Starting from Ground Zero? Here’s How to Start Your Over 50 Exercise

The Flipping 50 Show

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 21, 2020 9:27

If you’re looking for tips to start your over 50 exercise, or restart with these new rules, new times, new… I can’t find a dumbbell anywhere and don’t have a treadmill or elliptical at home… or don’t know what to do with it… this is for you! The Question Recently, Flipping 50 Insider Patricia left me this question. Would love to get some direction on the best “starting from ground zero” exercise videos on YouTube. I’ve been sedentary for many years due to a yet unresolved left knee issue (range of motion limitations, etc.) so any suggestions on videos to get me going, burn my oodles of flab from all over my body, and having fun from home would be great. Also, I’m not one who loves to workout so your direction is going to be wonderful. Yes! Let’s get this going. – Patricia B. First, thanks for asking, Patricia. And if you’re listening and you’ve got a question I’m going to link of course- to the show notes, and also to the growing but almost branding new Insider’s Community group on Facebook. There you can share questions, comment about episodes, whether you come from YouTube channel, or you’re a podcast listener, or Flipping 50 TV episode fan.  Options for How to Start Your Over 50 Exercise This episode is full of links to some of my favorite YouTube videos and if you don’t want random exercise, you want it planned and handed to you so it’s organized in the best way to make progress I’m going to link to my 5 Day Flip. It is totally and utterly to solve this problem! Where to Begin For those of you like Patricia, there’s a link to the 5 Knee-friendly video set. Whether it’s because of a lack of cartilage, recent or pending knee replacement, this series of 5 videos tends to your desire to look and feel good, while respecting the fact your knees don’t need to be doing squats and lunges right now. I’ll say this too, knowing I have a thriving YouTube channel and I love you all… YouTube is still random. So while you can start there… as long as you know exactly what to look for, doing random exercises without a plan for where to start, how to progress, how to sequence exercise does not provide fitness. The Problem with YouTube There are dozens- actually hundreds – of videos you’ll find for instance on toning arms. From 20-something influencers to 50 and 60 something women. But none of them… or I should say … all of them I’ve found, fail to mention correct exercise planning, progression, rest and recovery. More than one suggest you do them every day. I fell off my chair. Why? Because the channel has hundreds of thousands of subscribers and that video had millions of views. That is irresponsible fitness instruction. In fact, it is likely NOT fitness instruction. Because someone is thin and exercises does not imply what works for her will work for you. You don’t know her genetics, her diet and what else she does. Ridiculous Advice There are also fitness instructors – celebrity fitness instructors – providing ridiculous recommendations. I dislike the idea of throwing someone under the bus… so I’m reluctant to do this, and instead hope sharing the science of exercise will help them too. But even Jillian Michaels, ultra-popular fitness icon right? She promotes a science that is false – after we’ve literally seen how the process on biggest loser backfired. She promotes products that include sugar and why? Likely because she is making millions doing so and she would have to completely recreate her brand. In my opinion, it would make her even more popular to admit, she screwed up. But given the way she’s dug her heels in, I don’t see that happening.  Before YouTube and What to Do So, I’ll leave that tangent alone, but know who you follow, why you follow them, and have a good idea what you need before you go shopping on YouTube.com First, a good core foundation is key to fitness – and your knee is not a limiter for doing that. So I’ll include some core exercise videos. It’s a perfect month to be doing that as I’m doing a lot of core exercise education this month. Second, start moving and developing a habit. Set a schedule, then start moving with videos that are short – walking videos for instance. I’ll link to an example. Third, but not less important, once you’ve got a habit for a couple weeks, add strength training. You can keep it all on the floor you don’t have to do lunges and squats. You do however, need a plan. I’ve done some free planning videos live for you during COVID19. I’ll link to in the show notes too.  What’s next? There you have it, Patricia. Here’s the danger, a lot of ideas are not helpful. So if you want the simple, already organized week of cardio, core, strength for at home go to the 5 day flip. Get started. If you have a special case, work with an online coach who can help design a program for you as opposed to trying to fit into some existing video or program. Please leave a rating in iTunes! Andrew Dickens Afternoons

So the pressure cooker that our businesses have been in due to our response to Covid 19 yesterday exploded. It was the turn of small business to appear before the Pandemic Response committee and it was a heartbreaking litany of broken hopes and dreams from the sector that employs a quarter of all New Zealanders.Amongst all of them, there was a commonality.Ever since we closed our borders, which killed hospitality and accommodation, and then the lockdown, our small businesses have experienced a dramatic reduction in cashflow that will be fatal for many enterprises. The committee heard that while the government’s wage subsidy has helped them meet one of their liabilities, namely paying the people who do their work, there are many other costs that are sucking their reserves dry. They’ve got no money coming in but they still face debts around rates, insurance, rent, utilities, equipment leases, and all sorts of other business costs. They’re going to the wall and they want the government to do something about it.In their grief, many small business owners believe that the rest of us and the government don’t understand their plight. Can I assure small business that we do.  That we care.  But the thing we all need to know is what should we do and what do you need.  Our problem is that we've hit a wall and no-one knows what to doSo, this morning Stuart Nash and Mark Mitchell faced off about it.  Nash is the Minister for Small Business. Mitchell ran through the pain our small business is feeling and then made the blindingly arrogant assumption that the Minister of Small Business has no idea how small business is feeling.I’m pretty sure Nash has been yelled at by enough small businesses to know how they’re feeling.Mitchell’s sweeping assumption is part of a common complaint against the Coalition.  They’re academics and have never run businesses.Well ,I don’t know whether you watched yesterday’s committee but the best questions came from Tamati Coffey.  He is a small business owner.Take our current Minister of Economic Development and Trade David Parker.  