We are a month out from the first Feed the Children service date so I'd like to talk about Feed The Children details. See you Tuesday morning! Feed The Children Feed The Children has been serving meals since 2001 when Northwestern Steel and Wire closed. United Way provides grab-and-go meals at 18 sites throughout Whiteside County. Meals feature kid-friendly foods like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, crackers, granola bars, and fruit juice. This program has no registration requirements, and participation is open to all children and teens 18 and under. Everyone is welcome, always. 15%, of Whiteside County children were food insecure, which means they do not know where their next meal is coming from. Summer of 2022 we served 21, 473 meals, a 50% increase over the summer of 2021. Expect another significant increase in the number of meals served in 2023 because of the increasing cost of groceries and the pandemic SNAP benefits ending. This increased demand coupled with less purchasing power and less food availability at the food bank is creating a “perfect storm” for summer 2023 Feed The Children: Volunteers Same location for making meals this summer – St Paul's Church in Sterling at the corner of LeFevre and 16th We are looking for over 500 volunteers to pack and hand out meals this summer Sign ups are live online at: uwwhiteside.org – on the home page under Latest News We also need some specialized help – a truck with a lift gate for food deliveries Feed the Children saw a 50% increase in the number of meals served in 2022. On this episode of Emerging Brands, Carl Howard, Chief Executive Officer of Fazoli's shares his restaurant and franchise experience, Fazoli's double-digit growth and the brand's significant expansion plans. Howard takes us back to his humble beginning as a busboy at Bill Knapps when he was sixteen. He had various roles at restaurants and at age twenty Howard got his first management position at The Elephant Bar. Next he became the general manager at one of his father-in-law's italian restaurants. Eventually Howard moves his way through the ranks at Damon's Grill, he became a franchisee of the restaurant and later became the Chief Executive Officer. Shortly after, Howard had an opportunity to join Fazoli's team in 2008. Howard talks about Fazoli's interesting history that started thirty-three years ago, it's rocky beginning, and how cod played a part in the brand. Today Fazoli's has 215 locations and continues to grow rapidly, they will open fifteen to twenty locations this year. Fazoli's model combined with no franchise fee and zero royalty in year one has contributed to the growth, say's Howard. When Howard began at Fazoli's he took a deep dive into the brand, trying to understand the double-digit decrease. Through changing food, service and technology, Howard quickly turned the brand around. Fazoli's has always had to adapt over the years and during the pandemic, they used analytics to understand what was driving their customers. Fazoli's was able to meet the changing needs of their consumer, and take pride in that every aspect of the brand has been upgraded. Howard says Fazoli's is definitely in the virtual concept business, having three virtual brands Macaroniville, Wingville, and Wow Bao. Be sure to listen to the Emerging Brands Podcast to hear Carl Howard talk about how Fazoli's gives back and the programs in place for taking care of their employees. Howard also shares his personal connection in partnering with Feed The Children.

Featured GuestKamel Shaath was trying to think of a way they could help give back during these hard times. He developed a program that will help business, save the Earth and feed over one million hungry kids. The Junk-A-Juke program will enable businesses to upgrade their older storage systems for free. Many companies are still using old storage equipment (many of which are being "end of lifed" by Dell and HP) and in need of upgrades. These systems can cost into the hundreds of thousands (depending on capacity). Old storage solutions tend to be bulky and are costly to dispose of. As a result, more than 80% end up in landfills.KOM Networks is doing this not only so they can keep the equipment from landfills, but they will break down the systems and sell the components or raw materials (though KOM's recycling partner). The money raised is going to help fight hunger through Feed The Children (www.feedthechildren.org). Businesses of any size can take advantage and they can get rid of any older computer equipment taking up space in closets, server rooms, data centers, etc. They can also write of the recycled costs as charitable giving. KOM arranges the pickup, recycling, and installation of a brand new Dell powered storage/archive solution. This helps businesses with storage needs, the earth and hungry kids at the same time. KOM's goal is to feed one million hungry kids (15 million kids die every year of starvation).
