Today's Headlines: In maybe another Epstein distraction tactic, Trump held a fiery presser to announce he's taking control of DC's police and sending 800 National Guard troops for 30 days — despite crime being at a 30-year low. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser called it “unlawful” and noted Congress could've given her Guard control years ago. Trump also hyped his upcoming Alaska meeting with Putin to discuss “land swaps” for ending the Ukraine war. Zelensky isn't invited, but Trump hinted at a follow-up meeting, while European leaders scramble to meet him first. A judge blocked the DOJ's push to unseal Ghislaine Maxwell grand jury records, calling it a distraction. The US and China extended their tariff truce for 90 days, and the US will now take 15% of Nvidia and AMD's China AI chip sales for export licenses. Australia will recognize a Palestinian state at the UN in September, joining Canada and France. At home, a gunman killed 3 people outside an Austin Target, and explosions at a US Steel plant near Pittsburgh killed 1 and left another missing. Severe storms in the Midwest caused deadly flooding in Milwaukee, shut down the Wisconsin State Fair, and left 14 million people under flood alerts. Forecasters are also tracking tropical storm Erin in the Atlantic and Hurricane Henriette in the Pacific. The market closed marginally lower on Friday ahead of strong technical resistance near the 23,500-point intraday-high mark and renewed concerns over U-S tariff policies. Work and School Cancellations Due to Rain School and work have been cancelled in parts of central Taiwan due to heavy rain and flooding. The Directorate-General of Personnel Administration says all of Chiayi County, as well as Shui-lin Township in Yunlin County will suspend work and classes, as both areas see precipitation through last night. Local officials are reporting flooding along several roadways and homes, up to 30 centimeters high, and hundreds of water pumps (抽水機) have been deployed. Forecasters say more thunderstorms are expected this afternoon, and they are advising the public to be on the lookout for more flooding as well as landslides. (NS) MAC bemoans China's recall comments The Mainland Affairs Council is slamming China's Taiwan Affairs Office for accusing the D-P-P of "political manipulation" and of saying it has lost public support following this past weekend's failed recall votes targeting 24 K-M-T lawmakers. According to the council, Beijing's "lack of democratic experience" means it has no right to comment on, or misinterpret (曲解), Taiwan's democratic system. The council is describing the recall vote as an example of Taiwan's democratic constitutional system and a major democratic achievement by civil society groups. The comments come after China's Taiwan Affairs Office issued a statement saying the D-P-P "has lost popular support and its policies run counter to the true mainstream public opinion in Taiwan." NKorea Rebuffs SKorea Efforts at Ties The influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has rebuffed (回絕) outreach by South Korea's new liberal government, saying that North Korea has no interests in talks with South Korea for whatever proposal its rival offers. It's North Korea's first official statement on the government of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, which took office in early June. In an effort to improve badly frayed ties with North Korea, Lee's government has halted anti-Pyongyang frontline loudspeaker broadcasts, taken steps to ban activists from flying balloons with propaganda leaflets across the border and repatriated North Koreans who were drifted (漂流) south in wooden boats months earlier. Kim Yo Jong called such steps “sincere efforts” but she said the Lee government won't be much different from its predecessors, citing what it calls “their blind trust” to the military alliance with the U.S. and attempt to “stand in confrontation” with North Korea. Arguably, the most important thing we need to do when thinking about the future, is to hold our strong opinions weakly. In the world of business strategy, the process of mapping what may lie ahead is usually tempted by a perfected, tried-and-true, method. So what happens when the forecast is wrong? On this episode of Looking Outside we are exploring the process and purpose of scenario planning, with world leading forecaster, professor and futurist, Paul Saffo. Having helped organizations, governments and future leaders build skills in forecasting for the future for decades, Paul knows better than most how predictions of the future can fail when certainty is the desired outcome. Equally he's seen how people can become entranced with a specific method and obsessed with the accuracy of their predictions. He says instead, when thinking about the future, we should intentionally second guess assumptions, especially, those of so-called subject matter experts. Sometimes, it comes down simply to having a good compass and learning to read the stars.----------More:Looking Outside podcast www.looking-outside.comConnect with host, Jo Lepore on LinkedIn & X & jolepore.comLearn more about Paul Saffo, futurist with a pastFollow Paul on LinkedIn & X & Instagram Check out more of Paul's work with the Long Now Foundation, Singularity University, The Atlantic Council and the Millennium Project----------⭐ Follow & rate the show - it makes a difference!