We've had other guests on in the past who have unveiled never-before-heard history of the herb, but nothing comes close to the secrets revealed in this episode.Blackleaf finally hunted down the elusive Todd McCormick, an American activist, childhood cancer survivor, author, and medical herb patient for a once-in-a-lifetime conversation. Todd has a laundry list of achievements and sightings in pop culture dating back to the late 80s. More recently, he's been an ongoing judge at the yearly Emerald Cup in NorCal and was one of the winners of the Cannabis Culture Award in 2012. You may have also seen him speak on screen during the 2007 documentary, The Union: The Business Behind Getting High. There are no stones left unturned in this episode, as Todd recalls his famous 1997 arrest where he was caught with over 2,100 plants at a Bel-Air mansion and never snitching on any of his constituents, subsequently serving a 5-year sentence as a result, and getting bailed out by DJ Pooh and Boondocks creator, Aaron McGruder. You'll also hear about the famous Playboy Mansion parties that he used to attend as well as host in the name of herbal activism. It's impossible to stuff all of the insane stories Todd tells into one description, as well as all of the celebrities that he's befriended over the years. But, some names that will come up along the way include his close friends Hugh Hefner, Bill Maher, Dave Matthews, Tommy Chong, Mel Frank, Andy Dick, Joe Rogan, and so many more. You'll even get to hear the legends of Skunk strain creator Skunkman Sam and Northern Lights strain creator, Seattle Greg.In the realm of valuable knowledge, Todd riffs gems left and right throughout this pod. He weighs in on the global expansion of herb, its origins in Afghanistan and the Greater Middle East, how to perfectly pop a seed, why classic strains are dying out, and the origin of the war on drugs via the alcohol industry.Take your time to really go through this episode and soak up all of the crazy stories and wisdom from the unsung hero of herb, Todd McCormick, who's been growing for over 40 years and sharing their mission of normalizing herbal consumption at places like Woodstock ‘99, where he wound up giving a 40-minute opening speech.Find all of Todd's current genetic work showcased through his brand, Authentic Genetics Seed Company, agseedsco.com.Subscribe to our channel and the FSOTD.com site to keep up with other key players and enjoy conversations with tastemakers from the culture you can't find anywhere else. Jason Teasley and Mark Radulich present their The Friday Trilogy Movie Review. Friday is a stoner comedy film franchise created by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh. The series takes place in South Central Los Angeles and follows the exploits of perpetually unemployed Craig Jones, who, along with his friends and relatives, is thrust into various issues that happen to occur on a Friday.Three films have been released. The first film, Friday (1995), was a sleeper hit and has garnered a large cult following. The film's success led to two sequels, Next Friday (2000) and Friday After Next (2002), which were also box office successes. A short-lived animated series based on the films debuted in 2007 on MTV2 and lasted 8 episodes.Friday is a 1995 American buddy comedy film directed by F. Gary Gray and written by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh. The first installment in the Friday trilogy, the film stars Ice Cube, Chris Tucker, Nia Long, Tiny "Zeus" Lister Jr., Regina King, Anna Maria Horsford, Bernie Mac, and John Witherspoon. Set in South Central Los Angeles, it follows unemployed friends Craig Jones and Smokey, who face troubles after becoming indebted to a local drug dealer while also contending with the neighborhood bully.Friday was theatrically released in the United States on April 26, 1995. Joining Taplines today is Jacinta Howard, a veteran culture and music writer and editor in Atlanta, to talk about a very specific, very special, and very star-studded "sponsored content" series that hit the airwaves back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, long before "sponsored content" was even a thing. St. Ides malt liquor first arrived on store shelves in 1987, but it wasn't until the brand's parent company hired the iconic DJ Pooh to enlist a who's-who of blue-chip rappers — from Ice Cube to the Wu-Tang Clan — in the production of original mixtapes and music videos about the “Crooked I” that it began to take off. And when it did, sales followed — but so did the controversy that would eventually bring St. Ides' breakout #sponcon project to an end. Don't forget to like, review, and subscribe! Hosted on Acast. We celebrate John Witherspoon and Chris Tucker's comedy highlights, the authenticity of Regina King's hair journey, and the intimidating, yet hilarious encounters our leads have with the antagonists, Big Worm (Faizon Love) and Deebo (Tiny "Zeus" Lister Jr.) Ice Cube and DJ Pooh rocked the culture with this film and we are all the funnier for it! Personally, DJ Pooh was one of my biggest inspirations as a producer in the 1980s. Additionally, his career clearly showcases that he is one of the most intriguing, creative, and diverse producers of his time. His work as a producer (and in some cases as a DJ) with King Tee, Deadly Threat, Nefertiti, Ice Cube, LL Cool J, Del The Funkee Homosapien, Ultramagnetic MCs, Dogg Pound, Snoop, Too Short, Breeze of L.A. Posse, Run-DMC, Yo-Yo, Mixmaster Spade, 2Pac, and more, illustrates a resume that easily cements that point. And, his history as a producer is only a part of what he has accomplished in his amazing career. Also, super shout out to King Tee, who I am a big fan of, and it was his music that initially led to me hearing DJ Pooh.

