Today on The Karen Kenney Show, I'm so jazzed because we're talking to my friend, Kelsey Abbott. Kelsey is an intuitive Human Design Reader, a Certified Professional Coach, an Instigator of Joy and the host of the “Find Your Awesome” podcast. She helps Spiritual Adventurers remember who they are and why they're here, so they can up-level their lives with ease. In this episode, we talk about the 5 types of Human Design & how they express themselves in our lives. I loved this wicked fun conversation of how Human Design helps us to know ourselves better and how to live in alignment with & in the flow of our particular design. The more deeply we know ourselves, our purpose and our gifts - the more we can use them genuinely in the world to be in better relationship with and service to others. Kelsey believes that the Universe wants us to be “sparkly AF” and that joy is our natural state. When Kelsey isn't playing in her business, she's bringing curiosity, play and joy to triathlon -- a sport she races as an elite amateur. Today on the Karen Kenney Show we're going back to an episode that I originally released in April of 2019. In this episode, I talk with my beautiful & brilliant friend Susan X Jane about Race, Racism, Diversity, Culture and a Willingness to be uncomfortable! Susan X Jane is the Principle of Navigators Consulting. She has over 25 years of experience working in the field of culture, diversity and inclusion, providing strategic planning, facilitation, program development, and training to both big and small organizations in Boston and beyond. Susan helped dozens of Boston area organizations grow their capacity to serve diverse audiences during her decade as a senior manager at the YWCA Boston. Most recently, Susan was a professor of Communications and director of Wheelock College's Communication and Media Literacy program where she trained the next generation of activists and leaders to affect change in the public and private sector, teaching courses like Media and Race, Sociology of Minorities, and Organizational Communication. Susan is a skilled facilitator, experienced in making organizational cultures inclusive. She has served on a number of planning committees, including The Youth Voice Collaborative, LiNC, The South End Youth Workers Alliance, The Wheelock College Strategic Realization Team, and The Boston Civic Media Planning Group, to develop and support execution of long-term organizational strategic plans. Susan believes that diversity isn't about checking a box; it's about leveraging the best human capital to achieve your organization's mission and goals. She is passionate about helping organizations build sustainable integrated inclusion practices that will help their company, their clients and our world thrive. About Navigators Our country and the communities and audiences we serve are becoming increasingly diverse: By the year 2040, America will become a majority-minority country. What does that mean for businesses looking to run lean while building teams, getting work done and serving clients? It means having diversity is a key competency, not just an add-on; it means inclusion is essential to being able to respond to our increasingly diverse constituency. It is no longer a question of whether or not your company should pay attention to diversity and inclusion, it's now an imperative to do it well. Diversity ensures we get the right people in the room. Inclusion, done right, creates stronger more creative teams. A comprehensive diversity and inclusion strategy helps organizations leverage their diversity to work smarter, with more creativity, and successful collaborations, resulting in better production. In order to create inclusive communities prepared to respond to our new reality, companies need to think beyond one-prong approaches and create a multifaceted D & I strategic plan that can operate across their organization, ensuring their workforce, collaborators and work product all represent—and appeal—to their diverse audience. Navigators seek to empower every member of your organization with the tools and strategies to build an inclusive organization, from front line workers to senior management. So much of the damage, trauma and issues that people struggle with in our adult years often stems from what I like to call “the childhood nest”. You know, the shit that was going down in our households when we were little kids. If we didn't receive enough nurturing & nourishment in our formative years, if we didn't get the love and care we deserved as “little birds” - if the ones who were supposed to protect you, were also the ones that abandoned, abused, rejected or judged you - it's understandable how we end up believing the BS (beliefs + stories) we tell ourselves that clip our wings and hold us back. As a Spiritual Mentor, one of the things that I like to do is to create a safe place (a new kind of nest) where people can come to mend their wings, find their strength, take radical responsibility, remember who they really are and spread those tail feathers! Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about THE NEST. About discovering and using the spiritual tools that will enable us to return to our natural state of inheritance of peace, love and happiness. So we can then go out and create nests for others! Nowadays, with all the craziness that's going on, plus the obsessive nature of social media, it's wicked easy to become hyper-focused on the self. To view everything through the small, distorted ego-lens of ME, ME, & more ME. So much so that we might forget to widen the lens that we're viewing the world through. So that what's in our field of vision and concern expands to include the welfare, perspective, justice and care for other beings and creatures. The reality is, while we're not always going to be able to exactly or fully know what another person is going through - because of differences in privilege, culture, religion, sexuality, class, age, geography, education, finances, experience, etc. However, we can still certainly do better at having empathy, compassion and understanding for other people that might be marginalized, treated unfairly or suffering. And if we see something, we shouldn't just speak up and say something - we should also be courageous enough to do something about it. I think this is one of the things that can often go missing in the “self-help” world & movement. This sphere of influence often has plenty of books, webinars, courses and coaches that like to talk about knowing, healing & loving yourself - but the truth is that true self-help doesn't begin and end with there. If your self-help ends with you - then it's not complete. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about one of the greatest gifts we can give when doing work on ourselves, is to also become more aware of those around us. One of the most powerful ways we can show love to ourselves and others is to pay close attention and notice what's going on around us, including the hurting people and animals in it. Going inward for healing is just the first step. By placing our focus outside of ourselves and turning our suffering and pain into service for others that might be going through something very similar is one of the ways that we heal. On this Spiritual journey, we've got to remember that “Self Help Doesn't End With Your Self”. What You Will Learn On This Episode: He Didn't Miss A Beat (3:57) Does It Just End There? If you know me at all, then you know I'm a bona-fide animal lover! Yet, people are often surprised that I love peacocks as much as I do, since they're routinely perceived as prideful and arrogant. But I think they're actually the opposite. To me, they're the perfect representation of embodied authenticity and confidence - which is way different than arrogance. Peacocks don't think they're special. They just go around looking and being exactly how the Divine made them. They're a pretty cool “example” of how to move through the world - not apologizing for being who you are, and not tucking their tail feathers or spreading their wings because it might make some other “bird” jealous, insecure or uncomfortable. Peacocks also have a rich history of mythology & symbolism across a variety of faith traditions and cultures. They're kind of the Spiritual poster-child for qualities such as: Knowledge, Benevolence, Kindness, Compassion & Guardianship. They also represent: Self-Love, Self-Esteem, Confidence, Protection, Humor, Spiritual Awakening, All-Seeing Vision, Light-Heartedness, Immortality, Resurrection & Being Well-Balanced. Not too shabby if you ask me! Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about remembering who we're born to be and not being afraid to show your true colors. Recognizing that it's possible to move through the world with confidence in who we are, understanding where we come from and knowing ourselves as a child of God, without showing up like an arrogant A-hole. Ha! You don't have to apologize for being who the Divine created you to be. Your job is to spread your wings and your beautiful tail feathers and own it. You're a MF'n Peacock! Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking with my friend and Intuitive Healer, Maryanne Sea. Maryanne Sea was nine years old when she wrote her first autobiography entitled, “Freckles” and in it, she told her readers that she wanted to be a medical missionary. Unknown to her she would have to help herself heal before she could ever help anyone else. Maryanne was never a healthy child but her health completely collapsed at 27 years old when she was hit by a car crossing the street in a blizzard. A year later weighing in at 70lbs she was labelled as permanently & totally disabled by the US Government as a result of extreme chemical sensitivity. In order to recover, Maryanne had to remove herself completely from the modern world and live in isolation for years at a time. During these years, she began to explore the connections between her thoughts, her feelings and her physical body. This led to the development of her intuition where she could find and heal content held deep within herself. Maryanne's return to the world brought a passion for sharing with others the power of the mind/body connection and the power of intuition in healing. She moved to Australia and taught doctors and nurses in hospitals and in several universities, while also being the first coordinator of the MindBody Healing course in the “Master's in Wellness” degree program at RMIT University in Melbourne. She's now worked as an “Intuitive” for twenty-five years, calling upon her intuition to help others grow and heal. She loves to work with babies in utero, as well as help people who, like herself, never found it easy to embody or feel safe in their own bodies. Maryanne's second autobiography, “Love is the Healer” will be published in June 2020. We all have experiences that happen to us throughout the course of our lives. These experiences quickly become the story that we write about and label ourselves with. After the murder of my mother I fell into the story role of the “victim”. I became THE “Miss Attitude”, stuck in a place of darkness. Like me when writing our story we all start with a shitty first draft, or what I like to call “our victim” stories. The place where all the trauma and drama reside. One space where if we don't have someone to step in to check us back into reality, it is very easy to get stuck in a victim loop. This loop of darkness is not where we should want to stay or live. It is possible to transform our suffering into our salvation. We can do this by surrounding ourselves with the right kind of people whether that be a mentor, a coach, or tying into our own spiritual team. Whatever that looks like with their help we can move from the wound into wisdom and transform our story to our glory. Today on the Karen Kenney Show, we are talking about moving from our “Story To Our Glory”. Sometimes the journey and the process to get there can be difficult but the good news is we do not have to do this alone. What You Will Learn On This Episode: Don't Let Your Story Tell You (6:00) The First Draft (14:18)Let The HeartBreak (26:49)Spiritual Sherpa (35:21)Mother's Day (42:52)Coming Back To The Nest (50:11) Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, and the founder of Fearless Flow Mentoring. People are spending time online more than ever before and everybody with a social media profile or page also has a built-in “personal platform” to hawk their wares, beliefs and opinions. Something that's wicked helpful to remember is that we're all coming from different places, perspectives, and points of view - and so we'll all need, like and resonate with different things in our lives, at different times. What worked for us yesterday, may not be what we need today. Who we used to like, follow and agree with will probably change too and that's totally okay. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about “taking only what we need” - whether it's from a post, what we see, hear and read all around us in this moment and leaving the rest behind. What's working for someone else is not necessarily going to be what's going to work for us. So take what's helpful and leave the rest behind. We don't need to take things personally or lose ourselves in what someone else is doing. This only serves to break down communication, well being and ultimately our inner peace. We need clear, strong paths during this time - so no matter what content you're consuming or coming across - choose to Take What Works and let the rest go. One of the things about being a Spiritual Mentor and a writer is that I tend to pay close attention to what's going on around me. I also do my best to watch my own mind (the stories it likes to tell and the meaning that it assigns to everything) like a feckin' hawk! Ha! In today's world, we have to be extra vigilant about what we're consuming - seeing, hearing, reading, thinking and believing - because truth is, we're being fed a constant barrage from all sides about what's “true”. From the time we're kids, to when we finally go out on our own - we're being conditioned by the thought systems of our parents, caretakers, teachers, community, church, and beyond! As adults, it's our job to sift through everything and decide for ourselves where the truth actually lays for each of us. What we're going to keep, toss and call bullshit on. This is a learned skill of discernment that comes from spending time with our Inner Teacher and our Spiritual Team on the regular. Independent and critical thinking has always been wicked important and now more than ever we have to be willing to think for ourselves, even if it means other people you love won't like it. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about listening to our gut instincts, trusting Divine Intelligence and finding the truth for ourselves in this world where we have access to everyone else's opinions, agendas and version of the events. If you really understand somebody's story, it's almost impossible on some level to not forgive them. However, that does not mean we have to excuse their shitty behaviour. For there to be any true healing for either side we have to hold the people in our lives accountable for their actions. This does not mean we go at them from a place of “I'm better than you” sitting up on our high horse above them. It is possible to hold them accountable in a loving manner. One that does not take from our mental well-being in the process. Today on the Karen Kenney Show, we are talking about how it is not loving to allow the people in our lives to continue on in their bad behavior. Part of loving them sometimes means we have to be upfront and keep them accountable by calling them out. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking with my friend, Meg Haines - spiritual teacher, healer and creator of “Divine Feminine Mastery”. We dive into Meg's childhood story and how her experiences as an only child and creative, empathic kid lead her to the work that she does today. We also discuss the importance of knowing your responsibility and your limitations, when working with folks with trauma and having integrity when working with clients that are coming to you for help. Meg is passionate about helping women deepen their connection with the Divine, honor their Soul's calling, trust their bodies' wisdom, and heal the blocks preventing them from fully loving and living so that they can shine and serve in the way they were always meant to! She has trained under many world-respected teachers such as; Brian Weiss, John Holland, and Robert Holden, receiving certifications in Coaching, Angel Therapy™, Past Life Regression, Reiki I & II, and Integrated Energy Therapy™, among other healing modalities. Things seem to have gone a little extra bat-shit crazy around the world these days and it's drastically changing the way most of us connect, function and earn a living. A lot of this new and “unknown” territory has led to an increase in stress for the population at large. After talking with and listening to a bunch of people share their thoughts and feelings of overwhelm, anxiety and fear, what I've come to realize is that what most of us are feeling is a form of grief. This feeling of grief comes from experiencing a death of sorts. The death of who we were as individual people and really society as a whole. There are so many external things that are changing and falling away and we're helpless to control so many aspects of that. But there is so much on the internal level that we can control. This is a chance for us to really go deep and get to know ourselves better. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about how we can best navigate this new, temporary way of living that we've all been thrust into and how it's possible over time, and with great compassion, to use Spiritual tools to transform our Grief into Gratitude. I'm pretty sure, that at some time in each of our lives, we've found ourselves asking this question... to God, the Universe, ourselves or whoever might be willing to listen: “Why? Why is this happening? Why is this happening to me?” Today on the Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about the spiritual practice that I like to call: Moving From The Why to The What. This is when we make a conscious choice to shift our focus from those ego-conditioned, fearful victimized thoughts of, “WHY is this happening to me?” - to the deeper and often more helpful question of, “WHAT is this teaching me? What is the lesson, blessing or opportunity here for me in this moment, situation or difficulty?” Our current situation or circumstance doesn't have to be something that I like, want, enjoy or even understand - but I know after years of Daily Spiritual Practice, first-hand experience and faith - that even in the most bizarre or mysterious moments, there's something here FOR me… if I'm willing to pay attention, ask for guidance and shift my perception from fear to Love. Our words have the power to uplift people and to create great change, but they can also be hurtful, harmful and debilitating to those around us. If we're not being mindful and responsible for what comes out of our mouths, we never know the impact that we're going to have on another person or ultimately on the world as a whole. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about being intentional with our words, and taking responsibility for what it is we're thinking, writing, posting and saying. This intention to be purposeful with our words starts within our own minds. How we talk to ourselves is also in direct correlation to what we'll eventually inspire or inflict out into the world and onto our brothers and sisters. We can use our words to either be loving or belittling. Join me as we talk about some helpful ways to be more mindful with our thoughts, our words and our actions (knowing that they will all leave an imprint on us and those around us) and as we ask ourselves the wicked important question: “How do I want to represent to the world what's truly on my mind and in my heart?” What You Will Learn On This Episode: Your Thoughts Become Your Words (3:42) Apologizing Doesn't Remove The Mark We Left (11:25) The Divine Comes To The Quiet Mind (15:16) We Are Spiritual Beings (21:35) What We Need (23:54) Your Words Should Pass Through 3 Gates (26:45) Kindness Doesn't Cost You Anything (30:53) Shut My Big Fat Mouth (36:13) Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, and the founder of Fearless Flow Mentoring. As you guys know, I have six “furry kids” that my Sweetie and I have rescued and adopted over the years. It was because of one of these adoptions (Bucky Biscuits) that I met my brilliant friend and today's guest, Sarah Wilson. Sarah Wilson is a Dog Expert and the genius behind “My Smart Puppy”. Over the years, she's appeared on PBS, ABC, CBS and Fox to share her wisdom when it comes to the well-being and training of our dogs and how our deep connections can actually bring a much-needed level of health and happiness to everyone in our home. People often limit “dog training” to trying to change the behaviour of the animal, but it's about so much more than that. This is about developing the relationship between the dog and its human counterpart, learning the language of our beloved pets and respecting what the animal is so clearly and honestly communicating to us. As I often joke, “People think that they have ‘dog' problems, but it's really that our dogs have ‘people' problems.” Ha! Today on the Karen Kenney Show we take a deeper look at how these beautiful, furry creatures bring so much happiness and healing into our everyday lives & how we can get better at listening to them and loving them. Join us as we explore the desire for connection, how it's hard to be sad with a joyful dog at your feet and the importance of patience and paying attention in all of our lives. At one point or another, each of us has found ourselves struggling with setting personal boundaries. Sometimes that means we might need to establish or renegotiate the limits, extents, lines and confines of our various relationships. Perhaps you let someone new get too close, too soon - and wound up feeling like you were being smothered, suckered or bamboozled. Ha! Maybe you've been tolerating some “so not soothing” behaviors from your family of origin because they taught you “family comes first” or they demand close contact and loyalty even if that no longer feels good, right or supportive for you. To keep this from happening, as adults, we need to find healthy ways to adjust and adapt mindfully when it comes to connecting with and loving others. As I often tell my Spiritual Mentoring clients, it's OK to love someone from a distance. Sometimes, the most loving thing you can do for yourself (and them) is to create some space for safety, perspective and healing. Loving people from a distance, doesn't always mean that they're bad people. It just means that for your own sanity and well-being at times, finding a better suited internal longitude or external latitude is necessary. Communicating from further or farther away, can feel safer and allows us to start building a better bond that may or may not move into something more close in proximity down the road. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we are talking about “finding the right distance” that works for us when it comes to connecting to and loving the people in our lives. After listening, I invite you to get curious and ask, “What's the right distance for the different relationships in your life?” What You Will Learn On This Episode: We Hit 20,000 Downloads (01:19) Loving People From a Distance (11:00) Finding The Right Distance (17:45) • Cut The Chord & Go (33:09) Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, and the founder of Fearless Flow Mentoring. Sometimes we reach a point in our lives where we just aren't feeling what's become commonplace for us or expected of us. In those moments it‘s alright to give ourselves permission to pivot. We don't have to keep “shoulding” all over ourselves. Ha! We can choose to do less. We can choose to stop and walk away or simply take a break and come back to it later or try again down the road. We only get one shot at this life, so why not show your true colors and express yourself freely. That is what ultimately will draw the right people, clients and experiences to you. Stop forcing things. Instead let go, surrender and be true to who you really are. Be the light and the love that you were created to be. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're letting go of all things that feel “forced”, providing ourselves with a little more wiggle room, finding the curiosity to try something new and giving ourselves the freedom to pivot should we want it or need it. In our current world of social media and internet access, we tend to “feel” like we actually “know” everyone (even though we really don't), especially when it comes to famous people. As a result, sometimes their deaths can catch us off guard or stir up a lot of deep, personal, and unexpected feelings. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, I'm talking with my friend Bill Baren about this very topic in the face of Kobe Bryant's recent passing. Together we're exploring the depth and complexity of what this tragedy stirred up in each of us, the lessons and insights it brought forth and how we can use those feelings for betterment in our world as a whole. One way or another, death is often a profound experience. And when it comes to the death of celebrities, the aftereffect of it can sometimes be surprising. In today's podcast episode, Karen Kenney and I come together to talk about the recent passing of Kobe Bryant and what it means for each of us. There are lessons here for all of us. When someone we feel like we know (but don't actually know) dies, it can stir up a lot of deep, personal feelings. We explore the complexity of those feelings and how to channel it into doing good in the world. When I work with my Spiritual Mentoring clients, there's an exercise that I have them do that's based off of one of the Online Training modules that I created for them called: Balcony People. Balcony people are the reliable, enthusiastic cheerleaders in your life that love you, get you, see you and celebrate you! They're the ones that show up to cheer you on at your events, in your successes or bring encouragement when you've forgotten your brilliance. They're a wicked important part of your journey and it's good to recognize, acknowledge and express gratitude for them. So take a moment to ask yourself, “Who are the Balcony People in my life that consistently show up for me?” Just as it's important to know who the Balcony People are, you should also have a pretty good grip on who the “Basement People” in your life are too. Basement People are the ones that keep trying to hold you back, discourage you, or pull you back down into the “dirty water” - because they don't want you to actually shine too bright in your success. They tend to suffer from a lack of Balcony People in their own life. So rather than learning how to celebrate a friend or a loved one, they get jealous and want to drag them down into the dark cellar of misery with them. Today on The Karen Kenney Show we're diving into how it's not only important to have Balcony People in your life but to also BE a Balcony Person for others. The love, the light, the goodness, the holiness, and the creativity that we see in each other, is a super powerful and beautiful thing to have reflected back to us. It's good to first take an honest look at our own thoughts, words and actions and then at the people, we surround ourselves with and ask, “Are you a balcony or basement person?” What You Will Learn On This Episode: Who Are Your Balcony People? We live in a wicked busy world, where a lot of people are trying to do way too many things all at once. Whether they're distracted by their phones/electronic devices, social media or have a conditioned addiction to being busy - more and more of what matters might be slipping through the cracks. With so many of us not being present or in the moment, we wind up feeling anxious, disconnected, lonely and often completely “out of our minds”. As much as we'd like to believe it, multitasking is not the optimal skill. We were not made to be rushed, distracted and hurried all the time. Today on The Karen Kenney show, we talk about how slowing down, paying attention and “single-tasking” can benefit you and your relationships. Taking our time with things and being present with those we love will not only decrease the anxiety and stress levels in our lives, it will also save everyone so much time and energy from having to redo and repeat ourselves. The truth is, one of the greatest ways that we can show love is to pay attention. Your presence in the “precious present” is how we show those we care about that they truly matter. This week's podcast and blog was inspired by something that was said at my favorite 8-Day writing conference down in FL. One of my favorite Boston Authors, Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, Live By Night) was talking about writing “Characters” in our stories and I couldn't help but see the connection between that and Spiritual Integrity. I was curious about what determines our character, are we really who we think and “say” we are and how are we showing up when nobody is watching. Sometimes when we act “out of character” it's because we're not in our right mind. We have temporarily, as A Course in Miracles says, “taken a detour into fear”. We're literally “out of our mind”! Ha! Here's the thing, if what we think/believe and what we “say” we believe are not in alignment with what we DO, there's going to be some suffering. Not only for us, but for those in our lives as well. Today on The Karen Kenney Show we're asking the question; Who Are You? Is who we truly are aligned with the character that we display both in private and out to the world? It's time to cut the crap (ha!), take a good look at ourselves and do our best to make sure that what we think, say & do is in alignment. That the person you claim to be is actually reflected in how you're showing up in real life and online. OK, so here's something interesting that I've discovered over the last 40 or so years... Grief & Love situations can make people say all kinds of clumsy shit. Ha! I don't think they “mean” to say things that are hurtful - it's just that they sometimes don't “think” before opening their mouths. They're sometimes blinded by their own pain, need to be special or their reluctance to be vulnerable - that they're not able to see beyond their own beliefs, feelings, or suffering. Given this, they literally can't or don't even try to understand that what they say or how they say it might sound “so not soothing” to someone else. Like, have you ever found yourself in one of the following scenarios, where someone says something to you to either try to downplay your grief... For example, after the death of a “furry kid” or beloved pet, “But it was just a dog/cat/etc”? Or they try to "outdo" any other grief that's ever come before or will ever come after with a comment like: “THIS ___ (fill in the blank)_____ is the worst thing that could ever happen.” Like, kinda' sending the message... "Look, don't even TRY to compare your loss to mine sucker, because I will out grief you. I will win." HA! Of course, we may not know EXACTLY what it's like to have those specific tragic experiences, but we've all had our own difficult losses in one way or another. It's not really kind or fair to try and compare them. From one person to the next, grief can look very different but that doesn't mean it's any less debilitating. Grief is not a competition. Neither is love. We shouldn't be trying to beat one another in comparing our level of loss or the depth of our love. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we take a look at how grief and love can affect each of us in its and our own way and that we're not here to compete about it. Please join me in opening our hearts and minds to understanding how our statements can deeply affect everyone, especially those that are already suffering a loss; whether that be a pet, a spouse, a parent or a child. I have some super gifted friends who've been doing some things for a wicked long time. They've been clear & focused and have devotedly put in the “10,000 hours” or more into studying, practicing and living their area of expertise. They're disciplined in learning their craft, whatever that may be and have spent many, many years discovering, developing and becoming deft in their knowledge in a particular field. And yet, those very same brilliant people do not go around calling themselves a “Master”. Ha! There's this level of humility that comes with their skill, because even though they know a lot and they know it well; they also understand that there's always still so much to be learned. Unfortunately, what we're seeing a lot of out in the world right now, is so many people professing to be proficient, experienced and accomplished at something, without laying down the groundwork first. They “hang a shingle”, start calling and selling themselves as a thing, maybe before they're actually ready and safely able to do or be the damn thing. Today on the Karen Kenney Show, we're taking a look at why so many people feel the need to jump from “just learned it - to teaching it” all in one go? Why there's such a hustle to go from “saw it, stealing it, selling it” without giving the ideas, skills, processes, or materials a chance to marinate and become a self-learned & self-earned experience. In the online world, it seems like everybody's in a rush to get the fame, the fortune, the followers and the “friends”, that they leave out the part where they haven't put in the hours that it takes to become “masterful” or wicked good at their craft. They're not only leaving their lanes, but they're also trying to cut lanes. And as any awake and aware driver worth their salt knows, that shit can get real dangerous, real quick. As my dad used to say in the car when we were kids… “Everybody's in a feckin' rush to go nowhere.” Not only is this counterproductive to the instructor/teacher/coach themselves, but it's a disservice to their clients who are coming to them for genuine help. Join me as we talk about taking a step back, slowing down and opening up our hearts and minds to the continued learning that will not only benefit our business and clients but for ourselves as well. Don't be afraid to put in the time. If you start to get anxious or fearful or feel the need the hurry, ask yourself, “What's the Rush?” What You Will Learn On This Episode: Everybody's In A Rush 6:30 Fell In Love With Scooters 9:56 Build Themselves Into Little Frankenstein's 13:00 The Title You Take On 16:32 Have Some Reverence For Your Clients 22:26 Don't Be Afraid To Put In The Time 28:41 Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, and the founder of Fearless Flow Mentoring. Today on the Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about overachievers. You know, those of us that always like to set the bar wicked high for ourselves. Now, having big goals isn't a bad thing in and of itself… but things can get out of whack when we keep re-setting the bar so high and fast, that we never actually take the time to appreciate our success when we reach it. (or even sometimes, sail straight up and over it. It's in those times of success, that we need to step back, take the time to pause, breathe, reflect and appreciate the hard work it took to accomplish our goal. You know, give yourself a chance to take it in, celebrate, bust out a “power move” or do a little happy dance for ourselves. Ha! So much of the joy of being in the journey can get sucked right out if we're always so restless with our forward-future thinking. Cut yourself a little grace and mercy, invite in more fun and don't forget that you're worth is not dependent on what you DO. You are already worthy. It's your birthright, not something you have to earn by performing. So please, come join me in taking that pause, that deep breath and let's really celebrate how far we've already come! I get so excited at the start of a new year, because we get to put all of yesterday's nonsense behind us. All the ways we kinda' blew it, all the times we didn't quite live up to our own expectations or maybe we just fell a little short. The onset of a new year means we get a nice clean slate. We get to show up, let go of the fear and start living in love. Today on the Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about the two big things that are needed to start the year off strong and to stay strong throughout it. It's time to “Stop Playing Dumb” about who we really are and to make 2020 the year we show up more genuinely, authentically and truthfully. No more excuses or reason for why we cannot. No more time wasted living in victimhood and smallness. It's time to get real, change our minds, call in some help, and step into the light! Are you ready to surrender that old thought system of fear and start choosing the thought system of Love? Let's do this! As we come to the close of another year, I'm often asked how I spend my New Year's Eve. Truth is, I like to spend it at home in a low key, contemplative kind of way. I have a ritual that I do each year, where I sit down with blank sketch paper and a bunch of colored pens/markers. I take some time to look at the past 12-months and take stock of what went down. I reflect back on my path, my purpose and the people and projects I encountered along the way. I ask myself, “Where did I succeed? Where did I fall short? Who was there and did they help or hinder me? Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're doing some personal and spiritual “gardening”. I'm going to share with you my annual 3-Step Process that I call: The Lessons, The Love & The Letting Go - that I use to narrow down what I learned, what I keep and the who, what and how that I need to let go. Join me as we celebrate the crazy journey that was 2019, and how we can now gracefully and with gratitude let go of what has fulfilled its purpose and in turn open ourselves up for all of the Love and new possibilities that 2020 has in store for us. People are often so curious about what it is I do for work. And when I say that, “I'm a Spiritual Mentor” - I often get one of those questioning head tilts, that says “You're a WHAT? Like WTF does that even mean, KK?” Ha! So today on the Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about the Fearless Flow Mentoring that I offer, who it's really for and why I started doing this kind of work in the first place. Over the years, as simply a person with relationships - but especially as a yoga teacher, as a student + guide of A Course in Miracles, as a Passage Meditation practitioner and as a Gateless Writing Teacher - I've talked to and witnessed so many people who've shared with me their personal stories and fear feelings of sickness, sadness, separation, scarcity, smallness, shame and supposed sin, etc. Combine this whole being human experience - that is so often filled with trauma, loss, grief and all kinds of unimaginable brutality and violence - with also feeling disconnected from your true Self, your life purpose, from God, or your Source in Love and in Spirit and you have a hard-core recipe for suffering. And because of this, people often start to live from a place of hopelessness, helplessness, anxiety, confusion, depression, addiction or distress - which in turn leaves us feeling defeated, stressed out, unworthy, and painfully unlovable - which can suck the joy right the feck' out of our bodies, relationships, our creativity, and our lives. I believe that peace and happiness are our natural inheritance. They are our birthright… so if we aren't feeling these suckers on a consistent basis, then we know that we have a problem. Since your own best thinking has gotten you to where you are right now - it makes complete sense to call in some help (and trust me, we ALL need a little bit of help at times) - so you can learn how to shift your mind, choose