and how to walk a healing journey.  Anissa and I each share personal stories of sexual assault and triggered traumatic memories as ways to really dig into Anissa's processes surrounding healing. She explains where trauma lives in the body and brain, how it might look physically, and how PTSD draws on those memories. She details the differences between yoga and yoga therapy and links the physicality of yoga to the ability to heal the body's trauma. It's a tough but rewarding conversation today that sheds necessary light on a topic all too familiar to us but not talked about enough.About Anissa HudakAnissa's life has been intertwined with PTSD/Trauma and the military. Not only is she the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran, she was also married to an active duty member (and Iraq/Afghanistan Veteran) for over 20 years. For 3 years, she volunteered at the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Riley, Kansas providing yoga therapy, meditation, and other holistic treatments to the soldiers, family members, and staff. After seeing others struggle, and having her own personal struggles with trauma/PTSD, she was inspired to create the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program. As a Yoga Therapist and founder of the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program, she guides others in the use of effective, science based yoga therapy and other holistic techniques for the management/healing of symptoms relating to PTSD and trauma for people who want to control their PTSD - not allow it to control them.Recently, she has focused her efforts to working with women who have been sexually traumatized to help them heal their PTSD (and other trauma related issues) with yoga therapy. As a 2x rape survivor, she intimately understand the needs these women face, and helps them navigate their healing journeys.Anissa earned her 200 RYT, 500 RYT and was awarded her Certification in Yoga Therapy from the International Association of Yoga Therapy. Additionally, she has completed a 120 Hour YogaFit Warriors training and the MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) online course through the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Currently a student with the Phoenix Rising School of Yoga Therapy, Anissa is learning another approach to utilizing yoga to help release trauma from the body. She works with people with all types of physical conditions, but specializes in working with those suffering from PTSD, TBI's and all trauma-related issues and has been for over the past 5 years.Contact Anissa Hudak, C-IA YT; 500 RYTFounder of the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy ProgramWebsite | Facebook | Instagram | Email | LinkedIn__Resources discussed in this episode:EMDR—Learn more about Dr Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comDownload my free Food Freedom Roadmap hereFollow me on Facebook and Instagram

Welcome to Super Surprise Friday! Today, Dr. Snyder is going to have little chat with us about NLP. He is going to share a lot of insights and tips so be sure to tune in! You don't want to miss out! Standout Quotes: The secret to spinning is to pretend you know exactly where everything is and spin it as if you actually didn't know. Just keep doing it and you'd be surprised at how rapidly your system just takes over and resolves those things. Imagination allows us full access to anything we can conceive of, which allows us to tap into the attributes and bridge to the extra personal or transpersonal level. So once you know what feelings and attributes you seek to get in contact with, you must become absorbed fully in that phenomenon. Key Takeaways: These are just some little tidbits that you can do that can significantly help your spinning. But at the end of the day, the part of you that controls all of these different processes in your body is the exact same part of you that knows how to play pretend. By pretending, you can access that same level of your neurology and all the things that your imagination connects to. Imagination is the key to accessing anything that we want. It allows us to tap into our feelings and the attribute that we seek. We will then be able to manifest the qualities in ourselves and control them. The reptilian brain, composed of the basal ganglia (striatum) and brainstem, is involved with primitive drives related to thirst, hunger, sexuality, and territoriality, as well as habits and procedural memory (like putting your keys in the same place every day without thinking about it or riding a bike). Where this part of the brain becomes useful is when you're trying to influence someone early on in an interaction. Appealing to their instinctual urges and responses to pivot things in your favour. This new found awareness will protect you against the influence of others and empower you to take charge of your own basic desires.

