In this week's podcast, Jennifer Richmond and Ken Pope speak with Jany Finkielsztein about her immigrant experience and what drove her passion for working in education. Jany's family immigrated from Poland to Colombia during the Holocaust, and one of her grandfather's sayings was, (Outside of packing light and running fast) "nobody can take your education from you." Jany took that to heart and carried her passion for education with her, when safety concerns led her family to immigrate to the United States. As an educator, Jany focused on finding ways to give back to the Hispanic and immigrant communities. However, as the focus of educator professional development began to prioritize activism over learning, she reevaluated her approach. Now working with the CAMERA Education Institute, Jany researches and exposes activists, organizations and curricular materials that present false accounts of Israel and Zionism in K-12 education. In addition, Jany helps to provide educational materials that tackle the anti-Israel bias that has captured much of the American education landscape. No one can take your education away, but we ask Jany: Do we want to preserve the kinds of education that are increasingly contributing to division and polarization among students? Bio: Jany is originally from Bogota, Colombia. She has worked as a middle school teacher, curriculum coordinator and instructional coach across charter, public and independent schools in Massachusetts. She has experience planning and facilitating professional learning opportunities for K-12 teachers. In addition, Jany has been an adjunct faculty teaching pre-service courses for teacher preparation programs at Boston University and Simmons University. Jany is a board member of the Massachusetts Council for the Social Studies (MCSS), and the Jewish Affairs Caucus of the National Educators association (NEA). She is currently a senior education analyst at the CAMERA (Committee for Accuracy for Middle East Reporting and Analysis) Education Institute. What Boston sports team won five national championships in the last six years? Hint: it wasn't the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics or Bruins. The answer: the Boston Renegades, a women's football team. While the local women's teams that have been winning championship after championship, they've received much less fanfare than their male counterparts at Fenway or Gillette Stadium. "Sports aren't inherently male, but in so many spaces we've come to accept them as such," said Rev. Laura Everett, author of the blog, Boston Women's Sports. "We have national and world champions playing locally, but they're not getting the coverage they deserve. Whereas so often women's sports teams are expected to prove that they're worthy, when the men's teams are just presumed that they are." But soccer fans may have reason to rejoice — a bid to bring a new national women's soccer team to Boston could materialize in coming years. Some experts hope it could be the catalyst for local women's teams to finally get the respect and higher profile they have earned. "It's exciting to think that women's pro soccer will be back, hopefully, in Boston and exciting because it's a sport and a league, the NWSL, that's really on the rise. It will be great to have Boston be part of that women's sports conversation nationally." My guest on today's episode is Laurie Israel. Laurie Israel is the author of The Generous Prenup. She is an attorney, consultant, and mediator, concentrating her practice on both prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. Many of my clients have had questions about how to handle finances when remarrying on partnering again after divorce, so I was excited to bring her on the podcast to talk about prenups and how they could be useful. And for those just considering a divorce, she explained how marital mediation or arbitration may be more effective than divorce court. Our conversation revealed that what is commonly assumed about prenups and what is talked about in the media and celebrity divorces isn't the truth at all. Laurie pulled back the curtain on prenups and laws around money, contribution and shared her views about generosity and its role in relationships. Enjoy the episode!“What else is marriage, but being considerate to each other?...that's the key to it, really caring about another person.”“A lot of people are encouraged by the media, and what they're reading to make money more important, and protecting your money more important than your marriage…that's the problem.”“There's a lot of pushback on my views by younger people like millennials, and they say…why shouldn't we have a plan for our marriage? You know, why should we take the risk? But the problem is that these people have not experienced what a long term marriage is. And they also don't understand what the laws about marriage and divorce and estates are.”If you want to start making serious progress in your dating journey TODAY, sign up for a coaching consultation call.Click here to ScheduleGet my FREE PDF Download: 50 Green Flags of a Healthy RelationshipFeatured on the Show: Laurie Israel Laurie Israel is an attorney, consultant, and mediator, concentrating her practice on both prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. What is adult family mediation? Join us on this episode where we welcome guest Halee Burg, an Affiliate Mediator with Elder Decisions®, a division of Agreement Resources, LLC. Sometimes families get stuck. We can't agree and we don't know how to move forward. Adult family or elder mediation is an effective method of making difficult family decisions. Mediators are highly skilled, neutral, conflict resolution experts who do not provide advice or "take sides" but, instead, facilitate purposeful and directed conversations in which family members are encouraged to express their interests and concerns. Three key takeaways from this episode: First, mediation is one of the least adversarial methods to resolve disputes. It is a method of facilitated negotiation. There are other options, including arbitration and litigation, that leave the ultimate decision up to a third party. Second, the process may not be a quick one. It is a future-orientated, problem-solving process. While this method is designed to be short-term, it doesn't necessarily mean a resolution will come quickly. Third, mediation is not the same as therapy, but it can feel therapeutic. The goal of mediation is to