differently, surrender your suffering, transform Your Story to Your Glory and to start navigating your life from a place of love & light, instead of fear! So, when people ask me what I do, I explain, “I work with people who've had more than their fair share of wicked hard shit happen to them. I help them lead a life like nothing bad has ever happened.” I know the power of this 1:1 Spiritual Mentoring work and I know the tangible results my clients get. If you want to discover more about it, please listen to this episode with open ears, an open heart and an open mind. If it resonates with you and you think you're ready to do this work, please go check out my offering, identify which one feels right for you and fill out the application. I will respond personally. Something that I often say to my Spiritual Mentoring clients and my friends is, “The Assignment is Alignment.” HA! In order to be aligned with the who, what & where we're supposed to be in life, we need to stop listening to the voice of the ego (aka: the voice of fear). Instead, we need to start listening for the voice of Love - that is our Spiritual Team. Today on the Karen Kenney Show, we take a closer look at what it means to listen to our Inner Teacher and receive our assignment that's trying to be made known to each of us. If we don't slow down, get still and quiet enough to listen to our Spiritual Team, we can't possibly begin to align ourselves with our true path and destination. I want you to go into 2020 with a wicked clear picture of where you're supposed to go, what you're supposed to be doing and what you're supposed to be saying and to whom. My greatest wish is that I want you to be able to do that without the fear, anxiety, worry or depression that comes from trying to rely on your own (human) strength vs. the strength of the Divine within you. Wouldn't it be nice to just be inspired by Love to move through the world with great confidence, compassion and creativity instead? You can begin to transform Your Story to Your Glory with the help of your Inner Teacher and your entire Spiritual Team. Today on the Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about one of those difficult realizations that we often have after we experience the loss of something or someone of great importance to us and what can happen as a result. I've gone through it myself when I was younger and have seen + heard it from enough people over the years - friends and clients who are navigating a death, divorce or destruction of the familiar. You know, those kinds of situations where you might feel wicked sad to lose the people or pets you love, or you're being forced to face uncomfortable changes in close relationships and accept that your ideas and ideals don't always work out. This resistance and sometimes shock that even though something huge in our life has happened - the world seems to have not gotten the ole' memo. HA! That despite our personal losses, whatever or however significant they may be, Life Goes On. The key lesson for us is to not take it personally, to not take it to heart and get upset with the world around us because it continues to move on, even though we're crushingly sad and temporarily unable to keep up. Understand that it's okay to hit the pause button and step off the treadmill for a little bit. You can take the time you need to grieve that loss, get some support, help or mentoring, and do the work of self-care and self-awareness. There's a natural process that we have to go through - but in the end, we must be willing to surrender the suffering to our Inner Teacher and Spiritual Team and open our hearts and minds to healing - so that gradually, but inevitably - you can begin to transform “Your Story to Your Glory” and step back into the Fearless Flow of your life. One of the things that I often ask my Spiritual Mentoring clients is: “In this moment, can you be grateful for everything that's happened in your life so far?” And in the places where there's still a big, fat NO ------> Like feck' no, KK, I am so NOT grateful for that… death, divorce, disease, diagnosis, disappointment, disaster, etc. Why on earth would I want to give THANKS for THAT?) Well, my brothers & sisters, that right there is exactly where there's still some forgiveness & healing work to be done. One of the common threads that I see a lot when I talk to people, clients (or potential clients) is their special sentiment for their suffering & to all of the things that have gone or are going wrong in their life. Whether we care to admit to it or not, we're kinda' attached to our traumas & dramas. Ha! Now, this doesn't mean that people are never thankful for their journeys, but in those particular moments of conversation with me, I often gently remind them that part of their problem is that there's a lack of gratitude & humility. Today on the Karen Kenney Show, we're switching it up and flipping the script about how to move through the world with an attitude of gratitude (for even the wicked hard stuff). Our focus will go from what we perceive as going wrong - to thoughts of, “What can we be grateful for right now?!” Love is the way I walk in gratitude. Happy Thanksgiving! Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking with my friend Stacy Krecklow, co-founder of Ohana Kitchen about her story, her journey and her passion for “Servant Leadership Culture”. Stacy Krecklow is also one of my Spiritual Mentoring clients and a fellow “Masshole” originally from Amesbury MA. She now resides with her husband (Jay), four-year-old daughter (Prudence) and her adorable Wheaten Terrier (Henry) in Portsmouth, NH Starting at an entry-level position as a teenager, Stacy spent 18+ years working within a Culture-Based sustainable restaurant group called the Flatbread Company. During this time, she became impassioned about employee culture, community-focused business practices, and helped create the management leadership program for the Flatbread nationwide brand. This experience led her into her love of Business & Leadership Coaching. Along with creating her own Servant Leadership Systems for the Ohana Kitchen Teams, Stacy also currently works with entrepreneurs and upcoming business leaders. In 2017, Stacy & Jay opened their first joint venture: Ohana Kitchen - which is a fun, fast, healthy quick-serve Poke restaurant with care towards environmentally friendly practices and a servant leadership culture. Have you been feeling “THE SQUEEZE” lately? You know the squeeze… That intense pressure you feel when a lot of shit is going down in your world all at once and you're being asked to let go, surrender, change and maybe even let a few people, relationships, habits and old stories metaphorically “die” or fall away? That place right before the transformation actually happens, when stuff might still feel sticky, hard, scary or wicked uncomfortable... That time when your viewing your situation and your circumstances as if you're “getting it from all sides” and you can't help but think to yourself, “Man, life just kind of feels like a Motherfecker' right now.” HA! If you're picking up what I'm putting down, maybe now is the time to listen a little closer. Our bodies are constantly giving us feedback about the quality of our minds and the way we're choosing to perceive things. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we talk about losing our joy when we choose fear as a teacher, instead of Love. Our awareness about not feeling joyous, is our mood telling us that we are no longer in our right mind, we have taken a “detour into fear” and dis-spirited ourselves. But the good news is, “This Need Not Be”. It's time to choose differently. Will you embrace your natural state of peace and happiness and choose again? Mentors can be an extremely powerful force in our lives. As the ones who've gone before us, whether that be because of first-hand experience or simply age, their hard-earned lessons and wisdom POV, can teach us a lot about what might be helpful for us on our own journeys. Things would be totally different now if I didn't have the influence of both female and a few male mentors in my life, especially after my Mom died. While I still had to do the work myself, it was helpful to know that I didn't always have to do it all alone. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about the impact of Mentors & Tormentors. While we might definitely prefer one over the other (Ha!) - the truth is - they can both teach us valuable lessons. Sometimes we're taught through hardship & brutality and other times we learn through kindness & compassion. There are so many different ways this world will ask you to learn. But it really comes down to learning through either “pain or joy”. The key is to keep an open mind and have the willingness to glean what we can from each situation. Are you unhappy with the world around you, the way your life is going or the path you've been walking? If you answered yes… then I have good news for you. You can always CHOOSE AGAIN! It's time to take back your power and stop blaming others and the world around you for your unhappiness and lack of inner peace. While we can't always control what happens, we can always control how we respond to and think about what happens. One of the things that I often talk about with my clients is, “Right now, the way your life is, it's the consequence of you being yourself.” Ha! If you take a look around at all the “problems” you think you have, you are the common denominator. Your life is basically the consequence of you being you: showing up the way you've been showing up, doing shit the way you've been doing it & thinking the way you've been thinking. So, your life is the way that it is because of the choices that you've made, and it's going to continue to be the way that it is, as long as you keep making those same feckin' choices. Here's the thing, if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got. HA! In today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we talk about how we can always “choose again” by listening to the gentle call of the Divine. Understanding that we can make the necessary changes to ensure that “the consequences of being ourselves” instead becomes a reflection of the Love that we truly are. When I was younger and naive, I use to take people at face value & their word. Over time, I learned that it's one thing for a person to think or say a thing - it's totally different for them to actually act on what they say or follow through. Here's what I've come to know, if our thoughts, words and actions are not in alignment with our truth not only will we suffer and eventually doubt ourselves but other people are going to think we're full of sh*t. A good question to ask ourselves is; “How much am I living in alignment with what I say truly matters to me?” In today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we're calling ourselves out on our own bullsh*t and moving into our brilliance. I often tell my Spiritual Mentoring clients, “It's hard to be full of God, when you're already full of shit (or full of yourself).” HA! Life doesn't always have us travelling in a perfectly straight line. We sometimes change our mind or decide to try something different and don't always know where the heck we're going to end up. Good news is, it's totally cool to think you know where you're meant to go but then still change your mind or direction if and when the time comes for you to pivot. In my own life, I've taken what I call the “Zig-Zag” path. Ha! This pivot or choosing to climb out of that box or space that people have tried placing us in - can sometimes make others wicked uncomfy. Which is why on today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I'm inviting you to trust yourself, your Inner Teacher & your Spiritual Team by listening to & following the guidance they give you about when it's time to make a course correction. I'm also (in a super silly + joking way) “giving you the ole' pink permission slip” you think you need to make your pivots with confidence. As humans, we're born into a world that conditions us to live in a fear-based state of thinking. Conditioning that has most of us believing that we're separate from God, from our Source, from Love and each other. Once our minds take the ego's BS bait, it starts to make this falsity it's new Gospel truth. This dualistic way of thinking is then like the engine that drives the mental train of all our thoughts, words, actions, behaviors and the choices that follow. This is where committing to a daily spiritual practice can work to retrain the mind and help us to see that we're actually an extension of the Divine and Love itself. In today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about the skill of knowing when to “back down” and the healthy importance & power that comes with the ability to Retreat. A lot of us tend to look at retreating as a sign of weakness - but I've lived long enough now to tell you that sometimes, it's actually the extreme opposite. Having the wisdom and insight to know why & when to retreat (when it's necessary) is part of our strength and gives us the ability to let go of shit that's been holding us up & weighing us down and to build ourselves back up by backing the feck' up and slowing down. Ha! Join me on retreat and learning how to let go and live in the Fearless Flow and take some time to reset and transform. I'd love to have you with us. xo What you will learn on this episode: Definition of Retreat (3:20) Going on Retreat (6:09) Slowing Down (15:11) Fearless Flow (18:27) Do You Want to Be Right or Happy? We're here in this world. We've got a certain amount of time. None of it's guaranteed. And most of us, we don't know when we're going to die. But... if you knew you were dying, would you live your life differently? Would you be ready to stop making excuses for the choices that you've been making? Would you stop blaming your current life on your past circumstances? Would you be willing to let go of your old stories & start to write new ones? Would you finally cut the shit already and get down to the business of doing the spiritual work that you came here to do? In today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about not taking our time here for granted. Time is not a renewable resource and life is not guaranteed, so let's choose to live a life that's without regrets. As humans we only get one shot to do it right. This means a full commitment is required. Don't wait to do the things you want to or came here to do. Always tell the people in your life that you love them and forgive the shit out of each other! HA! Step up to the plate and go ALL IN. Shine your most powerful light while you're still here. Heal your old wounds, forgive yourself and others and find your purpose. Don't wait, start to rewrite your story today! Here's something I learned at a young age… time is not guaranteed to us & we never know when the last exhale is coming. So, we've got to stop wasting time (our own and others) and start to put our money where our mouth is. We need to step up in both our personal & professional lives and “walk the walk”, instead of just talking about it. Talk is cheap, so we've got to get some skin in the game. In today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we're taking a look at “Signing Up vs. Showing Up.” Whether it's projects or passions, whatever you're doing - don't waste time on things that don't matter. If you've signed up, you need to do your darndest to show up. It's about getting intentional about what you're doing & why you're doing it and asking the serious question of, “With the time I have left, what do I want to do with it?” What you will learn on this episode: Gavin DeGraw Story (01:33) Sunday Spiritual Sign-Up (3:45) Signing Up vs. Showing Up (8:03) People Come to Work with Me (11:40) I Want the Peace of God (12:46) Be on Time (14:59) Limited Amount of Time (16:16) Let's Be Honest (20:51) Little Kid Inside Us (21:27) Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, and the founder of Fearless Flow Mentoring. In today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I'm