B. Cox reviews Ice Cube's third album The Predator as it turns 30. In the midst of the one most prolific and successful runs in hip-hop history stretching back his days as with NWA, the soon-to-be West Coast icon created and released his album in the time of transition of turmoil. Hip-Hop acclaim and recognition was beginning to spread its sphere of influence out to the West Coast. to mirror this rise in the commercial success of West Coast hip-hop was great angst. The album was completed in the heat of the aftermath of the Rodney King verdict, which sparked the now infamous 1992 L.A. riots, further fueling political and racial tensions. Not to be dismayed, Cube pressed on to continue his holy trinity of LPs, combining yet again with longtime collaborator Sir Jinx and also new production teammates in DJ Pooh and DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill. Over hard hitting and consistent production filled in with cuts of news footage and commentary that reflected times, he packaged the perfect combination of lyrics that reflected his political mindstate amidst the turmoil, told gangsta tales and told stories of what life like was in like in black Los Angeles. The album was critically acclaimed and was certified double platinum and featured two Cube standout singles: "Check Yourself" and the classic "It Was A Good Day", which has garnered the respect and adulation of hip-hop fans 30 years after its release.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesAlbumism: Ice Cube's 'The Predator' Turns 30 | Anniversary Retrospectivehttps://albumism.com/features/ice-cube-the-predator-album-anniversaryBrooklyn Radio: #30thAnniversary: Ice Cube "The Predator" http://brooklynradio.com/30thanniversary-ice-cube-the-predator/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

For the second episode in a row, Gingerdead Man (starring Gary Busey) finds its way into our conversation. “Roadie Friday” is the day before the day off on tour. Friday is a state of mind. TGI Fridays was a really revolutionary idea when it first came about. The premise was that it was a bar that women would feel comfortable visiting. The bar in the movie Cocktail where Tom Cruise recites poetry is based on TGI Fridays. Freaky Fridays are when you switch bodies with your parent. Freya is the mother of Thor and Friday is named for her the way Thursday is named for him. Here's DJ Pooh running and crying. Def Comedy Jam was a show on HBO where urban comedians could perform. The most famous set ever was probably Bernie Mac's first appearance but Chris Tucker's was really good too.  Phil was wrong here, there is no "other Chris Tucker". Deebo Samuel plays football for the San Francisco 49ers. Deebo is not his legal name but he confirms that it came from the movie Friday. We note how great Friday's soundtrack is, with songs like “Keep Their Heads Ringin” by Dr. Dre, “Friday” by Ice Cube & “Hoochie Mama” by 2 Live Crew. Jake compares Friday to two of his favorite books Cannery Row & Tortilla Flat (both by John Steinbeck). He also compares it to his new favorite TV show to insist everyone watch: Blindspotting (it's on Starz so you'll have to get a promotional subscription and binge the show within a month). Other songs discussed include “Little Saint Nick” by The Beach Boys, “American Pie” by Don McLean & “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick. Jason sincerely apologizes for unknowingly dead-naming Cara Cunningham. Here's the 2021 hyperpop remix of “Friday” featuring Big Freedia and others. "Friday" wasn't the easiest episode to record, but it's one of our new favorites. After Big D recovered from his Strawberry Festival-induced hospitalization, the Shat Crew convened to debate whether certified stars like Chris Tucker, John Witherspoon, Regina King, "Tiny" Lister, Bernie Mac, and Michael Clarke Duncan could elevate a Zig-Zag-thin plot to a '90s comedy classic. In this episode, we discuss how Ice Cube and DJ Pooh succeeded in their mission to show a different side of the 'hood, how weed helped Big D "make it a Blockbuster night," and why it sometimes pays to party in dangerous places. Big D implores today's youth to "live in the moment" as we also cover the bathroom habits of POC, why Ash can't shower alone, "the conditions" in Atlanta, and terrible fight scenes.  SUBSCRIBEAndroid: https://shatpod.com/android Apple: https://shatpod.com/apple All: https://shatpod.com/subscribe CONTACTEmail: hosts@shatpod.com Website: https://shatpod.com/movies Leave a Voicemail: Web: https://shatpod.com/voicemail Leave a Voicemail: Call: (914) 719-7428 SUPPORT THE PODCASTDonate or Commission: https://shatpod.com/support Shop Merchandise: https://shatpod.com/shop Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

Personally, DJ Pooh was one of my biggest inspirations as a producer in the 1980s. Additionally, his career clearly showcases that he is one of the most intriguing, creative, and diverse producers of his time. His work as a producer (and in some cases as a DJ) with King Tee, Deadly Threat, Nefertiti, Ice Cube, LL Cool J, Del The Funkee Homosapien, Ultramagnetic MC's, Dogg Pound, Snoop, Too Short, Breeze of L.A. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/storiesaboutsongs/support

