Man Amongst Men
How Money Effects Our Masculinity feat. Teri Kelley

Man Amongst Men

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 23, 2020 57:00

In my 20s, I went out on a first date with a woman who asked me a question I’d never been posed before: “How would you handle being with a woman who made more money than you?” To highlight how un-woke I was at the time, I was caught flat-footed and without words because in all honesty: The thought had never crossed my mind. Part of that was because I was in financial services, in a big job and making more money than most people I knew…especially people my age. But on a deeper, subconscious level, I’d always just assumed that I would be the breadwinner in any romantic relationship. Not just assumed it, I felt it was my duty – my obligation. And then I started to wonder “where the hell did that belief come from?” Fairly quickly I came up with some answers: My father was the breadwinner in our family while my mother made the choice to stay at home Every movie or tv show I’d ever seen portrayed a man’s role as financial provider as essential to his masculinity Every movie or tv show I’d ever seen where a man didn’t make money, he was portrayed as less than a man (he was fumbling through life, women didn’t want him, other men ridiculed him) And yet, in real life, I was surrounded by amazing female friends, bosses and coworkers who were crushing it financially. How had I failed to see this? How had I failed to upgrade my operating system? This wake-up call from my date kickstarted an inquiry into my beliefs around money and how those beliefs had shaped my masculine identity. It made me think back to previous dinner dates where my date picked up the check, and I would feel a wave of blood rush to my face – preempting the oncoming humiliation – of being witnessed by everyone else at the restaurant as a man who couldn’t pay the tab for his woman. I knew this thinking was antiquated, but it was so deeply ingrained in my DNA that I couldn’t override the feelings of shame that would accompany the situation. I’ve come a long way these last 15 years in unraveling that unconscious programming. Even though I’m still the one picking up most of the dinner tabs, I love it when a date offers to treat me. I genuinely experience it as a gift, and I enjoy it if other people witness her gesture of kindness. Today, I lead deep inner work discussions with both men’s and women’s groups alike, exposing blind spots of our unconscious programming – like money and masculinity – that prevent us from connecting with one another…and from feeling that deep sense of inner security that we all crave. So today, I’m bringing on a very special guest - and financial expert - who has a bird’s eye view of how unconscious masculine belief systems play out in money and relationship matters: My dear friend Teri Kelley. Who is Teri Kelley Teri is a Senior Vice President and Financial Advisor at Morgan Stanley Earlier this year, she was named by Forbes as one of the Top-10 women wealth advisors in the state of Arizona In 2019, Teri hired me to do 4 months of deep, intensive coaching after suffering a massive panic attack after burning herself out…so we worked on breaking her free from drift and taking back her life on her terms Through that, we developed a deep bond and friendship that gets stronger by this day In her work as a financial advisor, she oversees clients with assets ranging from $2m to $30m…and has a unique perspective in how unconscious gender dynamics play out in some not so great ways when it comes to money In this Episode Why so many male/female relationships fail – or experience untenable tension – when the woman earns more You’ll explore whether your self-identity requires you to be the financial provider in your romantic relationship…or if you’re ok with being a partner that provides in non-financial ways What happens when couples don’t reckon with these unconscious gender roles when it comes to financial dynamics Why you still may feel emasculated when your partner makes more than you, even when you know better, and how to upgrade that Teri also addresses the question of “how do I know when I should hire a financial advisor vs. going at it on my own?” Resources: The Automatic Millionaire by David Bach: https://amzn.to/36VUeJI

