“Creating the escape room becomes the escape room.” New York City is REPOD co-host David Spira's home market. Whenever he's recommending escape rooms to guests and visitors, his favorite go-to is MyssTic Escape Rooms in Brooklyn, NY. Two of their escape rooms have won Golden Lock awards: Ghost Light, and their newest game, The Bird. Gara Roda and Moritz Marti, the co-founders of MyssTic Rooms, join us today on REPOD to talk about the challenges of building a world class escape room in bustling New York City, especially when they are far from their home countries. There are many reasons it's challenging to build escape rooms in NYC. Real estate is expensive, the hurdles of navigating the city's fire codes are many, and square footage is at a premium. An affordable place for their business meant a basement location which came with its own set of complications. A near catastrophic flood in the early days led to some pretty impressive flood mitigation. Shortly after they first opened, a tragic fire occurred in an escape room in Poland, which led to a crackdown by fire inspectors all over the world, but with especially tight restrictions in New York. Gara and Moritz persevered, despite all the setbacks, and it was inspiring to hear them talk about how all the different constraints led to more creativity. As David points out, even though their games are small in comparison to other escape rooms, "every single nook and cranny had an abundance of detail." These two escape room creators have endured seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and yet have recently just been honored with another Golden Lock award for their newest game, The Bird. They mention at the end of the episode that eventually they are looking to move back to Europe and are open to finding a partner or even possibly a buyer. So hit 'em up if this sounds interesting to you. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 115 "State College Sasquatch" This week we look at a recent report of a bigfoot in an unlikely, and familiar location. The area along Spring Creek between State College and Bellefonte is a place we have fished many times over the years. It holds a special place in our hearts. So when we heard someone had recently reported a class A encounter, we were eager to look into the story. In many ways this is a textbook sighting, how that affects your opinion of the veracity of the story is up to interpretation. Here is a link to the BFRO report we reference in the episode: www.bfro.net/GDB/show_report.asp?id=78276 If you have a story you'd like to share or a topic you'd like us to research, you can find us on Instagram, Youtube and TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com

Here we are, aboard the Good Ship Ghost Light, lost at sea, our mind tossing like the ocean, setting sail for someplace a little less storm-toss'd. Even though it's Saturday, I'm makin' tonight Sunday, searchin' for a relax, pullin' from the jazz stacks...
A few months ago, Lisa and David played Ghost Light at Myss Tic in Brooklyn, NY, with Eric Molinsky, host of the podast Imaginary Worlds. Eric has been a long time immersive theater and larp fan, but he had yet to be sold on escape rooms. They were convinced that he (like so many others!) just hadn't had the opportunity to experience what great escape rooms have to offer - so they pitched him on doing an escape room episode. What he made was a beautiful exploration of the escape room world. We absolutely love the episode that he produced and want to make sure that our community is aware of it. REPOD Season 9 is currently in the works... we have some amazing episodes already lined up for you. More soon.

In this episode, Jonathan and Devon chat with six-time TONY Award Nominee Chad Beguelin about his new novel "SHOWMANCE" and his life as a Broadway writer. About SHOWMANCE: Noah Adams's career as a playwright is circling the drain, thanks to a scorching review of his first Broadway musical. So when a family emergency sends him back to his Podunk hometown of Plainview, Illinois, he figures he'll hide out for a bit. But to Noah's horror, his agent has secretly arranged for him to stage an amateur version of the career-ruining musical at the local community theater. As if trying to work with a bunch of artless amateurs wasn't enough, Noah runs into Luke, the jerk from his high school years, everywhere he goes. Luke somehow grew up to be beloved by everyone in town…and undeniably gorgeous. As rehearsals begin, Noah is surprised by his cast's insights, the warmth of the town he'd dismissed, and the reality of what happened with Luke all those years ago. Just how much has Noah misjudged? Available at Penguin Books Guest - Chad Beguelin Chad Beguelin is a six-time Tony® nominee. His works include Disney's Aladdin (Tony Award nomination for Best Book and Best Original Score, Drama Desk Award Nomination for Best Book and Outstanding Lyrics), The Prom (Tony Award nomination for Best Book and Best Original Score, Drama Desk Award Nomination for Best Book and Outstanding Lyrics) and The Wedding Singer (Tony Award nomination for Best Book and Best Original Score, Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Lyrics). He is the recipient of the Edward Kleban Award for Outstanding Lyric Writing, the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Awards, the Gilman & Gonzalez-Falla