Where Wedding Florists Actually Lose Money

The Floral Hustle

A $15,000 wedding does not automatically make you more money than a $6,000 wedding. In fact, it is completely possible to book a large event, work yourself into the ground, and walk away with almost nothing if you are not paying attention to where your profit is leaking. In this episode, Jeni breaks down the anatomy of a profitable wedding from the initial inquiry all the way through final cleanup. She starts with one of the most important questions: is this wedding actually a good financial fit in the first place?A beautiful vision means nothing if the budget does not support it. A large invoice can quickly become unprofitable when the venue is difficult, teardown is complicated, travel is extensive, the timeline requires an oversized team, or the scope of work is far beyond what was actually priced.Jeni also explains why pricing needs to come from reality—not hope.Your client is not only paying for flowers. They are paying for your expertise, design, logistics, team, problem solving, sourcing, transportation, setup, teardown, admin time, overhead, and your ability to make the event happen when things inevitably go sideways. From there, Jeni walks through some of the biggest profit leaks in floral businesses, including overbuying, overly complicated recipes, labor creep, poor prep, freelancer inefficiency, excessive tweaking, underestimated logistics, and unpaid owner labor. She also shares how strategic design can improve both profitability and visual impact. Profitable design is not about making things cheap. It is about using creativity, mechanics, styling, repurposing, rentals, negative space, candles, linens, and focal moments intentionally.Jeni also dives into the real cost of repurposing, the profit potential of rentals, delivery and setup fees, teardown, hidden supply costs, and all the hours of work that happen before wedding week even begins. Finally, she explains why every florist should complete a post-wedding profitability review and ask whether the wedding was actually worth doing.Because profitability is not only about money. It is also about whether the stress, energy, and time required were worth what the business received in return. In this episode, Jeni talks about:Why not every dollar of revenue is equally profitableHow to determine whether a client's vision and budget are actually alignedWhy difficult venues and unrealistic timelines should affect pricingHow florists accidentally work for free on large eventsWhy pricing needs to include far more than flower costsThe real value of your expertise and problem-solving abilityHow overbuying turns profit into compostWhy complicated recipes can increase both product and labor costsHow labor creep silently destroys marginsWhy your own labor is never freeUsing an effective hourly rate to evaluate how you spend your timeHow strategic design can create more visual impact with less wasteWhen repurposing actually saves money—and when it does notHow rentals can become a profitable revenue streamWhy delivery and setup should never be an afterthoughtWhy teardown needs to be priced separatelyThe small supply costs that quietly add up across a wedding seasonWhy pre-wedding admin and design time must be accounted forHow to compare estimated costs with actual costsWhy post-wedding profitability reviews help you improve every eventThe five-part profitability frameworkPriceDid you charge enough for everything required?PurchaseDid you buy strategically and stay within your recipe and budget?ProduceDid you and your team work efficiently?PerformDid delivery, setup, logistics, and teardown stay within expectations?PostmortemDid you review what actually happened so the next wedding becomes more profitable?Questions to ask after every weddingWas this wedding worth doing?Would I book another wedding like this?Would I work at this venue again? What was the most profitable part?Where did my margin disappear? What should I charge differently next time? What process needs to change?Did I actually enjoy doing it?Was the stress commensurate with the money?Key takeawayA big invoice does not guarantee a profitable wedding.Profit is protected through dozens of decisions before, during, and after the event.Know your numbers. Protect your labor. Buy strategically. Price logistics correctly. Review what actually happened. Then get 1% better on the next one.Mentioned in this episodeThe Floral CEO Mastermindhttp://floralceo.com/mastermind

#317: We've been taught that getting fit has to be hard (hour-long workouts, all-or-nothing routines, the "perfect" plan). But what if that's exactly what's keeping us from being consistent? Josie sits down with fitness creator and founder of GG Studio, Gabby George, whose viral Bridal Arms workouts have helped millions of women rethink what fitness can look like. After overcoming her own struggles with body image and learning to stop using exercise as punishment, Gabby built a philosophy around one simple idea: the best workout is the one you'll actually do. Josie and Gabby break down how just 5-10 minutes of movement can transform your health, the pressure of the "bridal glow-up," how to feel your best before a big event without obsessing over changing your body, and the small habits that actually move the needle when it comes to feeling stronger, healthier, and more confident. You'll learn:Why consistency matters more than intensity for resultsThe biggest mistake people make when starting a fitness routineHow 5-minute workouts can build real resultsThe truth about "bridal glow-ups"What you should (and shouldn't) focus on before a big eventThe underrated wellness habits that actually make the biggest impactHow to make exercise fit into your life instead of rearranging your life around exerciseUse code "THEEVERYGIRL15" for 15% your order from Anima Mundi Herbals! For Detailed Show Notes visit theeverygirlpodcast.com Hosted on Acast. 307. 3 Ways to Boost Enrollment This Month