He’s been involved in starting the bio-tech export start-ups A2 Corporation, BLIS Technologies, Botryzen and Pharmazen. He is an experienced CEO and company director.Compare that to Paul Goldsmith who in an alternative world would be Finance Minister now. He’s been a press secretary and speech writer for Phil Goff, Simon Upton and John Banks  In 2000 he got into PR and worked for Tranz Rail and the University of Auckland.  For three years he was an Auckland City Councillor. He’s got an MA in history.  You can say he had his own business.  He wrote 10 books. He’s basically a writer and a spin doctor.People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.  Based on a lot of the aimless questions from our parliamentarians from both sides I would say lack of business acumen is widespread in parliament. What really bugged me about this morning’s debate is how short it was of ideas.Nash tells us somethings coming next week.  They better hurry up because temperatures rising.Meanwhile, Mitchell runs through the story of a laundromat operator who’s business has dropped 70 per cent since in the pandemic who sits in his office with his head in his hands.  But never says what he thinks we should do.And I tell you why.  Because the Mark Mitchell and the Opposition don’t know either.70 per cent of the laundromat’s business came from doing motel and hotel laundry.  That business is gone until borders are opened and domestic tourism restarts. He could borrow money from a bank with a 20 per cent guarantee from the government.  But the bank would take a look at the business and its prospects going forward and say you model is shot so we don’t want to lend you money.  Harsh but true.So what did Mark Mitchell want Stuart Nash to do.? Throw government money at a failing business so it fails a few weeks later than it already would? Is that an efficient use of taxpayer funds?Should the governmen...

The Traveling Introvert
How to juggle multiple projects

The Traveling Introvert

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2020 5:05

Hello, and welcome to the not so traveling introvert. Today I want to talk about managing multiple projects or multiple clients. Because a lot of people are now working from home. And this is for you freelancers out there, you consultants out there. And to be honest, even if you are a career person working in a department, you might have more than one boss, or even within that department working on more than one project. So I want to talk about a couple of things with having a simple method for managing multiple projects to make sure you don't feel overwhelmed. One of the biggest causes of overwhelm is managing multiple projects at the same time, and they might not have the same timeline and that sort of a thing. And there's hardly a business owner or Freelancer who doesn't have to work this way, at least some of the time. So how do you go about managing multiple projects without feeling you know? overwhelmed, don't multitask. That's the first thing as this contributes to more stress. Instead, give each project the time it needs every day in order to feel like you're making progress. So let's say you have three projects A, B, and C. Ooh, imaginative. All right, so set a time limit such as an hour or 20 minutes for you to each project, whenever project a one off project D when after project C, setting aside daily time for each project, in a balanced way prevents one from taking over your whole day and preventing you from getting anything done on the others because you know, once you start fires occur, or you need to wait for emails and that sort of thing. It also helps you make take control of your daily schedule, because there's other things that you'll be doing. And this ensures that the other things that you must get done you have time for as well. And you know, you need to consider does each project need an hour do certain projects need more, you can adjust these time boxes accordingly. And you might set more time for a project that is bigger or has a closer day. deadline, that is for sure. But try and give roughly the same amount of time each day. And when you're approaching a deadline for the, for a, for example, you'll have a sense of how far you've come and how far you need to go. And if you need to make adjustments. Now, you also need to think about if you have more projects coming down the line, can you fit your schedule and plan ahead. For example, if you had a project slated to start Friday, can you block out time starting Friday to give that bit of daily time it already needs and I talked about sort of blocks of time and that's the other part of dealing with different projects and that sort of thing. You know, it's a case of time blocking what you're doing. And I find this really important and I do it myself and sometimes I forget and I have to go back. And there's only so many hours in the day and so much needs to be done. And as I said before, you know you might spend too much time on task a and then you get nothing done on task or project being seen. Nevermind the routine daily stuff that you need to do. Do So, time blocking involves taking each regular task and giving it its own time block in which to work on it. And this works great because it takes each task and treats them all equally. And so you get some work done on something. For example, say your daily to do list is something along these lines, social media work information on a product, you're creating work for client project, think about marketing and conduct market research, right? That's each of these items are super important. However, the client project and the information product a big task and you should work on those each day, you might want to put the client work first because it has a deadline and it means you get paid, and there's consequences if you don't finish. But what if you get engrossed in it and realize it's much bigger than it expected and it eats up into your social media and planning time. So Time, time tracking or time blocking helps you balance all your to dues by assigning each one a daily timeframe and it could look something like 30 days for social media, one hour for the information project, 90 minutes for client work 30 minutes planning your business and like an hour for research. With time blocking, you can make steady progress on each task and nothing that way can kind of slip through the cracks. The other huge benefit is you don't need to multitask because you know that you're going to spend another 9am to 930 on one thing, and you will be focused on that designated activity. So these are a couple of ways that can help you focus and get more done. Try the these time management strategies and see how it works for you to do this, you know, give it a week or two and see what happens. All right, thank you for listening. This is Janice from the not so traveling internet. And I am founder of the career introvert helping introverts build their brand and get hired. If you have any questions, please email me at Janice@thecareerintrovert.com Thank you for listening and I will see you next week.