----------Looking Outside is a podcast exploring fresh perspectives of familiar topics. In this wide-ranging and provocative interview, economist and forecaster Martin Armstrong shares dire warnings about the future of global finance, governance, and geopolitics. Armstrong argues that we are headed for a massive economic and governmental collapse by 2032, driven by unsustainable debt, declining confidence in institutions, and a manufactured climate crisis used to justify authoritarian control. He warns that elites are using wars, digital currencies, and manipulated narratives to maintain power while suppressing dissenting forecasts. Armstrong also draws parallels between modern political chaos and historical cycles, highlighting how economic breakdown is often the catalyst for societal transformation. The interview touches on volcanic activity, potential population decline, central bank digital currencies, false flag events, and the dangers of Western interventionism—especially in Ukraine and Europe. About Martin Armstrong Martin Armstrong is a legendary economic forecaster, pro-freedom advocate, and a brilliant observer of history and human nature. Once a US based trillion dollar financial advisor, Martin developed a computer model based on the number pi and other cyclical theories to predict economic turning points with eerie accuracy (he predicted the October 1987 Black Monday crash to the very day and the Russian financial collapse in 1998). In the early 80's he established his financial forecasting and advising company Princeton Economics. His forecasts were in great demand worldwide. As Armstrong's recognition grew, prominent New York bankers invited him to join “The Club” to aid them in market manipulation. Martin repeatedly refused he was put in a cage for over ten years (see 2014's documentary “The Forecaster” – . Learn more about Martin here:  Website Link:

He says it's a major problem things like medicine and semiconductors aren't made in America. Lutnick said the tariffs will stay in place as President Trump seeks to reset global trade.    And number three ---- Millions of acres of national forests, including a sizeable portion in Michigan, could be cleared for timber production in a bid to reduce wildfire risk. That's according to a new U.S. Department of Agriculture plan. The Department of Agriculture couldn't specify how many acres would be affected in Michigan. The state is home to about 2.9 million acres of national forest lands.

Show Notes: Robert de Neufville dropped out of grad school after spending over a decade in grad school and not finishing his PhD. This was around the time of the financial crisis. Robert realized that after a decade in academia he was less employable than when he graduated from Harvard. He had done a lot of teaching at Berkeley and San Francisco State, but found himself struggling to find a job. He eventually moved to Hawaii to work freelance editing projects. He moved there because he had a friend who wanted to rent out his house. Working as a Forecaster and Political Writer Currently, Robert is working as a forecaster and political writer. He has a sub-stack newsletter called Telling the Future, which has about 1500 subscribers. While he is not particularly happy writing about politics right now, he believes it's necessary for his career and personal growth. Therapy and Political Theory Robert discusses their first period after college and therapy. He mentions the stigma surrounding therapy and the importance of normalizing it. However, he eventually reached a breaking point. He didn't know what he wanted to do after college. He drove to New York and worked at several different places, including consulting and Booz and Allen, which he ultimately found lacked meaning and decided to pursue a more intellectual career. He knew that he liked thinking and writing about things, so he applied to grad school for political science, where he studied political theory and moral issues related to community living. However, he found the academic culture at Berkeley to be toxic and, combined with an unhealthy lifestyle, he decided it was not for him.  Robert touches on his difficult childhood, which was characterized by narcissistic parents and abusive mother. He eventually sought therapy and found that he felt better, but struggled to complete his dissertation. He dropped out of grad school, despite their professors' concerns, and was diagnosed with chronic PTSD. Finding Solace in Teaching Robert found solace in teaching, but disliked the part where he had to grade students. Some people had unhealthy relationships with grades, and he felt he had to refer them to suicide watch. He realized that teaching was great because it allowed them to understand a topic better by explaining it to others. He found that teaching was the only way they could truly understand a topic, but he realized he didn't want to do academic work. Additionally, he found that there was a backlog of people who wanted to become political theory professors who spend their time teaching adjuncts and spending money on conferences and job opportunities. Robert believes that his experience in grad school was intellectually rewarding and that his training and political theory shaped who he is. Writing for Love and Money Robert  talks about his experience writing for mainstream publications like The Economist, National Interest, California magazine, The Big Think, and The Washington Monthly. He shares his struggles with freelance writing, as he finds it slow and fussy, and finds it frustrating to be paid for work that takes time to complete. He