Musical Theater Award and the ASCAP Foundation Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award. In this episode, Jonathan and Devon chat with composer Robin Hiley & writer Becky Hope-Palmer about their musical "LIFELINE" currently running off-Broadway. LIFELINE tells the story of Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming's world-changing discovery of penicillin in 1928, charting the rise and fall of antibiotics. Fleming's historic story is interwoven with Jess', a present day doctor whose childhood sweetheart, Aaron, is recovering from cancer treatment, almost 100 years after antibiotics were discovered. But just as Aaron is desperate to resume normality and rekindle the romance, his life hangs in the balance, as he waits to see if Fleming's miracle cure will still work well enough to save him. The musical is a two-time Edinburgh Festival Fringe sell-out (2018 and 2022). It has toured to London, Glasgow and the east coast of the USA (2022). It has also been showcased at the UK Houses of Parliament and in Barbados for Prime Minister Mia Mottley. Previously entitled The Mould that Changed the World, the show underwent significant re-development in 2023 to incorporate numerous modern day patient stories that the producers had collected from around the world. I used to think escape rooms were gimmicky activities where everyone scrambled to solve puzzles while I stood around feeling useless. On the other hand, I love immersive theater, where an interactive play unfolds as you walk through a space. I thought they were very different types of live entertainment. Not anymore. I talk with David and Lisa Spira from the site Escape Room Artist and podcast Reality Escape Pod about how escape rooms are becoming emotionally resonant, sophisticated theatrical works. We go through the haunted escape room Ghost Light at MyssTic Rooms, and I talk with their co-founder and artistic director Gara Roda. Haley E.R. and J. Cameron Cooper of Strange Bird Immersive discuss the innovative ways they designed The Man From Beyond, their Houdini-themed séance escape room. Plus, Victor van Doorn and Francine Boon of the company Sherlocked explore how far they can go in creating a sense of authenticity from the feel of the props to the actors who won't admit you're entering an escape room. Hi, we hope you're having a wonderful summer and really enjoying all the creativity that's out there. Looking forward to the festival season that's now underway. Camden is going great with new work from Michael Traufer, a brand new musical called The Pink List at the King's Head. Catch that in August. If you're heading up to Edinburgh, then here are some of our tips. First, drink plenty of water because this summer looks like it's going to be a scorcher. And also, take time to enjoy some of the traditional venues. Paradise, The Vaults and St. Augustine, like the name almost suggests, is one of the original venues. And it's always worth picking something there because it keeps you in touch with what actors can do in atmospheric but quite stripped-back venues. The storytelling is often to the front in that. Some of the shows gracing Paradise include a solo show inspired by the life of the performer Jerry Carroll. If you enjoyed Jerry at Zoo Venues last year, this would be a great time to follow up on his work. It's already had a great run at Brighton. "Light" shows just how you can bring a personal story and humor to a solo work. Equally, if you're checking out Paradise venues, it's a good idea to pick one venue and see three or four shows there to save on time. One good show to check out is Chopped Liver and Unions from the States, presented by Blue Fire Theatre Company. This piece, inspired by the character Cyril Wesker, had a great run in Brighton too, so it's a good chance to see a work that's becoming more developed and gaining its ground. At The Space, one of the largest and always growing venues in Edinburgh, you can find new work premiering. Edinburgh is a great place to search for brand new premieres. One notable mention is Edward's Talk, a devised drama part of the creative work of Soundcape Productions. It's 50 minutes in length and based primarily around a talk about speed awareness. Such a unique premise makes it worth checking out. If you're exploring The Space, another show to consider is Ghost Light, a thriller set in 1865 that starts with the premise of experiencing ghosts firsthand. It takes place on Nidry Street. On the Royal Mile, the heart of the entire Edinburgh Fringe, another Space venue to check out is Space on the Mile in Space 2. There, you can find Addict, a show that explores the impact of social media addiction. This is particularly interesting in today's modern society where social media plays a significant role in our lives. Tech and forward-thinking shows are strongly represented this year. Apple of My Eye, an award-winning solo musical based on the life of Steve Jobs, is coming back. Especially now, with Apple having released their VR headset, it might be a fun time to revisit this musical. Whether you're meticulously planning every minute of your Edinburgh Fringe experience or taking a lucky dip, we hope some of our choices inspire you. Share your creative works with us on Twitter or X using the hashtag #SundayFriend. Here's to a summer full of inspiration and satisfaction in your work!