Welcome to another Q&A episode! This time I’m going to answer your questions about using the copper IUD, whether it’s safe to eat phytochemicals, what strategies you can implement to deal with period pain, and more. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode121. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Why the copper IUD is safe Some of the side effects of using the copper IUD Eating soy and phytoestrogens How your menstrual cycle affects your bowel movement Healing the gut What causes dysmenorrhea and how to deal with it   Key Takeaways: The copper IUD is a small t-shaped device that your gynecologist would insert into your uterus through the cervix. It’s non-hormonal so it may be your best choice. It’s 99.2% effective for up to 10 years. With copper IUD, there have been a significant number of women who have found they have really painful periods as a side effect, and sometimes longer periods with heavy bleeding. There’s also an increased chance of bacterial vaginosis when using the copper IU because of the disruption in the vaginal microbiome. There’s a slightly increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease as well. Xenoestrogens are one of the most abundant endocrine disruptors that mimic estrogen. They are found in tons of different types of chemical products. Phytoestrogens are natural xenoestrogens derived from plants. They are able to bind to estrogen receptors. Soy and flax seeds are the biggest and most well-known phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are much weaker than your own estrogen or any synthetic estrogen. Depending on your individual biology and natural hormone levels, they can have an estrogenic effect or even an anti-estrogenic effect. So when they bind to your estrogen receptors, they can block more potent estrogens from binding instead. This is a good thing for some women because it will reduce symptoms of estrogen dominance. Organic soy consumed in small amounts has been shown to reduce estrogen dominance in some women. For others, even a modest amount of soy might be too much and can lead to significant menstrual problems like longer cycles, heavier periods, and more cramping. Dysmenorrhea can be caused by the following: Endometriosis Benign tumors found in the female pelvis Ovarian cysts Using the copper IUD   Action Step: Consider using the copper IUD instead of the pill or a hormonal contraceptive. Tune in to your body when you decide to take phytoestrogens and be conscious of its effects. Experiment with food and see what works for your body. Just pay attention symptomatically how you feel. Be conscious of how you’re taking care of the gut and what you’re eating.   Samantha said: “It’s not necessarily just about the food. It’s more about the food and the woman -- how is that food specifically working with you -- because it’s not a one size fits all when it comes to hormonal health.” “If your menstruation is intense, heavy, and uncomfortable, and even if you’re fine the rest of the month, still, it shouldn’t be something that is that intense and uncomfortable where it’s totally knocking you out and you’re crying in pain.”   Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements: Don’t forget to connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie. “From a very early age, men learn that performance is the only thing that matters.” – Dr. Michael Addis   So what happens to a man’s inner world when he isn’t performing?   As it turns out, it’s quite a bit of a mystery…not only to the outside world, but to the man himself.   Living a life where performance is the only metric, it doesn’t leave a lot of space for inner exploration, developing emotional fluency or going deep with other men about their inner lives.   Living a life this way leads to a variety of maladies, like: Chronic anxiety (both low and high grade) Depression Numbed out existence Compulsive or addictive behaviors Feeling isolated, alone or not understood Or at the very least, feeling confused about why your life doesn’t feel better   Fellas, we’ve all experienced some form of what I just mentioned…but even when we recognize it, we typically keep on plowing ahead…on our own…living that life of quiet desperation…until something breaks so badly that we’re forced to do something about it.   But if you’re waiting for a calamity to hit you before taking meaningful action in your life, then how in command of your life are you really?   Today’s conversation is about making the space to speak about the unspoken realities of men’s inner worlds…   …so we can live powerful lives of our own design, on purpose and with other men doing the same.     Our guide for the discussion today is Dr. Michael Addis.   Who is Dr. Addis? Addis is a Professor of Psychology at Clark University where’s he’s been teaching a course in mental health for over 20 years His research focuses on men’s mental health, specifically the way men experience, express and respond to problems in their lives…as well as how men define and relate to the concept of masculinity He’s a multiple time author, with books such as Invisible Men: Men’s Inner Lives and the Consequences of Silence and The Psychology of Men in Context He’s also a coach to men who want to optimize their inner worlds, and I’ve linked his email in the show notes   In this Episode Why most men really do want to talk about their inner worlds…but the conditions for doing so need to be right (and how to create those conditions) Why masculinity is not something inherent or born with, rather it’s become this performance – a series of actions men take to protect and maintain their man card Why the larger the group of men, the more likely “masculinity as a performance” will emerge between men How to look out for “Masculinity Traps” – which are those places where men going into performance, jockeying and competition The two most dangerous words that can leave a man’s mouth when you ask him how he’s doing Two options Dr Addis proposes to reclaim and define what masculinity means to you     Resources Referenced by Dr. Addis The Mask You Live In Documentary Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies: https://www.abct.org/Home/ Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders: https://www.bu.edu/card/     Contact Dr. Addis for Personal Coaching Email: maddis@clarku.edu