also discusses his writing about forecasting, becoming a skilled judgmental forecaster. He makes money by producing forecasts for various organizations, which is a relatively new field. He encourages readers to support writers they love and consider paying for their work, as it is hard and not very rewarding. Forecasting Methods and Examples The conversation turns to Robert's writing and forecasting. He explains his approach to forecasting and how he uses history to guide his predictions. He shares his method of estimating the probability of events in the future, which involves looking back at similar elections and establishing a base rate. This helps in estimating the probability of what is going to happen in a specific situation. Robert also mentions that there are some situations that require more analytical thinking, such as discovering AGI or other technologies. He talks about The Phil Tetlock project, a government agency that helped invent the internet, aimed to determine if anyone could forecast geopolitical questions. The research showed that people were terrible at it, even analysts and pundits. However, a certain percentage of people consistently outperformed intelligence analysts using methodical extrapolations. Robert participated in the tournament and qualified as a super forecaster in his first year. He works with Metaculus and the Good Judgment Project, which produces probabilistic forecasts for decision-makers. The forecasting community is now working on making forecasts useful, such as understanding the reasons behind people's forecasts rather than just the number they produce. Influential Harvard Courses and Professors Robert stresses that he found his interaction with fellow students to be most enriching, and he appreciated Stanley Hoffmann's class on Ethics and International relations, which was taught through a humanist lens and emphasized the importance of morality. He also enjoyed watching the list of movies and reading academic articles alongside his classes, which eventually informed his teaching. He also mentions Adrienne Kennedy's playwriting class, which he found exciting and engaging. He enjoys table reads and reading people's plays fresh off the presses and believes that these experiences have shaped his forecasting skills. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. If you want an ad-free experience, you can subscribe below underneath the show description.A recent AP survey found that 80% of Americans report having experienced “extreme weather” over the last five years, though no definition of the term was provided, therefore leaving the question open to highly subjective answers. The report, as a result, found proof of this in the fact that responses were separated by political party lines: 90% of Democrats see this weather as caused by Climate Change while only 43% of Republicans said the same. Also reported was that 6/10 want government financial support finally in preparing for weather events, as if emergency alerts, storm shelters, etc., are unrelated to government. Nearly all respondents, however, were worried about the rising costs of these “weather events,” a key debate that always ignores location, building habits, economic trends, inflation, and the cost of goods and living habits. What this report fails to consider, besides the definition of already subjective “severe weather,” is that weather might be altered but can never ultimately be controlled by man, be it through human activity (climate change) or geo-engineering, i.e., the alternative to the former. Both views submit that nothing is natural; it's all manmade and government can deal with it. Despite both of these views, weather related deaths have plummeted since the 1920s at a peek of 500,000 to less than 5-10,000 per year today. This is largely due to natural advances in technology and observation. That's not to say geo-engineering is a myth, because it is NOT. But recent weather, from dust storms and fires to blizzards and tornados, have the previous ideologies in heated debate, while both neglect to acknowledge the complexity of weather, like with human health, and the power of Mother Nature. Likewise, much of these debates tend to be US-Centric, with CBS reporting that recent strong winds only extend from the Canadian border to the Mexican border. Snowfall in Chiba Prefecture Japan in mid-March is abnormal but not unheard of, and is thus seen as just the changing of the seasons. In the US, it is proof of something afoot. All of the recent “extreme weather” is also blamed for every type of weather imaginable: the same storm systems caused fires, dust storms, rain, tornadoes, snow, blizzards, and thunderstorms, not to mention heat and cold. CBS reported: “a massive storm system moving across the country unleashed winds that triggered deadly dust storms and fanned more than 100 wildfires. Forecasters assigned an unusual ‘high risk' designation to the system, which was also blamed for icy winter weather in northern parts of the country and severe thunderstorms, including on the West Coast, on Sunday…. Winds gusting up to 80 mph were predicted from the Canadian border to Texas.”It should lastly be noted that most fires in the United States are started by cooking methods, or other causes like arson, with less than 5% in most states coming from anything natural or climate rated. -FREE ARCHIVE (w. ads)SUBSCRIPTION ARCHIVEX / TWITTER FACEBOOKWEBSITECashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tst-radio--5328407/support.
