Hey guys, welcome back to The Mind Mate Podcast! I'm your host, Tom Ahern, and in today's episode, we're diving deep into the fascinating world of psychotherapy through the eyes of two legendary figures: Carl Rogers and Irvin Yalom. Carl Rogers, the mastermind behind client-centred therapy, has revolutionised the way we think about the therapeutic process. One of his most famous quotes is, "The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change." Today, we'll explore how Rogers' emphasis on unconditional positive regard, empathy, and authenticity creates a nurturing environment where clients can truly thrive and discover their genuine selves. On the flip side, we have Irvin Yalom, a pioneer in existential psychotherapy, who brings a unique perspective on the human condition. Yalom's approach is deeply rooted in addressing fundamental human concerns like death, freedom, isolation, and meaning. He beautifully encapsulates his philosophy with the quote, "The therapist is the fellow traveler, not a master or superior; the aim is to guide the patient on a journey of self-discovery." We'll discuss how his collaborative and humanistic approach helps individuals navigate their existential journeys. In this episode, I'll be breaking down the core principles of both Rogers' and Yalom's therapeutic goals, and how their insights can help us achieve greater self-understanding, acceptance, and fulfilment. Whether you're a therapist, a psychology enthusiast, or someone keen on personal growth, this episode is packed with valuable insights and inspiration. So, sit back, relax, and join me as we uncover the transformative potential of therapy with the wisdom of Carl Rogers and Irvin Yalom. *** The Mind Mate podcast provides listeners with tools and ideas to get to know themselves. Psychology-based with an existential twist, the podcast delves into topics ranging from philosophy, spirituality, creativity, psychedelia and, of course, the meaning of life! Your host Tom is a counsellor and psychotherapist who specialises in existential concerns and relationships. He is also a writer who enjoys exploring the ideas that emerge in therapy to help people live meaningful lives. Find out more here: https://ahern.blog/

Ever wondered if transformation was possible for you, or if healing yourself was even an option outside of therapy?I chatted with my colleague and fellow therapist, Tom Ahern this week, all about our journeys in self-healing and managing our mental health. It was fascinating to dive deep into the topic and explore the idea that therapy isn't the only route to self-healing (pretty wild - coming from two therapists!).Some of the questions we discuss:What does self-healing mean anyway? Why do you call it an 'art'?What do you know about self-healing?What's your experience with self-healing?How do you know it's effective? How does therapy fit into the picture? What would you say to someone who feels stuck and is having a hard time in their own self-healing?--Connect with TomInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tom.ahernFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tombahernMedium: https://medium.com/@tom.ahernYouTube: https://bit.ly/2shhVqMPodcast: https://anchor.fm/the-mind-mate-podcastConnect with HeidiInstagram: www.instagram.com/heidirogers_Facebook: www.facebook.com/heidirogers.helloWebsite: www.heidirogers.com

Simone was a guest on this Nonprofit Coach Podcast many times over the years. For her final episode, she directed the title would be “Nonprofit Coach: Simone Joyaux Uncensored Thoughtful, Inspirational Philanthropy.” If you knew her, I am sure you agree that title sums up her incredible career. She mentored me on the importance of this podcast, and on every episode, her passion for the fundraising profession, the success of all Boards of Directors, and all charities they serve were on display for all. Her unending drive for excellence flows through every episode. She and I spoke at the same events around the world for many years. We were both invited to participate in the 2000 AFP Faculty Academy (photo) and served on several committees together. When I reached out to her life partner Tom Ahern to ask if it would be ok to host this special edition of the Nonprofit Coach “In Celebration of Simone,” he said, “Of course, Ted!!! That would be wonderful.” Simone was unfailingly kind and tough all at the same time. Simone was riveting, inspirational, and a speaker of truth. Future generations of donors and fundraisers alike will reference and rely upon the wisdom in her many books and lectures. In this edition of the Nonprofit Coach, we share memories and the wisdom of Simone that future generations will benefit from. Join us, call in, and share as we gather “In Celebration of Simone.”