In this three-part series, Lauren talks about parts of the brain that most relate to emotions and behavior: Prefrontal Cortex – Thinking Brain or “Wise Owl”Limbic System – Emotional Brain or “Barking Dog”Brainstem – Reptilian Brain or “Fight or Flight”This episode is about the Brainstem, often referred to as the Reptilian Brain, the Primal Brain, or the Fight or Flight area. The Brainstem is located at the back of the skull, near the bottom of your brain. This area is wired for your survival and is responsible for all vital respiratory and cardiac functions. This part of the brain is responsible for our survival, so it's reactionary and impulsive. We do things without thinking. We just react. Lauren refers to it as the fight, flight, freeze, or fawn brain. How is this part of the brain involved in processing emotions and affecting behavior?Emotions are highly dependent on the body's networks that regulate alertness, involuntary body functions, motor, and sensory controls….all located in the brainstem. The brainstem parts play a critical role in emotional regulation. If the brainstem is under-developed, how can you learn to better self-regulate?Train the brainstem to be calm by embedding things like touch, movement, physical exercise, and breathing techniques. The Purposeful Career Podcast

Last week we talked about Managing Disappointment. This is a super important skill to cultivate in your career and life. Because we all face ups and downs. And it's how we manage the downs that make the difference between staying hopeful and possibility oriented or sinking into disbelief and low self-confidence.   If you haven't listened to episode 27 on Managing Disappointment, you might want to give that a listen first. In that, we share that the key to managing disappointment is to shift your focus from the disappointment to a learning experience. And we offer some ways to do that. It's worth a listen because if there's one thing a career is chock full of, it's opportunities to manage disappointment. And I thought an important follow-on to last week's episode was to discuss Resilience, which is a fancy way of saying being great at bouncing back. So, let's dive in.In the simplest of terms, Resilience is the ability to overcome negative events. According to a study at Ohio State University, more than 80% of us believe we have high levels of emotional and mental resilience, but when tested, less than 60% of us score high for resilience. After the year we've all had with Covid, people getting sick and dying, all of us getting thrown into remote work, some of us losing our jobs, children out of school, parents in the role of teacher, all of us feeling isolated from family, friends, and social situations. Well, it's been a little much, right?  And while the world is still facing the headwinds of the virus, we're starting to get back to the business of life.  We're returning to work. Kids are returning to the classrooms. People out of work are finding jobs. It's great to see.The world is bouncing back. So, have you stopped to think about how well you managed through Covid and its aftermath?Or think about other things – big and small – that have happened in your career or life. How well do you bounce back? Does it take you awhile? Do you stay stuck in defeat and disappointment, or do you spring back in short order? Many of us believe that people are either resilient or we're not. But that's not true. Resilience isn't something we're born with. It's something we cultivate. Something we can build. So let's look at what's underneath resilience.Resilient people are good at regulating their emotions and staying calm under pressure. This helps to keep their head clear which leads to better problem-solving. So how do you get good at regulating your emotions? By mastering the art of self-control. This means, the ability to manage impulses, emotions, and behaviors so they work to your advantage vs. hold you back.As humans, our ability to do that is found in the pre-frontal cortex. This is the part of the brain that's highly developed in humans. It lets people plan and evaluate vs. just respond to impulse (which is caused by the Reptilian Brain.Self-control is about taking power over your own actions and learning to ignore the urges or immediate impulses to just react. No matter how powerful they might be. This self-control gives you the ability to direct your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors toward your desired outcome vs. just responding impulsively in a way that might make you feel better in the short-term, but which might lead to outcomes you don't want. Our career (and our live for that matter) is full of opportunities to exercise our self-control and will power.Like how you respond to that colleague who's always difficult and not supportive in meetings. Do you fire back with a zinger? Or do you keep your composure buy exercising self-control? Check out the episode to learn more.