"I’m about to show you who the real puff daddy is!” When Ice Cube started up his own production company, CubeVision, it made sense to jump back to the first film that he wrote, Friday, to make a sequel. After all, most sequels are guaranteed to earn back a part of what their predecessors made. But Chris Tucker had become a born-again Christian and didn’t want to be in this type of movie anymore and DJ Pooh, his co-writer, was off directing his own first movie. That didn’t stop Cube, who pushed forward anyway, taking his character Craig to the suburbs for new adventures and more marijuana. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our series looking at the Friday franchise with Steve Carr’s 2000 film Next Friday. We talk about what we loved so much about the first film and why this film feels like a disappointment following that one. We look at specific characters and story beats with the film that exemplify why this film is problematic and what Cube, Carr and Co. could have done differently to make this one shine. We talk about various beats and characters that work really well for us, again further laying out what Cube did well here versus what he didn’t. We chat about Carr’s background and how he came to land this film, as well as Tucker’s reasons for not joining on. And we look at actors in this film who did great stuff, even if the material is weak. It’s a disappointing sequel that has some of the laughs from the first but doesn’t have any of the heart, and for that, we’re forever disappointed. Still, it makes for a great conversation, so check it out then tune in to this week’s show! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. Ice Cube’s rap career was on fire because of the work he was doing with N.W.A., but after playing Doughboy in John Singleton’s 1991 film Boyz n the Hood, he got the acting bug and wanted to do more films. He talked to N.W.A.’s publicist Patricia Charbonnet, and the two of them came up with the idea of telling a story of life in the hood that wasn’t so dark like Singleton’s film or others like it. With that, Cube and his friend DJ Pooh set to work on the script and Charbonnet cut a deal with New Line Cinema. Cube wanted F. Gary Gray to direct it, who he knew from directing several videos for his group. Victor proudly welcomes one of his favorite people, the incredibly multi-talented Wyann Vaughn. Wyann Vaughn comes from soul music royalty. Daughter of Grammy award winning Wanda Vaughn of the sister group "The Emotions" and Earth, Wind & Fire's "Let's Groove" writer Wayne Vaughn, Wyann mixes timeless R&B vocals with a funky edge.  At eight years old, her brother introduced her to rap music and she hasn't looked back since.  From studios to stages, working with everyone from Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar to The Temptations, Heatwave, The Stylistics and more; Wyann Vaughn possesses vast experience as both a recording and a performing artist by blending hip hop styling with crafty singing and songwriting. As a self-proclaimed "edutainer", Vaughn also struts her stuff with scholarly confidence as she holds her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree and teaches as well as academically counsels at Pasadena City College's Ujima Program.  Outside of carrying on the family legacy by touring with her mother and aunt as the third member of The Emotions, Wyann belongs to the supergroup The Pollyseeds under the direction of Terrace Martin. Vaughn was also hand selected by The Good Doc himself to cohost "The Pharmacy with Dr. Dre" on Apple Music's Beats1 radio alongside west coast hip hop giants like Xzibit, DJ Pooh and others.  Vaughn also launched "Raise It Up, Wy! the podcast" where she kicks "OG game to real ones only" by raising listeners' awareness, vibrations, and capacities for love.   Wyann arguably expresses herself most vividly through poetry. Vaughn developed her love for poetry at 16 years old. Studying Maya Angelou for an eleventh grade AP English course, Wyann presented original poetry alongside Angelou's.The response from her instructor was so overwhelmingly positive and encouraging that Vaughn felt motivated to continue writing and reciting her poetry.  In 2008, she self-published her debut poetry book, entitled 13, and gifted her eleventh grade English instructor the first publicly available copy. Wyann Vaughn's future works, which include more poetry books and even a debut album, promise to capture hearts and touch souls everywhere.

THIS EPISODE IS TOTALLY INEBRIATED! We weren't, NECESSARILY, when we assembled this show in August of the so-called year "2003," but the episode itself is WAY high. The mad audio mutator, Mr. Fernandinande LeMur, was on a real tear then, as were we of the ESO Swamp Radio Show on WCSB in Cleveland. That was Prof. Chas Smith's show, which became the aptly named Brain Rot Radio Theater during the sections with Lonesome Cowboy Dave, Rev. Stang. and Princess Wei. Other arteests represented include DJ Pooh and Mistah Grimm, Lump5, Phineas Narco, Puzzling Evidence Show with Philo Drummond and Dr. Hal, Elvis Hitler, NOFX, Heart Ignition, CD Truth, The Streets, and "jarto." All in all this is one of our nuttier shows. One might be hard pressed to see how this material intersects with a sober subject like "Bob" Dobbs and the Church of the SubGenius.
