California's governor race is heating up and conservatives are seeing some signs of optimism that the leftist stronghold on the state is finally coming to an end. Thank Gov. Gavin Newsom for that. He's the one who's ushered in a Golden State time where all is anything but golden -- where the state is more known for its bottom rankings across all boards than for its sunshine. Maybe voters there are finally seeing the error of their Democrat-voting ways. And this is good for America if they are because the state is one of the largest economies in the United States, and even around the world. Republican gubernatorial contender Steve Hilton talks about his campaign.

Corey Broad of Avid Water on California's Fixable Water Crisis

Farm City Newsday by AgNet West

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 6, 2025 48:05

The October 6 edition of the AgNet News Hour put the spotlight on California's most pressing issue: water. Hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill welcomed Corey Broad, agronomic sales manager at Avid Water, who shared candid insights into irrigation technology, policy failures, and the future of farming in the Golden State. Broad explained that while California farmers have widely adopted drip irrigation systems over the past two decades, the current challenge is improving efficiency. Growers are now asking how to optimize not just water use, but also energy, fertilizer, and labor through these systems. “It's about finding the right solution for each grower,” Broad said, noting Avid Water's ability to handle everything from pumps and wells to system design and crop advising. He emphasized that irrigation technology also plays a key role in labor savings. Fertilizer applied through drip systems can cut application costs dramatically compared to manual or machine-based methods. But pests like gophers remain a challenge, pushing manufacturers to explore subsurface drip irrigation for orchards as the next frontier. Beyond technology, Broad addressed the political side of California's water woes. He argued that shortages are manmade, the result of decades without significant storage investment since the 1970s, despite the state's population doubling since then. “Imagine if we hadn't built a road since 1979,” he said, drawing a parallel to California's outdated water infrastructure. Broad also warned of uncertainty heading into 2026. Many Westside growers are forced to make planting decisions before knowing whether they'll even receive federal water allocations. “Every year it's the same discussion: will there be water, and how much?” he said. This unpredictability, he cautioned, trickles down to farm communities, threatening jobs, small towns, and local economies. Still, Broad remains optimistic. He pointed to potential federal investment, improved groundwater recharge in districts like Fresno, and opportunities to bridge the gap between agriculture and urban communities. “Yes, this problem is solvable if we take action,” he concluded. For farmers across the Central Valley, Broad's message rang clear: California doesn't lack water — it lacks leadership and infrastructure. The October 1 edition of the AgNet News Hour featured a wide-ranging conversation with Kevin Kester, a fifth-generation rancher from Parkfield, California, and former president of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. Hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill highlighted Kester's experience in both California ranching and national policy, bringing listeners a candid look at the future of cattle in the Golden State. Kester described the uphill battle of running cattle in California, where land values, estate taxes, and regulatory costs far exceed most other states. “People wonder how we can even stay in business,” he said, pointing to California's high costs and thousands of state-specific rules. Despite these challenges, the state still maintains 35 to 39 million acres of grazing land, underscoring the importance of cattle to California's ag economy. The conversation turned to the alarming wolf problem in the Sierra Nevada, where ranchers reported 77 documented wolf kills in just 90 days. Kester warned that California's stricter protections compared to federal listings make the situation even harder to manage. “It's going to take the loss of human life before anything will be done,” he said grimly. Kester also spoke about his time at the White House, standing with President Trump and working on trade agreements, including opening markets for U.S. beef in China and Australia. He credited federal policies with helping offset some of California's burdens but said the fight is far from over. He urged farmers to push for common-sense policies and to stay engaged in policy discussions that affect their livelihoods. Looking ahead, Kester stressed the importance of FFA and youth engagement in agriculture. As someone who served as an FFA officer himself, he sees the program as vital to ensuring a sixth generation continues his family's ranching legacy. “We do this to keep ranches intact and viable for the next generations,” he said, noting his six grandchildren are already helping on the ranch. From wolf predation to estate taxes and international trade, Kester's message was clear: California ranchers face enormous pressure, but with policy reforms and youth leadership, the industry can survive and thrive. Hosts Will Alimonos and Zach Bishop break down a jam-packed episode covering the latest NBA media-day developments, fantasy football pain, a heavy slate of NFL picks, college football upsets, and the closing moments of the MLB regular season. Expect a conversational, game-by-game NFL preview, betting angles, and candid takes on roster news and injuries. The show opens with college and NBA talk (00:00:48) — including a reassuring two-minute Jason Tatum video, tempered expectations on his recovery, coach Mazzulla's tone and tactics, and how missing pieces (Fred VanVleet's season-ending injury, Kevin Durant's ongoing point-guard search, Reed Sheppard's readiness) shift the contender landscape. They also hit Al Horford's new Golden State deal and toss out quick NBA futures bets for the season. The conversation transitions to football (00:06:07) and a full NFL recap (00:11:10). The hosts confess fantasy mishaps (00:21:34) and debate whether late scratch news should spark commissioner intervention. From there, they dive into weekly NFL picks — Rams over the Niners on a short week, a Vikings–Browns preview, Colts vs. Raiders breakdown, Saints vs. Giants reasoning, Cowboys–Jets chaos, Ravens vs. Texans concerns, and betting notes like a Bowers anytime TD (+195) and a Vikings–Browns under play. College football gets the spotlight (00:31:53) with Virginia's OT win over FSU, Oregon edging Penn State, Boise State at Notre Dame, Vanderbilt's surprising start, and the wild post-upset scenes. They also highlight standout performances and preview the next big matchups. Baseball coverage digs into playoff races (00:54:44), Yankees/Red Sox implications, the Guardians' late surge, the Mets' collapse, and the incoming automated ball-strike challenge (00:57:57) — weighing accuracy versus flow. The episode closes with an NBA preseason preview (01:03:21) as Will and Zach mix betting strategy, weekly NBA futures stances, and candid takes on what to expect over the next seven days: injuries to monitor, sleepers to target, and bold picks to watch as the NFL and NBA seasons heat up.

In this episode of American Potential, host David From sits down with Heather Andrews, Regional Director for Americans for Prosperity, to talk about California—America's most populous state and one of its most challenged. From the Gold Rush that made it the 31st state to today's $3 trillion economy, California has always been a land of opportunity. But families and businesses are now facing crushing inflation, heavy taxes, and government mandates that drive people to leave the Golden State in record numbers. Heather explains how bad policy has hurt working-class communities like Stockton, where small businesses are struggling to survive while their representative still chose politics over providing tax relief. The conversation also highlights looming redistricting battles, grassroots advocacy, and the growing push to hold lawmakers accountable. Heather shares how her team is engaging Californians who feel forgotten, reminding them that their voices and votes matter—even in tough political terrain. California may be at a crossroads, but with citizens willing to push back against runaway government, there is still hope to restore freedom, opportunity, and prosperity in the Golden State.