Frankly, I was struggling in finishing this episode with all the negative thoughts I have, not to mention the pandemic and these couple of weeks that there is a lot of going on with the black lives matter movement. This is a contradiction to everyone listening especially to those who are in pain that they might think that the work that I do doesn't work. How am I experiencing heartbreak in an ideal relationship anyway?  I have my not-so-great-Claire moments with my partner that I feel like I don't deserve him. After digging deep, this thought all boils down to my past experiences where I was used to being rejected and unloved, and then there's this guy who would just wrap his arms around me, forgives, and accepts me when I snapped. This hit me with unnerving shame and guilt because my brain is not used to being loved despite my flaws. It thinks that this is impossible. Talk about how my brain is choosing to selectively forget that part and looking for the next shoe to drop because it is not used to these heavenly and amazing moments. But, I finally realize that this boils down to not spending time in gratitude and appreciation for how far I've come. All I want of you is to know your worth. There's no exception to the rule, you will still feel heartbroken regardless of having your ideal partner or not, or your dream job or not. Being a heartbreak coach doesn't exempt me either. How to Change the Past

Past experiences shape who we are. We, humans, spend an incredible amount of time reliving our pasts and forming narratives that, consciously or unconsciously, can begin to dictate how we think of ourselves and how we show up in the world. But the truth is, you likely have some stories about your past that aren't serving you – that are, instead, keeping you from owning who you are NOW and rocking the hell out of this one precious life.Today, we’re going to talk about your past and how to change it.For many of you, this may be the most important work you do in your life. Because far too often, we base our entire identities on our past experiences. All those things we regret. All those things we feel victimized by.We spend a lot of time with those memories – those thoughts – of the past.In turn, this influences how we experience the present moment – and how we create our future. What is the past, anyway? The “past” as we experience it now is a thought – a thought about what happened. We feel like our thoughts about the past aren’t optional – that they are just recollections of facts. We don’t think we have a choice about how we think of the past. This is why, when we spend all our time perseverating about the past, we keep living the same life over and over. We keep repeating the same patterns. But actually, we get to remember our experiences however we want to.Does this mean that all those traumatic events in our childhood didn’t happen? F*ck no. Of course, they did. Does this mean that all that work we did to heal and overcome them and move forward somehow becomes minimized by not giving them as much brainpower? Never. But our interpretation of those facts – the STORY we tell about them – THAT’S optional. Ultimately, our thoughts create our results.Using myself as an example, I could choose to tell myself the story of how hard my life was because I grew up poor and in a violent, gang-ridden neighborhood, with a mother who abused me, a mentally ill father who gave away all our money whenever we might have had any, and because I was raped at 16 years old. And I could use all that to have a big ol’ justified pity party for myself. But instead, I choose to tell a story of triumph and how I am the true heroine of my own life. (you can hear more about that on the podcast).I want to encourage you to use your past in a way that actually serves your present. Because believe it or not, our brains can only be in one place at a time – right now.To create a DIFFERENT future, you need to create new thoughts. Choose new thoughts. When we are mindful and aware of our thoughts about our past, we can choose thoughts that help us show up as better humans in the world. It is possible to rise from the ashes - I’m living PROOF.And to do so, the story you tell about all that past stuff has to change.Your PAST does not define you. YOU get to define you.Topics in this Episode:Why our thoughts about the past can keep us from living our lives to the fullestHow to use your past in a way that actually serves your presentWhy our identity is tied to our story of our past – and how to change thisTips on embracing what I refer to as “practical” emptinessWhy my past suffering helped me develop grit, start my business, and ride out the ups and downs of abusive internet trolls and hate letters. How you can come up with the new thoughts about your past + ways to really start practicing these new thoughts, instead of defaulting to old ways of thinkingChanging your narrative – the reason you should get curious about why a past experience happened for you, instead of to you**Please note that the content of this episode does not apply in the same way to people with a diagnosis of PTSD or severe trauma or other mental illness which continues to impact their daily functioning capacity – that’s out of the scope of what I’m referring to. Are you struggling with any digestive issues that could be affecting your hormones and overall health? Former opera singer turned nutritionist and gut expert Alyssa Labrecque is on the show to talk about beating IBS and other gut issues, and how you can optimize your gut health. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode108 Topics Discussed in this Episode: Why gut health is important Why you might be experiencing digestive issues and when do you need to start worrying about them What gut maintenance looks like Why maintaining your minerals is important How the gut is connected to your hormones and hormonal imbalances The symptoms of SIBO and how you might get it The Low FODMAP Diet What to look for when purchasing probiotics   Key Takeaways: You should be pooping two to three times per day. You should be pooping in quantity from your elbow to your wrist every single day. You can carry up to 20 pounds of poop in your colon, and if you’re not eliminating all that poop, that’s going to affect not only your gut but also your hormone health. Maintenance of your gut has to happen, otherwise, gut issues will start to snowball and affect other bodily systems. When it comes to gut issues, mineral deficiencies can have a big role in the symptoms that you’re experiencing. Hormonal imbalances are a symptom and we need to understand what’s causing them to happen in the first place. Otherwise, we’re just managing the symptom and we’re not preventing or reversing a health issue or regaining quality of life. If there’s a hormone imbalance going on, there’s usually a bacterial imbalance. Action Steps: Make sure to maintain your good bacteria, your enzymes, and the integrity of your gut, i.e. preventing leaky gut from occurring. Get your mineral levels tested and see what minerals you need.   Alyssa said: “It’s incredible to see what some of our daily habits or how some of our daily habits might be impacting us.” “Supplementing is important but also understanding how can I ensure that I’m absorbing these nutrients that I’m depleted in.”   Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements:  Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie. This episode is inspired by a recent conversation I had with someone who said that they have been listening to this podcast for a while now, and they are picking up what I’m putting down. However, they’re struggling with the idea that “It’s just a thought”.  If you’ve been listening to this podcast for a while, you know that I use Brooke Castillo’s thought model, and that your thoughts create actions, which create results. And it’s true that some of our thoughts feel very painful and very real. I myself went through very painful thoughts after my rock bottom heart break. However, over time, committing to the work, and working with my coach, I know that it is just a thought.  When you are struggling, look at the facts of the matter, and look at your thoughts around those facts. No thoughts are permanent. And by committing to doing this work, self-coaching, and working with a coach, you’ll be able to recognize what is true and what isn’t. Why We Tolerate and How to Stop