Nacha is a not-for-profit organization that monitors electronic banking in the US. Unger, an executive with over 20 years of Nacha experience, joined the podcast to address an issue facing many companies: How to Make Payments Remotely when They Are Not Set up to Do So. Schaeffer explained that her readers had been writing and asking, “Help – we pay mostly by check. How can we get folks converted to ACH ASAP?” Unger provides practical, implementable advice to help both those who require verification as well as those who don’t. He also emphasized a number of best practices that all organizations should use. He discussed options when you can get the vendor on the phone and when you can’t. Unger reminded the audience that the vendor wants to be paid so as not to jump to the conclusion that you won’t be able to reach them by phone.  Towards the end, he also provided practical advice for small companies who rely solely on checks and many have thought they had no options.   The session closed with a short discussion of handling those change-my-bank-account requests in a time when it is difficult to reach the vendor on the phone. Government Imposing Hindi is Not Ok Instead of Improving Access to Hindi for Every Home, focus on Improving Access to Education, Health, Electricity and Water for Every Home. Focus on Real Issues Do Not Distract the People History Does Not Lie. Hope the Union Government remembers Anti-Hindi Campaigns in Tamil Nadu in 1937 and 1965. 033: Reflections On Mental Wellness

This week I want to reflect on mental wellness, technology, and sleep.During this first season we didn't set out to explore mental wellness but it became apparent that in the arc of their stories that mental fortitude, resilience, and strength were crucial to the achievements of our guests, even those that had experienced mental health challenges in their lives.Reflecting on these many interviews, intentionality seems to define our guests. Intentionality of how they live their lives and how they live with technology. Whether Ryder Carroll through his Bullet Journal or Debbie Millman's life design methodology where she writes a projected vision of her perfect day five years in the future, defining their future selves seems to be a common trait. Outside of the Podcast, I did a breakfast interview with Fabrice Grinda, Forbes listed No1 Angel Investor, where he laid out his life planning approach, writing 20000-word letters to himself outlining his future life. This for me is intentionality. We live in a world where It's so easy to assume from the polished veneer of our socially connected world that everyone is happy, mentally strong and resilient. Contrast that with the common reality of the distracted lives of those who live in a constant state of what is often called Continuous Partial Attention. I'll quote from the visionary thinker and thought leader, Linda Stone: ‘In large doses, it contributes to a stressful lifestyle, to operating in crisis management mode, and to a compromised ability to reflect, to make decisions, and to think creatively. In a 24/7, always-on world, continuous partial attention used as our dominant attention mode contributes to a feeling of overwhelm, over-stimulation and to a sense of being unfulfilled. We are so accessible, we're inaccessible. The latest, greatest powerful technologies have contributed to our feeling increasingly powerless'.Just consider the neurological and neuro-chemical effects this is having a pandemic of global proportions320m people globally are suffering from depression and anxiety and that's just the reported numbers 16.1 million American workers are affected by Major Depressive Disorder according to Workplacementalhealth.orgIn the US alone the feeling of social isolation is on the rise - 50% of of the population claim to feel ‘alone...disconnected ...that no one really knows us'Since 2011 depression rates have risen 60% amongst 12-17-year-old teens and young adults. This is an individual and a collective problem44% of adults say stress has increased in the last five years 56% of employees say stress and anxiety impact their job performance 62% of missed workdays are attributed to Mental Conditions We need to confront this. I think most of us have experienced the negative impact that social media and technology can have on wellbeing. But we can't turn back the technology timeline and we need to face emerging challenges of rapidly changing world where our identity and purpose as humans will be challenged by the advances in AI and Machine learning - where they can out think us, outperform us and out reason us…Soon we will have to question more than ever who we arewhat we want to beand doSo as technology threatens to erode our humanity, we need to strengthen our collective identity and that