wicked excited to be having a deep-dive, down-to-earth, heart-to-heart conversation with one of my bona-fide heroes Zach Skow. Zach is the Executive Director & Founder of “Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue” a non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates, trains and re-homes death row dogs from Kern County's high-kill animal shelters. After a car accident, Zach struggled with alcoholism for years before he was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease in July 2008. He was given only 90-Days to live and needed to be sober for six months to qualify for a liver transplant - and during that time of sobriety, he said he felt scared, suicidal and struggled with self-love and acceptance. But as Zach soon learned, "Dogs are Powerful Medicine" and during his transition period into sobriety, he established Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, to help “the throwaways” dogs with special needs and histories of abuse and neglect who land in animal shelters. Since then, Zach has 10 years of sobriety under his belt and as an organization Marley's Mutts has helped save & rescue over 5,000 dogs! He's also founded a program that I'm a huge believer in called "Pawsitive Change" that pairs death-row dogs with inmates in CA prisons - giving both humans & dogs a second chance at life and rehabilitation. This episode is super near & dear to my heart - and Zach is a true testament to what it means to transform “Your Story to Your Glory”! I hope you'll take the time to check it out. Social Media Platforms were created to be addictive. Sadly, many of us have fallen into that trap of co-dependency & can't function without constantly checking our phones. A lot of people feel compelled to post so much vulnerable content online - we share our creativity, our dreams, what inspires us, what we care about... And when those posts don't get the likes & shares we're hoping for or people leave unwanted comments, we start to believe that we're not worthy, lovable or good enough. In today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about social media and how dangerous it is for people to allow it to dictate their self-worth. We take a look at how we've become hostages to these online spaces where we feel that if we don't post to them every day, sometimes even multiple times per day, then we fear that we don't even exist. HA! I want to encourage you to start using Social Media as a tool for self-expression - rather than as a means for you to get feedback about your value as a human being. Because “if you already like yourself - then social media likes don't feckin' matter!” What You'll Learn on This Episode: Social Media Syndrome (3:01) Let Social Media be the “Tool” - Not You. HA! Why is it when something is asked of us, we often have a hard time just saying NO? As women, we can be so used to taking care of other people's needs, that many of us tend to overlook what we truly want for ourselves. Whether it's because we don't want to let people down or hurt their feelings - there can be some weird guilt that comes up when we choose to say “no”.Instead of just using one word to express what we want, we feel like we have to explain ourselves to everybody. It's like we've somehow come to believe that saying no, just isn't enough. In today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we get wicked comfortable with using the powerful word “NO” as a complete sentence & begin to understand that nothing more than that simple but impactful two-letter word is needed. In today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we talk about what I like to call “The Shadow Self”. The younger version of ourselves, our ego side of us that is and wants to be the strong protector. Many times, it rears its head because of childhood trauma and stays with us as we grow into adults. In society, we tend to look at this side of ourselves as the bad, dark side that should be pushed down and never allowed to come forth. Today, I actually want to invite you to take a different approach. One that doesn't have us abandoning our shadow self but instead bringing it into the realm of light and making peace with it. In doing so, I believe we can turn this alter ego into a positive asset. What you will learn on this episode: The ego-personality aka “The Shadow Self” (2:42) Vickky with 2 “K's” (6:16) What are the shadow aspects of your life? Change is not something that comes easy to most. We have to deal with our own crazy ego & all the bullshit stories telling us we're not good enough. Add to that the uphill battle we sometimes face with those we've been surrounding ourselves with.People who don't support your new way of thinking and being. People who maybe feel threatened by positive change and would rather pull you down than build you up. That's why you have to get serious about the people that you “cast” in your own life. When you're trying to change your mind and your life - it's wicked important to surround yourself with people who are on a similar journey. People who are also committed to doing that same kind of deep work. You want to spend time with others who are also disciplined and devoted to putting in some time, some energy & some faith. You want and need people who have a little Spiritual stamina! In today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we talk about “The Importance of Spiritual Fellowship.” We delve into the power of surrounding ourselves with like-minded people. In today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we talk with my dear friend Suzanne Dubus, Chief Executive of The Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center for the past 22+ years. A survivor of domestic violence herself, Suzanne understands what an abusive relationship is like and how challenging it can be to leave. She believes that safety should not simply be placed on the survivor's shoulders, but rather the responsibility for establishing a safe community belongs to the community itself as a whole. We'll talk with Suzanne about both the personal and universal effects of violence and how you can help others in a Domestic Violence situation or how you can get help yourself. What you will learn on this episode: Survivor Services that are provided (5:50) Is this a learned behavior? (10:36) Forgiveness and healing process (13:01) Why do we stay for so long? (15:08) Why do we give our power away? (22:32) Suzanne's visit to Boston (27:40) Victim training session and its effects (32:36) There is nothing like someone else that can understand (39:16) Violent Language (42:34) This does not only affect the people involved (44:00) If the fear does not have a place to go - it becomes dangerous (47:27) How you can help or how can you get help? (51:34) Suzanne joined the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center in 1995 and has served as its chief executive since 1997. She is credited with developing and administering domestic violence programs that are informed by the needs of survivors and are comprehensive and effective. In a White House ceremony in October 2010, Vice President Joseph Biden recognized the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center's Domestic Violence High-Risk Team Model, when he said, “We need to replace what we have been doing and replicate this kind of success.” Recognized as an expert in the field, Dubus was named a Champion of Change by the White House in October 2011; and most recently, the 2016 Woman of the Year by Delamano, Inc. She was invited to attend the first summit on The United State of Women, representing an important moment for women and girls domestically and internationally, as well as for all proponents of gender justice and equality. She currently serves as a member of the Massachusetts Governor's Council on Sexual and Domestic Violence; the Massachusetts Council on Family Serving Agencies; past president of the board of Jane Doe, Inc., the statewide coalition of domestic violence and sexual assault programs. Dubus lives in Exeter, NH with her family.
