In this episode, I'm thrilled to share a proven method for quickly and effectively outlining presentations, talks, webinars, or any form of communication. At the core of this approach are nine focusing questions I learned from my public speaking mentor. Whether you're a seasoned speaker or just starting out, this episode will equip you with the tools to create clear, impactful presentations on the fly. So, let's dive in and transform the way you prepare for your next speaking engagement! Overview of the Nine Focusing Questions Cliff explains each of the nine questions, using examples to clarify their purpose: Who is the Target Audience? Identifying the specific audience helps tailor the talk to their needs. Is the Talk Persuasive or Enabling? Determines if the goal is to persuade or to enable by teaching steps. What is the Objective of the Talk? Focuses on the main purpose of the talk (e.g., enabling people to outline a presentation quickly). What Keyword Will I Use? Using a consistent keyword, like “questions,” provides a thematic anchor. What is the Pregnant Sentence? A single, clear sentence summarizing the talk's purpose to ensure clarity. What are the Rationales? The main points or reasons supporting the objective, forming the talk's structure. What Resources Support Your Rationales? Examples, anecdotes, research, or visuals that reinforce key points. How Will You Open and Transition into the Talk? I discuss different engaging opening techniques, like storytelling or painting a vivid picture. How Will You Transition and Close the Talk? Strategies for impactful closing, including restating objectives or linking back to the opening. Every consultant, freelancer, or personal brand can become a better speaker by attending the SCORRE Conference with Ken Davis because of 3 benefits I share on this week's podcast. I recently participated in Ken Davis's SCORRE Conference in Nashville, TN…November 4th through 7th. I had heard of Ken Davis for many years and have always wanted to attend, but just never had the chance. If you don't know Ken, he is a really neat guy. He is an author, speaker, coach, and I highly recommend his book Fully Alive as well as Secrets of Dynamic Communication. If you're like me, you're probably impressed by a great speaker that can hold a crowd and come across all cool, collected, and in control. At least that's what I think, and I am always watching and learning from those on the stage as I want to be a better speaker as I know many of you do too. But the truth is no matter how prepared or how many times I have done a presentation, and I still get nervous, think I sound like an idiot and hate watching replays of my talks. I "um" and "uh" way too much and not polished at all, far from being a professional speaker. I also know that speaking can be a big part of your brand and business, not for the money but for the exposure and getting your ideas out in the world. You must be able to communicate effectively from the boardroom to the podcast! Join me as I share the 3 benefits of attending SCORRE and how you can become a better speaker too. She shares the skills needed and challenges you'll face hosting webinars. What trainers need to be effective and the importance of volunteering your time.
2-Minute Tip: Greet Your Audience A lot of speakers pace back stage or pound coffee or try to deal with nerves in other ways before going out to speak. Instead, go out into the audience as folks are arriving, and greet audience members. Have a brief chat to get to know folks. This accomplishes a few things. It gives you something to do and gets you out of your own head It gives you information you can leverage in your talk to better connect with the audience while you speak It gives you a friendly face to look out at from the stage It let's an audience member feel heard and gives them a favorable impression of you Post Tip Discussion: Meet Dave Jackson About 10 years ago, my team and I were looking at ways to integrate this brand new podcasting thing into our corporate training and brand evangelism efforts. I was already a fan of the medium, so I started listening to podcasts about podcasting to figure out how we could do it. Ultimately, I turned most of that project over to Tim Garber who appeared on this show way back in episodes 10 and 11 and who you can still hear at the end of every episode today. But all that is how I found with Dave Jackson whispering in my ear from the School of Podcasting as I tried to find my way to a taxi at the Philadelphia airport in 2008. I've been a fan of Dave's work and all he's done for this medium for a long time, and I'm thrilled to have him on the show today. One of the most important lessons in this chat is that while Dave is an experienced speaker, he still gets nervous before a talk. And then he does the talk anyway. He also still takes the time to rehearse, practice out loud, and try the stage before folks come in. There's a lot more in today's conversation, too. So who is Dave? Dave Jackson started experimenting with audio on the Internet in 2004. In 2005 he launched his first podcast and soon launched the School of Podcasting (the Internet's first site dedicated to helping people learn the right way). His accomplishments include: 3.2 Million Downloads 3044 Episodes Director of Podcasting for the New Media Expo Featured Speaker at Podcast Movement 2014- 2018 Featured and Keynote Speaker at Podcast Mid Atlantic and Podfest Orlando 2018 Inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame Unlike many other “geeks” who know how to podcast, Dave's been a technical trainer for over 20 years. This means he not only understands the technology but can explain it in a plain English “geek-speak free” environment. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Akron (Specializing in technical education). While there are other podcast consultants, Dave believes his experience sets him apart in regards to helping folks make sense of the entire podcasting process. He not only help with the “how,” but also explains the why, and makes sure new podcasters avoid common podcasting pitfalls. Dave's won awards at fortune 500 companies for hi customer service. In a nutshell, he cares. Her latest book, Dynamic Communication: 27 Strategies to Grow, Lead, and Manage Your Business hit stores March 2017. G E T L I V E A L E R T S: TheBusinessOfVideoPodcast.com A testimonial is having someone saying something about what you did or didn't do for them. It is a different way to add a bit of flare to get your business out there. Testimonials are the best way to capture the experience a person has had with you. Unless they are very entertaining, they should be around 15 seconds. To get the best testimonials, you need to ask the right questions. You need to think about what you specifically want to get from the testimonial. Ask what follow up questions they may have to help give you future leads. The trick is to have a set of 4 to 6 questions and ask them in a row and now you have several clips at your disposal. You want them to say what comes to their mind first. If they begin to think it looks less natural. When getting the testimonial and think about how this will help your client. If someone does not want to be on camera still ask if you can use the audio or even just to have it to transcribe it later. Always have a mini tripod and mic on you for on the spot testimonials. You want to be prepared to let them know where the testimonial will be seen. If you need the testimonial bad enough, you can offer to let them edit out what they do not like. If you missed the moment to get a testimonial on video, just stick with a text-based testimonial. You can also put a testimonial requirement in your contract.

Wavve, Audiogram and Sparemin Reviewed 6:33 There are tools that you can use to make a snippet of your podcast. These tools turn them into a video file to paste on social sites like Twiter, Facebook, and Instagram. This is not the first tool to be based on sharing audio snippets. Clammr was a tool intended for you to be able to easily create a clip and those clips were then easy to share. Clammr lasted about three years (2014-2017). I had a lot of great press, and was mentioned on a regular basis. Now a year later, other companies have come to fill the void. My scenario: I looked at the services for what I would use. I want four episode each with a different design. Click Here to get a free video on how to use these tools Headliner (Sparemin) This is a free tool that allows you to make a video out of audio. In theory it can transcribe your audio. The few times I tried the transcription, it was pretty awful. It does give you the ability to have more than one image, as well as text. You can easily make a copy of a project and edit it to be new. There is an image search tool so you can find images to use in your video. BE SURE to read the terms of service as one of the services is Getty Images (who will take you to court for using their images if you didn't obtain a license. You can't beat the price (free). There are videos along the way to help you through the learning curve. Audiogram I liked that Audiogram actually gives you a live animated preview of your finished file. You didn't have to compile it and think, "Oh wait, I don't like that." You can see it before you turn it into a video. They have a bunch of premade designs. You have much more control over things like titles and positions of animations. You can even load an existing design from a previous movie to save time. Audiogram also shows your social sites (if you want) at the end of the video. These are not clickable. When you are done creating your video. you can download it or email it to your phone for easy sharing on Instagram. For me to do four videos a month would be $19. I can do two videos for free. Wavve Wavve the most set of elaborate tools. You can drag and drop exactly where you want things to appear. You have more fonts, etc. When you are done you can post your video to Facebook and Twitter right from your account (and like the others send the video to your phone for Instagram). Wavve does give the ability to do a few free videos per month (depending on the length). They have some video tutorials to walk you through the system. If you are looking to make super cool looking graphics, this is the tool. For my scenerio, it would cost $18/month BUDGET CHOICE If you're looking for free, Sparemin/Headliner is free. While not as versatilscenarioll give you something to share. Again for my scenario (4 shows a month, each video with a new design), Audiogram is $19 a month, and Wavve is $18 Different Features