The ego can be thought of as many things. Some refer to it as “arrogance made manifest” but it is deeper than that. Some say it is the thoughts in your head and it is, but it is more malleable than that—and we know this because our thoughts change all the time (at least the seemingly less significant ones). When we identify ourselves by our egos—and, unfortunately, this is not always a conscious decision—we derive our sense of self from something that isn't us. The ego ultimately seeks some kind of superiority; it compares itself to others, and that when we identify as our egos, we never meet other individuals at all; only the constructs of our minds. What does this mean? It means that we have become who we think we need to be—complete with moral superiority and social acceptance—to not only be included, but be loved, whole, welcomed and desired. Thoughts are projections. They are ideas about ways to access or grab ‘what is'—as Eckhart Tolle would say—outside our selves. The ego always needs some kind of antagonist because it defines itself by the other. Identity is something that humans desperately seek because to not be someone means to be no one, and being no one is scary! Enjoy this episode of the show guys!
Siobhan Lou is a Breathwork Meditation Healer, all the way from the Scottish Highlands! After involving herself in a few Breathwork classes in Bali—whilst working as a head trainer/coach at a functional training facility—she was deeply moved and is now inspired to help others gain a greater sense of self-awareness, practice being mindful and reconcile with past traumas and “stuck energy”, having completed her Healing training in New Mexico, USA. Siobhan works hard to provide people with the tools to heal themselves, leading to greater fulfilment, authenticity and clarity. In doing so, Siobhan is excited to help people holistically, through movement and mindfulness, cultivating lives with purpose. Siobhan also loves her two incredibly cute Beagles, ‘Archie' and ‘Abbey', as well as drinking coffee with her partner. On this weeks episode of the podcast I talk about the ways you can stop procrastinating. I believe there are two ways to stop procrastinating: one of them is to reduce the chaos of your To Do list or schedule. What I mean by this is that often times we like to get all of our tasks done in one day and that inevitably leads to disappointment because our expectations have not been met. So to set more realistic expectations it can be a great way to simply reduce the amount of tasks needing completion per day so that you actually can move the needle and progress. Often times also our specific tasks are far too ambiguous and this leads to too many decisions that need to be made which also leads to procrastination because the more decisions we have to make the more energy we use. If our tasks are far more specific, we will be much more likely to get them done because we won't have to make so many decisions. In a sense, we will be able to flow into task completion. So have some foresight when you are preparing for your To Do list. I recommend organising your To Do list or scheduled the night before so that you know exactly what we have to do the following day and can simply get stuck into doing it. Accountability can also be a great way to keep you on the path. Be honest, and let a friend or someone you trust know that you would like to have these things done and if you don't have them done, come up with some dire consequences for your procrastination. Have some fun with it though! After all, this is about you becoming a better version of yourself and what could be more enriching than that!

How to re-wire your brain & How to change the perception of your reality so you always get what you want. The meaning of dreams - and what your unconscious is trying to tell you. Tom Ahern is a counselor, podcaster and writer. As a counselor, he runs an online program for driven adults. His therapy looks to solve two fundamental problems: a lack of purpose and high anxiety. He helps individuals cultivate an intrinsic sense of purpose—with greater directional clarity—and self-awareness, helping them befriend their minds along the way. Human beings function best when they are focused on the future, aiming towards a greater life for themselves and others. Tom Ahern has a specific interest in helping adults with trauma-related issues—and its many branches which include OCD, panic attacks, and triggers—as well as existential and narrative therapy. He believes that we are fundamentally a product of the stories we tell ourselves; our self-fulfilling prophecies if you will. Furthermore, he believes in building a simple and meaningful life and helps people men make practical, long-lasting changes. Tom is also the host of ‘The Mind Mate Podcast’ which helps listeners ‘get to know themselves’. He interviews spiritualists, philosophers, psychologists, and others from all walks of life. Tom is the author of ‘Yes I’m Fine, Just Tired’, his first book relating to his experiences with OCD, panic attacks, and generalised anxiety disorder. He is currently writing his second book, ‘Yes I’m Fine, Just Busy’ which takes readers through the ups and downs of an existential and mental breakdown, leading (of course) to a mental breakthrough!
