In this episode we talk to the heroes at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya who rescue orphaned baby elephants, raising them until they can return to the wild. They tell us all about a special baby elephant named Toto. We're also joined by musician, historian, and creator of the Brooklyn Folk Festival, Eli Smith. He talks about his life in folk music, plays us the same song on two very different banjos, and explains the competition he invented that involves tossing banjos into Brooklyn's murky Gowanus Canal (if you have an iPhone or Apple device, be sure to check out his banjo toss video game). Next we hit the slopes with Ariana and learn about the history, hard work, and thrill of ski racing in Vermont. We also get a report from our on-the-ground correspondent Nola, who walks us through the city of New Orleans with all its special flavors and sounds. Not to be outdone, Bobby the Bigfoot returns to chat with Evan and (try to) play a banjo. Plus, we have our usual favorite sounds, jokes, riddles, and general hijinks. In this episode of Undivided Birmingham, Dr. Chris Crain interviews Eli Smith, Birmingham Police Officer and Pastor of House of Miracles Church, about best practices for keeping your church and congregation safe and secure against intruders who seek to do harm. Pastor Eli's #1 tip is to lock your car doors and remove all valuables from your vehicle. Also, make sure you lock your office doors and have a sign-in system in place for visitors. That way you have a record of who is in your building at all times. Another great tip is always let people know where you are going. This is a good thing to do for various reasons but is especially helpful should you have a medical emergency while out of the office. Pastor Eli shares so many important tips in this podcast. We hope you enjoy listening and please subscribe!

He and his wife Chundra, also a Birmingham police officer and now retired, are the parents of five children. He has established an Engage East Lake Team at House of Miracles and together they are moving the church into the next generation. Formerly Lake Highland Baptist Church and located in an old historic building made from stones, House of Miracles is a new church plant, a new entity, with a new voice but the same message of God's gospel of grace and salvation to all who will believe.

We need to take the time to help each other, to support each other, to care for our youths, and instill wisdom in our youths. Don't just talk about the change, be about the change. In this episode, we are joined by Eli Smith to learn from his experience as being a Black business owner in America. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover how you can be a successful business owner. Learn how you can establish your worth. Learn how to stay positive and motivated as a Black business owner living in America Episode Highlights What Is It Like Being Black In America? Eli shared that it is a struggle being Black in America. Eli mentioned that there is the constant feeling of not being able to breathe. He shared that being Black we hear more “no's” than “yes”. We are constantly fighting to just find our worth; trying to create values within our own communities. Being Black in America, you feel as though you always have to try to match up in order to be equals. We need to show support to those in our communities. Eli believes we need to normalize building up our fellow Black business owners and aspiring business owners instead of tearing them down. Divide & Conquer- What Role Does This Play In Our Society Today? Eli shared that the ‘Divide & Conquer' phenomenon during the time of slavery, and even to this day was how Whites were able to get members of the Black community to turn against each other. Eli spoke on a powerful concept, “Redlining”- where banks would give certain loans to those who wished to purchase a home. In certain communities, he shared that they would make sure that Blacks would not be able to own homes; placing them all together in particular cities. In doing so, it was easier for policing, easier for them to enter communities and assault Black men or women, and to treat Black children unfavorably. In these communities, you'll find high rates of unemployment and schools without proper teaching systems. How Can We Shift Our Mindset? Eli also shared that in his role as a Black business owner, he always tries to give back to the community through his foundations and through his yearly summit known as the Dream Summit. For this annual summit, he would get business professionals to come in and talk about How to Create Wealth and Value Within the Black Community. He also shared that his company represents diversity- by hiring people from all over the world. Eli Shares His Background Eli shared that from the age of 17, he learned the value of a contract through his father's teachings. Eli also shared that even from a young age, he always knew that he wanted to pursue a career in business. He shared that his father taught him to realize that with everything you are told, make sure you do your research to know if it's true. Knowing Your Worth Eli shared that many times we look in our communities for praise and honor, and a lot of times there are always people trying to keep us down. There should not have to be a policy to tell you to love your fellow men. Eli also shared that we should not place our faith in a government that has tried to keep us down. 4 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “Don't