starts with us to take action and confront the realities of how we live with technology today. Welcome to The Stone Turntable!!!! (Explicit Language/NSFW)   This week we focus on: Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and adapted from the Upton Sinclair novel Oil!, this 2007 release earned Robert Elswit and Daniel Day-Lewis an Oscar in 2008. Starring Day-Lewis and Paul Dano (et, al), this adaptation takes place in the early 20th century during the expansion of petroleum toward the Pacific Ocean from the Kern County area circa 1917-1927. Day-Lewis portrays Daniel Plainview, a silver miner turned oil tycoon whose driving motivation to exist is to compete and succeed alone in achieving his goals. This film is beautifully directed and Day-Lewis' portrayal is as harrowing as Marlin Brando in Apocalypse Now and explores the human condition and fanatic zealotry from capitalists and Evangelicals alike. It questions motivation, ethos, religious conviction, alcoholism and obsessive narcissistic goal setting. Build a website today, and you'll compete on a new level tomorrow.   Main Segment   If you’re going to sell your art online, you need to be at least passing familiar with how things work online, both technically and culturally.   Doing research is important because you’ll understand how other artists are already selling their art.   I’m not talking about researching what art to make. You should make whatever inspires you.   You can start with a simple Google search for the kind of art you make. For example: pet portrait painting plein air ocean bug art Make a note of the top websites that you find in these searches   What do you like about their websites? What do you dislike? What is their pricing? Do they talk about successful sales? From a collector’s point of view, is all of the relevant information there? Size, price, shipping, descriptions, etc There are some neat tools that will allow you to figure out a little more about how successful an artist’s website is.   The Moz toolbar shows you domain, page authority, backlinks, and social shares of that page.   From there you can look at the artist’s social media activity. Do they interact with their fans? Which social media accounts are the most active? Do they have any social media promotions? Common hashtags? Who do they follow?   Take a look at Instagram. Use the search tool to look for art in your niche. Click on the hashtags that they use.   Other tools: similarweb.com Facebook graph search for pages liked by your friends, pages liked by people who like your page, groups your friends have joined look at the blogs of artists you like, who is on their blog roll or who do they talk about?

Hi there! I’m Cory Huff, and this is The Abundant Artist Podcast, where we teach you how to sell your art.   Go to TheAbundantArtist.com, where you can sign up for our free email course on how to sell art online.   Today’s episode is sponsored by ArtStoreFronts.com. Maximize your Art Sales, By Having a Website that is Built to Do So. Build a website today, and you'll compete on a new level tomorrow.   There's Dreams, which are ethereal qualities – I'd like to have more money, more free time, or I'd like to make more art.   A lot of business coaches tell you that you should set goals. It's one thing to dream up big goals for yourself. Setting big challenges is fun, but where I see a lot of artists burn out is setting their sights on something that they don't actually want because they think that they should.   This is often in the form of getting a big break, or getting into a gallery.   This kind of thought is important because it guides your daily actions. It guides the kind of art you want to create, who your ideal collectors are, and how you will share your message with your ideal audience.   Here’s one of my current Fantasy Ideal Day Schedules (as of this moment – I reserve the right to have as many Fantasy Ideal Day Schedules as I want, and so do you):   7:00am - Wake up, exercise, and eat 8:00am – Spend some time in meditation and spiritual study 9:00am – Make art – writing, painting or something else. Dedicated studio time. 12 PM – LUNCH!! 1:00pm - Email & social media 2:00pm - Consulting sessions with collectors 5:30pm – Dinner with my wife 7:00pm – rehearsal or show   This Fantasy Ideal Day Schedule is not super-realistic. For example, my time on email, Twitter & Forums currently takes up WAY more time than shown here, and at the moment I’m rarely in bed by 11:00 or awake by 7:00... Plus this schedule doesn’t account for any of the client work I currently have to do. But that’s okay – remember, this is a Fantasy Schedule.   It’s a template, because it’s something I aim for, but don’t always hit. That’s okay. Just having a template to shoot for helps me stay on track.