Welcome back to Financial Therapy. We'll be back with lots of interesting guests joining us in a bigger conversation about us and money soon. But in the mean while lets discuss a little more about money neuroscience, in particular money and our three brains. Well, the three areas of the brain that can relate to us and how we do money. In this episode of Money Neuroscience – we are talking the Reptilian Brain and Money. Our Reptilian Brain, also known as the primitive brain, is the oldest part of the brain and the first part of the brain that is developed when we are in utero. It controls the automatic self-preserving systems and responses, the basic bodily functions such as feeding, pooping, reproduction and our responses to threat. Getting our body to fight, flight and freeze, if needed to survive. This area of the brain sits at the top of our spine, where the spine meets the head or the bottom of our brain structure. If we could scan someone's brain as they considered the reality of them having lost their job in recession, with a family and a large mortgage, without much in savings, we would see this area of the brain, along with some other areas, really light up. Because the circumstance described above is a threat to our modern day survival a threat to the organism. Now if you have been triggered in anyway by this, just take a moment right now to take a big breath in and let it go. But it is important to consider this is where we sometimes go in our financial lives. Our primitive brain has alarms going off when we experience the shock of being told we are losing our job, or our business goes bankrupt, or the stock market crashes, or we are going through an acrimonious financial separation in divorce, or when we feel incapable to change our financial circumstances, drowning in debt or underearning. Essentially it feels like this organism is under threat. And where do we go when we are under threat, we fight, flight or freeze.Thank for joining my at the Financial Therapy podcast.Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=4EDKQRRG3YNK2)

Are you savage to yourself? Or, are you nurturing? Which one of these has been effective… either or none? A surprisingly unique approach to binge eating is going deep into your reptilian brain and speaking like our core evolutionary driver should be spoken to: directly and savagely. As discussed in today’s episode, with a psychologist that has been deep in this exact challenge before, the self love movement doesn’t quite capture everyone in their quest to curb a detrimental relationship with high sugar and high carb foods and there is a reason for that: the reptilian brain, by definition, does not contain love and so for many self love is simply the wrong tool. This was a superb deep dive into the function of our brain and emotions and is loaded with tips and tricks to facilitate your transformation, so if that sounds good listen in all the way to the end as we touch on some tools specifically relevant to this current and unique chapter in history. In Today’s Episode We Cover:Brain function and being the alphaHow to disempower the motivators of your inner pigTools to improve your eating behaviours, particularly during an existential crisis***Join the Facebook Group Here: https://bit.ly/IntermittentFastingForHealth***--SOCIAL MEDIA--Glenn LivingstonWebsite: https://www.neverbingeagain.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/livingstonglenn/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NeverBingeAgain/Other: https://twitter.com/NeverBingeAgain--MATTY LANSDOWNInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mattylansdown/Join the Facebook Group Here: https://bit.ly/IntermittentFastingForHealthWebsite: https://mattylansdown.com/--Got a question? In today's episode we talk about MOTIVATION! I struggle with motivation. I overthink, and suffer (yes, suffer) from Perfectionism and these two things are HUGE motivational blocks. We all have dreams, and goals that we want to achieve no matter the scale, but do you keep finding yourself no further along year after year? Are you constantly resetting the “resolution” clock every New Years???ME!! I've been there, so let's dive into what motivation is and how we can get more of it!What is motivation >> Motivation is the energy and/or reason to act or behave in a certain way.The most powerful and domineering section of our brain is structured around our survival and is very impulsive, always looking for the easy way out. And you'll always be prone to blindly follow its lead, until you understand why and how it works. And decide to do it differentlyOur brains are composed of three main sections that function at three different levels & we dive into what each area is responsible for:Low-level or Reptilian Brain  Mid-level, or Mammalian Brain (Limbic System)High-level, or Human Brain (Neocortex) Although these three sections are very distinct and do very different things, they do have a synergistic relationship and communicate between each other, holistically sharing responsibilities. So why is it that we prefer pizza over salad or broccoli? Why do we resist doing that grueling workout? Or why do we spend countless hours on our mobile devices, or