We have this one, precious human life...at least in this body, on this miraculous planet, with these unique whacky people in our community around us.Yet too many of us spend this amazing opportunity tolerating things that no longer serve us.We tolerate our limiting mindsets, behaviors, and situations that no longer serve our highest good. We tolerate our negative self-talk, the soul-sucking job, the “good enough” relationship, the toxic friends, the lover that’s just not that into us. We tolerate our unhealthy habits like not exercising when we say we will, not meditating as often as we’d like, emotional eating, or overdrinking (which used to be my personal favorite) and over-Netflixing (my current favorite). And because how we do anything is how we do everything, we are more likely to tolerate the sexist comment made to our colleague by the boss, or the racist remark we overhear at the dinner party, or the crappy healthcare system. Why do we do this? It’s actually really odd, because humans are not built to tolerate. On the contrary, we are built to be brave and to go out into the world and evolve and make a difference. We want to feel we are making the most of life and our potential. We crave a life of freedom, adventure, and purpose. We all have that Universal source within us - our Buddha nature  - and we want to realize it. In fact, it can be a big source of suffering when we don’t. While our nature is to want to evolve, there’s a problem we encounter while trying to  tap into our highest potential - and it’s called OUR BRAIN. Its primitive parts want to keep us safe so we survive. It wants us to stay very, very safe and not do anything to rock the boat. Which is quite handy...until it’s not.Because not tolerating means taking risks and potentially feeling awkward. Or embarrassed. Or even humiliated or disliked. Evolution requires going into the unknown, being willing to adventure and not know what the outcome will be with any certainty. To live a life of no regrets means choosing to rebel against the nature of our primitive brain, and tap into our highest self.We need to rebel against our old mindsets and the stories that no longer serve us. We need to rebel against conventional thinking that says to be happy you have to change what’s on the outside. We need to rebel against the notion that we are not powerful enough to make a difference. We need YOU to stop tolerating, and to discover your power and live your truth.Topics in this episodeWhy we tolerate things in our life that no longer serve usHow your brain contributes to tolerating BSWhy we make the same mistakes over and over - and why I know you are not brokenHow my cancer helped me stop tolerating - and how you should not wait for something like cancer to stop it yourselfDiscomfort and why we need to learn how to feel anythingTips for how to manage your mind so you STOP toleratingWhat is ziji and why you MUST have itResources:Grab my free Unshakeable Confidence training at www.UnshakeableConfidenceCourse.comHow to Set Boundaries That Actually Work: https://www.anaverzone.com/how-to-set-boundaries-that-actually-work/

