In this episode of Business of Drinks, we sit down with Harmon Skurnik, president of Skurnik Wines & Spirits, one of the most influential importers and distributors in the U.S. With more than $200 million in annual revenue, a wholesale presence in nine states, and import reach across the nation, Skurnik has grown into a powerhouse while holding tight to its roots as a family-run, quality-first business.Unlike many peers, the Skurnik team has never chased scale for scale's sake. Instead, their approach has been defined by thoughtful, organic growth — expanding only when the opportunity was right. From rescuing a struggling Ohio distributor to launching what would become their top-selling brand, The Pinot Project, Harmon shares how Skurnik's strategy has delivered both scale and staying power. In fact, Skurnik's sales were up in 2024, while much of the wine industry contracted — a testament to their effective operations and strategic growth path.In this episode, Harmon shares:How Skurnik Wines & Spirits grew from a two-man operation in NYC to a national player with 270+ employeesWhy they still personally taste every wine and interview every employee — even with operations in nine statesThe story behind The Pinot Project, now their #1 SKU, selling 65,000 cases and $6 million annuallyHow the team turned around a failing Ohio distributor into a thriving business in Ohio, Kentucky, and IndianaWhy the company avoids expansion for expansion's sake, and only grows where it can add true valueHow Skurnik positions itself as a marketing partner, not just a logistics provider, for its suppliersWhat makes a good distributor in today's market — and why asking "how many reps do you have?" misses the pointLast Call: We dig into a provocative piece by cocktail historian and author David Wondrich: “Why Is My Drink So Damn Weird?” (via Punch). Bill and I recorded this podcast the morning of the Super Bowl so good eats and adult beverages were front and center of our discussion. We go on a jag about the lack of places to find good bread in Sonoma County and come up with a pretty good impromptu list of great places to eat in Sonoma County. So if you have any plans to come to wine county there are lots of good tips in this podcast. Thanks to everyone for listening. Cheers! Our wine recommendation this week is the 2019 Poggio Scalette Chianti Classico. Poggio Scalette (hill of tiny steps) is a small property in the Greve municipality of Chianti Classico and is run by the Fiore family. Initially started by wine consultant Vittorio Fiore who's name is prominently displayed on the front label the property is now run by his son Jurij. The top wine at Poggio Scalette is Il Carbonaione a 100% Sangiovese which sells for about $50 retail. Today we will be focusing on Il Carbonaione's sibling or Scalette's second wine a Chianti Classico. The vineyards for this bottling sit at an average elevation of 1,500 feet and were planted between 1928 - 2003. The grapes are 100% Sangiovese di Lamole, an ancient clone of Sangiovese and are fermented in concrete vats and aged for ten months in concrete before bottling. Medium ruby color going clear to the edge in the glass. Pretty red fruit and floral aromas complement the cranberry, sour cherry profile on the palate. Medium bodied and mildly tannic with zippy acidity the wine is refreshing and laid back. It shows great drinkability and I immediately went digging into the wine stash to see how many I had on hand ( always a good sign ). I was delighted to discover that the Poggio Scalette Chianti Classico clocked in at 13% abv. Which means I can have more than two glasses in one sitting if I desire without having to worry about overindulging. The drinking window for this wine is short and its probably best enjoyed in the near term. It would pair well with a variety of appetizers, light main dishes, pasta and pizza. $19 Buy it here.Show Links:French government floats €160m fund to ease ‘wine crisis'How product placement gets wine bottles into shows like ‘The Last of Us'Gallo is laying off 355 employeesWhy one of Sonoma's best wineries hired a winemaker who'd never made wine before Deadly Wildfires Devastate Vineyards in Chile's Central and Southern Wine RegionsThe Uncertain Future of Island WinesLuca and Elena Currado Vietti say goodbye to the Vietti winery

Although organizations that had held back on hiring have finally opened their gates. It's far from perfect. Kevin feels that there are both pros and cons to this intense phase of transformation. The biggest pro is that it allows you to attract amazing new talent, and the main con is that you lose stellar talent to your competitors. However, he believes in being courteous and respectful to an employees' choice of resignation.2. How does RootMetrics manage the personal and professional aspirations of its employees?RootMetrics provides two paths to growth for its employees: a management tech ladder and a technical tech ladder. The organization encourages its engineering talent to embrace management opportunities when they hire contractors for projects. Kevin says that managing contractors helps engineers to hone their management skills. Moreover, sharing their own work-life and technological experiences with contractors is a good growth opportunity. For example, how they code, how they develop code, organizations, and more. 3. Tech leaders on the challenges managing teams: why managing teams doesn't come easy to everyone.Kevin believes that the choice largely depends from person to person. Typically, most engineers perceive the change from an individual contributor to a team manager as a drastic change of career track. He says that if you consider your job as a long-term endeavor, then you must embrace the managerial side of the engineering profession. Leading a team as a manager provides you with the opportunity to manage your team's coding as well as learn from their skills, and elevate your career. Overall, developing managerial skills is important to build a holistic engineering career. Lastly, seeing your team grow in their role is a very fulfilling experience as a manager.Follow Kevin on LinkedIn, Twitter & Instagram Produced by: Priya Bhatt Podcast host: Abhash Kumar
Lavanya Gandi combines a career in sales, account management and human resources—including working with giants like Amazon, Swiggy, Zomato, and IPAC—with a relentlessly curious brain for a perspective that captures both the big picture and the nitty-gritty details of what it takes to champion the client and employee relationships and career progression. She currently brings that expertise to Dextara Digital as the Director of Human Resources, and in this conversation with us, she shares:How she found her calling to be an HRCritical Strategies to prepare for the future of HR and workWays to support a better work-life balance for your employeesWhy she still loves and talks about the culture of her previous employer, ZomatoThe work culture of Zomato:Zomato has always made a point to hire the right talent. The organization ensures the perfect culture fit for all the employees. It prefers hiring people who believe in the values of Zomato before being a part of the team. The compassion and acceptance Zomato shows is cherished by Lavanya. The company even attempted to find jobs for people who had to be laid off due to the pandemic.Remote work and its impact on the work-life balance:Lavanya's current organization is quite flexible and open. They do require employees to be in the office. Lavanya further talks about the work-life balance blurred due to remote work. There are employees desperate to work from the office as they are used to it. However, people are adjusting to this new way of work now. Employees often face the stress of managing multiple things at one go. With remote work, the boundary of not reaching out to people apart from working hours is removed. Here is where the mental health implications come into the picture. Lavanya advises leaders to avoid these conversations. She further says that employees should “pick up habits that don't confine to a screen or technology.”People should not be taken for granted. The problem also persisted during the beginning of the lockdown. Plenty of people didn't find a reason to take leaves. They would continue focusing on work every day. But some organizations realized the need to solve this. People need to take time-offs to refresh themselves. Constant work can make them monotonous. Advice to the founders/ people managers:Leaders need to learn to be more flexible and adaptable to situations, considering how the pandemic changed everything. Policies had to be reframed due to the changes in the way of work. They need to be empathetic towards their employees and focus on upskilling them. They should organize engagement programs for the employees for something different from what they are working on. Employees of similar interests (books, music, etc.) can also create clubs and interact.Follow Lavanya on LinkedInProduced by: Priya BhattPodcast host: Junius DsilvaGet the highlights of this episode from our blog.BONUS: Here is The One-place Guide to HR Challenges and Solutions to gain in-depth knowledge about Human Resources and its challenges.