watching TV? Because our most powerful motivational and emotional drivers in our brain reside in our mid-level “mammalian” brain, our Limbic System. And our actions at this level are motivated by three deeply rooted survival instincts…These three instincts have been coined the “Motivational Triad”, and it is crucial to learn and understand what they are and the effects they have on us, and what to do should we need to overcome their powerful habits.Tune in to the episode to learn ALL ABOUT IT!Make sure you are part of the cool kid's club and join us over in our Facebook group, The BOLD insiders. We are living in times where stepping into your sovereign power is a nonnegotiable and fortunately, there are spiritual teachers out there who have the courage to share with the world the truth that part of this war is with the reptilian forces. Now, while this topic may be controversial so some, those who've tapped into their multidimensional selves see clearly that we are navigating through a wild spiritual war. Without a doubt, those who've been most triggered during quarantine are the ones who have an opportunity to reclaim their power and do the deeper work. No longer do we need to have our traumas of the past and unaligned beliefs and conditions to run the show. This is the time for us to reclaim our sovereignty by choosing to take responsibility for our energy, our lives, and the world we want to live. In this episode, I get honest and real about my journey of battling reptilian forces, what these lower dimensional beings are, and what it takes to really step into your sovereign power when the world needs it most. In this episode, I talk about… ◆ Recognizing the Reptilian Forces ◆ Understanding your Reptilian Brain and its connection to the unconscious and subconscious mind ◆ How doing trauma work helps you awaken your sovereign power ◆ My journey of battling reptilian forces ◆ The importance of having a healthy aura ◆ Infiltrations in the spiritual community   If you're ready to align and embody your Truth, I invite you to join me for THRIVE. Hi friends, thanks for joining me for another episode of Peak Human, I’m Brian Sanders and I’m creating the much anticipated Food Lies film. You can follow along with the progress as well as get daily valuable content on the latest health info, pertinent studies, nutrition news, and my diagrams and graphics making sense of the complicated and conflicting world of nutrition. Which really should be quite simple if we used some common sense, knowledge of human evolution and our ancestors, and meld that with the new science that’s coming out daily. You can find me on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook and join the now 100K people who are staying tuned into the latest and greatest info. Just search any of those platforms for “Food Lies” and you’ll find me. Today I’m talking to Dr. Glenn Livingston who’s a clinical psychologist, food addiction specialist, and even worked for the food industry for many years giving him an inside look at their shady practices. He was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. You may have seen his (or his company's)  previous work, theories, and research in major periodicals like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun Times, and many other major media outlets  You may also have heard him on ABC, WGN, and/or CBS radio.  Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants.  Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food. I really enjoyed this conversation because I’ve had countless guests covering what we should eat and why, but there’s an entirely other side of the story that's rarely addressed: what happens when you have all the right knowledge but eat the wrong foods or go on binges anyway? This really may be half the battle (or more) for a lot of people. Please make sure to listen carefully to this one as there’s a lot of practical and actionable info he gives out. If you’d like more help with what to eat, why, and maybe most importantly how to stick to the plan, please look into our new Sapien Program at http://Sapien.org we’ve got our program led by Dr. Gary and our lead health coach and myself that will help change your life. Simple Strategies for Overcoming the Pitfalls of the 3 Parts of Your Brain

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 21, 2019 13:42

This episode focuses on understanding the three main parts of your brain and I had to write this lesson and record this prior to the next podcast tomorrow with Dr. Friederike Fabritius as many of my questions to her will rely on the understanding of these three parts of the brain so I thought it was important to record this first.  Let’s take a closer look at the human brain, so that the insights Dr. Fabritus will share tomorrow, will have more of an impact. The human brain is the most complex organ in the body. Parts of the brain communicate with each other and enable us to enjoy food, communicate, and feel emotions; the brain shapes our entire world and all of our experiences. Understanding how to harness the power that exists within your own body is the key to unlocking the code that controls your results and future. What this future looks like is up to you. Once you have an understanding of how your brain works, and you have some strategies to overcome the pitfalls associated with the three main parts of your brain, you can set yourself up for a razor’s edge advantage over someone else who might not be paying attention to the largest and most complex organ in the human body.  