How can you reclaim your hormone health and have a healthy period? Creator and author of Fix Your Period, Nicole Jardim, shares how to effectively address a wide variety of period problems by using evidence-based information. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode102. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Why the birth control pill is detrimental to your health The non-hormonal birth control options What it means to have a healthy period What your period can tell you about your health Why ovulation is important Period cramps and what an irregular cycle might mean Myths and misconceptions around your period What an optimal diet looks like for supporting hormonal health and your cycle   Key Takeaways: The goal of any hormonal birth control is to stop you from ovulating. However, what we fail to realize is that stopping ovulation for any length of time can be detrimental to our overall health.  The birth control pill is referred to as the lifestyle drug. It’s been used not just to prevent pregnancy but to address lifestyle issues like period-related problems and even acne. A healthy menstrual cycle is 25 to 35 days long. If it’s below 25 days, it tends to mean you have too short of a luteal phase or it’s associated with heavier, longer periods and more blood clots. If it’s longer than 35 days, it’s usually associated with polycystic ovary syndrome or another condition that’s causing you to not ovulate consistently. Your period should be fluctuating by only 2 or 3 days every cycle. This means that you’re ovulating regularly each month. Ideally, your period should be somewhere between 3 and 7 days. If you spot for a day or two before your period, that’s okay, but anything longer than that could signify a lower progesterone state in many cases. If you eat something that doesn’t agree with your metabolism or your body, your blood sugar is going to go way higher than it should.   Action Steps: Tune in to your body and improve your body literacy. Get off the birth control pill and make the switch to non-hormonal birth control. Know the basics of a healthy period. Track your cycle. Don’t over-complicate your diet. Get back to the basics and keep it simple.   Nicole said: “Our hormones are all talking to each other all day long through the endocrine glands and the endocrine system, so if we’re just focused on one hormone, first of all, we don’t even know why that hormone is out of whack in the first place…” “We can’t out-supplement a bad diet. We can’t out-supplement a lifestyle that is not sustainable, that is not suitable for our overall health.” Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements:The Metabolic Reset program is now ON SALE! Hello everyone! On today’s episode, I talk about a topic key to achieving your health goals: motivation.  Motivation is what can keep us committed to a healthy lifestyle day-in and day-out, especially during challenging times in our lives when stress and anxiety may tempt us to simply give up. Because of this, today I share with listeners three questions they can ask themselves to better understand their own motivations and share with them the common themes I’ve found in my own clients’ answers to these same questions.    The first question I encourage listeners to think about is: What is your Big Why? This question encourages you to think about your reason for wanting to change your health. More so than just “wanting to lose weight,” the answer to this question should be meaningful and compelling so that it can drive you to stay invested in moving towards your goals. For my own clients, they found that their Big Why was most impactful when it was driven by true emotion or would lead to a life-changing outcome. While our Big Whys may evolve over time, being able to identity it is the first step to locking in your personal motivation.   The second question listeners should ask themselves is: What do you think about to stay focused daily? The key to staying focused is planning. By planning ahead and trusting in the plan, my clients have had success with preventing themselves from getting trapped in negative mindsets and instead set habits that they know will work and give them results.   The third question I pose to listeners is: When you get discouraged, what do you do or tell yourself that helps? Many of my clients offer their own personal mantras and solutions to this obstacle, many of them citing their return to the assurance that one mistake or slip-up doesn’t define them and can always be corrected in the next meal.    By reflecting on these questions in your own life and taking the time to identify and interrogate your answers, you can better sharpen your motivation and use it to inspire you throughout your health journey, even on the most difficult of days.    What You’ll Learn in Today’s Episode: Why your Big Why needs to be deep and meaningful and go beyond simply wanting to lose weight Why emotionally-charged motivations can be the strongest motivations Some mantras and affirmations others use to get them through difficult moments in their health journey Strategies for staying focused daily when it comes to achieving your health goals Helpful Links: I’m currently taking on new clients for one-on-one coaching. Justin Huhn: Fundamentals for an Epic Uranium Bull Market Stacking Up