Tom Ahern is considered one of North America’s leading authorities on donor communications. Tom works with dozens of clients nationwide every year. Each year, he delivers dozens of workshops on the techniques of (and psychology behind) effective fundraising communications. He is also the author of four well-received books Tom is also an award-winning magazine journalist, for articles on health, women’s rights and other social justice issues. He has his MA and BA in English from Brown University, and a Certificate in Advertising Art from the RI School of Design. His office is in Rhode Island. He writes his books at his second home in France. In our conversation we discussed How fundraising is about activity Why now, why us, why anyone would care How nonprofits and charities need authenticity
How do you attract and retain donors? Is direct mail dead? How often can you ask for donations without driving donors away? According to The New York Times, Tom Ahern is one of America's most sought-after creators of fundraising messages. Also the author of 'If Only You'd Known' ... 'You Would Have Raised So Much More', Tom answers these questions and more as he discusses with Brad the things school Heads need to know for their school to raise funds well. If you don't take anything else away from this podcast, just take this: The number one thing that has motivated James to continually improve as an individual is his daughter. James inspires me because, despite his relapses, his continuing fight stems from something (someone I should say) which gives him meaning; a reason to be alive and make a difference. We have had two episodes in a row about addiction and James' message is just as strong as Tom's. The "difficult truth" behind addiction is that we find peace and solitude in temporary comforts and pleasures because they help us escape the reality of our current situations. From this perspective, ADDICTION IS A SPECTRUM. Anything, be it, hard drugs like heroin down to the daily drink after a day's work can be an escape if we are finding it difficult to sit with our realities. Sometimes it's the thoughts, other times its the environment and people. If it's all three, the addiction can be worse. Listen to James' story and have a think and see if any of this resonates with you. What do you find yourself doing, saying, behaving like consistently when certain factors are in place within your life. What are you trying to escape from? Can you do something about it? As seen in past episodes with our guests Sonia Balcazar (#79) (https://tandemnomads.com/tn79-grow-portable-consulting-business-sonia-balcazar-meza-cuadra/) , running a charity or an NGO can be a great way to complement or build a portable career. But not only that, it can be a source of fulfillment and purpose that a lot of expat partners look for. In this episode, you will find great advice on how to run a non-profit in a professional and sustainable way. Derry Deringer will share with you his tips to get what nonprofits need most, money! Listen in to his advice on how to raise funds and build relationships with your donors. Derry Deringer is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE). He built most of his career working for NGOs such as the United Nations World Food Program. In 2012, he founded his company, Deringer Consulting, to help small and medium-sized nonprofits improve their fundraising, performance, and leadership. “I realized starting my own business was the path for me when I could answer three main questions: Is there a need for the service I envision? Do I have knowledge in that area? Are people willing to pay for my services?” Highlights from this episode How Derry started his consulting business The agreement he made with his wife to make sure to commit to the family’s revenue The type of audiences that usually fund an NGO and the type of funds to raise How to convince an institution to donate The donor cycle and how it works: Identify the donors and research their interests Cultivate relationship Make the ask Stewardship How to build a relationship with a potential donor How to run the meeting to ask for the contribution The difference between an individual donor and a business or institutional donor How to find a sponsor to fund your events How to keep donors and make them donate regularly to your nonprofit The key indicators to measure fundraising performance How to deal with competing nonprofits looking for funds from the same donors The best time of year to ask for donations “You have to enjoy the work you do because your work, your personal life, your spiritual life and who you are as a person are all intertwined.” More Notable Quotes My first client was my wife because she needed to be sold on the idea to start my business I looked at the numbers financially and I had 9 months to make my business sustainable I knew what my commitments were within the family budget and I made sure nothing in our family finances would change when I started my business When you start a business, it is important to involve your spouse and your family In philanthropy, you have the art and you have the science of fundraising. Donor communications guru, Tom Ahern is a copywriter by trade. He knows the ins and outs of donor-centric fundraising and gave us some great tips for nonprofits. People like having conversations, but hate being “talked at.” Donor communications really are a two-way street made up of conversations and working together. This is easy to say, but harder to actually do. It’s important to make your donors feel like they are having a conversation with you. You can do this by sending out surveys on a regular basis, having them take online polls, soliciting feedback readers, holding online office hours for your donors on your website, and including contact information (like a phone number) in all of your donor communications items. Donor retention is important and the first step to that is meaningful conversations. A strong relationship with your donors can make a lasting impact. There are a few things that every nonprofit should do, but a first important step is knowing the different types of donor communications. Tom and Randy talked about Vu Le’s article and how two types of fundraising-- donor-centric and community-centric-- and how the two differ, how they are better fits for different nonprofits and how the two guru’s couldn’t disagree more about the topic.