How do I get them started RIGHT? I’m new myself so how am I going to coach THEM?   There are only a few simple things you need to cover with a new person to get them started on the right foot!     We’ll be covering some steps to success for launching a new team partner on today’s show.     Welcome to the show!    Is this your first time listening, or have you listened for a while? Currently, the show goes live twice a week, Monday’s and Thursday’s, with tips, tricks, solid concepts and interview from top income earners.   Send me a tweet - @jackieulmer and let me know where you are when you listen and what your big takeaway is from the show!   We’ll cover how to get a new team partner launched and off to success, if they’ll follow the system and   IF you want even more coaching and insights on how to become a true Network Marketing professional, earning that gangster income, consider joining my coaching community! We cover everything A-Z on Network Marketing and A-Z on Social Media, and how to set up an online marketing system so YOU become the hunted and not the hunter! In other words, people come to YOU, pre-sold on network marketing and pre-sold on a business. Learn more -   JackieUlmer.com/coach     How to Launch a New Team Partner   First, congratulate them on their decision and assure them that they have made a wise decision; that you will get their questions answered; get them trained and be there to support them.   You can’t do it for them, but you can shorten the learning curve and assist them with what to do, and what not to do. If they succeed, it’s because they did it. IF they fail, it is also because they did it, or didn’t do it!   Next, set their expectations and DO NOT make it sound like a breeze. Let them know that most people will say no, but they don’t need everyone. They need to understand the law of numbers, averages, and follow up.   Numbers will create growth; averages improve with practice; and follow up will explode their business because of life timing.   Then, let them know you understand what is probably their 2 biggest fears.   2 Big Fears -   I don’t know what to say or do…   I don’t want to look stupid to my friends and family….   So, goal # one, BEFORE the why and the goal setting is - make sure they know what to do and what to say.  Make sure they understand the 2 ways you make money -   Signing up customers, to use the product.   Signing up distributors use the product and sign up other customers and distributors who do, too.   So, how to do that?   Educate them on how to make that list. Let them know that you “Get” that they might edit it. Talk to them about the top ten people first. Well connected, have the money, are positive and so on.   Then, set their expectations. You “get” that they may be hesitant because they don’t know what to say, so here are some ideas on what to say -   Listen to the show right before this one - 097 - as it has ice breakers.   Make a HOT list - REALLY close friends and family.    I know you are super busy and I won’t take a lot of your time. I’ve launched a business, I know you won’t be interested in it but I do think you’ll love the product. I need a favor. I need you to order a box, sign up, or whatever, and just try the product for a month. I need some testimonials. IF you love it, GREAT, write me a testimonial and continue as my customer. If you don’t love it, no worries, I’ll never ask you again.   Would you be willing to do that for me?   Then, move to the list they will be contacting from a third party approach.   I know you are super busy and would not have time, so I wanted to get your opinion. I’ve started a business and I know you know a lot of people. I’ve always admired your professionalism in business. I’m expanding my business in your area and wonder - who do you know who is sharp, ambitious and does keep their options open for other ways of adding cash flow.   From there, make sure your new team partner knows the “system” to take someone through to present the opportunity.     Do they have a product order in and do they know and understand how to order products; and the importance of auto ship.   Do they know how to sign up a customer and a distributor?   Do they understand the tools?   Schedule a time to introduce them to their upline, if possible.   Explain conference calls, and events. Get the next event on their calendar.   Lay out a daily and weekly action plan that they agree to. They need to know how to get their first customer and distributor which you basically cover in the steps we already went through with their list. Put it into the calendar and schedule it.   Give them 2 assignments to accomplish in the first 48 hours, and these must be income producing activities. Get 2 customers, show the business twice; schedule an in home and begin inviting people.   Ask them how they want to stay accountable and how they want you to handle it when they go MIA - missing in action.   That’s really it. Pretty simple. Other than being available for 3 way calls, there is not a lot your upline can do, once these steps are fulfilled.    THEY must make the list; MAKE the calls; Plug in and keep themselves in action.   ACTION STEPS   Develop a guide that you will use to get someone launched.   If you haven’t really launched yourself - DO SO!   Reach out to team members you have already enrolled and ask if they need support.   Write out your own daily/weekly plan so you can share an example.   Make sure your next company or generic event is on your calendar and you are attending!     iTunes reviews shout out!     