Training Tips From Susan: How To Train Your Dog To Leave It With No Command: Susan Garrett's ItsYerChoice

Message From Susan Hey everyone, it's Susan, and you're about to hear one of my training tips and tidbits. These are quick, actionable strategies to help you and your dog in everyday life or for dog sport. Often our short videos with tips are created from your most popular segments of podcast episodes. So, let's dive in!   Training Tips from Susan: How to Train Your Dog to Leave It with No Command: Susan Garrett's ItsYerChoice There are many reasons to train your dog to “leave it” on command. Your puppy or dog might be grabbing scraps off the ground when you are out walking, raiding the garbage, stealing food off the table or counter. It's not safe for your dog, and it is frustrating for you. The downside of training “leave it” on command is that you'll have to be there to say it to your dog for life. And perhaps one day your dog is off the lead, away from you, can't hear your “leave it” and grabs something that is life-threatening. What I like to do is teach my dogs to leave things alone by making it their choice. It all starts with a game I call ItsYerChoice because it teaches dogs to make the choices we want them to make. It removes the need for us to always be micromanaging what our dogs are doing. The ItsYerChoice game will even help your dog make great choices in the face of big distractions. You'll be able to get your dog's attention just by saying your dog's name, or any word you want to use. I've got a demonstration of how it looks in the foundation stages here in this video with my dog Momentum. ItsYerChoice has not only worked for me; it's worked for tens of thousands of my students and their dogs of all ages, breeds, shapes and sizes and backgrounds. You can join us to learn one simple dog training game that will change your dog's approach to distractions and release you from needing to say “leave it” and nagging your dog many times a day: https://recallers.com/iycsummit-join When you join in, you and your puppy or dog will receive a free 20 minute training video and a step by step Play Book to help your dog get control over distractions. My foundation game teaches dogs HOW to make great choices to ‘leave' food / toys / distractions. This is DIFFERENT! And because it's a game, it's fun, and we all learn best when we are having fun. Looking forward to coaching you on how to get your dog to leave it because that is what your dog chooses to do. Join me to learn how IYC can change your life with your dog: See you soon!  https://recallers.com/y/iyc