To be honest, I was not paying attention to this part of the body until just a few years ago. No one had ever asked me what I was doing for my brain health—not until I started researching in the area of neuroscience did I know these strategies existed. So, don’t worry if this is new to you. We all start at this place. There are three parts of the brain that I think everyone should understand, whether you are five years old, or 55 years old, we can all understand the basics of how our brain operates for improved results.Understanding the Reptilian Brain: The Ancient Instinctual Brain also known as The Hindbrain The brain stem (imagine this part at the top of your spine on the back of your neck) is the oldest part of the brain and is often referred to as the reptilian brain.[i] This is where vital body functions such as heartbeat, respiration, body temperature, and digestion are all monitored and controlled. The brain stem also holds the reticular activating system (RAS), which is responsible for the brain’s alertness—regardless of whether we’re asleep or awake. This part of the brain functions to keep us alive and safe and works closely with the entire body as well as the limbic system to create our emotional state of mind. The brain stem does not work alone. It is linked to the limbic system above it (in the middle of the brain) to assist, for example, in creating both our fighting states when we feel anger and our fleeing states when we feel fear.[ii] This Ancient Instinctual Brain Controls Our-Sensory motor functions (how our body runs) Survival instinct of fight, flight, freeze, faint[iii]When we understand that we can't help the fact that when we feel fear with something, consciously or unconsciously, our Reptilian Brain reacts on its own with the urge to fight, flight, or freeze.FIGHT- is when we react instead of responding to a situation (those times when we let our emotions take control)FLIGHT- is when we run awayFREEZE- is when we stay frozen and don't even tryTo overcome the pitfalls of the Reptilian Brain, we just need to learn strategies for overcoming our fears that are natural, and instinctual, coming from the part of our brain that was designed to keep us alive. Those who are longtime meditators speak of the ability to take the time to respond to a situation rather than reacting but if you are looking for a quick fix, try these simple strategies.[iv]S-STOP whatever you are doingT-TAKE deep belly breaths to bring more oxygen to your brainO-OBSERVE and think “how am I feeling right now in the moment?” Can you name the emotion? When you can name the emotion, science has proven that soothing neurotransmitters are released to calm you down.[v]P- PROCEED with whatever you are doing with a new awareness. Our next guest Dr. Friederike Fabritius,[vi] talks about this strategy in her book, The Leading Brain: Neuroscience Hacks to Work Smarter, Better, Happier.[vii]She also dives into the importance of adding a sense of fun and fear to your work since fun will add the neurotransmitter dopamine that will help you to retain information better and boost your performance, while just the right amount of fear when you try new things, and push your boundaries will release noradrenaline, a positive hormone that’s released when you have a challenge. Adding fun and fear will prevent boredom and drive you towards focus where the brain will release acetyl choline during this time of focused attention to help us to achieve flow or these high levels of peak performance that we all seek.[viii]Understanding the Second Part of the Brain: The Limbic SystemAbove the brain stem and below the cerebellum (in the midbrain imagine this part of the brain in the middle) is a collection of structures about the size of a lemon, referred to as the limbic system and sometimes called the mammalian brain or Midbrain. Most of the structures in the limbic system are duplicated in each hemisphere. This area is also responsible for “regulating internal chemical order .”[ix] The Limbic Brain or The Emotional Brain Controls Our-Feelings/emotions Motivations The brain’s reward circuit Memory, and our Immune systemThis part of the brain responds really well with motivation and rewards and since it’s the seat of our emotions, this part of the brain will take over ALL the other parts of the brain because our emotional Limbic Brain always wins.[x]In this part of our brain we all have a REWARD and a THREAT system. Most of us work well when we can see the reward for what we are working on. Our brain will release dopamine as we check off our to-do list items and make progress towards our goals. When we are working in a reward state, we will be happy, in a good mood, high performing and achieving our goals. This state is where we should all aim to spend our time as we will be the most productive. But when we are in a threat system, our brain will release cortisol and our prefrontal cortex will shut down, making us unable to work as we go into the fight, flight, freeze state.  