Netsacv - I just listened to Jackie’s podcast on planning and productivity and got lots of useful information. The voice mail that is played at the beginning of this episode is why I decided to do these episodes that I call Elsie's Yoga Kula. There is so much power to sharing your journey. This practice of yoga can take you to so many absolutely fabulous places, not only on the mat but off the mat. I know that my yoga practice opened up so much for me, in fact it was the catalyst for gigantic growth in my life, and I'm in no way talking about the poses. They are the icing on the cake :) They provided me with the first courageous steps towards something more! Thank you sooo much for sharing Jeanne (sp?) ! I am thrilled when I hear stories like yours, those that are all about stepping deeper into your self, to see the vast goodness that dwells within! NICE! Oh, and I would be honored to have you come to my class! Even though I only teach 1 public class a week...but more to come, promise! As you can hear, this message was actually sent 'quite' a while ago. I'm trying to go back and honor you guys that sent me messages long ago :) And if you haven't sent a message to share with me and the kula DO SO. I'd love to help all of us stay inspired and feel that we are truly part of a world wide community! So call me to share at 310 651 6238 Hello everybody and welcome to Elsie's Yoga Kula episode #3! Happy Autumn :) Oh man is Pittsburgh gorgeous when the leaves start to change! My most favorite changes, that of the ivy, it's like fire snakes climbing up trees and buildings. So beautiful! So much has happened this year it's unbelievable. truly. Last year right around this time I became a mother. Yep, my lovely Hunter is 1 year old as of October 2. Happy Happy birthday my baby girl! You have shifted me to become someone I honestly never knew was inside. I've gotten...sturdier, that's for sure :) I started to finally teach public classes, I was laid off of my job last November, man! and now I'm in the process of developing my own consulting business. As soon as I get all my stuff in gear I'll let you all know all about it. You can venture to YoGeek.Me, to see a gradual development of posts delving into the world of yoga and technology :) It has been an incredible fortifying year, full of everything you can imagine, calm, love, fear, angst, courage, meltdowns, you name it. I have LIVED! You guys have made this year for me a sort of life line. Your emails and messages and support have provided me with hope and strength. If you are listening to the podcast I now read an email from Maria Rose from Vermont :D and my response to her email! Listen to the Podcast! EYK News: Remember how I mentioned the cool personalized bottle from the company SIGG on EKY Episode 1? Well, I take that back. I used to love those bottles but the practices of their CEO has left me less than pleased. Here's the quick scoop: SIGG CEO Steve Wasik recently announced that SIGG water bottles did in fact contain the toxic chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in its liners until August 2008. That means that any bottle that you purchased before 10/08 contains BPA. They are allowing customers that purchased a bottle prior to this date (you would know by the bronze liner instead of the pale yellow liner that are the new ones) to exchange their bottles. But the Environmental Working Group is not satisfied with this. Here is letter sent by the President of EWG to SIGG: On behalf of the Environmental Working Group (EWG), I write to ask that you issue an unambiguous apology for misleading consumers and retailers about whether SIGG bottles contain the toxic chemical bisphenol-A (BPA). I further urge you to modify SIGG Switzerland CEO Steve Wasik's recent announcement of a SIGG voluntary bottle exchange program. Consumers should be able to take SIGG bottles that contain BPA to an authorized SIGG retailer and receive a refund for the full retail value of the product. The cost of the refund should be covered by SIGG. The announced exchange policy, which forces customers to accept a replacement SIGG bottle, puts them in the untenable position of having to trust Mr. Wasik and his team about the composition and safety of the replacement product. It is our view that SIGG's reputation will be difficult to restore while Mr. Wasik remains at the helm of the company. Sincerely,
 Kenneth A. Cook
President
Environmental Working Group In case you want to exchange your product you can go to http://mysigg.com/bulletin/ to read all about it. I'll post a link in the shownotes. Just last week I was interviewed by David Spark about my new iPhone App! It was such a cool experience. He's a really great guy. What was crazy about the whole thing is that I scheduled it specifically so that Hunter was in an optimal mood and she could keep herself occupied. The interview was supposed to take 10 min. Of course none of it went as planned. As we signed on in Skype, my camera decided not to work...ggrrrrrr. I had to trouble shoot for about 10 minutes! I did have an opportunity to see my lovely friend Inge's face as I had my mini freak out. I asked her to help me but at that time she had no solutions for me. I figured it out FINALLY! then of course, the moment that David started recording the podcast Hunter fell down and conked her head. yep, of course she did. anyway, the whole thing ended up going really well. I'll put a link in the shownotes for ya'll. Here's the article on David's Blog: Elsie's Yoga Class: Making Money From Podcasting Here's the larger piece on Mashable! 9 Successful Techniques For Making Money From Podcasting And speaking of my iPhone/iPod Touch app...Have you gotten a chance to buy it yet? It's $3.99 and what you get is the ability to stream all of my content, all 70+ classes without downloading anything at all, at the push of a button! Plus, I'll be adding a PDF of the sequences of my classes a little bit a time, so you can have it with you as you practice! Occasionally I may add little videos here and there and some other bits and pieces of content. Now, I have to clarify that if you happen to have an iPod Touch, the only time that you can stream the content is when you are connected via Wifi. Thank you Lisa for helping me be clear about this :) Full disclosure, there have been some issues with the 1st version of the app (the classes not streaming and the app itself not opening). The new version HAS been released which fixes the majority of the bugs. If you have downloaded the app and still experience problems, please feel free to contact me via email so we can get