be quick to put people down” “Stop looking for acceptance from those who didn't want us here, to begin with” “We have to realize that people deserve a second chance in life” “Never take and trust what someone else is telling you without first understanding what the project is and understanding what the value of the job is” About Eli Smith Eli founded and runs successful businesses in construction and real estate development. This episode we have a departure from academia; a different approach to the creation and transmission of knowledge. We interview Eli Smith, Traditional Music Consultant for Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption 2. In our first COVID-19 recording (you may hear some sirens), we discuss the American music archive both as living tradition and recording technology, and the ways in which these interface with the virtual space of a digital game. Eli is a folk singer, banjo player and guitarist who grew up in New York's Greenwich Village. Smith has recorded for Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and regularly performs as a solo musician and with the string band the Down Hill Strugglers http://elismithmusic.blogspot.com/ “Keywords in Play” is an interview series about game research supported by Critical Distance and the Digital Games Research Association. As a joint venture, “Keywords in Play” expands Critical Distance's commitment to innovative writing and research about games while using a conversational style to bring new and diverse scholarship to a wider audience. Our goal is to highlight the work of graduate students, early career researchers and scholars from under-represented groups, backgrounds and regions. The primary inspiration comes from sociologist and critic Raymond Williams. In the Preface to his book Keywords: a vocabulary of culture and society, Williams envisaged not a static dictionary but an interactive document, encouraging readers to populate blank pages with their own keywords, notes and amendments. “Keywords in Play” follows Williams in affirming that “The significance is in the selection”, and works towards diversifying the critical terms with which we describe games and game culture. In today's episode, we feature our guests, Eli Smith, the son of a Black Panther, following two weeks of racial tension and protest across America. After the death of Mr. George Floyd, I thought this would be the great episode to follow considering that Eli Smith, a black business owner has not only built one successful business, but he's built multiple successful businesses across the country. And he's changing the idea of what people view Black Americans as in terms of their success and in terms of what we can accomplish despite all obstacles, Eli Smith, ESmith, Contractors, SGTR. He is now also in spite of everything, building his own development in Syracuse, New York, where it was formerly a waste site. I hope that you enjoy today's episode. As we transform the minds of people, we share with him the story of how he found his partner and how various programs help change his life and shape who he is. On top of all that we talk about race, because again, this is the time that we're dealing with and the situation at hand. This may be difficult for some people to hear, but it is a candid conversation. And I think that it needs to be heard. Mr. Smith talks about how, when he started his company cleaning out basements in New York, the only people that would work for him were people of color, were felons or people who needed sometimes second, third, and fourth chances. I think we all could use an extra chance. Hope you enjoyed today's episode.

You're listening to Unsubscribe! Today we talk with one of demandDrive's Team Leads, Eli Smith, about bridging the gap between upper management and the SDR team - specifically in regards to communication and managing expectations. As someone who has an “extensive reputation of being a leading demand generator, (seriously, his words haha)” Eli is the perfect person to talk to about this. His role as a team lead bridges both the management and SDR team, and he has the best interest of both parties at heart. Facilitating that transparency and making sure all sides are on the same page is key, and according to Eli: “There's not a lot of instances where a lack of visibility helps.” We couldn't agree more! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Cairns is the main project of Milwaukee musician, John Larkin, who debuted his initial recordings in 2015. The newest release, Entanglement, is Cairns’ debut full-length with a full band. While performed and recorded by mostly Larkin, himself, he added contributions from other Milwaukee musicians to fill out the soundscape – Caley Conway, Eli Smith, Eddie Chapman, Sam Pekarske and Joe Kirschling are now also part of the live ensemble. Layered and expansive, Entanglement masks its complex time signatures and rhythms with layers of meticulous sound and dynamic swells through every track and nearly every song features drastic stylistic changes throughout. No two moments carry the same weight. This release marks significant development in the complexity of Cairns’ sound and Larkin’s songwriting. Its name is derived from the phenomenon of quantum entanglement, befitting of the direction the project has taken. Self-described as a psychedelic chamber ensemble for the disobedient and melancholic youth, Milwaukee’s SOCIAL CATERPILLAR—a five-piece project composed of Kyle Smith on guitar and vocals, Eli Smith on Bass, Eric