It's Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and Jason Statham in the most boring of heist gangs ever, in this 2003 F Gary Gray directed Oceans 11 knock-off: The Italian Job. Jon & I sum up F. Gary Gray's work on music videos, action packed movies, superbowl commercials and other produced side gigs. How does he rank as both a reliable blockbuster filmmaker and as a progressive filmmaker? Is he too flashy for his own good or does he actually put the MTV edits to the side and rely on more well-thought out storyboarded segments? And more dissecting of a key filmmaker's career! Everyone just calm down. We can talk this through... Because we watched the 1998 F Gary Gray film The Negotiator and are hyped up on pop psychology! Joined by good friend, comedian and organizer Maurice Weeks (@mo87mo87) we discuss this tense Samuel L Jackson thriller. A hostage negotiator takes people hostage?! To prove his innocence?! AND HE'S BLACK?! This movie is full of miracles.
This was an intense one. Full of so many emotions and ups and downs throughout. I'm so glad I watched this film with fresh eyes, it has been at least 20 years. I hope more people out there will watch and realize the magic that is, Set It Off from '96. We get into many different points of this story and how the performances by all four leads should have gotten all the awards. Me and Charles also talk interesting behind the scenes info, I obsess about the fashion, and we get into the social commentary that is still relevant 26 years later.--- Get OVER 60 BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show, join the PATREON for $5 a month! www.patreon.com/fashiongrungeGIVE US A 5 STAR RATING & SUBSCRIBE!Hosts: Lauren @lauren_melanie & Charles @charleshaslamMusic by Den-Mate @imdenmateFollow Fashion Grunge Podcast Instagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

On this week’s Director Spotlight episode, we discuss the films of F. Gary Gray. The spectrum is wide when it comes to the quality of each of his movies, but when he crushes it, he really really crushes it. Some of his movies are some the most rewatchable ones I have in my collection, while others I hope I never have to see again. So sit back as we break down the the highs and lows of F. Gary Gray. Enjoy!

Welcome back where the analysis is fresh and trash is good. Your favorite movie analysis podcast is back to talk F Gary Gray's hostage thriller The Negotiator. Is it a bucket of fun or a bucket of poo? You'll have to tune in to find out our thoughts on this 1998 action flick. But first, we have to play a game. This week, we talk about our favorite "Wrong Men". Arthur thought he had written and closed the book on the subject, but Alex comes in at the last second with arguably one of the better "Wrong Man" characters. As the analysis gets underway, Arthur presents a formalist/genre reading of The Negotiator. He examines how F Gary Gray utilizes the editing, camera and production design to infuse a sense of urgency into a substandard procedural story. Dalton is next. He presents a look at beurocracy and the thin line that is constantly walked by those in the criminal justice system. He connects these dots to beurocracy on a more general scale. Alex piggybacks off of Dalton's reading in presenting her ideas. She reiterates the strength of Dalton's points, before aligning these points with current political affairs. Alex brings up how America's distrust in government has grown. She is brimming with ideas from her recent OK Policy Summit. Dustin takes things home by discussing the myth of redemptive violence. He examines how violence in this form is used to control people. Dustin then compares the approach of both Spacy and Jackson's characters in the film. Well that's it for this week, Dear Listener. Now, if you're ready, go ahead and hit play. And remember, you never tell the hostage taker, "No." The Negotiator Timestamps 00:38 - Welcome and Introductions05:27 - Synopsis and Reviews15:19 - The Game - Favorite Wrong Men22:44 - Social Media24:01 - Analysis50:01 - Shelf or Trash/Else or Instead57:35 - Wrap Up

On tonight’s edition of Scottscope Talk Radio, the Roundtable reviews Straight Outta Compton! Is it as good as the hype suggests? Could it be F. Gary Gray’s best film to date? Might it be the best Hip-Hop biopic released thus far? Does it offer the real story of the villains in Black, or a diluted and sanitized version? Is it more of a hagiopic than a biopic? Does the direct involvement of Dr. Dre and Ice Cube compromise the integrity of the final product? Should biopics be expected to tell the undisputed truth about their subjects? Does the film offer a fair and balanced portrait of Jerry Heller and Marion “Suge” Knight? Does it properly capture the popular zeitgeist of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s? Can it be considered a feature length hate latter to police officers nationwide?