come to a resolution with solutions and actionable plans for moving forward but the process itself often feels helpful and productive. Agreement Resources, LLC - Adult Family and Elder Mediation About Halee Burg: A former practicing attorney who now focuses solely on mediation, to give back and help ensure broader access to mediation, Halee participates in community and court mediations through a number of greater Boston community mediation programs. As an active member of the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation, the Academy of Professional Family Mediators, the National Association of Divorce Professionals, and the New England Association for Conflict Resolution, Halee continually expands her knowledge of the field, regularly participates in dialogues with colleagues about best practices and approaches, and develops relationships with professionals in related fields whose expertise helps support clients as they work to make informed decisions. A graduate of the University of Rochester (BA, Psychology, summa cum laude) and the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley (J.D), Halee discovered she also enjoyed being on the other side of instruction, and regularly teaches adult education classes regarding divorce in Massachusetts. When not helping people become unstuck, Halee keeps busy pursuing her other passions – photographing beautiful landscapes, getting lost in a good novel, traveling, cooking, golfing, or spending special time with friends and family. Hello All!The Massachusetts Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children invited us to participate in their 2022 virtual State Conference.  The topic of this year's conference is Intersectionality and it caused us to think (and talk) a lot about how ableism is alive and well in schools and education.  Coined in 1989, the term began in the legal and academic realm but has been adopted by education theorists.  Check out this link for an article on the history of the big ideas inherent in Intersectionality:https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2019/5/20/18542843/intersectionality-conservatism-law-race-gender-discriminationHere's an article from 2020 on the specific and more recent interpretation of intersectionality as it relates to disability:https://disabilityphilanthropy.org/resource/intersections-between-racism-and-ableism/We were thrilled and honored to be part of MCEC's conference and hope that the discussion is thought provoking. Joining a professional organization is something you can do to impact change in our field. It is also part of our ethical responsibilities as members of the profession. A survivor of domestic violence herself, Suzanne understands what an abusive relationship is like and how challenging it can be to leave. She believes that safety should not simply be placed on the survivor's shoulders, but rather the responsibility for establishing a safe community belongs to the community itself as a whole. We'll talk with Suzanne about both the personal and universal effects of violence and how you can help others in a Domestic Violence situation or how you can get help yourself. What you will learn on this episode: Survivor Services that are provided (5:50) Is this a learned behavior?  (10:36)  Forgiveness and healing process (13:01) Why do we stay for so long? (15:08) Why do we give our power away? (51:34) Suzanne joined the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center in 1995 and has served as its chief executive since 1997.  She is credited with developing and administering domestic violence programs that are informed by the needs of survivors and are comprehensive and effective. In a White House ceremony in October 2010, Vice President Joseph Biden recognized the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center's Domestic Violence High-Risk Team Model, when he said, “We need to replace what we have been doing and replicate this kind of success.” Recognized as an expert in the field, Dubus was named a Champion of Change by the White House in October 2011; and most recently, the 2016 Woman of the Year by Delamano, Inc.  She was invited to attend the first summit on The United State of Women, representing an important moment for women and girls domestically and internationally, as well as for all proponents of gender justice and equality. We love to gamble. It’s estimated that more than 80 percent of American adults gamble each year, that may include everything from playing a slot machine at a casino or buying a lottery ticket at a local 7-11. Some find it easy to walk away from the table. But for others, those games of chance may turn into an addiction. Recent research has found that between 2.5 and 3 million adults in America suffer from compulsive gambling, an unstoppable need to gamble regardless of the personal and financial toll. A recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court which has opened the way for sports betting in most states has many experts concerned that we may see even more people develop gambling problems. Marlene Warner is Board President for the National Council on Problem Gambling and the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling. You will want to hear what she has to say in her interview with Woman Around Town’s Editor Charlene Giannetti.

Mediation is a good way of resolving family and relationship conflicts because it is flexible, efficient, compassionate, and private. It allows parties in conflict to be in control of their own process and outcome, while giving them the support and information necessary to reach fair and acceptable agreements. A good mediator helps clients solve problems respectfully and effectively in a way that improves your life today, tomorrow and into the future by increasing understanding of each other’s point of view and building a new foundation for satisfying and successful communication. Join me and my guest, Kate Fanger, as we discuss this important topic for those experiencing conflict in relationships and within families.Kate Fanger is the sole proprietor of Kate Fanger Mediation, in Somerville, MA, where she provides family mediation services including divorce mediation, marriage mediation, elder mediation and communication coaching for parents and teens. Kate is a mediator at heart. Her training includes law school, professional mediation trainings, step-motherhood (currently with two teenagers), motherhood, and life in general.