Ash on Violin, K-Rad on Cello, and Whisper Crystal on drums—has been playing and recording a unique style of music together since 2016. Following their debut EP, Welcome to the Petting Zoo, SOCIAL CATERPILLAR have since released a split cassette with fellow Milwaukee artists SNAG titled A Dying Emperor Within a Dying Empire in December, 2017. Their latest work, Motorcycle in Three Movements (to be released on July 13th) is a collaboration with the Denver-based soundscape collective UTAJAHS and the band will embark on a two-week tour in support of the album beginning July 20th. In its acronymic form, S.O.C.I.A.L C.A.T.E.R.P.I.L.L.A.R, as the band often reminds their audience, means “Striving Onward Collectively and Illegally Against the Law Cosmic Art Terminates Every Relation of Power Instantly Limitless Love Amongst Rebellion”. The Down Hill Strugglers is a string band composed of Eli Smith, Walker Shepard and Jackson Lynch, who play at various times; fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin and harmonica. Forming in 2008, they are influenced by the music that came out of rural America, including Appalachian traditions, music from the Deep South, and the Western States. They combine the feeling of the old music that can be heard on commercially recorded 78 RPM records (largely of the pre-WWII era) and field recordings made throughout the 20th century. They have been playing together for five years and have performed at the Newport Folk Festival, the Kennedy Center, the Library of Congress, the Brooklyn Folk Festival and many other places. In 2013 they were featured on the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers film, "Inside Llewyn Davis" produced by T-Bone Burnett. - http://downhillstrugglers.blogspot.com In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark original Dave Leatherman performing the traditional tune “Shoutin’ On the Hills,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Cairns began back in early 2013 following the release of a self-titled EP. Back then, the live format was simpler and quieter, staying truer to the bedroom recordings done by John Larkin. The project was originally intended to remain in a simple format – light percussion, sparse acoustic/electric guitar, keyboard – but quickly built into something more aggressive and dynamic, evolving beyond what could be considered a solo project. The latest release, Current, was released in June of 2016. These songs were originally written and recorded by John, but in the process of preparing to perform them live, the songs strayed from the original recordings. This process created something much more organic, influenced by the different perspectives of each member of the group. The latest incarnation features Caley Conway on bass, Eli Smith on drums, Eddie Chapman on electric organ and percussion, and D’amato on bari sax. It’s worth noting that everyone in Cairns has their own project that they actively pursue. Caley and D’amato each have projects under their own names, Eli performs solo as Honeymooners, and Eddie fronts a band called Gauss. Upcoming releases include a pair of collaboratively written songs that were recorded by Kevin Dixon as well as three music videos directed and shot by Sam Kirchoff. These will all be released sometime throughout the summer. Upcoming shows are July 7th at Circle A with Wavvy V; Aug 4 with Har-di-har, JE Sunde, and Bum Alum; and Breadfest, which will be happening mid-August. Tune into WMSE to listen to a live set from Cairns on Tuesday, May 23rd — WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives, or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour.
Honeymooners is the solo project of Eli Smith (previously of Wasted Islands and Lost Spirit). The project started in May of 2012 when he was 16. It began as a solo, acoustic project and has gradually amassed different musical layers since, currently residing at the intersection of experimental music/sound art and more conventionally structured songs. He released his first EP, called Sleepwalking, in August of 2013, a release informed equally by folk/acoustic music and ambient music, and released his first full length album, called Night Beach, in August of 2016, featuring a traditional guitar/bass/drums setup augmented by extensive loops, samples, and field recordings. Smith is currently working on writing the next Honeymooners full-length, likely due for release sometime in 2017.
What is folk music? Spanning genres, geographical locations, and eras in time, it’s the music of the people. Although American folk music has been around for a long time, you could say it had its biggest explosion in the 1960s in Greenwich Village. In fact, New York has experienced a bit of a folk revival in recent years. On today's Please Explain, we're exploring folk music with Eli Smith, the co-founder of the Brooklyn Folk Festival, the banjo player for The Downhill Strugglers and the former co-host of The Down Home Radio Show. Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton, a multi-instrumentalist performing at this year's Brooklyn Folk Festival, joins Eli in the conversation. They'll also perform live in our studio! Event: The Brooklyn Folk Festival will be held at St. Anne’s Church (157 Montague Street between Clinton and Henry) from April 8th-10th. It will feature 35 bands, workshops and events including an old time string band, freedom songs of the Civil Rights Movement, shape note, country blues and international folk music from Syria and Colombia.