Audiogram has the ability to save your design choices and use them over and over. Wavve has the ability to post to Facebook and Twitter right from your Wavve account Sparemin has an image search capability (again, check their TOS) You will see that you can turn these into a giant time suck choosing the right font, the right etc. If you have access to something that makes trackable links (pretty Link for Wordpress) you may want to use a special link with your Audiogram to see if it generates more clicks. The one thing missing (in my opinion) is stats on how many times the file was played. What You Should Do Even If You Don't Use These Services What I like about these services is it makes you think. It makes you ask yourself, "What is THEY key clip that will make people want to hear more? What clip can I create to motivate people to come and listen." What I Didn't Get To Accomplish In Q1 of 2018 18:28 19:36 Bill Hutchison from YWAM podcast (and ywampodcast.net ) wanted to be a bit more consistent (but did get some things done) 21:49 Brad from We Are the Cinema Guys wanted to work on his calls to action 24:25 Sarah from the Podcastcard Academy wants to be a bit more organized (and now is using Asana, Dave loves todoist.com) 26:08 Max from Aviation News Talk meant to contact a conference but hasn't gotten around to it yet (but he will NOW) 27:42 Win Charles from Ask the Win meant to start a new podcast, but she did find an editor. 31:32 Zach from Rasing Rents (as in PArents) needs to get season two going. 35:29 Dave needs to get his inbox under control, and started off the year super focused, but has slid back to old habits. Question of the Month for May 39:15 We need your answers by 5/25/18 1. Are you planning on starting a new show, if so what is it? 2. If you've had sponsors on your show, how did you get it. Change your perspective and approach at communication with Jill Schiefelbein, author of Dynamic Communication. Dynamic communication for dynamic experiences We communicate a lot in business, and in many ways, business is actually built on communication. But in our efforts to craft the right message while transferring the right information, our communications work against us. “Unless my words are producing direct action or change, I don’t think they’re successful.” - Jill Schiefelbein All day long, we’re communicating with customers, prospects, colleagues, and bosses. So what should we communicate, how and when? How can we communicate in ways that not only convey information, but lead to action? “People do not make decisions based on information. People make decisions based on knowledge.”-Jill Schiefelbein Today’s guest Jill Schiefelbein explains her amazing approach at communication, and how you can use it to inspire real action. Sharing highlights from her book and real-life stories, learn how Jill’s principles can turn your words into action. You'll never communicate with your boss, your co-workers, or your customers the same way again. Listen in! Highlights from the interview: What is dynamic communication, and how is it different? Host, Mike Domitrz, welcomes CAST members Rick Clemons, Jen Rulon, Jill Schiefelbein, and Darren Tipton to discuss boldness. Today’s topic was inspired by the quote by Johan Van Gogh, “Whatever you do or dream you can do. Begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it.” Sharing their individual bold moments leads the group to unpack what being bold means, and possible underlying incentives for boldness. For some, weighing out worst case scenarios and fear are motivating factors to move beyond the status quo. Others find boldness an inherent quality that only needs the right catalyst to bring it out into the light. After listening to the conversation, share your bold moments on The Everyday Mindfulness Show Facebook page. Subscribe to the Everyday Mindfulness Show. Key Takeaways: [2:48] Mike asks the CAST where they first remember being bold in their lives. [7:23] How do you recognize where or when you need to be bold? [10:25] What does boldness, or to be bold, mean to each member of the group? [15:31] Is boldness an individual trait based on perception? [18:58] Boldness strategies — taking the first step. [25:22] Being authentic is the epitome of bold. Rick Clemons is the Author of Frankly My Dear I’m Gay, Host of The Coming Out Lounge podcast, certified life coach, TEDx Speaker, world record holder, and a guy who’s helped 1,000’s of people in over 50 countries across the globe come out of the closets of their lives to escape their bullshit, explore their fears, and elevate their f*cking self-expression. I'm going to be going over podcasting in the next few episodes. So many people think it starts with a microphone (which is a logical start), but it doesn't. It starts with an idea. It might be an idea that is fueled by a need. That need may be to help people. It may be to make them laugh, cry, think, grown, or inspire them. You want to connect with impact. This is where your podcast starts. It starts with an idea. Taking Your Podcast Inventory This topics starts at 14:21 What do you like? What are you good at? What do other people say you're good at? What do you not like? According to the Book Secrets of Dynamic Communication you are either intending to persuade or enable people. Persuading People Everyone _______ should _____ (i.e. Every coach should podcast). Enabling People Every ____ can ______. (i.e. very coach can podcast). Even sports shows are insinuating that everyone can/should cheer for their team. A comedy show might be getting you to think about something in a different (funny) way. Why Would People Listen to Me? This is a common response. After all it's easy to focus on ourselves. We are our favorite subject after all (right?). So instead of focusing on what people will think about you, think about what you are giving them? It's usually not scary to give someone a gift they know they will love, so why should delivering content that will positively impact them be scary. Communication is about the person (singular) who you will be helping, persuading, instructing, entertaining them. So How Do You Know If Your Podcast Will Impact Your Audience? You need to live in your niche. You need to hangout where your audience hangs out. This could be Facebook groups, Google Groups, Linkedin Groups, Meetup.com, etc. You need to go to where they are, and see what they are talking about. You can read books about our subject, and read blogs as well. You can watch movies about your subject. This is one of those "simple but not always easy" kind of things. There are no shortcuts. Once you know who your podcast is for, you know WHAT to talk about. Why Are You Getting Into Podcasting? There are many reasons: Be Seen as an Expert Reach a Global Audience Find Like Minded People Boost Sales of Your Own Products Boost speaking confidence Engage Your Community Make additional income Fun with friends and family. The WHY is the rudder of your podcast boat. It helps direct the content in the direction that will help you achieve your goal. It your message and your goal are out of sync then you will find it harder to achieve success. The Main Hurdles of Podcasting There are many things that stop people from podcasting. Here are what are feel are the top 10 excuses. Nobody will listen to me I hate my voice I just need "one more thing" People might say negative things I'm not a geek I don't have time We all know that speaking in public is the #1 fear among humans. This means at a funeral, you'd rather be the person in the casket then the person delivering the eulogy. A Podcast Is A Recipe My wife makes a kick butt spaghetti sauce. To watch her make it, one might think she has no idea what she is doing. She doesn't measure anything. She has some core ingredients, but at some point she starts adding a little of this, and a little of that. She samples the sauce, and tweaks some more. In the end, it's awesome. It took her years to perfect it. Every now and then, we will be eating at the table and she will announce that it still needs _____. To her it's missing something. Meanwhile the rest of us are on our second helping as we loosen the buttons on our pants. When you aim for perfection and miss, you land on really, really good. If you never serve your sauce until it is perfect, people will starve. In a world of Kardashians and Celebrity Wife Swapping, MY GOD ARE WE STARVING FOR GOOD CONTENT. Don't Fuel The Stupidity Fire Podcasting starts with an idea - not a microphone. If you've not figured out WHAT you are going to podcast about and take the step to purchase equipment, you are fueling the stupidity fire. Why? Because it becomes a reminder that you still haven't launched. It puts pressure on you. Now that you've spent money, you NEED to podcast so you don't look stupid purchasing a microphone. Why you don't want to feed the stupidity fire is you will have enough voices in your head that fuel your lack of self-confidence. This is natural. Unless you have a background in talking in public, you're not going to be confident in your decision to start a podcast - AND THAT'S OK. With this in mind, don't purchase your Podcast Equipment just yet. Write Down Three Ideas For Your Podcast Episodes Do a quick exercise and write down what your first three episodes will be about. Don't worry about the length, format, artwork, etc. What will you talk about. You don't need to script it out, we are just brainstorming. What would your audience like to hear? When you get that done, do it again. Turn off the TV, NetFlix, YouTube and brainstorm potential ideas for your show. Once you get that done. You have planted the seed of a podcast. Choosing a name, a website, etc will be in the future, but you have identified that you have something to say, and can create content. Don't over-think this. You can start a podcast. Joking and poking fun at himself on the show, this former, overweight comedian and author, had to fight off the the well-intentioned, beach-front, bystanders, as they desperately tried to haul him back to sea. They had mistaken the family outing for a manatee rescue operation. OK, so maybe it wasn't that bad (although pretty close), when today's guest caught a glimpse of an oceanside picture of himself next to his granddaughter (her in a child's bathing suit, him in a MUCH LARGER ONE). It was the motivational jumpstart he needed to quit super-sizing, get in shape, drop the winter coat, became a triathlete and begin to live Fully Alive. Thirty years ago, our guest, funny man Ken Davis, was called by The Dallas Morning News "One of the funniest comedians to come down the pike."