Justin discusses why he finds the uranium market to be compelling, particularly as a contrarian investor. Uranium is driven through long-term contracts with nuclear utilities and those contract prices tend to be higher than current spot prices. Investors tend to watch the spot price since it is updated frequently; however, volume in the spot market is typically quite low. Utilities tend to renew contracts during specific periods when prices are moving higher. Justin explains how the SWU price is essentially the cost of the enrichment process. Centrifuges are expensive and difficult to shut down, so instead, they are usually continuously operated, which can create excess supply. Uranium is a very different market, and during the last bull market, there was a period of supply disruption that resulted in additional contracts being renewed. Today there is a developing structural supply deficit between what is being mined and consumed. The market is steadily growing, with new reactors coming online in over a dozen countries. This is all leading to a robust outlook for the latter part of this decade. Section 232 established a working group on uranium, and their recommendations are still pending. Also, concerns are surrounding the possibility of mine closures due to coronavirus. KazAtomProm’s strategy has changed, resulting in less downward pressure on prices. They have been very good at sticking to their word. They remain the lowest cost producer in the world and have numerous agreements with various countries and utilities. Currently, they are mining at a minimal level sufficient to fulfill their contracts. Lastly, Justin outlines what to look for in a responsible uranium producer and why few companies meet his criteria. Time Stamp References: 0:40 - How Justin became interested in uranium 2:00 - Spot price versus long-term contracts. 6:20 - SWU Pricing explanation. 9:40 - How this bull market will be different. 13:30 - Section 232 and pending proposals. 16:30 - KazAtomProm and their new approach. 18:40 - Assessing management teams. 21:30 - Appia Energy and rare earth metals. 24:30 - Nuclear energy information resources. 25:20 - Resourceful connections on Twitter. 27:40 - Overall picture short-mid term. Talking Points From This Week's Episode • Why uranium is a compelling contrarian investment. • Spot price versus long-term contracting pricing • Underfeeding and supply. • Structural deficits and mine shutdowns. • KazAtomProm strategy and market effects. Justin has been researching the uranium market for the past four years and has thousands of hours of research under his belt. He has been trading the markets for close to a decade, having learned to invest with technical trading - more specifically, trend-following. He was taught by a long-time veteran momentum trader who took him under his wing. This combination of in-depth fundamental analysis in the uranium sector and experience with technical analysis gave birth to the Uranium Insider Pro newsletter. Justin is a passionate educator who cares deeply about bringing value to others, in the investing world and otherwise. He brings a unique, caring dedication to his clients and associates. Uranium Insider has been an incredible experience of community, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share and grow with his subscribers and fellow contrarian investors.

How To Stop Wanting Him Back

What's so wrong with asking how your ex-boyfriend thinks or how those unavailable men think? Simple. It does not matter anymore! Get a grip and focused on your healing, on how you should change your mindset to attract Mr. Available into your life. Instead of wasting time with those men, why not put your time into use by creating positive vibes to attract a person who is for you. Remember, your thoughts create your reality. A woman who can think for herself, and put herself on the pedestal, will completely attract the ideal person, who will be a perfect fit for her. I never say that it's going to be easy for us to move through the harsh realities of failures, especially relationships. But it also takes courage to accept frailties and learn from it and become a better version of yourself. Just get over and done with all the BS in your life. The person who can infuriate you is yourself.I am so excited to have my friend Jamie McKeown, back on the podcast to have this conversation.