Some people do work well with an element of threat to motivate them, (like when you have a deadline for something you are working on)  but too much threat can cause too much stress and lead to eventual burn-out.[xi]To overcome the pitfalls of the Emotional Limbic System:Find ways to make the work you do fun so that dopamine (the neurotransmitter that helps us to feel pleasure and satisfaction) will be released and will help you to see rewards and will motivate you to move towards them.Laugh more because dopamine (this pleasure and satisfaction chemical) is released with laughter. Always keep that funny person on your team who makes everyone laugh. They will help boost the dopamine of your entire team, making everyone motivated towards their goals.Find ways to keep things new since the brain loves novelty. Remember—we don’t pay attention to boring things.[xii]Always push your boundaries and challenge yourself to prevent boredom. The brain will release the positive neurotransmitter noradrenaline that will increase alertness and energy. OTHER IMPORTANT PARTS OF THE LIMBIC SYSTEM that I think are important to know about. The thalamus is the first part of the brain to receive sensory information (except smell) coming from the outside world. The hippocampus plays a crucial role in converting short-term memory to long-term memory. The amygdala plays an important role with emotions, especially fear. The anterior cingulate connects attention, emotion, social function, and pain perception.[xiii]The Basal Ganglia is an important part of the brain connected to the cortex, thalamus and brainstem and is connected to procedural learning, habit learning, cognition and emotion. Stay tuned for the next episode to understand the power associated with this part of your brain. Finally, Understanding the Third Part of the Brain:The Neocortex/The Decision-Making Brain also called our Forebrain where our Prefrontal Cortex Lives. The neocortex is the “outer bark of the brain”[xiv]  that consists of folded gray matter and resembles a walnut. (Imagine this part of the brain as being folded over the midbrain and connecting all parts together). It is divided into areas that control specific functions that “ultimately are about making maps of various things—from perceptions of the outside world to ideas about the brain and well-being .”[xv]The Genius, Decision-Making part of the brain is the newest part of the brain (think of it this way—the brain develops from back to front—the oldest part with our brain stem and the newest is the front of our brain) and it tells us to be LOGICAL and REASONABLE with everyone. This part of the brain controls ourThinking and reflecting Perceiving and remembering Reasoning and planning Language development Multiple intelligences, and our Awareness and self-awareness This is the part of our brain that determines the level of success we will see in our careers. It’s also the part of our brain that reacts when we are tired, or when someone pushes our buttons, we can lose control of the Decision-Making Brain and do or say things are not in our normal character. It is reassuring to know why we lose control, and how to repair our relationships with those around us when this occurs by addressing it, and stepping back, and then taking some time out before coming back to regain composure. To overcome the pitfalls of the Decision-Making Brain we can:Get plenty of sleep and exercise so that we keep our prefrontal cortex operating at its best.Remember that when we drink alcohol, it will interfere with our decision-making brain and too much alcohol can lead to poor judgment, and even impair your memory.[xvi]You can take brain supplements to help you to achieve more focus and alertness.[xvii] I follow Dr. Daniel Amen’s[xviii] work and have learned what my brain type is so that I can be sure to be taking the right supplements for my brain type[xix] and follow the best nutritional plan for brain health. When we can find strategies to keep our brain working at its best, we will perform at our best. I hope these strategies and an understanding of the 3 parts of your brain help you to achieve higher levels of achievement. I’m excited to speak with Dr. Friederike Fabritius tomorrow morning and will dive deeper into the neuroscience of leadership and high performance. See you next tomorrow.RESOURCES:Andrea Samadi Level Up: A Brain-Based Strategy to Skyrocket Student Success and Achievement (2015 Wheatmark, Tucson, AZ).