the issues resolved! If you have wanted to support this podcast, this is a wonderful way to do it. I do get a teeny bit of money from the sale of each app. I'd like to take the opportunity to thank all of you that have already downloaded the app, from the bottom of my heart, and I'd also like to thank all those of you that have donated to Elsie's Yoga Kula. I'll share that last months donations allowed me to make our car payment. It was a blessing. I've been doing this podcast for 3 years and I have never put up a donate button, until now. At this moment, I feel that I can and I have had requests from you guys, so it's helped me make the decision. If you'd like to donate to the podcast please feel free to do so, if you'd like to donate to the podcast in another way other than in a monetary way, I have put up a page telling you of all sorts of ways in which you can 'donate' that don't include money. Check it out. Any little thing totally helps and like the page says, Support the Podcast, support the family! We have another voice mail from a listener! So listen up if you wanna hear :) Here's Vanessa Best's Web site: The Spinal Space Thank you Juli from Atlanta! I know it was a while ago, but she very kindly sent me an email and told me that I had inadvertedly tagged episode 69 with an 'explicit' tag, YIKES! Totally did not want to do that. I went in there and fixed it as soon as I could, although I know that a few of you got that episode with an explicit tag, and of course there was nothing explicit about it... It's all about listener emails! Carli from Kansas My 16 year old son talked me into trying Yoga with him. He plays football and his coach got them started on Yoga. I am a runner and lift weights, I took a yoga class once but it never stuck. So I started looking for yoga podcasts and came across yours. I loved it. It was very hard for me to follow at first because I am not familiar with the poses. So I went online and found your website! I flipped out when I realized I can look at the poses to the episodes online and follow that way. I'm so stuck on yoga now! I love your classes and how you describe things. You Rock! Thank you so much Carli :) You know, I totally keep forgetting to tell you guys to come check out this site! The pictures are there, there are a couple of times where there are corresponding videos and extra links at times, especially when I mention an article or something like that in my theme :) oh, and the EYK episodes will be transcribed as a blog post (hence this post ;) ), so if you wanna read, what I said, then all you have to do is go to the corresponding blog post! Marie from Ol Miss Hi Elsie!I hope you are well. I've just started listening to your podcasts, and they are so great! I have a random question for you. What kind or brand of mat would you recommend to someone who is just beginning yoga? I have a mat that I have had for a long time, (I've started and stopped yoga a few times), but it is starting to kind of thin and I've found a few holes. Also, do you have any other advice for a newbie like me? Thank you so much and have a great weekend! Marie Here's my answer to Marie Hello Marie :) Great questions! Regarding the yoga mat...I'm a very big fan of the Jade Yoga Mats. At times they can bunch up a little bit off the floor, as they are not as 'sticky' as the yoga mats that you would purchase almost anywhere. My fave from Jade is The Encore because I like my mats to have a bit more substance when I practice. The Encore is the one that I have (at least I have the prototype as they sent it to me before it was released. Also love Beinjoy yoga mats. They are soooooooooooooooooo pretty :) That gets some bonus points from me. They feel very good. Also I own 2 Manduka ™ mats, the purple PROlite and the Black Mat PRO. They have some eco friendly versions that are also available, which I've been meaning to try. My purple mat has lasted me for about 5 yrs! and it looks almost the same as when I bought it. The only thing thats wrong with it now is that my kitties got to it and scratched the tar out of it ;) They also have a mat that supports an organization called 'off the mat into the world' which I think is pretty darn fabulous organization. Another company that I love is Prana. They have a FANTASTIC mat that I want to purchase the is wider than most mats out there. When I practice in order to have my shoulders properly aligned I honestly have to widen them so much that my pinky fingers end up being off the mat. I don't mind, but their new Revolution mat takes care of that! Plus it's eco friendly :) A lot of the mats that I have mentioned are pretty pricey, $60+ and UP! It is a lot of $ I know. You can get some mats from Prana, or Jade or even Lululemon that are eco friendly for between $35 and 40. I know that I have not needed another mat after buying my purple mat so long ago. I just like to try out other mats, and share about them :) Let me know if I can help you with anything else! As a beginner practitioner, I would merely say to take your time, to listen to yourself, and to choose to always be honest and open with yourself every time you get on the mat. Choose to step in deeper and enjoy your own body, with all it's 'limitations'. They make you the unique beauty that you are. If you get through a class and you haven't smiled....I would make that my priority :) Smiling and laughing truly allows for a deeper moving into your heart to see what really matters! Marie's answer: I ended up getting a Manduka Black Mat Pro and I love it!!! I've been practicing for three weeks and it has been really awesome to see how my body is responding. I also wanted to let yo u know that I started a blog about my yoga journey, girlmeetsmat.blogspot.com. I am wide open to any comments or suggestion :) Thank you so much for everything!! NICE! I do love the Manduka Black mat. That thing is hardy, the thing for me is that I now tend to leave that one at home as trekking around with that puppy on a bike, or a bus, or any amount of walking that isn't just a block or so, is soooooooo hard on my back. That