You don't need a bigger ad budget to fill your classrooms this month. You need a plan you can actually execute in the next 30 days, and that is exactly what I'm walking you through in this episode.Right now, you're probably in one of two camps. Maybe enrollment is humming along, you've got a waitlist, and you just raised tuition again. Or maybe you're in a season where things feel harder. Parent retention has dipped, you've had a wave of families leave, or you just opened two new classrooms after an acquisition or a hiring spree and you need those seats filled to hit the profit margin you're working toward.Wherever you land, this episode is for you, because every leader benefits from knowing how to move fast when enrollment needs to move. Here's the distinction I want you to sit with first: there's a short-term plan and a long-term plan, and most schools only ever build one or the other. Ads, a new website, an SEO strategy, these are long-term visibility plays. It takes weeks to get the right creative, the right targeting, the right cost per lead down. Building a website that actually drives traffic is a two to three month process. That work matters, but it will not put a family in your door by the end of this month. So today, we're playing short-term. Three strategies you can start this week that get real families walking through your doors before the month is out. What You'll Learn:Why ads and a new website are long-term plays, and what actually moves the needle in 30 daysHow to run an open house that turns strangers into enrolled families, not just a nice eventThe exact way to “work the room” so every conversation moves a parent closer to signing upHow to run a parent working roundtable that turns your current families into an active referral engineWhy personalized incentives outperform generic ones every timeHow to turn everyday errands, like the gym or a nearby apartment building, into enrollment opportunitiesWhat “ethical eavesdropping” is and how it can shape your long-term marketing strategyConnect With Us:Join us on Substack: https://chaniewilschanski.substack.com/

Homeowners insurance prices are up a whopping 24% since 2022. One in seven homeowners now has no insurance at all. In some parts of the country, companies aren't just raising rates -- they're refusing to write policies. Bob Litterman co-created the Black-Litterman model that the financial industry still uses to price risk, spent 23 years running risk at Goldman Sachs, and now chairs the Coalition for an Insurable Future. He joins Joe and OG on a special Thursday episode to explain what's actually happening, why it's not going to stop, and what you can do about it right now. What You'll Walk Away WithWhy the insurance market breaks down when probabilities stop being stable -- and how billion-dollar weather events went from three per year in the 1980s to 23 per year todayThe domino chain: how rising insurance costs in one ZIP code can drive down home values, freeze bank lending, shrink local businesses, and quietly hollow out an entire communityWhy this isn't 2008 -- and the one important way it's actually worse than what the mortgage crisis taught usWhy one in seven homeowners now carries no insurance at all -- and what that means for the next major weather eventThe 100-year flood problem: why homes built to withstand a once-in-a-century event are now getting hit every five to ten yearsWhat first-time homebuyers should ask that their realtor almost certainly won't bring up -- and why the insurance question is now as important as the mortgage rateHow to actually read your renewal letter: what to look for beyond the premium, what hidden changes insurance companies are legally required to disclose, and why your deductible may have quietly doubledOG's Claude trick: how he uploaded both his old and new policy documents, asked for the differences, and found actionable savings plus a jewelry rider gap he didn't know he hadWhy Bob says the real mispricing isn't in the insurance market -- it's in the pollution market -- and what that means for how this eventually gets resolvedThe risk management reframe: why thinking about insurance is the wrong starting point, and what to think about insteadWhy This Matters NowThis isn't an inflation blip. The risk is genuinely increasing, the models are being rewritten in real time, and the insurance companies pulling out of markets are the canary in the coal mine. The good news: there are specific things you can do right now -- at your house, with your policy, and in how you think about risk -- that most homeowners haven't done yet. From the BasementBob Litterman joins Joe and OG on a special Thursday episode to walk through the home insurance crisis from the inside -- the pricing models, the domino chain, the reinsurance squeeze, and the difference between a tail event and the slow-moving sea level rise underneath it. OG's takeaway: upload both your old and new policy to Claude and ask it to find the differences before your next renewal. We've all been to one: loud music, people huddled in clicks, and little to no guidance from the host. I'm talking about poorly run networking events. The kind of events that spike the anxiety of us introverts and solo attendees. But nobody wants to throw a bad event. The host wants to make sure everyone is having a good time and leaves having made meaningful connections. The problem is that nobody taught us how to throw a great networking party. That was until Nick Gray wrote The 2-Hour Cocktail Party, a step-by-step handbook that teaches you how to build big relationships by hosting small gatherings.Nick is a firm believer that hosting these simple, lightweight gatherings will accelerate your network. And he's given us the playbook for how to do just that.In this conversation, we cover how to make sure people show up, 4 secrets for hosting a great event, and how to politely kick people out at the end of your party. Nick also gives me an answer for the perfect number of attendees and the best day of the week to host your networking party. And actually, since this recording, I've been to two cocktail parties that used Nick's book to host their event, and they have both been far superior to the typical networking events. But they weren't flashy events with paid bartenders, catering, and a DJ, no they were well-run events and a great use of my time. I met a lot of incredible people and left feeling excited to continue those conversations. If you want to expand your network and know how to throw a simple yet amazing networking event, this is the episode for you.Key Takeaways:Why hosting consistent, small gatherings is the ultimate networking toolNICK: 4 secrets for hosting a great eventThe importance of name tags even when you know everyone at the eventHow to run icebreakers and an easy example to use at your eventWhy you shouldn't host dinner partiesThe perfect number of attendees to haveHow to politely kick people outThe perfect day of the week to host your networking partyNick's recommendation for event-hosting platformsHow to ensure people show up to your partyWhen to send and what to include in your reminder communicationMentions:Nick's event hosting platform recommendations: Partiful (https://partiful.com/) and Mixily (https://www.mixily.com/)More of Nick:The 2-Hour Cocktail Party: How to Build Big Relationships with Small Gatherings: https://www.amazon.com/2-Hour-Cocktail-Party-Relationships-Gatherings-ebook/dp/B0B2KW6T7JTwitter: https://twitter.com/nickgraynewsMore of The Struggle is Real:Find show notes and more at https://www.tsirpodcast.com/Follow us on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/tsirpod/