(Lesson 2: Use Your Brain Wisely)REFERENCES[i] David D’Sousa, How the Brain Learns, 3rd Ed. You're downtown late at night, you've just said goodbye to someone after a great first date. When you're walking to your car, you somehow find yourself walking down a dark alley alone. You hear footsteps behind you, your heart starts racing. The footsteps are getting closer. That fight or flight feeling that you're having is part of our innate programming in the reptilian part of the human brain. It's one of the reasons that we've survived as a species so long, so why is it so detrimental to us? First let me address what is the reptilian brain? I've always been fascinated with human psychology and just how our brain works as a whole and there's three main layers of the brain. The reptilian part of the brain being the oldest, which is responsible for basic survival instincts. Our limbic system, or the limbic part of the brain, is responsible for emotions and then the neo-cortex which is more thinking. The brain stem is one of the oldest and smallest regions of the human brain and it evolved long ago. One of the reasons people refer to it as reptilian brain is it actually is very similar to the current, present day brains of reptiles. So this part of our brain controls vital body functions such as heart rate, breathing, balance, as well as our fight or flight responses. The limbic brain actually first evolved in mammals and it records a lot of our memories and behaviors that were either positive or negative, so it's responsible in large part for our emotions. Whereas the neo-cortex is responsible for much more of the critical thinking and the development of human language, imagination and abstract thought and our consciousness as we call it. So one of the things ... I've been in marketing for many years, so we've referred to the reptilian brain quite often. It's one of the reasons you see a lot of ads and content that targets fear, or sex, or scarcity, things like that, because we have our base survival instincts that we often refer to these as the four F's. So the four F's are fight, flight, food, and fornication. Fight, flight, food and fornication. Those are the base survival instincts that we have. If you go way back in time where we're foraging for food and hunting for animals and things like that and we hear someone, footsteps, behind us, that additional adrenaline, that heart pumping, was there to help us survive those, to make us aware that there's fear and we should be fearful and maybe give us a little more energy if we need to run and, "Do I need to run or do I need to fight?" Those are the base survival instincts there but then I also need to eat food to survive and then of course to keep the species alive you need to fornicate. So those are a lot of the reasons and when you talk about ... hear marketers talking about, they're really thing to get into some of our base thinking that a lot of the times, we don't necessarily like to talk about but those are some of the base thought processes that go on for us. It is what it is. So obviously it's been useful, it's kept us alive for a long time. As a species it helped us continue and it's responsible for keeping us alive in multiple ways, one is via the base survival instincts. Making sure we procreated and eat food and the other is ... one of the reasons is why we stay alive when we go to sleep. We don't have to keep thinking to keep our heart rate going or breathing. The reptilian brain is the natural process of heart rate and breathing and things like that is all controlled under that reptilian brain, so it's just your overall survival. So, but why is it detrimental? So a lot of the times ... So if you think about it, it's actually a large part of the reason that we as humans tend to look for the negative and it tends to impact us and we remember it much more vividly than the positive. And if you ... It's one of those things that you think common knowledge, but if you're not sure, look online, you can get all the information on it. Naturally as people,

Responding vs. Reacting We want to identify and solve problems instantly, when, in fact, we are not really sure what the problem really is. Our reaction is to solve problems and to move ahead, rather than creating a process to respond. Responding is a thinking state, while reacting is an emotional state. Making emotional decisions is the default of an ineffective leader. Making thoughtful decisions is the decision of an effective leader. As responsible leaders, we get to choose. What’s your choice?   Yes, there is a difference. Is been said that the difference in reacting and responding is about 10 seconds. Our normal animal behavior is to react to defend ourselves. The learned response is from our developed cortex brain. We must learn to override our instincts to react by thoughtful and intentional strategies for responding to whatever comment or situation that has prompted our attention. Reacting is following another person’s lead, it’s not leading. Taking charge of the situation is leading. The leader defines the culture, the terms of engagement and the anxiety level by their thinking. Reacting is typically not a thinking interaction. Leaders often make a situation worse by reacting. Here’s a short list of the reverse paradigms: Reacting Reptilian Brain Emotional Defensive Instinct Conditioned Immediate Irresponsible Walls Fear Based Victim Mentality Competitive Avoidance Wounded Responding Cortex Brain Thoughtful Engaging Conscious Choice Choice Delayed Responsible Boundaries Relationship Based Self Control Mentality Cooperative Encounter Healthy Being an enlightened and effective leader is not what we are born with. We learn leadership skills. Much of what we have learned is causing us problems and its time unlearn those things and replace them with what works.