It's a protocol involving conditioning, capturing and shaping your dog's behavior to create calm in key moments. The ability to cue relaxation is valuable for ALL dogs, not just those who are hyper or anxious. In fact, we all have personal relaxation protocols, and in this episode, I'm sharing what I frequently use for myself and my dogs to settle down.   In the episode you'll hear:   • Why every dog should have a protocol for relaxation regardless of temperament. • About common triggers for relaxation and ones I use for my dogs. • How to help anxious or over aroused dogs with intentional calming mannerisms. • My breathing technique for triggering the parasympathetic nervous system to counter stress. • How to induce a calm state for dogs step-by-step. • Why we play ItsYerChoice to help dogs relax. • How to positively condition your dog's relaxation trigger. • My capturing technique and tips when dogs are in their “chill zones”. • When to begin shaping and adding a calm release word. • How to assess your dog's emotional state with TEMP and an app. • About using a remote feeder to add duration to the chill zone. Visit us at shapedbydog.com  There are two ways to work on your dog listening around distractions, but many people only learn one. The first way is to get your dog into a controlled position like a sit or down, and introduce distractions. We take it to the next level and do things differently! Let's face it; there are not too many bunnies who are doing to ask us to get our dogs into a sit before they run across the path. We need our dogs to listen no matter what and no matter how far away they are from us, and the timing of our distractions in training is critical to set our dogs up for success.   In the episode you'll hear: • About the two reasons a dog would listen at a distance. • The way we grow massive confidence in our dog's ability to listen. • About looking at what you do if your dog makes a mistake. • How games grow responses and enthusiasm for dogs. • What playing video games has to do with dog training. • The importance of controlling the distraction and not the dog. • About growing a dog's skills in layers and the fun way to practice. • How to really use distractions in your dog training. • Why you always want to be on Team Distraction to get to Team Distance. • What to play with your dog this week in prep for next-level listening games. Visit us at shapedbydog.com    How well does your dog respond to your cues at a distance? Would your dog sit or down when they are off leash and far away? It's a skill that can be life saving for dogs! It only needs a few minutes a day of engagement with your dog to create great behaviors, and it starts with your dog listening to you when they are close.   In the episode you'll hear:   • That a dog responding from a distance is just showing mastery of skills that they can do close up. • How to find time in your day to train your dog and how it can be engaging. • What your dog understanding of a cue looks like in day-to-day life. • About cleaning up your release cues and the releases that I use. • What to be aware of about cueing, marking, and releasing to create clarity for your dog. • Why we need transfer of value to the behaviour of sit, down or stand for our dogs. • About the experiment we conducted at agility camp and what the results showed about cues at a distance. • Why dogs who understand a behaviour close to you can perform at a distance.   Resources:   1. 2021, the year of people before politics and public health diplomacy before bureaucracy- TAF Founder. Today we conduct trial 1 of the first ever Public Health Diplomacy experiment in TAF International Organization. This experiment is scientific, social and medical diplomacy related. * imagine a random case scenario where 4 random people are placed in a room that could be the size of a normal room or the size of a conference hall. Size of the room is hereby deemed irrelevant in this experiment and hence an experimental “control” factor. Person 1(John Doe, male)- has been vaccinated against covid-19 with the best vaccine available in the market right now. Person 2( Jane Doe, female)- Does not know anything about her medical history, but seems to be fine. Person 3( Jane Doe, female)- has survived covid-19 after testing and quarantine. Person 4( John Doe, male)- has had covid-19 symptoms at least twice since the pandemic started. This person has been tested and vaccinated but seems to be having side effects. These people in a different age group, race, health status and financial status. When this experiment ends we will need to a social & economic solution, a scientific solution and a diplomatic solution to each individual person's case. Today Mr. President(IYC) and Madam Speaker( TAF International Organization) discuss the public health , education and sustainable development in the Republic of Austria and the Portuguese Republic respectively. Visit us at shapedbydog.com    The inspiration for this episode comes from a walk with my dogs. My puppy, This!, was on leash, and my adult dogs were milling about freely. All of a sudden, a large bunny crossed our path 5 meters ahead. My adult dogs did not really notice the rabbit as it was the equivalent of white noise for them. For my puppy, it was a LOUD noise, a siren, she for sure noticed! Is it that my puppy just does not get my training, or is it that she has just started her education?   In the episode you'll hear:   • My checklist of 5 items to include in your training to ensure your dog gets it. • The layers of learning that I put into my dog training and for my students. • What our layers of learning are from Kindergarten through to University and beyond. • Why our dogs need a structured educational program. • The reason we don’t control our dog but look at the environment. • What I do instead of saying “Leave It!” to my dogs. • All the things that I teach my dogs to help dim the loud noises like bunnies or cats. • Why to progress your dog’s decision making, so decisions become bigger and better. • What I do that is different to old-school dog training programs. • The importance of congruency and consistency. • Reasons why some dogs just don’t get it, including fear and a dog’s purpose. • How structured building blocks create transformation and confidence. • Why we want an engaged, safe environment that encourages learning. • About balancing success with challenges and the relationship with dopamine. • Why rehearsals of success lead to successful performances.   Resources:   • Podcast Episode 59: Why Your Treats Aren’t Working for Your Dog-https://dogsthat.com/podcast/59/ • Game: Learn How to Play ItsYerChoice (IYC)-https://recallers.com/iycsummit-join/ • Crate Games Online-https://get.crategames.com/ • Podcast Episode 6: The Art of Manipulation-https://dogsthat.com/podcast/6/ • Video: How to Train Your Dog to Leave It with No Command-https://youtu.be/GGJkfrMje2k • Home School the Dog-https://dogsthat.com/home-school/ • Recallers-https://recallers.com/ • Handling360-https://dogsthat.com/handling360/ • Blog: Distraction Work in Dog Training: A Conversation Between Friends-https://susangarrettdogagility.com/2012/02/distraction-work-in-dog-training-a-conversation-between-friends/ • Vlog: Where Is Your Dog on the Circle of Fun?-https://susangarrettdogagility.com/2018/07/circle-of-fun/ • Podcast Episode 56: 5 Simple Questions to Guide Your Dog Training-https://dogsthat.com/podcast/56/ • Watch on YouTube - https://youtu.be/xyTWqhA21ZE

Jokes Languages A mother mouse and her three children crept out of their hole into the kitchen and began feasting on some delicious bits of food. Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye, Mother Mouse saw a cat slinking toward them. The cat was between the mice and their hole. The mother muse puffed up her lungs and went, "Woof! Woof!" The cat turned tail and ran. With that, the mother quickly led her children back to safety in their hole. When they were settle and breathing normally, Mother Mouse said to her children. "Now, what's the lesson from that experience?" "We don't know," the baby mice squeaked. "It is this," said Mother Mouse. "It's always good to know a second language."