mat is HEAVY :) Just to let you all know, there is a fantastic article by one of my Twitter/Facebook buddies, the mighty Nancy Alder and it's all about this same exact subject. It really gets in to more detail about the mats and especially pricing and it's a great read! Nancy Alder's article: Ecologically Minded Yoga Mats Meaghan Message :D Hello! How are you on this beautiful day?! I am a fellow yoga teacher, brand new, and IN LOVE with your site. It is so inspirational and moving and every detail means so much. Thank you for keeping us involved with your journey. I wanted to take a moment to personally invite you to take a peek at my website. I am training to run a half marathon to raise money for research towards Crohns, a disease incredibly close to my heart, which my boyfriend has struggled with for more than 20 years. My website is : meaghansrun.net The first ten people to raise 500 dollars in the next week will be matched 500 from a local company! So, if you are thinking you may be able to donate (any amount, big or small) -- now would be a perfect time! And, it is tax deductible . Lots of love and thanks, Meaghanxo I saw the other day mighty Meaghan or Megan ) sorry if I mispronounced your name that you reached your goal! Congratulations, and if any of you would like to donate to the cause follow the link above! and thank you so much for sending this along! Kate in Italy! Hi Elsie, I am a Canadian living in Italy and have just started using your podcasts for my daily practice. Thank you! You say the phrase "scissor your legs asymmetrically together" quite a few times and I am very confused what this means...is it possible to get some clue about that? Thank you again for beaming your classes out for the world to access. In Italy classes are in Italian which makes English speaking me a little lost. Your classes are a big help. All the best. You know what I wanted to do to answer this question? I wanted to ask my students to tell me what that means to them, as often times I (I think all teachers) tend to relly on saying things one way, and you guys may just have 'better' ways of explaining this. OK, so here goes a bit of an explanation. Isometric movements according to wikipedia: Definition Isometric exercise is a form of exercise involving the static contraction of a muscle without any visible movement in the angle of the joint. This is reflected in the name; the term "isometric" combines the prefix "iso" (same) with "metric" (distance), meaning that in these exercises the length of the muscle does not change[edit] Isometric resistance Resistance in isometric exercises typically involve contractions of the muscle using: ▪ the body's own muscle (e.g., pressing the palms together in front of the body) ▪ structural items (e.g., pushing against a door frame). ▪ free weights, weights machines or elastic equipment (e.g. holding a weight in a fixed position) ▪ pressure plate type equipment that has a digital readout of maximal force. Depending on the goal of the exercise, the exertion can be maximal, or sub-maximal. Basically, you are engaging your muscles even though the poses are 'static'. There is an action that is involved always everytime that you are in a pose. In Anusara the principle that best describes isometric movement (or scissoring the legs together) is called Muscular Energy. Here's the definition according to the Anusara Teacher Training Manual....( you're just gonna have to listen as I'm NOT typing this whole thing out ;). One way that I teach these actions, I learned from one of my teachers Noah Maze, is by getting 2 folded blankets, placing them on a non carpeted floor, placing one foot on one blanket and the other foot on the other blanket. Once you're all set there, widen your feet apart and do a standing pose, like Warrior 2 for example. If you don't pull energy to the midline, I guarantee you that you will be doing the splits! It's a pretty cool exercise that teaches those actions, just for fun! Well, that was a bit of a long explanation! I hope that makes sense Kate! And reaching out to yoga teachers out there, how about you sending me some ways in which you teach pulling to the midline, or muscular energy? It would be awesome to share you wisdom with the Kula :) email me or send call me 310 651 6238 (put that number in your cellphone!!!) Ok, just 3 more things to address, as it looks like we're running a bit long! Ahhhhhh . I got an FB message from Isabella, she just wanted to say thank you to me, but she also mentioned that she was looking for a fan page for me. Well, I do have a Facebook Group! Search for Elsie's Yoga Kula, I haven't started a FB fan page....yet....I'm still figuring out what is best for me and for you guys. I know how crowded FB has gotten with soooooo many fan pages and groups and all sorts of other stuff, and I honestly don't want to add to all that. When I feel that creating a Page will add value, and I can honestly keep it up and have it be a place were you guys and myself can participate more fully I'll do it. I gotta really see how Fan Pages work. When and if I do that, I'll send y'all a little not in the FB Group, OR post something on my blog! This episode's art work is a class that a long time listener Tracee Sioux hosted at her Bookclub weekend getaway. How cool is that???? LOVED it! It was podcast #10 from El Salvador and it was all about authenticity. She said "We were touched and those of us out of practice or beginning were also a little sore. LOL" Thank you sooooo much Tracee for sharing that picture, and it really warms my heart to know that these classes are being used it such fantastic ways!!!! If you wanna know a bit more about Tracee, check out my blog post on my other blog YoGeek.Me. She's a pretty phenomenal woman with an incredible Web site calle The Girl Revolution, all about empowering girls, and I'm ALL FOR THAT!!! And lastly, I'm going to close by letting you know about an Affiliate that I'm working with. I will only work with people and organizations that I whole hearted believe in and whose products I absolutely USE AND LOVE.
